By betty l. dravis I was always told that you can't judge a book by its cover, but with Ghost Orchid you can! The story inside is just as beautiful as the cover. Both are as rare as the ghost orchid on the cover. Author D.K. Christi has woven her knowledge of the Florida Everglades and nature into an exquisite, enchanting love story where a rare ghost orchid plays a magical, pivotal role for all the characters. The story opens with a lonely, middle-aged woman, Mel, taking her daily walk at the Audubon Society Sanctuary, reminiscing about her lost love and other secrets of her past. Although melancholy, she feels blessed to have experienced a "Great Love" in her life. She longs to see her estranged lover "just once more before she dies" and is happier among the sights and sounds of nature than anywhere else. She's a solitary figure at the sanctuary, but she's a "regular" and is known and well-liked by the staff. The story switches back and forth between Mel and Neev, a statuesque beauty who quit modeling to study philosophy at Oxford University. Neev loves photography, so eventually decides to pursue that career, a path that takes her to exotic locations around the world. She lands a plum assignment with a famous photographer, Roger Andrew, who is always seeking a rare "find" in nature. Roger is much older than Neev, but he becomes her mentor and best friend and they have a loving relationship.Although Roger and Neev share many things, she never confides to him about her family life or her reluctance to visit Florida. And Roger doesn't talk much of his ex-wife and son. Roger is passionate in his mission to uncover a "rare find," so when he learns that a ghost orchid is blooming at the Audubon Society Sanctuary, he convinces Neev to accompany him.For reasons I can't reveal without spoiling the plot, Neev is as passionate in her dislike of her mother as Roger is about his drive to find the elusive flower. Neev was raised by a devoted German couple and always wondered about her father. She longs to know more about him, but harbors little hope for a "love of her own."Something happens to Mel at the same time the rare orchid is spotted. That's a tragedy, but it creates the magic in this story, bringing the most unlikely people together in the most magical ways. What happens to Mel? Why has Neev chosen such a solitary, lonely life? What is so unique about this particular ghost orchid? Does it really have mystical powers? Who is the mysterious amateur photographer who becomes Roger's email friend? And how do Roger's Florida relatives fit into the picture?D.K. Christi answers all those questions in a masterful way, with near-perfect pacing, believable, likable characters--and a little help from a rare ghost orchid.I highly recommend this haunting, exquisite love story.ENDNOTE: There are some coincidences that could be considered as contrived by the author, but with a story this well-written and beautiful in its symmetry and uniqueness of plot, who would question that?Reviewed by Betty Dravis, July 22, 2010Author of "Dream Reachers" (with Chase Von) and other books

As I looked at the book cover, before I began reading, I couldn’t help but to feel excited. Just the background, the girl and the white most around the camera had my imagination getting ahead of me. Calming myself down I had to remember to read it first. When I finished reading I saw in awe. The book cover did not disappoint, because the story is as brilliantly beautifully as it is. A mystical romantic story of love, betrayal, heartache and forgiveness I was hooked from the beginning.D.K. Christi is a talented author who has her own style of writing that amazes me. The Everglades plays as a setting in the story, at what points I won’t say because I don’t want to give spoilers, and the author described the setting with more than on point knowledge. Not only is the Everglades described on point, but they were beautifully and vividly described. I felt as though I could image every single detail down to the smallest thing. The story came alive as I read each word and I didn’t want it to ever end. The plot contained twists and turns that kept me from even thinking about putting the book down. Mysteries around the past come slowly undone as she tells her story. “Ghost Orchid” is a magical and yet romantic read that I’m adding to one of my favorite reads. I even felt as though I was following the characters Neev and Mel watching them from afar throughout their lives.D.K. Christi captivated me with this book and stunned me to the very end. It’s a very moving story one that deserves to be read by everyone. She is a brilliant author and I can’t wait to read her next book. I recommend me this book to everyone and guarantee that you will be stunned when your finished. I do caution readers who plan or will read this book by saying that it’s one you need to make sure you schedule is clear until your done since you won’t put it down until the end.I was provided a copy of this book by the author for my honest review.Reviewed By: Keishian @ After Dark Reading Nook

