The Gospel of Nicodemusis an apocryphal gospel claimed to have been derived from an original Hebrew work written by Nicodemus, who appears in the Gospel of John as an associate of Jesus. The title The Gospel of Nicodemus is mediaeval in origin. The dates of its accreted sections are uncertain, but scholars agree in assigning the resulting work to the middle of the fourth century AD. The section about Pilate is an older text found in the Greek Acts of Peter and Paul and is a purported official document from Pontius Pilate (or composed from reports at the praetorium at Jerusalem) reporting events in Judea to Emperor Tiberius, and referring to the crucifixion of Jesus, as well as his miracles. The main body of the Gospel of Nicodemus is in two sections, with an appendix, Descensus ad Infernos—the Harrowing of Hell—and is found to be a later addition to some versions including Greek and Latin. The first (chapters i–xi) contains the trial of Jesus based upon Luke 23. In addition to the Greek and Latin witnesses of the first part, there are three other notable ancient versions including Syriac or Aramaic (also known as Hebrew in the 1st century), Armenian, and Coptic. The second part (xii–xvi) concerns the Resurrection. In it, Leucius and Charinus, the two souls raised from the dead after the Crucifixion, relate to the Sanhedrin the circumstances of the descent of Christ to Limbo. A literature of miracle-tale romance developed around a conflated "Leucius Charinus" as an author of further texts. The Harrowing of Hell episode depicts St Dismas accompanying Christ in Hell, and the deliverance of the righteous Old Testament patriarchs.

By Mathew Turner A beautiful collection of short stories which contains great depth and facilitates multiple readings to allow oneself to discover all the intricacies and subtleties in her work. With themes ranging from the pure elation of childhood innocence and joy which elicit true nostalgia to the heavy themes and choices one must make and confront as one gets older and a wide variety in between, the collection of stories can resonate with a diverse audience and connect to a plethora of personalities and interests. It requires a great amount of detail and an astute touch to be able to bring about so much depth in so few words and she does so masterfully. I am looking forward to future works she produces.

By batmandela Ms Nande's beautifully composed vignettes creep into your imagination like seeds, where they blossom into a rich forest of full-blown stories. She captures moments, snatches of memories, and turns them over gently with her delicate prose; she runs her fingers over them, tracing the edges of pain, grief and loss; then she twists them in the light, and they shimmer and sparkle with joy and delight.

Cursed Once More: The Sequel to With This Curse, by Amanda DeWees

Review "Victorian Gothic has a new Queen." --The Modest Verge book blog (5 star review)"Another exciting adventure for newlyweds Clara and Atticus... I loved 'Cursed Once More' just as much as the first book, 'With This Curse,' and, without a doubt, I would recommend both books." --Just Book Talk audiobook review (5 stars)

From the Author In With This Curse I introduced Clara Crofton, the fiercely self-sufficient seamstress whose bruised heart found a safe haven with Atticus Blackwood, the caring, perceptive twin of her long-lost love. Long after I wrote "The End," however, I continued to think about these two characters, who had become very dear to me, and to mull over what their future together would hold. What would their happy-ever-after look like? How would they work together, play together, solve problems together? And would Clara's origins ever come back to haunt her?   At last I gave in and decided to give this couple another book. In Cursed Once More we learn more about Clara's family and background, and we also see how marriage has changed her and Atticus. For Clara, it has smoothed away some of her brittle exterior, allowing the kindness in her nature to emerge. But has it given her the courage she needs to confront new challenges and unexpected threats to her newfound happiness?   If you enjoyed meeting Clara and Atticus in With This Curse, you'll be delighted by this opportunity to accompany them through new adventures. I loved spending more time in their company, and I hope you will too!

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Cursed Once More is a Must-Read for Gothic and Historical Fans Alike By Eclectic Reader I really enjoyed the sequel to "With this Curse." "Cursed Once More" continues the story of Clara and Atticus with an even more suspenseful plot and a spooky setting along with enough family secrets to keep you guessing who's good and who's bad. Upping the ante is Clara's pregnancy and a new curse that her baby might face. Atticus is at his heroic and irresistible best and Clara is a most plucky and intelligent heroine. Once again Amanda DeWees's characterization, plotting, and historical details are top notch. Highly recommended!

