The author was taught by Nazi teachers in high school, experienced four years in the Wehrmacht, sunrvived the bombing of Dresden and came to America five years after he had escaped from a prisoner of war camp in Italy. Emigrating in 1952 with his wife and two children he took any job a newcomer can get while again attending law school in Washington. Griffin This is a very interesting and enjoyable book. I had not read much written by someone who went through War II as a German citizen and soldier. Peter Heidenberger's description of his experience in Germany before and during War II and afterwards as a reporter covering the War Crime trials was fasinating. And his description of his subequent move to the United States with his wife and family was both fun and uplifting. It has always amazed me that someone from another country and culture who speaks another language can come to the United States and prosper through hard work and a deep desire to succeed. Reminded me of "In the Garden of Beasts" in that it was a first person account by a young person who was simply recalling what he saw. There is no spin here or agenda which gives the book an authenticity that is lost by many of the third party accounts of most historians.

A sherif walking the line of right and wrong, a strong sense of family loyalty, biker gangs, drugs, and murder galore. This book will definitely keep your attention. I have to say that I really loved all the characters nicknames, though it was slightly confusing at first trying to remember which nickname correlated to which birth name. The nicknames really came in handy when discussing the Honeycutts, since they were all named Harrell (Sr., Jr., and I). This action pact, murder-mystery is one that I’m glad to have read, though it definitely has a few cringe-worthy scenes. The author does an amazing job with the plot. I felt that the storyline was very believable in a sense that something very similar to its events could actually happen in real life. The writing style flowed very nicely and there were only a couple of editorial errors that caught my eye. This book is definitely not for the younger crowd, due to its content, but I would highly recommend it to anyone who likes the gritty, bordering gruesome (without the blood and guts) murder/thriller/mystery genre. Great read that has made me want to keep this author on my radar.

Campbell delivers a Texas crime story that is high on action, mystery, suspense, and interesting characters. While the characters are interesting I do have to say that you aren't going to like many of them as even the central Sheriff Burkett is one that isn't the most likeable of people.In the story we follow Burkett who has to investigate the death of the local crime lord's wife. Only things get complicated as he was having an affair with her and it looks like her death was the result of a contract killing. Will he be able to find out if the Ghosts of the Confederate Dead biker gang is actually responsible while keeping his own involvement out of the limelight?Things quickly show to not be what they seem as more clues are uncovered and the entire novel is a non-stop murder mystery with dangers lurking around every corner which directly involve the darker side of society. A fun read with some surprise twists and a strong ending.

Campbell, is an interesting and entertaining read that I couldn't seem to put down. I love the fact that it contained a lot of dark humor, and the characters were filled with life.Rita Honeycutt wanted out of her marriage to White Eye; she was being abused, and could no longer live the life she was living. Finally she worked up the courage to file for divorce, but this didn't go over well with White Eye or his Father, due to the fact that they were both worried that she'd end up with half of the farm in the settlement. This is where Sheriff Burkett comes into play; he will do everything in his power to make sure that Rita stays safe during the divorce process.Overall, this was a well written book with a great premise and fun characters. There were a few unexpected twists in there, which made it even more fun to read. I would definitely give it five stars, and would highly recommend.

Anyone even remotely interested in tattoos should read this - I believe they call it a MUST READ. The author paints (pun intended) an amazing account of what a tattoo is - where they came from and where they are going, what it means to be a tattoo artist, as well as what it means to be a tattoo client. He further explains what goes through the minds of both the artist(s) and the client(s) in their choices, both good and bad. His sarcasm, his wit, and his uncanny ability to take you to that place we all know too well, but some are afraid to venture there - the Human mind! The author truly understands what makes you tick and isn't afraid to tell you. When you look at your past tattoo, or future tattoo, what do you see?

By Randy If you don't have a tattoo or even if you have a tattoo Dave does a fine job of informing you of the things to expect as you get your first tattoo, and for the people with tattoos already maybe you'll find yourself in one of his many stories or maybe pick up on some bad habits you didn't know you had. I found the book to be not only funny,sarcastic and witty, but also what it's like on the other side of the needle dealing with the every day sheep that want it their way.

Après un long et attentif examen des arguments émis pour et contre, je me suis définitivement rangé parmi les partisans de la dernière opinion.

In 1819, the American whaler Essex was sailing deep into the great equatorial hunting grounds of the Pacific when it was destroyed by a maddened sperm whale. By all reports, the 85-foot whale deliberately rammed the ship twice and sank it. The incident, which occurred in the same year that Herman Melville was born, became a primary source of inspiration for Moby-Dick. Indeed, much of the detail and color in the final chapter of Melville's work is drawn directly from these three eyewitness accounts. The book also served as the basis for the 2015 movie In the Heart of the Sea, directed by Ron Howard and starring Chris Hemsworth.The harrowing events are described in detail by the first mate, Owen Chase, and corroborated in all essentials by both the captain, George Pollard, and the second mate, Thomas Chappel. Although the ship sank quickly after the attack, the horror lingered for months, and ended in cannibalism as the survivors drifted helplessly in small boats across thousands of miles of open sea.These three narratives are reprinted from a rare limited edition. By Chris Gregory I just have one criticism so I'll get that out of the way - the kindle edition would be easier to navigate with an interactive index. This is an excellent introduction and short but highly exciting and graphic story followed by various newspaper articles and related short stories. Sprinkled throughout the book are inspiring illustrations.This is my favorite genre of tale - a true historical story of excitement and survival, man versus nature. Although told as a narrative without dialogue, this type of first-hand survival tale, somewhat like a journal, is both intriguing and thrilling. I highly recommend this true story and it is much more riveting than Moby Dick which was a fiction inspired by the actual wreck of the Essex.

