When Oso is yanked off his motorcycle and killed by a closed parking lot chain, Billy feels guilty for having taught him to hop curbs and shortcut traffic lights. Billy's survivor's guilt drags him down a spiral of excessive alcohol, reckless driving, one-night stands, and body painting. He's now all too aware that life is short - play hard.

Meanwhile, Oso's former girlfriend, Lindy, pours her grief into her new folk-rock album as she struggles with whether she can ever let herself love again. Can she turn this personal tragedy into something meaningful through her music?

Pushing Leaves Towards the Sun explores survivor's guilt and grief through reckless adventure, a dozen original songs, and fiction. When you've lost someone you love, there are no easy answers.

This novel is intended for adults. It includes some graphic language, sexual situations, and questionable behavior. Recovery from intense loss is a rough road - 100 miles-per-hour on two wheels with no regard for oncoming traffic, as an example.

The story is told from the alternating points of view from Billy (the author), Lindy (Alison Leston), and Dog (Christopher Madden); and each additional character is voiced by a full cast of 36 voice actors.

Welcome to my world of musical fiction.

Cheers, Mark L. Berry

It's even better when everything you read feels so realistic, and you become drawn into the story and its characters. This book deals with one of the hardest emotions that people go thru, and many of us will be able to relate to the ups and downs the characters go thru.DEFINTELY CLICK ON THE LINKS TO THE MUSIC!!! The best part is it also comes with music written FOR THIS BOOK! It's amazing that no one has come up with this concept (if someone has, I have totally missed it!), but it makes the book even better.

In print it is apparently only 51 pages, although it isn't actually available in print, only audio and Kindle.Marina is a world class figure skater and is invited to perform in the hometown of her birth, Sarajevo. She had been adopted by an American couple after the war and it would be the first time that she had visited the country of her birth. It was a good, if brief picture of Sarajevo during the war. The taxi driver explained how things were and pointed out some of the remaining evidence of gunfire and destruction. The description of Marina's skating demonstration was also excellent. On the other hand, I struggled to piece together all the characters and still don't know who exactly Sara was or why Marina seemed not to know her father very well (One of the disadvantages of audio, as it's hard to backtrack). I'm also surprised that Marina decided not to visit the orphanage from which she was adopted, as the reader/listener would obviously be hoping that she would. All in all, I found this to be 'good in parts', interesting, but not particularly memorable.

Ikebana means “living flowers.” This literal meaning discloses a form of artistic expression in which the natural beauty of the flowers and blossoms unfolds in conversation with the artist’s powerful formal language. Fundamental to the art form is a close and contemplative observation of the natural world, which in turn offers itself as a boundless source of inspiration. Minh Häusler studied the Japanese art of ikebana in Singapore and Hong Kong. Steeped in the art form’s long and rich tradition, she has combined this tradition with her own unmistakable style. Today, she is a master of the modern Sogetsu School of Ikebana. The first book on this important artist, Minh Häusler: The Fusion of Flora and Art reproduces in sumptuous full-color more than two hundred photographs of Häusler’s work. Carefully composed by the artist herself, the photographs are stunningly beautiful, the line and color of the flowers redolent with meaning against simple black or white settings. Häusler’s lavish photographs—together with texts that provide insight into the artist’s process—make this a book that will inspire anyone with an appreciation of this beautiful and timeless art. Häusler is a master of her craft, and Minh Häusler: The Fusion of Flora and Art reflects her at the height of her career.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Simply remarkable! By lis krebs This is a book that will swallow you up with its inspiration. Each photo brings you to a different level of understanding in how we perceive nature in both it's delicate state and in it's surprising strength. There are revelations on each and every page that capture your attention. It is simply remarkable!

