Effective monitoring of the ecological factors is one of the prerequisite of all the environmental studies and practices. Methodological literature on the examination of physical and chemical parameters of water is so disseminated that a worker in this field is often confused in search and choice of correct method. There is hardly any wide-ranging literature to cover the problem entirely. In the present effort, I have attempted to present the analytical methods as well as the general introduction, importance and hazards for a wide array of physical and chemical factors pertaining to water.

In 19th-century Vienna, a drama of love, fate, and will is played out amid the intellectual ferment that defined the era.

Josef Breuer, one of the founding fathers of psychoanalysis, is at the height of his career. Friedrich Nietzsche, Europe's greatest philosopher, is on the brink of suicidal despair, unable to find a cure for the headaches and other ailments that plague him. When he agrees to treat Nietzsche with his experimental "talking cure", Breuer never expects that he, too, will find solace in their sessions. Only through facing his own inner demons can the gifted healer begin to help his patient.

In When Nietzsche Wept, Irvin Yalom blends fact and fiction, atmosphere and suspense to unfold an unforgettable story about the redemptive power of friendship.

Tsafos "When Nietzsche Wept" is a fictional encounter between Friedrich Nietzsche, the nineteenth century philosopher, and Josef Breuer, a Viennese doctor who is one of the founders of psychoanalysis. The story takes place in 1882, when Doctor Breuer accepted to help Nietzsche fight his hemicrania and despair. What follows is a captivating story of intrigue, betrayal and the development of an intimate friendship. But the book's highlight is the dialogue between Nietzsche and Breuer, in which the author touches upon the issues of life, death, love, lust, passion and freedom. In the process of the story, Irvin Yalom presents Nietzsche's philosophy in a portrayal that is candid and captures the complicated mystique of the brilliant philosopher. And, Dr. Yalom's story-telling is so lucid that one can fully comprehend the logic of Nietzsche's philosophy. In the end, "When Nietzsche Wept" is a window into Nietzsche's innermost thoughts and psyche.Equally compelling is Yalom's discussion of psychoanalysis. If Nietzsche's words are half of the book's appeal, the other half has to be the development of the dialogue between Nietzsche and Breuer. The psychoanalytical method is being invented as the book progresses -- and Dr. Yalom has done an excellent job of presenting the foundations of psychoanalysis as if springing out of spontaneous dialogue between two men. This book is not only an excellent and easy read, but also highly didactic, appealing to those interested in philosophy or psychology. But more broadly, Dr. Yalom's words have such power and applicability that no one could be left uninterested in what he has to say.

Intellectually Challenging and Personally Meaningful By Daniel Jolley This is one of the most intellectually stimulating, personally relevant, important books I have ever read. What a rare treat Yalom has given the world. That being said, this book may not be for everyone (but what is?). In many ways, I feel as if this novel was written just for me, and I feel sure that many other readers likewise come away feeling the book was written especially for them. Do you have to know Nietzsche in order to enjoy this book? You do not, but it will certainly appeal to you more if you do. I approached this book purely as a Nietzsche admirer, and I worried that my favorite philosopher might be portrayed poorly or unacceptably in its pages. In fact, he was not. No one can say whether this fictional treatment of Nietzsche is a true depiction of this great man, but it really does not matter. The importance of this book comes not through the descriptions of its characters, but from the meaning you as an individual take from its themes. These themes are grand and universal, the themes that Nietzsche addressed in his factual life--the meaning of life, fear of aging and death, each person's place in society, and both aloneness and loneliness. Everyone knows these themes, the emotions they stir up, the doubts they employ as daily hurdles on the living of one's life, the truly cosmic loneliness that each individual knows and combats at some point or points in his/her life. Not everyone can face these challenges or even acknowledge them; those who cannot will do well to stay away from this book. What a joy it is to read a truly intellectually challenging work in these modern times. Don't read this book to be entertained. Read this book to seek understanding of life and your place in it. I cannot stress enough how personal the message of this book seems to be. In the final pages, Nietzsche revealed to Dr. Breuer his one great fear, and that fear was my own great fear, expressed in words that described it better than I ever could. I had to put the book down momentarily and just say "My God . . ." That gave this book incredible meaning for me. I should say that I did not come away overjoyed or overly burdened from the experience of finishing the book, but I certainly came away more in tune with my own thoughts and my own philosophy, challenged to remain steadfast in my own intellectual thoughts and pursuits, and buoyed (yet not elated) to know that at least one other person on earth has knowledge of the intellectual and emotional struggles that I sometimes resigned myself to believe were solely my own. Please, do not start reading this book unless and until you are ready to devote yourself to it and to yourself. The first few chapters are not gripping and do not really offer a visionary glimpse of the meaning and magic of the book. The early conversations, particularly between Nietzsche and Breuer, are sometimes rather stilted and "phony." Do not be discouraged in the early stages of the read because intellectual stimulation and personal challenge await you soon thereafter, and I believe that you will find yourself hard pressed to stop reading until the very end. More importantly, the book will remain with you even after you have placed it back on the shelf. That is the greatest praise that a novel can be given.

