In this delightful and profusely illustrated book, the author recounts in colorful detail his early childhood in northern Louisiana, his enlistment in the Claiborne Rangers in July of 1861, which became Company L of the 12th Louisiana Infantry Regiment, his experiences during the four years of the War Between the States, and his long trek home from North Carolina after the surrender of the Army of the Tennessee on April 26, 1865. Valuable insights can be found here into the sufferings endured by the common soldier in the Confederate army, as well as their courage and commitment to their country and to one another.

Stories of Dixie By lowell kepp I was loaned this book by a friend who is a direct descendent of the author. The book is full of details about life in the ante bellum South; the family is not a wealthy but they are survivors in a very rural area. The author tells of his early life, as he becomes an adolescent, the War between the States begins. He enlisted in the Cofederate Army and was in active duty until the end. A fantastic story developes after Gen. Robert E. Lee surrenders, and the author and his fellow soldiers from La. make their way back home from N.C.With minimal formal education he becomes an advanced mathematician winning many awards and involved in the formation of L.S.U. The book is easy to read and contains many historical aspects that are not readliy avaible. It would make a great movie. I highly recommend the story. Lowell Kepp

I bought the book because I found out the man that wrote it was in the Louisiana 12th Infantry. I knew one of my GG Grandfathers was in the same unit so I thought it would be awesome to read. I was very surprised when I found Mr. Nicholson mention my GG Grandfather by name in one of the chapters. This of course made the book very special to me but I will say I would still say it's a great book even if it had nothing to do with my family. It is refreshing to read about the history of the south and the Civil War from a person that was there and not from some modern day hating liberal that has never even been to the south
