Diaspora Judians suffered onerous religious persecution within Spain's Iberian Peninsula then under the rule of Visagoths prior to its invasion and conquest in 711 CE by the Muslim Moors. That changed soon after their new Al-Andulas Muslim rulers, who chose to rule from Cordoba, encouraged their non-Muslim Judian and Christian inhabitants to join with Muslims as dhimmis or "People of the Book" who were to be protected under Islamic law. While Judean dhimmis were taxed they along with Christian dhimmis cohorts began to prosper upon being able to freely use their trade skills, religious practices, and professions jointly with those of Muslim inhabitants within a proactive cultural atmosphere under which significant artistic achievements also evolved for an additional 355 years until 1066 CE, when extreme Muslim rulers replaced the Al-Andulas Moor rulers, thereby bring an end to the period cited by scholars as the " Golden Age of Jewry" and which was first witnessed by visiting Italian Jesuits known to have traveled to Al-Andulas Spain in the 9th century. While the majority of its Italian populous still remained subject to MIddle Age cultural and religious practices, it is believed that the visiting Jesuits in reporting their remarkable findings to colleagues and others, including a small, elite group of wealthy Italian merchants and nobles who began served as patrons of local artists, thereby initiating an interest in collectiing which ultimately grew into the early Renaissance period which began to flourish in 14th century Italy among upper class elites. Beginning with the massacre of Judians in 1066 CE, religious persecution of Judians continue unabated under strict Muslim rule and followed thereafter under Spanish "Reconquista" monarchs King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella, following the defeat of all Muslim rulers, all Hudians and Muslims were required in 1492 CE to either convert to Christanity, to be expelled or killed. Readers will also learn that so-called popular myths surrounding the role undertaken by Christopher Colombus who ventured abroad to establish a yet undiscovered route to India for the benefit above cited Spanish Monarchs also in 1492 CE are now believed to be false following extensive research by numerous, well known Spanish and other cited historical scholars which will no doubt be of great interest to our readers.

Nevertheless, I still cling to the faint hope that just a little of that wonderful story is based upon something real. For the Jewish People there was a time and place that one might think of as resembling Camelot and it is lovingly referred to as the Golden Age by Jews as well as many Muslims and Christians. The place was Southern Spain, the time --according to Mel Meckler, was 711-1066 CE and the rulers were Muslims, Moors to be a bit more precise. Muslims, Jews and Christian and others lived in harmony. Education was encouraged, scholarship admired, the arts loved and people lived together in peace and with mutual respect.Alas, it was not a perfect time or place -- Camelot is, after all, a legend -- but in this modern era of constant conflict and intolerance we might be wise to take another look at "The Golden Age 711-1066 CE". And Mel Meckler is an excellent tour guide.

"Spain's Golden Age from 711 to 1066 CE" By Lothar If you want to learn about the 2000 years of Spain’s diverse and gruesome history this meticulously researched book gives you a clear picture of her religiously directed past.If you want to learn about the 2000 years of Spain's diverse and gruesome history, this meticulously researched book gives you a clear picture of her religiously directed past. From Franks, Visegoths to Moors and later Catholic domination the persecution and killings of the populations is chronicled in detail. The most amazing time was Spain’s Golden Age from 711 to 1066 CE when the ruling Muslims, under Sharia law, permitted Jews and Christians, considered “people of the book”, to trade and cooperate with the Arabs.Another interesting and inspiring book by Mel Meckler. By Rose Fortaleza I am lucky to own a hard copy of this primer "Once Upon A Hometown." I used this in one of the invited teachings with Filipino/Canadian schoolgraders in Toronto, ages 6-12 years old. I knew it was greatly appreciated by both students and parents themselves because they commented that they have learned about the Philippines' history and culture in the 30 minutes I sat down with them more than they have acquired knowledge in the past. It is an incredible primer with admirable illustrations and a very good buy!

As the FBI closes in on the Las Vegas underworld, Daniel Faust - grifter, thief, and sorcerer - isn't the only one feeling the heat. Half-demon racket boss Nicky Agnelli is fighting to hang on to his empire, leaving a trail of dead informants in his wake, while Daniel's ex-girlfriend, Jennifer, rallies her forces on the street and aims her sights at Nicky's crown.