A TRUE MASTERPIECE By StevieC On a recent trip to Europe, I came across this BEAUTIFUL book.As a lover of flowers, I fell in love with the book, and upon returning home to America, I had to have it. Several more for gifts, too! It is a masterpiece. The book itself is a work of art, the photos inside are breathtaking.Ms. Hausler is a true talent, capturing rare beauty, creating unique photos and kind enough to share her inspiring photos with the world. I look very forward to her next book.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Mesmerizing! By James Hughes Minh Hausler’s The Fusion of Flora and Art is filled with images that seem to energetically rise from the page with a remarkable ability to stimulate the mind. Each composition is a skillful juxtaposition of flora and inanimate components that together form an exquisite homage to nature. The visual impact ranges from the beautiful to the playfully idiosyncratic. The author choreographs a symphony of creative tension, exploration, and improvisation that I find captivating and open to reinterpretation. The images are dynamic as they induce a sense of movement and an appreciation for time and the ephemeral nature of existence. Each composition stands on its own as a work of art. The book is divided into chapters such as The Art of Momentum and In Search of Simplicity. Many images seem initially to be an invitation to meditate, but further observation stimulates curiosity, and then a sense of wonder. It took me less than a minute to decide to purchase this book based on the superb quality of the photographs, and four months later, I am still in the process of discovering it. This process is facilitated by the text. The author is a serious student of life and art. This book makes a beautiful gift (I have already gifted the book to two friends) and I have other friends who, upon reviewing my book, purchased their own copies. My appreciation for this work grows each time I revisit its pages.

*Includes pictures *Includes Gospel accounts of the history *Includes online resources and a bibliography for further reading *Includes a table of contents Herod is one of the more well-known characters of the Bible, as even those with a limited knowledge of the Bible will recognize the name and maybe have some idea of who Herod was. One of the most popular stories, known even to non-Christians, is “Herod’s slaying of the Innocents,” a gruesome part of the Christmas story. Others who may know a little bit more about the Bible will know of the accounts of Herod and John the Baptist, Herod and Jesus, Herod who was eaten by worms and maybe even Herod and Paul. Although Herod doesn’t appear in the Bible very often, it is at critical junctures in New Testament history that readers come across the name, and a casual reader of the Bible might incorrectly assume that each time the name “Herod” is mentioned, the Bible is referring to the same person. In fact, there were actually six different people in the New Testament who were part of this dynasty of “Herods.” From before the birth of Christ until the destruction of Jerusalem, the Herodian Dynasty was the ruling family in Palestine. The family of Herod came from Idumea, so they were considered by some Jews to not be qualified to sit on the throne of David in Jerusalem. However, the close connections of the family with the current Roman emperors and those who were to become emperors kept them in power for almost 100 years. The dynasty started with a celebrated war hero and ended with strong rumors of an incestuous relationship between brother and sister. The power struggles among the aristocracy and the discontent of the populace also characterized the political scene behind the events of New Testament Palestine. The Kingdom of Herod the Great: The History of the Herodian Dynasty in Ancient Israel During the Life of Jesus looks at the life and dynasty of the Judean client king through both Scripture and historical analysis. Along with pictures and a bibliography, you will learn about Herod the Great’s dynasty like never before, in no time at all.

