Sid is finally growing as a character, shedding her whiny ways and continuing to kick butt. Smoke is still an enigma, and is one of my favorite characters. The secondary characters are also well fleshed out, and I find myself wanting more (why did Rachel whisper so much? What was she saying? Who is behind her?). A great series to get involved in - can't wait for the next one!

If she needs a little help sometimes it's o.k. because that help comes from Smoke. Smoke is the other main character. You want to know more about him. The author gives you just enough to get you by. I can't wait for the next book to come out!

What to do after a triumph like that?Well, in Wharton's case, she went the opposite direction, with a gentle romance called "The Glimpses of the Moon." It's the cliched love-or-money storyline that's existed as long as love and money, but Wharton elevates it with some social satire and lushly sensual writing.Nick Lansing and Susy Branch are young, attractive, clever, arty, and poor -- they are confidantes of the wealthy, but can't live like them. So Susy comes up with a scheme: they'll get married, and live for a year off the honeymoon gifts and guest houses -- and if either of them gets a better offer, they'll divorce immediately with no hard feelings.All goes smoothly for the idyllic first months. But when staying in Venice, Nick finds that they are staying at a villa because Susy is helping the house's mistress meet up with her boytoy -- and that Susy's acid-tongued pal has just inherited a fortune. But despite their pact, Susy finds it increasingly difficult to imagine a life without Nick -- especially when he seems to be involved with a clever young archaeologist's daughter.The story of "Glimpses of the Moon" is not the selling point of this onetime bestseller -- you can pretty much guess how it will turn out, and how many days the pact between Nick and Susy will last. It slacks off as Nick and Susy's relationship deteriorates, but the first half is awash in beautiful imagery ("... a great white moth like a drifting magnolia petal"). And of course, we always have the overhanging symbolism of the moon.And it wouldn't be a Wharton book without some social commentary -- in this case, about the idle wealthy eagerly snatching onto any trendy artist, illicit lover or amusement that will fill their empty days. And of course, the lesson that love should trump greed.Wharton's knack for characterization doesn't hurt either -- Nick is a penniless artist hoping to keep this pact-marriage together, and Susy a social wit without many scruples, until she inadvertantly drives Nick away. The supporting characters could have a book devoted to each one as well -- the acid-tongued peer, a rather snotty young girl, and a desperate wealthy matron bouncing from one "toyboy" relationship to another."Glimpses of the Moon" is a simple boy-and-girl story, but with a clever social twist questioning what happens AFTER happily-ever-after. Romantic, sensual and sometimes tartly amusing.

One of my favorite love stories By A Customer I was completely spell bound by this book, you cant guess the end ,though i did try, You are in constant anticipation as to the next turn of events , and extatic one minute and ,holding you breath the next. what a fabulous ending.

10 of 11 people found the following review helpful. an entertaining oddball of a book By mulcahey Given the flawlessly smooth machinery of THE HOUSE OF MIRTH and THE CUSTOM OF THE COUNTRY, it's kind of weird to come across a Wharton novel as structurally sloppy as this one. More uncharacteristically yet, the first three chapters, in my opinion, are just plain shabbily written. But Wharton is never without her reasons, and once she's disposed of the characters' "backstory" as expeditiously (if inelegantly) as possible at the top of the book, she hits her stride in earnest and gives us all of the pleasures of a great Wharton tale -- chiseled prose, trenchant humor, sociological precision, briskly paced and compactly dramatized.Something that strikes me about this book: it'd make a much better movie, be much easier to adapt, than either HOUSE OF MIRTH or AGE OF INNOCENCE. It's got fewer locations, a much smaller cast of characters -- heck, it even has a happy ending, and an honestly earned one. (In fact, the conceit it starts with -- a couple in love who'd like to stay together, but alas, there's no money in it -- is pretty much the idea Preston Sturges started with in THE PALM BEACH STORY, an audience-pleaser for sure.)

He very effectively conveys the story, depicts the context, communicates the feelings and reactions. The sadistic punishment regime of the Catholic brothers shames their religion, and distorts the consciousness of the schoolboys. The tender young Sabby adjusts to live with it, but later recognises its perverse effect on him. The boys manage to develop a close knit social group to survive it. The education itself is shallow. Such regimes were not uncommon, and Sen’s graphic denunciation has moral power.Geoff Crocker Editor Atheist Spirituality web site

I read the series when it originally came out in the 80's, re-read it in the 90's when it was reissued in trade paperback (and recommended it to others), and now have purchased and read it for a 3rd or 4th time. I realize I am reviewing the 2nd book in the series, but I liked it better than the first.Dan Valentine is a gay out-of-work social worker/bar tender in Boston; Clarisse Lovelace is a former real estate agent/souvenir shop salesperson and Dan's best friend. The action relocates from Boston (1st, 3rd & 4th books) to Provincetown Cape Cod for the summer season. Dan and Clarisse stumble over several dead bodies, a lot of humor (the yodeling Swiss Miss Restaurant owner & Dan's affinity for short, hirsute Men), and work their way through solving the mystery. The book is replete with humorous dialogue between them and hilarious descriptions of a resort town accommodating the family vacation alongside the nude beach/gay summer mecca.The author of this book was a gay couple, one of whom was a screenwriter for the movie Beetlejuice.

