So, for example, the work BEAUTY is spelled with BE (beryllium) AU (gold) T (titanium) Y (yttrium). Each card's front quote is from a different scientist. On the reverse side (the message/address side) they have a little bio of the scientist. I've shown you the fronts and reverses of two of my favorite cards in the Periodic Thoughts set.The first is Aristotle. I'm not into philosophy, but he led an interesting life, to say the least. The second is Elizabeth Blackwell. How interesting for the first woman to receive an American medical degree to declare: "It is not easy to be a pioneer but oh, it is fascinating!"These are made of sturdier cardstock than the usual postcard. The back of the postcard book jokes: "Each card will stand up to the atomic weight of whatever you have to say." They are also a larger 6.5" x 4 11/16" size. I use a 1st class stamp because of their greater size & weight. The cards are gummed into a postcard book with a sturdy front & back. I take all the cards out of the book and than hold them/stack them inside the book with a rubber band. It's easier to get a card out without twisting it if the card on top of it has already been removed. So, in case I want to use the cards "out of order", it works best for me to take them all out at the beginning.Recommended postcards published by Candlewick Press!Happy Reader

These are ALMOST too pretty to send but I know my "nerdy" friends would be delighted to find one of these postcards in their mailbox. This would make a great teacher gift as well.

But this is no ordinary pie, mind you. Nope, this is grandmother's famous pie that has won all sorts of awards. Not only does she want Lauren to make this pie, she wants her to tweak it, make it her own, and enter it into a contest during the 4th of July fair. Shouldn't be a problem, right? Well, for Lauren who's kitchen skills are lacking, this will be a challenge for her. When a surprise entry shows up to the contest - well, it's game on!On top of the pressure of making the apple pie, Lauren is having to deal with the stress of a long distance relationship with Jack. Commuting back and forth to visit each other is taking a toll on her and it is even harder when Jack won't commit to a wedding date. Lauren and Jack are just so cute together - well, when they are together. And then....just when the pressure isn't high enough, Lauren's new job has provided an interesting obstacle named Trent. Man, this guy is kind of creepy in my opinion. Trent is every Human Resource Office's perfect nightmare. Rumors and gossip are rampant, sales numbers are low and it is all taking a toll on Lauren.Yeah, there is a lot going on in this installment and it was so much fun to read! Oh my gosh, I absolutely loved this book! I have read the other two books in this series, but this is by far my favorite of the three. Lauren's family is such a hoot, and caused several 'laugh-out-loud' moments as I was reading. Once I picked this book up, everything in my life was put on hold because I just could not put it down. Yep....a seriously good book. The romance, the characters and their own personal issues were realistic and relatable. Everything from the story, to the writing, to the characters was perfect - just like the apple pie!If you are looking for a light-hearted romance with some humorous moments, then you really need to check out this series. Ms. Henning continues to improve on her already amazing talent and is definitely an author you need to check out.*I received a copy of this book from the author via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Fabulous and entertaining novel about juggling life and love By LifeWithJoy Review originally posted on my blog www.livinglifewithjoy.comSix months from now, Lauren’s grandmother wants her to make an award winning apple pie, but Lauren’s not exactly savvy in the kitchen. Between the recent promotion at work, the long distance engagement and now learning how to bake this pie, Lauren has got her hands full!Let me start off by saying that I absolutely loved this novel! The main underlying theme throughout the novel was the difficulty that long distance couples go through, especially when trying to plan a wedding. It addressed the insecurities some people have of not wanting to lose themselves by letting the other person take control of their life. Becoming a we shouldn’t mean letting go of me. It also addressed the idea of not wanting to have the other person witness your failures, but ultimately knowing that you have to share the good and the bad in order to build a strong, lasting relationship. There were themes of insecurity, jealously, lack of communication, long distance relationships, major life changes, dealing with the stress of more responsibility in a job promotion and juggling it all. Oh and did I mention love? All consuming, made for each other, can’t stand to be without one another love. There were so many issues in Jack and Lauren’s relationship, and almost all of them were due to distance and lack of sharing the details about their lives. I loved the idea that all things worth achieving take effort and that stepping out of your comfort zone will provide the sweetest rewards in life.Although this is the third in the series, it can be read alone. I haven’t read the first ones, but now I’m dying to go and read them to find out how Lauren and Jack’s relationship started!Memorable Moments:Everything happened so fast… I can’t catch my breath. When we’re together, it’s as if we are on our own planet with no gravity. And when I’m without him it’s like I’ve lost my oxygen tank and I can’t breathe. I’m floating into outer space without my ship.I’m overwhelmed with my emotions. Sadness, worry, doubt, fear, and then the possibility of happiness and enjoyment and the biggest emotion of them all… love.My Rating: 5/5 Stars

