A breakthrough in scientific, metaphysical and philosophical knowledge, this book - in light of the hypothesis that matter and consciousness are strictly connected into a single unity - presents an entirely new theory about the way in which information is non-locally propagated through an intelligent Universe and the way in which matter is created by consciousness. Quantum entanglement, synchronicity, multidimensionality, extra¬terrestrial intelligence, and the true nature of what we call "spirituality" are revisited within a completely revolutionary framework mainly based on new physics, whose goal is to make people think about the world, themselves, the Universe and the true meaning of life, and to trigger scientists of the new millennium towards a more complete understanding of the reality in which we are all immersed. Massimo Teodorani, Ph.D., is a well-known northern Italian physical scientist and science writer and lecturer, who has carried out professional research in several fields of stellar astrophysics, and with a particular interest for the scientific search for extraterrestrial intelligence and the rigorous study of atmospheric anomalies occurring in Nature.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. preceded by an excellent introduction to quantum mechanics and its interpretations By Amazon Customer A truly thought-provoking book. I can see a lot of physical science in it, preceded by an excellent introduction to quantum mechanics and its interpretations. All over the book I can read a somewhat brave but logically coherent and wide-ranging speculation about the way in which information is non-locally propagated all over the Universe. It makes sense! An Universe without consciousness would make no sense. I was very impressed by the description of the role of the “spirit/soul” (as part of the mechanism of evolution of life), which this author considers as a mere biophysical parameter like all the others. And also he treats in-depth other very “hot” topics such as synchronicity, extraterrestrial intelligence and anomalous atmospheric phenomena. My impression is that the author, a physical scientist, knows much more than he writes, in this book. He speaks about heterodox and sometimes metaphysical subjects, which no scientist would never dare to do, using a cold academic mood, and the conclusions are shocking indeed. This book, which has the potential to trigger the brightest minds, is certainly a book to read.

A genuine literary event—an illuminating collection of correspondence from one of the most acclaimed American writers of all time  Over the course of a nearly sixty-year career, Norman Mailer wrote more than 30 novels, essay collections, and nonfiction books. Yet nowhere was he more prolific—or more exposed—than in his letters. All told, Mailer crafted more than 45,000 pieces of correspondence (approximately 20 million words), many of them deeply personal, keeping a copy of almost every one. Now the best of these are published—most for the first time—in one remarkable volume that spans seven decades and, it seems, several lifetimes. Together they form a stunning autobiographical portrait of one of the most original, provocative, and outspoken public intellectuals of the twentieth century.   Compiled by Mailer’s authorized biographer, J. Michael Lennon, and organized by decade, Selected Letters of Norman Mailer features the most fascinating of Mailer’s missives from 1940 to 2007—letters to his family and friends, to fans and fellow writers (including Truman Capote, James Baldwin, and Philip Roth), to political figures from Henry Kissinger to Bill and Hillary Clinton, and to such cultural icons as John Lennon, Marlon Brando, and even Monica Lewinsky.   Here is Mailer the precocious Harvard undergraduate, writing home to his parents for the first time and worrying that his acceptances by literary magazines were “all happening too easy.” Here, too, is Mailer the soldier, confronting the violence of war in the Pacific, which would become the subject of his masterly debut novel, The Naked and the Dead: “[I’m] amazed how casually it fits into . . . daily life, how very unhorrible it all is.” Mailer the international celebrity pledges to William Styron, “I’m going to write every day, and like Lot’s Wife I’m consigning myself to a pillar of salt if I dare to look back,” while the 1980s Mailer agonizes over the fallout from his ill-fated friendship with Jack Henry Abbott, the murderer who became his literary protégé. (“The continuation of our relationship was depressing for both of us,” he confesses to Joyce Carol Oates.) At last, he finds domestic—and erotic—bliss in the arms of his sixth wife, Norris Church (“We bounce into each other like sunlight”).   Whether he is reflecting on the Kennedy assassination, assessing the merits of authors from Fitzgerald to Proust, or threatening to pummel William Styron, the brilliant, pugnacious Norman Mailer comes alive again in these letters. The myriad faces of this artist and activist, lover and fighter, public figure and private man, are laid bare in this collection as never before.Praise for Selected Letters of Norman Mailer  “Extraordinary.”—Vanity Fair“As massive as the life they document . . . the autobiography [Mailer] never wrote . . . a kind of map, from the hills and rice paddies of the Philippines through every victory and defeat for the rest of the century and beyond.”—Esquire “The shards and winks at Mailer’s own past that are scattered throughout the letters . . . are so tantalizing. They glitter throughout like unrefined jewels that Mailer took to the grave.”—The New Yorker   “Indispensable . . . a subtle document of an unsubtle man’s wit and erudition, even (or especially) when it’s wielded as a weapon.”—New York   “Umpteen pleasures to pluck out and roll between your teeth, like seeds from a pomegranate.”—The New York TimesFrom the Hardcover edition.

