"Inevitable" is a superb mix of hard core science with philosophy, delicately underlined with a romantic thread. It doesn't dumb down scientific ideas - it adds to them and 'runs away' with them to create a novel which leaves you panting at the end thinking "Blimey...this could actually happen!" Is this a huge thought experiment laid out as a novel by Steven Cotton, or is it a description of what is to come?Dr Jake Banner's Egyptian friend, Dr Syed Azad, discovers an ancient stone tablet which bears Schrodinger's equation on it. Jake enlists help from a friend and colleague, Dr Linda Cooper, and together they visit Syed in Egypt to glean more information relating to the tablet - it's origin, and how the message came to be there. Analyses show that there is additional information to the equation, and that there are a further 2 tablets with similar mysteries surrounding them. The story is centered around both the meaning and the origin of the messages hidden within these 3 stone tablets.Overall, it seems that Syed does the work and Jake does the thinking with a little help and romance from Linda. It's a bizarre form of muscle, brains and beauty."Inevitable" is written in the first person - and needs to be because much of the beauty of this novel is the thought process that Jake undertakes. This isn't the mundane "I thought I was hungry so I ate something", it's on a higher intellectual level. He uses quotes from research and novels that he's read, even imaginary conversations with eminent people inside his head(!). The follow-on thought processes and introspection are what drives the plot forwards.Several thought experiments and theories are thrown into the mixing pot and carried forward to varying extents to see if any hold any merit. Was Schrodinger scooped by 5 thousand years, or were the tablets transported back in time to ancient Egypt from the future? Are there multiple universes and / or time lines? To what extent do ontological paradoxes mean that our experiences are pre-programmed, and crucially - what does that mean? Sometimes though, I found that the assumptions within the logical way of thinking things through seemed a bit too abrupt without any backing.Mundane bits are not left out. Rather, this is how it might actually happen, complete with conversations in coffee bars, chats on planes and hanging around waiting for phone calls. Sometimes it drags on a bit with a lot of attention given to Egyptian culture and politics, and the small talk between Jake and Linda, but admittedly these angles make it all the more realistic."Inevitable" is the first book of a series. Whilst the final explanation is not underlined and finalised (that's the nature of this novel), there are other questions and loose ends which remain open. That said, "Inevitable" makes a good stand-alone read - but I'm glad there is a Book 2 (and I should admit here that I've read selected sections of the opening chapters and it's looking very promising!)Overall, I think "Inevitable" is a piece of excellent science fiction and says it how it is.

I had no idea what this book might be about so I decided to read it and find out! Am I ever glad I did!This is probably one of the best written books I have ever read. I don’t mean that the story and everything is perfect, it’s just that the writing flows so easily that it is an extremely easy book to read, even though it has a ton of technical science jargon. The two main characters, well, three really, are an Egyptologist, a Physicist, and a Molecular Biologist. That’s two men and a woman who live in very different parts of the world. The Egyptologist, Dr. Syed Azad is an Egyptian Muslim who lives quite nicely in Cairo. His, at first professional acquaintance, Dr. Jake Banner, lives in California and specifically is on the faculty of Stanford University teaching mathematics and physics. The female of the group, Dr. Linda Cooper, also is a member of the Sanford University faculty and so lives somewhere in the close vicinity of Dr. Banner. She is a very close friend of Jake, but it is right now, just a professional friendship in which they discuss mutual scientific stuff on occasion. Linda doesn’t know Dr. Azad, Syed, yet, but she will soon get to know him pretty well.Syed calls Jake one morning and tells him that he has in his possession an Egyptian tablet of incredible age with something very peculiar inscribed in it. He says he has validated the authenticity of the tablet and its age has been verified through several normal scientific methods used by archeologist. The only problem with this tablet, he tells, Jake, is that it has a the Schrödinger equation inscribed in it! OK, for all you physicists out there, you’re going to say, “I know what that is.”, and you probably do, but I don’t think you’d expect to see an equation just a century old inscribed on a tablet that’s dates back to three thousand B.C.! And there could be even more tablets available that have other equations and information that just shouldn’t have existed in that time period.So, these three scientist get together in Egypt at the home of Syed and seek to figure out what this all means. How could the ancient Egyptians know of or be aware of current mathematics involving quantum particles?The book is part Sherlock Holmes, James Bond, and the movie, “Love Story”. There is a lot of intrigue and mysterious stuff that these three have to get involved in to secure more tablets and then figure out what they contain. Once they get started, there’s no stopping them. They discover some pretty significant information that appears to come from the future; but who’s future? There’s even a glimpse of a possible cataclismic event that may happen in our very near future, but will it happen now that they know about it?Although the science if pretty heavy at times, if you’re like me, you’ll just let it pass on by overhead. I’m not a scientist, but I can understand some of this stuff. In the end, this book turns out to be very different that what you expect. Remember, I said it was part “Love Story”. A very sneaky author, indeed!

He is a scientist determined to seek out the ultimate truth in the new discoveries made in Egypt about Sumerian clay tablets that contain modern day scientific info, such as DNA, cosmic particles and Schrodinger's equation. I can see that the nobler aspects of my higher self challenging whatever I had believed in. Still probing and searching just like this professor.Jake, Dr Cooper and Dr Azad have uncovered something on the level of "Scientific Dead Sea Scrolls". This is their story of global research from America to the Middle East. Their findings seem to validate the fact that--Not only is the universe stranger than we think, it is even stranger than we can think.I really like the tanacity of the team. They have a stronger determination to conquer their mistakes. They are not ashamed to admit it. Which serve a good model for me to overcome my own mistakes. Usually mistake come in 3 stages, like what they have been through...1. Failing to recognize that they couldn't alter the future2. Failing to recognize their mistake3. Failure to correct their course before it led to tragedy and the loss of innocent livesThere are some issues that I thought could have been better dealt with.1. Nature of the discovery2. More examination of Dr. Azad3. How the ancient tablets shed light on new scientific breakthroughs.However, this goes to show that this great book has enormous success potential in producing sequels.Subconsciously I am already comparing this new author with masters like Eric Von Daniken and Zecharia Sitchin and thatis kind of a little unfair.This book has all the latest scientific concepts, controversies, paradigm shifts spelt out in a very readable manner. You feel that the charactersare so real as they eat pizza, drink starbucks, wear Perry Ellis shirt and drive BMW convertible. You feel the sense of excitement when the research work is now going from Palo Alto to Cairo. You feel updated on contemporary world events when the author also mentions their workis hampered greatly by Arab Spring movements and robberies of ancient artefacts.After reading this book, I have greater respects for intellectual rebels and renegades, who will not conform to the accepted orthodoxy and prevailing public opinion of their times. There have been many cases in history where revolutionary and breakthrough ideas have great merits but are rejected out of hand by the scientific community and the society at large. Eventually the great ideas win out over time. More powerful than the march of giant armies is an idea whose time has come. The triumph of determination, relentless seeking, brilliance, blood and toil willusher in the ultinate victory. This is the most moving of human spirit !
