A rare and fascinating account of one of modern and contemporary painting’s most powerful creative minds

In the course of a career covering more than sixty years, Frank Auerbach has established a still growing international reputation for his paintings of friends, family, and surroundings in north London, with his vigorous, precise brushwork, and for his insistence on working until the picture emerges, free of all “possible explanations.” Catherine Lampert, an art historian and the curator of a major Auerbach retrospective at the Kunstmuseum Bonn and Tate Britain, has had unique access to the artist since 1978, when she became one of his sitters. Drawing on her conversations with Auerbach and from published and archival interviews, she offers rare insight into his professional life, working methods, and philosophy, as well as the places, people, and experiences that have shaped his life. These include arriving in Britain as a seven-year-old refugee from Nazi Germany in 1939, finding his way in the London art world of the 1950s and 60s, his friendships with Leon Kossoff, Francis Bacon, and Lucian Freud, among others, and his approaches to looking and painting throughout his working life. The text is complemented by illustrations of Auerbach’s paintings and drawings as well as by images from his studio and personal photographs that have never been published before. 100 illustrations, 78 in color

Indispensable for anyone interested in Auerbach or his work By caetano-sf Indispensable if you are interested in Auerbach's work, which seems under-appreciated here in the U.S. Well-written by someone who has known the painter for decades and posed often for him. Auerbach is a truly masterful conversationalist, and it is a joy to find an artist who expresses himself so beautifully.

As the years go by, as more and more official documents, hitherto classified as ‘Top Secret’, are released to the public, the full story of espionage in the Second World War is being revealed. No-one is better qualified to assess the importance of the released documents and to speculate upon the contents of those that have mysteriously disappeared from, than the bestselling author Charles Whiting. Over thirty years a prolific military historian he has met and interviewed a huge number of Nazi and Allied survivors who were involved in what has come to be known as “The War in the Shadows”. In this fascinating book he brings together such information as has been made public with all that he has gleaned from his in-depth investigations over the years. The result is an extraordinary and gripping story combining great cunning with staggering incompetence. ‘Hitler’s Secret War’ outdoes the best spy novel and demonstrates yet again that ‘fiction’ cannot hold a candle to ‘fact’ when coming from the pen of a master of Charles Whiting’s stature. 'A fascinating insight into the hidden war. I learned something new on every page.' - Tom Kasey, best-selling author of 'Trade Off'. Charles Whiting is the author of numerous history books on the Second World War. Under the pen name of Leo Kessler he also wrote a series of bestselling military thrillers, including ‘Guns at Cassino’ and ‘Valley of the Assassins’. Endeavour Press is the UK’s leading independent publisher of digital books.

Detour on the D String: Candid Musings of a Violinist Trapped on a Desert Island, by Erika Joy Syroid

About the Author Erika Joy Syroid is a violinist, a child of the universe, a world traveler, an accomplished musician and teacher, not to mention drop dead gorgeous. Her global travels, her amazing career and her story is a ride that few could ever imagine. Erika was born in Richland, Washington in i950 and moved to Montana, "Big Sky Country" at the tender age of six years old. Talk about down to earth?! She attained her musical degree at the University of Montana and attended the world famous Mozarteum in Salzburg, Austria. Eventually, her travels brought her back to her birthplace, the state of Washington (Seattle, to be exact) where she was inspired to write Detour on the D String. In 1979, Erika had moved to Las Vegas, NV with a small child and an immense amount of talent and determination. She had no trouble digging in and finding work. She was sought after as a performer and teacher, giving lessons to so many talented kids who have excelled in the arts and have carved their own pathway to success. Playing, performing and sometimes traveling with such artists as Diana Ross, Frank Sinatra, Lionel Richie, Rod Stewart, Don Henley and Tony Bennett is quite a life. Erika is inspired and loves all types of music, from Hendrix rock to classical Bach. Oh... and yes, she can play it also. Detour on the D String is an inspiring story of life, love, pain, heartache, recovery and accomplishment. Erika resides in Las Vegas now, playing violin at the world famous Palazzo Resort with Bob Anderson, "Frank the Man, the Music." Mr. Anderson is the quintessential Frank Sinatra impersonator. Just as she played so beautifully with The Chairman of the Board, she now delivers the notes for Mr. Anderson. written by Robby Robinson FREEZEFRAME LV 2015

By george lehrfeld A journal about the ups and downs of a life devoted to music. Beautifully written in a stream of consciousness voice with stories galore about performing and hanging out with many notables of the Entertainment World from Sinatra to Bennett, Anka to Rawls. Pictures of the great natural beauty of Montana - a veritable feast for the eyes. But I said downs also and they are heart-wrenching but inspiring as the book leaves a positive message suggesting that if you really do what you love you will rise above it all. And the color of the coffee-table style pages is lovely. Highly Recommended!

