I'm guessing what brought the end of the world as we know it might be some kind of zombies. Yes, I said might because although the story is very dark and we can feel something is looming over the characters, we don't hear much about 'them': them, the things that go out at night, the things that scares the little group so much. I think that's what makes this short fun: it's different.A quick read with an unexpected ending. I didn't expect less from Mr. Hash.(Warning: I had originally mixed up this book with another one in the series I haven't read yet. I deleted my review from the other book and posted it where it truly belonged. I apologize for any inconvenience my mistake could have brought. )

McMullen Again, Hash sets us down in the middle of his dark and hopeless apocalypse, this time giving us an intimate view of a different kind of monster. Of what happens when the foundation of all our beliefs are turned end over end. Yet another aptly named installment of this madness. I await more.

The year is 1942 In the dark, early-morning hours of November 8th, an armada larger and mightier than ever before assembled and took up positions at points off the coast of North-West Africa. Its mission was to launch Operation Torch, the first massive Allied offensive operation of World War Two. This is the story of the most crucial campaigns of World War Two. It is an account of Operation Torch and of the start of the process that led to the destruction of Adolf Hitler’s Third Reich. Torch — the Allied invasion and conquest of North Africa — was an intricate enterprise. More than five hundred American and British warships, supply vessels, and troop transports were taking part. It involved political intrigue, espionage, conspiracy, a massive disinformation campaign, a muddled coup d’état, the most momentous amphibious assault ever undertaken until then, and the transformation of half-trained, pummelled troops into victorious warriors. Norman Gelb masterfully weaves these various elements into an absorbing account of an historic moment. He describes how the Allies, their military prospects grim early in the war, agonised on how and where to expend their still slender resources on their first major offensive operation; how Winston Churchill 'hijacked’ the direction of Allied strategy from America’s generals who wanted to fight the war a different way; how Eisenhower, the Torch supreme commander, was often out of his depth but nevertheless forged an effective, harmonious Anglo-American military alliance; how the attitudes of Vichy France and Franco’s Spain distorted invasion calculations; how arch rivals Montgomery and Rommel influenced the course of events; and how, finally, for better or worse, Operation Torch determined the Allied strategy for most of the rest of the war. A senior American diplomat has called Operation Torch the most important decision made in the struggle against Hitler. Desperate Venture shows how and why in a meticulously researched and highly detailed narrative account of one of the most crucial operations in World War Two.  NORMAN GELB was born in New York and is the author of seven highly acclaimed books, including The Berlin Wall, Scramble: A Narrative History of the Battle of Britain, and Less Than Glory. He was, for many years, correspondent for the Mutual Broadcasting System, first in Berlin and then in London. He is currently the London correspondent for New Leader magazine. Desperate Venture, by Norman Gelb

