It is Spring 2001, and Casey Frye, a young, small-town police officer, who is engaged to be married, has just discovered that he has testicular cancer. His doctor, however, thinks he is a perfect candidate for a new experimental procedure--a testicular transplant. The key is the donor--the most likely match being his father. That is, until his mother drops the bomb that the man that Casey and everyone else thought was his dad was not his biological father. There had been a brief, tempestuous affair, and all she can offer Casey is his true father's name. When Casey goes searching for the stranger whom he will try to talk out of one of his testicles, he discovers that he is searching for a man with more secrets than Casey may have time to unravel. From the bikinied beaches of Key West to the lights of Broadway, BALL(s) is a classic tale of self-discovery with both outrageously funny and darkly sinister twists and turns through the backstreets of sex, lies, and crime scene tapes. It is "identity" and "crisis" as the two words have never played together before.

Once you arrive, you're amazed to find that each guest is both fun and fascinating, and that you never ever want to leave.Such is the shindig author Lew Holton is throwing and the venue is his very, very funny novel, BALL(S).Casey Frye is the book's protagonist, or perhaps more accurately, our guide through this labyrinth of lovably strange characters and mind-blowing happenstances. Think Ebenezer Scrooge visited by the Addams family on unicycles. The funniest entourage of rogues and scoundrels--every age and every gender--this side of GREATER TUNA.Is BALL(S) irreverent, perhaps even imprudent? Of course it is. But that's part of the appeal. Do not make the mistake of thinking that testicular cancer, tragedy that it may be, cannot also be downright hilarious.

The lords of a dying planet launch Piyat, a terrified "volunteer," on a voyage across the universe. She lands in Cold War America, where fear is pushing people to extremes. The Army captures her, and the CIA steals her away. She falls into the hands of a depressed ex-operative, a psychiatrist with a lust for pharmacology, and an Agency golden boy gone wrong. They turn her into the centerpiece of an MKUltra-style program to test mind-control drugs. Through it all, Piyat tests the definition of what is "human" and what is "alien."

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. I'm In Love--With an Alien By Joyce Richardson I fell from the depths of the universe and landed in a nest of spies--PiyatPiyat, Martia, Duck, Doug, Alice: whatever he/she calls itself, whatever others call him or her, changes names as adroitly as she changes colors. What emerges is the most loveable creature from another planet since E.T.Piyat is the alien from the planet Utorb who lives and works in the CIA archives of The Mines. A humanist, a poet, an irresistible being who will both break your heart and give you heart, Doug (a name given to him by humans) is just as high on scented bubble baths as she is on alcohol and drugs. It has not always been this way. Tracing the sad and perilous journey of Piyat from his used-up planet--drawn in exquisite detail--to Earth: befriended by a family, abused by the army, kidnapped by a befuddled CIA and eventually becoming an experimental drug subject, former CIA analyst, Susan Hasler, brings her characters to full-blown life with a deftness I last experienced in her original CIA novel, Intelligence. While the riveting stories of the humans involved in Halfsheep: specifically Lloyd, Avery, and the woman psychiatrist, Lee, are brilliant and right-on, nothing compares to the poetic and insightful intelligence of the alien, Piyat. This novel will tickle your funny bone, blow your mind, and make you high as it knocks down all your suppositions about everything.Well done, Susan Hasler!Joyce Richardson

