Meyer The Franciscan who wrote this book now serves as the president of the Washington Theological Union, a Catholic school of theology in Washington, D.C. As a disclaimer, let me note that Fr. Burkhard taught me Christology. Because I had taken a class from him, though it was on a different topic, I decided to read this book. I found APOSTOLICITY THEN AND NOW to be the most concise and persuasive narrative I have read about the three worldviews that Christianity has confronted in its two millennia of existence: the premodern with its emphases upon hierarchy and authority, the modern with its focus on certain knowledge and the turn to the subject, and the postmodern with its preoccupation with multiplicity and the other. Fr. Burkhard eloquently explains the meaning of apostolicity in light of each of these three worldviews and makes a strong argument for the Church to engage postmodernism. Though I have felt a certain degree of skepticism and even animosity toward postmodernism, Fr. Burkhard's presentation left me convinced that the Gospel must engage this understanding of the world in a far more open, accepting, and involved manner than it addressed modernity. Anyone who cares about the world of ideas, loves the Church, and desires to offer the Gospel to the present age does well to read this thin but thoughtful work. Fr. Burkhard has given a great service to the Church in writing his book. It deserves wide attention.

Good Refresher By C Pierce I have a bias against charts like these, but the "Charts on Open Theism and Ortho" is, notwithstanding how low brow, enriching. The Patriotic quotes are illuminating; not a bad refresher. Also, the quotes from Whiteheads are especially helpful.

Disclosure: I did receive this product at a deep discount or free in exchange for my fair and honest review. However this does not mean a positive or 5 star rating. I have used and reviewed this product without bias, and based solely on my experience with it, I highly recommend!!I hope you found this review helpful. If you did, please mark as so. I know myself, along with many others, depend a lot on reviews when making purchases.

Alpha and Beta By Dina Lang I'm quite surprise upon reading this book that what I have been doing all along are something that the Alpha male would do. I like this book on how descriptive it is, and yeah, it is all about on how to be the "big dog". It also gave examples on how not to be an Alpha, as good examples will inspire us, we can actually learn quicker from the mistakes, so kudos to the author for giving the 'cons'.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Real complete By Vicky Really good and complete book. Worth every page. I like the communication chapter. And I think the mirror test is really revealing. It is not only about the alpha male, but also about being a leader and being a good person for others. This book gives you all the traits to be a real alpha but also teaches you that being an alpha male does not mean one has to smash any concurrence around.

By Luis Souza Music is exciting in itself and it can literally change lives, as Vincent shows with all the stories that he shares here. I love that fact that now when I listen to some songs I also remember those stories. In a certain way, this book changed the way I see, hear and feel music!!! Loved it!!!

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. An inspiring little gem! By Andre Maranhao This book is an inspiring little gem! Of course everyone knows how important music is, but when I flipped through and started reading a few of these stories, some of them really blew my socks off, like the story about the overweight high school girl who was encouraged to sing in a school performance and astonished her classmates, then went on to become a Grammy-winning artist. The great thing about this book for ADD types like me is how short each story is. I can open up the book to any page and gobble up a few great stories, and at the same time become acquainted with a great many artists, some famous, some not. All of them offer their own unique approach to the simple question "What makes music important to you"...probably as unique as their music. And their stories are touching and personal.I heartily recommend this book for anyone - be they musician or listener. Just buy it:)

