We know Aphrodite as the goddess of love and we know Pegasus is the winged horse By Jake Cook All over the world there are extraordinary stories—stories that once upon a time were believed to be true but are today limited to the sphere of myths and legends. The question remains, are those myths something that existed in the minds of our ancestors, or were they based on true events? It is true that most of those stories appear to the scientific world as fictitious products of vivid imaginations whose goals were purely to explain phenomena beyond their comprehension. The stories of Greek mythology have formed the basis for how we think of our ancient forefathers. We’ve heard the stories of Theseus and the Minotaur and how Pandora opened a box and cursed humanity with the evils of the world. We know Aphrodite as the goddess of love and we know Pegasus is the winged horse. That’s just scraping the surface of Greek mythology, and oftentimes, it’s a much darker and much more bizarre place that we’d ever think. This book is not organized to be a quick reference. It tells the main stories and characters as well as gives a brief section on the minor figures. For each section, the author explains where he is getting the material with a little editorial comment. Even if you are not really into mythology this would be and interesting book since it is part of history. After reading this book, it enhanced my love for mythology and I am now on a mythology binge, reading Homer's Odessey and Iliad. Jackson's book is a good one to use in teaching, but it must not be considered the final authority on any of the topics it addresses.

Not only are they cool to consider, they’ll also come in handy when you’re doing the crossword puzzle or playing Jeopardy! If you don’t have time to take a class, or read a big book, you can still learn a little about mythology by reading this handy ebook. The Greek gods were created by man to explain the world around them, act as a means of exploration, provide legitimacy and authority to ancient Greek aristocracy, and provide entertainment for the masses. The religion of the ancient Greeks did not have a single source of written scripture such as the Bible or the Qur'an. Furthermore, the ancient Greeks did not believe in absolute truth as practiced by modern faiths such as Christianity and Judaism. Generally, a Greek city-state would devote itself to a particular god or a set of gods, and depending on the location of the city-state, the characteristics of the gods could vary widely. What I like most about this book is that it is organized so that it is easy to read and understand. This is a great introduction to the Greek Myths and written in a style that makes it entertaining and not a chore to read. I was in awe through out my journey through the good, the bad, and the gore of the Greeks, with some Norse thrown in at the end. It's a great reference tool, and the stories are amazing in their own right. It covers everything and makes it easy to understand. Great buy.

If you love myth don't myth this one By Denniger Bolton I'm one of those readers that Roy Jackson, the author, talks about who as had a fascination for Greek gods and goddesses since I was a kid. Instead of playing cops & robbers or cowboys & Indians, my brother and I played Cronos & Zeus. I know a little weird. I was happy to see by reading this book that we were not far off the mark. Crosos was the leader of the Titans and Zeus was a son that Mrs. Crosos hid from him because he had the bad habit of eating his kids whole. It was the only way to get them out of the way since they were immortal. Jackson's book is full of stories of the gods, goddesses, plus primordial deities. It comprehensive and a pretty darn fun book.
