It is 35 pages, not 44 pages as advertised.Be aware - it does not contain even one photograph, chart or diagram, only text. Most topics are covered in two or three paragraphs. You get advice like, "Before taking a photo, even with just two to four people, make sure everyone is ready."Chapter 2 is entitled "Establishing a Repertoire with Your Subject." Presumably, the author meant "rapport," not repertoire. There is absolutely nothing here, except for the rankest of beginners. I sent mine back.

Very informative By Amy While I don't own an exceptional camera or take portraits, it is always something I've bee very interested in doing but unfortunately haven't found the time. With this book, anyone can take great portraits. This book has such great information on using your camera to the best of its ability, poses - or not, and how to edit your photos like a professional. I highly recommend this book to anyone just getting started.

It seems so important as you do what you do, But in times to come no one remembers you. Your actions are forgotten and your feelings destroyed. You've become one with the nihilist void. Inspired by real-life events, as well as by classic philosophical novels such as Jean-Paul Sartre's Nausea, Albert Camus' The Stranger, Yukio Mishima’s Confessions of a Mask, and Chuck Palahniuk's Fight Club, The Nihilist tells the story of a philosophy professor caught in the grips of nihilistic despair. Following the death of his mother and the increasingly bizarre deaths of his closest friends, the nameless main character is afflicted with a mysterious malady that forces him to confront the absurdity of his own meaningless existence. Brain parasites, scatological dreams, punk rock, and spontaneous human combustion appear alongside the ideas of Heraclitus, Socrates, Diogenes, Schopenhauer, Nietzsche and Heidegger. The result is a wryly humorous philosophical allegory of hopelessness and resignation in the face of the void.

The Nihilist, by John Marmysz

Review "Marmysz has crafted a 21st Century philosophical novel, complete with narrative hints from Dostoevsky and Kafka, Sartre and Camus. His simple, straightforward style is clear and accessible with just enough punk rock, rebellion and violence mixed in to keep the interest of today's reader." - Jason McQuinn, founder and editor of Alternative Press Review, Anarchy: A Journal of Desire Armed, and Modern Slavery.  "Kafkaesque! Delves intosubjects nobody usually wants to go into: death, vomiting, rectal exams, disease, meaninglessness. Scary, sad and true. It's a work of art." - Christopher Anderson, writer and director, Rocket Baby Dolls and An Act of Sabotage. "The Nihilist  is an engaging and entertaining episodic novel that bravely excavates intimate topics to develop a philosophical perspective." - Benjamin Franks, University of Glasgow. Author of Rebel Alliances: The Means and Ends of Contemporary British Anarchisms.

About the Author John Marmysz received his Ph.D. in philosophy from the State University of New York at Buffalo. In addition to The Path of Philosophy: Truth, Wonder and Distress, he is the author of The Nihilist's Notebook (Moralinefree Publishing, 1996), Laughing at Nothing: Humor as a Response to Nihilism (SUNY Press, 2003) and he is coeditor (with Scott Lukas) of Fear, Cultural Anxiety and Transformation: Horror, Science Fiction and Fantasy Films Remade (Lexington Books, 2009). Marmysz has written articles and reviews for various journals including Film and Philosophy, Consciousness, Literature and the Arts, Film-Philosophy, The Journal of Popular Culture and The Journal of Aesthetics and Art Criticism. He is the recipient of a SUNY Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Scholarship and Creativity and has served as an NEH fellow. The back of this book rightly compares it to some of the best previous philosophical literature, particularly of the Existentialist kind. It is also correct in mentioning the sheer range of philosophical influences found within, from Heraclitus to Heidegger and beyond. But what stands out most in this awesome novel is how completely accessible and unpretentious it is. Marmysz is at turns a great storyteller, laugh out loud funny, and even a little touching. The pent-up feelings and inner trials of a philosopher professor are here studded with some pretty keen observations on life, death, love, the impact of the body on ideas, the nature of friendship--and all set to a background of the punk rock scene in the Bay Area. I'm still trying to figure out which part I like better: the author's dead-on descriptions of the types of students in any given philosophy course, or the turn to a certain surrealism toward the end of the novel. More books like this need to be written.

