Representing the ultimate publication on the music photography of Anton Corbijn, one of the most important photographers and directors working today, this collection of images, many never before published, focuses on Corbijn's evolving fascination with the music industry, from the 1970s to the present day. Anton Corbijn's interest in music has been the engine of anillustrious decades-long career that has most recently involvedthe making of feature length films such as The American,A Most Wanted Man, and Life, due to be released in 2015.This gloriously illustrated, oversized book pays homage toCorbijn's obsession with rock and roll--an interest that has ledto lifelong friendships with Bono, Michael Stipe, Dave Gahan, and other iconic musicians. Looking back over four decades,it features hundreds of creative, offbeat images that Corbijnwas able to capture largely as a result of his close relationshipswith his subjects. Nearly every revered musician and band isrepresented in Corbijn's archives: Nick Cave to Nirvana, U2 toR.E.M., the Rolling Stones to Siouxie and the Banshees. Manyof the portraits are accompanied by their subjects' own takeon Corbijn's distinct style and approach. Also included hereare previously unpublished photos of the late Joe Cockerand the band Depeche Mode, who consider him an honorarymember. A fitting tribute to an innovative and deeplypassionate photographer, this book will rock fans of music andphotography.

Review "Shot on film, and most often in black and white, Corbijn's pictures have more in common with street and documentary photography. They feel raw and ad hoc and vérité and intimate."

—Vogue

"Corbijn is known for shooting very few frames and he poured through thousands of negatives gathered from 1972 to 2013 before identifying 300 for the book that accompanies an exhibition of 400 images, 1-2-3-4, on view through August 16, at the Fotomuseum Den Haag in the Netherlands." —C Magazine"The show and book include both widely known and unseen music photographs from the beginning of Corbijn's career up to today"

Corbijn's amazing access to rock gods and goddesses goes beyond the obvious and takes us on the road, down some alleyways and into hotel rooms and pretty much everywhere else so much so that we not only see the images, we taste, we smell we hear...Beautifully designed from cover to cover, everyone should own this book. Another hit from publisher Prestel.

Reyes The quality of the book is really good, in my opinion it should have been breakdown in such sections... like all Depeche on one section, then U2, Rolling Stones etc. Wasn't a Sex Pistols fan and there seem to be a lot of 'Rotten' pics in here but ain't bad how i wish it was'nt that many. But overall if you like Anton's body of work this is a book for you, it was printed in Belgium and that is why the quality of the pages are fantastic. Hey Amazon how about putting more protection on your packages my book was slightly dented during shipping, it wasn't that big of a deal but it could have been more worse.

Whether you are an Islamophobe, or a seeker of truth, this book is for you. If you’ve ever wondered about the truth behind so many of the issues that hit the headlines these days, then this book will fill in some of the gaps for you. Is there is a connection between Islam and violence? Why do Muslim women wear the veil? What exactly are the rights of Muslim women? And just what is this thing called Jihad? The answers come together to paint a vivid and accurate picture of what Muslims really believe. Skinner manages to convey all this in plain English that, despite the reference book context, comes from the heart – she deftly puts across the basic tenets of Islam while maintaining that crucial “personal touch” that keeps the reader involved and engaged. - P. Fontaine-Nikolov

By david Hogan I accept that it is a "fact" that the author is sincere in her beliefs and explanation of Islam, and I don't doubt her passion. However, to say that this book is about "Islam, the facts", well it does not measure up factually. It certainly does have some "facts" about Islam, but it is very far removed from being truelly objective and factual. Many of the "facts" presented are easily found to be misleading at best, or outright false if you research them (eg. Jacques Couteau did not convert to Islam). It is a "rose coloured glasses" view of Islam. It is mostly wishful thinking, romanticised propaganda, and personal opinion placed in ascendance over the literal meaning and word of the Quran, Hadith, and Sira and their frightening, unequivocal and often repeated statements of hatred, violence and intolerance for all of humanity that does not accept Islam. The author does quote the Quran, but she cherry picks the nice bits to support her beliefs that Islam is a kind and wise religion, and she mostly ignores the bulk of the Quranic teachings about how Allah, Mohamed and the faithful followers of Islam are required to treat all infidels. It is a very valuable book. It powerfully demonstrates how Muslims wishfully attribute positive characteristics to their religion and come to believe it is a moral, good, and kind religion, despite the true nature of what the Quran, Hadith and Sira actually teaches. I found it fascinating to see that the author has constructed a world view that allows her to genuinely believe that Islam is a kind, wise and moral religion, despite what the Quran, Hadith, and Sira teaches.

Kyle Patricia Skinner is not only an excellent writer, but also a convert to Islam. Like many converts, she is passionate in her love for and knowledge of her faith. Unlike many, she has the organizational and writing skills to convey not only her personal experience, but also her understanding of the history and practice of Islam on a highly personal, almost evangelical level. For non-Muslims of Christian background like me, this is a very useful little book which gives much needed perspective, and fills in many blanks left by the scholarly tomes of Islamic and MIddle-Eastern History( think Bernard Lewis), and the sensational media reports of violent Islamic political extremism. She's a little shaky on the history of early Christianity and the fall of the Ottoman Empire. but who cares. Her heart is in the right place and the reader cannot help but connect with and respect her intelligent, impassioned personal narrative.