46 of 46 people found the following review helpful. Inspiration Through Sorrow In Old Vienna By Scott Carpenter Breuer and Nietzsche never met, but Dr. Yalom considers the intriguing possibilities in this novel of psychological and philosophical ideas. Dr. Yalom is a professor of phsychiatry at Stanford and a proponent of "existential psychotherapy," so he is able to create drama derived almost entirely from the emotional portraits of the characters rather than the actions and struggles of the characters in the external world. Yalom's achievement is to make the reader care about Breuer and Nietzsche as they struggle to confront (or avoid) their greatest fears and weaknesses. The reader is drawn into intimate conversation with the brilliant but unloveable Nietzsche and the gifted but ungrateful Breuer. The necessary whining is balanced by just enough action and intellectual history to propel the narrative forward. Along the way the genesis of psychotherapy and existentialism is consisely explained using dialogue from Breuer, Freud and Nietzsche as well as quotations from their actual works. But this book not about theory. The sorrow of these great men is transformed into inspiration for the reader as they struggle to embrace the wisdom of amor fati, to love one's fate. We are reminded of our own need to accept complete responsibility for our choices and to boldly face life's challenges. One need not embrace an existentialist worldview to find inspiration in such advice. Neither does the Professor preach philosophy in his drama. Rather, the reader is invited to achieve a synthesis of his own after observing the strivings of the characters. Vienna was an intellectual microcosm of Europe in the late 19th Century, so the city bcomes a character in the story, with various characters, some historical, some fictional, acting as the sounding board for Breuer's and Nietzsche's nascent philosophies. This is not a book for readers put off by lengthy dialogues, and it is short on dramatic action and romance. But for those who might enjoy urgent and intimate conversation with great minds on the verge of their greatest achievements, When Nietzsche Wept may be as therapeutic as an afternoon with close friends over cafe melange at the Cafe Landtmann.

She already had a huge supply of colored pens, so she dove right into the book. Could also have bought another one for me, as I love to color and design too!

The once great United States has slowly eroded from within to become a very different place than what our forefathers had hoped for and even what our grand parents grew up in. Many in the country wished for America to shed the all the political correctness, the greed and back stabbing, and the convoluted corrupt political quagmire and go back to its roots. They hoped for a re-set. When our nation’s economy crashes and the whole nation turns quickly into chaos they get their wish for a major reset only to find that it also means brutal violence, starvation, and the loss of a great many lives, most of which are innocent lives. Once started down this road to chaos does America still have what it takes to rebuild and restore our culture again to become the great land our forefathers envisioned? This story only follows two brave Americans trying to cope with a country in chaos. As always in my stories there is no foul language or sex though there is some violence. My stories are only meant to provide an afternoon or evening of reading enjoyment. If when reading any story you find that an occasional grammatical error spoils your whole experience then you may wish forgo reading this story as I am sure some errors can be found within it despite my best efforts.

The main character has a self-deprecating voice reminiscient of that in the Odd Thomas books. However, as the book progresses, the bad grammar and awkward language usage become so prevalent that it is impossible to ignore and try to plod through. The book ends so abruptly, the author surely just got tired of writing...it read like a sloppy junior high writer trying to get out of doing an assignment.