By Arlena Title: How to Bake the Perfect Apple PieAuthor: Gina HenningPublisher: CarinaSeries: Home for the Holidays-Book 3Reviewed By: Arlena DeanRating: FourReview:"How to Bake the Perfect Apple Pie" by Gina HenningWhat I liked about this novel....This is series number three for this author of the 'Home for the Holidays' and I did find it interesting read that continues on from from series one with Jack and Lauren who are now engaged but having to deal with a long distance relationship. I will say that Lauren to me in this series didn't handle things as I thought should have been handled from the very start...[example... at her new job]. I will say that she got on my nerves quite a bit through this series by not handling things that she could have stop with the word NO in several instances, however Thank God for her fiance Jack and best friend who was there to help Lauren. So, we have along with Lauren's new job, and her engagement, and coming up was the 'Fourth of July Celebration' which turns out to be a competition that would involved her baking of a 'apple pie' with the recipe given to Lauren by her grandmother. Now, what will become of that? Will Lauren be able to do this with all else is going on with her? The characters [Lauren's family]were still up to their old ways with their dysfunctional selves from series one which did add to some humorous laughter from me. You will just have to pick up this next series to see how this will come out from this well written story we have been given. It will be quite interesting to see what this author will have in store for the readers in Book 4.I received this book free from the author in exchange for an honest review.

The sixth volume of the translation of al-Tabari's History deals with the ancestors of Muhammad, with his own early life, and then with his prophetic mission up to the time of his Hijrah or emigration to Medina. The topics covered mean that this volume is of great importance both for the career of Muhammad himself and for the early history of Islam. Al-Tabari was familiar with, and made use of, the main early source of these matters, the Sirah or life of Muhammad by Ibn Ishaq, a work which is still extant. Although his own treatment is briefer than that of Iban Ishaq, it complements the latter in important ways by making use of other sources. Where Ibn Ishaq gave only the version of an event which he preferred, al-Tabari includes any variants which he considered of value. Thus he mentions the dispute about the first male to become a muslim--'Ali or Abu Bakr or Zayd--and has also several variant accounts of the call to hostility toward Muhammad from many of the leading Meccans and their attempts to put pressure on his family to stop his preaching. The negotiations with the men of Medina which eventually led to the Hijrah are fully described, and there is then an account of how Muhammad escaped an assassination attempt and arrived safely in Medina. A concluding section discusses some chronological questions. This volume does not merely give a straightforward account of the earlier career of Muhammad and the beginnings of Islam, but also contains valuable source-material not easily accessible otherwise, or not accessible at all.

His Taarikh (History of Prophets and Kings) is a great peace of early islamic historiography, earliest with the exception of Ibn Ishaq's Sira. SUNY did great job translating this 40-volume into English. The reder will find out how early Islam developed according to its official narrative, and how it conquered neighboring lands. I would suggest to the reader to also check historiographical works on early Islam by Hoyland, Crone, Cook, Ibn Warraq and particularly by B. Lewis and M. Sharon, which provide more context for Tabari's History and discuss historicity - or lack thereof - of its narrative.

BRADLEYPELICAN PRESS, 2012HARDCOVER, $19.95, 144 PAGES, PHOTOGRAPHS, BIBLIOGRAPHY, INDEXAnyone familiar with Forrest's career knows of his military exploits and the type of men he commanded. A number of units under his command became famous during The War Between The States while others have remained obscure and supposedly lost to history. But with the publication of Professor Michael R. Bradley's THEY RODE WITH FORREST, we now have a complete list of the units that served with Forrest from 1861-1865.While units from Tennessee dominate those that served in his command, he had units from Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, North Carolina, and Texas serving in his command as well. Most of these units were cavalry, with several mounted infantry regiments as well as artillery. Each state has a chapter with the units that served in Forrest's command as well as a history of each regiment with biographies of their key officers. In some of these regimental entries, the author adds interesting anecdotes about a member of the unit often tied to a specific engagement or event in their post-war career. With these entries, he puts a human face on these units. The majority of his sources come from The Confederate Veteran and the Official Records. As Forrest was promoted and commanded larger units, he and his staff of subordinates ensured that the units in his command were better equipped after a campaign from captured Union weapons, ammunition, and equipment. There are some drawbacks to the book though and they are listed below:*The use of footnotes would have shown more in-depth research.*The bibliography is annotated but not complete. The author possibly consulted more sources then he listed but one source that he failed to utilize was The Compendium Of The Confederate Army by Stewart Sifakis.*There are a few unit misidentifications, in particular some of the Kentucky and Tennessee units. Thomas Woodward's 2nd Kentucky Cavalry was raised by Woodward at the end of 1862 and designated it the 2nd Kentucky Cavalry but officials of the Confederate government in Richmond noted that such a designation already existed in John Hunt Morgan's 2nd Kentucky Cavalry. The unit was re-numbered as the 15th Kentucky Cavalry-information missing from this book. Also missing is Woodward's Kentucky Battalion, which was formed in July, 1862 and subsequently disbanded in December, 1862. All this information can be found in the unit's Compiled Service Record which is online.*Several Kentucky infantry regiments serving in Mississippi were mounted due to a lack of cavalry in that state in 1863. Professor Bradley calls all of them "cavalry" regiments in his headings for their respective chapters. None of them were ever called cavalry in the Offical Records but they did retain their infantry designations with their "mounted" being added later. Kentucky had raised a number of cavalry regiments with the same designations and, although the author mentions in the book that these units were raised as infantry, in his headings he refers to them as cavalry. This is a very worthwhile and readable book, as well as a fine reference for the many units that "rode with Forrest". The reader will be surprised on how many units did just that.Lt. Colonel Robert A. Lynn, Florida GuardOrlando, Florida