Excellent, if Brief, Historical Narrative of a Despot Whose Rule, Possibly, Perpetuated Christianity By Bill Anderson Length: 46 pages. If you're even just a little like me, you're probably curious about Herod of ancient Israel. And, may I add, confused about which Herod ruled where and when.Well, the first ten pages or so, I suggest you get a firm grip on your hat or it shall sail the trade winds to some far off distant sea. The writer does a good job stirring the pot. Enough to really confuse you. But hang in there, for he does a good job during the next 30 pages.I, at least, am grateful for reading the entire book, for there is solid historical analysis in this brief overview of a mini-dynasty whose rule had a major hand in the volcanic eruption that engulphed Israel and, perhaps, had much to do with the birth of Christianity.Only by reading The Kingdom of Herod the Great can one hope to glimpse the time that witnessed Jesus, the Christ perform his ministry that, once nourished by His followers, the Apostles, would grow into the world's most popular religious group that thrives even now, some 2,000 years after the crucifixion of the founding teacher, whom Christians believe to be the son of God.A book worthy of a space on any historian's bookshelf. A must-read, again and again.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Very good overview By Moon Cat As usual, Charles Rivers gives a clear overview of the machinations of the Herodian Royal Family. And it is quite a complex interweaving of plots, murder, executions, massacre and invasions by Parthians, Egyptians, And most of all Romans. The Herodian Family was as active in killing each other as they were in killing off various Jewish groups, including Jesus and those who followed him. Herod was not only the name of several members of the Royal family but it was used as a title, there being 6 different men during the New Testament period who used this name. This book truly separates them into individuals and clarifies who participated in what actions that are written about in the Bible. In addition, it supplies further information about their motivation and what historically happened to them outside of the Biblical accounts. There are a few points I could argue with, but this is a very fine outline of the period and includes text from Josephus's histories. I only wish a Herodian Genealogy Chart was included with the excellent illustrations.

Their execution is sometimes spotty, but always worth the read. Quick peeks at history...if your interest is piqued (sorry), you can look further. This was particularly well done.

By Donald Hunt And it seems that we have come to the end of the series.Book 4 picks up right where 3 left off, so here we go.Jericho Systems knows of many "Aprils", several dozen at least. They also knew of the "clowns", and even had Fun Houses builtto contain them. Now on the News, there seems to be a couple of clowns still outthere killing people, so it is back to Happytown, to do away with them. But when they get there, a new player has already taken care of theremaining clowns........A REAL CLOWN, named Mad Maxwell. And he scares Ranger Grant to death, as this is not an Urban Legend.he is the REAL DEAL.He is already building up a new Clown Army, and heading for JerichoHead Office. After they attack April, Grant and take Isis, a call for help is made byGrant.Enter, The Hammer. And he will be needed for the fight that is about to start.April tells them both, that she has a bad feeling that this will be her last fight. They all take a deep breath, and attack..........Come along, and join the fight, if you dare.

So when I heard this was the last one all I hoped for was that it wasn't just about tiring up loose ends like so many other final book. I'm happy to say it wasn't. Just like the other three April books this one was action packed from beginning to end. Good job Tim Miller as alway.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Sad it's the final April Almighty Book By hr puffystuff I enjoyed all the clowns, chaos, and carnage this book had to offer. My only complaint is that I don't have any more April Almighty books to look forward to, and in particular no more April / Isis storyline. They were a really great matchup, and I'm sad that it's over. I hope there's more like them in the future from Tim Miller.

