Many of these are breathtaking in their intensity.The depth of sharpness is so deep that there is nothing left for the eye to rest. I find these really novel. A good portion of this book's portraits are of the kind that the cover photo is. A well-recognized person known for being able to "express themselves facially" (not sure that was a term until 5 minutes ago), then using the lighting depth that makes these so intense.This book is divided about 1/4 into portrait techniques and 3/4 for portraits.The techniques have the usual light setup and tradeoffs, but this book goes deeply into the details of what you want to do. So you have a person in the studio who is well-recognized for character. How do you get the most out of the session for everybody involved? This isn't about straight beauty on a perfect face that has no preconceptions in the viewer's mind. How do you prepare? People skills.The later part of the portrait section gives you some rest with some favorites of mine including Vincent Littlehat and various Star Trek personalities other than the title's Patrick Stewart (Brent Spiner and William Shatner).Honorable mention to the fact that print quality is excellent, the format is big enough and the text editing doesn't look watered down. Well nothing in this book is watered down so there.

It's cool how the toys move about, etc. The writing style is rather old-fashioned though, and it wasn't the most interesting book I've ever read either. But I enjoyed it all the same. I love the Bobbsey Twins series though - also by Laura Lee Hope - and I recommend you read those and her other toy stories if you liked this. Happy reading! -Author Wanna-be

As with other toys, he comes to life when no human eyes are on him, although he can think all the time. The two things I found disappointing were that the formatting was a little off for my kindle and the illustrations were not included in the kindle version.

One of the problems that persons with anxiety face is lack of confidence and sometimes the only way to build confidence is by self-affirmations and trying to become more social. In some cases, meditation is also helpful to curb anxiety. It is comforting to realize that the author has been through and ultimately conquered his anxiety disorders and his now sharing his strategies in this book.

By Rusty Stork I myself is insecure and anxious about going to public places, facing people and meeting people. I guess, it's all normal to us humans. What I like about this book is that it is really interactive in the sense that reading this feels like you are talking personally to the author. I liked that Jack has shared his own experiences and how he learned to overcome his social anxiety. Through sharing these, I can feel and relate with what the author has expererienced and I have been motivated in the later part on how he has done overcoming his anxieties and insecurities. This is one great book to read and I will have it recommended.

I have dealt with a lot of social anxiety and self esteem problems in my past. I am the type of person who thinks a lot. Many times I've been told that my problem is just that I think too much. This book encourages you to think, but to think more logically and more positively. It makes you aware of thought/emotion cycles that are harmful and that are not true. It walks you through changing these. Again, SO grateful for this book. I have bought several copies to give to friends who deal with the same kind of thing. I highly recommend it.

I do not usually read this genre of book, but found myself sucked into her life. I actually got choked up a bit during several chapters. Rebecca is a wonderful writer and has overcome so much in her own life. This is definitely written from the heart.