Ghost Orchid is gentler, but equally compelling. It is a story of love, heartache, betrayal and cynicism, of discovery and of yearning and reconciliation. It is as magical as the rare and mysterious Ghost Orchid of its title.A woman obsessed with love for a man who is unable to commit to her finds comfort in an Audubon Society sanctuary in the Everglades. She is estranged from her daughter Neev, who was raised in Germany, and resents her mother. Neev is a brilliant and beautiful woman who travels the world as a wildlife photographer, often in the company of a much older photographer who becomes her best friend and mentor. The characters are brought together by the discovery of a rare ghost orchid in the sanctuary. Author D.K. Christi created characters and setting so vivid that I felt I was in the Everglades. I experienced some initial confusion about who each person was, but by the end, I was as mesmerized as the visitors to the sanctuary. I didn't want the book to end.Ghost Orchid is not a "standard" romance, but it is romantic and mystical and haunting. Well worth reading and the kind of book that stays with you.

Meditations (Illustrated), by Marcus Aurelius

Amazon.com Review One measure, perhaps, of a book's worth, is its intergenerational pliancy: do new readers acquire it and interpret it afresh down through the ages? The Meditations of Marcus Aurelius, translated and introduced by Gregory Hays, by that standard, is very worthwhile, indeed. Hays suggests that its most recent incarnation--as a self-help book--is not only valid, but may be close to the author's intent. The book, which Hays calls, fondly, a "haphazard set of notes," is indicative of the role of philosophy among the ancients in that it is "expected to provide a 'design for living.'" And it does, both aphoristically ("Think of yourself as dead. You have lived your life. Now take what's left and live it properly.") and rhetorically ("What is it in ourselves that we should prize?"). Whether these, and other entries ("Enough of this wretched, whining monkey life.") sound life-changing or like entries in a teenager's diary is up to the individual reader, as it should be. Hays's introduction, which sketches the life of Marcus Aurelius (emperor of Rome A.D. 161-180) as well as the basic tenets of stoicism, is accessible and jaunty. --H. O'Billovich

Review Lots of good feedback on this wonderful book, including calls from Andrew Roberts and AC Grayling to say how much they are enjoying it. This is translating very well in to coverage. With radio features including FRONT ROW (BBC RADIO 4) on Wednesday 5 April which included not only a clip from the film Gladiator but also from the lovely Hannibal Lector in Silence of the Lambs who wasa fan. And the producer says this generated the most calls they've had for along time, asking for further details of the book. THE VERB (BBC RADIO 3) included an interview with the translator Gregory Hays. "See the movie, read the book. Hard on the heels of Richard Harris's portrayal of the Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius in Gladiator comes a new translation of that ruler's celebrated Meditations." JOAN SMITH, THE INDEPENDENT "Sparky and slangily readable, and for those who know Marcus only as the Richard Harris character in Ridley Scott's Gladiator, this is a chance to become better aquainted" BLAKE MORRISON, THE GUARDIAN We are expecting good review and thinkpieces including THE EVENING STANDARD, and THE OBSERVER with a feature in the DAILY MAIL tbc.

Review “The emperor Marcus Aurelius, the proverbial philosopher-king, produced in Greek a Roman manual of piety, the Meditations, whose impact has been felt for ages since. Here, for our age, is his great work presented in its entirety, strongly introduced and freshly, elegantly translated by Gregory Hays for the Modern Library.”—Robert Fagles

