WHY YOU CAN DRAW WITH GRIDS, AND WHY THIS IS IMPORTANT It has been estimated that less than 5% of people can draw. To many people, the process of drawing seems mysterious and somehow beyond human understanding. This is a terrible and needless situation. This is like saying that before the Industrial Revolution, most people could not read or write, and so no one can ever learn to do so. Anyone who can hold a pencil and write legibly can learn to draw well, whether they are four years old or eighty years old. You just have to teach your brain how to move a pencil in the correct direction. This book will get you started. Don't think you can't do the exercises in this book because "you can't draw"! That's like not learning the alphabet because you can't read, or not learning to count because you can't do math!   DRAWING COMES BEFORE ART Most people think that drawing is art, but drawing is not art, although drawing does come before art, just as counting comes before math, and the alphabet comes before reading. BENEFITS TO DRAWING INCLUDE:

  • Increase the ability of your right brain, so you become whole- brained.
  • Increase the ability to perceive and solve problems with new solutions.
  • Have another means of communication through visual methods.
  • Gain self-confidence because you know you can draw.
  • Have a natural way to totally relax and feel blissfully happy.
DRAWING GIVES YOU A FULL BRAIN Learning to draw is important for everyone to do, not just children, because drawing exercises the right brain. Unfortunately, nearly everything you learned at school exercised only the left brain, which means that most schooling is a half-brained affair. THE ONLY FOUR STEPS TO ART: 1) Line Drawing. This book will teach you that. 2) Shading. 3) Color. 4) Painting. MOST 'LEARN TO DRAW' BOOKS ARE USELESS I remember when I was a child and wanted to learn to draw, and got a bunch of those "Learn to draw..." books. They were all worse than useless. I threw them out. Nearly all of them make you see a horse as a bunch of circles and oval sausages and squares somehow tied together. Then you fill in the 'missing' areas. Then you have to erase the parts of the circle that were never there in the first place. Then somehow redraw the areas that were not really circles to begin with. That's ridiculous! What they are trying to do is get you to see things that just aren't there. There is no part of a horse that is a perfect circle. And what happens when the animal turns a bit? It was not until I found some learn-to-draw-with-grid books that I finally learned to draw.   VECTOR DRAWINGS WILL NOT TEACH YOU Most "Drawing with Grids" books use what is called a vector, drawn by a computer. The problem is that the lines are not all the same, and most are too thick. Which side of the line do you follow when the line goes thick?   YOU DON'T WANT SMALL SQUARES You don't want to have to count which square you are working on. You want to intuitively know where you are at. If you draw enough grids with larger squares, after a while, your brain will learn to judge distances very well by itself.    LEONARDO DA VINCI USED GRIDS The aim of this book is to teach you how to draw accurate, realistic line drawings. Most interestingly, if you have ever wondered how the early art masters created such realistic paintings, many of which look almost like photographs, one of their secrets was that many of them used grids. Leonardo da Vinci was just one of the many artists of his time who used this method for developing an accurate outline of live subjects. Now you can too! 70 drawings on Quality, White paper, plus grids

About the Author Stephanie remembers when she was child she wanted to learn to draw, and got a bunch of those "Learn to draw..." books. She found they were all worse than useless and threw them out. The outline of a horse is the outline of a horse. There is no part of a horse that is a perfect circle. Animals and people are not geometric. They are composed of wondrous, artistic curves. A horse has nothing whatsoever to do with ovals or sausages! And what happens if the horse turns a bit? It was not until she found some learn-to-draw-with-grid books that Stephanie finally learned to draw. Now you can learn to draw, just as she did.