From the best-selling author of Letting in Light, a deliciously romantic Christmas novella... Sherbourne Mistletoe has been prized and sold at the annual Mistletoe Fair for over a hundred years; but could this year possibly be the last? With her father’s sudden death and debts mounting up it looks as though Freya’s only hope for the future is to sell her beloved family home. And to make matters worse, the only contenders to buy Appleyard Farm, are the people she’d least like to sell it to – her rival growers, the Henderson brothers, who seem always to make life so difficult for her. It’s magical stuff though, mistletoe, and the arrival of the mysterious Amos Fry, brings a glimmer of hope that might just mean Freya can fall in love with Christmas all over again. As the snow begins to fall, cosy up and find your sparkle this Christmas with another big-hearted, and wonderfully warm read from the author of Letting in Light.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Much more than just a delicious love story By Welsh Annie I so enjoyed Letting In Light, Emma Davies' first (and best selling) novel, when I read it earlier this year that I was really looking forward to reading her new novella Merry Mistletoe. I like novellas at Christmas, I'm a bit of a fan of Emma's writing after that first encounter - and this really was a thoroughly lovely read. It's always interesting to see how an author's skills translate to a short story or novella: this one's just 92 pages long, and I have to say that this author's skills translate absolutely perfectly. It's a great story - Freya struggling with grief at the recent loss of her father and desperately trying (and failing) to keep Appleyard Farm going as Christmas approaches. Her boyfriend Gareth has moved in but offers her no help of any kind, and her only option seems to be to sell the farm. She clearly has some history with the Henderson brothers who want to buy, but she really has no options left. She's an excellent character, who you warm to immediately - she can be obstinate and difficult, but I really found myself entirely in her corner, just hoping everything worked out for her.Emma creates wonderful characters. We never get a really clear physical description of drifter Amos beyond his bright red Doc Martins, but we certainly feel the depth of how he cares for Freya, helping her out, giving her sound advice, comforting her when she's hurting. I'd really rather like an Amos of my own. The Henderson brothers are so well drawn too - the "pig-headed arrogant sod" Stephen and his brother Sam with the more genuine smile. I also loved her friend Merry - there are some lovely exchanges including one particular phone call I thought was quite brilliantly done. And as for detestable Gareth...One of the strengths of Letting In Light was the wonderful descriptions, and there are some lovely ones here too that draw you right in. I really enjoyed the descriptions of the mistletoe sales, the orchards Freya loves with the dew shining on the cobwebs - and I've rarely before come across such wonderful descriptions of bacon and egg sandwiches that made me want to get the frying pan out. There were some lovely little details too - the white feathers really touched my heart. The structure is excellent - I liked the 29 day countdown, and the feeling that it was more than just Christmas that was relentlessly approaching. The secrets at the story's heart were a real surprise, and so well handled. And as well as a beautiful human interest and love story, the author has successfully made this a real page-turner - I really wanted to know what happened, and whether Freya would find the happiness she deserved. Can you believe that all this fits into 92 pages? Neither could I. And yet there's nothing rushed about the writing - it's smooth and flowing, and quite lovely to read. When I visited Rowan Hill in Letting In Light, I said I felt I'd been part of the community - and I equally loved my time at Appleyard Farm. I really, really enjoyed it. And those final lines - well, they're absolutely perfect, and I sighed and smiled too...

When I spotted this adorable novella on NetGalley By The Nest of Books Review When I spotted this adorable novella on NetGalley, my fingers moved very quickly to request it. I've another book stored on my Kindle by this author, and I can not wait to sample it. Merry Mistletoes is Emma's first Christmas novella, and I am very excited to dive into it to and see where it takes me.Sherbourne Mistletoe has been prized and sold at the annual Mistletoe Fair for over hundred years. Mistletoe is also supposed to be magical, well Freya Sherbourne hopes so too because it looks like she will be out of business very soon. After her father's sudden death, Freya is left with a mountain of debt and her only hope for a future is to sell her beloved family home, the Appleyard Farm. And to the make matters worse the only contenders to buy it are the people she'd least like to sell to - the dreaded Henderson brothers. They seem to make Freya life always difficult. But Freya just might get her wish with the arrival of the mysterious Amos Fry.Freya Sherbourne is a strong and determined heroine with a very creative flair. Freya's life hasn't always been easy, but she had her wonderful father to rely on when things got tough. When he is not longer there, Freya has a hard time to manage Appleyard Farm as well as her personal life. Thankfully she has the enigmatic Amos to fill the gap with a well-meant advice, support and shoulder to cry on. At first I was suspicious of Amos but after reading a few chapters I was mesmerised by this character and intrigued about his intentions.Other two characters were playing an important part, Stephen and Sam Henderson, the brothers who owned the farm next to Freya's. Stephen was cocky and smug older brother who wanted everything that his more hardworking and smarter brotherSam had. There was a lot of tension between the brothers and Freya, and as the novella progressed, I learned why they did not seem to get on. There were few of misunderstandings to solve and things to put right as they should have been a long time ago.Emma Davies created a warm, magical and fasted paced novella with very likable characters, beautifully described Christmas scenery and one or two surprises up its woolly sleeves. So cosy up with a large cup of hot chocolate and dive into Merry Mistletoe.