Selected Letters of Norman Mailer, by Norman Mailer

Review “Extraordinary.”—Vanity Fair “As massive as the life they document . . . In reading Mailer’s correspondence as the autobiography he never wrote, these [letters] provide a kind of map, from the hills and rice paddies of the Philippines through every victory and defeat for the rest of the century and beyond.”—Esquire   “The shards and winks at Mailer’s own past that are scattered throughout the letters—the stories of friendships and of family, of his identity-forming relationship with his mother and his ‘Victorian childhood’ surrounded by loving women, of his street-corner adolescence and his erotic and literary awakening . . . are so tantalizing. They glitter throughout like unrefined jewels that Mailer took to the grave.”—The New Yorker   “[Selected Letters of Norman Mailer has] umpteen pleasures to pluck out and roll between your teeth, like seeds from a pomegranate.”—The New York Times   “Indispensable . . . a subtle document of an unsubtle man’s wit and erudition, even (or especially) when it’s wielded as a weapon.”—New York  “A thrilling and revealing collection of correspondence . . . With their unguarded directness, the letters allow us access to [Mailer’s] naked thought. . . . providing the asides and stage whispers that shape the life and career into a compelling theatre of the creative self.”—The Guardian (U.K.)“Mailer’s correspondence offers an intimate look at the author in all his variety: filial, pugnacious, collegial, spiteful, affectionate, defiant and generous by turn.”—BBC   “[A] meticulously edited collection of letters . . . It’s hard to imagine any American novelist today living as large, varied, and morally complex a life as Mailer’s. And among the emotions these letters may evoke in readers is nostalgia for a time when an American writer could imagine—somewhat innocently perhaps—that his words were an essential part of the national conversation.”—The Daily Beast   “[Norman Mailer] contained multitudes. . . . The preponderant majority of letters here are by the private Mailer who could be remarkably tender, courtly, generous, sensitive, eloquent and brilliant and, for good measure, equally block-headed, arrogant, naive and blinded by self-delusion. . . . It’s what makes this, far and away, the most important and compelling book by or about Norman Mailer in decades.”—The Buffalo News“Norman Mailer lived large. So it’s no surprise his correspondents included just about everyone who was anyone in twentieth-century America, and why Selected Letters of Norman Mailer is such a scintillating read.”—WBUR“Mailer’s ambition to be the greatest writer of his generation is made clear in his stylish, sophisticated letters. . . . A list of Mailer’s correspondents reads like a guide to twentieth-century history and literature. . . . [Michael J.] Lennon proves an ideal guide, expertly assembling a tidal wave of letters into a tidy, chronological selection. In the end, Mailer’s letters stand as the best autobiography available for such a complicated and extraordinary life.”—Publishers Weekly (starred review)“Offers the fascinating complexities of a deeply intelligent individual.”—Booklist“An intriguing look at a particularly influential life of letters and a treat for Mailer fans.”—Kirkus Reviews“Mailer’s letters reinforce the idea that Mailer himself was his most complex creation: the blithely gargantuan demands of his imagination shaped his life was well as his fiction and journalism.”—The Arts FuseFrom the Hardcover edition.