990 of 1001 people found the following review helpful. steel for your spine By DDW Reviews One should have more than one translation for Meditations. Note this difference between Maxwell Staniforth's translation in 1964 (Penguin Classics) and Hay's 2002 translation in these two passages.1964: When force of circumstance upsets your equanimity, lose no time in recovering your self-control, and do not remain out-of-tune longer than you can help. Habitual recurrence to the harmony will increase your mastery of it.2002: When jarred, unavoidably, by circumstances, revert at once to yourself, and don't lose the rhythm more than you can help. You'll have a better grasp of the harmony if you keep going back to it.-----------------1964: Adapt yourself to the environment in which your life has been cast, and show true love to the fellow-mortals with whom destiny has surrounded you.2002: The things ordained for you - teach yourself to be at one with those. And the people who share them with you - treat them with love. With real love.------------------The 1964 version is regal, while the 2002 (Hays') version is Aurelius writing, quickly, in a spiral notebook while on horseback, the equivalent of "memo to myself."Reading this book is like taking a cold shower, or visiting a favorite bartender, who insists on serving you coffee, not drink. Hays has brought us a Marcus Aurelius who puts his hand on your shoulder, looks you in the eye, and tells you like it is: Get over yourself. You can't change the world. Do your best and realize you are of this earth. Human experience is muddy, so what? This book is best read in tough times, when you could use a little steel in your spine.

Of course, what counts as `appropriate' is somewhat subjective. What I was looking for was a translation that is clear and accurate; one that manages to convey something of a feeling for the both the person who wrote, and the times they wrote in. In this Staniforth excels.Unlike say, the Benjamin Jowett translation of Plato which (at least to my ears) has a distinctly Victorian ring, or the popular new age paraphrases of many of the Stoics (and in truth they are paraphrases or adaptations rather than translations), to me Staniforth (whose translation dates from 1964) strikes just the right balance. The words of Marcus Aurelius are rendered intelligibly and with a dignity and awareness of the historical context. The reader is neither forced to re-read and ponder (i.e., speculatively re-translate), nor wince at inappropriate colloquialisms of 21st century English. Better still, one can immediately perceive and appreciate the times in which the work was written. No mean accomplishment, to say the least.Of course, each reader needs to make this judgment for themselves. Amazon provides an excellent (and free) way of doing this with its `search inside this book' feature, which is enormously useful for anyone making this decision.

The message is simple but extraordinarily powerful: life is short, the past and the future are inaccessible, pain and pleasure have no meaning, but inside each one of us there is a ruling faculty that is touched only by itself. Only that which makes us better capable of confronting our condition with resolution and courage can be said to be good, and only that which makes us worse and more unsatisfied can be said to be bad. The only thing that is of any importance is our own private quest for perfection, which no external power can ever destroy. Marcus Aurelius delivers many insightful and inspirational observations about human nature and the human condition, and he makes an excellent rational argument for seeking the good and for acting modestly and continently. I cannot think or a more satifying and moving work, and it is all the more poignant because it was written by a man who wielded almost absolute power and lived surrounded by the luxury, yet managed to keep things in perspective and to occupy himself only with what truly matters. One sentence captures perfectly the spirit of his writings: "Where a man can live, there he can also live well." An extraordinary testimony of wisdom and fortitude.

While draught and desertification are intensifying around the world, corporations are aggressively converting free-flowing water into bottled profits. The water wars of the twenty-first century may match or even surpass the oil wars of the twentieth. In Water Wars: Privatization, Pollution and Profit -Vandana Shiva, the world's most prominent radical scientist ( the Guardian) , shines a light on activists who are fighting corporate maneuvers to convert this life-sustaining resource into more gold for the elites. In Water Wars, Shiva uses her remarkable knowledge of science and society to outline the emergence of corporate culture and the historical erosion of communal water rights. Using the international water trade and industrial activities such as damming, mining and aquafarming as her lens, Shiva exposes the destruction of the earth and the disenfranchisement of the world's poor as they are stripped of rights to a precious common good. In her passionate, feminist style, Shiva celebrates the spiritual and traditional role water has played in communities throughout history, and warns that water privatization threatens cultures and livelihoods worldwide. Shiva calls for a movement to preserve water access for all, and offers a blueprint for global resistance based on examples of successful campaigns.