From Publishers Weekly Operation Torch, the 1942 Allied invasion of North Africa, was the first major Allied offensive of WW II. Gen. Eisenhower, the overall commander, had grave misgivings about the undertaking, fearing the resistance of Vichy French troops ashore to the Anglo-American landings. As things transpired, the Vichy navy nearly ruined the U.S. landings near Casablanca, but the French capitulated within a week. The victorious Allies then turned eastward to try conclusions with Gen. Erwin Rommel and his formidable Afrika Korps in Tunisia. Gelb ( Dunkirk ) has much of interest to say about the thorny interplay between the British and American high commands and the even more difficult relations between Eisenhower and the French leaders (whom he privately called "little, selfish conceited worms"). The GIs in the field failed to win much glory in the North African campaign (one British general dismissed them as "merely a nuisance"), but, as Gelb points out, it was a superb training ground for the subsequent invasion of Sicily. A well-balanced look at one of the most important but often ignored campaigns of WW II. Photos. First serial to Quarterly Journal of Military History. Copyright 1992 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Library Journal The Allies were being beaten on every front in 1942, yet in November the Americans and British invaded French North Africa. Neither the objectives nor even the necessity of Operation Torch were clear: the Americans wanted to win the war in the Pacific first, but Churchill persuaded Roosevelt that the European theater must take precedence. The invasion troops were raw, their leaders inexperienced, and supplies limited. North Africa was finally conquered after a bitter six-month campaign during which the Americans suffered a humiliating defeat at Kasserine Pass. There are many books on the complicated tangle of politics, personalities, and military operations that constitutes Operation Torch, and most only serve to confuse the reader. Gelb ( Dunkirk , LJ 8/89) has succeeded in making the campaign understandable to the lay reader, but it remains a complicated tangle. For libraries with extensive World War II collections.- Stanley Itkin, Hillside P.L., New Hyde Park, N.Y.Copyright 1992 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Kirkus Reviews For the 50th anniversary of one of WW II's pivotal campaigns, Gelb (Dunkirk, 1989, etc.) skillfully recounts the Allied invasion of North Africa, which--while itself of inherent strategic importance--became primarily significant as a testing ground for the fragile Anglo-American alliance. Operation Torch represented a compromise between British and American strategies for defeating Hitler. Gelb explains how the British--responding to setbacks early in the war--developed a strategy of engaging the Germans in peripheral conflicts in an effort to encircle and enervate the Nazi war machine, while the Americans sought an early invasion of Europe. Although Gelb questions the wisdom of the American decision to acquiesce to the British strategy--he theorizes that the more oblique approach may have unnecessarily prolonged the war--he shows that Operation Torch forged a firm alliance between British and American officers and gave the Allies a chance to develop skills in airborne and amphibious warfare and in intelligence techniques and land tactics- -skills that proved useful in the later invasions of Italy and France. Gelb also amply demonstrates the importance of interpersonal relationships to the success of the Allied cause. While relationships between British and American officers were tense at times--some Britons, such as Montgomery, viewed the Americans as militarily inept, while some Americans, such as Patton, saw the British as duplicitous--the presence of diplomatic personalities (like those of Roosevelt, Churchill, and Eisenhower) in key positions ensured the smooth functioning of the alliance. Engaging and well-researched. (Sixteen pages of b&w photos and two maps--not seen.) -- Copyright ©1992, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.

It does not give the guts-level, tactical insight which many readers enjoy, but it gives the political background and the war-time situations from which decisions were made. I enjoyed it, from a strategic and intellectual perspective, and having read works by Norman Gelb before, had some insight into what it was going to be. 'Thoroughly enjoyed it. 'Recommend it to the strategic-minded reader.

I didn't think I would enjoy that, but the author made it work! I enjoyed Luk and Keira story; not as much as Nik and Emma, but it was still great! I am looking forward to more in this series! Check out my full review here: http://www.thebookdisciple.com

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. I enjoyed this book By Megan Kyle I enjoyed this book! If you are looking for a sweet vampire mating, then this is not your book. This book is kind of dark. I will be honest and tell you guys that I didn't read the first book. It wouldn't let me buy it on amazon for some reason? I have no clue but I read this one anyways. Even though it's not the first book.. I really didn't get lost. I am sad that I don't know all of Nikulas and Emma's story but I know how it ended so that will just have to be good enough for me.In this book we have Luukas (side note: I love how his name is spelled) who has been in captivity for 7 years. He has been stripped of his master vampire powers and has been repeatedly tortured and denied of blood. We find out that Keira is the witch who has made all of this possible. She took his powers and helped the evil vampire Leeha. But Keira didn't want to do any of those things. She was blackmailed into doing them and in the end she tries to help Luukas as much as she can. But when rescue comes Luukas is half crazed and tries to kill her.. but he can't because she is his.Through out the book Luukas is struggling with a darkness in his mind. He goes back and forth on wether he should kill Keira or not and he does not believe in the fated mate fairytale. He tries everything he can think of to prove that it isn't true. This is the only real issue I have with the book. I know he was struggling with insanity but I hated that he constantly thought about killing her and how once his mind was better he would be done with her.... it just formed a negative opinion for him in my mind. There was one point in the book.. well I really can't tell you with out giving things away but he almost let her die when he could have saved her from all her suffering. I tried really hard to look at things from his perspective but it was hard for me because he didn't start to treat her well until the last chapter of the book.I am really excited to get into Blood Obsession and see what is going on with Aiden!