By Beth Why do most of these types of books have page upon page telling about all the guns and ammo they have. I don't mind them telling about the guns and ammo but think the story drags down when they go into all the descriptions etc. of the guns. To me a gun is a gun, I don't need to know all it's history. I think the dialog between some of the characters sounds made up. I don't think "real" people speak this way.

Riesce a tirare fuori collegamenti complessi, perché li conosce a fondo.”

'Definitive' doesn't tell half the story..." 2 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Finally!! A well written Zombie book. By Luna Reyes Really...... RYAN CASEY..... I think I would be scared to be in your head even for a minute! I really enjoyed his writing and the plot was as realistic as can be in a world full of undead and crazy people.Hayden is one of my favorite characters in the zombie book world.. because Ryan Casey actually makes Hayden's character feel real..He didn't start off as a hero who automatically knew what to do. you see him grow, fight past his shadows and become a man you need to be in this world..... I actually teared up at the end... like I said you really don't see things coming.... I have read so many zombie stories and still love many of them..... but I am sure a lot of people understand what I mean when I say some, no matter how good is just predictable....Hayden and Sara meet some very interesting people along the way. Some people made me cringe, gag and wonder to myself if I was ever in this situation WTF would I do.He really knows how to throw you for a loop when you think... oh yeah I know whats going to happen.., nope not predictable in anyway... I hated and loved this book and whats really crazy is ........ ANOTHER CLIFF HANGER.. but don't worry not one that you will go crazy at the end like not knowing if anyone is dead or not.. just one good enough to know another book is on the way... O.K so you might go crazy just a little... but trust me so worth it.Just one warning THIS BOOK IS NOT FOR THE FAINT OF HEARTS!Lots of loss, lots of gruesome scenes, very descriptive...If you enjoy a good zombie book, gore and like new twist on the genera then this book is definitely for you.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Disappointed By Steven Lewis So I read all three books, hoping they would get better but was disappointed. I enjoy the Zombie Apocalypse type books but I just never could get over some of the unbelievable stretches the author makes in this series. The main character is a complete slacker who spends his time drinking, smoking and playing video games pre Zombie, yet in no time is constantly running, can shoot a pistol and hit his target because of his video game practice and never seems to eat, drink or sleep (or at least rarely). Please. Guys like this would die the first day, not become near super heroes. Having lived in the UK for 8 years myself, I was looking forward to more of a sense of what surviving in the UK would be like. References to Walkers crisps, Sainesburys, etc. Cant remember the characters even entering a grocery store. Oh well, I tried to like the series but in the end I am not left looking for more.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Hook Line Sinker By Amazon Customer Hayden McCall has become the one you want to cling to when the dead come knocking (and biting). From being one who needed saving and protection, to becoming a fighter is a road none of which he chose. Mr. Casey is a gold medalist with a pen. I just finished 3, my stomach was tight, my toes are uncurling, and I need book 4 now.

The true account of the life of 485 New Zealand Spitfire Squadron sergeant pilot from South Auckland, who in the words of fellow Ww2 fighter pilot Johnnie Houlton,, was a happy-go-lucky type, with a gift for getting himself into trouble without even trying. In the words of another friend and pilot, Max Collett, he was as mad as a March hare. . .! As an average young colonial lad exemplifying exuberance in youth, the author's namesake, Clinton McInnes, would challenge his father in stepping up to the challenges and hardships of the war, and ultimately life itself . . . He would achieve his aspiration and dream of flying for his hoped for squadron, along with finally being awarded Pilot Officer status. In living his young life to the full he would discover friendship and his love in family, to leave his mark for posterity. In so doing he would unwittingly prove Pilot Officer Prune's contention that apples, if they were our genes, do not fall far from their tree.