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. An excellent read: A novel that will make you think By Mike Billington Fictional aliens have visited Earth many times in the past. Some have been friendly, others terrifying but none - even E.T. - have been as "human" as Piyat, the unwilling female volunteer shot to Earth from a dying planet in author Susan Hasler's excellent "Project HALFSHEEP: Or How the Agency's Alien Got High."I found this to be a wonderful book on many levels. It is, for example, beautifully written. Hasler has a real command of the language and her talents are on full display in this novel of life in the United States in the years following World War II. Her descriptions of people, of places and of events are spot on and they rope the reader into her narrative. And what a narrative it is: Full of all the paranoia that marked America in the Age of McCarthy and other right-wing demagogues who cynically used the "Red Scare" to win elections and Constitutional concessions from the people they were allegedly trying to protect. Their paranoia allows them to treat Piyat with disdain and a total lack of humanity. They imprison her, experiment on her and treat her roughly; utterly failing to realize that she is more intelligent than they are by a long measure. Her treatment because she is alien closely parallels the treatment of Trudie, the woman who first recognizes that Piyat is special in a way the buttoned-down, fear-driven men around her do not. Like Piyat, Trudie is also imprisoned: Her cell is a loveless marriage to a cruel man who controls her life and her property.Perhaps that's why she and Piyat bond so quickly? In any event, Hasler's dual story lines give her the opportunity to make some very sharp observations about the status of women during the Fifties and the present. In addition, Hasler - who spent more than two decades working for the CIA - casts a knowing eye on the workings of it and other "intelligence" agencies back in the day when it was often considered disloyal to voice any criticism of the government and its workings. It was a time when even newspaper reporters and editors took quiet payoffs from the CIA and other agencies for privately informing on co-workers and people they came into contact with: A terrible time in American history despite the Herculean efforts of television and the film industry to paint it as idyllic. Hasler's descriptions of the self-righteous men who ran the country's spy agencies in those dark days perfectly captures, in my opinion, their lack of respect for women, their recklessness, their paranoia and their almost complete perversion of the American ideal. This is an excellent novel that will sometimes make you smile, sometimes make you laugh, and sometimes make you wonder why we Americans are always so ready to judge on appearances alone. In short, it is a novel that will make you think.I highly recommend it.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. An insightful satire By Winifred This is a complex novel to describe or review. There’s a lot of humor. Since the alien learned English from Webster’s dictionary, her word choice is an ongoing source of humor. She says she “misplaced my consciousness” and got in a “feces load of trouble.” Her observations of humanity are also amusing as well as right on.“The humans think if they chop him [time] small and give him a ticking sound, if they strap him to their wrists, they can understand time, but it’s not so. He is not nor ever will be effable. Nor is he killable, no matter how they talk about killing him.”Another favorite alien observation: “Arguing made humans stupider.”Basically, all the sections narrated by the alien are great, funny and perceptive, from the moment she accidentally volunteers for this mission because she’s daydreaming about genetically coloring her flocculent butt hot pink to the end where she’s switching labels on the boxes in the archives for fun. She arrives on earth shortly after WWII when the cold war was just developing and the CIA was formed. She’s captured by the army and then later taken by the CIA, so the book is filled with satire about army stupidity and the pursuit and abuse of power in government agencies. The CIA’s experiments with psychoactive drugs on unwitting subjects is treated satirically too since the alien as well as the psychiatrist become rather fond of LSD and weed. But much of the book is also told in third person by a large cast of characters, each one fully developed with a back story and internal and external conflicts. A lot of these people are victims of domestic abuse. The subjugation of women is an ongoing theme. When the book leaves the alien and follows these other people, its tone changes. There isn’t much humor and often the pacing slows. I began to wonder if Hasler was trying to fit too much into one book, or if it might be sharpened by a little cutting. Or maybe she does successfully weave together the paranoia of the cold war, the brutality of interrogations, the abuses of government power, the suppression of women, and the horrific insensitivity of some scientists to their subjects.Regardless, I was enthralled all the way to the end and would recommend Project HALFSHEEP for its complexity, its wit, its insights, its delightful alien, and its skewering of the CIA.