Robinson 4 - ”Magical stuff, mistletoe.” Stars!Merry Mistletoe is the first work of Emma Davies that I have read, and in respect of the story-line and its Christmassy-ness it ticked all of my required boxes, and in great style.I think there is always something charming about taking a simple storyline, and giving a little Christmas magic. If the writing is up to snuff, it then morphs from simple into something very special. Freya and Sam have known each other since childhood, and as the book progresses, due to the more contact and time they spend with each other you come to learn that although living on neighbouring farms, their friendship was broken, and the reasons why.Despite the torrents of life, things always endured.Having suddenly lost her beloved father, Freya is tasked with getting in the seasons Holly and Mistletoe harvest with the help of drifter Amos, and hardly any help from her toad of a boyfriend. Things do not go quite according to plan and Freya ends up without said boyfriend, a broken arm, and due to lack of money is forced into looking to sell the farm. This was a quick, entertaining and heart-warming read. It bought a tear to my eye when reading of Freya’s yearly visit to the Christmas Decoration display to choose a new ornament in memory of her father, as this is something I do every year with my mother although I am lucky in that she is still with me to make the selection. If you are looking for a little Christmas sparkle and a well written ’Happily Ever After’ I urge you to give this little novella a go.ARC generously provided via Netgalley, and it was my pleasure to provide the above honest review.

A limited edition hardcover book exploring Churchill's relationships with his generals This is the incredible story of the darkest days of World War II when Winston Churchill and his generals—Montgomery, Alexander, Wavell, and Brooke—were facing catastrophe on every front. They suffered defeat at Dunkirk and survived the Battle of Britain. With enormous amounts of courage and skill they fought off the Luftwaffe and managed to hold on until the Allied invasion of Europe. On May 10th, 1940 Churchill became Prime Minister and took control of Britain’s War Effort. He appointed key men to command the forces upon which the free world’s survival depended. Men like Montgomery, Slim, Auchinleck, Alanbrooke, and Alexander were given the highest command to wage war “against a monstrous tyranny never surpassed in the dark lamentable catalogue of human crime.” This is the story of his relationships with these remarkable men and the American generals who followed them including Dwight Eisenhower and George Marshall.

"Step back Camus, your anti-hero has been fragmented and dispersed via the free-fall of social media. Michael J. Seidlinger's re-visioning enters the anthropocene without apology or oxygen masks, and asks us to take the trip toward self discovery as if the self was moving particles. A kick-ass ride. A beautiful dismemberment." —Lidia Yuknavitch, author of The Small Backs of Children "If anyone at any time is in search of a novel that renders the dysphoria and fragmentation experienced by the first generation to live through social media, then he or she should begin with The Strangest. Like Camus, Seidlinger does not so much describe anomie as write from it; the result is a strangely resonant book that feels, above all else, honest." —Will Chancellor, author of A Brave Man Seven Storeys Tall Michael Seidlinger has dared tackle one of the literary classics of the 20th century literature and reimagined it for the 21st: and in Albert Camus’ anti-hero Meursault, at once apathetic and violent, unable to connect with his fellow humans, Seidlinger exhumes a perfect metaphor for the Internet Generation. Zachary Weinham, anchorless in terms of morals and committed to nothing except commenting on comments and their comments etc., finds himself involved in the sinister machinations of Rios, someone he meets in a bar, and allows himself to be set up—whether out of apathy or a desire for self-destruction it’s hard to tell. A murder ensues. Shunned by his friends and associates, not sure of what he has gotten into, Zachary heads for confrontation with society—and his own moral values. “For a line to exist, it would first have to be crossed.”

