Ernst Ludwig Kirchner was a leading figure in the early-20th-century German Expressionist group Die Brücke. He produced paintings, prints, and sculptures that opposed the conventions of academic art. His nudes, landscapes, and scenes of urban life on the eve of World War I are known for their unsettling effects of psychological tension and eroticism, while his powerful, crudely executed black-and-white woodcuts illustrated many books and magazines, including Germany’s leading avant-garde periodical Der Sturm. Albrecht Dürer was a lifelong influence on Kirchner, but painters such as Edvard Munch and Vincent van Gogh, as well as African and Polynesian art, inspired his use of bright colors, simplified forms, and malevolent, mask-like faces. His art was labeled as “degenerate” by the Nazis in the 1930s, and he would commit suicide in 1937.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. THANK YOU, Gracen By Andrea Kozári Royal Parnerships is operating as a bridge between the original trilogy and the upcoming spin-off books (Zen & Elias -if we live long enough to see these :P). It provides closure as well as sets up new storylines.RP starts a little bit slow, bringing us up to date with our favorite hellish crew's life. Mostly it's about Madison's choice at the end of Genesis Queen and how others (like Nix's jackass family) deal with that. Also the old epilogue from GQ have been moved to as one of the plotlines in RP, clearing things up a bit (at least for me), but nothing new. However, this is only the first half of the book. The second half brings a helluva lot more exciting stuff to the table.First of all, there are new enemies. Some Angel just can't sit on their @sses and are out for Madison's blood and they're bringing the big guns. Meaning: awesome new characters. A trio of total bad@ssness, though I wouldn't have mind to see them in more action. And then there's a secret weapon, a new creature, basically the Ace in the deck which could be Madison's downfall. Whoever holds it has a serious advantage. Besides the Angels and their backup, Madison has to deal with one more enemy. A freakishly powerful demon who wants to unleash himself and his buddies on the world, and if you thought Micah's apocalypse plan was the worst thing that could happen to humans, well... let's just say this would be way worse. But as good old Hippocrates said: "For extreme diseases, extreme methods of cure, as to restriction, are most suitable." So Madison has to battle with her own self and her lovers, too, to do what must be done, to ask and accept the help of those none of them trust. Which brings us some very interesting and intense family reunions. And above all this, there's still an unnerving prophecy about someone close to her betraying her and at this point, it could be her mentor, friend and adopted brother, Zen, or even one of her lovers. What made me love this book was that it was a perfect bridge between two era. It didn't feel like a waste of time, paper or money because it really gives the fans what they would expect from a novel like this. The characters, and along with them the story is moving forward, evolving and becoming bigger, better and more complex. I loved seeing Madison's bad side and that she finally acted like a total boss, a true Queen of Hell. We got to see more depth of some characters which helps us see their action more clearly and can even help to understand them more. I waited for so long for this book and I was anything but disappointed. I was excited, captivated, amazed, impressed and freaking happy (mostly for a certain character's return). The only bad thing about this book was that it was far too short and ended it on a cliffhanger! This series is TORTURE... like.."No one in the history of torture's been tortured with torture like the torture I am tortured with."

Those crazy gals that can't get enough of King Eliel. We get a lot more of- and in depth with Elias. Still, he hasn't won me over. As is expected of a Gracen Miller book, this special installment is full of twists and surprises, plenty of heat, and the perfect hook to leave us wanting more. That pretty much sums it up. What I love about this story is that the passion is as strong as ever. Like we never left this amazing, disturbing world. Despite fears, doubts, and seemingly insurmountable struggles, Mads and crew never give up without a fight. Here, the problem is knowing who the enemies really are. And that is Gracen's brilliance. This woman can twist a plot and your mind. It's painfully wonderful.Love them or hate them, each of  these characters bring passion into every word, every thought, touch, or action. And each is a master manipulator- even our now-not so little- Amos. So, now that Mads is Queen, the rules have changed again- and so have alliances. The list of beings that want Madison and Amos dead is growing and time is running out. While the risks seem to grow tenfold, the struggles hit home as well, and  we find our original trio questioning their arrangement. There is no denying the love between them but can Micah continue to share his one true love and creation? Can Nix handle Madison's role in Hell? And what is going on with Elias? Will Micah ever forgive his twin for his torture of Madison? So many questions. And many, many more. As always, Gracen pushes her characters to the limit and the results are shocking and amazing. No one is safe from exposure or their pasts. The world as they know it could very well end. Would any survive? Well, we get a great glimpse into more of our faves like Zen and Elias, and how their roles have changed through choices made and destinies shifting, and that gives us a wee peek into what the future could hold for them all. Gracen also throws in a couple of treats for her diehard fans. This book is for us, after all, and it leaves us with hope for another installment. Because honestly, we still can't get enough of these characters.I'll be honest- my one critique... I felt Micah had lost a bit of his edge. I thought maybe he'd softened, he wasn't as frightening and threatening. It made me pause. Ya'll know I sold my heart and soul to Micah way back in Madison's Life Lessons. But, as I continued to read, I saw Gracen's vision. And though I had my own doubts, she never lead me astray.Dramatic, highly erotic, and twists at every turn... it's exactly what we wish for in a Gracen Miller novel. Buckle in, kids, you're in for another terrifying, sexy ride on the Road to Hell.