All rights reserved. 1940sNorman Kingsley Mailer, born in 1923 to immigrant parents, had written a fair amount of juvenilia, mainly adventure stories, from the ages of eight to twelve, then nothing more until he arrived at Harvard in September 1939. In each of his four college years, he signed up for elective writing courses, and he wrote, all told, approximately thirty short stories. He published three of these in the Harvard Advocate, and one of them, “The Greatest Thing in the World,” won a national college contest sponsored by Story Magazine, where it appeared in November 1941. A few months earlier, he had completed the manuscript of his first novel, “No Percentage.” Set in two places he knew well, Brooklyn and the Jersey Shore, the novel (still unpublished) ends with a hitchhiking trip to North Carolina, one that Mailer made in the summer of 1941. Just after the Pearl Harbor attack, he met Beatrice Silverman, a student at Boston University, who later became his first wife. In the summer of 1942, he worked for a week as an orderly at Boston Mental Hospital and wrote a play, titled “The Naked and the Dead,” about the sadistic treatment of the inmates. It has never been performed, but it created a lifelong interest in drama. In his senior year, he began another novel, A Transit to Narcissus (published in 1978), also inspired by his experience as an orderly, which he finished shortly before his March 1944 induction into the army. While he was in the service, a combat novella he wrote at Harvard, “A Calculus at Heaven,” was published in an anthology, but his most important work of the 1940s was The Naked and the Dead, which he wrote after his discharge in May 1946. Based on his experience during the Luzon campaign of early 1945, in the Philippines, the novel was critically acclaimed and became an immediate bestseller after its publication in May 1948. Slabs of it were taken wholesale from the hundreds of letters he wrote to Beatrice while overseas.1. To Fanny and I. B. MailerGrays Hall 11-12, Harvard CollegeFebruary 18, 1940Dear Folks,I’m quite the busy boy now with tryouts for the Advocate & Red Book. I’ve dropped the Lampoon because 1) I can’t write humorously, 2) there is a $100 initiation fee. All of which brings me to the Advocate. I tried out last Friday and had a nice time, you know free beer, etc. For the Advocate you have to submit 3 pieces worthy of publication although not necessarily published for lack of space. You also have to sell 10 subscriptions and pay an initiation fee of $40.00. Now the Advocate is like a club, and has many fellows worth meeting. (One of them is Bruce Barton Jr., representative’s son.) If you think I should or should not go on with it let me know. It means spending at least $50—subscriptions bought personally—of which $40 would only be spent after getting in so the money would not be risked. If you feel it is not worth it from a money standpoint let me know immediately. (Let me know immediately, too if you think it is worth it.) Naturally it is up to you, and do as you see right. Of course it’s not a matter of buying your way in since you have to be good to be accepted & it is quite an honor. However if I know I can’t make it because the initiation fee is too high, I don’t want to put in any work on it. If you don’t understand fully what I’m talking about write your answer anyway with the necessary reservations. I’ll know what to do since of course I know just what the odds are.Nothing much else right now.Lots of love,NormanP.S. I’m sorry. The Advocate is the literary magazine.P.P.S. Tell Babby to keep up the good work.P.P.P.S. Hope the cold spell helps the [heating oil] business.P.P.P.P.S. Was happy to hear about your anniversary party. Cake hasn’t come yet, but I’ll thank Aunt Nan for it anyway. Don’t undeceive her.P.P.P.P.P.S. Fill in the financial blanks for the scholarship soon. I don’t want to delay forever.P.P.P.P.P.P.S. If it means a sacrifice to you to pay the Advocate fee, you can tell me right now. Promise.P.8. Might send the enclosed picture to S[outh] A[frica] as a twin to Uncle Alex. Fellow’s name is Waterous.2. To Fanny and I. B. MailerClaverly Hall, Harvard CollegeMarch 16, 1941Dear Folks,Sorry you thought I felt depressed about Physics. Futile is a better word. I studied a lot, for the test, and knew my stuff. I just can’t understand it. The rest is good news ↓.I got a 100 in a Statics test last Tuesday. I handed in both scholarship & T.S.E. (job) blanks. (You have nothing to fill out for the Temporary Student Employment stuff.) I just finished a 3500 word story yesterday. Everybody has been enthusiastic about the long thing. The Advocate liked it immensely and said the “suspense was terrific.” I’ve got two stories accepted, and should get a third one too. (They won’t be published, you realize.) I happen to know, though, that they’re a bunch of snobs, and Brooklyn may go against me. Before I take out a subscription for you, I’m going to have a show-down with them. Don’t worry, I won’t jeopardize my chances.I haven’t heard whether Aunt Nan is coming up yet. At present I’ll leave somewhere between Wednesday and Friday of week after next. I’m anxious to get home already.Love,Norm[postscript on envelope] Mom: Will you try and get me two $1.10 tickets to Fantasia. Any night during vacation will do. But try early; understand it’s difficult to get seats.3. To Fanny and I. B. Mailerpostcard, April 9, 1941Dear Folks,Advocate initiation tonight. My play.Definitely are going to print my story [“The Greatest Thing in the World”]. Magazine supposed to come out next week, but this is uncertain. Will be unable to write again until Sunday. Have Physics exam Tues. so may not be able to make it a letter.Love,Norm4. To Fanny and I. B. MailerApril 13, 1941Dear Folks,Am writing a letter to enclose the term bill. The rest is good news.Magazine with my story comes out next week some time.My story may be the first one, and if it is, it will be the first time in several years that a debut has led off in the Advocate.Got an A in Physics for my April Hour Grade. Only mark I got.Story magazine runs an annual spring contest for college men’s short stories. Each college selects a story or two & sends it on to Story where the best one is awarded a prize and published. Out of 45 contributors at Harvard my big story was sent on with another fellow’s to the big judging. My chances of winning are of course slight, but I still feel good at winning the Harvard part.