To many people the Vietnam War is either a distant memory best forgotten or something they’ve heard about in their American History class. But to me, and to many other people like me who lived through the experience, it is a part of us. The Vietnam War was one of the defining events for our generation. To most Americans the Vietnam War was limited to the conflict between North and South Vietnam. And, while most of the ground battles were, indeed, fought in South Vietnam, less heralded, but just as deadly battles, including the ones I was involved in, also took place in Cambodia, Laos and Thailand, countries that were friends of America. It was a war during which friends and enemies alike were bombed into oblivion and doused with toxic Agent Orange. It was a war for which the peoples of those countries are still paying the price more than forty years later. It was a war where America’s soldiers did their very best given restrictions imposed on them by their leaders in Washington. This is not about a book about my experiences during the Vietnam War. Rather, it is about the tragedy that was the Vietnam War. It is about the tragic and continuing consequences of the war on the civilian populations. It is about the physical and mental affects the war has had on us veterans. And it is about my continuing battle with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.

By Carolyn An excellent book that provides an interesting lesson on the history of this war and the ongoing mental anguish that veterans experience as they battle their way through each day of living life afterwards. The courage to write about what many cannot begin speak about saturates this man's story. I hope it helps others find their voice.

Navy Seal snipers are considered to be the most skilled among the SEALS. Becoming a Navy SEAL itself requires a great deal of training ranging from intense physical training to scuba diving, which many find highly demanding. Only a small percentage qualify and as for becoming a Navy seal sniper, the training requirements are even more, so you get only a rare few people completing the specialty training. Christopher Scott Kyle was one of them. Revered as one of the deadliest snipers in the military history of United States, Chris Kyle had served in the Iraq War with several commendations and awards for his meritorious service and heroism in combat. The numerous awards and honors he had received stand testament to his sniper and combat skills, and they have made him a legend. A Texan by birth, Kyle had served as Navy SEAL for a decade, during which time his unrivalled feat had brought him the title of the most successful Navy Seal sniper in the country’s military history. Although Kyle was discharged honorably from his position as Navy SEAL, he was not ready to bid farewell to his time in the Navy. However, since his family ties forbade him from spending more time in the job he loved most, he instead assuaged his fervor by being involved in family life, local activities and even ended up writing an autobiography- American Sniper. Published in January 2012, the book was a bestseller. In the wake of the success of his book, a movie was planned on the autobiography and later released in 2014. But Kyle did not live to watch the movie, as he was shot dead by eddie Rya Routh in Chalk Mountain, Texas. Although Kyle had left behind his autobiography and triumphs for us to cherish, there are things and events about him, which make him a phenomenon. This eBook is a tribute to Chris Kyle, the legendary American Sniper. It dwells on important events in his life right from his time in military to his civilian life and eventual death and trial. For those who knew Chris Kyle and the very few who haven’t had the opportunity to know about him, this eBook is sure to draw attention to the interesting and intriguing events in his life, as they unfold.

The Brick Mason's Sons, by Ben Spencer

Review "Spencer's prose is as firmly rooted in realism as it is fantastical, stringing together both the hard, cold facts and surreal symbolism in a way that is beautiful, elegant, and so very humanizing. When we read The Brick Mason's Sons, we're glimpsing our friends, our relatives, and ourselves, and we're seeing each one through each other's eyes." --Scott Waldyn, editor-in-chief of Literary Orphans  "The cocksure fathers and sons and brothers in Spencer's book play like Piedmont-bred descendants of Larry McMurtry's bull-headed boys in Horseman, Pass By. And where McMurtry's ornery Texans hide their tensions in bar fights and bull rides, Spencer's men bind their lives up in the baseballs and basketballs that so often stand in for southern pride. They're real men of quiet desperation, with private pathos literally written on their skin." --Stephen Brower, Easy Sound Recording Co.

About the Author Ben Spencer lives in Concord, North Carolina, with his wife and daughter. His work has appeared in Literary Orphans, and he has been nominated for the Pushcart Prize. He is the author of Temperance Unraveling. Please visit his website at benspencer.org for more information.