Review "Terrific wildlife investigation!"-Harriet Klausner, #1 Hall of Fame Reviewer"Grabbed me from the start!"-Lori Caswell, Amazon Vine Reviewer"White-knuckle suspense."-C.J. Box, New York Times bestselling author"Well written and terrifically paced." - AnnArbor.com

From the Author I have long been concerned about the often misleading and over-hyped stories that appear on television and on the internet, and the way in which these reports shape public opinion. I wanted to write about what might go wrong when the media points its accusatory finger in the wrong direction. In Endangered, the public buys into an idea suggested by the media, politicians bow to public pressure, and only the revelation of the truth can stop the awful chain of events in Heritage National Monument.

About the Author Pamela Beason lives in the Pacific Northwest, where she writes novels and screenplays and teaches workshops. She has worked in many fields at many different jobs, including as a private investigator. Every chance she gets, she explores the natural world on foot, on cross-country skis or snowshoes, in her kayak, or underwater in her scuba gear.

Big cats are my favorite wild animal. They always look so regal and majestic sitting high up on the rocks. I have never seen one up close though except at the zoo. I wanted to be in Sam Westin's shoes as she got oh so close to these wonderful animals. But it was more than that that kept me reading, the plot twists were amazing, and as more and more clues were gathered the story that evolved was simply spectacular. I have never been to a park in Utah but the author painted such beautiful pictures with her words that I felt like I was right there. The park is also more than just a setting for this story, it is a character, a character that reacts to not only changes in weather but changes of its inhabitants. A trail can be one way one day and totally different the next. The vastness of caves, nooks and crannies make it the perfect spot for a mystery. This is my first experience with this author but she left us wanting more and a perfect foundation for the series to continue. I am anxious to see the next installment. We are given just a little snippet at the end of this book that is so unfair because I really hate waiting, but it seems bears will be involved.

11 of 11 people found the following review helpful. terrific wildlife investigation By A Customer In Utah, wildlife biologist Sam Westin is at the park for the Save the Wilderness Fund. This park is where she arranged for the release of cougars into the wild. Sam finds a wandering toddler who she returns to his father at a camp site. Not long afterward two years old Zachary Fischer is reported missing again. The media including her friend Adam Steele goes into frenzy mode blaming cougars though there is no clues that the animals are involved with the vanished toddler. Sam blames herself as she thought she sent the boy to his dad, but believes otherwise now. She and FBI Agent Chase Perez go into the backcountry searching for the infant to save his life and prove her cats are innocent before they become the endangered targets of vigilante injustice as hunters arrive in mass. The first Summer Westin Mystery is a terrific wildlife investigation in which the biologist and the Fed know time is running out on the toddler and perhaps the cougars. Their inquiry is filled with stunning twists while readers will believe they are trekking the wild high country alongside the lead duo. With a nod to Anna Pigeon, readers with enjoy going outdoors with Sam as their guide.Harriet Klausner

Ms. Beason's artfully woven detail took me on an armchair adventure to the wilderness. We've got villains, heroines and heroes, innocents in jeopardy, atmosphere....this is just a darn good mystery!

After losing the love of her life she has put herself on a path of self destruction to numb the pain of losing him. She decides to join a MMA gym to give herself a rush.Ford Herveaux is a trainer at the gym where Dakota goes and agrees to teach her how to fight. The chemistry between the two is hot! Will Dakota let go of the past in order to move onto the future??Great book about loss and finding yourself through it.