Starts off with the death of his mom, and then goes through his life and how he is questioning things and bucking authority and living a Nihilist belief system. I learned a lot and I related to his experiences, you will too - and maybe like me, you'll start to question some of your own belief systems, and wonder why you've been living the way you've been living for so long. Funny, scary, punk rock, friends, drugs, sex...this novel has it all. Good read! Eye opening too.

The first part is written well, and somewhat interesting. I don't know what page I started to skip ahead, but I started to skip ahead. That's why, if you're a Punk Rocker, even at heart-- tear the book in two.Why didn't I like the second half? It seemed rushed? It seemed like someone told the author, "Finish this book!". Maybe his id? The first part was wonderful. It's almost like the author ran out of the good stuff, and just put a bunch of words/illnesses/symbolism together. To be honest to the author, I skimmed the second half of the book--and couldn't wait for it to end. It's kinda tragic because I think he can write. He can write better than most Ph.D's. Oh yea, enough with the Ph.D worship? I know too many PhD's who should have left at the Master's level. It makes sence financially, and let's be real, a PhD is a thesis, a lot of b.s.. Personally I would like to get rid of the PhD. And Yes--the fact that you have a PhD is very relevant. I wish PhD thesis's were original.I took Philosophy at COM. He was a good teacher. I think his name was Palmer? He too thought he was brilliant. He thought he could write too. Well he put out a book, and it was all his material from class. It too was terrible. I was a young buck in his class, and thought he was Hilarious. Well, I got older, and he wasen't that funny, or inciteful. To all Philosophy majors. The degree doesn't matter, unless you want tenure at a community college. What matters is really nothing. Strike that last sentance. I think I've met too many Philosophy majors who think the degree makes them intelligent, inciteful, or even good writers? It doesn't. It might impress impressionable kids in college, but not adults.I find it ironic that a former Punk Rocker/Nilhilist is so caught up in societal labels, and the system? Try to hide it? Your writing has a Regan era feel to it. Yea, we are roughly the same age. I saw through the light, but it took a nervous breakdown. I never label anyone--anymore. I don't ask "what do you do?". I have a feeling your analysis of your friends is completely your 80's conformity defining people? Why do I feel like you are not qualified to describe your friendships, or even the people around you? If you put out another book--actually just don't. There's so many talented writers out there who don't have the right connections. Give that talented student in you class the money, and have your wife slap you on the back. This is why you got the Phd right? Teach those kids. Leave the writing to the natural writers. The book has has an interesting title.(If reviewers think I was overly harsh in my critism; he used illness/disease as a writing tool. It was blatently obvious what he was tring to accomplish. I wasen't effective. it wasent clever. The author should have known better. Sure--the kids in class probally thought it was a brilliant writing ploy, but not me--it was just bad taste. It's like making fun of the fact someone's homeless, just to tell a joke. This dude is from my generation; we dont do that! We weren't brought up to use tools/tricks to get our points across, or to make a buck. )and you have my review.

The main characters are nice, well conceived and full of positive energy and moral values. Yet, it is a novel from the 19th century, so don't be schocked by its racist tone. The book describes a journey through a still, (in that time) much unknown African continent. Here you'll find adventure, suspense, discoveries and this naif but enthusiastic belief in the idea of progress through scientific development. I really enjoy it. Too bad that the book is so full of the racist prejudices of its time. otherwise I would recommand it to any young teenager who wants to learn how to like reading books instead of playing videogames.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. 19th century fun By Thomas J. E. Schwarz A nice Jules Verne. You enjoy this book if you can put yourself into the world of the 19th century, accepting its racism, its colonialism, its belief in progress, and its joy in starting to control its environment. If you cannot make this transition, you'll have to hate it, starting with its view of a savage Afrika that needs to be redeemed by European civilisation and ending by its lack of knowledge of metereology. (For this reason I would not give it to my kids).