The Myth of Mars—Imagining the Course of Human Destiny is a collection of essays by the Rt. Rev. James D. Heiser. It is his third collection essays on the theological and philosophical implications of the exploration and colonization of Mars. Heiser is a founding member of the Mars Society, and currently serves on the Board of Directors and Steering Committee of that organization. “To speak of destiny is fraught with danger, for we want to impose our desires, and cause it destiny. … Mars—and space exploration in general—is not the true goal. Perhaps it is a place for us to learn—and we have already begun that process.” In The Myth of Mars—Imagining the Course of Human Destiny, Bishop James Heiser explores the role which myth plays in determining the way in which people envision the exploration and colonization of Mars in the course of human destiny. “Mars—in the sense which really matters the most in terms of myth—exists only in terms of a potentiality. The actions which human beings are presently taking toward Mars becoming a living world offer a mythical participation in one of several possible futures.”

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Loved it! By R. Melvin Mars is always discussed in a scientific way. There is plenty to be gained by such study, but if the human race still retains the soul of exploration our ancestors possessed, Mars may well represent far more to us--perhaps the first place men will seek to make a permanent habitation beyond the earth. As such, many questions about the culture we will create there must be asked and, more importantly, answered. James Heiser answers these questions.

Dante Gabriel Rossetti was an English poet, illustrator, painter and translator. He founded the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood in 1848 with William Holman Hunt and John Everett Millais, and was later to be the main inspiration for a second generation of artists and writers influenced by the movement, most notably William Morris and Edward Burne-Jones. His work also influenced the European Symbolists and was a major precursor of the Aesthetic movement. Rossetti's art was characterised by its sensuality and its medieval revivalism. Rossetti gave up oil painting after 1860 and thereafter worked mainly with water colors in small format, which sold well thanks to the sympathetic art critic John Ruskin, whom he had met in 1854. In 1860, he married his long-time model Elizabeth Eleanor Siddal. This feminine ideal of the Preraffaelites was Rossetti's muse and source of inspiration until her suicide in 1862.

Toth Jules Verne traveled around Europe -sometimes in his own boats, Saint Michel I, II, and III - visited countries where the French rarely went at that time. He put lots of local color in these novels. The human story is always important: today's reader will enjoy the historical setting and these local situations. "Un billet de lottery" is not a science fiction book, there is some adventure featured, and a predictable outcome. Not one of the major works of Jules Verne, but very readable; a good story for mainly younger readers.

Yonder up in the hills are men and women, white-haired, who love to tell of that time when the woods came to the door-step and God's cattle fed on the growing corn. Where, long ago, they sowed their youth and strength, they see their sons reaping, but now, bent with age, they have ceased to gather save in the far fields of memory. Every day they go down the long, well-trodden path and come back with hearts full. They are as children plucking the meadows of June. Sit with them awhile, and they will gather for you the unfading flowers of joy and love—good sir! the world is full of them. And should they mention Trove or a certain clock tinker that travelled from door to door in the olden time, send your horse to the stable and God-speed them!—it is a long tale, and you may listen far into the night. "See the big pines there in the dale yonder?" some one will ask. "Well, Theron Allen lived there, an' across the pond, that's where the moss trail came out and where you see the cow-path—that's near the track of the little red sleigh." Then—the tale and its odd procession coming out of the far past.

Holly Dorren can't breathe. Think. Feel. Her cousin is dead. Nothing will bring him back. And nothing will ever make her whole again. In the days following Larry's funeral, Holly begins to reflect on the childhood they shared. She looks for answers in both the past and the present, convinced that understanding his fascination with death might somehow allow her to cope with his absence. She doesn't want to disappear, but already she's fading away from the life she's led. Holly knew her cousin better than anyone, she was his best friend, and yet there is still a great deal she cannot accept in their relationship. In him. In herself. She doesn't know how to move on without him, but refusing to accept his death carries it's own devastating price.

I wanted more! The characters are heavy and broken and real and verona's brilliance in their creation makes it hard to believe this is her debut! I look forward to reading many more from this bright new literary star!

The characters are real an poignant. The psychological ramifications of suicide are neatly explored. Highly recommended for readers who like to read about and explore the human condition.

I had goosebumps reading parts of this story.Steady is the Fall is Hollys story and of how she deals with the death of her cousin Larry. She's finding it hard to deal with her loss but will her obsession with his death help her or not.If your looking for a well written story that will pull on your emotions then I highly recommend this little gem. Am looking forward to reading more from this author.

