Amazing writer on another unique topic By Sue Katz Years ago in an apartment in Barcelona I had the privilege of reading this amazing book in manuscript form. To this day I can remember the powerful opening lines. Richard Schweid is a funny and inquisitive writer I have followed since his astounding earlier books: "Hot Peppers," "Catfish and the Delta," "Consider the Eel," and more. Schweid has a way of getting his teeth into a subject (perhaps not the right image for "Cockroach"!) and digesting it in all its many contexts - from the day-to-day to the historical, economic and cultural aspects. He writes the books you never knew you wanted to read, but when you're done, he's taken you into deeply into a subject via compelling prose and unflinching wit. At last one of his excellent books is on Kindle - I only hope to see all the rest here soon.

Each book takes a deep look at some eclectic subject (eels, chili peppers, life after death, antique Cuban cars) and reveals unexpected nuance and color. Who knew cockroaches were so fascinating? Schweid's writing style is light, informed, and witty. His voice is like that favorite professor most of us had at some point --- the one who made learning fun, intriguing, and slightly subversive. Having covered these ultimate survivors, I'm hoping Schweid will now write a book about Keith Richards...

It's also about wanting to save the world, realizing how important it is to understand a bit more about biology, ecology, history, and economics. It's also about the pleasure of discovery.