Articulate spokesperson for the people By Malvin Vandana Shiva's concise, intelligent and well-written book Water Wars examines the political economy of water, a scarce resouce that is fast increasing in value all over the world.Among many themes explored in the book, the author effectively contrasts two markedly different approaches to water stewardship: centralized vs. decentralized management systems. Centralized systems are associated with private for-profit capitalism whereas decentralized systems are typically managed by local community co-ops.Shiva draws from her extensive knowledge of her native India to describe how centralized controls imposed during the colonial and post-colonial eras have largely failed to meet the needs of the people and the environment. She discusses how dams built with World Bank and other foreign dollars merely reallocated water resources at an enormous cost to the environment and to the many poor people displaced from their ancestral homes. The author also points out that modern pumps installed in the name of progress have unfortunately succeeded in withdrawing water at an unsustainable rate, thereby causing thousands of wells to run dry and consequently causing suffering for many.On the other hand, Shiva relates cases where villagers have returned to native systems of water management that have succeeded in resuscitating wells, streams and rivers that had previously dried up. These projects are managed democratically by the villagers themselves with an eye towards sustainability and social justice (everyone gets their fair share of water but no one gets more water than necessary).Shiva also gave the book a spiritual dimension. She cites both ancient and contemporary sources to prove that water holds special meaning to people the world over for its unique life-giving properties. The implication is that it is perhaps immoral to regard water as merely the latest market opportunity. Clearly, respect for the natural environment and the needs of other people requires us to do better.Water Wars is a great book for anyone who cares to learn more about water management issues and democracy.

45 of 49 people found the following review helpful. Is Water worth fighting for? By Friederike Knabe With the debate around water scarcity expanding across the globe, Vandana Shiva's Water Wars is an important book to read. With it, she has produced another collection of thought-provoking and well-researched essays. A physicist turned environmental activist, Shiva has a passion for the "essence of life". Water, she argues, is intrinsically different from other resources and products and can NOT be treated simply as a commodity: without water people and the environment cannot survive. To subject water to commercial restrictions and to control its availability to people and communities is unacceptable.Vandana Shiva discusses the failures and successes of diverse water management systems, past and present. She builds her case by reviewing traditional water systems and evaluating the impact of modern dam building. She examines the recent and current conflicts around water and access controls between countries and peoples. Contrary to others who claim that water scarcity will lead to conflicts in the future, Shiva brings evidence that water wars are already with us and are happening all over the world. She is furthermore convinced, based on her research, that conflicts will become increasingly violent as fresh water resources dwindle.Destruction of fragile ecosystems and the displacement of people and communities have resulted from the construction of the huge dams, so popular in the sixties to the eighties. She describes the impacts of some of the best-known big dams in India, the United States, Mexico, and China. Using her in-depth knowledge of the Indian Subcontinent she strengthens her arguments with many examples from that region. But she has also studied the conflicts surrounding the Rio Grande rerouting and the big Hoover Dam that has channeled huge amounts of water from Texas and other crop growing regions to satisfy the ever-increasing water hunger of California. For some readers, Vandana Shiva's focus on Indian examples of water system mismanagement may seem a bit tedious. However, it is worth persisting as there are important lessons to be learned from her examples, in particular, as numerous successful projects have also emerged from India. The successful traditional and present-day initiatives, which she cites, are primarily based on locally managed and community controlled water systems. Experience in many developing countries confirm her conclusions that water is most valued and best preserved for people and environment when managed at the community level with user participation. The chapter 'Food and Water' is a reminder and warning of the fragility of our food production systems.Privatization of water resources and systems is a major concern to many and Vandana Shiva adds her strong voice. The World Bank estimated the potential water market at $1trillion. Shiva cites examples where the privatization of water has resulted in profits for a minority while increasing the economic burden on the poor. She warns of the consequences if water scarcity develops into a marketing opportunity for private business and transnational corporations.Vandana Shiva's focus on ethics does not come as a surprise to the reader. Her 'Principles of Water Democracy' take a strong stand for water rights in the current debate whether water is a "human need" or a "human right". She ends with a reminder that water sources have been sacred throughout history. If we were to understand 'value' without its monetary connotation, usually implicit these days, we could treasure natural resources like water and biodiversity without a price tag - as major elements of the global common. This well-researched and well-written book should be read, whatever side of the current debate the reader may be.

