It promotes an enlightened reverence for nature, and has innumerable examples of the extraordinary accomplishments and contributions of inventors, artists, scientists, statesmen, authors, and musicians (to name a few) and of their struggles, sacrifices, and victories.A valuable resource for anyone of any age, and far from being a "How to succeed in business" manual, it has an underlying philosophy clearly rooted in the best of American transcendentalism.

Give it to your kids and tell them it is a rare book that helped to make millionaires - that will get them reading (and besides, it's true)! Greatly motivating and inspiring for both parents and their children.

Making Sense of Singing By Rosemary Reuscher It's with a great deal of pleasure that I write a few words on behalf of my former voice teacher,Harold Hurlbut and his neat little tome, first published in 1916, VOICE FUNDAMENTALS. As a young man from the Midwest;Mr. Hurlbut by the age of 30 hadalready traveled to Europe, spoke fluent Italian, and made the acquaintance of several of the greatest opera singers of the day;Including the great polish tenor Jean DeReszke. By the 1930's he'd established his vocal studio in Hollywood,California; wherehe coached many singers under contract to film studios, including. Dick Powell ,Howard Keel along with many others.Mr. Hurlbut never advocated any particular "method",but rather stressed the fundamental basics of good singing: firm diiaphragmsupport, open relaxed throat and proper articulation of various vowel sounds in order to achieve good resonate tone. Aboveall he emphasized the importance of good health.I am so pleased that the publishers who held this interesting and important archival material decided to release it on theInternet. BRAVO!

In the last decade there has been a major reappraisal of the role and status of the photobook within the history of photography. Newly revised histories of photography as recorded via the photobook have added enormously to our understanding of the medium's culture, particularly in places that are often marginalized, such as Latin America and Africa. However, until now, only a handful of Chinese books have made it onto historians' short lists. Yet China has a fascinating history of photobook publishing, and The Chinese Photobook will reveal for the first time the richness and diversity of this heritage. This volume is based on a collection compiled by Martin Parr and Beijing- and London-based Dutch photographer team WassinkLundgren. And while the collection was inspired initially by Parr's interest in propaganda books and in finding key works of socialist realist photography from the early days of the Communist Party and the Cultural Revolution era, the selection of books includes key volumes published as early as 1900, as well as contemporary volumes by emerging Chinese photographers. Each featured photobook offers a new perspective on the complicated history of China from the twentieth century onward. The Chinese Photobook embodies an unprecedented amount of research and scholarship in this area, and includes accompanying texts and individual title descriptions by Gu Zheng, Raymond Lum, Ruben Lundgren, Stephanie H. Tung and Gerry Badger.

Review An ambitious survey of China’s rich and diverse history of photobooks represents a turning point in narrowing the comprehension gap between East and West. (Maurice Berger The New York Times, Lens)Tracing the history and development of Chinese photo books from the last 150 years, Martin Parr and WassinkLundgren's upcoming publication, The Chinese Photo Book (Aperture Foundation), is a diverse, thorough, and vibrant authority on an overlooked genre. (Suzanne Shaheen vogue.com)The photobook, the show proposes, offers a vernacular story of art, untold by academics and art historians. (Noelle Bodick Art Info)