It's been decades, actually, since I read Camus' The Stranger, so I'll need to revisit it before I try to speak to how successful an homage Michael's novel is. But for now, I can say this is easily one of the best novels I've read this year. An entertaining, fast-moving, often hilarious, absurdist tale.. A fascinating portrait of a supremely alienated man--the strangest guy you're likely to see for a while, caught up in some pretty crazy sh*t.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Pokes fun, then leaves the stinger under the skin. By John Domini The reference in the title, like the ghost inhabiting the plot, is of course Camus’ The Stranger — and it takes a fearless, freethinking author to work up his own take on an existential classic. Seidlinger however risks still more, by taking Camus’ Meursault down a peg, reducing him to one of those figures that haunt Twitter and Facebook and Instagram. This novel’s Meurks proves murky indeed, well more detached than the 1946 original. When out for a rare encounter with the palpable world, Meurks comes across like an Asperger’s case, keeping count of folks on the street. But then, that’s what he does in his preferred reality, in front of his screens. There too, he keeps count: how many followers, Likes, reposts? If this sounds comic, it should. Seidlinger keeps up a poker-faced social critique through the novel’s first half, since after all, the surrogate life online exerts a powerful gravitational pull on us all. About halfway through the book, however, Seidlinger sets the same steep challenge as Camus, forcing his man to confront our flesh-and-blood limits. Under circumstances themselves murky, in scary company, Meurks finds himself goaded to murder. Through these passages the novel suffers a bit from its deliberate lack of ordinary psychology or sensual data; the threat to Meurks remains sketchy, as does the look of the corpse. After that, however, the former social-media addict winds up in world as denatured as the one he used to find only on the internet, namely, Death Row. He lives the nightmare of “the genuine... as a generated brand.” At times, reading The Strangest, I felt it was heir to the early novels of Rudolph Wurlitzer, skeletal yet lingering.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. What an Incredible Book! By Drassie This is a very thought-provoking book. Seidlinger's book is excellent. Unfortunately, I haven't yet read the book on which it was based, but I certainly will. This is, by far, the best novel I have read in a long time. The author is a very wonderful writer and his book is about crossing the slippery slope of the way little things, seemingly innocent, escalate into something out of control. How does one know the fine line between right and wrong without crossing it first? As the author says in his book, being aware that such a line exists would require a person to actually cross it. He does a fantastic job in presenting this conundrum and he has a very good sense of humour. This book is relatable especially in terms of the addiction to social media and the quest to fit in. I can certainly relate to these themes. I love it. This is definitely a book to be read repeatedly 'cause it's very relevant to our lives and times. I highly recommend it to all. I look forward to reading his next book!

The Mysterious Stranger, by Mark Twain

About the Author Mark Twain was the pen name of Samuel solipsism Langhorne Clemens (November 30, 1835 – April 21, 1910). Mark Twain was an American author and humorist. However, beyond that, he was fascinated with science, scientific inquiry, and an early adopter of science fiction. His book A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court features a time traveler from contemporary America, using his knowledge of science to introduce modern technology to Arthurian England. This type of storyline would later become a common feature of the science fiction. The Mysterious Stranger is a brilliant work going beyond science fiction into the religious unknown.