Could you go out onto a snowy rooftop to confront a would-be jumper? What might you experience if you were trapped inside a tornado? How long could you keep a huge secret from your concert-hall fans? How would you choose between two irreconcilable talents? What would you do if you suspected something about yourself which would demolish your career? How would you deal with startling childhood memories emerging after decades of being repressed? HOAR FROST is an anthology of seven dramatic and entertaining stories dealing with the loss of faith, the end of traditions, impossible choices, lives changed in unusual ways: "Windfall" - A grieving widower, visiting his wife’s grave in a rural Midwest cemetery, is snatched up by a tornado and carried not only into an aerial maelstrom but into a new awareness. Set in (and above!) Iowa. “Rise Up Singing" - A spectacular young opera singer on a national tour with Gershwin's “Porgy and Bess" and already well on her way to major stardom, has to deal with a life-altering secret. Set in Charleston and other locations. “Shadow Boxing" - A piano teacher has a major dilemma: one of his teen-aged students shows enormous potential for achieving an international concert career. But the boy's father is pushing him into amateur boxing. Should the teacher try to convince his prodigy that boxing could ruin his chances of success as a concert pianist? Set in Victoria, B.C. “Where Morning Lies" - After a plane crash kills her bush pilot boyfriend, an Alaskan woman has settled into a quiet and satisfying life as a clock repair expert and is happily occupying her free time with quilting, gardening, and writing poetry. But into her well-ordered life comes the unexpected-a young biologist who knocks everything off-balance. Set in Southcentral Alaska. “Flood Gates" - A top cardiovascular surgeon makes a diagnosis that he desperately hopes is incorrect even though he prides himself in always being right. At the same time his wife struggles to overcome fears about the geothermal systems underneath their historic home. On one dramatic day, their stories converge. Set in Boise, Idaho. “Hoar Frost" - In the title story, an Alaskan minister whose marriage is in trouble, faces a more universal issue: he thinks he’s losing his faith, On what’s normally his day off, he’s severely put to the test. Set in Anchorage. “Shearwater Rising" - On an exclusive small-ship tour to the Galapagos Islands, a renowned tapestry weaver has three main goals: to find new inspiration for her work, to reconnect with her childhood, and to try to reestablish trust within her marriage. Set in the Galapagos Islands. Filled with unusual juxtapositions and remarkable characters, the diverse stories of HOAR FROST touch on important themes-including grief, love, mortality, faith and memory. Eric Wallace's distinctive voice is sometimes lyrical, sometimes ironic, sometimes quietly-humorous. And always engaging.

HOAR FROST, by Eric E. Wallace

From the Inside Flap Sooner or later, doubt comes to each of us. Doubt can paralyze us--sometimes for keeps. Or doubt can make us stop and reflect. Eventually, it might even propel us in amazing new directions. If we're lucky.   The trail passed through a windbreak of shrubs and dead grasses, and Barr stopped, stamping his feet. Snow had blown into the branches, forming odd little clumps, shapes which looked to him like elephants, ice cream cones, a bearded Moses. One crisp, glittering limb reminded Barr of this morning's hoar frost, which he'd observed but knew he'd not fully appreciated. The remembered beauty of those ice crystals hit him now. He was struck by the intensity of the cold needed to form them. He shivered. The shiver turned into a tremble. When he closed his eyes, he saw a malicious frost growing inside his heart, limning blood red with icy white. Sharp pinnacles of isolation, shining splinters of separation, crystalline tendrils of doubt were forming frozen barriers, a chain mail of ice. Barr felt tears freezing on his cheeks. His throat, fiercely-dry, constricted. Conviction. Connectedness. Focus. He needed all of them. But they were sliding away from him, as a mountain climber, his ropes unravelling strand by strand, slides into a crevasse. And Barr felt his faith surely was sliding with them.    from "Hoar Frost", one of the seven absorbing stories in this new anthology

From the Back Cover HOAR FROST   Stories by Eric E. Wallace    You're a respected Alaskan minister.  The police want you to climb out onto a snowy rooftop,19 floors up, to talk down a would-be jumper. What the police don't know is that this is among the worst days of your life, that you have begun to doubt your calling, your faith.   In this diverse anthology, meet that minister and:

  • a grieving widower sucked into a tornado
  • a rising opera star with a life-changing secret
  • a retired teacher fretting about what lurks beneath her historic home
  • a clock repairer whose perfectly-ordered life is knocked off balance by a book club meeting
  • a tapestry artist seeking inspiration in the Galapagos Islands and finding much more
  • a 15 year old piano prodigy torn between the keyboard and the boxing ring