I was really happy to learn that this was Luukas and Kiera's book. We meet them both in book 1 and I will say that if you haven't read it stop now and go read it.. These need to be read in order. Luukas is the Master Vampire and was held prisoner for 7 years and while he was held there, Keira was also. The difference is Keira is a witch that the evil-*itch has captured in order to keep Luukas and she makes her cast spells on him that help torture him. Now mind you Keira didn't want to do those things but because Leehan threatened her sister, Emma (from book 1), she must do it to keep her safe. Now fast forward to them being found by Nik (Luukas's brother and Emma's mate again from book 1) so they are free but having to deal with a lot of issues. Luukas is having trouble reconciling the fact that Keira helped them torture him (even if it wasn't by choice) but yet while he wants to kill her he also has this insane need to keep her safe. He never believed in mates before and doesn't now either, however that is something he will wrestle with the whole book. I really liked how the author shows us from many different perspectives. It shows us not just how Luukas and Keira are feeling and thinking but also a few others. I will say that even though I enjoyed seeing it from so many different povs, it did get a little confusing at times to switch from one to another to another. However, it did not take away from the book. I am very invested in these characters and this storyline and can not wait to find out what is going to happen next!! Great job on book 2! A copy was given in exchange for an honest review. This was a 4.5 AMAZEBALLS stars for me!!Review by Tabitha

Published to mark three decades of his artistic activity, this collection contains approximately 100 works selected by Yoshitomo Nara himself, including new drawings. Most of his works depict a single, seemingly innocuous subject, often large-eyed children or stylised animals drawn with confident, cartoonish lines. The looks that characterise many of his child-like subjects are especially peculiar, appearing at once mischievous, irritated, or accusatory. Others simply seem benign, patiently waiting until the observer moves on to the next one. This compilation of works on paper is undoubtedly an essential volume for Naras devout fans, as well as newcomers to his work.

"Without light, there can be no knowing."Jarrett Yawp thought he could "control the light." But he soon discovers that being a successful projectionist, the master manipulator of fantasy and reality behind the immersive new art form of the HoloPlay, means being able to comprehend-and control-far more than the simple reality in front of you. What constitutes art in our ever-evolving consumer culture? How much control do we really exert over our own fates? Is time travel a scientific possibility? Der Filmvorführer (The Projectionist), the third novel from Frederick Barrows, poses these and other intriguing questions, while taking the reader on a whirlwind tour of some of the more obscure corners of film history.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Very original content. By Gorilichis I received a free copy from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you, Lone Argonaut! This is a really hard book to describe. Set in the not so distant future, Jarrett starts working at the HoloPlex. There, he tries to get to know a successful and mysterious projectionist who turns classic films into HoloPlays. This new system immerses the viewers in movies and allows them to interact with the characters and, within limits, change the storyline. This book made me think. I'd love to be in Casablanca but would I dare ask Sam to play the latest single from One Direction? To what degree can we alter art without making it lose its value? Would the characters react by themselves? And this is just what I, an enthusiastic movie lover, got from the heavy philosophical issues put forth by the author. There are discussions on science, light, consciousness and even heaven. Sometimes it can be a little too much, especially if you don't really care about the subjects being discussed. The story breathes and evolves nicely; even if some plot points seemed to amount to nothing in the end. This is a deeply original book with very smart ideas, for readers who want to think.

It's a still, hot summer in Perth, Australia. The heat is shimmering off the city's glass buildings, with not much to do but surrender to the cool of Beatty Park's swimming pool. However, something is moving amid all the stillness - a hidden snake sliding through shadows. It's moving through lives and connecting them with its sonar trembles: Auntie, in town with Jerome to find the kid's runaway mum; Kevin, tired of his bus route, dealing with raucous kids and bottlenecks and a city that seems to be growing hostile; Karri and his other-worldly sister Bat Girl; Jackie and her sisters, sharing smokes by the pool. In this exquisite, lyrical verse novel by acclaimed playwright Christine Evans, readers will witness the strange and invisible ways people are drawn together and pulled apart - and to venture to the catastrophic release that might ultimately return them home. *** Librarians: ebook available on ProQuest and EBSCO [Subject: Poetry, Literature]

I am buying copies for all my friends as stocking stuffers this winter. Looking forward to reading whatever she writes next. Hard to believe that this is her first work of non-theatrical fiction.