By (ajk) avid reader *** "Body Lock" by Kimmie Easley.Dakota Asher used to live her life one predictable day to the next. That was until her fiancé was killed.Since his death, she has become an adrenaline junkie, taking risks as often as possible, with an underlying goal that if something happens to her that is fine. She won't fully admit this is the case, but her best friend and roommate, Meghan, has figured it all out. As a potential remedy, Meghan suggests Dakota start going to the gym again.Ford Herveaux is a MMA competitor and coach. When Dakota enters the gym where he trains and works, she in for a few surprises. First, Ford isn't as mean as he initially presents when Ella overhears him training another individual. He is actually patient and caring and works with her to see what she has to offer experience wise. Second, she is better at MMA than she thought she would be and she really enjoys it. (She had said she had some experience when in reality she had very little.) Third, the friendship and then relationship between her and Ford occurs quickly and easily and is something they both need individually and jointly for different reasons. Fourth, their relationship is one where they can keep their training separate from their romantic relationship, which benefits them both.I enjoyed this novella a great deal. I love the characters and the changes in both Dakota and Ford from the very beginning to when the book ends. They both have their own baggage but are able to bring it into the relationship and support one another as versus it being a hindrance.I like the story line and the manner in which the author writes and tells their story.Yet, it seemed that the book just stopped as if one was in the middle of reading it and then nothing. There was so much more that the author could have done with this story and so much more she could have done with the characters. The abruptness with which the story ended was really oft putting. I thought there was a mistake and part of the novel was missing. Not the case. This novella is a wonderful story and I hope at some point the author actually expands on it from where she ended it as there is so much more she can do with this book that would easily make it a five star read.I recommend the novella as the characters and story line are great, but be prepared for the abrupt ending...

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. This book is a good, quick By LeAnn M. Foster, PA I received a copy of Body Lock from the Author Kimmie Easley for a honest review, so here it is....I gave this book 5 stars!!!This book is a good, quick, fun read. I love a good MMA book and this is right up there with some of the best MMA books out there. Kimmie has once again knocked out of the park with this book. Its not that long and you can read it in a matter of couple of hours. The storyline has realism as well as the characters.Dakota is fighting her emotions over the death of her boyfriend. When her best friend suggest that she get some of her frustrations out at the gym, she know that she can't go back to the gym that her and boyfriend attended. So she decides that she wants to start training as a MMA fighter. She has to lie to get into this new gym saying she had previous MMA training. When she gets partner with Ford a hot, sexy as sin MMA fighter and manager of the gym, she starts to have feeling she didn't think she would ever have again. Can Dakota let her past go and have a future with Ford?Kimmie you have once again gave us a wonderful love story and I can't wait to read more of your work.

Best Ebook Mother and Child: Wildlife Photography, by Reg Grundy

Reg Grundy is one of the key figures in the history of television, known in his native Australia and around the world for his successes as a producer and entrepreneur. Fewer are familiar with Grundy's photographic talents, which were first recognized and emboldened by his friend, legendary celebrity photographer, Douglas Kirkland. Culled from more than four decades of archived photographs, Mother and Child is a breathtaking collection of photographs on the most universal of topics the enduring bond between mothers and their children, shared by all living beings. These evocative photographs take us from the red soil of the Arabian Peninsula to snowy, polar-bear inhabited corners of the arctic, offering glimpses of maternal relationships across boundaries of nation and species. Portraits of mothers as they feed, nurture, teach, and play with their young serve as a poignant reminder that all species live rich emotional and social lives, sharing so much with their human counterparts. This memorable perspective on wildlife, by a man whose vision and determination allow him to thrive at any endeavour he chooses, is a tribute to life and love in its purest form: the relationship between Mother and Child.