Wallace, I eagerly anticipated his next creation. I was not disappointed. His new anthology is another winner. This book has fewer, and some much longer stories, allowing other elements of Wallace's talent to shine through. Each story has a succinct title that somehow manages to capture the soul of the story in one or very few words. The metaphoric counterpoints, one of his story-telling tools, are fascinating and serve well to bring every story into full brilliance and meaning for the reader. He begins with "Windfall" which metaphors the process of deep grief and pain with the chaos and nightmare of a tornado hit. What else could more aptly describe what it feels like to have the one you love most quite literally "ripped" out of your life? In his majestic poetic words and images, and yes, even with some of his ubiquitous humor thrown in, Wallace depicts the healing that is possible in such grievous circumstances."Floodgates" is equally powerful in the counterpoint it presents. This story portrays Wallace's complete mastery in writing exquisite short stories, every word filled with meaning. One of my favorites is "Where Morning Lies", the story of finding the true love at the heart of our lives. It moves at a slow place, tick-tocking along with the timepieces that the heroine meticulously repairs, giving the reader plenty of time to breathe in and appreciate the wonder of all that transpires. The beauties of nature are such an integral part of Wallace's creations. His vivid descriptions easily bring them forth in the reader's imagination. Nowhere is this more evident than in his longest story, "Shearwater Rising". It takes place in the Galapagos Islands where Darwin's evolutionary theory originated. The evolution of a marriage is the counterpoint as we find ourselves literally sauntering among some of the most amazing creatures in the world that we can almost see and feel beside us as we read.Give yourself a wonderful treat, and pick up a copy of "Hoar Frost". Light the fire, curl up on the couch wrapped in a warm blanket, and sip a cup of hot tea or cocoa, or your own favorite beverage, and slowly savor Wallace's scintillating stories. You won't be disappointed. And watch out for those blue-footed boobies at your feet!

They plumb the depths of human emotion, seething below the mundane surface of appearances. He weaves a tapestry of narrative from gossamer threads of psychology, morality, humanism and philosophy, all churning in the crucible of human suffering. These are truly marvels of storytelling.

Every Big and Little Wish, E.C. Moore’s young adult novel, opens in late spring 1970. Sixteen-year-old Jacy Wilbert’s Mom got promoted, so her parents sold their Victorian home in California and moved to a townhouse in Oregon. Torn away from the only home she's ever known and forced to leave her beloved German shepherd behind, Jacy now feels misplaced. Exacerbating an already terrible situation, her dad runs off with the bombshell real estate agent who sold them their townhouse. And, just when it seems things can’t get any worse, her mom loses the stupid job they left California for in the first place. As her mother drowns her sorrows with pink wine night after night, Jacy’s caught in the middle, struggling to maintain a relationship with her AWOL dad while tolerating his annoying, much-younger girlfriend. Missing old friends back in California, and feeling like an outsider, Jacy needs to build a new social life in a new school. Not the sort of girl to wait around for what she wants to come her way, she sets her sights on Neil Wilder, the best-looking boy around. Everything changes when Jacy Wilbert knocks on the wrong door.

No cell phones, no computers, just real relationships. E. C. Moore captured what it was like to be a teenager at that time perfectly. The characters are rich and full and quirky. The story pulls you along and you don't want to put it down. It is not only a teen story, but a really good mystery and suspenseful. I highly recommend this book to anyone who just wants to get lost in a good story.

By Dana Busenbark What is Jacy to do when she's uprooted from the only home she's known, moved to a much smaller place in another state, then her father runs off with the woman that sold them the new house? What happens with her mom? Enter Neil Wilder, the new kid on the block. A non-liked girl sits down next to Jacy on the bus one day and points down Neil's run down house. Jacy decides that she is going to try to befriend him, what does she do? What happens when Jacy goes out to eat pizza with her mom and a girl from school asks why she was hanging out with Nick? What happens with her mom? What is the nickname that Jacy calls her mother in her thoughts? What happens when Neil and Jacy are walking out of school one day and his brother shows up in his Uncle's truck? What's going on at the house? How does the issue get resolved? What happens to little Manny when Neil and Jacy are forced to take Casper with him and he makes an unwanted move against Jacy? What happens to Jacy and Cay the night Jacy's mother decides to stay in Astoria with her new boyfriend? What does Jacy's Dad do? This book was really a shocking book at all the dysfunction that you see, but at the same time, it makes you pause and go, "hmmm." There are definitely intricacies in this book that I haven't noticed in other books that I have read, from the crazy, stalking brother who thinks he's a comic book character, to not knowing if Kai, the hawaiian body surfing girl in California is a liar or telling the truth to the stripper and Neil's family and Jacy's own family. How does the relationship between Jacy and Cay change as the story goes? What happens when after Jacy's father gets her a car, she comes back to the car while on a date with Neil and finds her door unlocked? Does she get into the car anyways or does she call the cops after everything that has been going on? You're going to have to read the book to find out everything that has been going on! WHEW!RECEIVED THIS BOOK AS A GIFT FOR A FAIR/HONEST REVIEW and REVIEWER FOR Bloggin' With M.Brennan.