Meanwhile, homeless people are vanishing by the dozens. Daniel has bigger problems to worry about, but a plea from an old friend sends him on a search for answers. What he finds is a conspiracy 20 years in the making, involving a power-hungry senator, occult experiments, murderous British mercenaries...and Lauren Carmichael, Daniel's nemesis.

From a gunfight in the Arizona badlands to unearthing buried secrets in a New York laboratory, the hunt is on. With Lauren's deadly plan revealed and time running out, Daniel and his crew will stop at nothing to take her down. She's got the law in her pocket and a hired army at her back. He's got black magic, bullets, and the art of the con. It's high noon in Vegas, and when the dust settles, only one side will be left standing.

May the best villain win.

Solid, but Not Spectacular By Jason Waldman While not quite as thrilling as the first two books in the series, "The Living End" helps bring a chapter in the Daniel Faust saga to a relatively satisfying conclusion. The story starts with a bang, as Faust runs into a trap set by his nemesis Lauren Carmichael. After narrowly escaping, Faust sets out to figure out how to stop Lauren's plan to basically wipe most of humanity from the face of the earth. Along the way, he uncovers a conspiracy to kidnap and experiment on the homeless, the secret behind the smoke-faced men from the first two books and the connection to a powerful U.S. Senator. As before, Schaefer shows a real knack for explaining things without making it seem like exposition. In particular, his use of a couple of key new characters to reveal some of the great mysteries that came up in the first couple of books really helps put the pieces into place. The sections on the mythology of Faust's world are fascinating and very descriptive without making you feel like you've stumbled upon some alien world. In addition, Schaefer knows how to write an action sequence in a way that will get your adrenaline going.Unfortunately, where Schaefer is less successful is in his inclusion of the aforementioned U.S. Senator, who seems to have just been thrown in there as a commentary about greed and ambition. That part of the story arc felt forced in a way that hadn't occurred in previous books. I also felt like there wasn't the conflict between Faust and his friends that we've seen in previous books. That made the interactions Faust had with them feel more flat than they had previously.Overall, though, this was still a very fun, very quick read and a solid ending to the Lauren Carmichael saga. While I'm sad to see it end, I'm intrigued by what future adventures await Daniel Faust.

It's gritty, it's dirty, it's raw and completely addictive.Daniel is the perfect lead. He is neither Hero, nor Villian. He doesn't have a preachy moral compass. He isn't shy about killing when killing is the best option. He doesn't stop, and he doesn't forget.Props to Schaefer in making his stories a perfect blend to the reality of life. Not everything ends with everyone happy and alive. Not ever day ends in rainbows and puppies. Sometimes, sometimes the best you can get is a gloomy shade of grey. Can't wait for the next.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Its a clever read with not too good heroes and even worse villains By Albert E. Ulak Its a clever read with not too good heroes and even worse villains. Setting it in and around Vegas creates an easily relate-able vibe that trades on the city's gangster's as good guys history and the sense of mystique the city holds. Veges always feels like it can't be real, and it's not quite letting you on the secrets. Memorable supporting characters litter the story, like a demon temptress who always orders for everyone at restaurants, because... well, she knows what they want. The action moves along smoothly, and offers enough twists so it isn't predictable, while it still delivers enough on expectations to satisfy. Looking forward to the next installment.

This generously illustrated volume features Mark Bradford's newest work which deals with the body and the performance of identity. Mark Bradford's layered, multi-textured paintings have earned him wide critical acclaim. His latest body of work comprises a new group of paintings and a video, each of which cycles around the idea of the body in crisis. Bradford witnessed the LA riots (1992) from his studio and has translated the fury, fear, outrage, pandemonium, and lasting wounds into artworks. This volume reproduces in full new paintings in which Bradford carved into the layered surface of the work creating depressions and arteries that structure these otherwise abstract compositions. Bradford's new video references the history of black standup comedy taking on Eddie Murphy's controversial concert film "Delirious" (1983). In the video Bradford takes on Murphy's searing comments on sexuality, reinterpreting this important cultural moment while considering the modalities of gender and its performance. Accompanying texts include Bradford's trenchant performance script and a scholarly text by Butler explores Bradford's critique of pervasive cultural racism and homophobia in society as a whole.