SO, YOU ALWAYS WANTED TO BE A WRITER. YOU MIGHT WANT TO RECONSIDER. Robert Markland always wanted to be a writer, but he'd only published two short stories over the years. When he learns about a writers' commune in Southern Indiana informally known as the "monastery of writers" he believes it will provide his best, last chance at literary success. Markland, in his 40s, leaves his wife and two children in Omaha, Neb., and moves to the commune where he discovers a disparate group of writers -- and some dark secrets behind the mysterious origins of the "monastery of writers.""...a story of dreamers, doers and an America content to settle for commercialization...."--Ted Evanoff, Business editor, Memphis Commercial Appeal. "... brings us deep into the world of literary effort ... a look behind the curtain."--Michael J. Brien, MFA, Southern New Hampshire University, College of Online and Continuing Education; Former Editor, Amoskeag: The Journal of Southern New Hampshire University. "A self-absorbed amateur writer embarks on a quest to find out if he has genuine talent or not ... a story that is about writers and for writers ... insights about the art as well as tributes to successful writers." --Ruth Holladay, former Features Editor, The Indianapolis Star.

Review NUVO Newsweekly (Indianapolis)"I fell in love with the book's tagline: So, you always wanted to be a writer. You might want to reconsider. So mysterious, slightly ominous. Genre lines blur, but I read enough to find a nugget, some tiny world of truth in most works of fiction. Abe Aamidor's newest piece is full of them."The Commercial Appeal (Memphis)"Intent on becoming a novelist ... Robert Markland attends a writing seminar in Omaha hosted by an author who picks him out of the audience and asks, 'Why do you want to be a writer?'Markland can't voice a single reason. This is one of the surprises in 'Monastery of Writers,'' a nicely paced novel about life in our times by Indianapolis author Abe Aamidor." Listen to an interview with the author on the Indianapolis public radio station: Here's the link - wfyi.org/programs/the-art-of-the-matter/radio/indy-folk-western-mystery-writers-monastery- and I come on at 34 minutes, 30 seconds. Thanks.

From the Author Beyond the psychological study of the main protagonist and the suspense behind discovering the true origins of the "Monastery of Writers," there are informed analyses of famous writers such as John Updike, Alice Munro, John Cheever, John Gardner, Jonathan Franzen and other notables, plus references to quality literary journals such as The Gettysburg Review, Tin House, Ploughshares and others.

About the Author Abe Aamidor is the author or co-author of six non-fiction books, including "Chuck Taylor, All Star: The True Story of the Man behind the Most Famous Athletic Shoe in History" (Indiana University Press, 2006); "At the Crossroads: Middle America and the Battle to Save the Car Industry" (ECW Press, 2010); and "Media Smackdown: Deconstructing the News and the Future of Journalism" (Peter Lang, 2013). 2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. This is a good read. The writing keeps the story moving along By Townley Monastery of Writers focuses on the events of one year in the life of Robert Markland, an aspiring writer who has experienced modest success in publishing a few short stories. He leaves his wife and two teen-age children to join a group of similarly searching souls in the monastery of writers, an ad hoc group of writers, poets, artists, who reside in a rural Indiana community, in the erstwhile, world-famous dome-shape structure, which adorns the cover of the book.In the opening chapters, Markland quickly discovers and experiences freedom of his earlier youth as he explores the places and people of the local community and the communal lifestyle of living in the monastery of writers. Along the way, he writes, critiques, meets the eccentric, the ordinary, those seeking to exploit the mission of the monastery, and he continues to maintain a somewhat stilted relationship with his wife and children, who seem to be thriving very well without him, as well as unofficially adopt a surrogate family in the local community. On a mission to find one of the original creators of the Monastery of Writers; a past professor at Indiana University, with his own history and anguish, and his return to the monastery of writers, Markland learns something about himself. This is a good read. The writing keeps the story moving along. Day-today descriptions of the ordinary and the extraordinary are well executed without overwriting prose, over-describing events; the economy of prose never distracts the reader from the main story line, and intriguing themes evolving throughout the book. The many references to other writers and genres are not artificially imposed within the story, but rather contribute to the narrative style of this writer as he attempts to debunk or demystify the art and practice of writing.

Anyone who has tried to be a creative professional can relate to the issues raised by Aamidor in his novel. At it's core, it's about seeking your muse to get on track with a successful career. The novel centers around a writer who leaves his family behind and joins a writers' commune. He strains old relationships as he tries to forge new ones all the while struggling to find inspiration. From my perspective, the novel is about relationships and there are many to discover in the somewhat remote Indiana setting. The main character reminds me of the palette lever controlling the escapement wheel of a clock mechanism. Forward, then back, then forward again. Will the writer ever find the inspiration he needs? Does he make incremental progress toward his goal of being a writer? I won't spoil it. Read the book and see.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Who says they don't write them like that anymore By Albanypark A story with a beginning, middle and end, and a riddle solved at the end? Who says they don't write them like that anymore. This book is an unusual look into the sometimes mysterious, sometimes insular, even smug world of literary fiction - writers who write for the sake of art, I guess. There are good guys here (meaning sincere and talented), bad guys (meaning talented but not necessarily sincere), and really bad guys, who want to commercialize a successful "alternative lifestyle" venture that is the "monastery of writers." I like that the book avoids abject stereotypes, and the main protagonist is quite a complex individual whose personal honesty gets in the way of his far-fetched dreams.