I used to draw quite a bit, and even would sit outside and draw under trees for hours on end. My parents saw this ability, and decided to buy me some "how to draw" books for one of my birthdays when I was young. I tried to draw in the ways they suggested, but I actually stopped drawing all together after highschool. I haven't drawn much of anything these days, but I sometimes feel the desire to draw mundane things when I see my young boys drawing things that interest them. So here comes a new book, with a new perspective that I have never heard of. Grids? Really? At first I remembered how awkward my books were that never helped develope my ability to draw, and I thought how this must be just another way to trick someone to buy a book to learn how to draw. It sounds like a sales hook to sell a book, does it not?Well, I decided to try the book anyway, as I needed to find a book to help my boys with their love for drawing as well as me. The book is well written, and the author keeps the book simple and to the point. There is no filler here; only some good guidance and thoughts to ponder on why we ALL should be drawing to a certain degree. Step by step, putting the correct way to hold a writing pencil as the one of the last bits of written instruction before you delve into the main part of the book. I found the written part of the book quite interesting, as the author has a unique perspective on the many areas involving drawing. Who knew. I didn't.The biggest part of this book is "practice". There are numerous objects, animals, and structures to draw, which are shown in a grid format to one side, and an empty grid to the opposite. This book could be considered a workbook, as it is intended for you to practice drawing for most of the duration and some "work" is needed to retrain your brain to see in a different way, but after a few drawings, it can get easier. I was planning on using this book for all three of us, but I think my boys want their own book to draw in, as they don't particularly like tracing paper.I'm eagerly anticipating the end of the book to see how my drawing ability, and perception has evolved.I'll be recommending this book to others too.

It is a book on how to really SEE your world. My 10 year old grandson was visiting when I got my copy of Stephanie's book - and "seeing the world" is definitely NOT a priority to his avid interest in skating, sports and video games. Nonetheless - I asked him if he would like to draw with me - but because he was more interested in going outside to skate, he gave me a reluctant - "oooookkkkkay - then can I go outside?"He sat (plopped) down, and we began to go through the method - and as soon as he saw the results? He was all about it! He forgot about skating (his passion) - and then proceeded to go through almost every diagram - his enthusiasm was contagious! We then spent several hours happily drawing our way through. When we were done he asked "Is there another book with sports and skaters in it?" When I told him that we can use the grids and this technique to do any picture he wanted, he was excited! This is a wonderfully simple book - of course, on how to draw. On another level, it offers essential but fun tools to assist in the areas of problem solving, communication and self-confidence.What I loved the most about it? This book is a pathway to clearing the mind and just enjoy the world around you.Oh - and your kids will love it too!

"Learn how to Draw" provides excellent summations of left and right hemisphere functions and howthis all relates to creativity,By developing the right hemisphere, for most individuals, this will help the left and right hemisphereto become more balanced. Solutions to problems can be resolved much more quickly due to the balanced brain & mind's topographical view of the situation as opposed to the dominant left hemisphere's strict linear analytical conditioning. Great explanations on using grid systems, to break down into smaller components, for more accurate detailed drawings. Similar to focusing on quadrants on a map. It certainly has made me look at my surroundings with more of an eyeto detail, with respect to relationships, comparisons and contrasts. Additionally, great suggestions and recommendations with lots of grids provided for practice. One can practice drawing images on the grids that are provided adjacent to each picture . Although I wasn't prepared with any HB pencils around, I just went ahead & did my first drawing of a horse with a pen and wow! This was completed within moments. I was quite amazed to see immediate & great results , especially for someone who doesn't draw. These simple techniques really do bring out the natural skill & talent to draw. Will be sharing this book with both my sons! Thank you Stephanie for simplifying a technique that seemed so complicated and that one would assume requires great skill.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A cold, suffocating read. By FlubberMunky1623 Rachel L. Coyne’s The Patron Saint of Lost Comfort Lake is a consistently bleak and haunting read. It just so happens this is the kind of story I most enjoy reading. The cover design of the novel (by the talented MSUM graduate Jamie Hohnadel Trosen) perfectly captures the grim tones of both the story and the people (most of whom are delightfully morally gray, at times) that find themselves caught up in it.The story centers around the lake and Jane, an alcohol abuser, a pill pusher, and single mother. Life for Jane is really, ultimately solemn at best: Like herself, her mother is addicted to pills, her father is nearing the end of his life from behind prison bars, and Jane sees her daughter much too rarely to reliably stabilize such a chaotic relationship. Not only does the daughter most likely feel a disconnect to Jane, but what was interesting to me was that Coyne explores the disconnect that mother Jane has with her own child. This is one of the many aspects that will draw a reader into this book; Coyne’s story is dark and hard to stomach at times, but her diction and writing style is eerily soothing, and while it takes a chapter or two to become invested into the happenings surrounding Jane, it eventually makes no sense not to keep reading. Coyne doesn’t write a depressing story for the sake of being depressing—there is real talent here, and everything that happens to Coyne’s characters feels appropriate and organic. The book itself is truly just awesome, it’s beautiful. It’s bound wonderfully, the text is simple, and the interior design actually SERVES the author’s story rather than distract the reader with a pretty picture. The antlers that embrace the heading of each chapter ties directly to Jane’s character, and the rural pine trees that separate each scene of the book grounds the Minnesota setting of the lake, a lake which is really a character all its own. This being said, I definitely look forward to Rachel Coyne's next work.~Jordan Dean Williams

