In the two decades since astronomers first discovered the existence of a planet outside of our solar system, "exoplanetology" has become the hottest specialty in astrophysics. Scientists young and old, inspired by the thought of finding either another habitable world or the Holy Grail of space exploration, life itself, flocked to be part of this burgeoning field. With so much brainpower on hand, it's no wonder that investigative techniques advanced more quickly than anyone would have thought. To date, more than 1,000 exoplanets have been found, and in this eBook, Exoplanets: Worlds Without End, we delve into this quest that sometimes sounds more like science fiction than science. Section 1, "Exo-Search," sets the stage and outlines how astronomers are looking for new worlds: the various techniques, how they've improved to date and plans for upcoming missions. Sections 2 through 5 analyze the discoveries, often both controversial and strange. Section 3 focuses on the race to find other Earth-like planets. With excitement at an all-time high, author Ron Cowen cautions against publishing too quickly out of optimism. In "Noisy Stars May Create Phantom Planets," Cowen describes how stellar activity can mimic the signs of tiny exoplanets. Section 4 takes on the real oddballs. They may be remnants of gas giants whose atmospheres were stripped away, as in the piece "The Bones of Giants," or have alien chemistries. Some trace their course around white dwarfs, the results of a second generation of planets forming around old stars. Section 5 asks if there's life out there. In "Anybody Home?" John Matson describes the search for the chemical signatures that scientists think are telltale signs that we're not the only living things in this part of the universe. So far, we're still alone out here, but in a field where the discoveries are coming thick and fast, it's exciting to think that it could all change tomorrow.

Turner The main point I got from this short book is that our Solar System is not a typical one or an average one. Most planetary systems appear to have very large gas giants like Juniper close to their stars, orbiting in short periods. Of course these are the most easily spotted through a variety of methods spelled out in the book. Rarely if at all can we see these planets directly. So, although most stars likely have planets and moons around those planets they don't have the pattern of small planets near the sun and larger gaseous planets further from it. And besides this generalization, the main point is that each star system is different. We already knew that many stars are double or triple revolving around each other but now we know that each system is individual in its character. To find an Planet with near the size of Earth orbiting a star more or less the mass of our Sun has not happened yet and evidently will be a rare find. And if we expect to explore, not to mention, colonize these planets we are in for some drastic changes of environment, even if we do find one more or less like ours. The chemical makeup of the planet, the illumination character of the star as well as the gravity variations will make adaptation a high-tech proposition. The drama of this exploration which is going on in the 21st Century and probably for the third millennium is one to watch however and changes every day. This book will be out of date shortly but the excitement of the discoveries is well laid out and this is a permanent record of that process in its early days (now).

Very interesting, though some articles should be updated By Jorge Santos Simón The subject of exoplanets is really exciting, and this little funny book gives you a good glimpse to it though a series of interesting articles, But do not expect a coherent, historical review of the ascent and successes of this research area. I remove the 5th star because of this and even more because some articles are very old and outdated; they should be replaced or rewritten in the light of new knowledge.

Update information presented in an interesting and very readable way. Highly recommended to anyone interested in the subject.

Review

"Working with Jeff reminds me of a quote from Michelangelo, 'I saw an angel in the marble and carved until I set him free.' Jeff’s tools have helped me develop solid premise and log lines, and to chisel my stories free from the stone. This book will help you do the same."

Michael Perri―Staff Writer, NBC’s - State of Affairs

"After reading Jeff’s terrific book I felt like rushing to my desk, new tools in hand, and fixing all my unsold screenplays. I highly recommend to anyone writing a screenplay or novel."

Nick Castle―Writer/Director, Escape From New York, Hook, August Rush, Last Star Fighter, The Boy Who Could Fly, Tap, Dennis the Menace

"Before, I used to write myself into a corner, but thanks to Jeff Lyons' premise tools now I can see my story’s structure from the outside, to see what's working and what could be stronger. This book will help you draw a map through the story forest, rather than getting lost in the trees. I've used this material with my students with the same beneficial effect as with my own writing. I highly recommend this book."

Malena Watrous―Author, If You Follow Me―Head Instructor Stanford University Online Writers Studio

"There is no book like this in the marketplace. It will help writers, producers, and directors, and save everyone from wasted time writing drafts to find a story. I wish I had this book when I was in film school."