As a longtime fan of the Road to Hell series, I was super excited that the author was giving us more of these wonderful characters. It was worth the wait because it was a fantastic addition to the series, and quite possibly my favorite book so far.First off, after reading the first three books in this series I was torn between which of the guys I liked better. Micah officially won me over in RP. He's just so darn funny and had me laughing out loud the entire book with his snarky commentary. Madison's character is just as great and I loved watching her learn how to live with her Lynx, yet still be the good-hearted person she always has been. I love kick-butt female characters and Madison is definitely that. This book also reiterates what a good mother she is. She's the character you'd not only like to be friends with, but would like to have your back at all times. All of the other series favorites are back and better than ever.Like all the other novels in this series, Royal Partnerships is a mix of all things sexy, paranormal, and full of action. It's dark, twisted and oh so much fun. The writing is addicting and made it hard to put the book down.I love how the end of RP teases at the next book in the series and I can't wait to read it because it's going to be awesome!Thank you to the author for providing me with a review copy.

Includes 204 photos, plans and maps illustrating The Holocaust “Thousands of Jews and “Aryan” Germans opposed to Hitler led illegal lives under the Nazi terror and survived the relentless hunt of the Gestapo, the concentration camps, and the bombing. They survived in various ways; some as ordinary citizens taking part in the work-day life, others with fake passports, hidden in cellars, living precariously in all the dark corners of a vigilantly policed country. In fourteen autobiographical accounts, author Eric Boehm offers a cross-section of these heroic personalities. We Survived is itself an historical document, giving a window back into this epoch period during World War II. Now reappearing in print over fifty years after its original publication, We Survived remains as relevant and necessary as ever before - an honest testimony to the strength of the human spirit when it triumphs over adversity.”-Print ed.

Twelve tales of life gone wrong and brave battles fought. Only the strong come out stronger. When tragedy strikes the lives of twelve different women, they have to fight back for emotional survival . But society is watching, judging, disapproving. Shadows, Darkness and Light gives a voice to the tumultuous emotions of unsung life heroes, ordinary women that must fight running battles with destiny: a woman finding a place in her heart for a child who is a product of rape, a girl living in the world of forced child marriages, a wife jailed for murder rebuilding the relations with her daughter, a mentally ill woman conquering rejection, a widow who realizes there is no comfort for the bereaved, a dying woman haunted by family arranged adultery, exploitation in the guise of religion and more. These are stories of great courage, self-sacrifice and scars. Scars from the past and from the present. Life is not just another story. It is a personal experience. We can only celebrate the victories of those brave enough to accept they cannot change the past or the present. They cannot flee the shadows, or the darkness that comes with the shadows. But as they seek their identity and prove their relevance, they can influence the future and find the light. Then we realize the fight is not theirs alone. It is our fight for humanity. Shadows Darkness and Light is a short story collection of 67,000 words set in Zimbabwe, Africa.

By Author Jane B Night I received this book through a book review site in exchange for an honest review.I have mixed feelings about this book. It was decently written and I do believe the subject matter was important but it was just not a book I connected to even though I really wanted to.The first story turned me off because I felt like I was thrown right into the book and there was all this description. It was difficult to get my bearings and it was almost like a roller coaster as the character describes her rape and the pregnancy that resulted. I did not get a chance to know much about her before I was thrown into her actual story. I felt throughout the book that there was very little character development which was probably at least partially due to the format which was a short story collection. It was one of those books that I felt bad that something happened to the character because it would be tragic if it happened to anyone but my heart did not break for the individual characters. My favorite story in the whole book was of an aunt who ended up raising her abandoned niece and who hid the girls true parentage for her even when it caused a rift between her and her adopted daughter but even in that story I did not fully feel engaged with the mother character as a character though I could relate to a mother going to any and all lengths to protect her child.Another thing that made this book difficult for me was that I do not have a lot of background in African culture and that made many aspects of this book difficult because many things I had to try to understand based on content alone. It is also possible that my lack of knowledge about African culture led to some of the distance I felt for the characters. Perhaps there were intricacies in the stories that I missed. The book also was written in accent (it sounds like someone with an accent telling the story) and that style, while adding to the realism, also made the book more challenging to understand.I think that this book would be good for a reader who is interested in women’s issues and who has a decent background of African life and culture.

