Persuasive speculation By Dana Rapisardi The Portrait of Mr. W.H., a little known work of Oscar Wilde, is a speculation upon the identity of the "Mr. W.H." named in the dedication of Shakespeare's sonnets. Part fiction, part literary analysis, Wilde's little book incorporates a persuasive analysis of the sonnets from which the narrator divines the existence of Willie Hughes, boy actor who became Shakespeare's muse--not just of the sonnets but of the plays as well. With the Bard's own words and metaphors, Wilde, through his narrator, supports every one of the claims therein, and offers many surprising and unique interpretations of the "evidence" in this long-standing literary mystery.Considering that throughout is repeated the fact there is absolutely no evidence whatsoever that anybody named Will or Willie Hughes ever existed, by invoking Shakespeare's language, puns, and known historical facts, the "lovely boy" is rendered real. Further effecting the reader's suspended or sustained disbelief, even skepticism shifts chimerically back and forth from one character to another, one of whom, formerly skeptic but turned believer, declares: "a hypothesis that explains everything is a certainty."The Portrait of Mr. W.H. also interweaves a brief history of known Elizabethan boy actors, and more of Wilde's musings on the transcendental love between men, out of Plato, turning this slender volume into quite a little banquet of facts, fantasy and feelings. For lovers of both Shakespeare and Wilde it makes altogether a fascinating and entertaining read.

By A Customer This little book is about Shakespeare's sonnets, but more than that it is a book about nineteenth-century young men and their obsession with Shakespeare. Two in particular become completely engaged by a particular literary interpretation--that Shakespeare wrote his beautiful sonnets not for a wealthy patron, but to his Rosalind, or rather to the actor who played all his lovely strong women--that is, to an adolescent boy. The book is a cautionary tale about heightened involvement in literary ideas. A literary idea can possess one as completely as opium, and can be just as dangerous

Middleton Wilde's The Portrait of Mr W.H., is an interesting account of the mystery of W.H., the person Shakespeare devoted his famous Sonnets. When one reads Wilde's prose, one can actually feel his thoughts and feelings. As critic and author, Peter Ackroyd, comments:`This is quintessential Wilde, introducing paradox into the realm of speculation and wit into the sphere of art.'Most English 19th century intellectuals were sincerely obsessed with Shakespeare's Sonnets, because it is the bard's notions on love, art, beauty and what it really means to be an artist.Rather than spoil the plot, let me just say that the book covers Aestheticism, Literary Criticism and obsession with `literature' which can, in some cases, be worse than opium addiction. If one has any interest in the Aesthetic movement of that period will find this novella fascinating. As is well known, Elizabethian England did not allow women to act on the stage as it was viewed as improper for a lady. Thus male actor's had to play the female roles. It is the protagonists thesis that the mysterious W.H. was a male actor who performed most of Shakespear's female roles, thus the Sonnets, and the proposal that the Bard had a particular fascination with the young actor. The Portrait of Mr. W.H. was written over a time period of a few years, the final draft finished by Wilde while he was incarcerated in the Reading Gaol. This final manuscript disappeared for many years to then turn up in a personal collection. This short piece is recommended to all those interested in Wilde and the 19th century Aesthetic movement.

There's no shortage of biographies of the bankers and the titans of industry like J.P. Morgan and the Rockefellers who made great fortunes during our last Gilded Age. There's also no shortage of biographies of the seven Presidents who led the country during those years that led up to the Great Depression. But what were the effects of the policies devised and put in place by those presidents and titans of industry on ordinary American workers? From Green Fields to Blue Collars suggests some answers to that question. It does so not by talking about "the working class" in the aggregate, but by offering an up-close and fine-grained history of just four working class families living in Ohio and Michigan, all immigrants or the children of immigrants. Each of their lives was playing out during economically turbulent years much like our present moment: a time of great income inequality. Like millions of other everyday American workers, they were trying as best they knew how to accommodate the transition from an agricultural to an industrial base, as we transition now from an industrial to a technological one. Which laws and policies helped ordinary Americans like them during those times, and which didn't? Which of their decisions, attitudes, strategies, and habits helped carry them through, and which didn't? Which of their attitudes, including their deep ambivalence about those in positions of power, were carried down the line, possibly even epigenetically, to their descendants? What might we learn, both individually and as a country, by looking closely at the decisions they made? Those questions should be of interest to anyone interested in the history of farming, of industrial production in Ohio and Michigan, in labor history, in the uses of genealogical research, and even to those interested in the most recent findings in genetics.