A book about a gawky teenage girl set in the 70’s is like heaven to a fan of Judy Blume’s YA books.I have to say that this book did not disappoint me. I fell in love with Jacy and was eager to know where her life would take her. I did feel mostly bad for her as she seemed to have a lot of bad luck but not like she would never have good luck. I was a little sad at the end because although everything turned out okay, it was not the way I was hoping it to go. I really enjoyed reading about the Pacific Coast; the author did an excellent job describing all of the scenery, so much so that I want to go now!I do think there are some weak points to the book. Without spoiling too much, very important parts involving some very stressful things are very briefly talked about and then barely mentioned again. Or we don’t really know the reason behind things, and the reason given seems kind of weak. I also felt like we meandered along a path through Jacy’s life without really having a plot, though I can’t say this honestly upset me that much. This is a clean YA book. There’s very little sex mentioned, and it’s mostly talked about in the third person. Jacy has very little intimate contact. As such, I feel like this would be good for a pretty wide age range. That also includes adults – the author writes to all ages. As I said before, it was a bit more grown up version of a Judy Blume classic, but with the 1970’s references to make you feel like you were there.I received the book mentioned above in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts are my own.

Love gets way more than a fighting chance in USA Today bestselling author Sidney Halston’s seductive MMA romances! Beginning with Against the Cage (“funny, steamy, scorching,” raves Toni Aleo) and continuing with Full Contact and Below the Belt, the Worth the Fight series features loyal, hard-edged mixed martial arts fighters and the women who fall for them. Now, packing heavy-duty desire into a super-lightweight package, the first three novels are together in one convenient eBook bundle.   Includes a sizzling preview of the new novel in the Worth the Fight series, Laid Out!   AGAINST THE CAGE   For Chrissy Martin, returning to her Florida hometown always seems to bring bad luck. Now a routine traffic stop has ended with her accidentally punching an officer . . . in a delicate place. But Jack Daniels knows how to take a hit. After all, when he’s not chasing reckless drivers, he’s kicking ass in the ring. So what takes his breath away isn’t the low blow, it’s the woman who dealt it: a gorgeous knockout with legs Jack wouldn’t mind being pinned under—who just so happens to be his best friend’s nerdy little sister, all grown up.   FULL CONTACT   When Jessica Cross decides to give her violently jealous boyfriend a second chance, she nearly becomes a statistic. After healing from a broken rib and collapsed lung, Jessica finally feels ready to come out of hiding. But will she ever be able to take a chance on love again? MMA fighter Slade Martin knows he has a bad reputation. Hell, he’s probably earned it. So it won’t be easy to convince beautiful, vulnerable Jessica that she can trust him—and that from the moment she walked into his life, she’s been the only one he’s wanted.   BELOW THE BELT   Once one of the most sought-after names on the MMA circuit, Antonio “Scarface” Marino watched his career go down for the count as he chased skirts and made tabloid headlines. Now he’s finally making a comeback, and it’s all thanks to Francesca Silva, a Brazilian bombshell as tough as any of her fighters. Francesca went to the mat to sign Tony because she believes he still has potential, if she can keep his head in the cage and out of her personal life. But soon Tony’s kisses are stirring up complicated feelings—especially when he agrees to face her ex in the ring.   Praise for the Worth the Fight series   “Against the Cage is funny, steamy, scorching—and holy hot MMA fighter, I wanted more! By Madhatt First off this is a ménage m/m/m so if that bothers you pass, but if you want a very sweet romance about love lost and found, betrayal and redemption then read on! Kole was abandoned by his mate Max five years ago, no reason why and no expectation he would ever return; he is still hurt and desperately sad and lonely. On his usual morning run he finds an injured Jasper and takes him home to access his injuries and make sure he is ok. Kole has an instant attraction to Jasper and thinks he may be a potential mate but the problem is Jasper is human and it is unlikely the pack will accept him. None the less love blossoms between Kole and Jasper and Kole marks him, happy after so long to belong to someone. Of course life is never easy and Max returns and is less than happy to find his mate with another, he picks a fight with Jasper but it only gets Kole upset, Max wants him back! Kole is torn and hurt, he still loves Max but he loves Jasper too, so what’s an Omega to do? Max realizes how badly he handled things and there was a good reason for leaving, but he should have explained to Kole instead of just leaving, he should have called, there are so many things he should have handled differently! He will do anything to get Kole back, even share if he has too. Jasper too is worried about losing Kole now that Max is back, but they reaffirm their mating bond and together decide to give Max a chance, the three spend time together and realize there is a growing bond between all of them. Max is forgiven and with the love of Jasper and Kole he heals from the wounds the last five years in the Army has left him with. This was a very sweet tale, the characters were absolutely lovable, so vulnerable at times and tough at others. Highly recommend!!