Trust no-one. Including yourself.

A dark, seductive world of paranoia, deceit and conspiracy unravels as multiple narrator's lives intersect in a town shadowed by Montana Roja, a volcano on the island of Tenerife. Tantric Mountain is a compelling glimpse into one man's journey from a pitiful existence to success beyond his wildest dreams.

But nothing is as it seems and no-one can be trusted.

* "It is like the Bourne Identity meets Shantaram..." - Amazon Reviewer *

The moment everything changed

Matt Renshaw returns from his daily run up Montana Roja, a volcano on the island of Tenerife. He opens the door of his cheap, rented apartment to discover people inside and a life he does not recognise. His new girlfriend is flawless, he has written a bestselling novel and, for the first time in years, there is money in his bank account.

Matt’s dreams have come true but he remains obsessed with Katya, the love of his previous life. Terrified of returning to his past yet unable to maintain the façade of who he is supposed to be, he loses his new girlfriend, Lynn, and finds himself unable to complete a follow-up novel. Embroiled in confusion, jealousy and the familiar darkness of binge drinking, Matt follows his heart, pursuing Katya and the torment she always brings.

Life is almost perfect as Matt Renshaw surrenders to this new reality, embarking on a journey of sexual discovery, enlightenment and alcoholic abandon. He lures both Katya and Lynn back to him, using grand gestures and elaborate schemes. Then through a chance encounter with Nikolas Remano he uncovers a secret he could never have imagined.

* "My finger flew through this book in a mini bush fire infused with a desperate need to discover what happens next." - Ian Hutchinson, Author & Australian Educator of the Year *

"Great elements from many different genres - suspense, mystery, erotica"

Tantric Mountain is a raw literary suspense that scratches beneath the surface of one man's psyche, revealing the turmoil of a troubled childhood, alcoholism and paranoia.

Matt Renshaw loses himself in a world of sexual fantasy, his obsession with tantric sex and his desire to experience cosmic euphoria. Interspersed between Matt's sexual exploits is a narration by Nikolas Remano, a man on a mission to track subversive bloggers.

Part conspiracy theory, part psychological thriller, Tantric Mountain is an adult novel that explores dark places with refreshing vulnerability and charm.

Tantric Mountain, by B C Hook

About the Author Bradley Hook is an author, writer, digital designer and wave-rider (not necessarily in that order). His work has been featured on the covers of several international magazines and his first book, Surfing Life Waves, was published in December 2012. Surfing Life Waves is a philosophy based on elements of the surfing experience and has received praise for its uplifting message and positive perspectives. Tantric Mountain, his second book, was released in October 2015 and explores a dark, seductive world of conspiracy, paranoia, and lies. Multiple narrators compete for the stage in a story that lures the reader toward a gripping climax that will leave you wanting more. His forthcoming novel, Eve and the Tree, is the story of a lone traveller who becomes entranced by a bejewelled tree he discovers in a forest in India. Brushed with magic realism, romance and philosophical musings, this book explores the road less travelled. Returning to all things oceanic, Bradley authored and narrated a series of children's books called Beachy Creatures. Brad lives beside the ocean in New Zealand, with his partner Geniya and daughter Anastasia. His creative process involves long walks, dictation and two women - one in Sri Lanka and the other in the Philippines. More about that in a forthcoming blog post. When not writing fiction, Bradley helps organisations and individuals tell their stories, using the best possible mediums and technologies. He has worked with some of Australia and New Zealand's most prestigious organisations, thought leaders and celebrity speakers on innovative digital projects.

Disturbing, vulnerable, paranoid By Chris Harold This book drops you into several different worlds, revealing characters who all dealing with their own vulnerabilities and hangups. Sometimes cryptic, it keeps you guessing right to the last minute.Tantric Mountain will leave you with more questions than answers. Matt Renshaw has it all - is this a reflection on how we don't appreciate what we have until it is gone? What is reality? Are we all pawns in some conspiracy or game? Or is this simply a journey into one man's paranoid mind?Good writing. Don't buy if you like your stories straight and easy.

The rawness and beauty of the writing places you firmly inside the characters heads and gives you the unedited flow of thoughts, conscious and semi-conscious. The descriptions are so vivid they re-create the feel/vision/smell/energy the main characters are experiencing. It left me wanting more.