Imagine if a Mormon missionary went insane on his mission. That’s A Danger to God Himself—a book with everything. Drama! Comedy! Sex! The God of the universe striking people dead! Mormon missionary/onetime hedonist Kenny Feller has realized that God isn’t about to give him an ounce of the miracle power he needs to succeed on his mission—as promised. What’s more, he’s concluded that, frankly, people aren’t worth the trouble. Then his new junior companion shows up—the wisecracking Jared Baserman—and immediately starts hearing heavenly voices and seeing fantastic visions. For Kenny, it is immediately clear that God has sent Jared to propel him into Mormon Manhood. But Kenny’s not the only person who takes note. Interests both virtuous and malevolent cozy up to Kenny and Jared, eager to make use of Jared’s gifting. At first, Kenny takes this as a sign that his perceptions of Jared are spot on. God is using Jared. But something’s not quite right. Specifically, why in the hell would God choose someone as slope-shouldered as Jared—someone so unreligious, so strange—to be a channel for His supernatural power? He doesn’t even read the Book of Mormon. Plus he smells funny. As their tracting grows fruitless and Jared’s messages grow more bizarre, Kenny begins to wonder: Is Jared really touched by God? What the #!%&! is God doing? A Danger to God Himself is a scathing takedown of religious certainty, a life-affirming tale set in 1970s Washington state—equal parts spiritual road map and coming-of-age tale.

For the first half, I could hardly put it down as the story line propelled me along.Where my interest began to slow was in the second half, where the story became fantastical to me. I think Draper's idea was to have the reader consider the absurdity of organized religion, its rituals and its beliefs about what constitutes a good life. I also think he was drawing a not-too-subtle alignment between dogmatic religious practice and mental health. If this was indeed Draper's goal in the story, he made his point, although somewhat awkwardly. Draper clearly did a lot of research on religion and mental health, and occasionally goes a little overboard to convince the reader that he knows his stuff. The afterward and Draper's blog (johndraper.com/blog) give a wonderful insight into his thinking, his life and the inspirations that created this fine first novel. And reading both helped me truly understand the novel and the novelist."A Danger to God Himself" got me thinking, which is a good thing. I recommend this novel and look forward to more from Draper. I hope his next book comes soon!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A Danger to God Himself By BigAl Sometimes when I sit down to write a review I have multiple directions or slants to go with my write-up. It's paralyzing, not knowing where to start. This is one of those times. As with anything too complicated to wrap your mind around at once, the best approach is to break it into pieces. So that's what I'll do here, starting with a focus on the basics of the characters and the story, moving into the religious aspects, and finishing off with my ruminations on the kind of reader who I think would be the most likely to enjoy A Danger to God Himself. I expect a lot of words will be spilled. The main characters are great. Kenny, a young adult (which we all know is still just a kid) who does what's expected of him, even if maybe he'd rather not. He's a type we've probably all seen, even if the situation is different. His missionary companion, Jared, is a strange duck, keeping the reader off balance, not sure what to make of him. In the beginning, he provides comic relief, but he also drives much of the story. The secondary characters are all well formed as well, each helping move the story forward. I especially liked Jared's dad and sister who were integral to the story and to gaining a complete understanding of Jared. Some of the characters are caricatures, not in the sense that they aren't well formed or are flat. More in that they may seem just a touch over the top, which is fitting for a story that is satirical. The story is satirical in a couple ways. One is that it satirizes religion, especially those who take what many consider to be myths containing lessons to help in living a good life and interpret them too literally. But on another level, Jared and everything that happens to him is a satire of Joseph Smith and the founding of the Mormon church.Which is a segue into the religious part. Those not familiar with Mormonism might wonder how much of the story is realistic. The answer is that while satirical, nothing here is out of the realm of possibility. In fact, Mormonism has a long history of spawning splinter groups that go way beyond the mainstream church. Even within the mainstream, the culture rewards followers and extremism while discouraging critical thinking or questioning of any kind. That last part is a clue of who this book isn't for. It's doubtful a devout Mormon has read this far unless it is one of my still-faithful sisters, wondering how far I've gone this time. This isn't the book for them. However, anyone without a problem with taking a critical look at religion, regardless of their personal beliefs, will find much to like. I'll end this with a quote from the book. If you read this and give a knowing nod, it is especially for you."Mormonism isn’t just a religion. It’s a way of being. Like alcoholism, I guess. Alcoholics say they never stop being alcoholics, don’t they? They’re always recovering alcoholics. Same thing with Mormonism. It’s a culture. If you’re born a Mormon, you’re always a Mormon—more so if you were actually raised in the church."**Originally written for "Books and Pals" book blog. May have received a free review copy. **

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. I loved this book By PNW Girl I loved this book! The characters and narrator have unique, vivid voices that caught me up and made reading this book so very satisfying. I was immediately sucked into the story and couldn’t wait to see what happened next. You see Jared slowly succumb to his psychological demons. This causes Kenny to transform from a shallow, self-centered young man who has never examined his life and faith into a caring man who sees the world in his own way, contrary to how he was taught to simply accept unquestioningly. You see him find love and the value of emotional intimacy, something completely unknown to him in the past. He questions and challenges, while looking for a sign of God’s existence – and ultimately finding something more real and vital to his existence. Definitely recommend this book.