This story begins at the moment when it seemed that it was ending: August 9, 1995, the day Jerry Garcia left the mortal coil and many assumed the Grateful Dead's music died with him. Best-selling author Alan Paul conducted dozens of interviews with the surviving members of the band as they found their footing and made peace with the Dead's incredible musical legacy. Reckoning gathers the best of these conversations and abounds with depth and insight. It includes the only interview with Phish/Fare Thee Well guitarist Trey Anasatasio and a member of the Dead (Phil Lesh); extensive, never-published interviews with songwriter Robert Hunter and drummer Bill Kreutzmann; a deep dive with Bob Weir; an insightful talk with Dick Latvala of Dick's Picks fame; and interviews with the guitarists brave enough to stare down the ghost of Jerry: Warren Haynes, Jimmy Herring, John Kadlecik, Steve Kimock and Mark Karan, in addition to Anastasio. "From how songs were written to how disagreements were settled, Alan Paul asks the type of questions every Deadhead wishes he or she could ask of their favorite band. And even better, Alan elicits the honest answers every fan wants to hear from the Dead." -David Browne, author, So Many Roads: The Life and Times of the Grateful Dead "Alan Paul is the rarest kind of music journalist....one who hears beyond the supposed barriers of tradition, style, era, and genre, and perceives the connections and archetypes at the root of all great and innovative music. And then he succinctly lays his discoveries at our feet, so that we may hear beyond the illusions too." -Reed Mathis, bassist, Billy and the Kids, Tea Leaf Green Alan Paul. Review "I suspect that it is his intimate association with the Allman  Brothers has given Alan Paul his knowledgeable but balanced view of the  Grateful Dead.  He's been one of the leading G.D. observers for years, as this  collection proves - connected but not caught up in the mythology.  Anyone who  wants to know the post-Garcia Dead should read this book."-Dennis McNally, Grateful Dead publicist and author of A Long Strange Trip "From how songs were written to how disagreements were settled, Alan Paul asks the type of questions every Deadhead wishes he or she could ask. And even better, Alan elicits the honest answers every fan wants to hear from the Dead."-David Browne, author, So Many Roads: The Life and Times of the Grateful Dead"I've read hundreds of Grateful Dead interviews, and the ones Alan Paul has collected here as a smart, fresh, honest, and musically astute as any I've seen. His exchanges with Phil Lesh, Bob Weir, Robert Hunter, and Bill Kreutzmann complement and update earlier collections and enrich our understanding of the Dead, their project, and their legacy. Insights from Trey Anastasio, Steve Kimock, Mark Karan, John Kadlecik, Warren Haynes, Jimmy Herring and Dick Latvala only sweeten the offering. Required reading for Deadheads."-Peter Richardson, author, No Simple Highway: A Cultural History of the Grateful Dead"Alan Paul is the rarest kind of music journalist - one who hears beyond the supposed barriers of tradition, style, era, and genre, and perceives the connections and archetypes at the root of all great and innovative music. And then he succinctly lays his discoveries at our feet, so that we may hear beyond the illusions too." -Reed Mathis, bassist, Billy and the Kids, Tea Leaf Green

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Highly Recommended By Michael Pilgrim Reckoning: Conversations With the Grateful Dead is an amazing read for hardcore Deadheads and newcomers alike. Each interview is made accessible through a concise, informative preface. Author Alan Paul’s immediate affinity with interview subjects and deep knowledge of the jam band lexicon allow him to elicit profound and revealing responses that would enlighten the most ardent Grateful Dead fan. The largely previously-unpublished collection is tied into a seamless whole by reoccurring motifs such as the effects of commercial success, the larger-than-life charisma of the late Jerry Garcia, the comparison of the Grateful Dead to the Allman Brothers Band, and the collaborative process of group improvisation. Like group improvisation, Reckoning is a case of the whole being even greater than the sum of its parts.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A Fine Collection of Interviews with the Folks Who Still Make the Music By Alan Parker Thornton This is a terrific new book. I've read LOTS of books on these subjects and this has all kinds of info I've never seen before. Most of the interviews were published in drastically shortened form in places like Guitar World. I can't imagine leaving a single question or response out of these conversations, though.Remember when there was a John and Yoko interview in RS years ago and then Jann Wenner released the uncut discussions as a paperback that ran over 100 pages? Well, this is like that but for the Dead, The Other Ones and The Grateful Dead. There's a discussion with Phil and Trey together just for starters. that's like sitting in on a band meeting. Interesting recent conversation with Billy that was really sort of a surprise to me. I didn't know what was going on with him all this time nearly as much as I thought I did.Anyway, the dude is a fine writer and a really insightful interviewer so grab this now and learn stuff that you didn't know that you didn't know about our favorite band.

Carey Jr. I have read much about the Dead and it is always a pleasure to read interviews with the band. Although I already knew some of the information in this book there was much that I read that I was not aware of. As a great admirer of Phil Lesh it was especially nice to read the interview with him. Enjoyable and recommended.

I like the diversity of the writers. My sister's story is one of the 49 and reading it and others bring back memories that remind me of how unique our upbringing was compared to our counterparts in the Lower 48 (states).