By Robin Easily the most ambitious of the Aperture photobook series: Japan, 2009; Latin America, 2011; Dutch, 2012, large in size (and weight) with 448 pages and a 1000 colored images from over two hundred and fifty photobooks. Though China might seem a long way from Western influences the country has absorbed these through colonial invasions in the early decades of the last century. Hong Kong, a British colony since 1843 gets a separate chapter (it includes Taiwan as well) which considers photobooks in both places from 1949 onwards. The foreign influence is notable in the books from 1900 to the late twenties with so many of them published in Shanghai in Chinese and English. The Japanese invasion of Manchuria and formation of the state of Manchukuo gets its own chapter because the Japanese published so many propaganda books praising life in their puppet State. Two key chapters look at photobooks published from 1945 and especially books covering the Cultural Revolution from 1966. There are some intriguing titles here: Medical workers serving the people, 1971; Chinese clouds, 1972; Railway bridges, 1973; Catalogue of tongue coating diagnoses in Chinese medicine, 1984; China traffic police, 1989; Road interchanges in Beijing, 1996 and of course plenty featuring the Great Leader Mao Zedong (was he the most photographed man on earth?). The last chapter provides a fitting conclusion by featuring twenty-eight photobooks about China but taken by foreign photographers and published outside the country. Each of the featured books has a technical caption (title, date, size, publisher et cetera and then an essay about the book's editorial, these are always quite fascinating to read because of the amount of detail. I thought the book's design by Kummer & Herrman is worth praising because it's so elegant and Verona printers Graphicom do their usual quality print run, using a three hundred screen, too.One of the pleasures of the book for me are seeing several spreads from each of the featured books and frequently quite large. I always thought Parr and Badger's photobook series for Phaidon were rather over-designed with too much white space which should have been filled with reproductions of photobook pages.A suberb book to be added to anyone's slowly expanding photobook collection.

0 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Wonderful selection of photos! By Steve L. This is yet another terrific compilation of photos put together by Martin Parr. The photos are quite varied, many of them are fascinating, and they comprise a huge time span. As an aside, the book is VERY heavy.

Novelist, daughter of William Stevenson, a Unitarian minister, and for some time Keeper of the Treasury Records. She married William Gaskell, a Unitarian minister, at Manchester, and in 1848 published anonymously her first book, Mary Barton, in which the life and feelings of the manufacturing working classes are depicted with much power and sympathy. Other novels followed, Lizzie Leigh [1855], Mr. Harrison’s Confessions [1865], Ruth [1853], Cranford (1851–3), North and South [1855], Sylvia’s Lovers [1863], etc. Her last work was Wives and Daughters [1865], which appeared in the Cornhill Magazine, and was left unfinished.Mrs. Gaskell had some of the characteristics of Miss Austen, and if her style and delineation of character are less minutely perfect, they are, on the other hand, imbued with a deeper vein of feeling. She was the friend of Charlotte Bronté, to whom her sympathy brought much comfort, and whose Life she wrote. Of Cranford Lord Houghton wrote, “It is the finest piece of humoristic description that has been added to British literature since Charles Lamb.”

By CoffeeGurl It'd been a long time (a decade or so) since I read this Elizabeth Gaskell classic before I watched the BBC adaptation on DVD and loved it. Rereading this novel was the best decision I could have made because I hadn't appreciated it then the way I did now. North and South captures the social divide and how the manufacturing and trading industries were revolutionizing in the 1850s. Margaret Hale, the daughter of a respectable clergyman, and her family move from the south of England to the industrialized northern town of Milton after her father leaves the church because of his conscience. Margaret is appalled with Milton and the vulgar, uncouth ways of tradesmen and merchants, whom she also sees as uncivilized and cruel. However, will she change her mind after she meets and gets to know the dashing Mr. John Thornton? There are many twists throughout the novel.I was able to appreciate the romance and building of tension between Margaret and Mr. Thornton now, especially after having watched the BBC miniseries and the wonderful Richard Armitage playing Thornton. Right now, to me, there are four memorable classic literary heroes -- Mr. Darcy, Heathcliff, Mr. Rochester and now Mr. Thornton. He is gentler and not as brooding here as he is portrayed in the miniseries, but he is as compelling as I had remembered him. The last few pages are my favorite, especially this line: "While she sought for this paper, her very heart-pulse was arrested by the tone in which Mr. Thornton spoke. His voice was hoarse, and trembling with tender passion, as he said: `Margaret.' " What a romantic line and I wish it had been added to the miniseries. The ending at the train station in the miniseries is wonderful (if a bit anachronistic), but it would have been even better if the aforementioned line had been incorporated into the scene. All in all, this is one of my favorite Victorian classics. Elizabeth Gaskell isn't quite as known or as celebrated as Dickens or the Brontes, people who had been big friends of hers, according to her biography, but she was a gifted writer in her own right and her talent shows in this wonderful gem which I will reread again in the not-so-distant future.