A Definite Must-Read By Caitlyn Do you ever have that phenomena when you don’t want a book to end, but you can’t read fast enough to get to the conclusion? Amanda DeWees’s Cursed Once More, sequel to Daphne-award–winning With This Curse, is such a book. I found myself having to put the book down at the end of a chapter to try and get some sleep, only to pick it up about 3 seconds later, because 4 seconds was far too long to find out what happened next.I of course wasn’t surprised. Her characters from With This Curse were so approachable, believable, and delightful both in themselves and in their interactions together that I knew I was in for a treat when I got my copy of Cursed. Clara and Atticus Blackwood, together again for the first time, compatriots in arms, a duo against the world! I dove into the first chapter eagerly and, very greedily, soon consumed the whole book in a matter of days. If I’d had the non-stop time to do it, I could have completed the book in a matter of hours. Talk about a page turner. You have odious in-laws, the fear of vampirism, crumbling manors, a possible murder, mysterious intentions, tender newly-weds, beautiful descriptions, hilarious and coy verbal sparring….I both laughed aloud and fought back tears as I read through the story, cheered for the heroes and hissed at the villain, and though I thought I could possibly see what was coming, could dread it and desire it on pins and needles, Ms. DeWees kept me curious and guessing until the very last page. Although you get to know her characters so well, you still can never tell what happens next. You simply have to read it and find out!

3 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Curses, foiled again! By OLT Amanda DeWees is my favorite 21st-century author of Victorian Gothic. My very favorite authors have always been Victoria Holt and Dorothy Eden but they are, of course, no longer writing and DeWees is a satisfactory substitute. I prefer the subdued, less lurid, less 'werewolfy', only lightly paranormal Gothic romance and that's what DeWees delivers in a smooth, easy writing style. This story is the sequel to With This Curse: A Novel of Victorian Romantic Suspense. There's enough catch-up in this one that you could read it as a standalone but you may understand the main characters better by reading both #1 and #2.Ordinarily in a traditional Victorian Gothic you have a poor, lonely, orphaned heroine set down in a gloomy, mysterious setting, with a gloomy, mysterious brooding hero who may or may not be trustworthy. Well, we got all that mistrust between H and h out of the way in the first book, so here the hero and heroine are very happily married with a relationship solid enough that there are no stupid relationship misunderstandings. The threats to the couple's happiness come from outside sources. When out of the blue Clara receives a letter from uncle and grandmother she has never met, with an invitation to visit them, she decides to accept, hoping to find out more about her family background and more about her deceased mother's early life. Although she feels resentment about their neglect when she and her mother were in dire straits, she still hopes they may give her some explanation of their actions. So she and husband Atticus (a truly lovely man) set out for the visit. They arrive at an appropriately creepy, gloomy estate full of strange and creepy people. Shortly into the visit there's a mysterious death and it's impossible to find anyone slightly worthy of trust. Atticus and Clara are surrounded by strangely behaved people not given to being forthcoming with any information. This has some truly suspenseful moments when someone we actually care about disappears and there are lots of secrets and lies that come out as the story progresses. It was great fun to read this, even though most of the characters, except for Atticus and Clara, were quite over-the-top.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Another outstanding conceptual book on Statistics By Paulo C. Rios Jr. The author has managed to produce another brilliant conceptual book on statistics that is helpful to anyone learning statistics or making a review. It is also a great complement to those learning from more conventional textbooks. There are many insights and the coverage is excellent, including topics often left to more advanced books such as non-linear regression. However, two remarks must be made. It is not only good for biostatistics, but for statistics in general. The second is a warning. This book is a shorter version of the outstanding book "Intuitive Biostatistics" by the same author with one completely new chapter added. It is a welcome addition because its price is 25% of the longer version. It also makes the author's excellent treatment available to a wider audience. But readers of the other book will likely not need this one.

In July 1866, three wagon trains of German immigrants from Wisconsin arrived at their new home on the North Fork of the Elkhorn River in northeastern Nebraska. The settlers intended to call the town Northfork, but in 1868, when the abbreviated Norfork was submitted to federal postal authorities, the government assumed the name was misspelled and changed it to Norfolk. Since the towns founding, the story of the community has been one of continuous growth that has led to a bountiful, thriving town. Norfolks hardworking people are generous, welcoming, and open to new ideas. Though it has changed with time, the unconquerable spirit of the city remains young and active. Images of Modern America: Norfolk is a photographic journey into the 21st century.