Running and hiding is looked upon as a way out for the weak. It is something Omar never thought he would do. As a child, he didn’t even partake in the game of Hide and Seek for that very reason. Unfortunately, after being sentenced to death by his cousin, Demarcus, Omar was left with no choice. Moving to Detroit wasn't as bad as he thought it would be. It didn't take long for him to reign supreme. However, the change of location didn’t change the conniving and cold-hearted monster that he was inside. It didn't take the locals long to see the monster that was he. When his lies caught up to him and backed him in the corner, he opted to take the easy way out and leave. With Omar deciding to move back to Memphis after being off the radar for three years, he was now willing to play the game. He wanted it to end in his cousin’s murder, while reclaiming the throne he was kicked down from. But how many people would he be willing to kill to get back what he felt was rightfully his? Demarcus’s life has turned for the good. He has a relationship with his new found father, runs a large Dog Food distribution ring, and has a few legit businesses that are flourishing on the side. The sheltered mama’s boy has turned into a man. Suddenly, the bodies start piling up and he goes from being the most loved man in the city of Memphis, to being the number one murder suspect in every case that crosses the homicide unit desk. As the bodies pile up, his past is back to haunt him with a vengeance. But what happens when the true murderer is someone he already knows to be dead?

Dog Food 2 (Volume 2), by Raynesha Pittman

About the Author Raynesha Pittman is a prime example of the saying; What we come from does not dictate what we will go on to be. Raynesha grew up as one of Los Angeles's many troubled youth which led her into serving four years around L.A. juvenile corrections centers, placements, and camps. She first recognized her love for writing while incarcerated. She was an honors student since kindergarten, certified gifted in the third grade, and was sent to Woodland hills, CA for a more challenging education, yet she had to be placed in advance placement classes there too. She graduated high school a month after turning 16 years old and received acceptance letters to five out-of-state universities which she later declined offers to due to still being on probation until 18 years of age and not being able to leave the state. California State University at Los Angeles and Northridge accepted her last minute application with open arms. After attending school for a little over a semester she discovered she was pregnant and decided to put her role as a mother first. She moved to TN for a new start with her boys and received her PTCB national certification in July 2010 after 3 1/2 years of being a licensed Pharmacy technician. While juggling a full time job and raising her six children she wrote and published her debut novel Kismet, which went on to draw rave reviews and solidified her place as an up and coming writer to look out for. She ultimately signed with Write 2 Eat Concepts, with her first offering from the camp being the coming of age tale of a church boy gone bad titled Dog Food, which will be released in July 2014. Raynesha's titles also include: Kismet 1-2 (Beyond the Bedroom series), and Scratch a Liar Find a Thief: A short story in the anthology Traces of my Lipstick. Raynesha currently resides in Nashville, T.N. with her Husband and six children.

It seems like forever since we read Dog Food (part I), so of course the anticipation was high. What the heck was Demarcus going to get into this time?!?! I almost broke my kindle reading Part I, so I was praying that Demarcus got his life this time around. So I start reading the book...and everything is going good until Lord King and Killa start fighting in the back seat of the car. All I could think was oh crap here we go!!! Bullets shooting, they wrestling, bodies start flying out the car, and the entire time I'm thinking Lord this fool (Demarcus) about to go to jail. Think positive Tiffany, just think positive. He can't go to jail, this not his fault. Calm down and keep reading. Then it happens, "Demarcus Elder, you're under arrest for assaulting an off-duty officer, and you are the primary suspect in the murder of..." (did you really think I was going to tell that)? And there went the safety of my kindle. Seventeen percent in and I'm mad at this MF already. But don't get caught up on the mistakes of Demarcus, because Raynesha is bringing the HEAT and switching up the game in this book!Hands down...Dog Food II belongs to Omar! Omar kicked down the front door, he didn't take names, he didn't ask no questions...he just reeked havoc! Who knew Omar had it in him? I want to talk about Omar's gangsta but I can't because you wouldn't even believe me. I promise every time I read Omar's name I was humming Rich Homie Quan's song "I be feeling like the man when I walk thru.." Like this song was on repeat the entire time I was reading this book. Walk thru Omar - walk thru!!! LOL! Even though I don't want to give anything away...I have to say this...Omar will have you under his spell by sprinkling a little dog food on his manhood (you heard me), he will steal from you and then come back and make it rain on you. And as much as I didn't want to like him, I had to respect his ability to stay alive. My favorite part (well one of them)...let me set the scene. Omar needs some cookie, so he finds a flick of Demarcus and Bria and proceeds to watch it. So he getting his one hand man on, and one his many enemies appears out of nowhere and is standing over ready to empty his gun. Do you think Omar care? Well No! When L'Amir tells him to put his meat up, Omar responds with, "You invited yourself to this party. You're on my time." You talking about opening and closing this kindle and screaming every time I went back to read what I thought I hadn't really read. And this is one of the reasons why you have to respect Omar.I can't even begin to explain how good this book is. There was innocent people getting bodied, people going to jail (Demarcus stayed at the police station honey), set ups, take downs, paternity tests, secrets, lies, and love. And don't worry Demarcus will still keep you mad and guessing his next move. Raynesha deserves a standing ovation for building her own box and writing outside of it. She didn't go into this book to continue Part I, she went into this book to finish a family era or error (depends on how you look at it). And the way the books ends, Dog Food III might be the beginning of a new friendship for Demarcus, and we all know this busta don't need no new friends!!!~ Tiffany (556 Book Chicks)www.556bookchicks.blogspot.comFacebook Group: 556 Book ChicksTwitter: @556bookchicks