They inherently belong to all people collectively, from which to benefit and to be responsible for as stewards. Including being a guide to participating in popular resistance, this is a history of how the principle of water as a commons has evolved as part and parcel of the evolutionary rise of the human species. Also catalogued is the very recent advent of the concept of water as a privatized commodity.Although Shiva doesn't say it in so many words, the book often reads as a direct indictment of the United States because many of the problems she enumerates trace back directly to the fossil fuel economy. The US is the most egregious and careless contributor to the degradation of the environment. Although the US stands to experience a large part of the devastation global warming is already wreaking, perhaps the loss of Florida, Alabama, Louisiana, and Texas to a potential 2 foot rise in sea levels, many poor and island nations will bear the disproportionate brunt of global warming's effects. This book might easily be perceived as a treatise in Luddism. Shiva says almost every so-called advance in water management, as for example diverting and draining rivers, which is necessarily a move to centralize and privatize water management, results in catastrophic social and ecological consequences - especially natural disasters such as floods, supercyclones, and droughts. When water is managed locally and collectively by the indigenous as a commons, its use is equitable, ecologically sound, and sustainable - words of wisdom from mouth of justice. When water is treated as a commodity, and corporatized the unforeseen consequences, which are quite serious, include pollution and climate change.Shiva documents many natural and man-made disasters that have resulted from this practical and ideological shift in water management. She draws a direct causal relationship between technological application in water management and ecological disruption and social conflict. The worst of these, a supercyclone that devastated the state of Orissa in India in 1999, "damaged 1.83 million houses and 1.8 million acres of paddy crops in 12 coastal districts. Eighty percent of the coconut trees were uprooted or broken in half, and all the banana and papaya plantations were wiped out. More than 300,000 cattle perished, more than 1,500 fisherman and fisherwomen lost their entire source of livelihood...local workers estimate the (human) toll to be about 20,000."Shiva is well-studied in water management and its history. She draws from a rich array of sources, many obscure but important; a large number are cites of her own past voluminous work. Her arguments are intuitive more than deductive. Once you accept her premise of water resources as a commons, and she makes the argument gently, but unrelentingly, as if it is a self-evident truth, the rest of her conclusions unfold cogently, compellingly, and of their own accord. The WTO and World Bank involvement in water management are ominous signs of water's commodification, self-destructive and suicidal, teaches Shiva. Small groups resisting these developments have won several victories. Arundhati Roy among other prominent Indians has enjoined the struggle against the Narmada Dam project, a mammoth project of corporatization in India.Projects like Narmada, and there are many of them, are done under the rubric of capitalism and "free trade." These last two terms understood in practice, as should be obvious by now, as the socialization of risks and costs and the privatization of profits for the rich, and fiscal discipline and restraint for the poor. This corporate welfare takes the form of subsidies, give-aways, tax breaks, and displacement of the indigenous. This is a very focused study of water rights, impressively researched and well-documented. Shiva presents the facts and lets you uncover the truth for yourself, like wiping a mirror clear of dust. The historical shift of water as a commons to water as a commodity is almost the same as the history of colonialism. Shiva traces a richly researched history of British colonization of India synonymous there with this shift in water management. Her writing is sometimes dry but rich in fact and research. In wading deep into the minutiae of water management's history, and the consequences of its commodification, Shiva shows that much of the supposed progress in the administration and management of water rights have really been retrograde movements from policies and practicalities of fairness and equitability. She also warns ominously that the 21st Century will see wars and conflicts over this resource in much the same way the 20th did over oil.The clash of water as a commons versus its degradation into a commodity was perhaps best illustrated in Cochambamba, Bolivia in 1999. In response to the sell off of a municipal resource to a foreign corporation, a coalition of militant peasant groups formed the Coalition in Defense of Water and Life. It organized to address skyrocketing water bills and poor service. Of all corporations, Bechtel, a huge military contractor to the Pentagon, "bought" water rights in Cochambamba. It wasn't without several serious skirmishes that the peasant groups prevailed and reasserted their sovereignty over water. Bechtel exited Bolivia, and the United States government took up its cause, suing Bolivia on behalf of Bechtel in the World Trade Court. That case is still pending.Shiva makes an important contribution. As impressive as the book itself is the exposure to an activist with a wide knowledge and a rich oeuvre. She wraps up her study with a look at the sacredness of water in India. The Ganges River is traditionally one of the holiest sites in India. The multinational corporations would prefer to see this resource as an asset on their ledgers. Shiva never mentions specifically what she is doing activist-wise to join the struggle. But it's obvious from her energy and devotion to the issue that she is very actively involved. She makes it clear she is for justice for the great masses of people before the interests of those who would commodify water.