This volume is a systematic critique of the anti-Jewishness of the New Testament. Its primary purpose is to delineate what the New Testament authors intended to convey to their respective audiences concerning the Jewish people. That is, this volume is concerned with the initial meaning intended by the New Testament authors and how this intended meaning directly and with forethought contributed to Christian anti-Judaic1 thought and action. We will investigate how and why the New Testament authors created this anti-Judaic climate. Analysis of the Gospel stories demonstrates that anti-Judaism is woven into the fabric of a significant part of the New Testament narrative. This narrative has provoked bitter condemnation and persecution of Jews. The Jewish people were cast in the role of a dark satanic force as a systematic denigration and demonization of the Jews took place. It is to its harsh and bitter polemic against the entire Jewish people that one must ascribe the accusations of the Jews being Christ-killers and children of Satan and the later embellishments of Jews as host desecrators, ritual murders, and well-poisoners. Post-New Testament developments of Christian anti-Judaism are not central to this study. In pursuing our investigation we will make a distinction between what was originally intended by the New Testament authors and the usage made of their works to meet the anti-Judaic needs of the subsequent church.

Conclusions reached by later interpreters that have often been attributed to the authors of the Gospels are not our primary concern. It is not a question of how, or to what extent, the New Testament passages concerning Jews and Judaism were misused or misread in later centuries, but of what they were meant to mean in the first place. Thus, our focus will be on what the authors meant to convey to their respective contemporary audiences about the Jews.

What would the New Testament’s audience have understood from the information its various authors provided? What meaning would a reader derive from a particular text? Is the New Testament anti-Jewish or is it merely an accurate report of events as they took place? Answers can only come through an examination of the relevant passages in their specific literary contexts, as well as in the context of the struggles, aspirations, and theologies of the early church. Special attention must be paid to the relationship between the church and the Roman authorities, on the one hand, and the synagogue, on the other hand, at the time the various books of the New Testament were written and to polemics within the early church community.

The New Testament was not written solely to condemn the Jews. But, in the process of developing the several story lines that evolved into the four respective canonical Gospels, the early church adopted a decidedly anti-Judaic stance. Consequently, in its final form, instances of anti-Judaic sentiment are found in much of the New Testament, the Gospels in particular. This animosity has to do as much with politics as with theological doctrine, relations with the Roman imperial authorities as with displacing Jews and Judaism. If pre-Gospel traditions already included anti-Judaic elements, they were now systematically exploited. There was a growing need to explain why Israel, God’s chosen people, had rejected Jesus and the message of his disciples. How could this be reconciled with God’s will? In presenting Jesus as the Messiah and Christianity as superseding Judaism, Paul and the authors of the Gospels and Acts, in particular, indict the Jewish people for the death of Jesus and spread antipathy of Jews and Judaism as part of a program to achieve Christian ascendancy. The historicized core myths that provide the basis for the New Testament missionary program were shaped and reshaped to show that the church possessed full authenticity and validity contra Jews and Judaism.

Martin Jr. For the uninformed or ill-informed, this is a well thought out succinct breakdown of how the New Testament (NT) from its foundation was set up to have antisemitic tendencies. As Paul was not able to convert Jews during this period (100 years after the supposed events of the NT), he had to turn to the Hellenistic gentiles and mixed in Hellenistic death stories that those of the period would have understood. This isn't an anti-Christianity book, but a break down based upon the Tanakh and shows how in order to be taken "seriously" Christianity had to break with the Torah and in essence invalidate their (Christianity's) position.

I think a better title is "Anti-Judaism in the English New Testament Translation." When looking at the original text Gerald Sigal will not find any Anti-Judaism. There are points in translation where the most accurate word was assembly but the translators chose Church if the text was positive and Synagoge if it was negative. There was, on the translators' part, a clear bias against Jewish life and culture contrary to Ephesians 2. When Christians understand Jewish culture and Hebrew language, all the texts in Bible will open up like a fragrant rose, as if one is using mental olfactory senses for the first time.