It was full of action as it bounced from Omar's POV to Dee's. The introduction of new characters mixed well with the ones they we all grew to love/hate from the first book. The prologue makes you raise a brow as you read the book trying to predict how it ties in, and when it does it still takes you for a loop. The author's writing style has grown from part one, and it shows through her prose. The book reads poetically, trapping you into the scenes, in the car on the road trips, at the parties, in the interrogation room, and eventually in a grave. I highly recommend this series to anyone looking for classic urban fiction.

The was he did Symphony and Bria was straight up wrong smh. I felt so bad for Demarcus is definitely my favorite character. Glad he got all the closure he needed. Was a lil surprised to find out about Omar and who he really was smh. Was so glad to see Demarcus and Joyce had taken things to the next level. I was hoping that it happened and even happier Demarcus got his son. This book deserves nothing less than five stars

From award-winning blues scholar and musician Adam Gussow, a taut, sexy first novel about the summer busking scene in Europe and a pair of wild-hearted young men who make a pitch for fame and glory, finding a girl or two along the way. Busker’s Holiday is the story of McKay Chernoff, a Columbia University grad student with a harmonica in his pocket and a blues band in his background. Desolate and despairing after a disastrous romantic breakup, McKay decides to fly off to Paris and reinvent himself as a street performer. What follows is an epic summer voyage into the busking life, propelled by the mad exploits of Billy Lee Grant, a fearless young guitar shredder whose Memphis-to-Mississippi pedigree and Dylanesque surrealism make him, when he explodes into view, precisely the partner McKay has been yearning for. Burning like a latter-day Dean Moriarty, Bill goads McKay into a sun-drenched, all-night bender, stoked by wine, women, mushrooms, and trains, that careens down out of Avignon and across the French Riviera. What happens next—in Florence, Solingen, Amsterdam, Paris—is a story of purgatory, redemption, and love regained. Hope, in a word, as a modern troubadour returns from his wanderings, reborn.

Busker's Holiday, by Adam Gussow

Review "...Gussow outdoes himself with the novel's revolving cast of unique characters, whose crazy times and back stories are endlessly entertaining.  The novel is about the trip of a lifetime, going to Europe to forget everything, but it's also a story of friendship, helped tremendously by Gussow's ear for music and dialogue.  A strongly written, cool novel about being young, bluesy, and free on a vagabond adventure in Europe."--Kirkus Reviews"Gussow takes you on an unforgettable trip filled with colorful characters, raging hormones, sexual tension, young men's Sturm und Drang, music, and more music....As a European who was himself a busker in the streets, alleys and market squares in Europe in the 1970s, this reviewer was fascinated by the vividly accurate and realistic settings, drenched in rich descriptions of scene and place. Considering that Gussow's real life Euro-busking experience was 30 years ago, his recollection details of place and time, and, most importantly, the feelings of the experience that he manages to convey, are simply remarkable."--Frank Matheis, TheCountryBlues.com"Busker's Holiday is strung between espressos and bluesy harmonica poetry, a linguistic tour-de-force dancing like rain drops on the Paris streets."-- Paul Maher, Jr., author of Kerouac: The Definitive Biography"A rocking guttersnipe's lament across Europe, one that stings and swings.  A lively coming-of-age tale inspired by Kerouac and Magic Dick."--R. J. Smith, author of The One:  The Life and Music of James Brown.

About the Author Adam Gussow is an associate professor of English and Southern Studies at the University of Mississippi and a professional blues harmonica player and teacher. He is the author of three books on the blues, including Mister Satan's Apprentice: A Blues Memoir, the story of his experience as a Harlem street musician.

Set back in 1984, a time before the web, before cell phones, before e-mail, two grad students fly from NYC to backpack through Europe. McKay Chernoff, the protagonist, sets off to heal a broken heart, and his buddy, Paul Goldberg, well, he's off to get some relief from studying ancient texts. But what makes this book so fascinating is that McKay is a blues musician who discovers the joys of busking in Paris, Avignon, and other cities. Gussow's descriptions of what it's like to lose yourself in the blues, and the many characters he plays with along the way, will have older readers wondering why they put their guitars down. Younger readers, one hopes, will pick up the guitar and the harmonica, and both will rediscover Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, and the great, great Magic Dick. Gussow's writing combines wild, ecstatic scenes with incredible precision. And he is a poet of considerable skill. At strategic points, he drops in powerful lyrics on Florence, sex, and getting fed up with always writing about the women who leave him. This is a book that brilliantly describes what it's like to be wandering through Europe without a care in the world other than tending to one's amours and harmonicas. Strongly, strongly recommended.