A 100 year old prayerbook that speaks to us today By Michael Foret Walter Rauschenbusch can be described with many adjectives, because he did so much in so many different fields of endeavor. He was a pastor, seminary professor, theologian, writer, and speaker, among other things. But all of those roles, jobs, and works of his stemmed from what I'm sure he thought of as his most important characteristic, that he was a child of God who tried to be a faithful pilgrim. His entire life (1861-1918) was steeped in faith, Scripture, and church: he was not only a second-generation pastor, he was also a second-generation seminary professor. That he grew up speaking German no doubt helped, given that so much of the important nineteenth-century theology was written in German. His writings and his life demonstrate that his faith was not simply an intellectual exercise, but also a deep pilgrimage of heart and soul.This little book begins with a preface that lays out, in very simple language, Rauschenbusch's belief in what would come to be known, largely due to his writing and speaking, as the “social gospel.” He believed that what he called the “new social purpose,” that is, the growth and effects of the new economic system (of industrial capitalism) “is enlarging and transforming our whole conception of the meaning of Christianity.” Old “feelings” as he put it no longer stirred people religiously as they once had, even the most fundamental ones, but new feelings did. He looked around and saw that while some were doing very well under the new system, the common people were suffering, and Christians felt compassion for those suffering. Those feelings needed to be expressed in the churches but seldom were, mostly based on innate conservatism and attachment to old liturgical prayers and forms. Even many of those who felt the compassion would never do anything about them within the church. To encourage those and others then, he wrote new prayers to address the new problems and the new feelings of a very new and different age from those that had gone on before.Within Protestant and Reformed Christianity, many individuals, churches, and even whole denominations, in fact, had pretty much done away with set prayers entirely except for the Lord's Prayer. As a Baptist, Rauschenbusch understood that very well. Although he does not say so, I am guessing that both as a pastor serving rough areas of New York City and then as a teacher in Rochester he saw those he was trying to minister to and teach struggling with how to understand what was going on around them and thus how to pray about it. He notes here, moreover, that many Christians had given up praying for a variety of reasons. He believed prayer was needed for two important reasons. First, it prepared the faithful for battle, spiritual warfare against evil, in whatever form. But second, public prayer would also improve us individually and collectively.Before he lay his new prayers before the people, however, he took the good example of his greatest Teacher and gave his readers a lesson in how to pray better. In “The Social Meaning of the Lord's Prayer,” Rauschenbusch explains to his readers that this most famous of prayers is very much “part of the heritage of social Christianity” that was “charged with social consciousness.” He even went so far as to state that it was “the great charter of all social prayers.” He analyzes it as a community prayer of solidarity, but notes that while it has very personal elements, its true context is the kingdom of God. He even notes ironically that, even though Jesus specifically denounces not only praying with many words, but also with vain repetitions, that the Lord's Prayer has become the most repeated prayer ever.The second part of the book is divided into five sections of varying size: morning, noon, and night; praise and thanksgiving; for social groups and classes; prayers of wrath; and the progress of humanity. These are truly prayers from the heart for people who are sometimes deep into the nitty-gritty of modern life. They address, among other things, war, alcoholism, working mothers, child labor, kids living on the streets, unemployment, immigration, economic exploitation of the poor by the rich, and various forms of interpersonal abuse. But there are also prayers for people in various professions and walks of life, and for the church and government . The prayer “For Our World” would warm the heart of any good Christian environmentalist! It concludes with “The Author's Prayer,” which first gives thanks to God, asks for pardon if anything in his book offended God out of ignorance or weakness, asks for protection against harming God's cause, and ends with a statement of surrender to God's will. Rauschenbusch notes in the preface that some of the prayers had been published over a number of months in the _American Magazine_' and that the response to those prayers had encouraged him in this endeavor. He also noted gratefully that two of them had been given to him by friends who had given permission for them to be included in the book.Walter Rauschenbusch did indeed do something new here. With _For God and the People_ he gave people models of prayer for occasions and situations for which they had none. But in doing so, he also gave them models that they could use in other situations and for other occasions as well. But more importantly, I think, he also gave them permission to think and act in new ways as well. And that is no small thing. I have a strong feeling that a lot of people wore out a lot of copies of this little book. After all, within half a decade of its publication World War I began, and two decades later began the Great Depression. People needed a lot of prayer indeed.I strongly recommend this book. The preface gives the reader insight into what the social gospel meant to Walter Rauschenbusch, and to his critique of the socioeconomic system that he saw hurting so many people so badly. His short essay on the Lord's Prayer made me look at it differently and to appreciate it even more. And sometimes, as with the Psalms, I think we pray better when we pray together. I wish more people would get to know this book, and then read more Walter Rauschenbusch.

Olson Jr. I read this book on my Kindle as the one free book I borrow for each month from the Kindle lending libraryAs a retired Army colonel who served 30 years with 13 years overseas including a tour in Vietnam followed by teaching high school history for 13 years, I feel qualified in criticizing this slim general survey of military commanders throughout history.The book is marred by numerous errors which reflect poor editing or lack of knowledge on the part of the author. For example, Pyrrhus lived 319 - 272 B.C., but dates of 75 and 81 B.C. are used to date battles in which he fought.In the section devoted to Hannibal (one of my all-time favorite generals), the author describes "Spanish hill tribesmen armed with deadly yet distinctive short shorts." Perhaps, the author is referring to the clothing worn by overweight people to Walmart. Such a sight would have seared the eyes of Hannibal's opponents.In the section on Charlemagne, the author failed to mention that Charles the Great was also the grandson of Charles Martel.Concluding the section on Genghis Khan, the author states, "His grandson Kublai Khan would later realize his dream in the conquest of the Song Chinese, as well as invasions of Japan..." While technically true, the invasions were not successful.The term "janissaries" was not clearly defined in the discussion of Suleiman the Magnificent. I knew that they were generally shock troopers recruited from young men who had been forcibly converted from Christianity to Islam.One of the most egregious errors was describing the 1755 battle at Monongahela as a British victory. It was a debacle for the British. And, the French and Indian War did end in 1758. It ended in 1763.The author missed an opportunity to add to Admiral Nelson's stature by failing to include how the expression "turning a blind eye" came into being at the Battle of Copenhagen.I could go on but will end with the author's comment that Jackson quit the Army in 1851 "to attend Virginia Military Institute." Jackson graduated from West Point. He left the Army to teach at VMI.On a positive note, the author did give a succinct and accurate description of Patton. I only wish he had done so well for others.The book lacked maps and references.I could not recommend this survey of military commanders to anyone.

No rationale or criteria are given. Most of the selections are standard, a few are dubious: Darius III (whose greatest accomplishment was losing to Alexander) and Bernard Montgomery (Market Garden) are perhaps the most unusual selections. The inclusion of Patton, Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson reflect an American bias. Stonewall Jackson was successful in small engagements against fourth-rate Union generals during his short career, but his accomplishments are dwarfed by those of Frederick the Great, who was not included. David Farragut's daring and brilliant seizure of New Orleans had far greater impact on the outcome of the war than Jackson's Valley Campaign. And why select Patton over Eisenhower, who bore the overall responsibility for the success of the Normandy invasion? The greatest value of this short book is probably in introducing Western readers to Yi Sun-Sin, Oda Nobunaga and Khalid ibn Walid.