[Robert Gorham] Davis liked my negro-shower room story very much and wants me to send it on to New Yorker. It’s all happening too easy. Also, I’ve now written the first 8,000 words of my novelette which has consumed 39 typewriter sheets with hand-writing. I wrote 2000 Friday night, 5000 Saturday, and 1000 in the last hour. That’s all for a few days though for I’ve got a Physics test Tues. The Advocate initiation was fun. It’s a long story & I’ll tell you about it when I get home. I’m enclosing a playbill. Don’t worry about the bill; they’ll be only too glad to send it to you.Love,NormanP.S. My back is o.k. So is my cough.5. To Fanny and I. B. Mailer[postcard, mid-May, 1941]Dear Folks,Will borrow a tux.Don’t worry about my drinking. I was kidding you a little. No account of [Advocate] dinner in papers.I got a letter from a Mr. Theodore S. Amussen, assistant editor in the firm of Farrar, Rinehart, Publishers. He said that Roy Larsen who was at [Advocate] dinner “was very much impressed” with my story. Amussen on his suggestion read it “and liked it very much indeed.” He asked me to send him any copy of a novel I may write because he “would be greatly interested in seeing more material” of mine. He can’t use short stories. Will send the letter next week.Love,Norman6. To Fanny MailerScarboro Hotel, West End, New Jersey[late July 1941]Dear Mom,I’m sorry I didn’t write yesterday, but I think Barbara explained.I’ve written 14,000 words in the last two nights, and I intend to work through Thursday night till I finish sometime Friday morning. I’ll get a good night’s sleep Friday night, and when you see me Saturday, I’ll be all dimples and crinkles, instead of wrinkles. Please don’t worry about me overworking, because I love it, and really feel very content and happy. The writing is going great guns, and I think the second part will be at least as good as the first. The third part will be excellent.I’m getting a hair-cut this afternoon and I’ll look beautiful of course.I haven’t heard anything, but I do hope you’re feeling much better. Ask Dad to drop us a line if he can, to tell us how you feel.Oh, all my love honey,Norman7. To Fanny and I. B. MailerDunster Hall, G-52, Harvard CollegeFebruary 8, 1942Dear Folks,I have a fair amount of news, and hope to make this a little longer than usual.First I got an answer from Story. I’m sending it on to you, but you must send me a copy back immediately. I’m going to write Mr. [Whit] Burnett and ask him if he wants me to see him before Easter. From the letter, I know he won’t want to publish the book, but I’d like to talk to him about some short stories. Thanks for the shirts Mom.Have you given Osie [Radin] the story? I wish whoever has it would send it on to me (the subway thing) because I want to rewrite it, and I can’t do it unless I have it. If Osie hasn’t read it yet, please show it to her. What’s the story there? The Phil exam was ferocious. I thought I knew my stuff before, but had to change my mind afterward. This seems to be the reaction with everybody that took the test. When are [you] sending up my paintings. (prints.)If it is possible to send me the license plate by this coming Friday, I would appreciate it as [Martin] Lubin and I have a big date fixed up. If it can’t be done let me know anyway.I’m out of postcards, and I don’t have time to write to Aunt Nan, so would you please give her my excuses, and so forth.Don’t think of myself as nineteen yet.Thought Babbie’s stuff was swell. Wrote her a letter about it.What did you think of my long story? You sounded unpleasantly silent on that score.I love you all,Norman[Postscript on envelope] Due to rise in food prices, they are going to give us less food (smaller meals) for the same money. Therefore, don’t feel backward about sending me edibles.8. To Fanny and I. B. Mailer[early April 1942]Dear Folks,Am out of envelopes, so am using this paper to fit into a haphazard envelope.Stories came. Was a marvelous typing job with only 2 mistakes in ten pages. Wonderful, Ma.The other story is in good shape, & there’d be no reason for you to slave thru another copy.I’ve got bad news now, I’m afraid. The story about the printers was false, and spread by John Crockett. He had gone up to Vermont (where the printers are) during Easter vacation, and made up the magazine there. Since he hates me after a fight we had in [a] meeting, I doubt very much if the Negro story will be in this issue. I don’t know, but I doubt it. [Bruce] Barton was furious, & had taken away most of Crockett’s duties. I don’t know however what can be done about my story now. Almost certainly, it will be printed in the next issue.Test in English this Friday. Have Barbara write, and you might try reading the Freud, folks. Thanks for the good criticisms, folks, & have Babbie write what she thinks.Love,Norman9. To Fanny and I. B. MailerApril 12, 1942Dear Folks,There were a few people here during the week. I worked very hard, & only one notable story (rest trash) came out of it, but this story is the best I’ve ever written, I’m convinced. I’ll send it to you for typing as soon as I finish polishing it off.Your idea, Mother, about a Utopia novel is very good honey, but there have been probably thirty or forty good novels about a Utopia already. Keep pitching, hon; it shows you have good ideas anyway. Please send a check for this coming week’s allowance. I’ve worked it out with you on the finance end.The enclosed letter is not to be shown to Barbara until her books come. As soon as she opens them, slip her the letter. I’m afraid they may not come till Tuesday, because I didn’t get the books till Friday night, & they were being sent parcel-post.Went up to the hygiene building. As I told you, it’s nothing. Doctor said it was just fibrous tissue or a benign cyst & would be with me the rest of my life without any danger.Got a scholarship blank out. Since I am unsure of the blank spaces, I wish Dad would fill it in, in very light pencil. Am sending it separately.“Maybe Next Year” was rejected by the New Yorker. John Mosher, the movie critic, wrote the rejection slip. Here it is: “I don’t think [it’s] just the thing for us—not entirely clear as it shifts from one mind’s attitude to another—a complex ‘stream-of-consciousness’ effect which isn’t entirely successful—nor is much clear story or situation given.”Tell Osie that John Mosher wrote the rejection slip. That means a lot since most stories only get a printed slip.Love,NormanDunno what happened with Story magazine yet. Can’t find any of the stories around.10. To Fanny and I. B. MailerBoston, Massachusettspostcard, June 5, 1942Dear Folks,Have no envelopes. Hence this. My exams are over, & I got a C for the term in Engineering which is the only mark I know.I got a job at the Boston State Hosp. for $15 per & room and board. Start work June 12. You mustn’t worry Mother, because the inmates are not dangerous. The whole place looks like a college campus, open & sunny, and the inmates are mainly only shell-shocked veterans.I can’t get home because my play needs some rewriting for the Harvard Dramatic Soc. & I have to work hand in glove with the director. When I make the changes there’s a chance the play’ll be put on. Since I need a rough copy, I wish, Mother that you’d send me the second draft that you used to type out the copies from. Also, Mother, I need about $10. Our board has stopped since the 31st, and it costs a $1.50 a day to eat decently now. I won’t be able to go another week unless you send the $10. You and Aunt Nan will get a big surprise from me soon. It’s unsigned, but you’ll like it.Norm