Welsh For anyone who was in their early 20's in the late 60's, early 70's will be able to relate to this even if they didn't make it to Europe. Since there was such a large part of that generation that was seeking freedom and many traveled all over the country and the majority of them would go from one music festival to the next one for the music and drugs were all they craved.Adam is a fantastic musician and a really down to earth type of guy who is very intelligent. However he uses all the above to really bring to life what it was like traveling through different countries where there was a very large amount of people from all over the world doing the same thing. That thing was to explore the different countries and meet the people while trying to earn some money by playing music with several different people he meets up with. It's really funny the way he explains some of the characters and places using what I would call, intelligent wit. You may not understand some of the words he uses to explain who or what he is talking about....but you can still find the humor behind it all. It's a great book and it was fun reading it even when I didn't really understand some of the language or vocabulary. Great job."KOH"Joey B

By Heath Mensher Itzhak Perlman said, “The drama of silence between notes is important.” In “Busker’s Holiday,” what is left unsaid is often just as powerful as the author’s deft turns of phrase. Within the pages hides friendship, freedom, libertine excesses, and an innocence forever lost to us. Gussow whisks us along on a journey for the ages, and we happily come along because, simply, we want to be this cool. Fast as hell and a riot of sights and sounds, there is a warmth here which only comes from the expert manipulation of the language. An excellent read!

From how to play your first note to mastering advanced concert pieces, Universal Method for Saxophone offers exercises and advice for every stage of learning, making it both an excellent guide for the saxophonist's musical journey and an indispensable tool for instructors.

DeVille's work covers everything a dedicated saxophone student needs to learn to develop mastery. As the accomplished saxophonist and author Sam Sadigursky wrote in his review of the top saxophone books of all time (in which he rated Universal Method for Saxophone the number one choice),

"If you look at the first 20 pages of this 320-page book, it appears to be for beginners, but it quickly moves into some of the best technical and musical workouts that exist in any book. There are etudes by countless composers, slow pieces to develop sound and phrasing, short technical exercises that target the thorny parts of the saxophone mechanism, classical arias, pieces in all twelve keys, and rhythmic and articulation exercises."

Universal Method for Saxophone has served generations of saxophone players-including some of the greats-well, and it will continue to be relied upon long into the future. Find out why it sets the standard for saxophone education.

Step by step method for learning to play the saxophone By A Customer Over the years many thousands of saxophone players, great and small, have learned to play using this book. The book is a comprehensive guide to playing the saxophone. It begins with how to put a saxophone together and how to play your first note and ends with some very sophisticated excercises. Anyone who begins on page one and follows the excercises through to the last page will be a proficient musician. If you just want to learn a couple of tunes to impress your friends, this may not be the right book for you. If you, however, really want to learn to play the saxophone, this is the only book.

Great for someone who is really willing to put in the extra time and effort. This isn't a book to just flip through. It is really worth taking the time to get into this book and truly study the art of playing the sax.

Anyone who aspires to play the sax should have a copy, even if it is "old school" by today's standards. This and a couple of "cheat books", with a good album collection, is all you need to learn to play the right way. Join a band and listen to everyone else, and hit a few licks when the time is right.

By Matthew Rapaport Loved the content, but Kindle format for this book (like his "Philosophy of Space and Time") is terrible! When Einstein formulated the general theory of relativity, he transformed gravity into geometry. That was but one of the big insights of relativity, but it is the one that most matters here. In the few decades following GR's 1915 debut (Eddington wrote this in 1920) a number of physicists (Eddington among them) thought that if gravity can be mapped to geometry, perhaps the electro-magnetic force could be also? These were the first attempts at a "unified theory" of all physical forces, and in this book, Eddington explicates his particular version of it. In the end, the attempts all failed, but the literature is valuable none-the-less. Eddington is a very good writer and his explanation of the relation between gravity and space-time curvature is worth the read. That's the good news. The bad news is that this Kindle edition is very poorly constructed. There is some math here, but it is impossible to follow any of it (even if you are otherwise qualified to do so) because every special mathematical symbol used in logic and physics has been mis-transformed. Even pi, not to mention any super or sub-script, integration and summation symbols, etc. In short, every single symbol is scrambled into ordinary characters and thereby rendered unreadable. I assume the physical copies are all ok in this regard, but the Kindle version came out horribly!Even if you just want to see what the man has to say and would ignore the math anyway, there is some effort to be made. For example there is no separation between pages and their end notes (of which there are plenty). The notes end up falling in the middle of the page looking like ordinary paragraphs. Luckily they can be spotted thanks to a preceding '*' and you learn to read these and then, in the next line, continue with the previous text. All in all I found Dr. Eddington's style an enjoyable read, but the formatting issues make the Kindle version a bit problematic.

Great learning from one of the greatest of modern astronome By Raghuram Krishnaswamy First off, this is the guy who made the famous remark when he was asked "Is it true you are among the three people who understand relativity" and he responded, "I wonder who is the third!". The Astronomer Royal, Eddington was counted on as a very good mathematician by even mathematicians (Hardy for instance) and an even better physicist. He was embroiled (now legend) with Chandrasekhar in the thirties on the quantum mechanics of dying stars. Chandra worked extensively with Eddington and described his writing style in glowing terms. When he writes, you don't get the feeling of pomp in his style, considering his stature. On the contrary his style is very engaging and leaves you impressed! His mathematical treatment to the relativity is even more accessible!Fantastic Book!!!!