The idea that Jesus was married continues to incite fierce debate. But most who address the topic either dismiss the possibility or propound conspiracy theories. Amid the storm of controversy, Le Donne provides a haven of clarity and sense. Approaching the subject from a fresh, historical perspective, Le Donne places Jesus firmly within a socio-cultural context and, by investigating gender and marriage norms, provocatively argues that Jesus could well have been married – although not to Mary Magdalene.

The Wife of Jesus: Ancient Texts and Modern Scandals, by Anthony Le Donne

Review 'A marvellous survey of ancient and modern attitudes toward Jesus' possible marriage.' Maclean's 'An impressive work from beginning to end, "The Wife of Jesus: Ancient Texts and Modern Scandals" is a fascinating, informed, informative, and iconoclastic work that is as thoughtful and thought-provoking as it is well written and presented. Enhanced with extensive notes, an impressive nine page bibliography, and a reference index as well as a subject index, [it] is highly recommended reading and will make an enduringly popular addition to community and academic library Christian Studies collections.' The Midwest Book Review 'Reasonable, provocative [and] courageous... Le Donne reaches his conclusion with much careful thought and analysis.' Chicago Tribune "Despite a subject matter that is sure to be provocative, Le Donne manages not to take sides but also reminds readers that our ideas on Jesus' sexuality and marital status show more about us than they do about him. A welcome resource and fresh voice." Kirkus Reviews "Anthony Le Donne balances strong scholarship with sensitivity as he lays out the possibilities in The Wife of Jesus: Ancient Texts and Modern Scandals. This is an eminently readable book for nonspecialists and specialists alike that contributes to the discussion with clarity and candor even as it challenges readers to ask what it is about ourselves that we might learn from our curiosity and concern." Publishers Weekly

About the Author Anthony Le Donne is a visiting lecturer at the University of the Pacific, California. He completed his Ph.D at Durham University, England, in 2007 and his books include "The Historiographical Jesus: Memory, Typology, and the Son of David" and "Historical Jesus: What Can We Know and How Can We Know It?" He lives in Sebastopol, CA.

16 of 16 people found the following review helpful. A Responsible Historiography By Ben Sutton Anthony Le Donne has provided interested readers with a double blessing. In The Wife of Jesus, the initial intrigue of Jesus' marital status gives way to a crash course in responsible historical inquiry.Le Donne's expressed goal is two-fold: to provide arguments for and against the possibility of a married Jesus (p. 7), and to provide a self-critique of a culture so captivated by the scandal of Jesus' sex-life (p. 8).To accomplish these goals Le Donne begins with a sketch of the prevalence of sexual insecurity, which is the likely candidate for the enduring memory of a celibate Jesus. This is followed by a series of chapters examining the development of various non-celibate pictures of Jesus in the last 2,000 years. These pictures are the result of individuals or groups who project their current circumstances and struggles onto the life of Jesus by retelling stories from the Gospels (which contain the closest historical evidence for Jesus' life). By retelling stories of Jesus, each group or individual can `create' affirmation for whatever position they hold. The repeated theme of the book is that our current situation will inevitably influence how we interpret the past. The problem with these portrayals of Jesus is not necessarily that they construct a Jesus which reflects their perspective, it is that they do so without appropriate consideration for the context of Jesus' life.Le Donne proceeds cautiously--surveying the available ancient documents which provide a picture into the expectations and values current in Jesus' time. It is only after this cultural background is understood that the teachings of Jesus can be examined and contemporary pictures assessed for historical plausibility. The unexpected result is a subversively celibate Jesus, who may be as unpalatable to Christians for his opposition to blood-relatives (Jesus emphasizes the spiritual `family of God') as a married Jesus. If offence is taken either way this book should be a wake-up call to assess the assumptions we may have about Jesus. Le Donne doesn't just provide a tentative answer to a difficult question. He demonstrates the kind of sustained effort it takes to answer historical questions responsibly, while calling all people to examine their cultural frameworks for traditions that might be better forgotten.Engaging, concise, and well-researched, this is a quick read that gives a substantial return on investment.