David Jeffery―Producer, Fox’s - Bones, PBS’s – American Family, Lesson Plan

"This is a book for which many of us have been waiting, and if you are at all like me, incorporating Jeff's ideas and guidance into your work can make all the difference."

Barnet Bain―Producer, What Dreams May Come― Writer/Producer, The Celestine Prophecy

"Story structure changed my writing life, and the magician who taught it to me was Jeff Lyons. Every writer on the planet needs coffee, chocolate, and this book!"

By C J Singh .Reviewed by C J Singh (Berkeley, California). This Book Is a Simplistic Summary like "Cliff Notes"This morning, I heard Jeff Lyons touting his newly published book at the famous Book Passage Store in Corte Madera, California. As I listened to his talk and observed the book's headings and subheadings such as The Premise, The Moral Premise, The 7-Step Process, Key Concepts, Invisible Structure, it became increasingly clear to me that it is a simplistic repackaging, a "Cliff Notes" version, of the first few chapters of John Truby's 421-page THE ANATOMY OF STORY. Truby's book was published in 2007, preceded by many years of teaching classes internationally that it has now become a contemporary classic.According to Truby's website, the total number of attendees at his classes exceeds forty thousand. So far, I have heard just one promotional talk by Truby and that was at Mrs. Dalloway's Bookstore in Berkeley, shortly after the publication of the book. Impressed by his presentation, I studied his book with care and posted a copy of my review on amazon.com. Later, I posted several addenda. (I haven't been in any of his classes except a 2-hour webinar, but I plan to attend his novel-writing one-day class that he and his novelist wife, Leslie Lehr, will be presenting in San Francisco on 19 September, 2015)Frankly, I must point out that Truby's masterly book (available for $14.95 at amazon) is a much better value, replete as it is with detailed story-structuring examples from classic and contemporary films, plays, novels, and short-stories. Moreover, Truby includes nine exercises to help you structure YOUR work-in-progress. These exercises appear in nine chapters titled:Premise; The Seven Key Steps of Story Structure;Character;Moral Argument;Story World;Symbol Web;Plot;Scene Weave;Scene Construction and Symphonic Dialogue. The above chapter titles are from Truby's book.Even a casual acquaintance with Lyons' book will show the basis of my review. So, why the second star for Lyons' book?Although a simplistic summary, it will appeal to "Cliff Notes" self-deceiving addicts.-- c j singh

By Aoife This book helps you get from the vague "I think I have a idea for a book" stage to the reality of having a strong workable story on paper. It provides concrete and practical, rather than abstract, steps to how to build your story. I'd recommend it not only to fledgling writers but also "pantsers" who are having difficulty identifying the very important bones of their story.

By Brenda McClain I am writer (literary fiction -- yeah, one of those!), who has struggled with story development. No more. Jeff's Anatomy of a Premise Line has come to my rescue. I'd say I'd move it to the front of my shelf of "How-to-write" books, but, actually, I can get rid of all of the others.

From the Back Cover Excerpt from The Beauty of Lies:Harper Angel WadeLetting myself into a stranger's apartment isn't the worst of sins. Mr. Expose has something that belongs to me, and I intend to get it. I'm not a real criminal. I committed my last illegal act in grade school when I shoplifted a My Little Pony for a friend. Later, regret set in and I imagined being hauled away and thrown into the slammer. I took the toy back to the store and slipped it onto the shelf. Incarceration didn't scare me as much as a tongue-lashing from my daddy, the town pastor.Breaking and entering is my first official crime of adulthood. My decisions these days have returned to the devil-made-me-do-it variety. I push a desk drawer closed and continue to search through the paperwork in a box on his desk. A water bill, a flyer, a grocery list. There's a pamphlet for renter's insurance. Boy, does he ever need some. There are all kinds of nut jobs in this world who would rob him blind. If I could advise the guy on how to avoid this situation in the future, I'd be sure to tell him that his apartment was a break-in waiting to happen. He conveniently left a key for me right under the welcome mat, as if that isn't the first place a burglar would look. And, while I'm handing out advice, I'd caution him not to be so assholey. His recent emails to me were downright rude and as short as my attention span during Sunday sermons. In fact, his replies weren't at all like his introspective musings on the Mr. Expose blog. No. Those are poetic masterpieces that dig into the psyche and pull back the curtain on evil. But Mr. Expose blogger, also known as Leo Jensen, refuses to return my postcard. He recited all this baloney about policy and not mailing things back when people change their minds. Yada yada. I blame him for my foray into the dark world of thievery. Harper Angel Wade--one account of felony, stealing a postcard.