17 of 17 people found the following review helpful. A different face for Twain By Luxx Mishley In 1590 three Austrian boys - Nikolaus, Seppi, and Theodor (the narrator) - meet a mysterious stranger in the countryside near their small village. This stranger possesses strange powers, and delights the boys not only with his magic tricks (such as lighting their pipe with a breath or creating a miniature civilization from dust), but with his stories and observations regarding the human race. Though he identifies himself as an angel by the name of Satan he assures the boy that he is merely the nephew of the more famous figure, and gains their trust and their friendship. The boys continue a strange and often taxing relationship with the supernatural individual, and though they are unnaturally sedated by his physical presence his influence on their thoughts and morality creates a kind of lasting damage to their individual psyches.Mark Twain's narrative views on religion, faith, and humanity can be found in any number of his works, though I myself am only familiar with those presented in The Diaries of Adam and Eve, Helpful Hints for Good Living, and Letters from Earth. However, his critical presentation in The Mysterious Stranger is much darker than any I have read by him before. Although the story is told by Theodor, the narrative itself revolves around Satan and Satan's view of humanity. Much of the narrative itself is occupied with the sermons he delivers to the boys, which are aggressive and critical towards humanity, and often towards the morality the boys themselves are taught to respect. The kinds of ideas presented can leave readers wondering whether the character of Satan is really the nephew or the dominant figure, and allows them to question the motives of the foremost character in the novel. Is he truly a benevolent spiritual figure? Is he an evil entity set on wreaking havoc in the small community? And why, in light of their own doubts and misgivings about him, do the boys continue to associate with - indeed, seek out if possible - Satan? The Mysterious Stranger is not the Mark Twain of Huck Finn, or even the Mark Twain of Helpful Hints; here is a much darker Twain intent not on amusing his audiences, but on expressing feelings of aggression and anger towards a mass that so often seems to perpetuate its own misery. While I found Satan's frequent aggrandizing sermons to be incredibly tedious I appreciated the glimpse of Twain that I had not seen before.

26 of 28 people found the following review helpful. subversive & thrilling By xtina Provocative and subversive, if you've ever had issues with Christian theology, you will certainly be drawn to this novella. At the end of the story, the character Satan manages to sum up, in one paragraph, with biting eloquence, some of the most serious theological problems with Christianity. It is the sort of passage that you read and then immediately bang your head against the wall because it's exactly what you always wanted to say and you wish YOU had been the one to write it down:"Strange, indeed, that you should not have suspected that your universe and its contents were only dreams, visions, fiction! Strange, because they are so frankly and hysterically insane -- like all dreams: a God who could make good children as easily as bad, yet preferred to make bad ones; who could have made every one of them happy, yet never made a single happy one; who made them prize their bitter life, yet stingily cut it short; who gave his angels eternal happiness unearned, yet required his other children to earn it; who gave his angels painless lives, yet cursed his other children with biting miseries and maladies of mind and body; who mouths justice and invented hell -- mouths mercy and invented hell -- mouths Golden Rules, and forgiveness multiplied by seventy times seven, and invented hell; who mouths morals to other people and has none himself; who frowns upon crimes, yet commits them all; who created man without invitation, then tries to shuffle the responsibility for man's acts upon man, instead of honorably placing it where it belongs, upon himself; and finally, with altogether divine obtuseness, invites this poor, abused slave to worship him!..."

27 of 31 people found the following review helpful. Three supreme masterpieces, one ornery let-down. By darragh o'donoghue this volume spans the length of Mark Twain's career, and contains some of his most famous shorter works, which all centre on the subject of Money. 'The Celebrated jumping frog of Calaveras County' is the most perfect tall tale in the English language, three flawless pages about Jim Smiley and the bizarre sidelines he would investigate to win a bet, any bet, written in a miraculous mid-19th century California vernacular. If that isn't enough, Twain tops it with the best closing paragraph of any work I have ever read ever.'The $1,000,000 Bank note' is almost surreal, or Marxist, the story of a derelict made an unwitting guinea pig by two elderly millionaires, curious to see what would happen to an honest but poor man in the possession of such an impractible note. The frightening fetishistic power of currency structures a somewhat creepily benevolent narrative, and the opening paragraphs audaciously cram a novel's worth of misfortune.'The Man who corrupted Hadleyburg' is the masterpiece here, at once an unforgiving morality tale about the temptation of money on an incorruptible town, and a satire on the crippling effect of bogus social respectability. Twain's irony is at its most relentless here, mixing anger at elite hypocrisy with distaste for the savage mob mentality. The scenes of public justice are hilarious but terrifying; the unnamed man taking monstrous revenge on a whole town for a personal slight, exposing its shams by an experiment, could well be Twain himself. The same could be said of the hero of his novella 'The Mysterious Stranger', Twain's last, posthumously published work. In this, an angel, Satan, nephew of his infernal namesake, comes to a late 16th century Austrian mountain village and systematically exposes the murderous herd instincts, moral deceptions and shabby pretensions of the human condition. Everything - war, religion, society, justice, family, human aspiration, childhood innocence - is ground down with misanthropic, sub-Swiftian satire.'Stranger' is not an easy book to like. As an historical novel, it is an utter failure, with no attempt to understand the mindset, never mind the language, idiom or customs of an alien culture. As an allegory for the contemporary America in which Twain was writing, the book is indispensible, insightful, brave, bracing, honest, incredibly prescient, but monotonous, flatly written and exhausting. As a supernatural fable, the book has little sense of wonder or of the unknown, but in its story of a devil wreaking subversive havoc on a socially repressive culture by playing on their hypocritical terms, 'Stranger' does look forward to Bulgakov's more successful 'The Master and Margarita'.