This is a tale about roots — she hails from Defiance OH — rootedness — took lots of work digging out what could be learned of German, Native American, lumberjack forebears far back as possible into the gene/neuron pool — and uprootedness — she's retired now from teaching at U. Mass.It would be correct to think of this book as an effort to synthesize, and a successful one.Horton doesn't much want to write about herself personally — she early on confesses how anti-confessional, how self-erasing, she'd like to be — but when she does nevertheless get personal that makes it all the more revealing:I love passages like these:"Stoically 'sticking it in the dirt' as I was told to do was good preparation for hard knocks to come. But its legacy has also been an almost complete inability to cry. It was left to my friends to do my crying for me when my son died. Yet in a kind of Freudian displacement, that stoicism seems to have increased the store of compassion Buddhists call karuna. Compassion for the powerless, for children, for animals; for the millions living an economically precarious life."Let me speak personally, as a Jew: what she calls karuna we call rachmones. Whatever language it's in, Horton has a lot of it, including the amount it took to bring mute forebears to life.

On the morning of 21 November 1920, Jane Boyle walked to Sunday Mass in the church where she would be married five days later. That afternoon she went with her fiancé to watch Tipperary and Dublin play a Gaelic football match at Croke Park. Across the cityfourteen men lay dead in their beds after a synchronised IRA attack designed to cripple British intelligence services in Ireland. Trucks of police and military rumbled through the city streets as hundreds of people clamoured at the metal gates of Dublin Castle seeking refuge. Some of them were headed for Croke Park. Award-winning journalist and author Michael Foley recounts the extraordinary story of Bloody Sunday in Croke Park and the 90 seconds of shooting that changedIreland forever. In a deeply intimate portrait he tells for the first time the stories of those killed, the police and militarypersonnel whowere in Croke Park that day, and the families left shattered in its aftermath, all against the backdrop of a fierce conflict that stretched from the streets of Dublin and the hedgerows of Tipperary to the halls of Westminster.

Review one of the stand-out books last year -- Newstalk's Off the Ball the critically acclaimed The Bloodied Field ... A familiar story told as never before. -- Irish Independent well-researched and enormously readable book -- History Ireland reads like a thriller -- Wexford People Cork-born author Michael Foley appears to have mastered a particular genre of GAA book writing which requires considerable ability and attention to detail in order to be a success ... [he] has set a high standard that anyone else who dares to venture down this tricky path will find difficult to emulate -- Enniscorthy Guardian, New Ross Standard outstanding -- Sunday Independent Sport a must read for both GAA and Irish history buffs ... Foley's book is one that will be read for years to come, by both sports fans and history scholars' -- Mayo Advertiser already now an Irish classic -- Irish Examiner one of the best Irish sports books of the year -- Gorey Guardian for those of you who might think this is a history book, think again ... a very interesting read -- Dungarvan Leader Irish sport book of the year in my mind -- RTE Sport's Damien O'Meara reading it at the moment ... and I think it's a fantastic piece of work -- Sunday Independent a must read for all history and sporting folk -- Clare County Express far and away, my book of the year ... this is one of those books that transcends sports ... brilliant ... the book of the year -- RTE Sport/RTE Radio's Damien O'Meara A stunning read. Builds the suspense superbly during the day with personal accounts of all the main protagonists involved on Bloody Sunday and its aftermath. Michael Foley has done not just the GAA, but the country, a service in putting this book together. It is a film waiting to happen. Historical research of this nature could have been heavy and lost the interest of the reader quickly, but he takes his painstaking research and turns it into a gripping thriller. Just brilliant. -- thescore.ie incredible -- campus.ie the definitive account of Bloody Sunday 1920 ... amazing ... phenomenally well put together ... one of the best books that I've read in a long time -- The Last Word with Matt Cooper Among the sports writing fraternity of the GAA, a healthy competition began rousing itself around 15 years ago, leading to over a decade of left-field 'concept' books and superb documenting of Gaelic Games. The trickle-down effect has emboldened many writers willing to experiment on their work. Each Christmas, Gaelic Games has a glut of sports books produced. For an indigenous sport and an amateur one at that, it is possibly even over-subscribed with capable authors. The high-water mark this Christmas, and for a few more, might just be reached by the release of Michael Foley's 'The Bloodied Field'... This is a rich book. It has soul and a beating heart and it stands alone as an astonishing, affecting piece of work. If you are in the habit of visiting Croke Park, you will never look at it again with the same eyes. Only greatness can achieve that effect. And this book is great -- Belfast Telegraph I couldn't put it down ... a fabulous piece of work ... read like a thriller ... he builds the suspense superbly ... a testament to the brilliance of Michael Foley, one of our best sportswriters ... you can tell from the opening page he has absolutely nailed this book -- RTE1's Sean O'Rourke Show the best ... a sports book, a history book, a thriller ... the writing is a treat ... Foley weaves every strand together with an expert hand for a book that makes everything else look unambitious -- Irish Times the book of the year in terms of sports books ... so well-written ... he takes you there ... I can't imagine too many better non-fiction books have been released this year in any genre -- TV3's Ireland AM rarely has a sports book told you more about and Ireland at one moment in time ... probably the most exhaustively and best researched mainstream Irish sports book ever, yet reads like the best of historical novels -- Irish Examiner thanks to ... The Bloodied Field ... we now have a much more vivid and greater understanding of the frightening events that happened -- Irish Examiner brilliant -- Second Captains truly brilliant -- Balls.ie