105 of 107 people found the following review helpful. Surprisingly modern tale of class conflict, management theory, and of course, love By Amazon Customer I read the book, like many other reviewers here, after I had watched the brilliant BBC miniseries starring Richard Armitage and Daniela Denby-Ashe. I definitely agree with the comments of many reviewers here that you somehow seem to develop a finer appreciation of the nuances of both after doing that.A lot of reviewers have covered the ground admirably on the story itself, so I won't go into too much detail on that. In addition to the fine development of plot and characters alike, what I found refreshing about the novel were:a. Unlike a few other writers of her time, Elizabeth Gaskell focuses a lot more on the thought processes and feelings of the male characters in the novel. For example, you don't get to hear a lot of what Darcy or Edward Ferrars are thinking in Pride and Prejudice, or Sense and Sensibility, except almost tangentially. In sharp contrast, Mrs. Gaskell gives quite a detailed peep into what John Thornton and Richard Hale are thinking, throughout the novel. As someone who is always interested in the differences in thought processes between the sexes, I found this to be refreshingly different from other novels of the time.b. Being in business, it was quite a new experience to read about John Thornton's evolution first as a business owner and then as a "leader", to use that overused term of today. Mrs. Gaskell appears to have a remarkably sophisticated understanding of both management and labor issues. The examples that stand out in my mind - John Thornton's increasing interest in exploring a better construct for labor-management relations beyond the mere "cash nexus" (towards the end of the novel), and his practice of building what we would call a business case today, as he asks Nicholas Higgins to put some figures together for the new cafeteria.c. A valuable peep into the mores of the time - for example, despite being fond of Bessy Higgins, Margaret recoils in horror at the thought of visiting her after Bessy's death, a point glossed over in the BBC mini-series, - it gives you a rare insight into things like death and burial customs of the time,.I must agree with a few other reviewers that the last few chapters seem a little rushed, but from an overall perspective, it is hard to beat this novel for its pure wholesome enjoyment value - more serious and deep than a Pride and Prejudice, and still light enough for people like me who cannot take Thomas Hardy. A definite five stars!

Yes, there is a very slow start to this novel. I wonder whether that's because it was first serialized by Dickens, and Mrs. Gaskell was paid by the word. And, yes, the ending is rather abrupt, especially preceded by the last few slow chapters. Maybe Dickens lost his patience. In so many ways, though, this novel is a treasure. It's not easy to write a political novel with a strong love story and good characterizations. Gaskell takes on quite a bit and mostly succeeds in her task of describing the changes industrialization brought to England. She balances her sympathy for the workers in the factories with the dilemmas posed to the mill owners by new machinery, competition from abroad, and the threats of potential workers' strikes. She contrasts very effectively the excitement of this new way of life against the nostalgia for the agrarian past. These were new concepts in Victorian England, but they are not so foreign today that we cannot readily understand their significance. She gives us a sympathetic and spirited heroine in Margaret Hale, who is wise beyond her years. Another colorful character is Nicholas Higgins. I found myself looking forward to his scenes because he provides the humor in an almost-humorless book. (It is funny at the end, though, and I would have liked to have seen more of this tone.)Mr. Thornton is a character we can readily identify with--someone who triumphs over adversity and seeks to constantly better himself. Someone with high standards, yet none higher than he holds himself to. Margaret is his match in every way.I did see many plot similarities with "Pride and Prejudice" in the love story. We have characters of different class backgrounds who are initially repelled but who come to appreciate each other and are kept apart by misunderstandings and circumstances. The proposal scenes are strikingly familiar, and the first proposal includes almost the same language (re gentlemanlike behavior) that Elizabeth speaks to Darcy. And we have a Lady Catherine DeBourgh character in Mrs. Thornton, who does her best to drive the lovers apart. But I can't fault Mrs. Gaskell for borrowing plotlines from the master. Although Gaskell is a strong writer, she does not quite have Jane Austen's gift for revealing the humanity in her characters with humor and affection. There is not much "fun" and no banter (until the very last lines of the book) in the North and South love story. There are many plot contrivances and conveniences, too, which compel us to suspend disbelief. A few too many rapid deaths, a character's coincidental presence at a key scene, another character showing up in an unexpected place, and more. But these limitations serve to drive the story and allow us to focus on the strong moral characters of our central characters and our strong wish for their eventual reconciliation. In the Penguin edition, it is also rather disturbing to find the plot given away in the footnotes. I read the footnotes religiously to orient myself, but I don't understand why they have to mention so many plot occurrences (especially big things like deaths and proposals) ahead of time. So, if you don't want to know how things go, read the footnotes (and preface) judiciously.OK, I've written a lot of negatives and yet I give the book 4 stars. Despite its flaws, North and South takes on a lot and mainly succeeds. I love its ambition and its great heart. I love that I learned a lot about English history at that particular time. I love that it rewarded me for getting through those first 150 pages with a rich, compelling story. I love that Mrs. Gaskell held my interest to the end. As Victorian novels go, this is surprisingly modern and a worthwhile read.