One of Montana’s and the West’s finest fiction writers, Matt Pavelich is an author of universal appeal. His earlier books, the collection of stories, Beasts of the Forest, Beasts of the Field, and the novels, Our Savage and The Other Shoe, have been acclaimed by both reviewers and fellow authors. Now, with the publication of Survivors Said, his best stories written over four decades, Pavelich reveals extraordinary range and penetrating vision. As the novelist Gish Jen, author of Typical American and The Love Wife, writes, “What writing! The stories in Survivors Said are of the young and the old, of people getting out and people getting by. . . . [A]ll of them are vintage Pavelich: sharp-sighted and phrased just so, they are singularly alert to the worlds in a word.” In praising Pavelich’s second novel , Daniel Woodrell, author of Winter’s Bone, wrote, “Matt Pavelich is a native Montanan, he knows that world inside and out, and The Other Shoe is rich with details that convince, insights that amaze. His prose is among the most impressive now being written, elegant, nuanced, rough when needed, the high and low of language. The Other Shoe, is a brilliant novel of crime, love, and the American West, and it deserves a wide readership.” The late Evan S. Connell, bestselling author of Son of the Morning Star and Mrs. Bridge, called Pavelich’s first novel Our Savage “an extraordinary book, more Continental than American. . . . I don’t know anything like it in our literature. . . . Matt Pavelich is uncommonly vital and original.” Writing in the Washington Post, Lizzie Skurnick wrote: “Some authors can master domestic scenes, and others are successful at handling sweeping, historical tableaux, but Pavelich is the rare writer who can skillfully combine the two.” In an interview in Narrative Magazine, Jack Shoemaker, Pavelich’s publisher for both novels, even claimed: “We published what is in my opinion the best novel to come out of the West since Ken Kesey’s Sometimes a Great Notion—a book called Our Savage by Matt Pavelich.” Matt Pavelich makes his home in Hot Springs, Montana.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Terrific Collection By Andrew Matt Pavelich gives us the funny, the outrageous, the poignant, the bleak, the comfortable, and the inane. Pavelich shows us in Survivors Said that his range is beyond broad and yet he nails it every time. Every character I met became, in a way, an aspect of myself. I was moved to laughter and I was moved to tears, and by the last page, I was moved to wonder how on Earth I had not heard of Matt Pavelich before. The stories that I drew little stars next to in the Table of Contents because they were so good: My Distant Youth / Himself, Adrift / Out on a Fire / Danine or not Danine / Gray Kitty.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Some of the best short stories I've read in a long time By Russell Rowland I think Matt Pavelich is writing some of the best short fiction in Montana right now. I'm always so impressed with writers who master this genre, as it's one with which I have always struggled. The balance between craft and heart is no more difficult in a ten of fifteen page story than in a longer work, and Matt has a natural feel for the process. His story Himself, Adrift is one of the best stories I've read in a very long time. Every single story in this collection made me want to read slowly and savor every word.