13 of 14 people found the following review helpful. Thorough, Relevant, Accessible By Mitchell Chilcott No other book better investigates the historical question of the wife of Jesus.Anthony Le Donne's work is thorough, meeting the demands of modern historiographical research and providing lengthy discussions of relevant topics, such as asceticism in the first century, western notions of sexuality, interpretations of Jesus' celibacy throughout history, and ancient texts related to the wife of Jesus. However, this book is much more than a discussion of ancient texts. Last year's announcement of a small Coptic papyrus, quickly named "The Gospel of Jesus' Wife," spurred newspaper articles, blog posts, and op-eds related to this topic. However, it also brought about new discussions of our own sexual culture and how that might impact the historical inquiry of Jesus' sexual identity. This book is born out of that kind of dialogue. The accessibility of this book is one of its greatest qualities. Explanations of key terms, cultural references, and brilliant illustrations all serve to make the content of the book understandable to those not well-read in the discipline. And yet, Le Donne provides substantial arguments, reaching defensible conclusions that are characteristic of careful biblical and historical scholarship.Devoid of obfuscating prose and not overly technical, Le Donne's writing style will engage the casual reader as well as the tenured New Testament scholar.Mitchell Chilcottduke.academia.edu/MitchellChilcott

15 of 17 people found the following review helpful. Was Jesus scandalous? Yes, but not as most people think. By Loren Rosson III In this terrific and accessible book, Le Donne argues that many Christians have been right for the wrong reasons. While the gospels don't say that Jesus had a wife, neither do they say he didn't, and silence means nothing. Marriage was a cultural given in Jesus' time and place, the most important way of honoring parents, and the path to economic integrity and manhood. It was considered necessary for survival, and so we should assume that Jesus was married unless we have reason to believe otherwise.Though that last is admittedly the rub. In scrutinizing the New Testament, it appears that Jesus was abnormal -- not on account of being too holy for sex, says Le Donne, but for having wild ideas about honor and family. By his 30s at least (i.e. by the time of his gospel ministry), he was dishonoring his blood ties and reshaping a spiritual family around him. He had embraced many (though not all) of the ascetic and non-conformist teachings of his mentor John the Baptist. He lived as if the world was coming to an end, and provision for future generations (family property rights secured through marriage) wasn't a part of his message. He said there were different kinds of eunuchs -- those who lack reproductive organs, but also those who choose celibacy for the sake of God's kingdom (Mt 19:12). "In all of these ways, Jesus subverted civic masculinity and quite possibly the institution of marriage, which stood at the center of civic masculinity (p 128)."Le Donne allows that Jesus may well have been married prior to becoming a prophet. It's more plausible that he was married in his 20s and that his wife died in childbirth (as was extremely common), than that he would have shamefully dishonored his family by rejecting the Abrahamic blessing of progeny. Only by the time of his itinerant prophetic career was he engaged in the flagrant dishonor of severing blood ties. Of course, from his radical point of view, he wasn't being dishonorable at all: he thought of his disciples and followers as his true family; his blood relations weren't even real. The gospels are replete on this point, and Le Donne discusses all the relevant passages. Jesus declares that his family members are not biological kin, but those who do the will of God (Mt 12:46-50; cf. Mk 3:31-35; Lk 8:19-21); that he hasn't come to bring peace but a sword -- "to set a man against his father, and a daughter against her mother"; that if you loved your biological family more than him, you were unworthy (Mt 10:34-36); indeed you had to hate your biological family to be a disciple (Lk 14:26). Following Jesus meant surrendering economic and social security, sacrificing inheritance rights, hating your family, and living like a shameful itinerant. Le Donne notes the irony that many modern Christians who see Jesus as "above sex" tend to be the same who champion "family values", which Jesus clearly had no use for.The Wife of Jesus is a sober analysis devoid of sensationalism, but don't fear: sensationalist claims are addressed by the author, which makes the book fun (and amusing at times) to read. He covers the recent hoax of the Jesus' Wife fragment, noting that whoever forged it had internet access to a source with a typographical error which the forger copied. He even discusses the Secret Mark hoax, which of course depicted a gay Jesus. He traces the evolution of Mary Magdalene, who began in the gospels as a follower of Jesus, was later cast a prostitute by the church, and in recent years became the actual wife of Jesus (in the hack novel by Dan Brown). It's a concise and well-written book that couldn't be more timely, and I hope many people will read it.