This is one of those times that I'm glad that I didn't read any reviews or info about a book before I picked it up because I probably would have been turned off and not picked it up at all. Sometimes I do read reviews before picking up a novel but I always stick to the higher ranking ones just because I don't want to hear the bad stuff until I decide it's bad stuff.Anyhow ... I thought that the chemistry between the main characters was pretty great. I enjoyed watching their relationship ebb and flow with what was going on within the pages. There were a few times that I rolled my eyes because things seemed to happen a bit too easily in some of the situations and it wasn't really realistic to me. That being said ... I really enjoyed the interactions between the ex, Leo and Harper. It was almost like a train-wreck that I couldn't turn away from. I was just itching to see what this ex was going to do next and if they would cause problems and heaven help me, let them be bad problems because Brinda Berry is an awesome writer who can write some interesting dialogue between characters that will keep you on your toes. The storyline was interesting ... I don't think that I've read anything like this before and the twists and turns were unexpected and highly amusing. For the most part, I never really knew where the plot was heading or what was going to happen next. That's really a breath of fresh air because I've just read so many books that I can sometimes pick out what is going to happen next and then I turn into the book-fun-sucker since I'm ruining everything for myself.I'll probably read something else by this author again. I enjoyed just about everything about this novel except one thing. The copy that I received didn't say that it was an advance reader copy. ARC's are sometimes full of errors with punctuation, grammar and spelling. This book had quite a few issues but it was not written anywhere in it that it was an ARC. I really hope that it is and this version isn't being sold anywhere.* I received this novel in exchange for an honest review *

Something that could be very damaging if it got out. What better way to get something back than to get to know the enemy? But what if you end up falling for him in the mean time? Oh things get real complicated, real fast.I read this book until I couldn't read it no more. Meaning I read it until I was done. Finished. Complete. It was a fantastic book and we even get to see a character from one of her other series: Gunner. (Psst...I am looking forward to his story so much.) But here I was inhaling the story and adoring these characters. Yep, this book was the total package for me. Its blurb was one that attracted me to the story but the writing kept me hooked the whole time.Berry came up with a fun, ingenious plot that at first I wondered if she could pull it off. Oh me of little faith. Oh course she could pull it off and then some. This story was just so amusing and sweet I couldn't help but read, read, read. And the romance had me falling in love right along with the characters. How could you not? It was absolutely perfect! So not only am I falling for the romance…I am falling for characters. Even with Harper in the wrong with her actions, I still cared about whether or not she got her card back from Leo. I still wanted them to fall madly and hopelessly in love with each other and let the past be damned. But that freaking past has a way of ruining even the best of romances. Maybe, just maybe, they will be able to work through all the lies and the hurts.Readers, listen up! This is one book you will not want to pass up. It is the perfect, romantic read and I am just smitten with it. Get it today and see why I thought so highly of it and this author. 5 Stars!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Another winner from this author! By Holly G (epiloguebookblog) When author Brinda Berry puts out something new, I drop everything I’m doing and dig in. So when she granted me a review copy of the first in her new series, I was over the moon about getting started. That being said, The Beauty of Lies exceeded my high expectations and then some! What I noticed most prevalently about main characters Leo and Harper is how real they felt. Both were characters I could relate to, as their issues with trust—learning whom to trust—can be universally understood. The author’s writing hooked me from the very beginning. The back-and-forth email communication in the first few pages intrigued me, and Harper’s first chapter was masterfully done. I felt like I was experiencing every bit of that scene right along with her: the suspense, the adrenaline-rush, that mingling of hope and fear.Because of how effectively they’d been characterized, I understood Leo and Harper’s every action. Learning about their unique situations (thankfully not the back stories that have become trite and all-too-common) kept me engaged from start to finish. In addition to solid main characters, readers are gifted with a tight-knit cast of secondary characters that I, for one, am excited to see fleshed out in future installments. (It’s no secret that I have a crush on Gunner, who played a small role in the author’s Serendipity series.)As usual, Brinda Berry delivers characters with depth, spot-on description, and an all-around highlight-worthy manuscript. And, as I’ve mentioned before in another review, she’s a wonder at crafting similes. It would take me a year (or longer) to come up with comparisons that effective.Consider this one highly recommended, bookish friends!