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Wilmington: Feels Like Home By Foster Corbin Perhaps it had something to do with fact that I had been listening to Judy Collins’ new CD of duets with male singers—particularly her singing with Jackson Browne the beautiful “Feels Like Home” that made me so receptive to Eno’s latest 27 VIEW OF WILMINGTON since the first section of essays is labeled “A Place Called Home.” It seems that practically every writer included is much taken with Wilmington. Even though Dana Sachs (“On Second Thought) threw up when she and her husband arrived at their rental house, having driven across the country from San Francisco to Wilmington, now twenty-three years, two sons and a house or two later, she has “allowed the city” to grow up around her. Melodie Homer (“Where You Find It”) has found a home in Wilmington for her and her two children after she lost her husband, a co-pilot on that ill-fated United Airlines plane that was hijacked and went down in a field in Pennsylvania on 9/11. The physical beauty of the city and the kindness of the people are what she says make Wilmington “feel like home.” (Maybe Judy Collins is on to something.) And I certainly envy Emily Louise Smith (“Winter Beach Run”) her proximity to the ocean. All is not completely perfect, however, in this paradise, as Robert Anthony Siegel, a recently transplanted New Yorker (“Ode to My Back Yard”) finds out. In addition to his daughter finding a snake in the yard, although he is delighted with having a big back yard, his next-door neighbor, “a kindly old gentleman” reminds him that if Mr. Siegel’s tree falls on the neighbor’s property, that he will have to sue him. (Perhaps Robert Frost was right about good fences making good neighbors.)Emily Colin’s “The Future Behind Me” from a work in progress and whose narrator is a former army chaplain in Iraq and now an ex-priest is so intriguing that I want to read the novel when she finishes it. In Nan Graham’s “Esther, Andy & Me (The Whole Bloomin’ Weekend) Azalea Festival 1958” we find out that Esther Williams may have swum like a mermaid but could curse like a sailor. (I guess some of us are telling our ages if we even remember the lady.) And Susan Taylor Block’s “Color Meets Light” is a beautiful tribute to the rector of the historic St. James Episcopal Church, Dr. Adam Empie, who spoke out against racism as early as 1811. My favorite essay in the entire collection, however, has to be Wendy Brenner’s “Love & Death in the Cape Fear Serpentarium.” It takes one heck of a writer to make someone who collects live snakes interesting in the person of one Dean Ripa; but she does and Mr. Ripa turns out to be one fascinating man. From being good friends with the writer William Burroughs (he was with Burroughs when he died) to saying that if he had a religion, it would be the snake-handling kind, Mr. Ripa is something else. (As an aside, I remember what one of my favorite writers Lee Smith, who is included in 27 VIEW OF HILLSBOROUGH, when asked by someone from some other part of the U. S. if she saw lots of snakes in the South, responded without missing a beat, only in church.Five of the authors write about the bloody infamous events of 1898 that left many black citizens dead in the section entitled “Views From 1898 and Beyond.” While what each writer says is good, a paragraph by Bertha Boykin Todd expressing the 1898 Foundation’s philosophy says it all:“No one living in Wilmington today was a participant in the events of 1898. Consequently, none among us bears any personal responsibility for what happened. But all among us—no matter our race or history, whether we have arrived here only recently or come from families that have called Wilmington home for generations—are responsible for 1998. On each of us falls the personal responsibility to make our community one where economic justice and racial harmony flourish.Surely this is a challenge we are willing to accept.”Elizabeth Woodman of Eno Publishers enclosed a note with the book she sent to me saying that 27 VIEWS OF WILMINGTON is the last in the 27 series that Eno has published in the past few years. It is indeed encouraging to see publishers who are interested in placing quality over quantity and in featuring serious writers in beautifully designed books that continue to win awards. When I finished this little review, I found myself a little sad for what will not come again.