By Carol Rocky Mountain Hero is book three in the To Love Again series by Kate Fargo.Isabel and Tray’s entire lives changed during those couple of days up on that mountain. They found something they were both missing in the connection between them only to almost loose it when their lives were threatened in that freak mountain blizzard. Now, back at the safety of home, Isabel refuses to consider that the weekend was anything else but what it was intended, a teaching experience from which they both gained something.“She hadn’t felt this alive in years. Her day to day life of going to work, making dinner, doing laundry and then doing it all over again the next day didn’t include being stuck on mountainsides with handsome men in howling snowstorms.”“I’ve spent the last few years constructing my life so everything is safe. Safe and boring.”Tray is desperate to get Isabel to listen to him. He’s not ready to let her go. There is something there worth exploring, he can feel it. But first, he must convince her that he is not the young college student she thinks him to be but a man, not that much younger than she is, that can be something important to her.“Risk nothing, gain nothing.”Tray confronts her but makes the mistake of putting it all out there which scares Isabel off even more. She has made her life orderly, in order to protect herself from hurt. She is convinced that there is no room in her life for anything else but her career.Isabel’s practice has benefited from her experiences with Tray. It’s like a veil has been lifted. But is this enough? Doesn’t she deserve more?“Give Tray a chance.” Jenny stepped back and held Isabel’s gaze. “Give yourself a chance, Issy. You deserve to be happy.”I can’t wait to read the next one, book four, Rocky Mountain Holiday, when we jump to Christmas and Isabel and Tray try to make things work. This could be the best Christmas ever…or not.

This story picks up from book 2 where Tray and Isabel are caught in the white-out storm while up on the mountain. One is experienced in outdoors and one is not, so much can happen and go wrong. Emotions are high and feelings become confusing. Isabel is so uncertain and fears taking a risk, but staying safe has left her empty. Tray hasn't felt so alive or confident with a woman until Isabel. Can these two take the risk on each other or continue to play it safe? When secrets are revealed, will it draw them closer or split them apart? Disclosure: I received an e-copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts, opinions, and ratings are my own.

Brooklyn-based painter Kehinde Wiley's acclaimed World Stage series inserts into the language of old master portraiture the very ethnicities and ethnic iconography that Western art has most excluded from it, or that Western art has portrayed solely in colonial terms. Among the countries and continents the American artist--currently the subject of a major exhibition traveling to Brooklyn, Fort Worth, Toledo, Seattle and Richmond--has previously depicted in this ambitious epic are Brazil, Jamaica, Haiti, Africa, China, India and Sri Lanka. As technically impressive as they are conceptually complex, Wiley's portraits feature young black men in classic heroic poses, destabilizing canonical ideas of white masculinity and power. For his first exhibition in Europe, Wiley focused on France's history of colonialism, scouring the streets of Morocco, Tunisia, Gabon, the Republic of Congo and Cameroon for men to paint with classic Napoleonic flair. This hardcover volume includes an interview with world-renowned curator Jérôme Sans and 33 lushly colored paintings from Wiley's series, the rococo backgrounds mixed with African street patterns making visible two aspects of France's cultural heritage seldom viewed in tandem.