Excerpt from The History of Rome, Vol. 1Dr. Theodor Mommsen's researches into the languages, laws, and institutions of ancient Rome and Italy are now so well known and appreciated by the best scholars of this country, that it may seem presumptuous on my part to step forward for the purpose of introducing his work on Roman history to the English public. I should indeed have been glad to leave this duty to others, or have allowed the book to take its own chance, feeling quite sure that no words of mine are likely to attract readers, and that the work itself, in its English garb, will become as popular in this country as it is in the land of its birth. But several years ago, I was applied to by more than one enthusiastic admirer of Dr. Mommsen in Germany to do something towards making his History of Borne known in this country, and a repeated perusal of the German original led me to the conviction that its author richly deserved the admiration of his countrymen. I accordingly felt it both a duty and a pleasure, some years back, to prevail upon my friend, Mr. George Robertson, to give to the public at least a specimen of the book, in an English translation of the first, or introductory chapters, on the early inhabitants of Italy - a subject on which no man is better entitled to be listened to with respect and attention than Dr. Mommsen. The specimen which was then published would, I hoped, create a desire for the whole work, and in this hope I have not been disappointed. The result is the present translation; of its merits it does not become me to speak in this place.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. It is full of historical facts, perfect description of political and cultural situation of the Empire at that particular point of time in history. Mommsen puts lot of personal opinion into it, but it is something that can be overseen. Pure knowledge. Highly recommend.

A VARIETY OF COMMENTATORS ON THIS PERIOD, AND LATER By Steven H Propp Burton Folsom is also the author of books such as The Myth of the Robber Barons: A New Look at the Rise of Big Business in America, New Deal or Raw Deal?: How FDR's Economic Legacy Has Damaged America, FDR Goes to War: How Expanded Executive Power, Spiraling National Debt, and Restricted Civil Liberties Shaped Wartime America, etc. This 1996 book contains essays from a wide variety of individuals, such as Murray Rothbard; Henry Hazlitt; Ludwig von Mises; F.A. Hayek; Hans Sennholz; Mark Skousen, etc. They are topically categorized as Theories and Theorists; The Industrial Revolution and Its Consequences; and The Case for Free Trade.John Chodes wrote, "The Corn Laws displayed another characteristic of governmental controls: Regulations and subsidies in one area led to manipulation in other areas." (Pg. 35)Henry Hazlitt observes in his commments on Marx/Engel's 'Communist Manifesto' that they frequently mention how competition between the workers undermines their solidarity and reduces wages, "But they never once acknowledge the existence of competition among employers for workers." (Pg. 48)Lawrence Reed quotes Engels' own comments on the famous/infamous Sadler Report, where Engels wrote in The Condition of the Working Class in England (Oxford World's Classics), "This is a very partisan document, which was drawn up entirely by enemies of the factory system for purely political purposes. Sadler was led astray by his passionate sympathies into making assertions of a most misleading and erroneous kind." (Pg. 64)Bettina Greaves notes, "When compared with her nineteenth-century counterpart, the modern housewife is truly liberated from grinding household drudgery and endless kitchen chores." (Pg. 91)Thomas DiLorenzo observes, "It is no coincidence that some of America's most lethargic unionized industries---steel, automobiles, footwear, rubber, textiles---are also among the most heavily protected." (Pg. 139)

He is called “El Duque.” No one knows his real name. Only vague descriptions and fuzzy photos of him exist. What is known about him is that he is the up-and-coming power in the converging underworlds of guerrilla warfare, spies, terrorists, and organized crime. He is known to have ties with Islamist extremists, Communist guerrillas, drug cartels, gun runners…if it is involved in global chaos, he has a hand in it. Now Praetorian Security has been contracted to hunt him down. Jeff Stone and his team pick up the scent in northern Mexico. But the closer they get, the more elusive El Duque seems to become. Jeff and his compatriots have long since learned that in the shadowy world of modern conflict, little is ever exactly what it seems. But as the manhunt leads them into some of the darkest, most lawless corners of the Western Hemisphere, they come upon an explosive revelation that changes everything. No one is coming out the other side of this mission the same. The Special Operations contractors of Praetorian Security go to the darkest corners of the world, to face the worst that the underworld of modern conflict has to offer. "Nealen has been there, done that. This book rings true, feels right. It will put you there, and when you get back you won't be the same. It's that good." -Jim Morris, Author of "War Story" and "The Devil's Secret Name"