8 of 9 people found the following review helpful. A Collection as Riveting as a Novel By Dr. Barry H. Leeds How can a selection of letters be as riveting as a good novel? The answer lies in the happy confluence of J. Michael Lennon as editor and Norman Mailer as author of the letters. Lennon, the preeminent Mailer scholar who gave us last year the magnificent and massive authorized biography of his long-time friend and confidante, is the only person besides Mailer himself who has read all 45,000 of the letters (twice!). Organized by decade starting in the 1940s, the two percent of the missives have been very carefully selected to provide thousands of fascinating clues to Mailer's forty-five books for scholars and critics, professors and students. The collection will prove equally interesting to the curious lay reader as well. I started this book with the intention of dipping into it and reading only those entries that seized my attention. As it turns out, I read it avidly cover to cover. A fitting companion piece to the biography (NORMAN MAILER: A DOUBLE LIFE), this book gives an increasingly greater overview of the problematic puzzle that was Mailer and another well-deserved platform for his Boswell, Lennon.

5 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Comprehensive and Captivating By Joe Reubens Once again, Michael Lennon provides a glimpse into the heart and mind of Norman Mailer. Smartly organized, eminently readable and richly sourced with thorough appendices, this colossal collection of letters is a real treat for fans of Norman Mailer. Who knew Norman thought he could beat up Charles Bukowski in a street fight?

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. More hard, Jewish, wisdom per page than The Talmud By Michael Chaiken This beautifully edited selection provides deep insight Mailer's character, beyond all the tropes and cliches usually branded about when discussing his work. Revealed in these pages are the private workings of Mailer's mind, at turns brilliant, paradoxical, hilarious, arrogant, charismatic, but most of all honest-- particularly when discussing his triumphs and faults. This is the real stuff; anathema to the one dimensional, one note, portrayal of Mailer that his detractors cling to. One comes away with not only a richer sense of Mailer's talent, but deep insight into the discipline and iron will one needs to write, create, live, etc.

Synopsis Society has changed faster in the past hundred years than in any other period of human history. This change has profound spiritual implications that most of us are completely unaware of. In a unique way, Conditioned exposes a conspiracy that starts from the beginning of time to the end of the world. It tells how Satan has slowly but surely groomed society to become what it is today, and how he has prepared it for the leadership of the Antichrist in the future. The speed at which human society has been changing in the last hundred years is not only the result of us being an intelligent dynamic species, but also the result of a complex machinery engineered to move society in a direction that benefits Satan's agenda. Conditioned describes this machinery and exposes its:   * roadmap   * strategies   * milestones   *progression through time and space. For those believers who are having a hard time navigating an increasingly dark world, Conditioned equips you with spiritual "high-tech night-vision goggles." It helps you understand a world with a growing antichurch, antiChristian, and antiIsrael spirit while demonstrating how believers still triumph in the end by the power of the Holy Spirit.

Semmes was obviously a very intelligent man with a strong interest in the sciences, particularly meteorology and oceanography. Of course, as a ship's captain, he had need to understand these sciences. His descriptions are vivid and his experiences afloat in the service of the Confederacy are enthralling. He also cuts clearly through the myth of the history of the union concerning the war and clearly shows for what the Confederacy stood and the issues of conflict between the two sides. The book is highly recommended to both those interested in the War for Southern Independence and those who just want to read an excellent historical adventure.

By Kerry Walters If you're like me, you've longed for a user-friendly book to both clarify your own thoughts about global warming and to recommend to those acquaintances, friends, relatives, and colleagues who are either indifferent to climate change or think it's a bunch of tree-hugging hooey. Believe me, Dire Predictions is the book we've been waiting for. I rarely gush in the reviews I write. But I'm gushing in this one.Authors Michael Mann and Lee Kump, the former a weather scientist and the latter a geoscientist, have put together a primer on global warming drawn from IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) reports that offers incredibly helpful illustrations and graphs, beautiful photographs, and informative, to the point text. The explanations are concise, typically a single topic to a page fold, and they focus on exactly the kinds of questions and issues that most of us have wondered about--for example, Is our atmosphere really warming?; How to build a climate model; Back to the future: Deep time holds clues to climate change; Fingerprints distinguish human and natural impacts on climage; Why is it called greenhouse effect? and Couldn't the increase in atmosphere CO2 be the result of natural cycles? The book is divided into 5 parts:1. Climate Change Basics2. Projections of Future Climate Change3. Impacts of Climate Change4. Vulnerability and Adaptation to Climate Change5. Solving Global WarmingOne of the best features of the Mann and Kump's approach is that they don't hesitate to respond directly to the "debunkers" of global warming that have become popular of late.A wonderful book, exactly the sort of popular science approach that citizens, community activists, public policy makers, and presidential candidates need to get clear on the facts and implications of global warming. Highly recommended. Six stars.

63 of 77 people found the following review helpful. great concept By David Appell I love the concept behind this book: an "illustrated" guide instead of another long text of prose about global warming. It has tons of charts and graphs and colorful pictures, so you learn the field in a new way -- less abstractly, more intuitively. Slightly below a Scientific American-level. This book would be great for someone who wants to understand climate change, but doesn't have the background (or patience) to read a 300 page book on it. Plus it would be great for kids 7th grade and up.I've read hundreds of books and articles and papers on climate change, and yet I still learn things from nearly every page in the book, no matter where in it I start.