Bert Childs was with the 1st Airborne Division when they made their debut jump in North Africa. He was almost shot down on the way to Sicily and became one of the first recruits into the 6th Airborne Division in 1943. With them he dropped at Pegasus Bridge, battled the Bulge, jumped the Rhine and fought through northern Germany to meet the Russians on the Baltic Coast. Diary of a 1st & 6th Airborne Paratrooper is his first hand recollections of those adventures and reveals the minds and personalities of the men who carried out such dangerous war-time operations.

Through the middle decades of the Twentieth Century a large Southern family struggles for economic security and social respectability. Hardships, disappointments and catastrophes, ranging from the father's alcoholism to an accidental gun death, threaten to overwhelm even the most determined and resilient members of the Cooke family. The Cookes, along with other inhabitants of their rural community, must cope not only with personal weaknesses and conflicts but also with the changing world around them: the southeastern United States as it evolves from an agricultural to an industrial economy-- a generational shift from farm to factory.

Bates This is indeed a novel in stories: the story of a full generation of one family from early childhood to late adulthood in a series of well-written short stories told from the point of view of different members of the family at different times. I am one generation removed from the pre-WWII farm and while my parents had both moved to town by their adolescence they had family still on the farm during the Great Depression, WWII and the immediate post-war era. While their stories were about the piney woods of southwest Georgia instead of the mountains of western North Carolina, they were similar in nature. Kermit is not old enough for his stories to be biographical, but he surely has enough first-hand oral history and the narrative skills to capture the atmosphere as if these were his personal stories. The stories are very well-written, and I must admit I could not finish "Tacks"; I knew everything would turn out all right in the end, but I still couldn't read about Jay filling his mouth full of tacks. The short story is a very difficult medium. Assembling a series of independent, well-crafted short stories which together make up a complete episodic novel as Kermit has done is indeed a tour-de-force. Just before reading this book I completed Ron Rash's "Burning Bright" and find no noticeable difference in quality between the two. I strongly recommend A Matter of Blood.

The perfect gift for Christmas By Lynn Moretz From the perspective of a person who has lived 73 years in the South, the voices and the life experiences of the characters in "A Matter of Blood" ring with truth and a deep understanding of human nature. The stark variety of persons resulting from one family tree presents a complex and compelling read. This is the perfect book as gifts for people who relish gaining a new family of fictional members. A collection of stories which hang together like chapters in a novel. Although fiction, the details and realism paint a picture of rural and small town life in the South from the Great Depression into the 21st century. Turner sees the human struggle to survive and human frailty with truthful accuracy tempered with compassionate understanding. You will want to read it more than once. Ted T