My name is John Davis. I ran for President of the United States in 2012. You may not know my name. In fact, I can hear some of you saying, "Who the heck is John Davis? What ticket did he run on?" You may not know me, but the people who heard me speak in the 2,313 counties that I visited during my campaign do. This was typical of the kind of interactions I had. A woman in the front row of a Waverly, Kansas diner stood up and said, "I'm sick of career politicians. What makes you different?" In response, I held up a three-foot-long pipe wrench. The wrench is my trademark. It's painted with the stars and stripes of the American flag. "This wrench says two things about me. First and foremost, it says I love this amazing country of ours more than anything. And second, it says I'd do anything to restore our country to greatness and preserve our freedom." This is my story.

"The troops in town are in high spirits, and wish for [another] attack in this quarter; they are all excellent marksmen, and fine, bold fellows... Lord Dunmore may now see he has not cowards to deal with!" Pinkney's Virginia Gazette 26 October, 1775 This bold statement, written in response to the outbreak of warfare in Virginia in late October 1775, conveyed both a sense of confidence, and a sense of relief, that Virginians had finally stood firm against the forces of the Royal Governor, Lord Dunmore. Six months after the bloodshed of Lexington and Concord (and the inauguration of the Revolutionary War), Virginians had fired their first shots in anger and repulsed a small squadron of British ships bent on burning the town of Hampton. The fighting that occurred in Hampton spread to the James River and Virginia's Southside, where engagements at Kemp's Landing and Great Bridge led to the eventual destruction of Norfolk, Virginia's largest town. Combat continued sporadically into the summer of 1776, but ended in July when Lord Dunmore was driven off Gwynn's Island and abruptly sailed for New York. Dunmore's departure ushered in four years of relative peace in Virginia (except for the settlers on the frontier). Thousands of Virginians continued to fight, but they did so on distant battlefields to the north, south, and west of Virginia. Except for an occasional British raid or frequent engagement on the frontier, Virginia was relatively unscathed by warfare. This changed in 1781 with the arrival of General Benedict Arnold, the notorious traitor and turncoat, and 1,600 British troops. Ten months of nearly continuous warfare commenced with Arnold's arrival, during which British troop levels in the state eventually surpassed 7,000. It was time for Virginia to suffer through her fair share of the war. This book chronicles the war in Virginia from start to finish (1775-81), shedding light, and recognition, on many overlooked Virginia engagements. Readers will discover that although the war started off modestly in Virginia, it concluded with a dramatic flourish that required bold action and some good fortune for the allies to succeed.

Lynn A UNIVERSAL APPEARANCE OF WAR: THE REVOLUTIONARY WAR IN VIRGINIA, 1775-1781MICHAEL CECERE, SR.HERITAGE BOOKS, 2014QUALITY SOFTCOVER, $35.50, 424 PAGES, MAPS, INDEX, BIBLIOGRAPHY, CHRONOLOGYAlong with Massachusetts, Virginia was a leader in the movement that culminated in the American Revolution although, despite the burning oratory of Patrick Henry and the enlightened political writings of Thomas Jefferson and other brilliant native spokesmen, Virginia was never as politically discontent or radical as Massachusetts. In 1773, the burgesses at Williamsburg (the capital since 1699), led by Richard Henry Lee formed an inter-colonial Committee of Correspondence. The Virginia leaders proposed in May, 1774; a congress of all the colonies. Delegates were chosen at the First Virginia Convention in August, 1774. And in September, 1774, Virginia's Peyton Randolph was elected president of the First Continental Congress. The next year, in June, 1775, Washington was selected as commander-in-chief of the Continental Army. After the patriots forced Royal Governor John Murray, Earl of Dunmore to flee; the Fifth Virginia Convention (6 May-29 June 1776) declared the colony's independence. They further instructed the Virginia delegates to the Continental Congress to propose general colonial independence which resulted in the Declaration of Independence written by Thomas Jefferson.Although the British had burned Norfolk in January, 1776, but they didn't invade the state in force until 1779, when they seized Portsmouth and Suffolk. As the Continental force under the command of Lafayette marched to Virginia in 1780 which was followed by a larger force under the command of Washington with a French fleet sailing to contain the British forces under Cornwallis at Yorktown. They surrendered on 19 October 1781. George Rogers Clark led a force of Virginians and wrested control of the Northwest Territory from the British in 1779.This book chronicles the war in Virginia from start to finish (1775-1781), shedding light, and recognition, on many overlooked Virginia engagements. Its history is an epic populated by dreamers, madmen and geniuses who left an indelible imprint on the national character.