23 of 27 people found the following review helpful. Comprehensive introduction to climate change By sindark While the 4th Assessment Report (4AR) of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) represents the most comprehensive scientific assessment of the causes and consequences of climate change, the report itself is not written in language that is accessible to the average person. Written by climate scientists Michael Mann and Lee Kump, Dire Predictions is an accessible illustrated guide to the conclusions of the IPCC. It also includes some discussion of the practical, political, and ethical implications of the IPCC's findings. The 200 page book is a quick and easy read, even for those who are not well acquainted with scientific principles and terminology. It responds directly to many issues raised in the media (such as common climate change denier talking points) and it includes a great many illuminating charts and illustrations. It covers key concepts like what climate models are, and the reasons why we expect the planet to respond to a certain amount of additional carbon dioxide with a certain amount of warming. The book is broken into five parts, covering climate change basics, projections, impacts, vulnerability and adaptation, and solutions. It very clearly describes which areas are well-understood scientifically and which areas contain substantial remaining uncertainties. Mann and Kump convincingly explain the core mutually-reinforcing lines of evidence that support the `big picture' view of a world that is being dangerously warmed by human emissions, and in which greenhouse gas pollution must be reduced if major damage to humanity and the natural world is to be avoided. The section on impacts is detailed and wide-ranging, covering everything from different projections of future sea level rise to expected impacts on global agriculture. It covers the trade-offs associated with different mitigation and adaptation strategies, and provides a brief overview of international efforts to address the problem. The section on solutions breaks down where humanity's greenhouse gas footprint comes from, what options exist for reducing it, and what some of the economics of the situation are. Mann and Kump also do a good job of sketching some of the ethical issues associated with climate change, including the disjoint between the people producing emissions and the people likely to suffer most and the question of what represents a fair effort on the part of countries with different histories and present circumstances. The book will be elementary to those who already have a through grounding in climate science and policy, though it may be a good way to get a quick and balanced overview of the whole subject. For those who are new to the topic or who feel confused about what the state of the scientific consensus is, this book would be an excellent place to begin.

Leonard Stringfield was born in 1920. He was director of CRIFO (Civilian Research, Interplanetary Flying Objects) - one of the world's largest research groups during the mid-5Os, and publisher of its newsletter, ORBIT (1953-1957). He also worked in cooperation with the United States Air Force (1953-1957), investigating and reporting UFO activity, having been assigned a special code number for reporting to the Air Defense Command in Columbus, Ohio. For over 30 years, Stringfield served in several of the major UFO organizations in a public relations capacity. From 1957 to 1970, he was public relations adviser with the National Investigations Committee on Aerial Phenomena (NICAP). Later on, he was Director of Public Relations and a board member of the Mutual UFO Network (MUFON). He was also a regional investigator for the Center for UFO Studies, directed by Dr. J. Allen Hynek. Stringfield was an executive with DuBois Chemicals, an international manufacturer. Stringfield retired in 1981 as Director of Public Relations and Marketing Services for DuBois Chemicals, a division of Chemed Corp., after 31 years service with the company. From 1967-1968 he served as Early Warning Coordinator for the University of Colarado UFO Project, screening UFO reports for possible scientific study. Stringfield was also an advisor to Sir Eric Gairy, former Prime Minister of Grenada, 1977-78, during his efforts to establish a UFO research agency within the framework of the United Nations. Stringfield passed away in 1994, leaving a string of fascinating publications behind, one of which is "UFO Crash Retrievals: Status Report IV: The Fatal Encounter at Ft. Dix-McGuire," based on a talk Stringfield gave at a MUFON convention in 1985. This is the fourth entry in Stringfield's influential 7-part "UFO Crash Retrieval Status Report" series, in which he lays the groundwork for the theories that made him famous. In looking at various UFO crashes throughout the U.S. in previous decades, Stringfield, the first researcher to exclusively focus on UFO crashes, shares many intriguing details about a number of major UFO cases. This extremely rare volume has been lovingly reproduced exactly as it was first published 30 years ago. The material within, which was shocking to many observers in those days, is finally gaining acceptance. Today, Stringfield's sober, objective research on crashes like Roswell and Kecksburg has become increasingly relevant. In a field filled with pretenders, Stringfield shines as the "real deal."

These small pamphlets, which I must admit are over priced, do present some of the most amazing and incredible information on the deep underground of lies, deceit, secrecy, and cover ups of the extraterrestrial phenomenon. It is not an over statement to claim, that if true, this is part and parcel of the biggest cover up since the birth of Jesus Christ. Mr. Stringfield, now deceased, is impeccable in his reputation for the truth and his unimpeachable sources. If anyone on this planet knew some of the truth and as was able to expose a small part of what is truly going on, that it was Mr. Springfield.

Leigh and Matthew were best friends from childhood who met at her grandmother’s lakeside cottage in a charming tourist town every Christmas. They dated throughout high school and now, fifteen years later Leigh is a renowned reporter and Matt owns the Little Inn at Bayfield. They have not seen each other since graduating from high school. Leigh is in town to cheer up her grandmother, who recently lost her dog, and finds buried in the garden a time capsule that she and Matt put together when they were fourteen years old. When she meets him again she learns that he is engaged and that the inn is in trouble because the town does not have enough business in the winter. Leigh’s plan is to advertise Christmas in Bayfield via a documentary. Although it is June, sunny and warm, she is determined to dress up the town in holiday style to film. Matt she decides will be the star of her show, and against her will she finds her attraction to him rekindled even though he has a fiancée and she a boyfriend. She realizes that she must never reveal her feelings. But just when she thinks she has managed to shield her heart from him and her current boyfriend, her docudrama, which is nothing short of Reality TV, shows her and the rest of the world the truth.

Leigh goes back to her grandmother's house for a visit and ends up doing a documentary to help save the town. While there she runs into her old high school flame Matt and must reexamine her feelings from past and present. Through the lens of the camera her life is put out there for everyone to see and with that she sees through their eyes what she was missing. A nice read but not my favorite, that would be A Christmas Bunny by Ms. Stewart. All in all a nice story for the holidays.