The story is of a strange mystery of the main character suffering from some sort of amnesia from his past. He doesn't remember the girlfriend he lives with, only the girl that he wishes. Yet he manages to pretend he knows what's going on with his present. I stopped and wondered whether he was supposed to be suffering from some sort of mental schizophrenia. He wants both lives, but in the end he takes an unexpected turn. A very interesting story, and very steamy at times. I would recommend this book.

In late 1983, looking for the subjects and locations that would bring the desolate landscape of the American West to life for his iconic film Paris, Texas, German filmmaker Wim Wenders took his Makina Plaubel 6 x 7 camera on the road. Driving through Texas, Arizona, New Mexico and California, Wenders was captivated by the unique, saturated, colorful light of the vast, wild landscape of the American West--even in the 20th century, a land associated with cowboys and outlaws, and suffused with the mythology of the frontier. The series he produced, Written in the West, was first exhibited in 1986 at the Centre Pompidou in Paris, and first published in 2000.Roughly three decades later, in this expanded edition, Wenders adds 15 new images of the sleepy town that gave the movie its name--though no footage was ever actually shot there. Made with a Fuji 6 x 4.5 camera, the new photographs are poetic documents of an abiding fascination and a search for personal memories. Together, they add an essential new chapter to Wenders' classic Written in the West, now Revisited.Over the past four decades, through films like Paris, Texas (1984), Wings of Desire (1987), Buena Vista Social Club (1999) and Pina (2011), Wim Wenders (born 1945) has distinguished himself as one of the leading lights of New German Cinema and one of the great directors in contemporary film. Wenders has had an equally distinguished career in photography; his photographs are exhibited and collected internationally.

Review (Written in the West, Revisited) evokes desolate scenes in vibrant color, creating images that simultaneously suggest narrative and cancel it out... This volume serves as a welcome reminder of Wenders' prodigious talents. (Jeff Jackson Fanzine)This is a book of pictures about light and space; it is refreshing to see how simple, direct and enjoyable photography for the sake of photography can be. (Tom Leininger Photo-Eye Blog)a peaceful book full of still images (Owen Campbell American Suburb X)it is enigmatically, exquisitely shot, nearly perfect in its longing (Rebecca Bengal vogue.com)Titled Written in the West, the images demonstrate the same fascination with the area's vibrant, light saturated vistas and vast expanses of wild landscape as the film itself, and make for compelling viewing both as a supplement to the film and in their own right. From the most disturbing mind in modern horror, Edward Lee, comes four stories of extreme perversion and visceral horror.

THE STICK WOMAN - Priscilla has been held hostage, physically mutilated, and fed feces for years. And her situation is about to get much, much worse.

SHIT-HOUSE - How bad is the world around you? How much worse could it get? How far would you go to fix it?

THE USHERS - They are always there - somewhere in the background and just out of sight. A force of violence and lust. They are the ushers...

THE SEA-SLOP THING - June needs a new job - and she's found it, along with something from the deepest depths of the sea.

This short collection gives a good overview of various kinds of stories that Mr. Lee is known for. "The Stick Woman" is dark, bleak, and over-the-top disgusting. "The Sea-Slop Thing" gives the lighter side of the gross-out and contains some of the author's trademark explicit and unnatural sex scenes. What really got me excited about Terra Insanus are the reprints of the hard to find linked stories "Sh*t-house" and "The Ushers." These pieces are not typical of Edward Lee, but they seem to be his most personal. These angry and nihilistic stream-of-consciousness tales are just as effective and unsettling as when I first read them years ago. Unfortunately they have been updated a bit with some modern references (I hate when authors feel they have to do this), but they have lost none of their impact. Obviously fans will be getting this regardless, but new readers should do themselves a favor and discover the different facets of a modern master of horror. 5 stars (obviously!).

From "The Horror Fiction Review" By Christine So, on the same day, I read this whole book and watched that Blackfish documentary about the orcas … on top of other events in the news. You know what I did then? I turned off the television, stepped away from the internet, and spent the rest of the evening cuddling with my kitties.Wow, we are an awful species. I mean, we go out of our way, WAY out of our way, to be vile. To commit atrocities that by rights should be unimaginable. And we do it a lot. A LOT a lot.I’m telling you, as fun as most Edward Lee books can be – for those values of fun involving infernal torment, otherworldy abominations, and outrageously hilarious depravity – Terra Insanus is 75% not that.25% yes; the last story, “The Sea-Slop Thing,” is classic Lee at his weird-sextastic gooshiness. Thankfully. How wrong is it to be RELIEVED to see a story about a lady who starts off doing something wildly inappropriate with a huge sausage from the deli where she works and goes on to find herself confronting a squelchy horror from beyond the deep?Yet, there it was, and I was glad and relieved. Because the 75% prior to that was mighty damn bleak and altogether horrifying in a much-too-real way. Those vile atrocities that should be unimaginable, which we inflict and commit upon each other at a dismayingly regular basis, get a harsh spotlight of attention.Well, okay, “The Stick-Woman” isn’t … uh … no, it IS that nasty, a tale of a woman held prisoner by a husband who goes far beyond any sane definition of abusive. But at least that one has more of a buffer, more of that only-a-story buffer.“Sh*t House” and “The Ushers,” on the other hand … two fit-together pieces of a warped mirror casting fragmented reflections of the worst of the worst … part stream-of-consciousness, part uncomfortably autobiographical-seeming, part ripped-from-the-headlines … stuff like this (not Lee’s writing, but the subject matter and the fact of the truth of the subject matter) really can make a person think an extinction event can’t come soon enough.Yeah. Bleak. Powerful, dark, despairing, and bleak. Even the diabolical brushes and undertones in “The Ushers” don’t allow for much fantastical wiggle-room. If anything, it serves to twist the knife. We can go on all we want about how the devil made us do it, but deep down we all know better.