By using local authors to write short stories or poems about their hometown it ends up giving outsiders a view into the soul of the place.

Robinson Crusoe's money; or, the remarkable financial fortunes and misfortunes of a remote island community, by David A. Wells

About the Author Called the "Father of the American Cartoon," Thomas Nast (1840-1902) was an influential caricaturist and political cartoonist. Remembered for his Civil War illustrations in Harper's Weekly, Nast's political cartoons were also instrumental in the downfall of Boss Tweed and the election of President Ulysses S. Grant. He solidified America's picture of Santa Claus by portraying him as a round, twinkly, elfin figure, which he based on descriptions in Washington Irving's writings and Clement Moore's poem "The Night Before Christmas." Nast also popularized the donkey as a symbol representing the Democratic Party and the elephant as a Republican Party symbol.

Special Commissioner of Revenue. Not sure why he picked the title, as the book by Defoe was published in 1719, a century and a half earlier. The book addresses an island with people, and how they would evolve a system of barter, moving to money using gold, and then paper, Later financial instruments would be introduced to facilitate trade. He addresses the evolution of the system including people moving from producing goods, to just using the financial system to trade, and make a living by swapping financial instruments, but not producing any hard goods or other thing of value. He addresses how the system gets corrupted, and how wars destroy goods and thus the value of the product of a country.Recommend this book for anyone who wants to understand how money evolves and can be corrupted. Still relevant after all the years.

Beauty and the beasts: Walton Ford’s sinister wildlife scenes   At first glance, Walton Ford’s large-scale, highly-detailed watercolors of animals recall the prints of 19th century illustrators John James Audubon and Edward Lear. A closer look reveals a complex and disturbingly anthropomorphic universe, full of symbols, sly jokes, and allusions to the ‘operatic’ nature of traditional natural history. In this stunning but sinister visual universe, beasts and birds are not mere aesthetic objects but rather dynamic actors in allegorical struggles: a wild turkey crushes a small parrot in its claw; a troupe of monkeys wreak havoc on a formal dinner table; an American buffalo is surrounded by bloodied white wolves. In dazzling watercolor, the images come to impress as much for their impeccable naturalism as they do for their complex narratives. This updated edition of Pancha Tantra features the artist’s most recent works and contextualizes his collection of bestial tableaux with an in-depth exploration of his oeuvre, a complete biography, and excerpts from his textual inspirations: Vietnamese folktales and the letters of Benjamin Franklin, the Autobiography of Benvenuto Cellini, and Audubon’s Ornithological Biography.   Text in English, French, and German

Would be helpful if they didn't focus so much on TAB in the DVD. I just feel like it's better to read written notation. With TAB, you just don't get that understanding of Key and harmony... just my opinion. Good song selection and solid educational book. I recommend it overall. Just make sure you're taking time to learn the musical notation if you want to be worth a damn in the Bluegrass jam circle!

The Civil War was a tragic conflict that destroyed many lives, but for those trying to save lives the tragedy was often compounded. Military doctors labored through the smoke of battle where impossible conditions and fear of infection often forced them to resort to amputation, and most operations were performed without painkillers. Thomas Fanning Wood recorded his wartime experiences as a Confederate Army surgeon, and his recollections of those events allow us to hear a distinct voice of the Civil War. As a young soldier recovering from fever at a Richmond hospital, Wood developed an interest in medicine that was encouraged by a doctor who steered him toward medical training. After only eight months of study he was made an assistant surgeon in the Third North Carolina Regiment. His narrativeudrawn from his memoirs, letters from the front, and articles written for his hometown newspaperupresents a poignant and sometimes horrifying picture of what the Civil War physician had to face both under battlefield conditions and in urban hospitals. Wood himself spent much of his time at the front, and his vivid narrative describes both a doctorAEs daily activities and the campaigns he witnessed. He was present at many of the warAEs major engagements: he was near Stonewall Jackson when the general fell at Chancellorsville, manned a field dressing station at the foot of CulpAEs Hill at Gettysburg, and was one of the few survivors of the Union attack on the ""mule shoe"" at Spotsylvania when his entire division was wiped out. WoodAEs account also lends new insight into Jubal EarlyAEs 1864 campaigns in the Shenandoah Valley and against Washington. With its observations of medical care and training not found in standard histories of the waruincluding a description of the examination required to become an assistant surgeonu Doctor to the Front offers a unique human perspective on the Civil War. With their additional descriptions of key figures and events, WoodAEs recollections combine historical significance and human interest to show us another side of that terrible conflict.