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. ...an amazingly beautiful and sexy and romantic and suspensy and adorable summer read!!! By Bianca @BJsBB 5-star-review for books 1+2Sunny was born on St. Bart's. That was almost 23 years ago. After moving all over the world for her Dad's job she's now back on the beautiful island to bury her father's ashes. It was his last wish to be laid to rest with his beloved wife. And she's back on St. Bart's to finally start her own, grown-up life. She plans on building and then renting out vacation villas to all the über-rich and sometimes famous tourists. She's extremely busy with her renovations and the plans for the villas and jobbing in a restaurant - cooking is one of her greatest pleasures! Then she's offered a job as a translator for a movie that's being filmed on the island. That's when we meet Sven Larsen - he's on his way to become a big name in Hollywood. And he really needs to make it, because he's not getting any younger - he's in his mid-thirties already. This movie could be really good for his career. Little did he know that the island would also bring him Sunny. He's totally charmed by her innocence, her joy for life, her 'naturalness'. And Sunny - she finally knows what she wants. She's always had journals full of plans and to-do lists (she's a list-a-holic!) - and on one of her lists it says: Have Sex!Her Dad had always sheltered her way too much - she never had a real social life. But now's her time. That's why she asks Sven to be her sexual mentor.☺It takes a while for Sven to get over the shock of hearing this innocently asked question - but he just can't do it. He doesn't want to 'destroy' the innocence of someone who's so beautiful - inside and out.But - of course - his oath to keep away from her doesn't keep her away from him, and he finally gives in. And thus start some very sexy and romantic sexual lessons.☺☺☺And for Sven those lessons are very frustrating! He wants to go really slow with her...That's where his very unlikable Co-Star Eden comes into the picture. He needs to have sex with someone other than his sweet & innocent student!Eden is not the only person who wants Sven to get somewhere in Hollywood. There's also his best friend Clyde. He can't understand what Sven sees in this island whore - as he calls her. Then there's a whole bunch of other great co-stars in the book. Mimi - who becomes her best friend - she knew Sunny's parents. Mimi's lover, Restaurant-owner Philippe. Ivan - the sleazy russian movie producer - he has his own reasons for wanting Sunny to work at the movie set. The moody russian Director Mikhail. Then there's Sunny's family doctor - the police captain - a few stray dogs etc. etc.Lots of things happen in these books and I really mean LOTS of ... funny things - romantic things - sexy & very hot things - moving things - sad things - heartbreakingly sad things .....Will Sunny & Sven make it?Will they get their HEA?Or will everybody die at the end? Will there be a Cliffhanger????☺☺☺I'm not telling you of course ☺☺☺Ok - I might tell you that, since there will be a few more books about Sunny & Sven, there will be much more to tell - BUT there's no Cliffhanger really - The series could be over now - it could be a stand-alone Romance and we could live with it - BUT we'll get more ☺YAYYYY_________________________________I REALLY LOOOVED READING THE BOOKs!!!A book that makes me cry in the first chapter can only be awesome!!!and it really was! It was Emme's first book - she previously only wrote short, unromantic stuff for Radio News etc.And for a first-time Romance - it was really amazing!!!! Hm, even if it had been her 15th book it would've been amazing ☺You might think it starts out a bit... bleh...boring - uninteresting. And it really does - a tiny little bit maybe....It's really cute and moving and interesting in the beginning - we learn a lot about all of the characters and especially about the Island, but the REAL interesting story starts a tiny little bit later ☺.You won't be able to put the books down. You NEED to know what will happen. It's like a Hitchcock/StephenKing-movie - you sit there with your little reader-heart pounding like crazy!Ugh it was so amazing! We only have SEX of course - really sweet and innocent and HOT sex! Sven is so adorably patient with Sunny! He's had it with this stupid Hollywood lifestyle of parties, sex, drugs, sex, alcohol etc. He wants... "Something real. Something permanent." Then we have all the jealous and greedy and unlikable side characters with their schemes... Then there's suspense!!!! There are many parts of the book where I SOOOO wanted to do this to a few characters - including Sven!I really liked Emme's writing style. I felt like I was right there on St. Bart's with them. Like I was an extra in the movie production and got to eavesdrop on everything that happened ☺ And the idea of writing a book about this beautiful island - PERFECT! It was so totally different from all the other books we're always reading. No New York, LA, Seattle, London ☺ St. Bart's!!! ♥ I sooo wanna go there now!!!!! (OK, that's not totally true - we WILL go to LA & Norway etc. but we're on St. Bart's most of the time!!)OK, that's it!! I'm not telling you any more about the story - I don't want to spoil too much and your already weak heart might not like it when I tell you that Ms Cross is not a fan of HEAs!!! Hehe ☺☺☺►► Please go and buy the books - you won't regret it - you will fall in love with Sunny, Sven & St. Bart's just like I did!and now please Emme - GIVE. ME. MORE!!!!I NEEEEED to read what will happen to Sunny & Sven next!