Rovatti Owen Chase and the rest of the survivors of the Whale Ship Essex prove that the colonists of America were some of the bravest participants in the history of the world.This book was originally reccommended to me as a companion to Herman Melville's "Moby Dick", and I wasn't expecting to be so horified and captivated.Owen Chase lends a very personal component to this book. It must have been difficult for a man of his stature to recount, in detail this bizarre ship wreck and the even more extraodinary aftermath.

11 of 12 people found the following review helpful. Another great read. Curran delivers once more By Zombie_Gunslinger I've been following Curran on and off for the last 5 or 6 years. It's true, there was a time where I wasn't reading any of his work because it all seemed the same: over-descriptive writing, gore in place of a a decent storyline, repeated plots and recycled violence. However, in more recent months, I've found myself returning to his works, and it seems that time off has been totally worth it. Curran has stepped up his game, writing quicker, more action-packed novellas in place of the plodding, sometimes boring novels of previous years. Now, in Grimweave, Curran once again returns to Vietnam, only, unlike Headhunter, this time, the creature he creates is far more scary and gruesome:"The Creature was waiting for him. It was sitting there, clinging to the lip of the chasm like some great and impossible insect about the size of a pickup...or maybe two of them. It was some sort of thing Spiers had seen through the scope, only much, much larger. Its body was wide and low, cream-colored, roughly figure eight-shaped, like two plated discs joined together, each of which seemed to be formed of interlocking segments. Not smooth in the least, but chitinous and ridged, convoluted with bony furrows and narrow furrows like ribs, lots of knobs and hollows set between. And spines. A series of them rose from its dorsal plates and each of them looked long enough to skewer a man. Obscenely skeletal, the creature had at least ten legs, maybe as many as a dozen, each big around as a fence post and jointed like those of a crab. A sheer membrane of flesh webbed them together at the upper extremities. At each leg was a bulging pod that oozed nets of spreading, living webs. It looked like a living exoskeleton."If there is any doubt that Curran is one of the most descriptive, highly visual authors in the field, that quote, directly from the book, should shut down any naysayers. That he has such a rich imagination doesn't surprise me, but the fact that he can translate that into words and sentences so rich in detail and vivid illustration is a skill that all authors want, but few can immolate. Even now, as I work on my own short stories and formulate ideas for others, it's Curran's strong talent that has been a huge inspiration for me. In a way, it's unfortunate that Curran still sneaks under the radar in literary circles, however, the fact that he seems to be grossly underrated isn't necessarily a bad thing. I can only imagine how much his work would suffer should he, somehow, sign a massive contract with Scribner or Harper.Grimweave may not be quite as strong as Hive or Hive 2 (both of which really introduced me to the Cthulhu mythos and Lovecraft as a whole), but don't let that keep you from giving it a shot. It's actually a lot of fun and a quick, entertaining read.

Wow, I powered through this book because of all the positive reviews and figured the end would have a big payoff. Boy was that the wrong call! Where to begin?All of the characters in the book are one-dimensional and I found myself rooting against them. The action described in the book is mediocre. The dialogue is horrible and it’s like the author watched Full Metal Jacket and Predator on side by side TVs, then tried to use the foul-mouthed rants to fill pages in between the story of those two movies merging together. And though the derogatory homophobic misogynist language is rampant, the author refrains from using ugly racial slurs which were common at the time (this is a period piece set during the Vietnam conflict). Go all in or stay out!And then comes the adjectives. How many ways can we describe the heat and humidity of the jungle? Read every other page and find out…we get it…it’s hot and humid.I’m pretty sure the author never re-read his work after his first draft because of the inconsistencies on every page. At some points the jungle is so still and silent, only to have the next paragraph talk about the incessant chirping of the bats overhead…huh? The group is well-disciplined veterans only a page later to be sniveling in fear, then back to “the mission comes first” trained killers they are…WTF? And my favorite, a certain character is killed in front of everyone, and two pages later the main character asks about him coming back from looking around with the others (Chapter 23). It’s called proof-reading.And just to get nit-picky, does the author seriously not have any military friends that could at least give the story a once over? The ranks are wrong…Any Lance Corporal that ever called Master Gunnery Sergeant, “Gunny,” would wake up with a broken jaw knowing never to demote him again. “Gunny” is for a Gunnery Sergeant and “Master Guns” can be the affectionate term for a Master Gunnery Sergeant, which is a full two ranks higher than a Gunny. You also wouldn’t ever refer to the man as “NCO Carmody”…it’s Master Gunnery Sergeant Carmody (and he’s an SNCO for Staff Non-Commissioned Officer). Those are just irritating points. One infuriating thing is that no officer would act the way the Major acted, much less consider killing one of his men because it’s slowing the mission down (the worst thing any officer deals with is the loss of anyone in their command).Without giving away any spoilers, the explanation at the end of the book was unoriginal and made little sense with the way events unfolded.Overall, this is a horrible read and you’re better off watching atrocious movies on SyFy rather than devoting any time to this.

If you're a fan of Tim Curran's work like I am, then this book will not disappoint. It's full of the classic chilling drama that we have all come to expect from his work. The characters are all very cool, especially Spiers. Man goes through the stuff, and you just aren't sure how he will come out, or even if he will at all. I found the creatures to be particularly unnerving, mainly due to a certain fear that I have...lol. This book offered me everything I fully expected it to. I recommend this, not only to fan's of Tim Curran, but to fans of sci-fi/horror in the first place. You will not be sorry that you picked this up.