LOVED "CLOUDLESS" - Imaginative and beautifully constructed By virginia LOVED "CLOUDLESS" - Imaginative and beautifully constructed, yet flowing - rides on its own music. Metaphors to stop your heart and similes which catch your breath. After becoming accustomed to the format - in about 2 pages - I forgot the "verse" aspect, as the imagery and plot are so well interlaced that it felt like the story was guiding my breath. Powerful social meanings, elegantly developed.

The magical realism allows easy access into other lives, and the beautifully evocative language took me straight back to my own youthful times at Beatty Park

This vintage book has been found with original illustrations and has been digitally edited and converted to downloadable format. A great classic for the home or classroom, an interesting old-fashioned reference book, and an outstanding find. FOREWORD from Book: The loyalty of Pocahontas, the patriotism of Molly Pitcher and Dorothy Quincy, the devoted service of Clara Barton, the heroism of Ida Lewis, the enthusiasm of Anna Dickinson, the fine work of Louisa Alcott—all challenge the emulation of American girls of to-day. Citizen-soldiers on a field of service as wide as the world, young America has at this hour of national crisis its chance to win recognition for fidelity, for bravery, and for loyal service, with victory for American ideals as its golden reward, in a world "made safe for democracy." My first aim in bringing the lives of these ten American girls from history to the attention of the girls of to-day has been to inspire them to like deeds of patriotism and courage. Second only to that purpose is a desire to make young Americans realize as they read these true stories of achievement along such widely varying lines of work, that history is more thrilling than fiction, and that if they will turn from these short sketches to the longer biographies from which the facts of these stories have been taken, they will find interesting and absorbing reading. May the book accomplish its twofold object, and so justify its publication at this time of the testing of all true Americans.

The next button on Kindle does not go to next character, but these stories were really amazing- except the last two, didn't care for those as much, bu tI loved learning about Clara Barton, Virginia, and the others. It was fairly well written and easy to follow, and no one can ask for a better price! Only format is a little lacking.

“Called On may be this generation’s One L...” — Tony Mauro, The National Law Journal

Libby Behl and Connie Shun are both at Warren Law because they want to make the world better. First-year student Libby’s got a lot to learn about law — not to mention love, long nights, and low-grade coffee. Through a difficult year, her professor Connie starts to question what she knows about how law — and justice — work. Witty and insightful, Called On is an insider’s peek into the struggles of learning law and the satisfaction of finding a new path in life.

“McElroy perfectly captures the pressures, challenges, and triumphs of both teaching and studying the law. Filled with big, memorable personalities, Called On is an utterly charming depiction of the 1L experience.” — Alafair Burke, author, The Ex

“In Called On, McElroy deftly chronicles the stories of law professor Connie Shun and first year law student Libby Behl, each of whom is trying to move past tragedy and forge a new path for herself. The intersection of their lives is both humorous and heartbreaking. In this thoughtful and thought-provoking commentary on life, love, and the law, McElroy demonstrates the rare gift to simultaneously entertain, educate, uplift, and inspire.” — Pam Jenoff, author, The Kommandant’s Girl

“Lisa McElroy nails law school—from first-day jitters to gunners and back-benchers—in a funny, perceptive, and poignant (but never predictable) first novel. Grab a Diet Coke and a handful of M&Ms and settle in; once you start reading, you won't want to stop.” — Amy Howe, co-founder & editor, SCOTUSblog

“This remarkable book showcases all the traits that make McElroy such an amazing teacher: a deep understanding of legal issues, a superb ability to connect them to the real world, and a wry, compassionate understanding of her fellow humans in all their flawed splendor. Plus, she can flat-out tell a story. If you never made it to law school — and even if you never wanted to — don’t miss the chance to get Called On.” — Kermit Roosevelt, author, Allegiance and In the Shadow of the Law

“McElroy has provided us with a fresh and modern take on life in law school. The story is told through the eyes of an idealist, who enters law school with the best of intentions only to find that law can be as messy as love. This book is a must read for anyone thinking about taking the plunge into law school.” — Shon Hopwood, author, Law Man

“I didn't go to law school, but author Lisa McElroy did, and that's a great thing for readers of fiction. McElroy uses her personal experience as both a law student and law professor to create a world of high stakes studies, complex personal relationships, and meaningful discussions of themes like liberty and justice. Called On is a complete first novel, expertly conceived and skillfully written. Memorable, vivid, and true — the story of two women, one student and one prof, who find themselves in the law.” — Lian Dolan, author, Helen of Pasadena and Elizabeth the First Wife