On July 16, 1846 some 543 latter-day saints volunteered to enlist to aid the U.S. campaign against Mexico. This group of saints was known as the Mormon Battalion, and earned a place in the history of the West. During its 2,000 mile march its men cleared a wagon road from Santa Fe to San Diego and helped secure California as United States territory. Members of the Battalion helped preserve a feeble peace in southern California before the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo ended hostilities. They established a wagon road between the Gila and the Rio Grande, which influenced the U.S. government to make the Gadsden Purchase. They opened wagon roads that linked California with Salt Lake City via Carson and Cajon passes. A former member of the Battalion was arguably given credit for the discovery of gold in California, while others eventually participated in the gold rush and helped stimulate economic development in the Great Basin. These former LDS soldiers ultimately received favorable recognition both from their military commanders and from other non-Mormons for their industriousness and loyalty. And through it all, never fought a battle.

The Mormon Battalion (Annotated - LDS), by B. H. Roberts

About the Author Brigham Henry Roberts was born in 1857 in Wolverhampton, England, of itinerant and soon separated parents. His convert mother immigrated to Zion when he was five years old, leaving him in the care of foster parents. When he was ten he too reached Utah, having walked nearly all the way across the plains. Once in Utah he moved from one mining camp to another, remaining illiterate until his mid-teens. His only formal schooling was one year at the University of Deseret, but added considerable self-education and became one of the most articulate and eloquent orators and writers in the Church’s history. Roberts edited and published the seven-volume 4,500 page “documentary” History of the Church also known as History of Joseph Smith. Later Roberts authored and published the 3,400-page six-volume history of the first century of the Church, known as A Comprehensive History of the Church. In addition he authored the three-volume New Witnesses for God, which he regarded as “the fullest treatise on the Book of Mormon yet published.” This, he said in retrospect, was his “finest work.” He authored, in addition, more than fifty tracts, articles, and pamphlets revolving around the Book of Mormon, its origins, its content, its meaning, its purposes, and its power as a sacred document. Robert’s multi-volume work made B. H. Roberts the foremost Latter-day Saint historian of the first century of the Church’s existence. Roberts became a member of the First Quorum of the Seventy in 1888 at the age of 31. He was elected to the United States House of Representatives in 1898 but was not allowed to take his seat because of the controversy over his involvement in polygamy. Beyond the age of 60 he was a chaplain in America and France for Utah Soldiers serving in World War I during 1917-1918. Known callings 1888 First Quorum of the Seventy, age 31

When Brannon Jackson enters a reputable art college, his dreams of becoming an artist quickly crumble. His dorm room is a dump. His roommate is a horny hipster. And one of his first professors is a tyrant packaged in pixie form. Things get worse when he inherits secondhand stink on the college bus, stumbles into a series of sexual situations, and nearly gets kicked out of his assigned housing. Brannon’s priorities go from purchasing paints to preventing panic attacks as he attempts to navigate the complex and frightening word of human relations. Stunted by several social pitfalls, including public speaking, dating strangers, and escalating tension with his roommate, he soon discovers his college course load is the easy part. It’s the people placed in his path who aren’t providing passing marks. Combining heartbreak and hilarity, this coming-of-age confessional composites a portrait of a young man’s attempt to become an artist and adult in an environment of hot weather, cold hearts, and an abundance of art school nudity.

By Peyton I've read and re-read this book several times - each reading renders more insight, and more enjoyment. Jackson's style is crisp and clear. He has an uncanny talent for meshing pathos with humor in a way that is both deeply moving as well as just plain fun.As an editor, I read a great many books. Scab is, hands down, one of the top three books I read this past year. I am anxiously awaiting Jackson's next book. This young writer is going places!

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Geat book!!! By Debi Stuckey I LOVED this book. Simple as that. As a mother of college kids, I probably saw each page in a different perspective than most (younger) readers. My motherly instincts kicked in on the first page and by the end of the first semester, I had a hit list. Brannon's witty description of each character gives one the feeling of knowing that particular character personally.I felt every emotion from page to page, rode the roller coaster of feelings to the highest high and the lowest low with Brannon. I shared his triumphs and his defeats.Having children that have suffered similar experiences in college and faced the trials and tribulations of growing into adulthood, I could relate to Brannon's story. Not only did it open my soul to feel the raw, maternal feelings of "protection" and "revenge" from my maternal side, but it hit home with explicit descriptions of experiences similar to ones I have faced in my own life away from the college scene. If you have a child that has left home for college or have one that will someday, you must read this book. I thought I understood everything after experiencing it with my child. Not so. Powerful insight from the daily journals of the one that lived the life will tell so much one can not imagine having not been there in the flesh.I love Brannon's attitude about it all. As difficult as it was at times, his sense of humor, humility and outlook on life are uplifting. Read this book and discover for yourself why it is important that "one not change to become part of the problem, but remain who you are and hope for others to change to be a part of the solution."