Jane, the protagonist, is a deeply conflicted woman, struggling to balance her love for her daughter against the toll of years of despair and hard living. As the story builds, its characters become, not friends, exactly, but the sort one recognizes from the other end of the bar.Coyne has a gift for dialogue and setting a scene and the story is well told. An outstanding follow up to the author's earlier novel, Whiskey Heart.

The characters are compelling, distressing, and shed a migraine-inducing light on how people can become so self-destructive and lost. This is some great writing. If you've spent any time in the Mid-West, in a small town, or in a bar get ready to be transported.

To Scott, Paul and Mark, horror films are everything. The year is 1983, the boom of the video revolution, and Scott Bradley is seventeen, unemployed and on the dole. Drifting through life, he and his friends love nothing more than to sit around drinking, talking about girls, and watching horror movies. But things are about to change. As the ‘video nasty’ media storm descends, their desire to find a copy of the ultimate horror film – The Evil Dead – is going to lead them to the most significant days of their young lives. As the law tightens and their way of life comes under threat from all quarters, they come to learn what truly matters to them – and what doesn’t. A heartfelt story of friendship, loyalty and youthful rebellion, Dead Leaves is a darkly funny and brutally honest depiction of aimless life in a Midland town, and perfectly captures the impact those first few years of video had on a generation.

Dead Leaves By Andy Angel Last year's 'The Electric' by Andrew David Barker (previously reviewed on this blog) was a love letter to cinema and growing up in the 1980's. 'Dead Leaves' does much the same thing for Video Nasties - and does a grand job of it. It is 1983 and to Scott Bradley, just out of school, on the dole and heading for a life of factory drudgery and his friends Paul and Mark Horror Videos are the be all and all of everything. Nothing much else matters other than getting to see the next Nasty. To them, what really matters is getting hold of The Holy Grail of Video Nasties - The Evil Dead. This is a world of pokey little video shops and dodgy dealers in a time when the clampdown on Horror Videos was in full swing. This novella is also a story of friendship, of family and of growing up. Scott's dad wants him to get a job, constantly getting at him to fill in application forms for mundane (in Scott's mind) jobs when what he really wants is to go to film school. Anyone reading this book who was around at the time it is set will, as with 'The Electric' be taken back to a time when films weren't available 24/7. A time when you borrowed a film from the local video shop and had it for 1 day before returning it. The friends have a plan to make money - there is a chance to get a copy of The Evil Dead so they can make copies themselves and sell them on. The only real problem is that they need to find £60 to buy their copy (remember, this is 1983) Barker does a really good job of transporting the reader back to the early 80's (I was the same age as Scott in 1983 so I guess I know what I'm talking about) and his love of film shows through in what turns out to be another excellent story. I was looking forward to Dead Leaves from the moment I heard of it and it certainly lived up to my expectations. Now I can look forward to whatever Andrew David Barker comes up with next in the sure knowledge it will be well worth the wait.

Amidst the post-industrial landscape of the British midlands, the world of the independent VHS horror film has claimed the soul of teenager Scott Bradley. Under the looming spectre of a life spent working in the Chelful toy factory, Scott and his pals find meaning in the ever popular "I spit on your grave ", the Nazi exploitation flick "SS Experiment Love Camp" and the holy grail of video nasties, Sam Raimi's "The Evil Dead". Never far away lurks an hysterical right wing element that would bury these films and punish anyone found holding them. The author tackles complex emotions and ideas using concise and accurate prose. In telling a story that pre-dates digital culture, Barker manages to speak volumes about the internet without even mentioning it. That alone is pretty impressive. Well done.