“Called On may be this generation’s One L, narrating the modern law school experience with all its stress, cut-throat competitiveness, inflated egos, flaws, and triumphs. Early on, the main character observes, ‘From what I hear, law school is full of surprises.’ McElroy turns that into an understatement, with plot twists that make Called On a true page-turner. Anyone who has been to law school, teaches there, or knows lawyers will instantly recognize one or more of McElroy’s vivid characters.” — Tony Mauro, Supreme Court Correspondent, The National Law Journal

The first publication of the Barnes Foundation’s important and extensive African art collection. The Barnes Foundation is renowned for its astonishing collection of Postimpressionist and early Modern art assembled by Albert C. Barnes, a Philadelphia pharmaceutical entrepreneur. Less known is the pioneering collection of African sculpture that Barnes acquired between 1922 and 1924, mainly from Paul Guillaume, the Paris-based dealer. The Barnes Foundation was one of the first permanent installations in the United States to present objects from Africa as fine art. Indeed, the African collection is central to understanding Barnes’s socially progressive vision for his foundation. This comprehensive volume showcases all 123 objects, including reliquary figures, masks, and utensils, most of which originated in France’s African colonies—Mali, Côte d’Ivoire, Gabon, and the Congo—as well as in Sierra Leone, Republic of Benin, and Nigeria. Christa Clarke considers the significance of the collection and Barnes’s role in the Harlem Renaissance and in fostering broader appreciation of African art in the twentieth century. In-depth catalog entries by noted scholars in the field complete the volume.

Review "African Art in the Barnes Foundation features detailed catalogue entries by preeminent scholars in African studies and art history, completing a monograph that will long serve as an important resource in the field."-ArtDaily.com"When you hear the Barnes Foundation in Philadelphia, you think Matisse and Renoir, but Albert Barnes also collected African sculpture, and was one of the first Americans to display it as art, not ethnography. What he collected, and how, and why, are the subjects of African Art in the Barnes Foundation, which is also a catalog of the collection." -THE NEW YORK TIMES

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Another action-packed journey with Radovan and Jeggare By Amber Scott Jeggare and Radovan are back in style in this action-packed and engaging book. I was able to read an advance copy and enjoyed the book tremendously. The setup seems simple at first: Jeggare receives a book as part of an old colleague's estate. But the book has many magical secrets, and as Jeggare explores its nature (with Radovan naturally at his side), he becomes exposed to its dangerous energies. Something this powerful can't be contained or shut away, and the heroes are forced into a journey full of adventure. Some new allies (the smart and sinister Lady Illyria, for one) accompany them, and some familiar faces (whom I won't spoil) are met along the way.LORD OF RUNES is more than your standard fantasy fare. Radovan and Jeggare's enemy has strong links to the mythology of Golarion, the world of Pathfinder, and these links help create the deep, immersive world of the book. Everyone has reasons behind their actions that tie into the history of the world, making the characters come to life on the page.Like the other novels featuring Radovan and Jeggare, LORD OF RUNES stands on its own. Gross has the knack of weaving in exposition as needed so that new readers can keep up with the characters without feeling like they've missed something. Readers familiar with the pair will love this new story and the chance to travel once more alongside Radovan, Jeggare, and the faithful Arnisant.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Another action packed Radovan and Varian adventure By Joel Flank The fifth Radovan and Varian book sees the duo visit the city of Korvosa, where Varian tries to find out why the local wizard's college, the Acadamae never told him he was a sorcerer and not a wizard, after learning that his decades of frustration at not being to cast spells was revealed to be because he wasn't a wizard after all. Once there, he finds himself drawn into a mystery surrounding the death of an old colleague and a dangerous magical tome. As he investigates, he's drawn into events involving far more than mysterious tome, with ties to some of the most ancient and powerful wizards ever to walk the face of Golarion.Radovan provides his usual counterpoint to Varian's refined and intellectual point of view, and their almost opposite natures continues to cement their strong friendship, despite clashes over the book's growing influence over Varian. Along the way, they finally encounter something Radovan's devilish good looks and charm can't handle: more ladies than he can possible juggle at once. Lord of Runes introduces a large cast of new characters who prove more than capable of holding their own against the strong personalities of Radovan and Varian and are a welcome addition to their "social circle". There's also a few characters who are old rather than new, with cameos and major roles for some of the earliest characters from the Pathfinder game world, and sure to delight fans of the game. Their inclusion doesn't in any way detract from the self contained nature of the story in the novel, however, so readers who have never played Pathfinder won't find themselves lost. In addition to full fledged characters who appear in the book, there's a good number of references and Easter eggs throughout the book about other events in the gameworld, which adds some fun depth to the setting, similar to how the interconnected Marvel TV and movie universe gives shout outs to events occurring in other stories. In addition to providing an action packed fantasy adventure, Lord of Runes deeply explores the depths of Varian's history and personality, as well as the strength of his relationship with Radovan. By the book's end, things are irrevocably changed between them. As always, I'm looking forward to the next installment of the series to see where things go next (though after using Prince, Master, Queen, King, and Lord, I wonder if Dave is running out of first words that are ranks of social station for titles. Maybe Jack of ____ or Emperor of _____ next?)