By Marie Brown Marie's Tempting Reads ARC Review:Omega's Heart, the 21st book in the Black Hills Wolves series, is some seriously sexy and yet, surprisingly sweet romance. This is a steamy m/m/m story that is heart-wrenching and beyond HOT at the same time. We get three good looking men making love, and just generally being sweet on one another as they travel this road of love together. We get some drama due to the fact Max walked out of Kole's life, but when he returns, he has to decide how to handle Kole and his new found mate. There is some struggle at first, but it doesn't take him, or his other two mates, to come together and love one another as they should.I loved all three of these characters. They each had something good to bring into their relationship that was essential and unique. I loved the danger, and the plot as well as the writing for Omega's Heart. TL Reeve weaves a sensual, dangerous and intriguing tale that will leave readers charged and squirming. I don't read a lot of m/m/m romances but thanks to Reeve, I may be checking out more books like this in the future.I give this a STUNNING FOUR AND A HALF SHOOTING STARS! I can't complain about anything with Omega's Heart and I am happy with the story and the outcome.

Antonio m/m/mIt isn’t often that after reading m/m/m werewolves the first thing I think is awww that was sweet but that was my ultimate reaction to Omega's Heart. Kole is the Omega in question. He has waited for 5 years for his unclaimed mate to return. Max just up and left with no word. Kole is determined to move on just as he finds the human Jasper injured in the forest. Jasper has mate potential. But what happens when Max returns?Omega's Heart is a great addition to the loosely connected Black Hills Wolves series. I love that the author gave Kole a spine that just because he was omega doesn’t mean he is a pushover. Can the other men in his life do what is best for him? There is hot sex, love and sacrifice that will leave you saying awww.

Though largely out of the public eye for more than a century, Gustave Caillebotte (1848–94) has come to be recognized as one of the most dynamic and original artists of the impressionist movement in Paris. His paintings are favorites of museum-goers, and recent restoration of his work has revealed more color, texture, and detail than was visible before while heightening interest in all of Caillebotte’s artwork. This lush companion volume to the National Gallery of Art’s major new exhibition, coorganized with the Kimbell Art Museum, explores the power and technical brilliance of his oeuvre. The book features fifty of Caillebotte’s strongest paintings, including post-conservation images of Paris Street; Rainy Day, along with The Floorscrapers and Pont de l’Europe, all of which date from a particularly fertile period between 1875 and 1882. The artist was criticized at the time for being too realistic and not impressionistic enough, but he was a pioneer in adopting the angled perspective of a modern camera to compose his scenes. Caillebotte’s skill and originality are evident even in the book’s reproductions, and the essays offer critical insights into his inspiration and subjects. This sumptuously illustrated publication makes clear why Caillebotte is among the most intriguing artists of nineteenth-century France, and it deepens our understanding of the history of impressionism.

Gustave Caillebotte: The Painter's Eye, by Mary Morton, George Shackelford

Review “A well-upholstered fauteuil of a book that readers can settle into. . . . Caillebotte is fascinating precisely because his style seemed, to his contemporaries, to be not style at all. It was ‘photographic’—not a term of praise in the 1870s, but a fundamental one for art a century on.” (Bookforum)“Gustave Caillebotte: The Painter’s Eye is the richly illustrated and impressively researched catalogue of an exhibition shown at the National Gallery of Art, Washington, and the Kimbell Art Museum, Fort Worth, TX.  Curators Mary Morton and George Shackelford establish once and for all the pivotal significance of Caillebotte’s often overlooked or downplayed paintings. The exhibition focused on the work Caillebotte showed with the Impressionists, dating from 1875 to the early 1880s. The catalogue demonstrates that although he was a friend of all the Impressionists, Caillebotte was closest to Edgar Degas in style and focus. Essays by the curators and other art historians spell out the rich intellectual, literary, cultural, and artistic contexts in which Caillebotte oriented himself in late-19th-century France.  Caillebotte, readers learn, was a keen observer of urban and suburban modernity. He rendered on canvas the psychological complexity of a French middle-class man’s experience of the new spaces and perspectives modern life afforded. Recommended.”   (Choice)

