It is as if Rick Bragg married Lewis Gizzard and gave birth to Jeff Foxworthy and Flannery O'Conner while filming an episode of Jerry Springer. I mean that in best way possible. His work in this book is southern social satire. It is funny, scathing, sharp and memorable. I have all his books and he is simply a genius. He is a poet, a historian, and an excellent writer of short stores. You will never look at chickens, sardines or Fuller brush salesmen the same way again.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Fresh and Unique! By creekergirl Do not be deceived by the title or the whimsical cover art. These wonderfully crafted stories are not for children. They are for those of us who prefer a somewhat skewed and darker view of the world. The characters are of the down-to-earth might-even-live-down-the-road variety and usually a little down on their luck. They find themselves in situations ranging from the mundane to the inexplicable, from the humorous to the terrifying. Although each story has elements of the universal human condition, the Appalachian roots and Southern background of the author shine through. I happen to share that heritage, but these little gems offer a new perspective through different eyes. I may never look at giraffes or chickens quite the same way again. Do yourself a favor and buy this book! I can practically guarantee that at least one of the stories will rock your world!

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Twisted Tales of Human Nature By D.R. Peak 'When Giraffes Flew' is a collection of short stories by Jeff Weddle. Varying from the fantastical and allegorical to twisted tales of human nature, these stories are full of surprises throughout. Weddle is best when he sticks to stories featuring folks from the wrong side of the tracks trying to make their own sense out of a world that doesn't care about them in the least. These stories are mostly humorous, sometimes heartbreaking, always going wonderfully astray. Weddle doesn't deal much with predictability, he often allows the characters to make their own choices--usually to their own detriment.I'm reminded of Arthur Bradford's collection 'Dog Walker Stories' and Denis Johnson's 'Jesus' Son' (Both of which owe a lot to 'Drugstore Cowboy'--the book by James Fogle, not the film, good as it was) which feature characters on the down and out without ridiculing them as much as showing their all too often failing and human side. People are people wherever they go, so it is often said, and Weddle knows how to showcase the interesting and often disturbing side of human nature in a decidedly off-beat manner.

By University of Idaho Borrowed Horses is a novel not only about horses, but about life, love, choices, and decisions - and how all of those things shape you as a person. Those of us that know about horses understand their pull and power. Borrowed Horses will make that old adage of 'the outside of a horse is good for the inside of a man' ring true for those who have never had the opportunity to know the pleasure of horses up close and personal. This book made me laugh, cry, smile, and shake my head in understanding - all in the first 75 pages. I cannot wait for the next novel by Sian Griffiths.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Gorgeous, beautiful, soul wrenching story, a must read By horsemom I'm not sure I can even write this review. I definitely can't without tears apparently. Horse lovers will recognize every stride of every horse, every half halt. But, you don't have to be a horse person to connect with this novel. The plot and characters are real life and drawn with incredible skill. I will be thinking about this story for days and will be reading it again soon. I know I didn't take in all the subtle layers the first time. If you love a book that grips you and doesn't let you go, read this! Phenomenal writer. Just incredible.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. You don't have to love horses to love this book By JSav I do love horses but I fell in love with the characters in Sian Griffiths novel even more. There's something so raw about her writing that I felt immersed in the world she created and like I understood all of the characters on a deep level...so much so that I didn't want to get to the end of the book. Like every good story, I found myself thinking about it for days and even weeks after finishing the book. I sent a copy to my sister and have recommended it to many friends since.