The Conversion Prophecy, by Michael Solomon

Review A potentially real life horror story with a twist. The prologue of this international mystery thriller piqued my curiosity: Why the intriguing musings on Genesis chapter one? Also, why a picture of Samson and Delilah as a frontispiece? Excellent reasons appear as the story develops. In chapter one the opening sentence grabbed me. I was held captive throughout the narrative, to the last startling sentence of the epilogue. With articulate, swift strokes the author superbly carves out each scene that surrounds his characters. For the main characters he builds their persona each time they reenter the plot, with just enough new information to add more suspense. After reading "About the Author" at the very end of the book I see that Michael Solomon's descriptions of global societies and heads of States could have come from his pre-author experiences as well as from diligent research. This book reveals a frighteningly possible alternate lifestyle for the USA and for the world--with a surprising resolution! --Book Buzz"Death came swiftly and unexpectedly." In the Pantheon of literary genres, international thrillers have their own wing. There, encased in sepulchers with headstones writ large, stand names such as Robert Ludlum, John le Carré, Alistair MacLean and more. Their stories cross continents and languages to snare readers in compelling tales of intrigue. In the world s they create, knowledge is power, and treachery always lurks within treaties between nations and often within promises between friends Now, former New York City Police Officer, Michael Solomon, has turned his experienced ear for criminality, corruption, and conspiracies, to the world of high-flying deception in his debut novel, The Conversion Prophecy. Not the least bit intimidated by the renowned authors that have come before him, he confidently stakes his own claim to the genre with a globe-hopping tale of multinational mystery and suspense. It all begins in the year 2024. World peace has virtually been achieved. Violent terrorism is a thing of the past. Countries no longer settle their differences with armies and armaments. Corporations actually cooperate rather than compete. Consumers like and believe in the companies they buy from. Citizens collectively trust their elected officials. The stock markets of the world are at record highs. Has utopia finally been achieved? Or does a somewhat closer look reveal that perhaps nothing is as it seems. Solomon s story hits the tarmac running. With staccato prose, free of any cloying sentimentality that might slow the pace, he whisks us through the untimely death of the Vice President of the United States. Then he flashes readers back to an Indonesian Mosque years earlier, where clandestine plans are put in place by fanatical conspirators to take advantage of just such an opening in the highest echelons of American government. The author uses this shifting time technique to adroitly move multiple flesh and blood pawns across a vast transnational chessboard. But a lot more than a game is going on here, the results of which could be cataclysmic. The players on Solomon s continually changing battlefield include Secret Service Agents under the gun, career politicians with much to gain and more to lose, world leaders held hostage to a diabolical scheme, devout Moslems and devoted Jews, young men thrust into older men s hatreds, plus an appropriate smattering of stone cold spies. Revealing too much of the plot would deprive you of much of the fun inherent in peeling back one layer after another of Solomon s fast-moving tale of assassination, infiltration, and the potential annihilation of the world as we know it. Suffice it to say that readers will be jetted to exotic locales, ensconced in expensive hotels, piped aboard luxurious yachts, and fêted with the finest food and wine. There will also be initiations into secret societies, closed-door meetings with the CIA and the Israeli Mossad, and financial maneuvering that brings the world to the brink of collapse. If you re the type who can pack your willing suspension of disbelief along with your appetite for adventure, then you ll likely find The Conversion Prophesy a whirlwind excursion you won t want to miss. --US Review of BooksImagine the world, where everything from energy and communication to food and water supplies is controlled by one state. Where this state took control over economy and dictates its own rules and orders. Where globalization doesn't mean peace and prosperity, but, in fact, causes even more terror, trouble, and war. Where one religion took over, and the country that rules the world is an Islamic terrorist state. First novel by Michael Solomon, The Conversion Prophecy, strikes us with a bright and contemporary version of dystopia, which, perhaps, has never been as actual as it is now. The pictures it paints are truly thrilling, believable and horrifying as we know, nothing hurts more than truth, and a true horror begins where the fantasy ends. The book is amazingly engaging, and at a certain point it is hard to say whether it is about a dystopian version of the world we actually live in, or foreseeing the world we might live soon. What if Islam takes over the world? Can it happen? Is it already happening? Regardless, the world in trouble needs a hero. Our hero, an exceptional man, who is dabbling with secret societies and claiming to stop the inevitable, brings a new spark into our world view and makes us take a look from another perspective. Michael Solomon's political thriller not only presumes one of the bravest and ambiguous what-ifs nowadays, but also gladdens a sophisticated reader with its well-thought and believable plot, developed characters, researched historical and political basis and decent, intriguing writing style. All of those make Michael Solomon's best-seller a great food for thought for those who are interested or concerned about politics and our brave new worlds future --Book Plex

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. The Manchurian Candidate In A Digital Interwoven World By TriedandTrue This novel will have you believing it could be true, as it slowly introduces us to a silent watchdog that is noticing disturbing signs of a coming financial attack on the western world through a very patient culture. It understands that if a world order could successfully infiltrate into a society's business culture it could also destroy the fabric that holds it together without the use of force. And best of all it could watch world leaders submit almost overnight, convincing their citizens around the world "to obey in the name of peace." I read it in less than three sittings not wanting to put it down, wondering what was around the next corner. As you enter the novel you are involved in the subtle transformation of power in the United States. Soon thereafter you're introduced to a pair of young international students who become entangled in a web of deceit. Their early acceptance of a way of life allows stunning educational opportunities to knock on their door. As they grow into successful adults, they're led to believe they control their own fate. This all takes place in a not-to-far-off future world where global governments enjoy a peaceful existence, believing multiculturalism has become the ultimate success for world peace. As frightening as the premise is, so to it is not surprising that the author asks us the brutal question concerning his novel's dark warning, "Can this happen or has it already begun?"Looking at the political world that surrounds us today, you need to put "The Conversion Prophecy" on your list as the next must read.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. A Great Read By TheDon A vivid and suspenseful read, Michael Solomon paints a wonderfully horrifying picture of what could be happening right under the noses of our world leaders. I read the Conversion Prophecy cover to cover in one sitting. Although fiction, the book hits close to home and is near impossible to put down once you get started.