About the Author Mary Morton is curator and head of the Department of French Paintings at the National Gallery of Art. George Shackelford is senior deputy director at the Kimbell Art Museum in Fort Worth, Texas.

Caillebotte's "Impressionist" Years By Kenneth Hughes This volume is the catalogue to accompany the exhibition of the same name at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., from June to October 2015 and then at the Kimbell Art Museum in Fort Worth, Texas, from November 2015 to February 2016. This is not the most comprehensive exhibition Caillebotte has had in the US (both the 1976 show organized by Kirk Varnedoe for Houston and Brooklyn and the 1994 retrospective in Paris, Chicago, and Los Angeles were larger), but in gathering fifty-seven canvases from the first half of the artist’s career, i.e., from around 1874 to the mid-1880’s, corresponding to the years of the Impressionist exhibitions, it has delineated more clearly than those previous shows what the curators call Caillebotte’s “Painter’s Eye,” i.e., the very individualistic and idiosyncratic vision that made his painting unlike that of any other artist of his generation and that created paintings of startling originality and striking modernity. John Rewald called Gustave Caillebotte a “timid” artist, and throughout all four editions of his groundbreaking and highly influential “History of Impressionism” steadfastly refused to see in him anything more than a kind of mini-Monet, a Sunday painter whose primary value to Impressionism was in paying Monet’s rent, buying up what Rewald considered otherwise “unsaleable” canvases of the “real” painters, helping to organize the exhibitions and generally bankrolling the movement. Given the information and the paintings that were available to Rewald by 1946, it is perhaps not hard to understand how he came to that opinion, for he seems to have seen mostly the landscape and nature studies from later in the artist’s life. But when one sees Caillebotte’s canvases of the Impressionist years, adjectives like “bold,” “daring,” and maybe even “fearless” suggest themselves; “timid” certainly does not come to mind. Neither, oddly, does “Impressionist,” and that may well have been Rewald’s sticking point, because only some of this work—and not the best at that—invites comparison with what we would generally consider an Impressionist style. Even though Renoir himself invited Caillebotte to join the second Impressionist exhibition in 1876, where he showed eight paintings, and though he continued to exhibit with the group, showing an additional fifty-nine paintings in four more exhibitions (missing only 1881 and the final one in 1886), and even though at times he was considered in the contemporary press to be the leader of the group, his paintings from these heyday years of Impressionism are visually distinct and quite divergent in theme, style, facture and just about every other way one can think of from “mainstream” Impressionism. Let’s give Rewald partial credit: maybe Caillebotte wasn’t a first-rate Impressionist painter after the scholar’s heart, but that doesn’t mean he was not a first-rate painter of another kind, and there was nothing “timid” about his art.The exhibition is curated and the catalogue edited by Mary Morton, head of the department of French painting at the National Gallery and George T. M. Shackelford, deputy director of the Kimbell. Their introduction points out some of the reasons why Caillebotte was so late to achieve the recognition that the other Impressionist painters enjoyed from the beginning. Chief among these is that since he did not need to earn money by selling his paintings, the vast majority of them were retained by the family after his death and still remain in private hands. (Even the Musée d’Orsay, which owns more of them than any other institution, has only four, compared to the dozens it has of each of his fellow Impressionists.) Combined with one part of the appended apparatus, an essay on his posthumous reputation from 1894 to 1994, there is some interesting observation on how an artistic reputation comes to be forged through strategic gallery sales, curatorial decisions, and other half-artistic/half-commercial factors. There are seven scholarly essays by academic and curatorial authorities, all clearly written and easily accessible. Some of the topics addressed are the artist’s “Deep Focus,” i.e., the extraordinary depth in some of his well-known paintings like “The Pont de l’Europe” (1876) and “Paris Street. Rainy Day” (1877), which the writer suggests is comparable to some early cinematic techniques; the surprisingly favorable way in which Caillebotte was viewed by much of the contemporary criticism, especially in comparison to the other painters; his interest in the furnishings of the bourgeois Parisian apartment as an indicator of social and interpersonal dysfunction; his rootedness in the realist tradition as transmitted to him through his teacher, Léon Bonnat (this is actually a short essay on Bonnat by the Orsay’s curator Stéphane Guégan); and the relationship of his paintings to contemporary photographic practice and techniques. In “Man in the Middle,” Dr. Shackelford himself makes a compelling argument that Caillebotte is best understood as occupying a middle ground between the two factions of Impressionism, i.e., between the painters of urban themes and modern life (like Degas) and the artists of atmosphere, landscape and light (Monet), and that his artistic evolution was from the former to the latter—unfortunately, as the writer concedes that Caillebotte was not a particularly inspired landscape painter and that in the second half of his short career, i.e., from the mid-1880’s to his early death in 1894, he made some fine paintings but “many more that are frankly rather ordinary” (16).The book itself is handsomely designed with an uncluttered layout and easily legible print, and it is profusely illustrated. The fifty-seven exhibition items are all reproduced full-page in the catalogue section, which is divided into several thematic areas (“View from the Window,” “Urban Interior,” “Observing the Nude,” etc.), each of which is introduced by a few pages of focussed discussion. The paintings are not individually commented on, but they all receive mention of some sort in the essays, which themselves have copious supportive illustrations including more of the artist’s paintings and some beautifully evocative photographs, some of these also printed full-page. The jacket text says there are 177 illustrations in all. One distinctive feature is the great number of detail studies, including over twenty-five full-bled pages, although I must say that it was not always clear to me why a particular detail was chosen for enlargement. Additional apparatus consists of a nicely illustrated “biographical chronology,” a good selected bibliography, an exhibition checklist with the requisite curatorial data, and an index of names and titles. There have not been very many Caillebotte exhibitions, which may be just as well; in their Introduction, the curators concede that out of a known oeuvre of around 500 paintings “only a fraction warrant the attention of a major exhibition” (16). But like the little girl with the little curl, when he was good, he was very, very good, and he is certainly very good in this exhibition and catalogue of his earlier work. Very warmly recommended to those interested in this period of French painting.

