Review A 1950s story about a time that continues to haunt African Americans in the South. It is a compelling story of hate, love and victory.  The author tells this must-read story from different points of view, engaging the reader into history and the secret lives of the people of Taylor's Crossing.--Ruth P. Watson, author, Blackberry Days of Summer and An Elderberry FallJanie Dempsey Watts is a fine storyteller, weaving her tale of love and loss with scenes from a landscape she knows well. Return to Taylor's Crossing is a bold and brave story, whose characters you will love.--Cassie Dandridge Selleck, author, The Pecan ManIn Return to Taylor's Crossing, Watts explores the Civil Rights era through the experiences of Abednego Harris, a young African-American who came of age in North Georgia during that turbulent time. It is a story of sadness, and revenge, and hatred, and ignorance. It is a story of growth, and change, and hope, and renewal. It is a story of forgiveness. And it is a story we must never forget.--Raymond L. Atkins, Sweetwater Blues

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Memorable, Charming Characters By mm Janie Dempsey Watts’ second novel, Return to Taylor’s Crossing, traces the story of Lola James who grows up in the South during great racial strife. Lola first works as a domestic housekeeper and nanny,in Georgia. She falls in love with a farm worker, Abednego Harris. Their plan to marry is disrupted by cruelties inflicted on both by Klansmen from their own community. When Abednego disappears, Lola, heart-broken and pregnant, travels to Florida where her world gradually unfolds. Peace is short-lived, though. After tragedy strikes, Lola returns to her hometown, Taylor’s Crossing, Georgia, to help her ailing mother and to a future she never expected.Anyone who enjoys a good love story or Southern fiction will love this book. I have read the book twice and will read it again and again. Marsha Mathews

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Entertaining and historically correct By Lisa Jones The characters of Return to Taylor's Crossing come alive for the reader in this historically correct and entertaining novel. The first two lines of each chapter always had me hooked. It sheds light on the fact that terrible hate crimes cause a ripple effect throughout the future generations of the victims and the perpetrators. Return to Taylor's Crossing is an interesting read which will hopefully encourage its readers to regard each life as sacred.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Still an Issue By Ray Zimmerman I have never given much thought to the question of redemption in literature, but I once heard the author of this book, in a radio interview, state that it ends with a sort of redemption. I believe she is right. The story is set in North Georgia in 1959, on the cusp of the Civil Rights Movement. It brings to mind ugly truths which are uncomfortable to remember. Our society wants to remember the Reverend, Doctor Martin Luther King, Jr. and dissident bus rider Rosa Parks, but forget three young girls killed in a church bombing in Birmingham. We cannot forget, because the attitudes which created these events persist into the present day.The story of Lola and Abednego is compelling because it addresses a struggle which is not yet finished. The violent events of one night changed their young lives forever. These lives continued and in the end found grace. It is a great read.