Harper seems to have that certain something - you know, that exceptional ability some authors seem to have been blessed with by the divine grantor of muses - they can somehow manage to reach right into your mind and grab your attention completely in the first few lines of the book. Yep, Harper has that in spades! And she has once again demonstrated her exceptional talent brilliantly in the fourth and final installment of her beguilingly seductive Black Series. And yes, I said series and in this case, serial so to truly enjoy this story, you need to read all four books in the order in which they were released. The first three books do include cliffhangers but it is so worth the wait! Did I say wait? Yikes! There's no waiting! All four books are already available, so enjoy! The story is exciting, entertaining, addictive, compelling, riveting, enticing, arousing, sensual and steamy. Oh, and did I say mention hot? No? Well, it's hot, hot, hot! The dialog is smart, intelligent, witty, exceptionally well written and flows effortlessly. The characters are charismatic, well developed, engaging, captivating, intriguing and sexy as sin. Calvin Black is handsome, charming, intelligent and wealthy. He owns the exclusive Club Addictions in New York City and he's King in his little corner of the world. Yep, he's a smooth operator and he has it all, anything and anyone he desires - except her - the one that got away. Use em and lose em - that's his philosophy! He will never allow himself to be hurt ever again! That certainly taught him a lesson! But was it the right lesson? I guess we'll see because there she is - the one, the only, beautiful Sophie Bennett - the one that got away. And suddenly, she's right here in his club - his honeypot - and she's with another man. Nope, never going to happen - that schmuck, Wade Foster, can't have her! It's been years since he's seen her but he still feels it, feels her, deep in his gut, his heart and his soul. He's finally found her and he intends to have her! He won't let her get away again. She may not know it yet, but she still belongs to him. He always gets what he wants - because he just takes it! And Calvin Black wants Sophie Bennett! Oh my! But what will Sophie have to say about it, especially after he's already betrayed her once? He broke her heart and she hasn't been able to be with any man since Calvin. Once a cad, always a cad - right? Maybe but maybe not... Sophie has a plan. Huh? That doesn't sound good! She wants to see if Calvin means it when he says he wants only her. She needs to know if he's truly changed. It's a good plan, right? Not! Her good plan may turn into a complete nightmare - for her! It finally becomes apparent that her player, nice-guy boss, Wade Foster, may not be as nice as he portrays himself to be. In fact, he's quite deceitful and manipulative. And it seems he's not quite ready to give up the chase for Miss Sophie Bennett. Oh my! Just what in the world is he up to anyway??? What's a girl to do? Oh my goodness gracious! Things are seldom what they seem! My Dad always told me - believe none of what you hear and only half of what you see. Sounds like very good advice for Calvin and Sophie but will they take it??? Never fret, folks, the devil always gets his due and Calvin can be quite devilish! Better watch out Wade Foster! No spoilers from me but I will say this.... Handsome playboy club owner-check! Beautiful innocent almost accountant-check! Lies, betrayal, a few surprising plot twists, some nasty mind games and a pesky deceitful boss-check! Heated attraction, fiery passion, sweet romance and some steamy dreamy sex-you bet! Hubba! Hubba! I can hardly wait to see what Kelly Favor has in store for us next!!! Deliciously cute, seriously sexy, completely captivating and delightfully entertaining !!! Fabulous entertainment and an awesome read!

By Lissa I received this book for an honest review. This book picks up just where part 3 left us hanging, Calvin has a bomb dropped on him and Sofie is caught off guard herself by what she's hearing. Oh my Mr. Black...the roles are reversed will you handle the situation any better or repeat Sofie's mistakes? Sofie will having the shoe on the other foot help disolve the last of your mistrust and move forward with Calvin?Since book one I've been rooting for these two to work through their issues and find their HEA. It's bad enough they are battling their past but others have to continue to try to meddle for their own selfish reasons. Wade rubbed me the wrong way from the beginning and at this point he's the slimeball I love to hate! The final installment in this series this book wraps everything up and left me with no unanswered questions but still wouldn't complain if we got more Mr. Black in the future! This is not a standalone but is the end to a series I highly recommend you read, there is no cliffhanger for his final part!