The first lay classic on general relativity By W Kowalsky One of the most famous astronomers of the 20th century, Arthur Eddington, was so enamored by Einstein's theory of gravitation that he took up the crusade by measuring the deflection of starlight by the sun and thus was the first experimentalist to verify a vital part of the theory. He believed Einstein's creation to be a beautiful geometrical theory which should be at least qualitatively understood by everyone. The result of this belief was "Space, Time and Gravitation" which was written for the intelligent educated lay person. The book is well written and insightful and I heartily recommend it.

“Once upon a time on a baby blue planet where everything was just right, a few mischievous men decided to find out how much carbon dioxide they could send up into the atmosphere before the planet got overcooked and teeming with tornadoes, hurricanes, floods, droughts, and forest fires popping up all over. Flocks of nice people, upset with how their baby blue planet was being messed with, marched and carried signs until these pranksters got so ashamed they quit playing with carbon dioxide. The planet cooled back down and calmed back down and we all lived happily ever after”. We all know it’s not at all that simple, but it seems as though our actions are inspired by that fairy tale. In “Global Warming Navigation”, author Ed Prell addresses a readership that is fully aware of the threat posed by greenhouse gas emissions and the need to curtail them drastically. He proceeds to sketch a near future in which determined players must team up and use every ethical tool available to stop greenhouse gas emission. But inescapably linked with this curtailment are unprecedented, enormous consequences that must be acknowledged and acted upon. How can we ensure that a kilowatt-hour of clean energy will be on tap to replace each thwarted kilowatt-hour of fossil-produced energy? What will become of our electrical grids, which are designed to deliver power from large power plants to millions of customers? How can we make the changeover from gasoline and diesel to battery power for our vehicles? How do we cope with the abrupt decline of the principal operations of the largest business sector in the world? What about the international financial markets? What of the millions of pensioners, shareholders, employees, and smaller businesses that depend on the continued profitable operation of the fossil fuel corporations? Can we or should we explore means to mitigate the climate damage without halting the use of fossil fuels? Should populations in tornado alleys and low-lying seacoasts rebuild or abandon their communities? How long will it take to get our old climate back once we mend our ways? These are the sort of questions we must be asking now, notes Prell. But they, and the answers they demand, will not originate in the public discourse. They will need to emerge from within the ranks of hundreds of activist organizations, governments across the globe, and even from those large corporations and their stakeholders. Lamentably, the public, beset by a myriad of worrying issues, has been locked into a debate about the very existence of Global Warming by a well-oiled disinformation apparatus. Why bother making plans to heal our planet if we can’t decide whether it’s been injured? This impasse must be broken. The essay suggests that the market, rather than bureaucratic wrangling, is the surest way out. Once the cost of zero-emission energy beats out the dead-end fossil-derived energy, the Global Warming debate becomes moot. This cross-over point is inevitably approaching, and hastening its arrival must be given a high priority. Providing zero-emission energy with deserved assistance and compelling the fossil industries to pay their externalized costs are the means to reaching this intermediate goal. Simply put, the best way to snuff out GHG-emitting fossil energy is to replace it with a superior alternative. Then, the clean energy infrastructure that is being started up now must pick up the load and carry us through the decades-long process of transforming our lives. But, that’s not all. The well-deserved collapse of fossil-derived energy will leave in its wake millions of innocent victims who have been depending on their financial stability. An equitable safety net must be rigged to break their fall. The way forward through this man-created mess is demanding and complex. There is no other option. We must shed time-worn assumptions and attitudes, and punch through to a better tomorrow.

Whitis With an engineer's attention to detail, the author presents a broad ranging view of the global climate changes affecting all of us from the air we breathe to the water we drink. His purpose in presenting this information is to get us past the awareness to the point of action. With this slender volume, he joins Helen Caldicott, Naomi Klein, Naomi Orestes, Elizabeth Colbert, Bill McKibben and others in making sense of the virtual tsunami of data. The annotated bibliography is especially helpful.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Five Stars By C. Burns Passionate, thorough, highly researched and well documented of evidence behind global warming. If ever there was a doubt as to the existence to the dilemma, Mr. Prell's argumentation will quickly dispel the myth. Undeniable causal relationships, with abundance of direct examples make for a densely packed, albeit cerebral read. Touches of whimsical satire make it entertaining. Worth the read. Gives pause to choices made in consumption, investing....thinking globally, yet acting locally, environmental stewardship consistent with social progress movement of 1960s. Intellectual passion behind the cause compelling and contagious.

One of the most dynamic eras in American history, the 1920s began with a watershed year that would set the tone for the century to follow.

The Roaring Twenties is the only decade in American history with a widely applied nickname, and our collective fascination with this era continues. But how did this surge of innovation and cultural milestones emerge out of the ashes of World War I?

Acclaimed author Eric Burns investigates the year 1920, which was not only a crucial 12-month period of its own but one that foretold the future. The year 1920 foreshadowed the rest of the 20th century and the early years of the 21st, whether it was Sacco and Vanzetti or the stock market crash that brought this era to a close.

Burns sets the record straight about this most misunderstood and iconic of periods. Despite being the first full year of armistice, 1920 was not a peaceful period - it contained the greatest act of terrorism in American history to that time. And while 1920 is thought of as the beginning of a prosperous era, for most people life had never been more unaffordable. Meanwhile, African Americans were putting their stamp on culture. And though people today imagine the frivolous image of the flapper dancing the night away, the truth was that a new kind of power had been bestowed on women, and it had nothing to do with the dance floor.