Through frayed days and gritty nights come characters with their wits—and fists—about them. In Jonathan Lyons’ elemental tales, we find the butane-flamed black bottom of a spoon that loosens a musician from his loves. Dropping minnows and falling moments. The welcoming crawl space of a Fox Head. And a sonic tide in Iowa. Like the narrator in many of these stories, Lyons doubles back, writing and re-writing the negative, tracking the time before the crisis in the lives of everyday people. Here are stories to make you, too, alert to possibility.

Author Juvenal Acosta via Jønathan Lyons By Cenobyte "Just like some of his literary ancestors, from Walt Whitman to Jorge Luis Borges, Jønathan Lyons has had the epiphany that we change the literary canon as we mess with utmost yet responsible disregard with syntax and form, not just plot, images, or metaphors. 4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Architecture: Objectives By yonder The Stones of Venice By John Ruskin is an excellent narrative in which he compares two classical buildings, the Ducal Palace with St. Marks. Both buildings are located in Venice, and as usual he goes into the history of Venice that is made up of several islands that are connected by canals and bridges. He goes as far as starting with the stone that involves transportation from the quarries as cut pieces ready for buildings, the pieces are not symetrical and they are used for support. he decribes every section of the buildings and how they came to be, and the use of artists from the East to make the mosaics. He gives specific guidelines for the proper use of intrustation, light, and paint.John Ruskin compares the palaces to the homes of the citizens and states' that the great buildings are extensions of the homes, they just happen to be larger and more elaborate, they are meant to be the place where the public can serve their God.He also talks about the artists who created the buildings and how he was able to date the structures and tell the difference between the construction from the 13th, 14th, and 15th century in the same building, the difference between techniques through the centuries. He was able to detect Lombard, Bystantine, and Renaissance building methods. This is an excellent book and serves as a wonderful guide to the use of building techniques.SPRThe Classical Language of ArchitectureThe Architecture of the Classical InteriorClassical Architecture: The Poetics of OrderThe American Vignola: A Guide to the Making of Classical Architecture (Dover Architecture)

Junior is a ten-year-old boy who leaves his familiar home in a small, rural island village and travels with his mother to join her new husband in big city, New York. The story meets us at his emotional separation from his beloved grandmother and boyhood friends. It takes us through the many bumps along the journey as he tries to find his Sense of Belonging in this perplexing, new home. He discovers, as immigrant children do, that there are many challenges. The size and speed of life, new people, strange customs, puzzling behaviors, feelings of isolation and bullying in school all play their part in his journey. This is a modern-day story about the value of family love and support, the wisdom of lessons learned from elders and the process by which a boy finds his inner strength, just when he needs it most.

By Shaun Brooks This book reminds me of the most pleasant of times as a young boy growing up in the tropical paradise called Jamaica. The author does a wonderful job of capturing the beauty and wonderment of childhood memories especially for one whose home and love is their native country. As I sat each night and read this book to my American born children the questions flow from their churning minds as to what is that, why did he, can we go... With glee my wife and I took great delight in explaining every tidbit of Jamaican life to them. As their curiosity raised so did our longing to re-experience and relive the magic of our childhood. I find this book to be a great conversational tool that helps in bridging the worlds that seems so far between migrants and their children. The author seemingly captured the nostalgia of life back home, while helping the reader to understand the complexity and unsettled state of mind that many immigrant children experience when they come to America. The depth of thought and animation of language in this book underscores the fact that the author cared deeply and shared bountifully from that which is personal, emotive, and significant. I would like to recommend this book to parents with children who are seeking to migrate as a helpful tool in preparing their young ones for the emotional ups and downs ahead. I recommend this book to teachers who would like to provide a conversational piece in the classroom so that an understanding of what others go through could build empathy among their students. I recommend this book as a tool to help guide faith based leaders with an immigrant membership to develop useful ministries that can help to alleviate the dissonance of separation. In short I recommend this book to everyone who has ever migrated and felt the longing due to homesickness and the struggle of adaptation. This book deserves to be on your shelf.

He loved to experience the transition from the eyes of a child. He loved that the book ended when the boy found his own sense of belonging. My son loved that the book also gave great advice. It was a great read and perfect for my child's age and his own life experiences.