Review This artistically displayed book of close-up images not only makes a nice conversational book on a coffee table, but it also would be an excellent teaching tool for young children as a “show and tell” in a classroom or library setting where young ones can learn about mother and baby animals in the wild. (Connie Withay Book Pleasures, June 14, 2015)The relationship between mother and child is special whether it is in the human world or in the animal kingdom. Capturing that magnetic link between mother and child in a still image can be difficult, but Mr. Grundy has done just that. He has photographed in all corners of the planet and in this book there is a wide assortment of images of mother and child with birds and mammals of all sizes. This book is a treasure. The photographs are lovely and they capture those special moments. (Noella Ballenger Apogee Photo Magazine)The incomparably strong relationship between mother + child is one that can simply be demonstrated between how the mother protects + cares for her child. This, in turn, lead to the creation of ‘Mother and Child: Wildlife Photography' by Reg Grundy, published by Glitterati Incorporated. Considered a dedication to the resilient animal mothers of this planet + their amazing offspring, Gundy's goal was to capture, through his lens, the essence of this critical + protective bond. Photos & Facts of Wild Animal Families By Conny Title: Mother and ChildAuthor: Reg GrundyPublisher: Glitterati IncorporatedISBN: 978-0-9903808-7-0“The protective instinct that a mother has for its child is timeless – whether it is a human mother or an animal mother. The relationship is unique,” Reg Grundy writes in the introduction to his table book, Mother and Child: Wildlife Photography. This over-sized one hundred and seventy-six page canvas-binded hardbound targets those who enjoy viewing and learning about animals in the wild, especially how a mother and child relate. After a preface by Douglas Kirkland, foreword by Guy Cooper, and introduction, a portfolio of almost one hundred and fifty pages focus on animal families. The end of the book includes an epilogue by Joy Chambers-Grundy, biographies, an index, and acknowledgments.Concentrating on a mother and child scenario in the wild, the beautiful full-color, one-eighth to full-page photographs grace the pages. Each picture has a corresponding article describing where the photo was taken, the name of the animal, its characteristics, and sometimes birthing to lifespan information. From baboons, crab-eating macaques, ebony langurs, and great blue herons to koalas, mongooses, oryxes, and wallabies, the family unit is presented in wild natural environments. One example is the Himalayan tahr (Hemitragus jemlahicus) with a two photographs of the mother licking her newborn calf. With the birthing happing while being photographed, the parent immediately started to clean her baby. Pregnancy is seven months while nursing last six months. Found in the Himalaya Mountains, the goat-like mammals have strong hooves for climbing. Males can weigh up to three hundred pounds while females are normally half that size. This artistically displayed book of close-up images not only makes a nice conversational book on a coffee table, but it also would be an excellent teaching tool for young children as a “show and tell” in a classroom or library setting where young ones can learn about mother and baby animals in the wild.Doctor Reg Grundy AC OBE is one of “the 50 Most Influential Australians of All Time,” having produced more than one hundred and sixty television programs. Contributor Kirkland is a well-known photographer, and contributor Cooper is an international business executive. Chambers-Grundy is the wife of Grundy and a historical fiction writer. Thanks to Glitterati for furnishing this complimentary book in exchange for a review based on the reader’s honest opinions.

Maternal Bonding By aron row Australian television producer Reg Grundy has indulged his passion for wildlife and photography to theme together a collection of images on the maternal connection with her young. While traversing the world from the arctic to South Africa, across continents, and through myriad safaris over the past twenty years, he has photographed the native fauna with especial emphasis on the mother-child bond.In this arresting portrayal of the animal relationships, the photographs are assigned one side of the page while the facing page presents factual data about the pictured specie. Their behavior, habitat, appearance, feeding habits and other pertinent details are clearly described. Animals such as the chimpanzees of Africa, sea lions in Australia, White rhinoceroses from South Africa, Meerkats in the Kalahari desert, polar bears in the Canadian tundra, tigers in Asia, and even great blue herons in Florida are displayed with mother and child posing. While the photos are engaging, the pictures are not any more remarkable than other wildlife photos. The filial theme binds them together and this would make an excellent picture book for children to leaf through with an adult aiding them to decipher the information.

Connie lives in a modern day harem with her ex, his next two wives and their five children. It's a 'sensible' arrangement that cracks when a new woman arrives on the scene. Is this one wife too many? Connie struggles with the realisation she must finally let her husband go. As she builds her last collection of ceramics, Connie reflects on longing, serial monogamy and his career as a herpetologist. Humans have much in common with frogs. Metamorphosis parallels the reactions of mud and glaze in a kiln. Man of Clay is about family, frogs and art. The kiln fires hotter than the crematorium.

Connie Baldwin, a sculptor leads a complex life. She has never stopped loving Jude, her ex-husband whom she divorced out of guilt when she could not give him another child. Connie plays matchmaker, Jude and her friend Zita marries and has children. Jude eventually divorces Zita, marries Simone and starts another family. Connie convinces Jude that he and “the wives and kids” should all live in her apartment building as one happy family. This arrangement seems to work until Jude admits his involvement with another woman, and Zita plans on marrying again. Connie’s well-structured life suddenly unhinges and she finds herself battling to keep her “wives harem” together with Jude as the primary male in their lives.“You can’t have your cake and eat it too, or can you?” Reading Man of Clay made me realize that this quote does not apply to Connie who narrates so emotionally about the changes in her life. The characters try to maintain stability in their unusual living arrangement but insist on doing things out of the ordinary. I think Connie is overly protective, yet slightly jealous as she strives to create the perfect family while still yearning for Jude. Jude is a womanizer who tends to "go with the flow” and let the wives make most decisions. The story has a mature writing structure that is more suitable for older adults, and it moves at a slower pace that seems appropriate for a setting that reflects the 1960’s onwards. The characters have strong personas, which are different from each other, so that made the drama absorbing. There are numerous interesting comparisons throughout the book about the similarities of humans and frogs, as Connie refers to some amphibians that are associated with fertility. The cover illustration is lovely. This is Victoria Osborne’s first novel and she has managed to produce a nicely written, very original thought-provoking story.