If it's possible for a book to even exceed one's expectations, this book has done that; it's *gorgeous*! I (pre)-ordered the book 3 1/2 months ago and later saw the exhibition at the Jewish Museum (if you live in NYC or if you'll be in town before July 29, I highly recommend the exhibit. Only then can you fully appreciate the size and brilliant colors of Mr. Wiley's paintings).

The "Almost Complete' Monograph on Kehinde Wiley By Grady Harp Rizzoli has published what tat the time the book went to press `the only comprehensive monograph on Kehinde Wiley. But as with all exceptional artists, subject mater can change and since this book went to press Wiley has presented (this month) a collection titled `An Economy of Grace' in which he steps away form his usual concentration on the black male and instead painted the black female. Wiley teamed up with Givenchy designer Riccardo Tisci to design costumes for the subjects, studying the history of female portraiture at the Louvre to find inspiration for the historical guidelines for femininity and beauty. Aside from stunning couture, the decision to commission costumes for the portraits hints at the consumption of supposedly inherent traits such as grace. showing how grace, like power or nobility, can be manufactured, bought or painted. The models, who Wiley cast from the streets of New York, are retroactively inserted into the art historical cannon, filling the longstanding gap of black women in the history of art. Just as Wiley showed the ability of a portrait to empower his male subjects, he shows the ramifications of the representation of women in art history. He inserts his portraits into the Western cannon, like a technicolor Thomas Gainsborough. Comparing the male portraits to the female, you can see the ways presence and pride manifest themselves in gendered ways. The female image of power exudes poise and coyness over the traditional Wiley male bravado. But that will doubtless appear in another book. Meanwhile this luxurious volume addresses both the earliest paintings and photographs and his recent forays into sculpture--bust portraits in bronze in the manner of Renaissance artists. The publication includes a forward illuminating the major themes of Wiley's work from Thelma Golden, the chief curator and director of the Studio Museum in Harlem, New York. Art historian Robert Hobbs deconstructs Wiley's conceptual realism and process of portraiture in an essay. Sarah E. Lewis, curator and historian, analyzes the critical reception of Wiley's work, with a particular emphasis on his historical portraits (2005 - 2008), which reinterpret Western Europe's traditional portraiture commissions: royalty, the church, and the military. Author Brian Keith Jackson analyzes Wiley's depictions of the body and the impact of the male gaze in these works while Index magazine's founder Peter Halley leads a thoughtful interview with Wiley that traces the themes of contradiction and consumption in his practice. So here are the various effusive photorealistic portraits from this Los Angeles native and New York-based visual artist who has firmly situated himself within art history's portrait painting tradition. As a contemporary descendent of a long line of portraitists--including Reynolds, Gainsborough, Titian, Ingres, and others--Wiley engages the signs and visual rhetoric of the heroic, powerful, majestic, and sublime in his representation of urban black and brown men found throughout the world.''By applying the visual vocabulary and conventions of glorification, wealth, prestige, and history to subject matter drawn from the urban fabric, Wiley makes his subjects and their stylistic references juxtaposed inversions of each other, forcing ambiguity and provocative perplexity to pervade his imagery.'Wiley's larger than life figures disturb and interrupt tropes of portrait painting, often blurring the boundaries between traditional and contemporary modes of representation and the critical portrayal of masculinity and physicality as it pertains to the view of black and brown young men. Initially, Wiley's portraits were based on photographs taken of young men found on the streets of Harlem. As his practice grew, his eye led him toward an international view, including models found in urban landscapes throughout the world--such as Senegal, Dakar and Rio de Janeiro, among others--accumulating to a vast body of work called, "The World Stage."This is a big, impressive monograph and while it may not include the newest works, it most assuredly is a learned and sumptuous monograph. Kehinde Wiley continues his exploration of the similarites and disparites of man By Grady Harp In this beautifully designed and printed book KEHINDE WILEY: THE WORLD STAGE: ISRAEL this gifted American artist continues his goal of capturing the essence of black masculinity, poise, and style in this, his most recent "World Stage" series, Israel. Wiley has painted subject for his magnum opus in China, Lagos and Dakar, Brazil, and India and Sri Lanka. For the Israel leg, he has chosen to focus on the fusion of modern culture with the traditions of Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East within the Israeli melting pot. The project, paintings of Israeli men amidst Jewish-themed textile patterns, itself sprang from the artist's interests in globalization, diasporas, hybrid cultures, and power - what better place to explore these subjects than Israel.According to an accompanying essay, `Intertwined with the paintings of heroic men in richly colorful settings and garb are 11 pieces of Judaica from the Jewish Museum's collection, creating a context for the colorful motifs that frame the men in the paintings, like an Italian Torah ark curtain from Venice made of deep purple silk (1680-81). Wiley's portraits continue outside the canvas with hand-carved wooden frames, each topped with Jewish emblems such as the hands of Kohen and the Lion of Judah. These decorative additives are not arbitrary, and bestow symbols of blessing, power, and majesty while the artist paints supportive texts into the patterning: the Ten Commandments for his Jewish subjects and the plea of Rodney King for those Arab. The process of finding the men in discos, malls, bars, and sporting venues can also be seen in a nine-minute video of Wiley combing Tel Aviv and Jerusalem for models. The exhibition shows Wiley is truly at home in his medium and subject matter, and excelling as he widens his horizons across the globe.'Kehinde Wiley's work always carry his familiar aura of mixing decoration with realism, pomp with insecurity, and in this particular catalogue these arttributes are exceptionally well focused. I will always enjoy stories of their survival. They hurt no one, and take nothing, that is not free to the earth. I do hope we hear more of Wade's story. He sounded as though he is a hand full. Most enjoyable, thank you.