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. I love a HEA and Calvin and Sophie finally get theirs! By Romance Reader The conclusion to the Black series was worth the wait. Despite someone trying to sabotage their relationship they now know it's worth it to fight for each other. At one point Sophie still has some doubts about Calvin. She wants to trust him but someone is feeding on her insecurities trying to break them apart. We finally learn who is trying to tear them apart and why. We also learn that karma is a bitch!Calvin and Sophie finally get their HEA. My only complaint is that I wish there would have been more to the HEA. I know this is a novella but a few more pages to expand on their HEA wouldn't have hurt.As much as I enjoyed this series I personally would have liked to read it as one book. I didn't feel it was necessary to break it up into 4 parts. I would pay more money for one book and probably would not have read it at all if it had not been provided to me for an honest review.I would recommend this series to anyone who likes a little mystery/suspense with their romance and steamy sex!

However, the story was too crude for me to get through and the plot was obviously cliche. Now I rarely stop reading a book, but I couldn't continue with the story after the third sex scene occurred in a matter of 11 chapters and the main characters had only met once for less than 5 mins.Reapers suck the souls from the living and dead; while Keepers save souls from the evil Reapers. Jack Walker is the son to the Empress and Emperor making him heir to the Reaper high leadership. He would like nothing more than to live his life for himself and away from his overbearing mother. Jack is sent to destroy the Chosen One, who is reported to be the youngest child of the Estmond Clan. However, meeting the "One" proves to be strange as he finds himself feeling a connection which can't be good for a Reaper where a Keeper is concerned. Lucy Mae Estmond is just trying to get over he fathers passing, but as a Keeper she has the duty to keep souls safe. Then her father appears to her as a new soul for her to keep with a message letting her know she is the Chosen One. Lucy hasn't a clue what that means or what to do with that info, so she begins to uncover the prophecy. Lucy also finds her life is now in more danger as she is no longer just a Keeper, but the one that could bring an end to the Reapers. Now if she could get rid of this pesky connection and feelings for a certain arrogant Reaper.Overall, I can only fairly judge the book based on how far I read, but I forced myself to read until the main characters interacted, which took 9 chapters to make that happen. The language was too foul, almost overly so. Now I know people cuss, I'm not naive, but I really hate f-bombs being used so frequently. Then the perspectives changed up randomly to another character, which threw me. I really just kept waiting for the story to get going and instead Jack kept having sex again and again, but not with Lucy. Getting to the end of chapter 11 was hard and I finally decided the book wasn't worth my time. So if you're willing to put up with foul language, a slow paced plot, sex, and probably a cliche Romeo and Juliet Type Plot-line, Then you could try this book, but I could not finish it and have deleted it.------Read more of my reviews at: http://heyitwasfree.blogspot.com/------

Sometimes it felt like this book was written by a teenage boy. To describe how a person looked they where always "hot", not really telling us much. I would probably read the next book just to see how things develops between Jack and Lucy. Hopefully it will get better.

Gemma has a chance to see the new store Rory now manages, the Lucky Dog Boutique. She is quite interested when sees how unique and quaint Destiny is – the town is totally absorbed in superstitions – all of them. Not only does Gemma love the town, but the town loves her or at least two men in town do. However, when one of those men turn up dead, she finds herself the prime suspect in the murder. Suddenly, Destiny isn’t looking all that sweet anymore.Rory and her faithful dog, Pluckie, are beyond shocked when they discover one of Gemma’s suitors dead in the park. It was only the previous night when Gemma had a public argument with the deceased. Now, Rory finds herself in the predicament of proving her friend’s innocence. Unfortunately, the man she’s very attracted to is the lead detective on the case and wants her to stay far away from it.I enjoyed my return to Destiny. It’s a cute town filled with different superstitions and quite a bit of information about them for the readers. I had no idea there were so many different superstitions out there. It fascinated me to read about them.Rory is becoming a favorite character of mine. I think it’s realistic how she can’t totally forget her dead fiancé. I want to see her begin a new relationship with the detective, but I think the slowness and “getting to know you” adds to the reality of such a situation. She is a bit too involved in the investigation, but her determination stems from seeing her best friend being accused of the crime. I did think the police focusing on Gemma is a bit much since there is no hard evidence against her, but it worked to keep the plot going. I have to admit, I was totally taken by surprise to see who the culprit turned out to be.I’m becoming a big fan of Linda O. Johnston’s books. I really want to sink my teeth into her backlist. This is a clever story with realistic and well-developed characters. The mystery keeps readers guessing. I can’t wait for my next trip to this town.FTC Disclosure: The publisher and NetGalley provided me with a copy of this book to review for this blog tour. This did not influence my thoughts and opinions in any way. All opinions expressed are my own.