Not just human, but uniquely so, apart from the other species that we share the Earth with? As Victoria Osborne unravels those question in Man of Clay, Constance (Connie) Sonnenberg's relationship with her ex-husband and father to her son is coming apart. In Connie, Osborne has created an engaging character that often views her own life from a remove, studying it much the way her ex-husband might examine one of his beloved frogs, who after all are not that different from humans. While reading the book, I became connected to Connie. She into an every-woman who I believe will appeal to a variety of readers, not just female. Her struggles with the collapse of a relationship that means so very much to her, her own aging, making room for her art and her relationships with her son and the new wives of her husband are items that most readers will find familiar from their own lives. It is in Connie where I found answers to the unique state of struggles that all humans find themselves in, perhaps the essence of humanity, what makes us unique? In crafting her character and her life, Osborne utilizes a technique that jarred me into a sense that this narrative was different, not the same as novels that I have read before. The author weaves between reflections on Connie's relationships to information about frogs and humans to her sculpting and back through them all again. Osborne deftly develops Connie, right from the start, and that is needed. Without that strong character, I am afraid that jarring, seemingly disjointed narrative, would have proven insurmountable. I and other readers will read on because we have become invested in Connie from the start. As I continued reading, the method to what initially seemed madness, came to light and found that truly, Osborne's construction mirrors real life more than linear novels and is thus more satisfying. Man of Clay will have readers thinking, examining their own life narratives and comparing with Connie's. It's the best kind of book, where a reader can find escape, but still come home to themselves through the story.

Gray Every once in a while as I walk blindly through the aisles of the virtual Amazon bookstore I stumble across a book that surprises me. This is one of those occasions. The intriguing description drew me in, but the author’s command of the English language and her creative imagery is what kept me there. The writing and multidimensional characters make suspension of disbelief a natural occurrence and the progressive move forward keeps the intrigue and palpability at a constant high. All personal incredulity toward a new author dissolved away within just the first few pages. Connie is not only a full realized protagonist but her relatability is striking. The style itself is more Gillian Flynn or Michael Chabon than Sparks or Steele, and the novel is better for it.Even though the subject may seem controversial to some, Osborne makes the situation seem more pedestrian that one would imagine. Connie’s struggles as she grows older and the difficulties she has with the other wives become real and conspicuous dilemmas that, in our own way, many of us can easily parallel. The metaphorical references to frogs may seem odd to the uninitiated but once you absorb yourself into the novel, the analogous nature of the two is easily distilled. Also, you are a fan of writing that can paints a perfect picture in your mind, then you will definitely love this book all the more.In summation, I thoroughly enjoyed this novel by Ms. Osborne and cannot wait to see what she comes up with next. I have no doubt that you will feel the same way.

More than 140 years ago, Mark Twain observed that the Civil War had "uprooted institutions that were centuries old, changed the politics of a people, transformed the social life of half the country, and wrought so profoundly upon the entire national character that the influence cannot be measured short of two or three generations". In fact five generations have passed, and Americans are still trying to measure the influence of the immense fratricidal conflict that nearly tore the nation apart.

In The War that Forged a Nation, Pulitzer Prize-winning historian James M. McPherson considers why the Civil War remains so deeply embedded in our national psyche and identity. The drama and tragedy of the war, from its scope and size - an estimated death toll of 750,000, far more than the rest of the country's wars combined - to the nearly mythical individuals involved - Abraham Lincoln, Robert E. Lee, Stonewall Jackson - help explain why the Civil War remains a topic of interest. But the legacy of the war extends far beyond historical interest or scholarly attention.

McPherson ultimately proves the impossibility of understanding the issues of our own time unless we first understand their roots in the era of the Civil War. From racial inequality and conflict between the North and South to questions of state sovereignty or the role of government in social change - these issues, McPherson shows, are as salient and controversial today as they were in the 1860s.

Thoughtful, provocative, and authoritative, The War That Forged a Nation looks anew at the reasons America's Civil War has remained a subject of intense interest for the past century and a half and affirms the enduring relevance of the conflict for America today.

By AmazonFan The War That Forged a Nation: Why the Civil War Still Matters is a collection of essays by author James McPherson, who is considered one of the preeminent scholars on the subject. His Pulitzer Prize winning Battle Cry of Freedom is still considered to be the definitive book on the Civil War.With the exception of two chapters, the essays have all been previously published and cover a multitude of aspects of the conflict. Each is well written and informative but as some others have noted don't really answer the central question posed by the subtitle.McPherson fans will have likely already read most of the material here but for others, there is much to be learned in the vignettes. But I think the subtitle does the book a disservice since it is not an accurate representation of its contents and anyone looking for an answer to that question, particularly in light of the tension-filled race relations of today, will be left wondering why the Civil War still matters. If you forget about the subtitle and read this as an introduction to McPherson's insightful essays on the Civil War, you will not be disappointed.