I have been anxiously waiting to read Colin’s story, and A Lush Reunion was totally worth the wait. When Colin joins Walsh and Mike in Texas, he has no clue that this trip will change his life. He sees Marsha…his high school sweetheart and the girl who broke his heart. Their history is the reason Colin has made some of the bad decisions he has in his life. He did everything to numb the pain, but nothing has ever taken it away. As the two tiptoe around each other, it becomes apparent that the feelings of love are still there. But, is love enough for them to let go of past hurts and learn to trust one another and possibly make their love last this time? There are so many reasons why I am a fan of Selena Laurence’s…too many for this review. So, I will touch on just a few. While there is always an intriguing plot that keeps me interested, her characters do that as well. Her characters are so incredibly complex that they just draw you into the story. I love that she tells the story in dual POV’s so that I get to know both of her characters. Each always has an important story to tell as well. Colin and Marsha are no exception. They are both flawed which made me fall in love with them. Marsha has made decisions that haunt her and causes her to fear what others may think of her, I could understand how terrified she was. And Colin, he did everything to numb his pain. In the previous books, he came across very differently than he did this one. He always intrigued me, and I always wanted to know what his story was, but it was better than I ever imagined. He is so tender-hearted, and he loves animals. What’s not to love about him? In her books, Laurence main focus is on one couple. However, the other characters are in the story, and she does a great job of developing the secondary characters little by little which really intrigues the reader. When it’s time for that character to have a book, I can hardly contain my excitement. As with all of Selena’s books, an important and difficult topic is always touched upon, and she always handles it with such grace and sensitivity. We, readers, get a hot, sexy romance, but we also get our eyes opened to important issues. I honestly believe her books have the ability to change the way people think, thus changing people’s lives in a positive way. And, as always, it’s a story of survival, hope, and new possibilities. It never ceases to amaze me how each title of her book is essentially what the book will be about. I always say each book is my favorite and each character is my favorite, and this book is no different. Another fantastic read by the always phenomenal and talented Selena Laurence. But I know it's no use. She's so far inside of me that I'll never be free. It's karma's way of sticking it to us. Both her and me. It's our punishment. We can never have each other, but we can never be rid of each other either."First off, I must say, hearing that Selena was writing another Lush book and the title was A Lush Reunion had me all EXCITED!!! After the ending of the previous book, I was left wanting so much more. Boy, did I get it!!!I knew Colin and Marsha had a story to tell. Right from the moment they laid eyes on each other after ten years apart, you could sense the heartbreak."How do you summarize the greatest joy and the greatest sorrow you've ever felt? How do you talk about the one person you trusted more than anyone else in your life, and the way that person betrayed you in the absolute most personal and permanent way?"As their story unfolds, you find out the reasoning behind Colin and Marsha's heartache and separation. You might want to grab a tissue. Just saying. You get an in-depth look into the workings of Colin. He spent so many years just being a rock star. Being the bass player that was always high was what he was known for. Once he made the choice to change his life around, he was hit with his past he tried so hard to forget. I loved being in his head. Does that sound weird? I mean, you learned so much about him and find out how amazing he really is.Marsha brought heart-breaking to a whole other level! So many things happened to her in the past ten years that Colin had no clue about. Her struggle made her strong, but her will to carry on made her the most admirable."Spending time with Colin--it's like my worst nightmare and my greatest dream all rolled into one."Now don't think this story is all sad and tissue worthy the whole way through. Nope! You know Selena and her Lush men;) The things that came out of Colin's mouth were-how shall I say-HAWT!!Their attraction never went away. Even though they hadn't seen or spoken to each other in all those years, Marsha and Colin couldn't deny their feelings anymore."Part of me wants to run and hide, while the other part wants to rip Colin's t-shirt off and lick him like an ice cream cone.""You smell like honey. God, I want to lick every inch of you."I mean, COME ON!! Hot right?!This book was full of every emotion. And you feel it all! These characters hold a place in my heart and I don't want to let them go.Selena has done a wonderful job not only telling Colin and Marsha's story, but telling the full story of Lush. Each of these books weaves in and out of each of their lives.I have loved every one of them!!Wonderful story!!!"Touching her is a secret dance, and I remember the steps like it was yesterday."

A very touching emotional read that I really enjoyed By Cyn This was a very emotional touching read with some touchy issues that the author writes in style. I doubt you can read this and not have it touch you in some way. Colin and Marsha have a past together that ended badly. First love is never easy but when you come from a broken home as Marsha did with a bitter mother it makes it that much harder to believe that one person will stand by you.Marsha truly just wanted to make her mother love her doing everything she could to make her happy. Sadly this just could not be when she does the one thing that is unforgivable both to her mother and her first love (Colin). Her choice lost her everything she held dear now 10 years later she much face her past dealing with issue that she still hold close to her heart why dealing with her ex, his best friend and a town that will be torn. What is there not to like about Colin he is an upstanding man who has had to deal with his own issues. It isn’t easy being in a top rock band. There are women, lots of women and drugs. When the band broke up he finds he must pull his self together making changes he needs to which brings him back to square one his first love. He can’t forgive her nor forget her, finding he can’t walk away he will have to make up his mind and do a fast dance to get her back. The supporting characters are wonderful, funny with depth. Each one has their own story which will make you smile. When life gets tough these wonderful people stick together becoming a family. I loved how the dog came into play, how he becomes part of this story. The way the band helps those in need and gives back. The author gives a compelling story that you can relate to why your heart breaks for both Marsha and Colin you really reach out to Marsha as she puts one foot in front of the other just trying to get by. Two people hurt by each other with a strong past, first love and second chances. Even after all these years the chemistry is strong and passion runs deep. The author gives you an emotional read that will have you smiling one minute and broken the next. She gives you a read with such hope and promise for two people who deserve so much. When you get to the ending you will have the biggest smile on your face.I was given this book for an honest review. It is a story you are going to love as it touches your heart which will be tears to your eyes and happiness to your heart.