Bloodied Field Indeed By Doug James Mr. Foley's book contains a detailed, vivid and well researched account of this very sad and defining episode of Irish history. He obviously spent a large amount of time examining Croke Park witness statements, U.K. Government investigation papers, Auxiliary, Black and Tan, and RIC accounts. He has distilled the information into an excellent book. From Grangemockler, to Soloheadbeg to Dublin, he quite skillfully weaves together Tipperary and Irish Football's early 20th century history with distinct portraits of the grand footballers and the IRA. Sometimes being the same individuals. With the Dublin Castle officials attempting to impose a ban across Ireland on Irish Football, and other indigenous sports, the Irish spirit survives with ingenious creativity, and stealth, to continue Football training and competitions.Who knew that County Tipperary domination of early 20th century Irish Football combined with Michael Collins's Squad activities would lead to a very unpleasant and disastrous 21 November 1920?

In fact compared with a lot of autobiographies and sports stories presently available it is book of real substance. A book that tells the story of a stadium full of football fans that fell victim to one of the bloodiest atrocities committed against the Irish population during the Irish war of Independence. On 21 November 1920 thousands of unarmed civilians were fired upon and killed by British Crown forces in response to an IRA attack earlier in the day. The book is carefully crafted and gives a detailed background to the events leading up to the day. The author has clearly done an enormous amount of research and presents his findings in a manner that really paints a vivid picture of what life was like in Ireland at that time. This is a sporting book that incorporates history and culture. Of particular interest to anyone who is interested in Irish history or the GAA.

Desperate to solve a global food shortage, ExoGen scientist Dr. Ella Masse oversees the creation and release of RC-714, a gene that unlocks millions of years of adaptation and evolution, allowing crops to use long dormant junk DNA to rapidly adapt to any environment. The world’s food supply grows aggressively, occupying every inch of earth, no matter how inhospitable. World hunger is averted. Humanity flourishes. RC-714 is digested, absorbed and passed on. The Change affects small, fast breeding mammals first. They multiply with the same aggressive speed as the ExoGen plants, but a new, insatiable hunger drives them to violence. War between species breaks out. And then RC-714 reaches humanity, along with every other large creature on the planet. Civilization implodes, as every living thing that consumed the ExoGen crops begins to adapt to a world full of predators, accessing genes dating back to the beginning of life itself. Peter Crane and his son Jakob survive the Change, living in their family farmhouse and eating non-ExoGen food from a biodome, one of many provided by Ella Masse, who discovered the ramifications of her breakthrough too late. The pair ekes out a living in a world full of monsters, surviving until Ella shows up on their doorstep with her daughter, pursued by desperate predators and men alike. As the farmhouse falls under attack, Crane learns that the end of humanity, of life on Earth, can still be averted: if Ella Masse and her daughter survive, and if they make it to the other side of the country without being captured...or consumed. Jeremiah Knight merges the science of Michael Crichton with the horror of Stephen King in this fresh take on the post-apocalypse, creating a true worst-case scenario for GMO crops that will have people reading labels before eating their next pepper, tomato or kernel of corn.

Jeremiah Knight is a new nom de plume of Jeremy Robinson signaling a new turn in his writing. Fortunately for us he keeps his creative monsters and the might of the military trained warrior. The first half dozen chapters sets up the rest of the story. The scientists have ended worldwide hunger. But then things go horribly wrong. We start the adventure with Peter and his son Jakob living in their secure bio dome eating only food that they grow inside the dome, non-contaminated food. They are going through their typical day when they have an unexpected visitor. Unexpected because there are very few humans left and also because it is someone Peter knows. In steps Ella, one of the scientists who help develop the GMO’s that caused so much havoc on the world. Along with her is her daughter, Anne. Ella has come to ask for Peter’s help in getting to Boston where she believes she will be able to do something to help resolve the issues caused by the GMO’s. She also brings along some predators. They attack the house and it is no longer a safe place. Luckily Peter is ex-military, a Critical Skills Operator. He has rigged the house to blow if the need arises. Well it has. The four escape and start their journey across the country heading east.A disturbing nod to the popularity of bacon will give one a chuckle as well as a very disturbed feeling. Nonstop action, unusual, imaginative creatures and an interesting story will draw one into this story and leave one wanting more. At least it left me wanting more. This is a great book for adults and well as young adults who like post-apocalyptic stories with a little bit different bent as well as those who like adventure stories and monstrous creatures. The main characters are likeable, strong, even when weak, and have typical human failings.