The chapter on the Mexican War and the conflict over the expansion of slavery into the territories was one of the best sections By Ms Winston James McPherson has compiled a series of short essays, some never before published, on the issue of why, 150 years after it ended, the American Civil War still resonates in the memory of many Americans. 2015 marks the end of the 150th anniversary observances, yet I believe that interest in the war (the causes of the war, the events of the war itself, and the aftermath) has never been higher. As the author points out, correctly in my estimation, the interest now is far more intense than it was in the 1960s when the 100th anniversary was observed. As some one who was in high school and college during that time period, I remember that current events overshadowed the observance -- the Civil Rights movement, the Cuban Missile Crisis, the death of President John F Kennedy, followed by the murders of Martin Luther King Jr and Robert Kennedy. McPherson touches on these issues very briefly and also mentions the 13th and 14 Amendments to the Constitution, the latter of which still can cause controversy today, as provisions have been applied to the American-born children ("anchor babies") of people who have entered the United States illegally.McPherson in some regards brushes over the issue of secession as though it were, in his words, a "settled matter," but as one who regularly visits Civil War web sites and blogs, I can tell you that for some the issue is still as alive today as it was in 1860. There are even people today who question that the U.S. Constitution is a binding document because the original intent of the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia was to amend the Articles of Confederation. They are sometimes the same people who denigrate Lincoln as a "dictator" and they are not confined to the southern states, but rather represent a political point of view that, in my opinion, is antithetical to the aims of the original Republican Party. This is an issue that could have been covered in real depth in this book, but was not. It, along with the 20th century near deification of Confederate General R. E. Lee and the denigration of Union General U. Grant, has been explored in greater depth in other works, but are glossed over in McPherson's latest book. The chapter on the Mexican War and the conflict over the expansion of slavery into the territories was one of the best sections of the book, as the compromisers (Henry Clay being the most famous) began to fall away, either due to death or what some have said was just people getting tired of talking to each other and never getting a permanent fix. The fact that pro-slavery Southerners dominated in so many aspects of national government, coupled with weak presidents, is covered fairly extensively for such a slender book. The section on the concept of a just war is covered as well -- the justification for going to war and the conduct during the war. In the popular imagination, Union General Sherman generally gets the brunt of criticism for the famous march to the sea, while the average person probably knows little or nothing about the massacre of the United States Colored Troops by confederate troops at Ft Pillow and at Petersburg. McPherson points out that in the case of Ft Pillow confederate General Nathan Bedford Forrest was present and did not stop his troops, any more than did Lee in the aftermath of the Battle of the Crater. The issue of civilian casualties vs military casualties, one of the reasons why Sherman's march tends to linger in the popular imagination, is covered briefly.McPherson explores the always controversial issue of Lincoln and his views on slavery, which is still today being debated in some quarters. Those who dislike Lincoln tend to endlessly comb his writings and what he said, or was supposed to have said, about "the Negro race" as it was called then. Was Lincoln a racist is discussed is discussed in this chapter, although not in depth because it is a short book, with what I see as McPherson coming down on the side of "no, he was not," but rather a political strategist .. a point of view that Frederick Douglass came to appreciate in his later years. There are other chapters on military aspects that those who are interested in the battles over the political and social aspects on the conflict will perhaps enjoy more and have your own set of opinions to debate. While I give this book four stars, I think that I am somewhat disappointed that more links to the controversies of today were not explored by the author. The election of the first bi-racial president in 2008, while of great important, has not brought about the post-racial society that many though it would..and race has once again become a major political and social issue in the 21st century. I recommend this book as a jumping off place for more in depth discussions of the war and its continued resonance in our country.