It soars to great heights of the human spirit, and trudges through the troughs of profound unhappiness and injustice.Often, the stories are hard to read, as the author's lead characters -- all women of Zimbabwe -- struggle just to survive another day, in the jungle physically or metaphorically. In many cases, they have no say in how they are treated, or what happens to them -- even in the smallest matters. In the story "Angels in Hell," a young woman complains when her name is changed at her christening to Maria. She bitterly says, "It is not a bad name, but I do not like it. It makes me feel like a sold cow to which the owner gives a new name."Indeed, so much of a woman's existence in this third-world country is beyond her control that one wonders how they ever put a smile on their faces. And yet, some do.In "Poignant Shadows," a housewife much like any other around the world, is bustling about, getting her children ready for school in the city. She calls for her husband twice to get up, then, in exasperation, goes into the bedroom to wake him:"I move closer with caution, ready to flee. But he strikes when I least expect it and grabs me, and I laugh, even though he always does that. We have been together twenty years now, but he clings to the small things that make me laugh."And much later, in "I Am Not Your Mother," a young woman struggles to escape the consequences inflicted on her by a recalcitrant sibling -- her only sister. And a bad lot she is.One day she runs away, leaving her illegitimate daughter for the poor young woman to raise. The situation is dire; yet the author chooses to highlight the innocence of the child, who knows nothing of her mother's worthlessness. The writing here -- as in so much of this remarkable book -- is lyrical:"She reminds me of someone, an elusive face that is hidden in the soft contours of the baby fat. A shadow that lurks behind the soft skin that is peeling off, and the unseeing eyes that blink in the soft light of the day..."Other reviewers have focused only on the harsh and alien culture that needlessly inflicts Zimbabwe's women with unspeakable harshness. And that is true. But there is also much in these writings that speak eloquently of the triumphs of the heart -- a trait shared universally by strong women everywhere.Five stars to this fine collection of stories. They spoke to me in ways only great literature can do. That this book is the product of a person whose native language is not English makes it all the more singular.I received a free copy of this book in exchange for my honest opinion.

P Zoro has a profound and empathetic insight into the lives of women and I resonated with many of the storylines. These stories are embedded very securely in the African culture of their writer. As a reader from Western Europe I was fascinated to discover more of the traditions and circumstances which prevail there. Some of the stories focus on people in rural, hand-to-mouth situations where there is hardship and some ignorance although very strong social bonds. Other stories dealt with city-dwellers who may be rich and successful but who still have their own difficulties to cope with. Very deftly, the writer accommodates the knowledge-gaps some of her readers might encounter by explaining aspects of the customs and social mores which threaten to confuse or inhibit the flow of the story. She also provides a useful glossary of terms at the back of the book.It would be wrong, however, to label these stories as wholly ‘African’. The stories handle subjects which, sadly, are familiar to women the world over; rape, betrayal, restrictions imposed by religious fundamentalism, bereavement, childlessness to name but a few. To be frank, the stories are rather harrowing, dark and shadowed indeed, although some do offer the glimmer of light promised in the title. The writer uses the first person in all of the stories and the African voice is distinct, adding a great deal to the tone and linguistic quality of the work. The language has a kind of lilt and I could hear the cadences very clearly. I liked the way that many of the stories used a central, striking image - a torn up rose bush, a setting sun - to reinforce an emotional state of mind. There were one of two editorial issues which need addressing but they didn’t detract too much from this powerful and affecting read.

She's his caretaker, making sure he takes his heart medication, and handling his bills. She needs the job, her parents were killed in an auto accident on their way to her high school graduation and she is on her own, but on this afternoon he is relentlessly demanding that she laugh at the racist jokes she loathes. He goes too far, she throws his heart medication on the floor, pills flying, storming out. Ditching the white patent leather stilettos he'd required her to wear, she makes the two mile walk down his hill in Beverly Hills barefoot and sweaty.Esme feels guilty and worried about Mr. Galloway and returns to his house only to find his sprawled on the floor, dead as a doornail. In hilarious fashion, she quickly realizes that she has to hide the body (kitty litter and a tarp) and she can move into his gorgeous house. She meets the gorgeous man moving into the house next door and they fall in love. Things go terribly awry, as they will when you have a dead man wrapped in kitty litter and a tarp in the garage, but of course they will find each other again and live happily ever after, madly in love. It's hilarious and I loved the story, couldn't put it down. Esme is a sassy, plucky good girl and you just want everything to go well for her, even as some of her adventures are hilarious. Love stories and, as Ms. Meir puts it, a very dark romantic comedy are the best. Love this. Read it straight through. Wish I could read it again for the first time!

I'm a fan of Weekend at Bernie's so this isn't the first time a corpse has made me laugh but it certainly is memorable. Esmé is a character that sticks with you. She is pure and tough and has some Macklemore-esque fabulous style. Landon, her love interest, is almost too suave and dreamy! This book was especially fun for me to read, as it is set for the most part in my hometown of Los Angeles (which Meir captures well and humorously).