It will appeal to anyone that is a fan of fishing, or sailing or the San Francisco Bay area for that matter.In the early 1900's, young Jack pursues poachers in several short storys that are often funny and sometimes hair-raising! The characters are colorful and full of mischief. Without motors on their boats and the power of the sail only, it's easy to get caught up in the early day version of the car chase as Jack chases one criminal after another. Great adventure!

6 of 7 people found the following review helpful. Blown away by this book! By Colleen McMahon "Tales of the Fish Patrol" is a series of short stories or reminiscences by Jack London. The narrator is a teenage boy who is working on the "fish patrol", a small group of semi-deputized boatmen who patrol San Francisco bay and attempt to enforce the fishing regulations. It reads as very autobiographical and London did do similar work at that age, but how much of these are fictionalized I don't know.It doesn't matter, though, to the casual reader, because these stories grab you and pull you in. No matter that I'm unfamiliar with sailing boats of a century-plus ago, nor the geography of San Francisco Bay, nor the means and regulations of fishing at that time. London describes everything so vividly that I was never lost. These stories are really gripping and suspenseful and while each can be read individually, the series is an overall narrative that circles around perfectly from start to finish.The one drawback is that like other authors of his time, London repeats and reinforces ugly ethnic stereotypes and language that is offensive to modern ears. It is jarring but can be overlooked in the pacing of the stories by many readers; however for this reason I wouldn't recommend these stories for younger readers.I would love to see an edited edition that preserves these exciting stories without the ethnic slurs; they would also make a fun TV or movie adaptation.Really worth checking out, especially for the price! I had already been familiar with "Call of the Wild" and "White Fang" but will now be seeking out more of London's work.

A San Francisco classic By sekander The appeal of these stories is universal but Bay Area residents with a sense of place and an appreciation of historywill absolutely enjoy the tales spun by the master in their own back yard. Travel back to a rough hewn time before the modern age and meet some amazing characters-the type that built the City we know and love. Sometimes dismissed as young adult fiction, and not worthy of London's elite canon, these tales, nonetheless, are a vivid portrait of a young, emerging San Francisco.

I really like how the pages are well laid out without all the clutter that so many textbooks include that I'm sure few students ever read. Topics are well explained, key points clearly identified and highlighted, and illustrated with examples and well thought out figures. Lots of good problems with solutions to odd-numbered. The hard copy version I got had heavy bond cutouts at the end to use for chapter review.I bought this book so I could help my daughter with her college Adv. Calculus class. I can review the material, do the problems and then we discuss over Skype. I use an external camera with Skype to illustrate concepts and help her understand the key ideas.

While the ebook itself is short, it provides lots of different ideas on how to get started and then how to come up with inspiration for the lyrics, thereby making it still useful for those who want to get into song writing.My husband composes Ragtime music from time to time, including one for me, but he has never had lyrics in any of his compositions. I would've liked to know what he could've come up with for his composition for me and therefore would show him his book if he were interested in adding them.

From the cover you'd guess it just has a slew of cute pictures of freshly born wildcats. Well yes... but that's not all. Each set of pictures is accompanied by the basics -- birth date, name, zoo -- but also far more. The endangered status of each of the species is listed with a compact yet highly literate and helpful description of the characteristics and range of the cat. By the time you're done, you or your child will know far more than you'd expect from just looking at kitty pictures.I gave this book to a somewhat precocious six-year-old who proudly read the names of each animal showing me many pictures. Because the locations of the zoos are listed, we had a chance to look at maps from around the world to see where each baby lives. It was a joyous, fun but also educational experience for us both.

I love big cats and in fact plan to return to school to major in Animal Science in order to work with carnivores--big cats to be precise! But back to this book. Every page is filled with the most beautiful photos of cubs, gives information of each cub, as well as facts about each breed and the sobering fact that many of these are quickly going extinct in the wild, due to poaching, or habitat loss. How sad it would be to live in a world where these beautiful and regal cats no longer exist! How sad too, that cubs like these may never know what living free in the wild is like!On the other hand, many are being bred in zoos and because of this we are able to see up close these precious and sweet faced cubs. They are all adorable! If you love big cats and cubs, I would definitely recommend this book! I thank the authors and photographers for publishing this. It makes a great addition to my small but growing library of nature books!

