I wanted a CD so I could listen in the car and did not see the little print on the photo of the book that says "listen to audio tracks online". So there is no physical CD like the last version had, you have to be able to access the web, when you need to listen to the audio. For a student with limited time, I would have rather had an CD.

Too many silly jokes and not enough substance By stephen howe I have always enjoyed David Pogue's work, but thie bI have always enjoyed Mr.Pogue's work, but with book he is trying too hard to get laughs. He is a witty and intelligent writer,he does not need to resort to hammy, silly jibes. He assumes that people enjoy dumb levity, once or twice maybe, but not on a constant basis. A shame really,in between the silliness, there is some useful information to be gleaned. Perhaps he should consider rewriting the book, cut out the silly unfunny jokes and write clear and erudite prose, which he has been doing elsewhere for years!

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. outdated yet informative By history student @ LSU I read this book as a requirement for my Roman History class. Although I enjoyed it, most of the political references the author makes are analogies to the political climate of Britain and could be omitted without detracting from the otherwise well-written and well-researched book. The footnotes are leave something to be desired, and unless the reader has knowledge of Latin or Greek, the author's context is not enough to understand some passages.Overall, it is an excellent but at times boring read. Given the time period (1892), it is fortunate that Fowler takes such a comprehensive approach to the study of Julius Caesar. The chapters on the Gallic Wars will either keep you turning the pages or prying open your eyes, depending on your interest in the subject. The only other criticism is that it's a "safe" approach to examining the life and influence of Caesar, drawing very little from questionable or "nearly certain" sources, relying heavily on Caesar's own journals. This excludes much of what other people say about him, particulary what is written during his lifetime. Fowler's approach is more praising than critical, and it is biased at least slightly pro-Caesar. Reading this book will give you an excellent idea of what some people thought about Caesar, but you may have to read another book on Caesar in order to draw your own conclusion.

8 of 8 people found the following review helpful. Great book about a great war By Henrik Pettersson This was a really great book to those people, like me, who can't read enough about the second world war. I really enjoyed this book because the author (chant)has written very close to the truth about the war, especially the limitations of the german industry. This has gone practically unnoticed by so many books, that people in general fail to grasp the enormous problems the german armed forces faced. It also gives some great insights in why the german generals were so much better than its allied counterparts. A great book to read and I recommend it deeply.

6 of 7 people found the following review helpful. Not for the Beginner By John G. Hilliard This book is a bit of a heavy history more geared for academic study then edge of your seat page-turner. As with any book of this size there are always bound to be interesting bits of information, and this book does deliver that. There are a number of details on army group makeup, command structure and tactics as well as a good review of German Army campaign citations and medals. If you are interested in the topic then this is a good book to read, if you are a new comer to this field then this is not the first book to pick up.

Crime fiction — Reinvented!

What if a serial killer from the seventies was reawakened?

John Turner has recently retired from the building trade. He’s sixty, lives in a small house in rural Kent with his wife, Treena. Like many people just retired, he’s scratching around for something to do. Unlike most people, however, John used to be a serial killer. When a documentary about his alter-ego is aired on BBC4, and the presenter suggests he wouldn’t be able to do what he did back then, due to advancements in forensic science, something deep inside him threatens to awake. “He’s done in fifty pages what Lionel Shriver did in — what was it? — seven hundred pages?” — a reviewer. “Some things never change. Like the polyethylene sheets you can buy from the hardware store for decorating jobs : they’ve always been fantastic at isolating a victim from personal belongings, such as car boots.” - John Turner.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. very good story By J. Gunnar Grey Not a whodunnit but a whydunnit — not a mystery but an exploration of the mind of a killer in day-to-day life. Solidly written, with excellent characterization, a good plot, and interesting story structure, and one of the sharpest published layouts I've seen. The ending left me a little unsatisfied, but the fault doubtless lies with me — I was expecting something more violent — and not the author. It's a real ending; there's no cliffhanger or buy-the-next-book trick. If you enjoy crime fiction, this is well worth a read. Four solid stars.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. The Tarantula of Tottenham Returns By MissScarlett Told in the first person, I was really enjoying this book when it came to a sudden stop. Otherwise I'd have given it 5 stars. I hope that means there'll be a second book. Good writing, lots of details, and of course, a very creepy protagonist.

Charles Fredrick Worth was the first couturier to become famous. The lavish Paris creations created by him and his son, Jean-Philippe, set the style for Victorian ladies of fashion including American aristocrats and European Royalty. Artist Charlotte Whatley has lent her extraordinary talent to a new paper doll book published by Paper Studio Press. Eight fantastically ornate gowns from the House of Worth are ready to cut out and dress two elegantly corseted fashion plate ladies. The Worth father and son set the fashion trends as the silhouette evolved from the huge crinoline to the statuesque bustle and train. Each breathtaking gown is drawn with exacting detail, capturing the rich fabrics, delicate trims and ornamental obsession of the turn of the 20th century and is accompanied by informative historical information. Victoriana at the House of Worth is a paper doll book of romantic fashions to enchant collectors and fashion historians.