Johnston did a good job of casting suspicion on multiple characters By Jen @ booksthathook dot com * This review first appeared on Books That Hook on December 3, 2015*I received a free copy of this book from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.*KNOCK ON WOOD is the second book in the Superstition Mystery series by Linda O. Johnston.Knock on Wood is another book I received a review copy of through Netgalley, but didn’t get it done in time and ended up reading the paperback version. I’m sure it won’t be the last book I read this way; I have a huge backlog of Netgalley books and I much prefer paper over digital.Anyway, this cozy mystery is about Rory, a pet boutique manager, who lives in a strange town called Destiny where most everyone believes in superstitions. Even those who don’t believe pretend that they do so they can capitalize off of it with the tourists. It isn’t clear if any of the things that happen are actually the result of any superstitions. So, while I group this with the paranormal cozies because of the theme, it isn’t necessarily paranormal. Nevertheless, the premise of the Superstition Mystery series is original and interesting.Rory’s friend, Gemma, comes to visit. Gemma’s ex-boyfriend follows her to Destiny, which becomes a problem due to other men competing for Gemma’s attention. Gemma is asked to stay in Destiny and take over the bookstore next door to Rory’s pet boutique. When one of the men who is interested in Gemma is murdered, Gemma becomes the main suspect. Once again, it is up to Rory to prove someone’s innocence. She takes it upon herself to find out who the real killer is. I thought Linda O. Johnston did a good job of casting suspicion on multiple characters. I was kept guessing until the end.My reservations about this series, as expressed in my review of Lost Under Ladder, haven’t changed significantly. I still feel like there is a conflict between what Rory says and does. She claims to be skeptical about superstitions. Yet, her behavior is like that of a believer. Her constant questioning about if everything she encounters or experiences is related to a superstition gets tiresome. I guess this was the author’s way of working in a lot of different superstitions. I just didn’t like how it seemed to conflict with Rory’s claim that she didn’t believe in superstitions. If she didn’t believe in them, why was she obsessing about them all the time? Also, the book takes a long time to get to the murder–96 pages. I can’t say I was bored; I just didn’t know why it was taking so long to get to the murder I knew was bound to happen.Another complaint I had is about Gemma and Rory’s relationship. Rory says Gemma is her “bff” but she doesn’t seem to know Gemma well or communicate very well with her.One of the best aspects of Knock on Wood is the budding relationship between Rory and Justin. It is refreshing to see a romance that takes time to grow. It’s kind of hot and cold, in part because Rory doesn’t know if she is ready to move on after losing her fiance.I’m not sure if I would read another book in this series, but I don’t want to discourage anyone else from reading it. If you can get past Rory’s annoying repetitiveness and obsession with superstitions, you will probably enjoy Lost Under Ladder and Knock on Wood. The mystery is solid and the setting is unique.

By Sapphyria Warning ~~ Potential Book 1 spoilers. When Rory's bff, Gemma, abruptly comes to town to visit earlier than expected, she's happy but knows that something is up. Gemma broke up with her boyfriend, Frank, and just needed to get out of L.A. and away from him. This would be all fine and dandy except Frank follows Gemma to Destiny. In the short time that Gemma is in town, she has caught the eye of two local eligible bachelors. She's also caught the evil eye of Frank who is quasi-stalking Gemma hoping to convince her to come back to L.A. with him. Frank's plans crash and burn when she's offered a managerial position at the bookstore previously owned by two characters from Book 1.The relationship between Gemma and one of her suitors gets heated one evening, at a restaurant, and in front of half of the town. When he's found dead early the next morning, Gemma becomes one of many suspects in his murder. Rory knows beyond a shadow of doubt that Gemma isn't to blame and, much to their dismay, takes it upon herself to help local law enforcement figure it out.I really like both books in the Superstition Mystery series. I'm not superstitious but I still find the various superstitions plastered throughout the book to be fascinating. I already knew about some of them (walking under ladders, breaking mirrors, opening umbrellas inside, knocking on wood) but I'd never heard of most of them.Rory really develops and grows in Knock on Wood, learning to accept the death of her fiancé,Warren, and moving forward with her life. She's still cautious but doesn't continually dwell on the events that lead to Warren's untimely death. She's still curious about the superstition about walking under a ladder but she isn't allowing it to hold her back from what may come with Chief of Police, Justin. There isn't a lot of additional character development with the supporting cast members, which is unfortunate. Rory moved to Destiny without knowing anyone yet was able to easily fit it. We get bits and pieces about those she interacts with the most but it would be interesting to learn more about them and who really believes in the superstitions, that the town relies on for tourism. If you're looking for an easy read, look no further than Linda O. Johnston's Superstition Mystery series. The characters are likable and written with emotion and depth. The mysteries are engaging and the author tosses in a few red herrings to help disguise the true suspect(s). I had fun reading both books in the series and plan to continue reading the series.Review copy courtesy of the publishing company, at no cost, in exchange for an honest review.