“Won’t you stay a little longer?” the hostess asked while she held the girl’s hand and smiled. “It’s too early for every one to go—it’s too absurd.” Mrs. Churchley inclined her head to one side and looked gracious; she flourished about her face, in a vaguely protecting sheltering way, an enormous fan of red feathers. Everything in her composition, for Adela Chart, was enormous. She had big eyes, big teeth, big shoulders, big hands, big rings and bracelets, big jewels of every sort and many of them. The train of her crimson dress was longer than any other; her house was huge; her drawing-room, especially now that the company had left it, looked vast, and it offered to the girl’s eyes a collection of the largest sofas and chairs, pictures, mirrors, clocks, that she had ever beheld. Was Mrs. Churchley’s fortune also large, to account for so many immensities? Of this Adela could know nothing, but it struck her, while she smiled sweetly back at their entertainer, that she had better try to find out. Mrs. Churchley had at least a high-hung carriage drawn by the tallest horses, and in the Row she was to be seen perched on a mighty hunter. She was high and extensive herself, though not exactly fat; her bones were big, her limbs were long, and her loud hurrying voice resembled the bell of a steamboat. While she spoke to his daughter she had the air of hiding from Colonel Chart, a little shyly, behind the wide ostrich fan. But Colonel Chart was not a man to be either ignored or eluded.

A Novella, Not a Novel By Meks Librarian For me, it was the first time ever I read anything by Henry James, which might be surprising, seen that I was originally trained as a librarian, and Mr. James has certainly contributed largely enough to the world of literature."The Marriages" was written in 1891 and is classified as a novella on Wikipedia - unfortunately, this information was not available on the Amazon product page, but it would have been good to know beforehand, since then the shortness of the book would not have come as such a surprise.I liked this book - not for the main character, young Adela, who to me comes across like a rather selfish person, given to hysterical and over-dramatic reactions, but for its language. The descriptions of characters and settings are beautiful and atmospheric without being too lengthy, and the age of this novella does not diminuish the pleasurable reading experience, since it is still easy enough to understand, without needing a dictionary. Two marriages - actually three - are the background for this book; one that sadly ended in the death of the wife long before the events of the novella take place, one that should never have happened, and one that never comes about - but maybe would have been good. And it is this that I missed in the book, this exploring of what could have been, how the characters could have developed further.Still, "The Marriages" was certainly not a waste of time. I just wish I would have known from the start it was not a full-length novel, but a novella.

James nodded! :( [Just as well it is pretty short] By Robert C Ross I read this novella, and re-read my original Review, a few minutes ago, and am sad to report that my opinion of the work, despite being well written and easy to read aloud, is well below James' usually high standard.***I reviewed this ebook in 2010 in another Kindle edition, which has now been removed from Amazon. This Kindle version appears to be similar, although the biographical material was not present in the first version. My original Review, written a few weeks before my wife's death, reads as follows:***I read this relatively early James novella to my wife recently and can report that the text flows easily, there are a few very pretty turns of phrases, and there are a couple of plot twists of real interest. Nonetheless, this novella failed for both of us in a number of respects. The novella appeared in "The Atlantic Monthly", August, 1891 (but apparently written earlier), and was based on a true story which James noted in his notebook: "Sir J R is to marry Dowager Lady T ... Mrs S C says simply forty years of her mother's life wiped out."Some of the descriptions by James are priceless: "Everything in her composition, for Adela Chart, was enormous. She had big eyes, big teeth, big shoulders, big hands, big rings and bracelets, big jewels of every sort and many of them. The train of her crimson dress was longer than any other; her house was huge; her drawing-room, especially now that the company had left it, looked vast, and it offered to the girl's eyes a collection of the largest sofas and chairs, pictures, mirrors, clocks, that she had ever beheld. Was Mrs. Churchley's fortune also large, to account for so many immensities?"James's brings to life the wiped out "forty years" of Adela's mother: ""All right to come and take darling mamma's place--to sit where SHE used to sit, to lay her horrible hands on HER things?" Adela was appalled--all the more that she hadn't expected it--at her brother's apparent acceptance of such a prospect." One critic writes that Adela carries "tactlessness to a fine frenzy," a very fair appraisal. It's the brother and his reaction to his sister's intermeddling that troubled us both. He seems to have believed that Mrs. Churchley would be of immeasurable help with his own matrimonial problems. There may have been emotional support in that quarter, but his father seems to have handled the problem with a bit of money. That plot twist destroyed our pleasure in the entire story primarily because the relationship between the two siblings was so very important.Robert C. Ross 2010Revised April 2012Revised February 2015