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. The past can come back to haunt them By Anime Lover The great duo is back and up for a new adventure. As the death of a close friend brings a mystery and a curse of the Runelord or Gluttony strikes, Radovan and Varisan must join new allies in a lesson that even knowledge can be dangerous and that ones past can come back to haunt them, even several generations gone. The story is amazing with the usual switching between views, new allies bring in a new perspective and an interest in a certain Cheliax count. I must for all fans

The Bravest Cowboy

Some of the best cowboy songs were recorded by southern musicians in the 1930s and '40s. This one we learned from the legendary North Carolina fiddler, Tommy jarrell.

I am the bravest cowboy that ever roamed the West. I been all over the Rockies, I got bullets in my breast.

In eighteen hundred and sixty three I joined the immigrant band. We marched from San Antonio Down by the Rio Grande. When I was on the prairie I learned to toe the line, I learned to pocket money, But I did not dress much fine.

When I was on the prairie I learned to rob and steal, and When I robbed that cowboy How happy I did feel.

I wore a broad brimmed white hat And my saddle too was fine, And when I'd court them pretty girls You bet I called 'em mine.

I courted her for beauty, But for love it was in vain, 'Cuz they carried me down to Dallas To wear the ball and chain.

Ladiges I ordered Old Time Cowboy Songs to see the original keys and progressions in a simple pure form. I was delighted to find out each song contains interesting facts as to the origins and circumstances leading up to writing the song down. For campfire sing-alongs or swapping western songs with friends or finding out the story behind theballads this book is a must.I am going to say the only thing that would be better is if the author had updated cd format availablity. There is an address included to order cassette tapes.

Great book but small format By Doug Cook This is a great book of cowboy songs, HOWEVER I failed to note when I purchased it that it is in a tiny "paperback" size. My old eyes are not good enough to play directly from the book. I need to enlarge the pages or rewrite them.

WARNING: THIS IS AN EXTREME HORROR NOVELLA. Although not as bad as some of Matt Shaw's other titles, there is still gore. There is bad language. There are scenes of a sexual nature. But hidden underneath it all is also a chilling story. Please do not purchase this book if you are easily shocked, disgusted or offended. This book is not for you. A throwback to the video nasties of the seventies, ASHES tells the story of a group of friends who go on a beach holiday with disastrous consequences. Please note: This is NOT as extreme as some Black Cover Books but there are some shocking scenes which may cause offence and disgust.