Gallipoli: the mere name summons the story of this well-known campaign of the First World War. And the story of Gallipoli, where in August 1915 the Allied forces made their last valiant effort against the Turks, is one of infamous might-have-beens. If only the Allies had held out a little longer, pushed a little harder, had better luck—Gallipoli might have been the decisive triumph that knocked the Ottoman Empire out of the First World War. But the story is just that, author Rhys Crawley tells us: a story. Not only was the outcome at Gallipoli not close, but the operation was flawed from the start, and an inevitable failure.

A painstaking effort to set the historical record straight, Climax at Gallipoli examines the performance of the Allies’ Mediterranean Expeditionary Force from the beginning of the Gallipoli Campaign to the bitter end. Crawley reminds us that in 1915, the second year of the war, the Allies were still trying to adapt to a new form of warfare, with static defense replacing the maneuver and offensive strategies of earlier British doctrine. In the attempt both the MEF at Gallipoli and the British Expeditionary Force on the Western Front aimed for too much—and both failed. To explain why, Crawley focuses on the operational level of war in the campaign, scrutinizing planning, command, mobility, fire support, interservice cooperation, and logistics. His work draws on unprecedented research into the files of military organizations across the United Kingdom and Australia.

The result is a view of the Gallipoli Campaign unique in its detail and scope, as well as in its conclusions—a book that looks past myth and distortion to the facts, and the truth, of what happened at this critical juncture in twentieth-century history.

Climax at Gallipoli: The Failure of the August Offensive (Campaigns and Commanders Series), by Rhys Crawley

Review “Rhys Crawley takes a revisionist sledgehammer to one of the remaining myths of the Gallipoli campaign: that the Allies could have won the Suvla offensive of August 1915. In a series of carefully constructed chapters he demonstrates that the operation’s failure was a function of structure rather than circumstance. Not only was the plan too ambitious, but it placed far too much faith in the possibilities of maneuver in an age of industrialized positional warfare. The result was all too typical of the Great War—an aggregation of sacrifices as futile as they were heroic.”—Dennis Showalter, author of Hitler’s Panzers: The Lightning Attacks that Revolutionized Warfare“Rhys Crawley’s rigorous examination of the August offensives at Gallipoli—in particular the artillery and logistic support required for a successful attack—deepens our understanding of why the First World War was so expensive in casualties, while the front lines seemed to move hardly at all. This book is highly recommended for all those interested in the Gallipoli campaign and in the operations of the First World War as a whole.”—Robert O'Neill, author of The German Army and the Nazi Party, 1933–1939

About the Author Rhys Crawley is a historian with the Strategic and Defence Studies Centre at the Australian National University. He received his doctorate from the University of New South Wales at the Australian Defence Force Academy.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. A thorough examination of the August Offensive at Gallipoli By Marcus Fielding The story of Australia’s part in the Gallipoli Campaign has become a central part of our national story and identity. On the eve of the campaign’s centenary it is a story that runs the risk of becoming more mythical in nature. Thank goodness, then, for Climax at Gallipoli which might put some objective balance back into the Anzac Centenary proceedings.Climax at Gallipoli examines the performance of the Allies’ Mediterranean Expeditionary Force (MEF) in the August Offensive of the Gallipoli Campaign. Crawley’s examination of the Campaign is rigorous, dispassionate and timely. His key message is that the August Offensive was flawed from the outset and destined to fail.Dr Rhys Crawley is a historian with the Strategic and Defence Studies Centre at the Australian National University. He has received several research scholarships and given talks on aspects of his research on the Gallipoli campaign at the University of Birmingham, the Imperial War Museum, the Australian War Memorial and the Istanbul Medeniyet University.Crawley reminds us that in 1915, the second year of the war, the Allies were still adapting to a new form of warfare, with static defence replacing the manoeuvre and offensive strategies of earlier British doctrine. In the attempt both the MEF at Gallipoli and the British Expeditionary Force on the Western Front aimed for too much and the result was all too typical of the Great War - an aggregation of sacrifices as futile as they were heroic. To explain why, he examines in detail the operational level of war in the Campaign, critically scrutinizing planning, command, mobility, fire support, inter-service cooperation, and logistics. Crawley links these elements into a military ‘system’ and his work draws on unprecedented research in the UK and Australia.Crawly is critical of the nationalistic rhetoric associated with the Gallipoli Campaign in general and the August Offensive in particular. “Gallipoli has gone down in history as something that was on the brink of succeeding,” says Crawley. “Victory was assured, the story goes, ‘if only’ the Allies had pushed a little harder, or had been the recipients of some simple good luck. “But when we take a step back, and view it as a case study in the how and why of 1915 warfare, we see a very different picture. It was not unlike what happened on the Western Front. “This was a new kind of war, and all armies were struggling to figure out how to adapt and defeat their enemy. It was years before the technology and tactics advanced to a stage where victory was possible.”The Gallipoli Campaign has also been portrayed as one in which the British foolishly sent Anzac soldiers to their death, resulting in the loss of about 8,700 Australians, and 2,700 New Zealanders. This is a popular misconception that Crawley also disputes. “Contrary to what many believe to be the case, the British officers in charge of the campaign were not bumbling fools who joyfully sent men to their death in ill-conceived plans,” he says. “Rather, they were experienced men who had an intimate knowledge of their profession. “The popular narrative forgets that the British lost many more troops at Gallipoli with around 34,000 killed throughout the campaign.”Crawley also reminds us that Gallipoli is not just a story about the Anzacs. “The Anzacs were a relatively small component of the Allied army of Indian, French, and British troops that landed on the Gallipoli Peninsula. Their role deserves to be part of our national narrative, as does their sacrifice,” he said. “By talking of the Anzacs at the expense of all others, we have afforded ordinary Australian volunteers, of all ages and walks of life, superman status. We have blown their actions and achievements out of all proportion, and have developed a national history of Gallipoli that is devoid of historical context.”Climax at Gallipoli is highly recommended for all those interested in the Gallipoli Campaign and in the operations of the First World War as a whole. The price may put off casual readers, but at the same time reflects the high academic standard of his research and prose. Crawley should be commended for producing an objective account of the August Offensive based on primary source material, but sadly I fear it will become more a reference book for further research than a popular bestseller.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A realistic appraisal of Gallipoli that cuts through the "might have beens" of its retellings.Highly recommended. By Jason M. Pilalas Much revisionist history is simply an offbeat interpretation to provoke a controversy and/or sell some books. The is the exception which shows what a dispassionate and analytical appraisal can accomplish. The author makes his points by piling his facts in a logical progression which shows the campaign, and particularly the August reinforcement and Suvla Bay landings, had very little chance of success from its outset. Like so many of the Allied offensives of World War I, especially early on, it was full of poor planning and a fundamental misappreciation of defensive firepower. Laid bare are the reasons the U.S. Marines for many years used the Gallipoli campaign as the prime example of how not to conduct amphibious warfare in the schooling that was basis for their victories in World War II.