A combination biography, and photobook, Achieving The Dream is a short book that will capture your heart. The Dream series will follow Andrea and me as we reach for and achieve our dreams. Achieving The Dream tells of Andrea’s sometimes sad and always interesting childhood. Then she tells about her affinity with animals and her dream to become a veterinarian. I included a selection of my best selling and favorite stock photographs. Now that Andrea has been graduated from homeschool, I'm looking forward to furthering my photography career. My dream is to get photographic assignments such as houses for Realtors, sell landscape prints, and maybe photograph portraits or weddings. This ebook is an effort to raise money for Andrea to go to college. There were several delays with her FASFA; by the time she got her award letter some expected financial aid funds had become depleted. We hope you find our book catchy enough to want to read more.

One of the most famous moments of the Sixties - and one which continues to this day to be grossly misconstrued, mistold, and loaded with undeserved meaning - is the night in July of 1965 when Bob Dylan played an electric set (or at least tried to play an electric set) at the Newport Folk Festival: an event after which, supposedly, the culture of the Sixties was never quite the same again.Even Dylan's most pre-eminent chronicler Sean Wilentz has mischaracterized this evening as the night when “[Alan] Lomax along with Pete Seeger led the old guard that objected to the blasts of white-boy electricity, including Dylan's.” Seeger biographer David Dunaway speaks of Dylan understanding that at Newport “the electric guitar meant a declaration of war” and that, intensely ambitious, he sought publicity by smuggling “rock into the citadel of folk music.”In this narrative, battle lines were drawn, a fight waged, and a revolution begun. The over-simplification is too attractive to resist. Our tribal memory absolutely yearns for Dylan's abbreviated, 15-minute performance to be a pivot point not just from acoustic to electric, but also from traditional to commercial, from topical to cynical, and from roots to revolution. We also want Newport to be a “citadel of folk music,”and to be comfortable with any number of other safe, easy assumptions. For this symbology to work, however, we need an “old guard” to rebel against, and a youthful “new guard” to do the rising up. We also need to believe that traditional acoustic music cannot be (and was not at that time already) commercial, that electric music can never be traditional, that electric music is always commercial, that the Newport Fest (only a few years old) represented some sort of “hallowed ground” of acoustic music, and that various other straight lines apply. They don't. In this book, critically-acclaimed author Edward Renehan examines how and why.

The author provides a significant amount of important background material to put the event into the proper context. In spite of the stories we may have heard over the years, Pete Seeger didn't hate electric guitars and he didn't want to stop Dylan's performance. As Renehan explains it, Seeger was concerned that the sound system was a mess, principally due to the combination of Dylan's sound system with the Festival sound. Even Dylan seemed disgusted with the sound quality. There was, however, a real battle going on between Albert Grossman, Dylan's manager and the eminent folklorist Alan Lomax. Their actual physical confrontation wasn't about electric music per se but about commercialism vs. tradition. Like any well written popular history this book made me feel as if I was there at Newport in '65 and behind the scenes as the events unfolded.

Debunking the Newport Myth By true britty The story goes that Dylan got booed off the Newport stage in 1965 for plugging in.The author digs thru the history to set the record straight. It has been set straight before, but this is the Audible version and an abbreviated one that doesn't come embedded in a longer history of Dylan. The audience booed when Dylan was on. Pete Seeger did threaten to wield an axe. Folklorist Alan Lomax and Dylan's manager Albert Grossman did trade blows at some point. But the why of the myth and the why of fact are not one and the same, says the author.Renehan does a good job giving background on the festival and its partipants. He says a lot in a very limited space, and stays true to his purpose to tell a more factual account. This is not Hunter S. Thompson mainlining dramatic prose. But the book is a good and precise little history. The narrator could have used some help with editing. Another sound editor would have removed the mouth smacking sounds. It happens all the time in audio recording and I didn't really care. But the narrator, if he is doing his own editing, might want to take those out next time.