THE critic's first duty in the presence of an author's collective works is to seek out some key to his method, some utterance of his literary convictions, some indication of his ruling theory. The amount of labour involved in an inquiry of this kind will depend very much upon the author. In some cases the critic will find express declarations; in other cases he will have to content himself with conscientious inductions. In a writer so fond of digressions as George Eliot, he has reason to expect that broad evidences of artistic faith will not be wanting. He finds in Adam Bede the following passage:—

Very quotable, very intelligent and ultimately too rich By Phred I think it was Christopher, the first to post an Amazon review of this the Kindle Edition of Views and who brought it to my attention. I got it on the theory that much of Henry James can be too densely written for my taste, but that I wanted something by him I could finish. This taste has whetted my appetite, and has confirmed my cautions. This short selection of reviews by James provided me with more quotable material in fewer pages than any writer this side of Shakespeare. By the end I was fighting my way through needlessly convoluted sentence structure and a notion that Henry James really like to hear himself. In an early selection he describes a writer as: "not offensively clever" a wonderfully clever turn of phrase. He has little good to say of Walt Whitman saying of him: " He tell us in the lines quoted that the words of his book are nothing. To our perception they are everything and very little at that." Nicely written burn. What exactly are we to make of:" ...the critics taking notes as we may in the interests of truth, George Elliot belongs in that class of pre-eminent writers in relation to whom the imagination comes to self-consciousness only to find itself in subjugation." Say Whaa? For at least 2/3 of this brief selection I was in a state of astonishment that Henry James could use such a vast vocabulary with such precision. And then... and then. James will often scold a writer for phrases that "Smell too much of the candle?" a lovely way to describe an obviously forced but intended to be casually remark. Yet James's reputation is that he would labor over his texts only slightly more than he expected of his reader.I will be reconsidering writers such as Kipling, given the adulation he receives in this collection. I am all the more leery that Henry James can write with too much smell of the candle. Further he can be complex for no obvious reason except to fill more space on the way to making a point.

Each review is preceded by its original publication date.George Eliot's poetry? Tennyson's dramas? An outright pan of Walt Whitman, and OUR MUTUAL FRIEND? Are the reviews Henry James wrote in the 1870s and 1880s worth reading today?Consider this, on the essays of Swinburne:Mr. Swinburne is a dozen times too verbose; at least one-half of his phrases are what the French call phrases in the air. One-half of his sentence is always a repetition, for mere fancy's sake and nothing more, of the meaning of the other half—a play upon its words, an echo, a reflection, a duplication. This trick, of course, makes a writer formidably prolix. What we have called the absence of the moral sense of the writer of these essays is, however, their most disagreeable feature. By this we do not mean that Mr. Swinburne is not didactic, nor edifying, nor devoted to pleading the cause of virtue. We mean simply that his moral plummet does not sink at all, and that when he pretends to drop it he is simply dabbling in the relatively very shallow pool of the picturesque.Henry James liked metaphors and similes. Some of those he comes up with are very striking:Our Mutual Friend is, to our perception, the poorest of Mr. Dickens's works. And it is poor with the poverty not of momentary embarrassment, but of permanent exhaustion. It is wanting in inspiration. For the last ten years it has seemed to us that Mr. Dickens has been unmistakeably forcing himself. Bleak House was forced; Little Dorrit was laboured; the present work is dug out as with a spade and pickaxe. As I look over my highlights, I find this general statement on the value of criticism, which holds as true today as it did in the 1870s:"... The tendencies of our civilisation are certainly not such as foster a preponderance of morbid speculation. Our national genius inclines yearly more and more to resolve itself into a vast machine for sifting, in all things, the wheat from the chaff. American society is so shrewd, that we may safely allow it to make application of the truths of the study. Only let us keep it supplied with the truths of the study, and not with the half-truths of the forum. Let criticism take the stream of truth at its source, and then practice can take it half-way down. When criticism takes it half-way down, practice will come poorly off."