From prohibition to immigration, the birth of jazz, the rise of expatriate literature, and the original Ponzi scheme, 1920 was truly a year like no other.

It was a dividing point between the end of the Great War and what seemed like a new generation of artists, musicians, political and societal radicals. It was also the year that one physically feeble president - Woodrow Wilson - left office and was replaced by another man - Warren Harding, who was intellectually and morally feeble. But all sorts of people and events came together to make the year 1920 a surprisingly interesting one.American author Eric Burns examines the year 1920 in his new social history, "1920: The Year that Made the Decade Roar". Though mainly looking at the year in the United States, he devotes a bit of time to other countries, too. He starts his book by recounting a shocking event on September 16, 1920 when a horse and cart, filled with explosives, was seen sitting on Wall Street in NYC, in front of the JP Morgan bank. At about noon, the cart exploded, and 38 people (and the horse) were blown to kingdom come. Scores more were injured. Who planted the bomb? Burns takes that terrorist attack - certainly a continuation of several bombings in 1919, if not by the same groups - and unfolds the story of the past few years and moves into the next few. But 1920 was the "fulcrum" year.Women got the vote in 1920 with the passing of the 19th Amendment, while alcoholic drinking was legally prohibited the same year. The 18th Amendment - or the Volstead Act - may have "legally" stopped the production (and governmental taxation) of liquor, but it sure didn't stop the illegal consumption of the "hooch" and other homemade alcoholic products. Thousands died consuming the stuff in the 13 years of Prohibition. In the end, of course, the lack of legal revenue from taxation and the realisation that prohibiting liquor was in no way going to stop the demand of it.These events and people are just a few Eric Burns writes about in his lively book. It's a great book for readers who want to put the pieces of the times together.

The former endured and arguably changed the course of US politics; the latter was possibly the most ignored law in our history. But Burns points out that, in general, though Prohibition is often portrayed in a sardonic light, it very likely saved many lives (“fewer cases of cirrhosis of the liver”) and helped large numbers of American to lead more productive lives (“college administrators found their students to be more sober”).The country was in the grip of smaller, but no less portentous, issues, notably the first major act of foreign terrorism on American soil: the bombing on Wall Street. Burns follows the investigation of this outrageous action through the year, and though the specific perpetrators were never identified, signs pointed to Italian anarchists, certainly of an anti-capitalist and possibly communist strain. There were even suspicions that the Ku Klux Klan might have been involved, because it did have an active policy of creating terror, and was known as anti-immigrant and anti-government.An obscure conman who went by the name of Ponzi was inventing a new kind of crime that would bear his name. African American men were finding that fighting for the country on foreign soil gained them nothing back home, and farm boys were learning that factory work was at least as hard as ploughing and money didn't grow on the few trees in America's increasingly crowded cities. By 1920, President Woodrow Wilson was in seclusion, and in a very real sense, the country was being run by his wife, Ellen; this at a time when the issue of women’s rights was generating its own sparks. The very controversial Margaret Sanger (she advocated, among other causes, the policy of eugenics) was exhorting women to take control of their destinies; she spoke openly about contraception --- and the flappers got the message. Flappers were also smoking cigarettes (lots of them), a flagrantly antisocial and sexually charged behavior that, along with flesh-colored stockings, short skirts and a provocative way of moving on the dance floor, made these young restless women a symbol of the decade.1920 also saw the ascension of some of the century’s greatest artists, the names evoking the passions and growing pains of the decade: Louis Armstrong, Eugene O’Neill, F. Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald (“embodiments of the wild side of the era”), Bessie Smith, D H Lawrence and Paul Robeson. Sinclair Lewis dared to poke holes in the myth of the American small town with his hyperbolic MAIN STREET, and the Harlem Renaissance brought out the best of African American music and word craft. Jazz, free verse and the "lost generation" were born. The “talking box” brought it all home to Americans, along with the news, making trends impossible to ignore and easy to follow.1920 is a roaring read, a thorough and thoughtful appraisal of a single year in our past and all its implications for our future.Reviewed by Barbara Bamberger Scott

The author has to relates events in the years before 1920 and events after 1920. However, the author is a very good story teller so that the narrative is very readable. The book would be more meaningful if the author had also talked about the downturn in the economy and the demobilization of the military. Still, anyone interested in the 1920's will find this book to be a good introduction.

Twelve-year-old Pamela Manchester is an autistic savant whose reputation for amazing feats of memory and perception is quickly spreading. Large crowds flock to her live performances. YouTube and Facebook fame are gaining momentum. Back home in rural Minnesota, however, the girl has different priorities altogether. If not for her ambitious father, managing her "career," she would be happy just repeating her forest routines, learning esoteric facts about nature, and playing Minecraft on her Kindle. The more he tries to control her, the more she fights back. This battle of wills seems hopeless until a family of Sasquatch gradually makes its presence known, changing everything—for better and for worse. ___________________________________________________________ Christopher Noël is the author of two previous novels and the acclaimed memoir IN THE UNLIKELY EVENT OF A WATER LANDING. He is also a Sasquatch researcher currently exploring strong links between the nature of this primate species and that of autistic savants. His Sasquatch Savant Theory is described in THE MIND OF SASQUATCH and THE MIND OF SASQUATCH II.