Never have reproductions been so clear, lifelike, and gorgeous. Good reproductions are borne from good photography, and unfortunately some of the photography in this book is absolutely abysmal. I went through the exhibition twice and compared the book to the paintings immediately after both trips. Some of the reproductions are fantastic (like the MFA's Bather or the Musee Dorsay's Floor Planers), but a number of them are absolutely abysmal and look like they were reproduced from film that was many generations down from the master--they look like the kind of muddy, dark, mushy images that I would expect to see in a mid-nineties budget book from Taschen or Dover. If I make another trip to the exhibition I'll do another comparison and update this review with some more notes about the reproductions of specific images. The layout is okay and only a few images are run through the gutter. If it weren't for the number of poor reproductions, I would've happily bought this book. As is, it's never going to find a home on my shelf--there are just too many crummy repros for me to justify paying $30 for it.

As documentation for the National Gallery of Art's new exhibition of Caillebotte's work, it's a decent enough production--text rather good, layout good, illustrations okay. I just wish the curators/authors could have gone beyond the boundaries and numbers in the show. To be sure, the reader will understand that the painter's perspectives were probably "trained" as well as instinctive from the documentation in the book, but more substance could have made it even better.Caillebotte wasn't as prolific as his contemporaries (Monet, Renoir, Signac, etc.), but there were plenty of interesting paintings (maybe secondary in the view of art historians) not included in this exhibition, and therefore, not in the accompanying book. The iconic works are for the most part included, but this man is so interesting as a collector, facilitator, patron, designer and artist, that I would have liked to have seen more of his own works and perhaps a good bit of what he chose to collect from his impressionist contemporaries.

Secretly being he knows he hired her but has no clue what she's really up to. Becky has a passion for books...a girl I can respect....and had a bookstore til some corporate came into the area and basically put her and other small shops, out of business. That corporate of course belongs to Connor. She thinks she sees a diff side to him as she works with him but still can't forget what his company did to her and so many others. This was a great feel good book and really sexy!!!!