Thomas Wood wrote his "recollections" nearly twenty-one years after the war ended. Wood wrote of his adventures in the third North Carolina Regiment. He saw Chancellorsville,Gettysburg, and many others. He gives interesting biographic sketches on different members of the regiment. Wood's letters home are included in the book to make it very interesting. The medical situation was very inadequate. There was very little knowledge of sanitary laws. Wood did not truly have any medical degree, nor was he recommended by a medical school,he began to practice medicine after developing an interest in it after recovering in an army hospital.I enjoyed this book because Wood writes well. His detail of the battles are interesting.Though it may interest the historian,I think that a book like this should be enjoyed by anyone who loves a good book. One other book on medical history is Kate: the Journal of a Confederate Nurse by Kate Cumming.

Wartime experiences as a Confederate Army surgeon By Midwest Book Review Doctor To The Front: The Recollections Of Confederate Surgeon Thomas Fanning Wood 1861-1865 is the latest addition to the University of Tennessee Press Voices of the Civil War Series and an outstanding contribution to Civil War studies. Military doctors labored through the smoke of battle where impossible conditions and fear of infection compelled them to resort to amputation -- an operation most often performed without painkillers. Thomas Wood's account of his wartime experiences as a Confederate Army surgeon and his recollections of those events provide the reader with a vividly narrated "window in time" to those harrowing days. Very highly recommended for personal, professional, and academic Civil War reading lists and reference collections, Doctor To The Front combines historically significant information with human interest accounts to reveal still another horrific facet of the civil war.

Nelson If you are interested in war strategies for the Civil War, this book is well-written and interesting. However, I marked it down because I was expecting to read about medical practices for the period and very little medical information is given.

Major Victoria Haley is dying. Poisoned and sidelined from the Cygnaran battles against their myriad enemies, she is bereft of the magic that defines her and gives her hope. Haley must face the very real possibility that her only means of survival might be the advanced technology of the cult devoted to the goddess Cyriss—particularly their use of clockwork bodies to house the minds of once-living worshippers. But Cygnar and the Convergence of Cyriss are enemies; approaching them could mean death—or worse. Haley must decide: is the cost worth the risk?

That said, it wasn't quite up to the standards of the experts like Larry Correia and Dan Wells and Howard Tayler whose writings I have loved in this universe before. Victoria seemed more shallow than I prefer, although I realize that we only had seventy pages or so to get to know her, and the conflict didn't seem as desperate as some of the other stories I've read, although all the pieces were there (just not sewn together quite right for my personal taste). Four stars. Good, but not exemplary. I will say that the ending was marvelous. General Nemo is a wonderful character that really tugged at my emotions in one of the final scenes.

They have brief identification below.Baby Hippo, Ostrich Chicks,Baby Giraffe, Elephant, Kangaroo-- a Joey , A camel calf, a crocodile hatching etcThe is a whale , a dolphin and another fishThere are several birdsI didn't count them but there are 30-40 photos at a guessSome are of domestic Animals, more are of wild animals,Overall the photos are well above average.--they are very crisp with a rich depth of colourNo obvious standout photo that may be hard to find-- I suppose each of us has our own list of photos of animals we are keen to find excellent examples of.Worth thinking aboutThat said, for me value for money.( I am still to find an ideal book of animal babies-- many have helpful photos but to me none really stand out as epwell above the others -- my comment relate to Po books on kindle. I live in New Zealand and sending paperbacks or hardcovers becomes very expensive. I have a small paperback and hardback reference set , but I it is available on Kindle I get it-- and I save on postage.