A Marine major is one of the orphan ranks, too senior to command a line company, but too junior to command a battalion. Newly promoted to major, Ryck reports for duty as the assistant naval attaché to the Confederation of Free States, the same government whose troops he’d recently fought in the Telchines. Ryck isn’t happy about the assignment, but he buckles down for a long and boring tour of duty. But action seems to follow Ryck, and this is no exception. From the diplomatic post on New Mumbai to leading one of the newly-formed Raider special ops companies, Ryck continues his eventful career as a United Federation Marine.

Major (The United Federation Marine Corps Book 5), by Jonathan P. Brazee

About the Author I am a retired Marine colonel now living and working in Thailand. I was born in Oakland, CA, but have lived throughout the US and the world, and have traveled to over 100 countries. My undergraduate degree was earned at the U. S. Naval Academy (Class of 1979), and I have attended graduate school at U. S. International University and the University of California, San Diego, earning a masters and doctorate. I am a lifetime member of the Disabled American Veterans, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the US. Naval Academy Alumni Association, and the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America. I have rather eclectic tastes. I have won awards in photography, cooking, and several sports, earning national championships in rugby and equestrian events. I love reading, writing, exercise, cooking, travel, and photography. I published my first work back in 1978, a so-so short story titled "Secession." Since then, I have been published in newspapers, magazines, and in book format in fiction, political science, business, military, sports, race relations, and personal relations fields. I write because I love it. I only hope that others might read my work and get a bit of enjoyment or useful information out of my efforts. 4 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Another really great read! By Amazon Customer This really was another great read. I'm really looking forward to the next book in the series. C'mon Colonel! I'm a retired USN Master Chief, and I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys really good military sci fi, but read the whole series. It is honestly well worth it.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. I really like these books By M. Barland I really like these books. Brazee gives a pretty accurate depiction of military life that I enjoy greatly. The books aren't overly happy with everyone coming home like some trite child's book. This series is gritty, with the real loses of war reflected in the story telling. My only complaint is that the book would benefit from a thorough editing. There were a lot of spelling and grammatical mistakes. I chalk this up to the pace at which the books are written, which I commend. I'd rather have a well written book with some errors now than one in two years when I've forgotten all the back story and the characters.

2 of 3 people found the following review helpful. If There's a Fight, Major Lysander Will Be Involved! By Guardsix This is one of my favorite series. The action is always intense and pretty much continuous in some way or another. We’re back with now Major Ryk Lysander, United Federation Marine Corps. It appears he's calmed down considerably from his Captain days. He's nowhere near as arrogant now.His new assignment as an Embassy Attaché in the capital city of the Confederation, no less, is about as boring as it can get. Well, for him, nothing stays boring. He finds out that his notoriety as a two time Federation Nova winner marks him for extermination by the Confeds. One thing leads to another and he finds his career as a quasi-diplomat is over, quickly. Still, he does manage to assist the Confeds in capturing a critical spaceship taken by the SOG. That's an interesting story in itself. So his next assignment puts him at the United Federation Marine Corps HQ. This is the worst of all possible assignments for a Major. Here you are just one of many mid-career officers given boring go'fer work to see how much boredom you can swallow! You are a paper-pusher deluxe and it's very tough on action minded Marine officers. But, it's something you have to suck up and do the time.Ryk is doing his job and trying to cope. He's enjoying his family home time and getting to see his kids growing. Then one day, his friend from way back tells Ryk that he's taking command of a new Marine Ranger Battalion and needs a new Company Commander! Ryk has until morning to make his decision.Of course Ryk's going to go. Wouldn't be much of a story if he didn't. And now the action really gets started! The writing is great with lots of action. It's not real graphic, but can get realistic unless you live in a dream world and don't think the bad guys would ever use children as weapons! I'll leave it at that, so you can go read the book.Keep them coming and I'll keep reading.

By Andreas Petrossiants It came very quickly and in great condition. Did not realize it would be just a print out with three hole punch, but that is probably because I did not properly read the item description. In any case it turned out to be better because I can carry certain sections of the book with me on certain days without lugging around the whole book. Would definitely recommend.