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. a great read By Jeannie Zelos St. Barts. Emme CrossReview from Jeannie Zelos Book reviews.**NB: This review covers this book and the next, Lessons on St Bart's. When I reviewed them they were one book that was later split into two. **So, a new to me author, and a fun sounding book. It's tagged as erotica too – that's diverting :) So I requested it for review, and started reading. Its a long book, at 328 pages. I love longer books as they allow the author to really integrate the plots with the places, and let us see all facets of the lead characters. Sadly they're unusual now, so many seem to be in the 120 to 180 page length. There was a host of people here, Sunny and Sven of course, but there were Sunny's island friends, and the film crew, many of which played a strong part in the novel. Its not just an erotic book – to me its a solid romance, with erotic and sensual love scenes. No smutty, grubby sex added in to boost ratings, but sultry, intimate, passionate acts. Sunny's friends were a great mix, each playing their own part in the overall story, and I enjoyed reading about them. The island – well, I’m in love, it sounds idyllic and as for Sunny's villas – I’d love, love, love to stay somewhere like that. ( when I win the lottery of course!)Sunny, she was great, though at times a little too good to be true...but overall one of those lovely, caring, non-judgemental people we'd all like to have as a friend. She's there to help anyone whenever she can, but after the sadness she saw when her mum died and her dad was so lost without her, and now he's gone too she thinks Love isn’t worth the heartbreak, but she would like to try dating. She feels that she needs to learn all the things a girl of her age with a less sheltered upbringing would know. She doesn't want a full time partner, just someone to teach her. She's learned everything else through practical lessons, and making notes so why not the art of sex? She proposes this to Sven, after they've met and she feels he's the sort of person she can trust. He'll be gone when the film ends, so she thinks its perfect for both of them...and to begin with it is. I liked Sven too, he's tired of the sham, shallow, playboy lifestyle, and Sunny is there just at the right time for him. There's a feeling their lessons are turning into more, but I have to say there's a couple of times I was really, really annoyed at Sven for his actions. Its not just the love lessons though – the book is so much more. The practicalities of the film and the effects on other island residents. Sunny's villas and their fitting out for rental. The little interludes of everyday life that give the novel such a realistic feel. Then there's in the latter part of the book some serious threats to Sunny, and no one knows who's to blame. Its part romance, part erotica and part suspense. I had an idea who was behind the danger, but the motivations were a real surprise to me.This is a standalone novel and there's no need to read more, but the story continues with more from Sunny and Sven and I’d love to read that.Stars: four and a half, a read that kept me engrossed for hours. Since it is set on a tropical island it would indeed be enjoyable to read it on a beach, but its characters and plot are interesting enough to make it likely that the book will distract you from your people watching rather than the reverse.Reviewers are comparing Emme Cross to Jilly Cooper, and I think they've got it right. This story of the virginal young Sunny O'Hara visiting the Caribbean island where she was born and meeting and falling in love with a movie star, the heart-breaker Sven Larson, is sexy and intriguing. Will warm your heart even on a cold beach!