I know that I will read it at least three times because it is more than an echo of what millions of people are silently SCREAMING each week as they attend the local church hoping to find their "PURPOSE" without lifting a finger after they exit the sanctuary. If you grew up in the Pentacostal Church, Baptist, COGIC or any other denomination that became your life and you feel trapped in a purposeless life, then this book is for you, YES YOU!! this is not really a book....it's a VOICE. Delightfully twisted By Annabele You receive a plain wrapped DvD, there's nothing on it except your name and address, no stamp or postmark so someone must have dropped it off. After putting it in the DvD player, the first thing you see is your loved one strapped to a chair, helpless and scared. After saying they love you, the screen goes black and a note appears. Your told if you alert the police, your loved one will die, if not, you will continue to receive a DvD every day until the captors get bored and let your loved one go, it's your decision. Your first thought? There's no way this is real, it's a sick joke, that is... until time passes and your loved one still hasn't shown up, that's when you notice you've received another DvD. You don't want your love to suffer, but you don't want them to die either. But what can you do?A Completely twisted tale from the mind of Matt Shaw, delightfully sick, twisted, and totally creepy. Not for the easily offended. In a nutshell, if you didn't like hostel, avoid this story, if you did, then you're going to love it.Great character development, storyline, minimal errors. Bad guys you wish harm upon, and innocents you want to save. Highly Recommended to those not easily offended. Remember, this is an Extreme Horror Novel, not for those who can't watch a really twisted movie or read a similar type book. Her fiancé is also tortured by a decision he is unable to make. Yes, the scenes of the woman being subjected to horrific things are cringe-worthy, but I think the real story is about the two men who kidnap her.As children, they were social outcasts. As so often happens, they were bullied because they were different: they didn't look right or didn't talk right or their parents were poor or they were bad at sports or any of the various reasons kids bully each other. They were both alone and were victims until they found each other. Once they had each other, they began to take revenge on their tormenters, presumably because they gained strength through the other one.They honed their torturing techniques through the years until the point of this story is reached. We have no idea how long they have been kidnapping women. We know they kidnap beautiful women who are involved in relationships and this is something neither of them were ever able to have. So they get their revenge on the beautiful women who rejected them and on the men the beautiful women loved so the men would know the feeling of powerlessness they felt as children.We all know bullying is very damaging to children. Most bullied kids do not resort to the revenge these two needed to get, but bullying makes kids vulnerable to many bad influences. Once they find someone or some group that accepts them, they often can't distinguish between positive and negative influences. They are just so relieved to belong. I think this story is a warning about the depths some damaged kids may sink to simply because they didn't wear the right kind of shoes

I wanted to get to the end in hopes it would put an end to this poor girls torture, what kind of monsters would put other humans through such an ordeal? Fans of modern horror will love this story! If I am ever able to get this story off of my mind, I might re read it.

By Zach I received an advanced copy of this novella for an honest review.Having never read any of the Samantha Moon series, I wasn't really sure what to expect, even though I am a big fan of J.'s work. I ended up reading the majority of this book in one sitting. The story was awesome! It was fast and suspenseful, and definitely some nice twists. Personally, I'd love to see this turned into a spin-off series. The characters are strong enough and the concept is awesome.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Post-apocalyptic vampire war? Yes, please! By J. Evans Being a fan of J. Thorn’s writing, I was eager to check out “Vampire Apocalypse”. It’s a novella, so I was able to finish it pretty quickly. It was an enjoyable read and kept me hooked so that I ended up reading the entire thing in one sitting because I wanted to see how it finished.I won’t give out many spoilers, but a turn of events brings Samantha Moon into a post-apocalyptic world where there is a vampire war being waged between two rival factions. The storyline is classic J. Thorn and I found parts of it reminiscent of J. Thorn’s “Portal Arcane” series which I thoroughly enjoyed. I haven’t read any of the books in J.R. Rain’s “Vampire for Hire” series, but I found the character of Samantha Moon intriguing enough that I intend to check them out in the future.I highly recommend “Vampire Apocalypse” to fans of J. Thorn, or anyone else that enjoys dark fantasy, post-apocalyptic, or vampire fiction. I suspect that fans of J.R. Rain’s “Vampire for Hire” series would also find this novella enjoyable because it places Samantha Moon into a post-apocalyptic setting that readers of the series are probably not used to.