Awesome book about monsters in a post-apocalyptic world By Wim Biemans This is the first book by Jeremy Robinson under his new pseudonym Jeremiah Knight. If you've every read anything by Robinson, and know that this new series is situated in a post-apocalyptic world where things have gone horribly wrong, you would expect a lot of action and monsters galore. Well, to say that you won't be disappointed is a major understatement. The story is like a never-ending rolling coaster with hardly any breaks in the action where you can put the book away to get something to eat. And the monsters are incredible!!! I won't give any spoilers, but really, you won't believe what you're reading! The only negative thing about this book is that it is way too short and we'll have to wait an entire year for the second book in the series...

37 of 38 people found the following review helpful. Come on, one little bite isn't gonna kill you By Garnet Severns Have to say first off, I LOVED this book! Jeremiah Knight writes with such a passion, it's hard not to get caught up in his characters and, of course, his GMOs (genetically modified other-things). If you're like me, then you have read the other reviews that explain the books premise, so you know the gist. So, instead of explaining it again, just know that this is a fast-paced, hang on to your hats, wild ride that never lets up. By the time you finish this book, you won't look at bunny rabbits, pigs, opossums or pretty much anything else the same again, let alone your own garden.Knight acknowledges that this is the first book of a series. If the rest are as imaginative as this one, I hope he is planning on at least a few more! This book reminds me a lot of Jeremy Bishop's Torment, in as much as Knight and Bishop take a fiercely debated topic and put their own unique, demented spin on it.Pick up Hunger, and while you are at it, Torment, would look great on your bookshelf too.Checkmate!

Ai Weiwei: On the Table surveys the full scope of Weiwei's career, from his early days in 1980s New York to his present-day status as the best-known and most influential Chinese artist in the world. Work by this media-savvy activist calling for greater freedom in China can now be found in leading contemporary art museums and collections worldwide; the image of his taunting, irreverent middle finger imposed atop touristy monuments and landscape photos has become ubiquitous, his sunflower seed installations iconic. This volume includes previously unseen new work, as well as a range of key pieces from the past 35 years, presented in a beautiful clothbound format. Ai Weiwei (born 1957) spent his youth in exile, returning to Beijing at the end of the Cultural Revolution in 1976. He lived in the US, mostly in New York, from 1981 to 1993, and in the wake of his exposure to the work of Warhol, Duchamp and Johns, began altering readymade objects and creating conceptually driven art. In 2008 he was commissioned as the artistic design consultant for the Beijing National Stadium built for the Summer Olympics. The artist has openly criticized the Chinese government and was famously incarcerated for 81 days in 2011 on no official charges.

Somehow the Devil got me! The filthiest fruit of Robert Crumb’s fertile imagination   From the very beginning, even before the sexual revolution made Robert Crumb the world’s most celebrated underground cartoonist, he felt compelled to commit his sexual fantasies to paper. Once upon a time, he’d destroy them, fearful of others discovering his quirky tastes. Then he found that baring his soul provided a sort of therapy, and since has memorialized every desire.Crumb’s personal selection of these works first appeared in 2007 in a gorgeous, but pricey, TASCHEN Collector’s Edition, complete with slipcase, lithographic print, and many strips hand colored by Crumb himself. Now, we bring you the compact edition, offering the same high quality obsession at a bargain price! This compendium includes the strips My Troubles With Women, If I Were a King, A Bitchin’ Bod, and How To Have Fun With a Strong Girl, as well as 60 single page drawings. Recurring motifs include big strong girls, artistic wimps triumphantly subduing said girls, cavewomen, Yetis, vulture demonesses, bitter little guys, and did we mention big strong girls?