2 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Short Discussion By Clark Johnson Very short discussion of the event and the cultural surroundings. The main point the author makes is that the booing of Dylan's electric performance was due to the bad sound, not the music.

PDF Ebook Russian Modernism: Cross-Currents of German and Russian Art, 1907-1917From Prestel

This book explores the direct connections and collaborations of German and Russian artists and the affinities between both countries' artistic development. Russian Modernism maps the Russian version of expressionism and puts it in the context of the history of 20th century art. Russian Modernism is dedicated to the radical modernist movements in Russian and German art during the early years of the 20th century. Their development was parallel and often intertwined. Artists such as Vasily Kandinsky or Alexej von Jawlensky are claimed by the Germans but remain Russian artists for the Russians. The Burluk brothers, who became celebrities of the Russian radical art scene, participated in the first exhibition of the Blauer Reiter. Russian artists travelled to Germany and lived there, while their German counterparts were aware of what was shown in Moscow exhibition halls. The diverse art movement "expressionism" was formed in Germany at the beginning of the 1910s and was given the name by the critic Herwarth Walden. Members of groups such as Die Brücke and the Blauer Reiter were initially influenced by the French Fauves movement, and their Russian contemporaries also tried to find new artistic truth in Paris, 'la Ville Lumière'. However, both in Germany and Russia the new French influence underwent radical transformation. Beautifully illustrated and designed, this book provides an insight into the work of Russian and German artists in the early years of the 20th century.

A Beautiful Introduction to Early Twentieth Century Russian Artists By Elliot Silvera The Neue Galerie in New York is known for its exhibitions and collection of early twentieth century German and Austrian art. This book is a catalogue of an interesting exhibit dealing with early Russian modernism and its relationship of German art of the period from 1907 to 1917. It highlights the works by both Russian and German artists. With the exception of Wasilly Kandinsky, all the other Russian names will be unfamiliar to most readers. The only similarity the two countries have is the French influence. While the German Expressionists looked to Henri Matisse and the Fauves, the majority of the Russian avant garde were mainly inspired by Paul Cezanne and their country's folk art.. The book has several interesting essays on several topics about Russian modernism from the Jack of Diamonds group of artists to Russians working in Munich to the work of the well known couple Natalia Goncharova and Mikhail Larionov. The book also discusses the unique Russian movements of Cubo-Futurism and Rayonism as well as the beginnings of non objective art with the works of Kandinsky and Kazimir Malevich. I really enjoyed the chapter on the Jack of Diamonds because it introduced me to a number of new artists including Petr Konchalovsky, Ilya Mashkov, Aristarkh Lentulov, Natan Altman, Aleksandr Kuprin, Boris Grigorev, and Robert Falk. After the essays are some ninety plates of paintings and works of paper which are arranged by subject matter(portraits, nudes, landscapes, urban scenes, still lifes, and abstract pieces). Throughout are Mashkov's still lifes, Kandinsky's Murnau landscapes, works in all genres by Goncharova, Larionov, and Konchalovsky, and German Expressionist pieces by Gabriele Munter, Erich Heckel, August Macke, and Ernst Ludwig Kirchner. One of the most intriguing paintings is Kandinsky's rare figurative portrait of his wife, Nina executed in 1917 when he dealt with abstract subjects. The catalogue ends with brief biographies of all the artists featured in the show (noticeably absent is Emil Nolde and Marc Chagall). Although I found the text well written, I wished for brief captions of the reproductions. As not a fan of complete non-objective art, the abstraction plate section was not my cup of tea. If you want to learn more about these rarely highlighted Russian artists, I strongly recommend this catalogue.