He makes you live in Samantha Moons world in all parts of time.I couldn't put it down until the wee hours of the morning. And you won't be able to either! I can't wait for the next episode. I hope that there are many more to come!

By Amazon Customer Squeaking By is not like any novel I've read before.The narrator begins his story as a young boy, not just reflecting on the past but narrating in the moment. The writer does a great job of making the narrator sound like a youth is actually telling the story without sounding juvenile, which is something I find very interesting as a writer myself. The story continues all the way into the narrators adulthood.Being a person who has had no personal experience with Tourette Syndrome other than having few friends who live with it, ("I swear I'm listening to you and I'm interested in what you have to say, I just roll my eyes because I have Tourette Syndrome.") reading this novel gave me a brand new look into what life is like for someone who lives with it. This novel provides a first person account of what it's like to experience it for the first time, grow up with it, deal with it and how it effects a persons social life and more. It was really eye opening.That's the wonderful thing about literature. You can pick any topic to read about and find yourself enlightened.I didn't know what to expect when I purchased this novel, and it certainlty gave me an oppertunity to reevaluate how I see the world and the people who live in it with all of their complexities and unique traits.As much as I love a good YA novel (I'm in my twenties haha), it's refreshing to read a book that isn't centered on the same rehashing of some young love story.This novel stays true to the real world. As a kid, the narrator deals with issues any child would experience, but this time magnified by undiagnosed Tourette Syndrome. He grows up. He's a teen. You can imagine what a teen who is trying to be just that would feel like with undiagnosd Tourette Syndrome. Then, as an adult.Things can get extremly awkward, and the language is completly honest and doesn't really hold back. It's blunt but it needs to be.We take a lot for granted in life. We take not making uncalled for noises for granted, we take not having unorthadox and embaressing twitches for granted. We take a lot for granted and we dont realize it until we sit down with a book like Squeaking By. Brian Jaffe has done us a good service by writing this novel.Even in today's progresive world, we can still find people online making insensitive and ignorant jokes about mental health. "Wow, I totally have Tourette's today. I cant stop shaking my leg." "God, I'm so emo today," and so on. It's novels like these that may actually help the world view disorders in a new light.Highly reccomended to EVERYONE. Must read.

By Steve I remember in college sitting around a table at the local watering hole drinking boutique beers with fellow students and regaling each other with our miserable childhoods. Each story seemed more horrid and I was amazed how we endured. Only through our own true grit and self determination were we able to survive kindergarten bullies, overprotective parents and acne. “Squeaking By” shames us.Brian Jaffe is a great story teller and he has a great story to tell. What he went through as a child is incomprehensible! Most people who write memoirs make themselves look pretty good. Not Brian. Every story, every agonizing embarrassing moment rings true, even if he shines unflattering, harsh light on himself. The book reads like Brian is sitting across from you at that college table watering hole telling his story, which makes it intimate and compelling. Given the subject matter, one would think the book is a tissue box read. That would be a misdiagnosis. I found myself laughing out loud more often than not.A platitude rightly states, “If it doesn’t kill you, it makes you stronger.” So if you have the pleasure of meeting Brian Jaffe, you are meeting the heavyweight champion of the world.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Short and Sweet Gift of Wisdom By Joan Kiley Just read straight through this little gem, and most definitely recommend it! I am not a psychotherapist, though I've studied psychology. Rather, I am an astrologer, and do a bit of coaching when asked, so "counseling" is surely part of my work. What struck me most about this book is the wisdom in it, the wisdom that comes with getting your assumptions trashed by experience, the wisdom that comes with serious wounding of yourself by yourself, the wisdom that comes with dropping out of your intellectual head space into your heart space—and then staying there. Yes, part of it is age, part of it is a willingness to become more conscious and to evolve. But what it mostly seems like is that willingness to simply be who you are, and hold the space for another to be. That is healing.A great read!