Cmde. P.R. Franklin, AVSM, VSM (retd.) narrates some true accounts of the Soviet Foxtrot submarines that were in Indian Navy service. The names of the eight Foxtrots have been anagrammed to arrive at the name "Vanshali", which is the central submarine character of these narratives. The book covers a spectrum of the activities of Foxtrots in the service including facets of training in the USSR, taking possession, bringing them to India, wartime and peacetime activities, and finally beaching a Foxtrot for display as a museum. The book has interesting revelations of a brush with a nuclear submarine in the Arabian Sea and of an Indian submarine's predicament when confronted with the situation of meeting up with the American Carrier USS Enterprise when it entered the Bay of Bengal during 1971 Indo-Pak war.

Foxtrots of the Indian Navy, by Cmde P R Franklin (Retd)

About the Author Commodore P.R. Franklin, AVSM, VSM, did his submarine training in Vladivostok, in erstwhile USSR. He commissioned the third and the sixth of the eight ‘Foxtrot’ class submarines that the Indian Navy purchased, and sailed them from Riga, Latvia, to India round Africa in the late sixties/early seventies. He subsequently commanded two of them. After a few squadron appointments both afloat and ashore, he headed the submarine arm as Director Submarine Operations in Naval Headquarters. Among his other appointments in the navy, he commanded the Training Squadron training officer cadets of the Indian Navy, INS Venduruthy in Kochi, was Naval Assistant to the Chief of the Naval Staff, the Naval Advisor to the Indian High Commissioner in the United Kingdom, and the Naval Officer-in-Charge Tamil Nadu & Pondicherry. A graduate of the Defence Services Staff College, he also served as Directing Staff in that institution. He did the higher command and staff course in the former Marshal A.A.Grechkov Academy in Leningrad (renamed now as the N.G. Kuznetsov Academy in St. Petersburg). He was awarded the Vishisht Seva Medal in 1995 and the Ati Vishisht Seva Medal in 2001 by the President of India. After retiring from the navy after 36 years of commissioned service, he was a consultant for a brief spell to a private Indian company while it produced a Submarine Control Simulator for the Indian nuclear propelled submarine, INS Arihant. He is also the author of the book titled ‘Handbook of Submarine Operations’.