White Knuckle, by Eric Red

Review "Eric Red is the successor to Richard Matheson and Robert Bloch. And he proves it once again here in WHITE KNUCKLE with a "road" story that is every bit as memorable as Matheson's DUEL. Partly horror with a psycho on the loose, partly police procedural, it's a taut suspense story, and a welcome return to the road horror story by the man who defined this genre with his screenplays NEAR DARK and HITCHER. There is no padding in the story, the pacing moves as relentlessly as White Knuckle's black Kenworth truck. Literally, no filler - all killer."  - Robin Pierce, Starburst Magazine. (9/10 stars)"The character of White Knuckle himself is one of the most gruesome and terrifying ever imagined. Like Thomas Harris did in THE SILENCE OF THE LAMBS, Red demonstrates that the scariest monsters are flesh-and-blood humans we might see on any given day, with an altogether different attitude about the value of life. Eric Red is an author to discover and enjoy, and WHITE KNUCKLE is highly recommended for those who prefer their horror with a huge dose of reality. But avoid reading it before taking a road trip, unless you're prepared to alter your route before hitting the road." - Bookgasm."Absolutely compelling reading...While WHITE KNUCKLE is punctuated by brutal violence and high action, it's really powered by its characters. FBI Agent Sharon Ormsby is an effective protagonist that really comes to life, a strong and smart woman with a real life and a past that she will have to confront. The action of the story rests on her able shoulders...You can't be sure what the future has in store for any character, and you can't get comfortable with anything or take anyone's fate for granted." - Tim Potter, The Horror Review."Rip-roaring, knuckle-biting, constantly suspenseful adventure in this riveting mystery thriller by the author of IT WAITS BELOW, WHITE KNUCKLE pits a probationary FBI Special Agent with a sad background and finely tuned intuition against a human monster--a long hauler trucker who began killing and torturing animals at age six and who has slaughtered women and girls in interstate rampages for four decades. Rife with high-octane tension, WHITE KNUCKLE is a Don t Miss, but don't read while traveling the highways, or sleeping alone." - Mallory Heart Reviews (Five star review)"Red's prose is hammer down all the way. If you're looking for a good, solid read to wile away a few summer hours, WHITE KNUCKLE is certainly worth a look." - Cemetery Dance."WHITE KNUCKLE is a tautly gripping thriller that keeps you on edge throughout the entire cross-country trek. It's a heart-thudding thrill-ride that must be taken this summer." - Arrow In The Head at JoBlo.com."WHITE KNUCKLE is one mean mutha truck driver." - Jack Ketchum.

White Knuckle makes Rusty Nail from the Joy Ride films look like an altar boy. I would love to see a movie version of this thriller only if Eric Red would write the screenplay. Enthusiastically recommended.

A high-octane thrill ride packed with unspeakable horror By Frank Errington Review copyWith apologies to Eric Red, prior to getting this book from Samhain Horror, I knew nothing about his work. Turns out, Eric is an American screenwriter and director, best known for writing the horror films The Hitcher and Near Dark. And based on what I just read, he's a damn fine horror writer, as well. This is the way the story opens..."There's a killer on the road...He's a big rig truck driver who goes by the handle White Knuckle, and he's Jack the Ripper on eighteen wheels. For thirty years he has murdered hundreds of women in unimaginable ways, imprisoning them in a secret compartment in his truck, abducting them in one state and dumping their dead bodies across the country.Dedicated FBI agent Sharon Ormsby is on a mission to hunt down and stop White Knuckle. She goes undercover as a truck driver with a helpful long hauler named Rudy in a cross-country pursuit that will ultimately bring her face-to-face with White Knuckle in a pedal-to-the-metal, high-octane climax on a highway to Hell."If that doesn't pull you in, maybe you should be reading romance novels instead of horror.White Knuckle has plenty of action and the title character is one sick and twisted individual. The back story on the killer's childhood was absolutely chilling.Special Agent, Sharon Ormsby, is a wonderfully strong female character and White Knuckle has some of the most horrific scenes I've ever read. There were times I was actually cringing in my seat while reading this novel. It's that good.If you haven't been reading Eric Red, like me just a few days ago, do yourself a big favor and drop this book right on top of your TBR pile.White Knuckle is available now in Paperback and a variety of e-book formats from Samhain Horror.Strongly recommended.