I really liked this book and whole series in general By steamy book momma This is the third and final book in this series and you must read them in order. I really liked this book and whole series in general. There are lots of twists and turns. This series is about lost love and a bit a trouble. Lauren Mitchell has been thrown in jail and bailed out by Aedyn. She must stay in Granger while Aedyn needs to be in Chicago. Chip has made it look like Lauren was in on the insurance scam and left her to take the fall for all of it. Lauren and Aedyn are now forced to spend more time apart. Lauren has lots of self-confidence problems. Every time she thinks she is making progress something or someone comes along and she is right back to where she started. Now that she is facing possible jail time she worries that it will hurt Aedyn's reputation and that maybe he will realize she isn't worth the trouble. Aedyn has his best people working on Lauren case to ensure that she won't have to go to jail. However they have to find Chip and get him to cooperate in order for that to work. Will Lauren go to jail? Will Aedyn and Lauren's relationship be able to with stand yet another challenge? Lauren is so gullible and has lots of self-doubt. Instead of believing in herself and what she and Aedyn have she is willing to believe what she is told by others. She is so worried about everything and every possible outcome that she begins to doubt everything. Aedyn is totally focused on making sure she doesn't go to jail and being strong for her. He wants a future with her. Aedyn has done some questionable things but then hasn't everyone? His history with drugs and women bugs me but he hasn't done anything like that since he got together with Lauren. I love her crazy friend and would love to read more about her. Lauren's doubt drove me batty sometimes. Overall I enjoyed this book and the series and would definitely recommend it to others to read. I love Eve Carter and look forward to reading other book by her in the future.I was given this book in return for an honest review.

HOT HOT HOT By kendra This is one series that I wish could go on forever and ever, I am so in love with Aedyn, you cannot even imagine the love I feel for him. I wish I could tie him up in a box and bring him home to have all for myself. That being said, SAVED BY DETINY by Eve Carter was an amazing read and a series that will be on my to reread list.The story in this book is very well written and well developed and the plot is fast paced and flowed nicely throughout the whole book, it will keep you on the edge of your seat with anticipation of what is going to happen. The characters in this book are one of my favorites from the writings of Eve Carter, Aedyn and Lauren are perfect together and go through so much in each book in the series that my heart would break a little each time they are pushed apart.This is book three in the series and the final book (did I mention I am not ready to say good bye to Aedyn and Lauren yet) and wraps up all loose ends for us, however it does leave things wide open for Eve Carter to be able to give me, opps us, more of Aedyn and Lauren's story, which we can all hope she will. This book is based on Aedyn doing everything possible to help Lauren prove that she was not involved in the insurance scam that her ex was running through his family business, and through it all Lauren thinks that Aedyn is leaving her and cheating on her due to a slimy reporter that keeps stick his nose in where it does not belong. I don't fell I can tell you more of what happens in this final book without giving spoilers and ruining the book for you.SAVED BY DESTINY by Eve Carter was an amazing read and a great ending, but I hope not, to Aedyn and Laurens story, Eve Carter could write about the moon and I would read her books.

By Carrie Renteria Eve Carter I just could not have asked for a better ending for a series it was absolutely perfect!Saved By Destiny was absolutely the perfect title for this book it describes the story line that Eve Carter portrays seamlessly. Saved By Destiny picks up exactly where Driven by Destiny leaves off Lauren has been taken to jail and is back in Iowa, Chip has fled town and pinned everything on Lauren and now its up to Aedyn to try and figure out how to get Lauren out of this mess. The question is with the sleaze ball tabloid reporter still following Aedyn and now Lauren around trying to get a scoop or a story will he come up with something or find something now that they are living in two different states? This book is full some high impact emotions we are taking drama, drama, drama, suspense, action and some majorly hot and steamy sexual tension and some hot interactions between Aedyn and Lauren as well.Eve Carter does such a fantastic job of building tension and creating connections between characters in her books it was amazing to see it play out in the story line throughout this series. It truly was a fantastic series. If you haven't downloaded it or added it to your TBR list add it because this is one hot and steamy series you do not want to miss!!