Excellent anecdotes on a Cold War Warrior By KRISHNA JAGA Books exclusively on the Indian Navy's third dimension - the force multiplying submarine arm- are very rare - and this is probably the first by an Indian Navy submariner on this formidable Cold War warrior .This is a very welcome first anecdotal history of the Russian Project I 861 (Nato code name Foxtrot) - Indian Kalvari/Vela class submarines which pioneered India's submarine arm .Commodore P.R. Franklin , the author and submarine commander , was trained in the former ,commissioned and commanded two of these Foxtrots and has penned these historical anecdotes which serves as a tribute to these robust subs..The author has coined an anagram of the 8 Foxtrot submarines (INS Kalvari, Khanderi, Karanj, Kursura, Vela, Vagir, Vagli, and Vaghsheer) into one main protagonist - the INS Vanshali to retain confidentiality and ensure a fast paced travails and tribulations of this sub. While this is not a historical book ,in terms of an official history or a chronological sequence of dates and events - it serves as an anecdotal history without specific dates and is bound to evoke nostalgia from the crew who served and the reader who would be awed by the exploits. The author states that the fledgling Indian Navy had been promised one sub from the advanced Oberon class by the UK in the mid 60's who subsequently demanded a huge sum ,disagreed on the payment terms and ultimately reneged on the same and it was the Soviets who offered the diesel electric Foxtrot class on much more lucrative terms which also included the barter of bananas and shoes !! All the initial complement for this submarine arm were volunteers who were brave enough to accept the challenges and risks of being a submariner. The opening chapter describes the Foxtrot Class ,with a layout diagram on the topology of the submarine. This cold war warrior was designed to traverse an astonishing 36000 nautical miles (halfway around the world) without refuelling and was designed for extreme endurance for upto 40 days of continuous patrol . The durability of this class is confirmed by the fact that not a single submarine was lost during its operations from the late '60's till decommissing in 2006.We learn of the many hardships during the initial training in the Soviet Union when food was scarce and some of the "misadventures" and escapades of the team - also the arduous journey of crossing Africa (since the Suez canal was closed due to war) and the calling at many ports - Canary Islands , Nigeria with an interesting geo-political description of the times. The most interesting and sensational disclosure of the book is straight from one of the many Tom Clancy /Patrick Robinson thrillers - ie how one of the Foxtrots came close to firing a torpedo at a foreign "nuclear" submarine during the 1971 Indo- Pak war.The Foxtrot "INS Vanshali " which was patrolling the Arabian sea detected a Sonar signature of a submarine. It was identified as being of foreign origin and in "hostile territory" and the acoustic signature suggested it was possibly nuclear powered and as per the prescribed rules of engagement , Vanshali's commander could not engage unless it was engaged or fired upon first .INS Vanshali went into battle stations and the hunting engagement almost reached a thrilling finale when the other sub "blinked" and disengaged. What was this mystery foreign submarine ? Was this part of the formidable US Seventh Fleet ? Possibly we will learn one day when the naval records are declassified or another submariner recounts his memoirs.Cmde Franklin ,who has also written an authoritative book on "Submarine operations" for the National Maritime foundation, has included chapters on the complexities of undersea warfare , deception on the fleet exercises and torpedo practice firings which gives an amazing insight into the mind of a Foxtrot submarine commander who did not have sophisticated instruments like GPS and today's decision making tools to assist him.The pace of the book is bound to keep the reader spell bound and the author has interspersed the serious narratives with a few anecdotes which are quite hilarious , like the unusual mascot selected for the Foxtrot fleet , more serious encounters with smugglers , near collisions etc .Also of interest is the tale of the Indian shipyards servicing foreign Foxtrots (possibly Egyptian) , only for the Israelis to sink them in war and comment on the unusual teamwork - "You repair them , we sink them".The life of a submariner is exciting, uncertain and stressed , vividly described by the constraints of confined spaces , rationing of basic necessities like water , electricity etc and the reader can feel the thrill and uncertainties of submarine life where split second decisions are needed and a single wrong decision can have fatal consequences.Cmde Franklin also states that if the Navy had been more decisive ,the Foxtrots would have played an impact full role in the "71 war - but on most occasions it was very conservative and risk averse. He reasons that despite the clean chit given by the Soviet trainers , India's operating chiefs were not confident of their ability and possibly feared diplomatic repercussions from an untoward incident .The author has kept this largely anecdotal within the Foxtrot fleet when he could easily have drifted into an autobiographical mode . Also he has refrained from mentioning any of the hostile countries by name and careful to avoid revealing operational doctrines , but in another startling disclosure which will ruffle a few feathers , reveals the subterfuge employed by a few in the Foxtrot fleet to avoid the fleet exercises and possibly hide their shortcomings. There are some important lessons for the Navy to imbibe and with the induction of the nuclear powered submarines like the Akula and Arihant class , the navy will play a major deterrent role. However, the author states that the diesel electric submarines like the Foxtrot and newer classes like the Scorpene , Amur etc will still have a long future due to its versatility and ease of use especially for operations in the Asian countries. Also its interesting to note that during the mid-life upgrade process , Indian battery technology was found to be superior to that of the Russians and these batteries were shipped to be utilised as critical replacements. So what became of the Foxtrots ? As is customary and poignant they were scrapped , however in an exemplary move , the INS Kursura is now a "beached" museum in Vishakapatnam and available for the public to visit and visualise a submariner's life . This is quite laudable when considering the tragic scrapping of the INS Vikrant inspite of public petitions and lobbying and the Indian navy could not allocate the fifty crore rupees (approx USD 10 million) needed to convert the veteran aircraft carrier into a museum . Incidentally the US also has acquired a Foxtrot and its on display at Long Beach , CA. The author's wish is for the Navy to continue the tradition of naming its newer subs with the previous Foxtrot subs - as was done for the Vikrant and esp followed by US/UK navies like the ubiquitous HMS Ark Royal .For further reading ,I would recommend Time Life's Hunters of the Deep (1991) as a basic primer of submarine warfare and modern history, Norman Polmar's Cold War Submarines (2005) for additional details and Joseph Chacko's excellent Indian submarine history "Foxtrot to Arihant" published by Frontier India (2015) .To summarise , I would commend it as an excellent buy ,a must read and a great addition to the small genre of Indian Naval History .The few improvements I can think of ,are inclusion of photographs (currently less than half a dozen) , some preferably in colour and a bolder font facilitating easier reading. and perhaps an index/references for further reading .Nevertheless the book deserves more publicity and readership and is a great addition to the genre of Indian Naval History - albeit an anecdotal one.