Showcases the principles of composition and aesthetic design, with numerous examples to illustrate the compositional points being discussed

There are many general titles on landscape photography, but few that really tackle the issue of composition in great depth. This guide assumes a good working knowledge of the technical basics—such as correct exposure, filtration, and sharpness—and concentrates on the "heart and soul" of landscape photography: the principles of composition and aesthetic design to convey meaning and emotion. While technique is not ignored, the emphasis is on how it impacts on the aesthetics of the image—for example, using filtration to enhance the mood of a scene rather than simply to balance the extremes of contrast. Because of the nature of the subject matter, this is very much a picture-led book, with numerous example pictures to illustrate the compositional points being discussed. At the back of the book there will be thumbnails of all the pictures used, with a summary of the technical details—camera, lens, ISO, shutter speed, aperture, filtration—to ensure that those who crave technical information are not disappointed.

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. the best photography book on landscapes By Daniel P. Lefebvre After 40 years as a photographer i believe this is, by far, the best photography book on landscapes. It isn't a book on how to use a camera. That's what the manual is for. Although they do touch lightly on that. But if you want to learn all about composition, how to control light, and all the other things that make a beautiful image, then you won't go wrong buying this book. Read it, study it, and then practice the things you learn and you'll see your photography greatly improve. The key word here being practice . The photo illustrations are beautiful. Great book.

Fundamentals of Physics, Volume 2 (Chapters 21 - 44), by David Halliday, Robert Resnick, Jearl Walker

About the Author Jearl Walker, professor of physics at Cleveland State University, received his BS in physics from MIT in 1967 and his PhD in physics from University of Maryland in 1973. His book "The Flying Circus of Physics" was published 30 years ago, has been translated into at least 10 languages, and is still being sold world wide. For 16 years he toured his Flying Circus talk throughout the U.S. and Canada, introducing such physics stunts as the bed-of-nails demonstration and the walking-on-hot-coals demonstration to countless physics teachers, who then proceeded to hurt themselves when they repeated the stunts in their own classrooms. These talks led to his PBS television show Kinetic Karnival which ran nationally for years and which earned an Emmy.

Roman Lives, Corrected Edition: Ancient Roman Life Illustrated by Latin Inscriptions (Focus Classical Sources), by Brian K. Harvey

Review "It is humbling to encounter 'real' Latin, in letters inscribed on a building or tombstone, and to be utterly at a loss beyond the obvious. Yet, as Roman Lives demonstrates. . . much of this material can be relatively easy to decode. Furthermore, this book shows how epigraphy can open a window onto ancient lives and their humanity. This book should thus prove a rich resource for teachers of Latin and Roman civilization." --The Classical Outlook"The purpose of this sourcebook is to provide the uninitiated reader with a selection of tomb epitaphs, statue bases, building inscriptions and ancient graffiti that reflect the diversity of Roman society during the first two centuries A.D.  o this end, [Roman Lives] is a useful contribution, both to introducing a wider readership to the relevance of Latin inscriptions to studies of cultural relations in early imperial Rome and to the ancient epigraphic environment more broadly. Also welcome are Harvey's translations of the selected inscriptions. His reading of the Latin is consistent, literal and transparent." --Bryn Mawr Classical Review

From the Back Cover A sourcebook of Roman inscriptions which reveal not only the daily lives of average Romans, but the way scholars infer the facts of Roman civilization from non-literary records. For courses in Roman civilization at all levels.