By claudette valliere Another great read by Nealen Spoiler alert for those who don't want to know what's in the book. This one starts with Jeff Stone, one of the team leaders for Praetorean Solutions and his team in Arizona headed into Mexico. Most of Jeff's team and he have most of their experience in the Middle East. Mexico is pretty much a mystery to all. He does know drug cartels, crooked cops and crooked politicians run quite a bit of Mexico and its not an easy place for Americans to be. Tourists are welcome but not armed mercenaries like Jeff and his team. They will have to be very careful in Mexico. The mission is to escort two box trucks loaded with who know what to Northern Mexico. The convoy is hit in Arizona by MS-13 gangbangers even before they get to the border. Jeff decides they need to back up and rethink how they enter Mexico.Once they get into Mexico they are hit twice more by MS-13 before they are able to take the cargo where its supposed to go.Jeff has had a bad feeling about this mission from almost the start. The feeling their route has been leaked because those MS-13 gangbangers set up ambush's and seemed to know the route the convoy would travel. Coincidence?? Not hardly in Jeff's opinion. The convoy was a cover mission to get the team into Mexico. Jeff's real target is a man called Le Duque. A man no one has ever seen. No pictures exist yet this man is supposed to be a big player in all things drug related in Mexico. Jeff's mission is to find this La Duque character and get info from him. No one outside the team, the teams officials, those owning the contents of the trucks and the Network knew the route or the players. It was the Network, via Renton, who urged them to take this mission. Renton has been in contact with Jeff and advised that his Southern sources have dried up. Jeff and his team are mainly on their own and Jeff is having a hard time deciding whether he trusts Renton and the Network or not. He's leaning toward NOT.So begins one damned fine read. This one has Jeff, Larry, Ben, Derek, the rest of his team, drug cartels, ambush's, the Chinese, a man named Gray who gives Jeff a heads up, a Gray who's one very dangerous man a man who decides he can help, a man with many contacts and abilities, the man called La Duque and what Gray tells Jeff about him, the dismantling of a drug cartel, murder, Renton, the deaths of two members of the team, another team headed their way, the scuttling of two ships, Mexico, Nicaragua, the Frontier Rose, helicopters, crooked police, bribery which is a way of life in Mexico, a Jeff who's thoughts of a leak turn out to be true, the Network that's set the team up, a Renton who was set up as well, a woman named Mia, a man named Janson who almost gets killed by one pissed off Jeff and Renton and Jeff Stone and his team doing what it takes to kill the bad guys, survive and make it home.Five Stars and then some. Awesome read.

This one is neither. This one is utterly brilliant.Peter Nealen’s backdrop of a world in political and economic chaos is a perfect setting for this high-speed, ultra-violent adventure. Except for narrator-protagonist Jeff Stone, his Praetorian Solutions trigger-pullers don’t get a lot of characterization...but they don’t need much.I hope Nealen will continue this series, as he’s left the Praetorians in an ambiguous strategic situation. The intelligence they’ve been fed has been deliberately vague, and in some aspects false. Their primary contact with their funders and dispatchers, Renton, is no longer clearly trustworthy. It’s not even clear that they have a mission, except for what Albert Camus said near the end of “The Plague:” there are plagues and there are victims, and the part of a good man is to avoid joining forces with the plagues. There’s much work for the Praetorians. I hope Peter Nealen will let them do it.Highly recommended!

I liked the switch to Latin America, as I think that is more relevant today than the Middle East, but that's just a personal opinion. One aspect I think he could have integrated is the conversion rate of people in Latin America to Islam. Pre-9/11, this was a big topic amongst people from my evangelical Christian background. At the time, it was more about spreading Christianity and concern for souls, though now it could conceivably be spun in a more sinister light. It's been well over ten years since I read up on that, so I'm not sure the trend has continued, though my guess is that it has.Regardless, I enjoyed the book, perhaps more than his others.