Christopher Noel’s book is fast paced, well constructed, expertly written, and ever intriguing. His characters possess that essential quality of verisimilitude that draws us to them at once in their human creatureliness whether we like them or not. What I love about this book is it’s boldly compassionate presentation of an autistic child, Pam, who enters freely into the world of a sasquatch family. Pam remains with the family when they are pursued and persecuted by human curiosity and greed. Her encyclopedic knowledge of nature to which she retreats when she is threatened is a moving reminder to us of the “interconnected web of all existence.” The Girl Who Spoke With Giants is a great read, innovative and colorful in its treatment of autism as a possible trait in common with our possibly surviving forebears.

The story is told as an alternating narrative between a father and his autistic daughter, and it is easy to follow and comprehend. I had read "The Mind of Sasquatch: And the Secret to Their Success (a theory)" prior to beginning this book, and I do believe the relationship between Pam and her "adopted" family resonated more because of that earlier exposure to some of the concepts.

I loved every minute, did not have to proof read or edit (always on auto pilot), nothing but pure reading pleasure. I respect Christopher Noel as a researcher, so expected good writing, this story was beautifully put together. It is just long enough to savor and enjoy thoroughly. Thank you.

Vultures circling over the Yucatán scrubland lead vacationing Ben Candidi (Ph.D.) to an ugly sight--a young peasant with his heart cut out, draped over a boulder. Rebecca Levis (M.D.) recognizes the peasant as B'alam Chuc, an engineering student at the university in Mérida. He had been interested in her medical outreach project. Although handwritten hieroglyphs found on the body offer clues, the police insist the motive was robbery. The parents--Maya villagers who speak no Spanish--have their eight-year-old Ichik ask Ben to investigate. B'alam's professors describe him as a brilliant student but a loner. Armed with a glyph dictionary and a cultural tourist's knowledge of Mayan history, rites and superstition, Ben searches for what lured B'alam to the scene of his death. He assembles clues from haciendas, Maya villages, archeological sites and even the coral bedrock. As the picture of an evil and debauched criminal conspiracy emerges, Ben and Rebecca are faced with two questions: Was B'alam truly innocent? And is it time to get out of Yucatán?

Review From traces of Mayan glyphs, wisps of their history and mythology, and from the fiber of their present-day culture, Dirk Wyle has spun an incredible yarn. --prepublication endorsement by Steve Glassman, author of Cities of the Maya in Seven Epochs, 1250 B.C. to A.D. 1903

About the Author DIRK WYLE is the pen name of Duncan H. Haynes, Ph.D., a 30-year veteran of biomedical science. Commercial success of his drug microencapsulation technology enabled an early retirement from the laboratory and medical school lecture hall, allowing him to focus on his passion for literature. Believing there are no stone walls separating the realms of popular science, serious literature and mystery/thriller fiction, Dirk Wyle creates exciting but realistic stories that play out in all three arenas.Dirk does not regard work and play as necessarily separate activities. Scientific reading and travel to exotic locations inspire new stories.

Konicek What do you get when your author is a well travelled, scientist writing a mystery about a mystery-solving scientist? You get a book that is authentic, gripping and full of cultural nuances. Yucatan is Murder is a page turner and Ben Candidi (PhD) and his paramour Rebecca Levis (MD) encounter ultimate challenges with their combined genius and charm. This is a must read for mystery fans. What is really appealing about the book is the author's knowledge about the area and history in which the novel take place. This is an incredible yarn.

An Exciting Mayan Murder Mystery By Amazon Customer Yucatan is Murder combines an exciting Mayan murder mystery with elements of travelogue, scientific research, history and genuine nerdism. It is a very well put together journey through the cenotes of the Yucatan peninsula on the trail of a mysterious murderer. Who killed and mutilated the young college student and why was he found with glyphs in his pocket? What were the police trying to cover up? What happened to the Scottish hydrologist? This book is a great read - don't miss it!

By CHASIDY RUSH If you like a good mystery then you'll love this book!Yucatán Is Murder, sixth in the Ben Candidi Mystery series, is a hard-boiled science-driven mystery-thriller set in Mexico and featuring science- and tech-savvy amateur sleuths. In the coastal scrubland of Yucatán, Mexico, circling vultures lead vacationing scientist, Ben Candidi, to a corpse. As in an ancient Mayan sacrificial rite, the victim's chest was cut open and heart removed. Ben had fit the vacation around the public health project of his soul mate, Rebecca Levis. But plans change drastically when Rebecca recognizes the face as B'alam Chuc, a student at her host university. Why was B'alam dressed as a peasant, and what is the meaning of the hieroglyph writings found in his pocket? The police insist it was a robbery, and the social welfare bureaucracy does little to help the traditional Mayan parents, who speak no Spanish. When B'alam's eight-year-old brother, Ichik, asks for help, Ben's sixth investigation swings into action. As Ben and Rebecca use their knowledge of Mayan history and culture to interpret clues from the neglected crime scene, the picture of an evil and debauched criminal conspiracy emerges. The truth about B'alam may come at a high price.