Above all, it is a place where the 21st century collides with the 12th, where the radiant future was born and the past is not really the past.

This book is the first to tell the extraordinary yet unheralded history of monoclonal antibodies. Often referred to as Mabs, they are unfamiliar to most nonscientists, yet these microscopic protein molecules are everywhere, quietly shaping our lives and healthcare. Discovered in the mid-1970s in the laboratory where Watson and Crick had earlier unveiled the structure of DNA, Mabs have radically changed understandings of the pathways of disease. They have enabled faster, cheaper, and more accurate clinical diagnostic testing on a vast scale. And they have played a fundamental role in pharmaceutical innovation, leading to such developments as recombinant interferon and insulin, and personalized drug therapies such as Herceptin. Today Mabs constitute six of the world’s top ten blockbuster drugs and make up a third of new introduced treatments.   Lara V. Marks recounts the risks and opposition that a daring handful of individuals faced while discovering and developing Mabs, and she addresses the related scientific, medical, technological, business, and social challenges that arose. She offers a saga of entrepreneurs whose persistence and creativity ultimately changed the healthcare landscape and brought untold relief to millions of patients. Even so, as Marks shows, controversies over Mabs remain, and she examines current debates over the costs and effectiveness of these innovative drugs.

Review “A masterful, original, and compelling account of how monoclonal antibodies progressed from a dicey laboratory technology to Nobel worthiness, and then were forged into a multibillion-dollar biomedical industry. A landmark history.”—Daniel J. Kevles, Stanley Woodward Professor of History, Yale University (Daniel J. Kevles)“Relevant, authoritative, and accessible to an educated but non-expert reader, The Lock and Key of Medicine provides a fascinating history of the development of Mabs.”—Janice M. Reichert, Editor-in-Chief, mAbs (Janice M. Reichert)“Extraordinary. . . . The amount of scholarship presented here is stunning, and constitutes a magnificent advance in the historiography of pharmacology and the pharmaceutical industry.”—Malcolm Nicolson, University of Glasgow (Malcolm Nicolson)“This unique, impressive and well-researched volume not only lays out the scientific basis underlying the monoclonal antibody revolution, but also deals sensitively with their evolution as commercial reagents and therapeutics.”—Herman Waldmann, Oxford University (Herman Waldmann)“A fascinating picture of one of the most important advances in modern medicine. Lock and Key provides insights for researchers, policy-makers, and all who care about the future of medical science.”—Donald L. Drakeman, Centre for Health Leadership & Enterprise, University of Cambridge (Donald L. Drakeman)“Lara Marks relates the 40-year history of monoclonal antibodies and also brilliantly captures the personalities and ideologies of the many individuals involved along with the clashes and controversies along the way.”—Mike Clark, Cambridge University (Mike Clark)“Marks gives us a truly amazing story of medical knowledge, drug development, and biotechnology involving monoclonal antibodies. The quiet revolution in our current therapeutic and diagnostic tool kit, based on Mabs, is nothing short of awesome.”—William Summers, Yale University (William Summers)‘…written in an accessible style, Marks brings to life many of those who contributed to what she rightly describes as a transformative ability to understand, diagnose and treat disease.’—Sir Geoffrey Owen, the Financial Times.   (Sir Geoffrey Owen Financial Times 2015-08-22)