In late 1944 the war-ravaged Allies needed a base from which to press their growing advantage in the Far East. On a remote coral atoll in the Indian Ocean they launched a top-secret plan to build an air fi eld right under the noses of the Japanese. Code name: Operation Pharos.

Inside Operation Pharos: The War Journal of Major Cyril Cooper, Royal Engineers describes the efforts of the men who, with inventiveness and typical British pluck, but limited resources, managed to accomplish this feat in a few short weeks.

Major Cyril Cooper (the author's father) was responsible for fuel installations on the airfi eld. He left behind a paper trail of documents and photographs that tell a magnifi cent story of his experiences and the challenges - both engineering and logistic - facing the Sappers in their task. Though the war ended within a few months of completion of the base, the Royal Air Force, as well as the air forces of several other nations, made many bombing and reconnaissance raids over Malaya, Burma, Singapore and the Dutch East Indies from this base and loosened the Japanese stronghold in the Indian Ocean.

ABOUT THE AUTHORS: Judith Fortney was a small child when her father left for the Far East. She discovered many of the documents leading to the writing of this book after her father's death in 2002. Staff Sergeant Francis O'Keefe, served in a different unit from Major Cooper during Operation Pharos; his team of divers built the all-important undersea pipeline which carried fuel from ships to the waiting airplanes.

First published in 1992, Immediate Family has been lauded by critics as one of the great photography books of our time, and among the most influential. Taken against the Arcadian backdrop of her woodland summer home in Virginia, Sally Mann's intimate photographs of her children reveal truths that embody the individuality of her own family yet ultimately take on a universal quality. With sublime dignity, acute wit and feral grace, Sally Mann's pictures explore the eternal struggle between the child's simultaneous dependence and quest for autonomy. This reissue of Immediate Family has been printed using new scans and separations from Mann's original prints, which were taken with an 8-by-10-inch view camera, rendering them with a freshness and sumptuousness true to the original edition. Sally Mann was born in Lexington, Virginia, in 1951. Her work has been exhibited around the world and is held by such institutions as The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Museum of Modern Art and Whitney Museum of American Art, all in New York; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; and Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography. She has received numerous honors, including a doctorate from the Corcoran College of Art and Design, Washington, D.C., and a Guggenheim Memorial Foundation fellowship.

Some are unposed, but those that are posed are not elf-conscious, "studio-like" pictures, and the children do not seem to be inhibited, even when nude. My only criticism,if you could call it that, would be that the children all look so serious. A smile here or there would not go amiss.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. What a Book By Jim Lankford Wonderful autobiography about a courageous, talented, free-spirited, and kind-hearted woman. It was absolutely absorbing to come to understand how her life experience was embodied in the subjects that she focused on. As a southerner, I was lead by Mann to recall once again what it was to grow up white in Louisiana in the fifties, and to understand in a deeper way how out of touch we whites actually were with blacks in general, but more specifically with our loving black maids, who raised us like their own children. Many of us sensed that something was fundamentally wrong with our lives, our churches, and our families, but we also knew that trying to talk about these things with our parents and pastors would not be well received. What cowards must of us were; I have always felt guilty about this, as Mann so bravely described in her own life. A stunning book, one of the best that I have read in years. Sally Mann is a national treasure.

3 of 4 people found the following review helpful. The eye of the beholder By Robert Ezerman This book is so much more than just an appealing array of three often unclothed young siblings. Each photo repays many times over open-minded attentive scanning for components relevant to the observer. For example, I love the photo of Emmett ("Popsicle Drips") for its shotgun blast of simultaneous images and references which contrasts the physical vulnerability of this pre-pubescent lad with the in-your-face early genital maturation, his sturdy thighs vrs the twist of his still undeveloped trunk culminating in an extended arm in a "Christ on the cross" position: an impossibly rich photograph, not to mention its titled highlight, the popsicle drips (intrinsically early childhood) framing his budding genitals. While we know from Sally that many of the photos were "Hold still!" posed, none of her children's reactions were posed and in fact their reactions to being posed (boredom, annoyance) are so authentic their scowls are intrinsic and integral to the impact of each such photo. If your interest in this book is prurient, don't bother: on the other hand, the children's natural reactions to being posed and photographed could be an antidote, a form of therapy for the voyeur who might fantasize that the photographed nude child invited the attention.

A pioneering scholarly work By Shalom Freedman It is difficult for me to imagine anyone reading through this work who is not a scholar of Hebrew poetry. The work is of great historical importance as it defines as principal device of Hebrew poetry, the device of parallelism. However refinements and qualifications of Lowth's thesis are made by more modern scholars , two of the most well- known of whom are, Robert Alter and James Kugel.