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. This is real life By Herman Scab is a story about the adjustments of moving from home life to "the real world." Brannon bares his soul in the pages of this memoir, telling of the transitions that a socially awkward person goes through in trying to cope with different kinds of people. Even amidst the confines of a college campus, a person will find many different archetypes, some of whom baffle the foundation one thought he had lain before. There are many instances in this book to which I could relate. In my senior year of earning a Bachelor degree, I still face crippling insecurities about my talent and abilities. Having been through the mill of various roommates throughout the years, I can attest to the awkwardness the situations can cause.By the end of this book, you will see the resilience of the human soul and psyche. No matter what depression may visit, a person springs back into life, even if unwilling at points, and goes on about his business. Brannon has done a tremendous job of conveying this concept, all with a candid, darkly humorous recollection.

Besides the story itself was charming in a tragic sense. The story of two rough and tumble boys, constantly in trouble and not thought well by their peers who in the end are the heroes of a tragic battle.

Excerpt from Texas and the Mexican War: A Chronicle of the Winning of the SouthwestThat American diplomat known to his contemporaries as the "eel-like Monroe" gave Manifest Destiny a deep offense which popular memory has let slip. He bartered away, as his enemies said, our claim to the country between the Sabine and the Rio Grande. However shadowy that claim was, there were patriotic Americans in the year 1819 who wanted the country. The shadowiness of the claim was not worth mentioning, they thought. Napoleon sold us something in the Southwest and surely we, with Manifest Destiny on our side, were the best judges of what old Louisiana included.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Morris History written in early 20th Century but very good on events and chronology. Much about the politics of the acceptance of Texas into the Union and the part played by Great Briton was new to me and most interesting. Good background on the times and attitudes leading up to the war. Could use more stories about Texan participation in the war itself (e.g. Rip Ford, etc.)

It was free, so im not disappointed about no pictures but was hoping they would have been copied as well as the text. Sadly, it seems a lot of the public domain old books for free have the text copied but not the pictures...so you're left with orphaned captions. What I read of the text was interesting, descriptive, and engaging, but not enough to, eg, reproduce a costume from.

Neuroscientist Alice Kurz and her team have developed a technology that could lead to immortality. For Alice, it’s a chance to develop a cure for Alzheimer’s, the disease that destroyed her grandmother. Test subject Eliot Stearns knows nothing about this. He believes he’s part of a five-day isolation study, locked in the lab, his only contact with the rest of the world through videoconference with the research team. Eliot and Alice grow close through deep conversations exploring the world’s oldest stories, the nature of consciousness, and what it truly means to be human. But everything changes when Eliot discovers that the study is not what it seems to be, and five days of isolation could last the rest of his life.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Very thought provoking and a great journey. By Amazon Customer Couldn't put this book down! Very thought provoking and a great journey.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Very thought-provoking By Allie L. I was immediately hooked when I started reading this book. This story is unlike any other story I've ever read. It truly challenges you to think outside of your comfort zone, and consider ideas you may have never thought about before. But at the same time, it makes you really care about the characters and what they are going through. It even made me cry at a couple points. It is, however, a very intellectual story, and there was some dialogue that was a little over my head, so it can be a little difficult to read in that regard. But someone who is used to very deep philosophical discussions and ideas would really enjoy this book. The only issue I found with it is that the ending did feel a little bit rushed. Overall, though, I am very glad I read this book, and I think the story will really stay with me. It's something that I find myself still thinking about long after I've put the book down.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. The Wife's Two Cents By JudyJudy This story is set in a realistic, near-future world, but offers a unique vantage. I see Eliot as an unknowing champion of Alice and her work, and I was moved to tears by some of the hard choices they made along their journey. Only those willing to brave that frontier will pioneer their dreams. And real dreams too. But who profits? Man or society? A thought-provoking novel on many levels. It will have you questioning some basic concepts of society, if you don't watch out.

MY DEAR LITTLE FRIENDS:--You can never guess how much I have enjoyed writing these stories of the night-time, and I must tell you how I first came to think of doing so. I once knew a girl--and she was not a very little girl, either, who was afraid of the dark. And I have known three boys who were as brave as could be by daylight, but who would not run on an errand alone after the lamps were lighted.