I thought it might be too juvenile for him; however, the facts on the cats keep his attention while the pictures are just stunning. Even very young children would enjoy looking through the pictures or learning the names of the various cat species. One word of note, the book is much smaller than I anticipated. I didn't read the specs on it so I was surprised when it arrived much smaller than your standard picture book (think board book size but with paper pages). It doesn't detract from the book - it was just surprising to me. Highly recommend this book to any Zooborns, animal, or big cat fan!

From beginning to end the story flowed seamlessly.The plot centers around Riley Doogan, a witch who is slowly learning there's more to her heritage than she ever imagined, and Finn Dunraven, a sensual and powerful man with secrets of his own. The intensity between the two builds throughout the story, binding them tighter.They'll need that bond as they face down an enemy wielding the darkest of magics, bent on destroying everything Riley holds dear.The book ends on a cliffhanger and I honestly can't wait to read the next book in the series!

By Susan Newman Journey - Book OneRiley is a "witch" living a normal human life in New York City until the day HE walks into her life. Finn Dunraven is the sexiest man she's ever met. He knew her beloved Grandma and needs her to go back to Maine to assist himHer "normal" life is then turned upside down, when she must now come to terms with who and what she is. He is the new "leader" of her Grandma's coven, and now must protect them from an unknown evil using dark magic. She finds out Finn is an Immortal and that throws a wrench into her feelings for him. They are attracted to each other and the sparks do fly!!! This book was very cool and Claudy works her magic once more. I can't wait until her second book, Journey-Reckoning is released.There is strong sexual content and language in this book....makes this read hot hot hot!!!

Having blown through Rain because I couldn't put it down, I had high expectations when I started Storm. My expectations were easily met and exceeded.Shaun Harbinger continues to bring an amazingly well written story to readers and stays true to as much realism in his format as one can get in a zombie story. His vision of keeping his characters real and personable is a credit to his talent. He gives us everyday people that quickly become hero's without resorting to pseudo comic book or Rambo knockoffs.Although it's obviously a series, he leaves you wanting more without leaving you feeling ripped off or thrown off a cliff.Thank you again for another book that is hard to put down. Very much looking forward to the next one!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. I Love This Series! By Ursula K. Raphael This sequel begins literally just a few days after the first book ends, and I love the seamless storyline. Unfortunately, Alex gets the bright idea to go ashore to look for his family, even though he doesn't have a clue where they might be. Naturally, everything goes wrong for him as soon as his feet hit the ground, and he is separated from Lucy. Luckily, he meets another group: Sam, Tanya and Jax. These new survivors seem better prepared than Alex's first group. However, the military is just as much of threat, if not more, as the undead...especially when Alex discovers more information about the ongoing infection.There are several surprising and horrifying twists, which help keep up the pace of the story, but I thought the second group of survivors were too much like Alex's first group. I would like to see more character development, even if it's just Alex's perception of people around him.The cliffhanger is absolutely tragic, and I can't wait to read the next one!

First there is Rain, and now there is Storm!Very seldom do you find books, that only gets better with each new release when it is written as a series.. and this one does just that!I very much enjoyed reading and following Alex and his new friends as they try to find Lucy while also trying to make sense of a new virus that has seemed to have become mutated. The author manages to keep the storyline moving at a good pace, and with a surprise or two.As in Rain, Storm has no editing issues or grammar mistakes, and there is some adult language.Thank you Mr. Harbinger for this 2nd book in your wonderful series, and I truly am looking for the next one, Lightening !

Watercolor can feel like an unpredictable and unforgiving medium at first.This is what makes watercolor both challenging and exciting. With experience and the right tools you will learn how to gain some control over the paint, be able to predict how the pigments will behave, master different techniques and learn how to fix mistakes. Even though an element of chance will always be part of the appeal, you can enjoy a fearless and relaxed approach to watercolor painting.Watercolor is a very versatile medium that can look quite traditional or contemporary and is suited to a variety of styles from photorealism to abstract, from low contrast to very high contrast, from precise to loose.It can be painted in a traditional transparent way on paper or it can be mixed with other media and painted on a variety of supports: Yupo paper, canvas, paper prepared with medium or gesso, paper mounted on board and more.This book will give you an overview of some of the many possibilities watercolor painting offers. About the Author Sandrine Pelissier has been living in North Vancouver, Canada for the last 15 years. She teaches workshops in her North Vancouver studio, and via several Vancouver-area arts associations. She is an adventurous artist who enjoys experimenting with various media and techniques. She is inspired by exciting patterns in both nature and cityscape and has a fascination for people and faces. Although her art could be described as somewhat realistic there is often a bit of abstraction or a part left to chance or fantasy in her work. She  has had paintings exhibited in numerous juried exhibitions in Canada and in the United States. By S.W.painter This is a wonderful book with valuable advice for beginning projects, a comprehensive materials list, lovely detailed photographs and great suggestions for innovative techniques. I think painters at any level could learn something from this book.