Gorgeous Book With Much Interesting and Unfamiliar Work By Anne Mills Enthusiasts of early 20th century art are likely to be fascinated by this book, which shows, and discusses, a lot of work that is not widely exhibited or reproduced, at least not in the US. The book is the catalog of an exhibit of the same title held at the Neue Galerie in New York. The reproductions are accompanied by a series of illuminating essays. The primary focus is -- as the title suggests -- on Russian art, with the German works shown serving as counterpoint. The exception here is Kandinsky, who, as one of the essays points out, is counted as Russian in Russia, but whose work is widely shown in exhibits of German modernism - there's lots of Kandinsky in this book. After seeing the exhibit and reading the book, it seems to me that the Russian/German connection was less powerful than the influence of French art on both German and Russian work. The book also brings out the powerful influence of Russian folk art on the painters of the teens. In any event, there are some stunning pictures in here that were completely new to me -- check out Grigoriev's "Portrait of M. Ya. Yasnaya", Khodasevich's "Persian Boy", and Lentulov's "Victorious Battle".''s

Excerpt from War and the Arme BlancheI have read with the greatest interest Mr. Childers's illuminating book "War and the Arme Blanche." My opinion of the subject with which it deals is already so well known throughout the army that I need not labour to say how entirely I agree with the author's main thesis; indeed, anyone who will take the trouble to read "Cavalry Training" (1904), will see that I anticipated the arguments which he has so ably developed. This being so, it is not surprising that I should view the regulations laid down in "Cavalry Training" (1907), with some concern.Let us consider briefly what the history of this question - the comparative value of steel weapons and firearms for Cavalry in war - is. Until within the last few years our Lancer regiments depended entirely on the lance and sword, while other Cavalry regiments depended almost entirely on the sword. This was inevitable because of the inaccuracy and short range of the smooth-bore carbine.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. How was the cavalry to respond, especially when its principal weapons, the sword and the lance, required very close range in order to wound? In 1910, Erskine Childers, a veteran of the 2nd Boer War, wrote this book to put forward a simple idea: the sword and lance were obsolete; attempts to close to lance and saber range were futile in the face of modern firepower; the proper weapons for modern cavalry were firearms, and the troopers should be expect to fight dismounted as often as mounted. He buttressed this with many examples from the Boer War, showing that the only times horse mounted soldiers achieved anything in combat was when they used rifles. 'Time for a change' was his motto, because EFFECTIVE cavalry was extraordinarily valuable. He was, of course, completely ignored, both in this book and its sequel German Influence on British Cavalry, which is also available online at [...]. As late as 1935, the British had horse cavalry, armed with sabers, who were, when the charge was sounded, to ride at the enemy "with the fixed intention of running him through" as Tom Wintringham pointed out in his New ways of warHorse cavalry as a fighting arm is gone, but the book remains valuable as a means of showing that sometimes, the future is easily visible, and that truth is frequently rejected because it makes people feel bad.

PREFACE "Rough and Ready” is presented to the public as the fourth volume of the " Ragged Dick Series," and, like two of its predecessors, was contributed as a serial to the " Schoolmate," a popular juvenile magazine. Its second title, "Life among the New York Newsboys," describes its character and purpose. While the young hero may be regarded as a favorable example of his class, the circumstances of his lot, aggravated by the persecutions of an intemperate parent, are unfortunately too common, as any one at all familiar with the history of the neglected street children in our cities will readily acknowledge. If " Rough and Ready " has more virtues and fewer faults than most of his class, his history will at least teach the valuable lesson that honesty and good principles are not incompatible even with the greatest social disadvantages, and will, it is hoped, serve as an incentive and stimulus to the young people who may read it. New York, Dec. 26, 1869.

Good Introduction to Medieval Europe By Tariq Mufti It was my first exposure to a detailed chronology of Europe's development into the Renaissance and the Reformation. The narration did occasionally stumble, and a second reading might be needed to remember all the names and emporers and popes, but it is still a good introduction.

Main exception is the nonsense about Islam - all academics must pay homage to the myth of the Moslem golden age. Nary a word about jihad, sex slavery, the slaughter, the eradication of far superior cultures by the Meccan moon cult. Further, ascribing 'advances' by non Moslems enslaved or dominated by Moslems is rather pernicious. There is precious little that Islam gave the world, beyond some astronomical observations, any 'civilization' was the result of the Dhimmis and conquered Jews, Christians, Berbers and Persians.