He Knew a Firefly, by Smita Bhattacharya

About the Author A self-confessed nerd, feminist and lover of all things quirky, Smita is an award winning short story writer based out of Mumbai. Potent coffee and a good book makes her day. Planning for that one big, decadent trip to a new country, makes her year. She considers herself the sum total of all the places she has been to, like a Lego puzzle being set up, one journey at a time. Smita cares deeply for women's issues and her writing usually reflects strong, central female characters. She's also a fan of a genre she calls racy emotional thrillers, and her books display that predilection. She has a novel and a novella out in the reading world, with plenty more floating in the dark recesses where they came from. Smita has a degree in engineering and Masters in Business Administration and currently works as a consultant.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Unique. Novel. Jarring. Endearing. By arcarc_reviews I loved this book and I love the author’s style of writing. Throughout the book I was really flowing with the characters and felt like I was lost in them, living vicariously. Exactly the experience I look for in a book.I typically read and review science fiction so for those who follow my reviews I have to point out right away that this book is more along the lines of literature than science fiction. For those who exclusively read plot-driven narrative science fiction, this book is a world away and very different. The plot revolves around a girl who sees people’s futures in her dreams. This is a very common and well-traveled device of many a science fiction novel, however it reads like none I have come across. Unique. Novel. Jarring. Endearing. The main character has the ability to see people’s futures, but unlike most science fiction out there, this is not what the book is about so much as the characters and their very human, fragile, broken and mistake-filled lives. The characters ride a roller coaster of ups and downs, joys and sorrows, and Akshara, our dreamer, sees some of it ahead of time and tries to do what she can to avoid things or change them. Many times the events happen anyway and she feels her gift is nothing but a curse. Other times things happen she didn’t foresee and she hates herself for not dreaming. The other characters have fully developed stories and lives that intersect with Akshara’s tangentially and their choices affect her life and her dreams as much as her actions affect theirs. Powerful stuff.I won’t give away much more, but only to say this was a mesmerizing, enchanting journey of a book I highly recommend to those who like literature with a science fiction twist.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Exquisitely written, comforting yet bone-chilling By Alabama Teacher I'm a long-time fan of novels that are set in other cultures, so I was thrilled to be offered this title to review. In a similar vein as The Kite Runner and The Rose Hotel, this book instantly has the power to put you in the setting and the culture without having to provide endless backstory in order to hold your hand through it. For example, the author did a masterful job interjecting "foreign" words and phrases in her dialogue, but did not need to translate those terms for the reader; the tone of the conversation told us all we needed to know in order to understand. While the plot itself is intriguing, what struck me was the universal application of it. This book didn't have to take place throughout India or Paris, it could have just as easily spoken to a vast audience of readers no matter where and when it was set. The fact that the author brings her readers to these locales is simply another layer of enjoyment to the reading process. But the most important part of this novel is the absolutely exquisite writing. It is equal parts joy and heartbreak, and at time it is even bone-chilling, but all throughout the book the writing wraps you in such a familiar sense of understanding. The most horrific details are written with such finesse that you are in the scene but still somehow safely encased in the author's words. As someone who reads and reviews as many books as I do, it's easy to think you know how it will end, but that's also not the case.Fans of stories that take them outside their own world views and outside their ability to suspend belief will treasure this one.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Moving, intriguing and magical By Karan Garg The novel follows Akshara who has the magical ability to glimpse into the future of people she knows. Sounds fun, right? Not so when it’s not good news. And not when you don’t know fully how it will turn out. She does try hard ─ to love, to help people, to make them lead better lives despite knowing what it would bring her. And it’s quite a journey, across countries, across people, across years. Quite a journey this. All the characters seemed alive to me, as if I was living their lives. And when it finally ended, it was sadly satisfying, the best kind to be. Highly recommended.