About the Author Brian K. Harvey (Ph.D. University of Michigan) is an Assistant Professor of Classics at Kent State University.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Interesting look into the Roman world By M. Miller I had to buy this book for my Roman Achievement class and I thoroughly enjoyed it- both the book AND the class! Much of what know of the lives of Romans was found by studying the many examples of how they wanted to be remembered- and that is primarily what this book offers. I like that it gives both English and Latin translations of tombstone inscriptions and that it is categorized by different social classes. This gave me a lot of insight into the differences between the lives of the aristocracy versus regular Roman families, slaves, freedman, or persons of the military. If you enjoy learning about the Roman era this book is a must have!

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Great intro to Latin epigraphy By Edward Yarborough This book is good because it not only provides translations of a variety of interesting Latin inscriptions, it also teaches you a lot about the fascinating field of Latin epigraphy. It achieves this not merely by means of some nice introductory essays, but by printing, not simply a translation of each inscription, but also a relatively unedited Latin text followed by a more edited version of the Latin in which all the many abbreviations have been expanded into their full-word equivalents. This enables the reader to compare the translation with the text and learn those ubiquitous Latin abbreviations of which the Romans were so fond.

2 of 4 people found the following review helpful. good sourcebook By antiquarian good sourcebook for Classics or a Latin class- specific Roman inscriptions and what they reflect about the ancient world.

Every night since his girlfriend left him, David Alexander's sleep has been troubled by vivid fantasies of suicide. After an unusual romantic encounter during an illusionist's performance, David's repressed post-breakup loneliness and depression begin to manifest themselves in increasingly bizarre and sometimes dangerous ways. Part surreal mystery, part hallucinatory tragicomedy, Kissing Oblivion details a week in the darkly funny life of a man whose bond with reality, and possibly space and time, has become severed to the point where he can no longer trust his own senses.

Kiss a couple of hours goodbye because you'll be reading this from start to finish By Roland Martinez Andy Mascola delivers a suspenseful deliberate book. I read it all in one sitting because I had to know what was going to happen next. The author explores the line between sanity and madness in the daily stresses that we all face. If you're read another book by Mascola I'd highly recommend this. If you haven't this is a great entry point. I can't recommend this book highly enough.

I thought it was very Lynchian at parts. The main character David Alexander kind of reminded me of Agent Dale Cooper at times. If he never joined the F.B.I. and was working a regular nine to five. But Alexander is definitely his own character. Some parts of the book felt like if David Lynch had directed Groundhog Day. It was surreal and haunted, but also kept light by the characters, who were all very easy to relate to, well rounded and funny. The story and the writing were both excellent. Enjoyed the hell out of it. Definitely my favorite book by Andy yet.

Free Ebook PDF The Rise Of ISIS, by The New York Times

Culled from The New York Times archives, this Tbook chronicles the rise of the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria, known as ISIS or ISIL, a terrorist organization noted for its appalling savagery. In recent years, ISIS has skillfully used social media to spread its message of fear, with videos showing unspeakable cruelty toward those it considers “infidels” as well as the wanton destruction of ancient artworks.