The Art Nouveau movement during 1890-1910 inspired a then-new design esthetic for everything from architecture and furniture to fine art and jewelry. It was characterized by the undulating, curvilinear lines found in peacock feathers, vines, flowers, windswept clouds and flowing waters. In this beautiful new paper doll book, artist Norma Lu Meehan expresses the grace that defines Art Nouveau with 20 exquisitely rendered for two elegant figures. The fashions include styles seen in paintings by artists such as Leon Bakst, fashion designers including Paul Poiret, Lucille, Jeanne Paquin and Fortuny; screen and stage costumes from My Fair Lady and Downton Abbey. This lovely paper doll book captures the elegance of Art Nouveau for collectors, fashion historians and those who appreciate art.

Art Nouveau Paper Dolls, by Norma Lu Meehan

About the Author With the encouragement of teachers of fashion illustration both in high school and at Parsons School of Design in Manhattan, Norma Lu Meehan realized her dream of drawing high fashion as a career. Following design school, Norma Lu returned to her hometown of South Bend, IN, and her next four decades saw in-house and free-lance positions as both illustrator and advertising director locally, in surrounding cities and Chicago. To keep up with the changing scene, she relied on fashion magazines, the New York Times and ongoing education with life, anatomy and portrait classes. When the use of advertising fashion illustrators ended, she was surprised and delighted to see that some illustrators had found a new outlet in the engaging world of paper dolls. So now she enjoys the camaraderie of other artists, collectors, and publishers. Beginning in the 1990s with Hobby House and Texas Tech University Press, Norma Lu is now happily at home with Paper Studio Press which has published her titles listed below. Her Texas Tech titles are currently available from paperdollreview.com including the costumes of Kent State: Collection by Design I and II and Victorian Wedding Dress in the United States, which depicts actual gowns from Texas and Northern Indiana along with descriptions of provenance. Other Paper Studio Press paper dolls by Norma Lu include Greta Garbo, Rhonda Fleming, Arlene Dahl, Margaret O Brien, Kate Middleton, A Palette of Paper Dolls, Art Nouveau Paper Dolls, Art Deco Paper Dolls and Little Ladies of Fashion.

Lovely nod to period artists, "Downton Abbey", and the golden age of paper dolls By Sheryl Knowles Ms Meehan's placement of the dolls on the cover harkens back to the golden age of paper dolls. Her painterly style is interesting, and I enjoy the pieces of decor she uses the decorate the pages of this book. I know she enjoys rendering museum-collection clothing into the paper doll media and found this venture into including garments from artwork quite interesting. I always appreciate it when an artist acknowledges the source of her renderings, as Ms Meehan never fails to do.

She is a master of historical research and accuracy in presentation. Her figures are beautifully proportioned and suited to the era of the fashions. Her fabric textures are amazingly realistic, yet not losing that very appealing painterly feel. This Art Nouveau book, I may say, is one of my favorites. (but I may well say that of any of her books in hand!) Art Nouveau, though during the Victorian Era has a line and flow that is not as fussy as some fashions throughout the time period. She has chosen designers and designs that suit the title theme...and beautifully done throughout.

Collection of Stock Photos By Daryl Lee Spiewak The author provides a nice collection of Stock photos to inspire others as well as to highlight his photography skills. There are no captions or details on how the photos were made, which limits its usefulness. I gave it three stars because it provides examples of what a good stock photograph looks like.

Read Ebook Pieter Bruegel the Elder: Fall of the Rebel Angels, by Tine Meganck

Pieter Bruegel the Elder: Fall of the Rebel Angels is the first comprehensive book on one of the most cherished masterpieces in the collection of the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium. Bruegel's dizzingly complex "Fall of the Rebel Angels" (1562) is presented in this lavishly illustrated volume in microscopic detail, and placed in its wider context in the texts, which argue that, with this painting, Bruegel turned a traditional devotional theme into an innovative commentary on his own time. Many of the angels in Bruegel's scene are hybrids of natural and artificial forms, just as the curiosity cabinets of the time would juxtapose "naturalia" and "artificialia" for the connoisseur, connecting the painting to early modern European cultures of knowledge and collecting.