The prestigious Emerging Voices Award was created in 1982 by the Architectural League of New York to showcase the work of early- to mid-career North American architects. Each year, through an invited competition, a jury selects practitioners or firms with a significant body of realized work that represents the best of its kind and has the potential to impact the future of architecture and landscape design. Emerging Voices 30 documents and critically assesses the first three decades of the League's Emerging Voices program. Essays by Reed Kroloff, Ashley Schafer, and Karen Stein, and concise observations by leading critics, architects, and historians complement the presentation of work from the more than two hundred individuals and firms that have been selected for the program. Emerging Voices 30 is an ideal lens through which to interpret the lasting impact of this influential group of architects.

Review This book offers a look back and a look forward, contextualizing forward thinking's impact on architectural culture and trends..a splendid account of changes in professional tastes over time..Well presented and well considered.Inclusion in the program also requires deep insight, namely an ability to frame one's work in relation to design theory, technology, and business practice. If that intellectual standard has secured Emerging Voices' allure among up-and-coming architects, then it also serves readers well here.

If I could talk to this author, my question would be: This is you, right? I like this form of writing because it seems like the most natural viewpoint to beginning writers, but it is deceptively not easy. The story line is a touching one. Moving from where you have spent all of your life to a new beginning is not as easy as one would think. Even tougher is losing your mama at an early age and get abused by a step mama. There is something about this book that is touching a nerve in me. Straight Ahead In The Dark was a good book and a good read.

The author, "Shorty", strips himself allowing the reader to see the evolution of a young man as he battles abuse, the loss of his mother and drug addiction. His testimony is relatable and told in a way that made us feel like we were there witnessing his experience first-hand. We laughed, cried and at times sat with our jaws dropped. Through the author's journey, we learned that no matter what life tosses our way, we have a choice to rise from the ashes of our past and inspire ourselves to become better people. With such a great start out of the gate, we're looking forward to his next literary work. We encourage you to buy this and future releases from S.M. Bailey! Brima Lamin & Chantale Wesley-Lamin

Someone please stick a pin in this writer's ego. It is in serious need of deflating.Shorty goes from a drug using, womanizing a-hole to magically living happily ever after with Sierra. She wants to have a baby but doesn't like her current husband all that much. Poor devil doesn't even see that he is Sierra's donor/rebound guy.Writing style could be better. Characters are a little flat.