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Excellent Presentation of the Development of Mabs By Dr. Terrence McGarty Monoclonal antibodies are a class of antibodies which on the one hand reflect a response to a specific antigen and on the other hand can activate the immune system to respond to the cells presenting to that antigen and have them eliminated if possible.Back in the mid-1960s when I first came across the clinical use of antibodies what was frequently employed was gamma globulin, a massive amount of mixed IgG, immunoglobulin G, from many people and it was somewhat tried as another treatment for a variety of disorders including some cases of mumps. However the specificity of IgGs and the other immunoglobulins had not yet been ascertained. As this identification progressed it became apparent that specificity of the antibodies could perhaps be a tool to attack certain disorders, including cancers. This then led to many examinations of ways to produce large volumes of specific antibodies. The result was the development of monoclonal antibodies. Simply this is the chimeric combination of antibodies developed to attack a specific target and a vehicle cell that had immortality to bind this product to so it became a small factory for production. From this came, after a significant amount of effort, the monoclonal antibody, and in turn the new therapeutics ending in –mab. The work of Marks, The Lock and Key of Medicine, is an effort to tell this story. It starts with some of the early researchers in the UK who persevered to get some of the initial samples available and the ever changing dynamic of researchers and clinicians. As with so many efforts of this type, there is an ever challenging set of steps that the researchers and the clinicians go through, some winning and some losing. The early days of the late 1960s, when in the practice of medicine little was truly understood but the tools for the researchers were coming on quickly. The author takes the reader through the many individuals and the many crises and victories as they progressed. The book focuses on the many individuals and their steps in developing MABs and the ultimate commercialization of them and their application to human therapeutics. As we progress we have seen basically four classes of Mabs. They are: murine or mouse versions with therapeutics ending in –omab, chimeric murine and human Mabs with the ending –ximab, the humanized Mabs ending in –zumab, and finally all human Mabs ending in –umab. Mabs are now one of the arms in treating a variety of diseases from cancer to arthritis and colitis. At the same time they have become “big pharma” and the author takes the reader through this process in some detail.Overall, the book and an excellent articulation of the people, the conflicts, the achievement, and the institutional progress. From that perspective is an excellent contribution. On the other side it would have been more helpful to have provided some simpler introductions to Mabs and the immune system. For a well-educated reader this is an interesting tale of scientific and clinical development. It does lack a feeling of personal involvement. The description of the individuals is in my opinion quite arm’s length and unlike other works of similar genre this is a discussion of facts and events and dates. What I especially missed was the recent explosion of applications. For example in advanced melanoma there is the use of Mabs and pathway control therapeutics such as BRAF inhibitors and MEK inhibitors. This raises the issue of how does one see a blending of these two or are they not so complementary. On the other hand there are certain cancers such a prostate cancer which may be so complex and changing at such a rapid rate that Mabs would just not work. It would have been useful for the author to have contributed some substance to the debate. One other item which may make the book a bit limited. It would have been helpful for the less experienced reader to have explained the intricacies of the immune system, namely where antibodies come from and what they do. There is also the complex issue of interfering receptors like PD-1 which can down regulate many Ab therapeutics. This is a complex and ever moving story but worth the attempt.Overall, again, this is an excellent book albeit for possibly a smaller community of engaged readers.

An important chapter in recent biomedical history—beautifully recorded By Jan Vilcek An important chapter in recent biomedical history—beautifully recorded. In her latest book, Dr. Lara Marks, an accomplished medical historian, recounts the extraordinary history of monoclonal antibodies, protein molecules that have profoundly changed many aspects of the practice of medicine. In contrast to ordinary antibodies made in the human or animal body usually in response to infectious agents, monoclonal antibodies are produced in cells grown artificially outside the body. Marks explains the science and the human drama behind the discovery of the process of monoclonal antibody production in the 1970s by Argentinian-born César Milstein and German-born Georges Köhler working in Cambridge, England. In what has turned out to be a historic blunder, the responsible British authorities failed to file patent applications for the discovery, believing there was not enough evidence for the potential usefulness of the technology. Products based on monoclonal antibody technology now generate hundreds of billions US dollars in annual sales. These products include therapeutic drugs, diagnostic products and research reagents. Several of the highest-selling therapeutic drugs used for the treatment of cancer, autoimmune disorders and other ailments are based on monoclonal antibodies. As a historian, Marks writes in language accessible to informed laymen. Yet she also includes enough technical detail—clearly explained. Descriptions of some of the twists and turns in the development of the monoclonal antibody technology and of the resulting products read like mystery stories. This thoroughly researched and clearly written volume will be appreciated by both medical professionals and by the general public interested in the major medical advances made possible by the use of monoclonal antibodies.