Though world history in all its flavors enjoys generous shelf space, two periods occupy the greatest share. World War II and, especially, the American Civil War retain unmatched holds on American imaginations, in ways that bespeak our identity as a nation. If the Revolution created the American state, the Civil War created the American People. Its legacy remains very present, 150 years later.Princeton historian James McPherson, whose half-century career has helped shape current attitudes about the Civil War, purposes here not to create a new history of the American Civil War, but to ruminate upon its import. This proves valuable because, reading along, it’s impossible to miss the resonances between the history McPherson describes, and today’s live issues. In McPherson’s telling, the past is present, and something we must wrestle with to this day.Why did General Grant and Admiral Farragut succeed, while General McClellan and Admiral DuPont failed? The traits which defined our winning commanders still describe what characteristics we seek in politicians, business professionals, and other leaders. Or, how about this question: who freed the slaves? Most Americans reflexively say “Abraham Lincoln” or “the Thirteenth Amendment,” but McPherson musters diverse evidence proving this question defies any single simple answer.McPherson traffics, not in knowledge, but in debates. Many essays respond to, or argue with, other historians, whose opinions and interpretations reveal how hotly contested the Civil War’s heritage remains. These responses sometimes seem inconsistent. In one essay, he disputes Yale theologian Harry Stout’s assertion that the Union cannot claim Just War status under conventional Christian mores. McPherson systematically dismantles Stout’s facts, and presents a persuasive counter-argument.His very next essay, however, rejects Mark Neely’s account that the Civil War was characterized by “remarkable restraint.” Though McPherson says General Sherman “did not even commit the ‘wanton pillage’ of Southern legend,” he nevertheless cannot countenance the claim that a war which killed two percent of the American population showed “restraint.” Thus McPherson demonstrates his greatest point, that the Civil War resists pat answers and simple nationalistic bromides. One essay, “Lincoln, Slavery, and Freedom,” describes how, throughout the war, the Union’s core motivating issue evolved, and with it, the American principle of freedom. North and South were divided by competing definitions of freedom: Southern slaveholders believed Northern regulation impeded economic freedom, the freedom of wealthy individuals to own and exploit other human beings. McPherson quotes Southern documents that precisely echo contemporary Tea Party definitions of freedom.Elsewhere, an essay about General George McClellan, America’s youngest General-in-Chief ever, presents a stark split. McClellan succeeded Winfield Scott in command because his will to execute swift, unambiguous action apparently provided the moral backbone Lincoln demanded. Except, once he assumed command, this gentleman soldier became paranoid, indecisive, and timid. The change in McClellan highlights the gulf between American peacetime and wartime cultures. And McPherson’s final essay stretches beyond the war itself. Radical Republicans attempted to force justice into Southern law, but declared victory around 1877, and went home. Southern Democrats then wrote bigotry, exploitation, and injustice into their laws—laws which remained enforced a full century after fighting ended. Some economic firebrands have attempted, recently, to roll back history to those post-Reconstruction times, forcing McPherson, and us, to ask: who really won the war? This slim book, under 170 pages plus back matter, doesn’t pretend to resolve every question the Civil War raises. Not really a single book, but a collection of twelve essays, McPherson assumes readers’ prior familiarity with Civil War history. His broad view stretches from the war’s roots, in the racialized propaganda of the Mexican-American war, to Reconstruction’s long shadow, when the Confederates who lost the war arguably won the peace. For James McPherson, history isn’t dead accumulations of facts. History encompasses debates about motivations, ways living societies define concepts like “justice” and “freedom,” and what bedrock principles make America truly American. To McPherson, the American state may have begun in 1776 (or 1789), but the American nation, the people who define themselves according to consistent principles and just laws, achieved adulthood between 1861 and 1865.Now, McPherson never explicitly highlights the similarities between Civil War history and the present. He never comments directly upon current events; his historical ruminations only unfold through the Civil Rights Movement, and then only briefly. But he needn’t actually say any more. Attentive readers will observe that, on multiple issues—gun control, economic restraint, leadership, and more—the past is, in McPherson’s telling, visibly present.

Edgar Beecher Bronson (1856–1917) was a Nebraska rancher, a West Texas cattleman, an African big-game hunter, a serious photographer and starting late in life, an author of fiction and personal memoirs. NO one will say that the life of Edgar Beecher Bronson was not packed with adventure. He began his out-of-doors and venturesome career as a western cowman, going into the cattle country from New York a very tender tenderfoot. Mr. Bronson's search for thrills led him to undertake many daring feats. The years of his young manhood—fifteen in all—were spent in New Mexico and Wyoming, as a ranchman, and it was during this time that he was able to collect the material for many of his books, the most popular of which probably is "'Reminiscences of a Ranchman." Like Theodore Roosevelt, Mr. Bronson was a sickly youth, and the years he spent in the saddle overcoming odds in the form of hostile Indians, rustlers, outlaws and blizzards and storms of the prairies, benefited him physically in the same way it did the former President. Mr. Bronson gives an eyewitness account of the last Sioux Sun Dance which by itself makes the book worth reading. His eyewitness account of Dull Knife's heroic fight to lead the Cheyenne 700 miles from their Oklahoma reservation, where they were starving, to the nortern plains where they were finally captured ranks as one of the greatest stories of courage ever told. This man was alive, and intelligent enough to write about a time in our history, when our country was changing. His writing records this time the way Charlie Russell did with paint and canvas.

Reminescences of a Ranchman By Goral That very real ranchman was also a talented writer, skillfully using various styles, according to the circumstances being described, ranging from insightful historical records, to the realistic scenes recording the spoken language of the lowest-of-the-low characters populating the Wild West in the second half of the nineteen century. His lively style makes the reader feel a part of those numerous actions. But the most important fact about this book is that nowhere else one can read such a detailed desription of the most noble, desperate and doomed struggle of a small group of the Native American "Indians", trying to survive the genocide.

Very good information in this book By John Keep Very good information in this book.....I could have done without all the heavily accented quotes of what someone supposedly said 50 years before the writing but overall a very entertaining and informative narrative.