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. A masterful volume of comic art. By monte beauchamp Great design, choice of paper stock, and coloring of the strips, which originally appeared in black-and-white.A bargain of a price too. Taschen--and R. Crumb--strike again. A masterful volume of comic art.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Good sexually explicit collection By AntaeusQ Nice collection of Robert Crumb comics, much of it in color. The paper is of the absorbent variety, which works best for reproducing comic art colored in flat colors. I wouldn't have included the 40 some pages of the Championship Wrestling, which isn't as sexual as one would wish, but overall, a good selection of his work, old and new.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. At Last Affrodable! By Amazon Customer I was not buying the $500 plus edition, thank goodness they made a mere mortals edition. Well drawn stories, of course Crumb did so much sex stuff some of your favorites might be missing, but well worth it nonetheless.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Poetry for dog lovers By Strawberry Girl This book is a delightful treasury of poetry about dogs, ranging from the humorous to tear-jerkers. The poems are arranged into three categories: The Friend of Man, In Lighter Vein, and The Happy Hunting Grounds. One of the humorous entries, "The Bath" by R. C. Lehmann, begins:Hang garlands on the bathroom door;Let all the passages be spruce; For, lo, the victim comes once more,And, ah, he struggles like the deuce! And from The Happy Hunting Grounds section, here are the first two stanzas of "In the Mansion Yard" by William Hervey Woods:There's no need now to look about my feet, Or lift a cautious chair -But uses of old years my senses cheat, And still I think him there.Along the hearth-rug stretched in full content, Fond of the fire as I -Ah! there were some things with the old dog went I had not thought could die. What Amazon is selling is a copy of the book published in 1920. The quality of the copy is good, and the text is large and readable. This book would make a great gift for the dog-lover in your life!

*Includes pictures *Includes accounts of the fighting around New York City *Includes online resources and a bibliography for further reading *Includes a table of contents After the siege of Boston forced the British to evacuate that city in March 1776, Continental Army commander George Washington suspected that the British would move by sea to New York City, the next logical target in an attempt to end a colonial insurrection. He thus rushed his army south to defend the city. Washington guessed correctly, but it would be to no avail. Unlike Boston, New York City's terrain featured few defensible positions. The city lacked a high point from which to launch a siege, as the peninsula of Boston was fortunate to have. Moreover, Washington wasn't sure defending the city was necessary, hoping that an expedition launched toward Quebec like the one Benedict Arnold had led in late 1775 would keep the British away from New York anyway. However, Congress thought otherwise, and demanded that Washington defend New York. Washington thus did what he was told, and it nearly resulted in the army’s demise. In the summer of 1776, the British conducted the largest amphibious expedition in North America’s history at the time, landing over 20,000 troops on Long Island. British General William Howe, who had led the British at Bunker Hill and would later become commander in chief of the armies in North America, easily captured Staten Island, which Washington was incapable of defending without a proper navy. Washington’s army attempted to fight, but Washington was badly outmaneuvered, and his army was nearly cut off from escape. The withdrawal across New York City was enormously disorderly, with many of Washington's troops so scared that they deserted. Others were sick as a result of the dysentery and smallpox plaguing the Continental Army in New York. In what was arguably the worst defeat of the Revolution, Washington was ashamed, and he also felt betrayed, by both his troops and Congress. To escape from New York, Washington led a tactical retreat across the East River and off Long Island in the middle of the night without British knowledge. This retreat prevented the annihilation of the colonial army in New York, but with Washington being pushed west across New Jersey and into Pennsylvania, Congress was forced to flee Philadelphia. And with this string of crucial British successes in 1776, the Revolution was on the brink of failure. The Continental Army, now in Pennsylvania, had lost over 5,000 men during its retreat through New York and New Jersey and now had fewer than 5,000 able soldiers. That winter, one of the men in camp, Thomas Paine, would write The American Crisis, beginning with the famous words, “These are the times that try men’s souls.” However, Washington would famously cross the Delaware River on Christmas night to attack British forces at Trenton, and he was able to compel the British to suspend the winter campaign after fighting around Princeton. Nonetheless, in the early months of 1777, the colonists were in dire straits and the British were plotting a campaign in the coming months to put down the revolution once and for all. The Greatest Revolutionary War Battles: The New York-New Jersey Campaign comprehensively covers the events that led up to the campaign, the fighting itself, and the aftermath of the conflict. Along with maps and pictures of important people, places, and events, you will learn about the campaign like never before, in no time at all.

Book was really the battle of New York. Pretty good synopsis of that otherwise. The fight in New Jersey was almost left completely out. No synopsis of that battle so skimpy it should have not been mentioned.

It made me look at some of the Classics in a whole new way.For those who are unfamiliar with this concept - as I was - the author runs an art blog. One of his challenges to his readers was to recreate classic works of art. Original concept, brilliantly executed.Tiny critique - on the few pages where the remade photo spanned two pages, it was a little distracting to basically break the seam in order to view the image. Again though, most photos didn't do this. Just a note for next time.
