Through the middle decades of the Twentieth Century a large Southern family struggles for economic security and social respectability. Hardships, disappointments and catastrophes, ranging from the father's alcoholism to an accidental gun death, threaten to overwhelm even the most determined and resilient members of the Cooke family. The Cookes, along with other inhabitants of their rural community, must cope not only with personal weaknesses and conflicts but also with the changing world around them: the southeastern United States as it evolves from an agricultural to an industrial economy-- a generational shift from farm to factory.

Bates This is indeed a novel in stories: the story of a full generation of one family from early childhood to late adulthood in a series of well-written short stories told from the point of view of different members of the family at different times. I am one generation removed from the pre-WWII farm and while my parents had both moved to town by their adolescence they had family still on the farm during the Great Depression, WWII and the immediate post-war era. While their stories were about the piney woods of southwest Georgia instead of the mountains of western North Carolina, they were similar in nature. Kermit is not old enough for his stories to be biographical, but he surely has enough first-hand oral history and the narrative skills to capture the atmosphere as if these were his personal stories. The stories are very well-written, and I must admit I could not finish "Tacks"; I knew everything would turn out all right in the end, but I still couldn't read about Jay filling his mouth full of tacks. The short story is a very difficult medium. Assembling a series of independent, well-crafted short stories which together make up a complete episodic novel as Kermit has done is indeed a tour-de-force. Just before reading this book I completed Ron Rash's "Burning Bright" and find no noticeable difference in quality between the two. I strongly recommend A Matter of Blood.

The perfect gift for Christmas By Lynn Moretz From the perspective of a person who has lived 73 years in the South, the voices and the life experiences of the characters in "A Matter of Blood" ring with truth and a deep understanding of human nature. The stark variety of persons resulting from one family tree presents a complex and compelling read. This is the perfect book as gifts for people who relish gaining a new family of fictional members. A collection of stories which hang together like chapters in a novel. Although fiction, the details and realism paint a picture of rural and small town life in the South from the Great Depression into the 21st century. Turner sees the human struggle to survive and human frailty with truthful accuracy tempered with compassionate understanding. You will want to read it more than once. Ted T