How do you decide what is worth fighting for? What – or who – would you be willing to sacrifice? "I promise to protect you always." They crept in under cover of darkness. With the palace under enemy control, Persephone, Princess of Galilae, will do anything necessary to protect those she holds dearest. But when loyalties conflict and not everyone can be saved, what will it cost to keep her promise? "Tell me about Princess Persephone." Undefeated, merciless, and famed as a brilliant strategist, for Augustine Sempronius the ends have always justified the means. When the palace fell with hardly any resistance, overtaking the rest of Galilae should have been simple. But the one person his plans hinge on is also the one person cunning and ruthless enough to thwart him.

By Kerri Gaither Hands Across the Sky is the perfect way to journey around the world while at the same time delving into the depths of political, cultural, social and interpersonal intrigue. With just the right balance of mystery, romance and adventure, the chapters call to you every time you set it down.I think it is perfect for any travel fanatic, history buff or language lover. As you journey along with Ezra you get to learn about different cultures, customs and even a bit of Arabic. This tale moves along at a great pace and still leaves room for you to absorb a bustling world of Egyptian culture. The story and the scenery will both reverberate in your mind again and again long after you turn the final page.

Reads like a well-written Dan Brown novel By Ferol Hands Across the Sky combines the lyrical prose of a well-written literary novel with the suspense of an international espionage mystery.Timely in both its setting and content, Hands Across the Sky delves into the complexity of a post-Arab Spring / ISIS-on-the-rise world, as seen through the eyes of Ezra Quinn, a young tech engineer plucked from his top-secret job in Silicon Valley. His adventure in the Middle East is illuminating, thrilling and at times, heart-breaking.I read this book in one sitting, and kept coming back to it in my mind's eye for days after.

Spanning a century from the introduction of electric light to the dawn of the Space Age, this first major survey of American night scenes by artists such as Winslow Homer, Georgia O'Keeffe, Andrew Wyeth, and Joseph Cornell proposes the central importance of nocturnal images in the development of modern art. This gorgeously illustrated book investigates how leadingAmerican artists of diverse aesthetic convictions respondedin a range of media--including paintings, drawings, prints, andphotographs--to the unique challenges of picturing the night.Retooling their palette and reconsidering their techniques, artists cherished the night as a time of heightened alertnessand active imagination. Mysterious and provocative, thedarkness was experienced as liberating, both on an aestheticand personal level--allowing artists to become invisible, turninward, and express personal truths in unique and poetic ways.Night Vision expands the conversation on American art and therise of modernism, as it demonstrates how the theme of thenight inspired artists who sought to leave behind establishedstyles and traditions to better reflect the broader societal andtechnological shifts as well as a new understanding of the valueof art as personal expression.

Review "This book, with more than 100 illustrations, showcases night scenes by artists such as Winslow Homer, Edward Hopper, Andrew Wyeth, and Georgia O'Keeffe . . . The images range from realist to abstract, from urban portraits of the night to ominous, crepuscular, and often voyeuristic nocturnes in a wide variety of mediums . . . Bolstered by reflective essays, Night Vision is a survey of modernism and of personal expression, illuminating the powerful, lasting impact night vision had on American art."—Boston Globe