During the first half of 1944, the Americans and British commenced a massive buildup of men and resources in the United Kingdom, while Allied Supreme Commander Dwight D. Eisenhower and military brass planned the details of an enormous and complex amphibious invasion of Europe. Though the Allies used misinformation to try deceiving the Germans, the most obvious place for an invasion was just across the narrow English Channel, and the Germans had built coastal fortifications throughout France to protect against just such an invasion. The invasion across the Channel came in the early morning hours of June 6, 1944. That day, forever known as D-Day, the Allies commenced Operation Overlord by staging the largest and most complex amphibious invasion in human history. The complex operation would require tightly coordinated naval and air bombardment, paratroopers, and even inflatable tanks that would be able to fire on fortifications from the coastline, all while landing over 150,000 men across nearly 70 miles of French beaches. Given the incredibly complex plan, it’s no surprise that General Eisenhower had already written a letter apologizing for the failure of the invasion, which he carried in his coat pocket throughout the day. After the successful amphibious invasion on D-Day in June 1944, the Allies began racing east toward Germany and liberating France along the way. It was Hitler’s belief that by splitting the Allied march across Europe in their drive toward Germany, he could cause the collapse of the enemy armies and cut off their supply lines. Part of Hitler’s confidence came as a result of underestimating American resolve, but with the Soviets racing toward Berlin from the east, this final offensive would truly be the last gasp of the German war machine, and the month long campaign was fought over a large area of the Ardennes Forest, through France, Belgium and parts of Luxembourg. From an Allied point of view, the operations were commonly referred to as the Ardennes Offensive, while the German code phrase for the operation was Unternehmen Wacht am Rhein (“Operation Watch on the Rhine”), with the initial breakout going under the name of “Operation Mist.” Today, Americans know it best as the Battle of the Bulge. After resisting the German attack, the Allied armies began advancing, and with that, the race to Berlin was truly on. In April 1945, the Allies were within sight of the German capital of Berlin, but Hitler refused to acknowledge the collapsed state of the German military effort even at this desperate stage, and he confined himself to his Berlin bunker where he met for prolonged periods only with those that professed eternal loyalty, even to the point of death. In his last weeks, Hitler continued to blame the incompetence of military officers for Germany’s apparent failings, and he even blamed the German people themselves for a lack of spirit and strength. As their leader dwelled in a state of self-pity, without remorse or mercy but near suicide, the people of Berlin were simply left to await their fate as Russians advanced from the east and the other Allies advanced from the west. The battle would technically begin on April 16, 1945, and though it ended in a matter of weeks, it produced some of the war’s most climactic events and had profound implications on the immediate future. In the wake of the war, the European continent was devastated, leaving the Soviet Union and the United States as uncontested superpowers.

Eclectic School Readings: Stories from Life, by Orison Swett Marden

About the Author Orison Swett Marden (1850-1924) was the founder of Success Magazine and is considered by many to be the founder of the modern success and positive thinking movement. He changed the old notions of success with the new more comprehensive ideas made popular by best-selling authors such as Napoleon Hill, Clement Stone, Dale Carnegie, Og Mandino, Earl Nightingale, Norman Vincent Peale, and many others. Some famous Quotes from Orison Swett Marden: A constant struggle, a ceaseless battle to bring success from inhospitable surroundings, is the price of all great achievements. A good system shortens the road to the goal. A strong, successful man is not the victim of his environment. He creates favorable conditions. His own inherent force and energy compel things to turn out as he desires. A will finds a way. Achievement is not always success, while reputed failure often is. It is honest endeavor, persistent effort to do the best possible under any and all circumstances. All men who have achieved great things have been great dreamers. All who have accomplished great things have had a great aim, have fixed their gaze on a goal which was high, one which sometimes seemed impossible. Analyzing what you haven't got as well as what you have is a necessary ingredient of a career. Be larger than your task.