Red is the master of all things scary By Amazon Customer When I learned that the man who wrote one of the best horror movies of all time--The Hitcher--also wrote books, I immediately bought White Knuckle. I'm always a sucker for a good serial killer story, and if there's anything I know about Eric Red, it's that the man is a master of all things scary.I wasn't disappointed. White Knuckle is tightly woven cat-and-mouse game between the killer and the young FBI agent. This has been done before, but what sets it apart is the age of the killer and the FBI agent's unusual approach to catching him. I've always been fascinated by truck driving, and you could tell Red had done his research--he weaves in a lot of information about life on the road in a skilful way that was never boring or heavy handed.Even the one thing I was sure I'd figured out from the beginning turned out to completely different than I suspected.I planned on giving this book four stars until I got to the end, which was surprisingly moving. Red managed to write an edge-of-your-seat thriller while still making me care deeply about some of the characters (one in particular). He more than earned these five stars.I'll definitely be reading more of his books.

The book has a selection of 186 of the most interesting arms in the Jaipur royal palace and discusses them as weapons in their social and historical context. The book breaks new ground in Indian arms scholarship and is also a very readable account that takes in Rajput, Mughal and British Indian history, anthropology and art history. The objects are stunning: swords belonging to the Mughal Emperors Jahangir, Shah Jahan and Aurangzeb; wonderful court daggers with hilts of carved rock crystal, jade, ivory and gilt steel; ferocious tribal arms; some remarkable historic firearms and beautiful painted shields, some of which were decorated in Japan for the Mughal court. There is even a device for extracting arrows from wounds with toe-curling ancient medical remedies. Most of these arms are from the reserve collections and published for the first time.Contents: Foreword by Princess Diya Kumari of Jaipur; Acknowledgements; Cataloguing terms; Introduction; Daggers; Katars; Swords; Children's Arms; Lances, Spears and Shields; Armour; Axes, Ankus, Chhadi and Maces; Bows and Arrows; Accoutrements; Guns and Pistols; Map; The Rulers of Amber - Jaipur; Endnotes; Glossary; Bibliography; Index.

About the Author Robert Elgood studied Islamic History at SOAS and has a DPhil from Oxford University in Indian Anthropology before working as a consultant on Indian and Islamic arms at Sotheby's in the early 1980s. He is a freelance consultant, lecturer and the author of a number of books which can be seen on his website www.robertelgood.co.uk In 2007 he was invited to catalogue the armory at Mehrangarh Fort, Jodhpur (Rajput Arms and Armour, in publication); and this Jaipur catalogue was a consequence of that research.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A Nice Read for the Museum Lovers, Virtual Visitors to Rajasthani/Indian Museums, and the Art Historians By Dr Anup K Das The Maharaja Sawai Man Singh II Museum, located at City Palace in Jaipur, Rajasthan, has a great collection of armors from the rulers of the Jaipur Royal Family. Personal weapons of the rulers such as Maharaja Sawai Man Singh II, Maharaja Sawai Ram Singh II, Maharaja Sawai Madho Singh II, etc. are part of the collection. In book titled "Arms & Armour: At the Jaipur Court, the Royal Collection" written by art historian Robert Elgood provides a descriptive account of most significant exhibits available in its collection, mostly in the gallery named Sileh Khana (Armoury) at City Palace Museum. To be precise, 186 exhibits are described in ten sections with their historical and artistic connotations and significance. The author describes each exhibit with a colored photo of the item, its basic metadata, description and comment. The book is structured into ten sections based on type of the weaponry namely, (i) Daggers (ii) Katars, (iii) Swords, (iv) Children's Arms, (v) Lances, Spears and Shields, (vi) Armour, (vii) Axes, Ankus, Chhadi, and Maces, (viii) Bows and Arrows, (ix) Accoutrements, and (x) Guns and Pistols. The exhibits belong to sixteenth to nineteenth centuries, which were manufactured in different parts of India. The book also contains an informative and insightful introduction written by the author, a genealogy of the Rulers of Amber-Jaipur, and a foreword written by Princes Diya Kumari of the Museum Trust. This book is co-produced by the Maharaja Sawai Man Singh II Museum Trust. This book is a nice read for the museum lovers, virtual and real visitors to Indian museums, antiquity collectors and the art historians.