ISIS’s harsh tactics were fostered by its founder, Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, a Jordanian militant and former convict, who established al Qaeda in Iraq amid the chaos of the U.S.-led invasion and toppling of Saddam Hussein’s government. Zarqawi mobilized Sunni insurgents to wage war against U.S. forces and Shiite Muslims. Wanted by U.S. authorities, Zarqawi was killed in an American airstrike in 2006. His terror network — renamed the Islamic State in Iraq and now led by Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi — moved into Syria, taking advantage of the fall of Bashar Assad’s government. In 2013, the group joined forces with the Al Nusra Front, an al Qaeda affiliate in Syria, and reinvented itself as the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria. With a power vacuum in much of the Middle East, ISIS appears to be expanding to Libya and beyond.

Purple Rain is a song, an album, and a film - each one a commercial success and cultural milestone. How did this semiautobiographical musical masterpiece that blurred R&B, pop, dance, and rock sounds come to alter the recording landscape and become an enduring touchstone for successive generations of fans?

Purple Rain is widely considered to be among the most important albums in music history and is often named the best soundtrack of all time. It sold over a million copies in its first week and blasted to number one on the charts, where it would remain for a full six months and eventually sell over 20 million copies worldwide. It spun off three huge hit singles, won Grammys and an Oscar, and took Prince from pop star to legend.

Coinciding with the 30th anniversary year of Purple Rain's release, acclaimed music journalist Alan Light takes a timely look at the making and incredible popularizing of this once seemingly impossible project. With impeccable research and in-depth interviews with people who witnessed Prince's audacious vision becoming a reality, Light reveals how a rising but not yet established artist from the Midwest was able not only to get Purple Rain made but deliver on his promise to conquer the world.

This book is worth your time. Unlike many other books about Prince, this one actually did research the topic. Alan interviewed members of The Revolution as well as many others in Prince's inner circle (as well as Prince himself for other projects) and it shows. There are new perspectives and it is great to read what others remember about something that occurred 30 years ago, without getting too Roshamon on us. Purple Rain is one of the greatest albums in my lifetime and deserves to be examined properly. This book does that. Well worth your time if you are a fan of the music, the movie and of the era. I would rank this up there with Per Nilsen's DMSR, Alex Hahn's POSSESSED and UPTOWN Magazine's THE VAULT.

A lot of behind the scenes information not before known. Most interesting the description of the tension that existed between the band and Prince as he encouraged them to be part of his grand vision only to simultaneously distance himself as he became a superstar. Former manager Bob Cavallo provides some of the most interesting insights as does production coordinator Alan Leeds. These guys were able to assess the dynamics of what was going on with intelligence and detachment even while admitting that Prince ultimately, when it came to the vision of the movie, knew better than everyone. However, it's also interesting to see, as a lifelong Prince fan, that Prince clearly was never able (or willing) to again put that much focus into any other subsequent project. He was obviously frustrated with the among of time and energy it took to bring the entire plan to fruition, including the subsequent touring, which he cut short after 6 months, never taking the obvious step of taking the tour to Europe, which would have extended the whole Purple Rain period for another 6-12 months. Light does a great job of illustrating the awe and frustration of everyone in the camp at that time and it makes for a fast, engaging read. Highly recommended.

By Amazon Customer "Purple Rain" is practically synonymous with the man who is Prince and this book offers excellent insight into the inner workings of what would become one of the most popular and simply one of the best things to happen in the history of music. Unlike Toure's "I Would Die 4 U", which made for a relatively un-insightful disappointing amateur read, Alan Light's book takes you right into the heart of the 1984 phenomenon. For those who remember when Purple slowly built up momentum to reign over the 1980s, I imagine this book will create a wonderful sense of nostalgia, as well as allows you to be a fly on the wall to history in the making. For those of us born too late to witness the release of "Purple Rain", Alan Light effortlessly provides the vicarious experience of a lifetime with his imagery and storytelling, not to mention fantastic insights from those who were actually there--like Wendy, Lisa, and Dr. Fink to name a few. With an entertainer like Prince, whose lack of Internet presence on sites like Youtube makes him increasingly inaccessible to the younger generation of 20-somethings and under, this book offers great insight to one of the world’s most popular and elusive musical geniuses. Until Prince is ready to tell his own story, this is the next best thing. Highly recommended for Prince fans everywhere!