“If, as seems most likely, there was in South America an ancient development of civilized human life, out of which arose the civilizations found in Peru and Central America, its antiquity was much greater than can be comprehended by the current chronologies.” -John D. Baldwin A confidant to many notable thinkers of his time, including Ralph Waldo Emerson, Charles Darwin, James Russell Lowell, and particularly his friend Charles Sumner. John D. Baldwin asserts that the origins of human civilization arose among an Arabian or Northeast African people, the Cushites, in pre-historic times. “If, as seems most likely, there was in South America an ancient development of civilized human life, out of which arose the civilizations found in Peru and Central America, its antiquity was much greater than can be comprehended by the current chronologies.” -John D. He tries his hand at matchmaking and thinks he has found the ‘ideal’ groom, one of his banking associates. As far as he is concerned a woman’s place is in the kitchen. But she refuses to be patronized. She wants justice and is determined to help despite his strong opposition.

Mail Order bride arrives only to find her future husband dead. Twin brother and deputies do all they can to find the killer with the ex-bride in tow.

PDF Ebook You Know My Name: The Lovers, The Dreamers, and Bobby Scott, by Kevin Pearce

“This is a book about Bobby Scott. Or rather it is a book that starts with Bobby Scott and ends with Bobby Scott. It is all to do with discovering his music and what it leads to. It is a meditation on musical contexts and connections. The book uses Bobby as a totem, in terms of wide-ranging interests and varied activities. It is a celebration of a magnificent musical journey and illogical career progression.” Let Daniel Williams explain further about this new chapter of dub history: Perhaps you won’t actually know his name, but if you’ve any interest in the jazz, soul, pop, folk, blues or Brazilian music of the 1960s and 70s, then you will almost certainly have heard either the songs or the piano playing of Bobby Scott. Take ‘A taste of honey’, recorded by the Beatles for their first LP – that’s one of Bobby’s. ‘He ain’t heavy, he’s my brother’, another. Following on from his previous book, ‘A moment worth waiting for’, which focussed on the early 1980s and took the equally adventurous Vic Godard as its touchstone, here Kevin Pearce traces an insightful and alternative path through the music of the two previous decades – alternative in the sense that Bobby Scott and many of the singers and musicians with whom he worked have not been anything like as celebrated as they deserve to be. Bobby Scott’s approach was genre-blind if not genre-busting, illustrative of the plurality, interconnectedness, and cross-pollinating tendencies of a certain type of musical adventurer. He was, in the best sense of the word, a mastermind, but one who never lost sight of the gifts which individual singers possessed. This was a man who packed a lot of living into too short a life. From precocious and energetic youth to grey-bearded patrician, Bobby composed, arranged, conducted, produced, sang, and played on countless sets of music, working with an amazing cast of fellow musicians and singers, including Bobby Darin, Jackie Paris, Chet Baker, Roland Kirk, Quincy Jones, Aretha Franklin, Timi Yuro, Nana Mouskouri, Esther Ofarim, Luiz Bonfá, Eumir Deodato, Catherine Howe, Marvin Gaye, and Dionne Warwick – and just as many less well-known performers, each treated by the writer on the merits of the work they left behind rather than plaudits gathered along the way. It’s a journey which ‘You know my name’ maps in meticulous detail and with great affection, building a portrait of a gifted, fascinating, and generous man, as well as a rich and enlightening history of the music of the times. Among others, Astrud Gilberto, Stan Getz, Gary McFarland and Lalo Schifrin all also feature prominently in the story as it diverges from its central character to record the influential effect that Brazilian bossa nova had on music in the United States from the early 1960s onwards. The book becomes an evocation of the depth, breadth and staying power of the great American and Brazilian songbooks, and in so doing, an extended treatise on the art of singing. Bobby Scott – himself a vocalist of raw emotional power – is rightfully rescued from the cracks in history down which he has fallen, and along with him, dozens of fine singers and musicians worthy of far greater attention than they received at the time. “Kevin Pearce is a writer whose work includes the acclaimed work of pop mythography ‘Something Beginning With O’ and film scripts for ‘Finisterre’ and ‘What Have You Done Today, Mervyn Day?’, two of the Paul Kelly/Saint Etienne London films.”

Brilliant read By Henry Cooper As a Jazz/Big Band buff among other kinds of music I love, this book written by Kevin who spent a while researching and gathering all the goodies for this great unsung sensation who's recognition is not well deserved nor being credited enough.I think now that this book it's out, I bet for all the fans, lovers, and people who knew, care, love, appreciate and worked with him should check it out. Also a big shoutout and thanks to Danny Barrett for keeping Bobby's name and legacy alive and well.