The author discussed each commander in a concise and straightforward manner, which was okay. I'm familiar with some of these military commanders but there are some I've only read about here so it was great knowing about them. I would want to watch a movie about these other commanders.

As the Civil War rages from the Atlantic Ocean to the California-Arizona border, the brothers do their best to survive and serve their family and country. AUTHOR BIO

Betty Bettencourt Dodds, a fourth-generation California resident, worked in special education as a teacher, school psychologist and administrator. She has a bachelor's degree from the University of California at Berkeley, master's degree from California Lutheran College, and doctorate from Brigham Young University. Betty lives in a retirement community in Lacey, Washington, and enjoys gardening and researching family history. Her article "I Do Not Believe I Was Born to be Shot by an Indian," published by the Heinz History Center in the spring 2011 issue of Western Pennsylvania History, was nominated for a Golden Quill Award recognizing the best history/cultural magazine article in Western Pennsylvania.

Reynolds This is a fantastic book that intertwines Civil War facts with authentic first hand experiences of two young men. As you read you can't help but become emotional attached to our "boys" as they write home of the wonders and horrors they are faced with. The author does an amazing job of presenting rich historical information wrapped around the real life letters creating a moving, page turning must read for all readers, not just Civil War buffs. Simply amazing that these letters survived, thanks to this author's dedication and commitment readers have an opportunity to gain first hand insight into the courage and dedication demonstrated during the Civil War.

Randall Ball Unlike most non-fiction reporting styled books, this book has a personal touch carefully weaved into every page with actual letters from very young brothers who took different paths during the Civil War. It was an amazing investigative discovery to find actual letters to the McCelland family, transcribe them and then weave them into this Civil War history. Betty's style makes the book easy to read, and move from battle to battle as fast and cannon shot. But the personal side of the story from these very young enlisted men is fascinating. You learn so much about their lives never touched on in history books. Very enjoyable.

By Thomas North Powers This is an excellent first-hand account of Civil War action by a surprisingly good journalist, John McClelland. Thanks to Ms. Dodds for going through all those boxes at the Heinz History Center in Pittsburgh and compiling this engrossing account from the McClelland family. If you're interest is the Civil War, you won't find many accounts from the lower ranks as compelling as this. You don't even have to be related to this family (which I am) to find John's brother Tom McClelland's adventures in the far West both enthralling and tragic.

They gather each week for their “Thursday Night Club” and are ready to begin their last year of school when the unthinkable happens – one of them dies tragically. And the story unfolds ---A contest is planned, to honor the memory of their friend, and whoever does the greatest or kindest deed wins. They soon discover that when they are helping other people there is no time to dwell on their own troubles, and their worries just melt away. The friends find that having a life that is filled with compassion help them to deal with their loss.Taken from the book –“Giving more than you take --- now that’s how you build a life worth living.”“A test of endurance. Nope, life is just a never-ending series of choices.”Steven Manchester has crafted a beautiful novella, writing in a comfortable and well-crafted style. I don't like that I have just become acquainted enough with the characters that I want to know more about them and then the story ends. Second, I need to thank Steven Manchester for asking me to read a pre-release of his new novella and, if possible, to review it. He coaxed me out of my "I need more" comfort zone and allowed me to enter the lives of five college seniors in the weeks before Christmas. At first concerned with the typical lives of friends who have become close over the three previous college years, the story changes and deepens following a tragedy affecting the group. From typical issues of studies, pranks and Thursday night get-togethers, the group changes focus from themselves to others. As the characters strive to find a way to improve the lives of others, each of them learns what is important is his/her own life and how to best use that new insight. Yes, it is a holiday story and has a lesson to teach, but as is typical of the author's previous works, the lesson is fitting to the story line and to the characters. Of course I'd like to know more about what happened in everyone's future years, but for now I will enjoy having met these students and all the others whose lives they touched. If you are having trouble in finding holiday spirit, grab a copy of this novella and settle in for an evening's read. You may just find that spark which always makes the holidays so very special.

It makes me happy just looking at it and it automatically puts me in a festive mood. Okay, so I'm a sucker for snowy days/nights, but I do find it beautiful.As you can tell by the page count, this is more of a novella. Just a quick little story about five friends to get your inner do-gooder up and running. I wanted to forewarn you of how quick it is because, as it is with all novellas, you get a sense of the characters and who they are but you don't get to know them well enough to call them friends. They're more like acquaintances you meet for the first time. You know just enough about them to want to see them again.My only criticism would be about Kevin's girlfriend. I understand she was put into the story to help open Kevin's eyes about the type of girls he goes for, but I think she was a bit unnecessary to the plot. If she was removed completely, the nuances of the story would remain exactly the same.Overall, The Thursday Night Club really will fill you with the Christmas spirit and have you pondering what you can do to help your fellow man. I would recommend it to those who enjoy this time of year.*An ecopy of the novella was provided by the author in exchange for an honest review.