I’ve seen plenty of them with just a black cover and a disclaimer on the front. I know it’s a marketing ploy but it had me intrigued to sample his work. What forbidden delights might be housed inside? So, I bought ASHES which doesn’t actually have one of those covers daring you to read it, but the book had gore and cannibalism in the title, so call me an old romantic, but I chose that one.Four twenty-somethings, Jack, Stuart, Corinna, and Holly are on holiday at an all-inclusive resort on a remote volcanic island, looking for a calm and relaxing vacation. Well, except for the adrenalin junkie, Jack, who convinces them to leave the resort for a day of exploring. As you might imagine, this is a terrible idea. The group runs into some native tribesmen and an homage to the Italian cannibal films of the eighties unfolds. You’ll definitely see some Cannibal Holocaust references. The characters are great and you get pulled into their complicated relationships among each other. Stuart is the most likeable of the men. Jack is uniformly a selfish so and so throughout and if anyone has it coming it’s him. Maybe that’s a bit harsh. I don’t think anyone has this kind of cruelty coming. One of my favorite aspects of the book is the interplay between flashbacks tying the present situation to one in the past. It could be with a sentence or an action, but it’s very cleverly done and repeated throughout to great effect. It’s plenty gory and, as the title suggests, there is cannibalism. The dramatic disclaimer on the book is not altogether unwarranted. All in all, this is a fun ride and an homage to the cannibal films of yesteryear. You get what you’d expect and that’s what I was looking for with this book. If cannibals are your thing, also be sure to check out Adam Cesare’s Tribesman.

With Ashes, if you have a weak stomach, just don't.This book is the tale of 4 friends on vacation who decide to take a trip off the grid. They don't find the white sand beaches they were promised, instead they find something more sinister. Something primal. Something that they couldn't have imagined would happen so close to their resort. For fans of Matt, pick this up. Loss of one star because I felt like there was a little disconnect in how all the pieces fit together.4 stars for gore, violence and a book sure to make you want to stay home.

Wonderfully Disgusting By Dawnzilla Ashes is one of those stories I had to finish in one sitting, which is saying a lot since I have the attention span of a fly. It contains everything I've come to expect from a Matt Shaw book: well-developed characters, an intriguing story, and enough cannibalism and gore to keep the finickiest extreme horror fan happy. The story bounces around a bit, but isn't hard to keep up with, if you're paying attention. This story reminded me of 70's horror flicks, which was a nice change of pace from other novels.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. The plot thickens By E. Foley The plot thickens a bit, as it should in a 3-part novella.Olivia's dad is recovering, and she gets her act together enough to force a paternity test that Sophie's been trying to avoid since "it's the holidays".O finds out that Marissa's preggo, Ginger and Gavin are having fun together (so far) and we meet Jason King. And, interestingly enough the lab that's conducting the paternity test has been vandalized and the samples compromised. Hmmm.. Convenient. The descriptions of Jason are over the top outlandish.Writing and dialogue aren't anything special and O&C hump like rabbits so it is a surprise that she's still not preggo.

Things are starting to get crazy and people are stirring up the drama. The introduction of Jason has me dying to read his story because HOLY SWOON! Review MAIL ON SUNDAY NOVEL OF THE WEEK 'A compelling read, with a constantly evolving plot that kept me hooked to the end, as well as a vivid, detailed and funny picture of the life of two modern families.' - William Nicholson 'Lizzie Enfield has a great talent for mirroring all our lives through those small moments that make up a whole. Her writing reminds me of Anne Tyler's wonderful forensic style in which ordinary details are used to create extraordinary stories.' - Araminta Hall 'Living With It is a brilliant evocation of emotional turmoil. Lizzie Enfield vividly portrays the parental dilemmas, moral complexities and potentially tragic consequences of the MMR controversy. Gripping and thought provoking.' - James LeFanu 'Lizzie Enfield is a writer with a gift for conveying the intricacies and subtleties of relationships between family and friends. Her dialogue is perfectly pitched, and her storytelling thought-provoking and nuanced. Living With It explores an emotive issue with insight and care.' - Sarah Rayner 'A compulsively readable what-if story... Enfield brilliantly conveys how claustrophobic and trapped the four main characters feel as events spiral out of control... A surprising page-turner with an extraordinarily haunting conclusion.' - Mail on Sunday

About the Author Lizzie Enfield is a journalist and the author of two previous novels, What You Don't Know and Uncoupled. Her short stories have been broadcast on BBC Radio 4 and published in various magazines, and her articles regularly appear in newspapers.

Reading it was time well spent (expect a little twist in the tale to add to the treat) By Reader Once I started reading I really wanted to find out what happened next and couldn't put it down. Cast of personalities were so well formed that I had a strong sense of them. Also what a great premiss for a book - good to get a few heated debates started. Plus a little twist in the tale as a treat at the end