Written when John Barth was 24 years old, The Floating Opera is his first novel, published in 1957. It is a first-person reminiscence of the day Todd Andrews decided to commit suicide. Having picked up some sense of the French Existentialist writers from the postwar Zeitgeist, this novel questions life's value through the eyes of a 37-year-old man.

"His ability to contrive a really preposterous situation is impressive. His gift of gab is impressive, too." --New York Times

Thrice nominated for the National Book Award―The Floating Opera, Lost in the Funhouse, and Chimera, which won in 1973―Barth has received the F. Scott Fitzgerald Award for Outstanding Achievement in American Fiction, the PEN/Malamud Award for Excellence in the Short Story, and the Lannan Foundation Lifetime Achievement Award. Barth 101: An Introduction to the Master By cs211 John Barth's first novel will celebrate its fiftieth anniversary of publication in 2006 (I read the 1967 revised edition, which Barth rewrote primarily, he says, to restore his original ending). Should this almost 50 year-old book, whose protagonist was born in 1900, still be read in the 21st century, by people who may not have even been alive when Barth wrote it? Emphatically, positively, yes!The Floating Opera serves as an excellent introduction to the body of work of one of the 20th century's greatest writers (time will tell), and also stands on its own as an engrossing, amusing, thought-provoking tale. It establishes many of Barth's common themes and settings: the flawed, cynical (yet also fun-loving) protagonist; impossible quests; the absurdities of society's structures and laws; philosophy and morality; coastal Maryland and boating on the Chesapeake. Barth's later works are longer and much more intricate, so TFO is very much like Beethoven's first symphony: a simpler work than his later masterpieces, but which still shows definite signs of genius, originality, and timelessness. The storyline, like Barth's other works, is quirky and highly original. It describes the lead-up to an event that, because of the way the book was written (in the first person), the reader knows cannot have taken place. Barth openly explains the disjointed nature of the book's structure (which is just one way that the floating opera of the title is important to the story), and everything holds together in the end.TFO's protagonist, Todd Andrews, is a lawyer who has developed a detached, cynical view of the world. His mentality is perfect for his profession, and he wins his cases by crafting intricate technical loopholes that reduce his cases to absurdities. Thirty-five years before the Johnnie Cochran's poetic words in the O.J. Simpson trial, Barth prophetically describes a similar situation of the "bon mot" winning out over the "mot juste". But this is just one of the amusing vignettes in TFO. Barth also describes the challenges of an open love triangle, different ways to approach old age and death, the drawbacks of various outlooks on life, and an intense father-son relationship. Comic relief is never too far away, especially when the various crusty old men in the book are speaking. How to rate TFO? On the Barth scale, it is not his greatest masterpiece, so you'd have to give it less than 5 stars. But on the scale of all works and all authors, it definitely deserves a 5 star rating.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Short AND bleak AND funny By Michael Battaglia Barth has so many big huge enormous novels that his first two shorter works are perhaps unjustly overlooked in the shadows of their bulkier brethren. This novel coupled with The End of the Road established him as a new voice with a distinctly different point of view. No doubt readers were hardly ready to read the book and find out that it's about a man who one day decides that the most logical thing for him to do is commit suicide and so he spends the entire book discussing what exactly led him to this decision. Barth somehow turns this jarring premise into something both witty and often extremely funny. Told in the first person, like most of his best books, the constant barrage of mythological references that characterize most of his work haven't appeared yet and so the book remains mostly straightforward (though the copy on the front cover amusingly compares the book to famous literary personages) . . . or at least as straightforward as Barth gets. The narrator tells his story in a roundabout fashion, jumping all over the place in time, sometimes stopping the story for brief asides that occur to him along the way, always reminding the reader of the planned end result of all of this. Barth manages to keep his narrator witty and involving, his viewpoint is detached and often bordering on existential, yet the book isn't cold and sterile, in fact it's move very quickly and despite its subject matter is pretty enjoyable. It's not as dark as The End of the Road and even though it's about suicide it really isn't all that depressing. For some reason the original ending was changed at the request (more like demand) of the publisher, later versions have restored the original and I'm not sure what the fuss was all about, there's nothing really shocking about it. Different times I guess. Still, along The End of the Road, this remains one of the best ways to ease your way into Barth before tackling the more complicated, erudite stuff he would later accomplish. Everyone has to start somewhere. You might as well start here.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Incredibly well-crafted, subtly psychotic By Patrick Zimmerli Barth's first work out of the gate is a tremendous literary success. How did he know so much about the world as a young man of twenty-four? It boggles the mind. I first encountered the Floating Opera when I myself was in my early twenties, and identified deeply with its philosophical, questing hero. Revisiting the book more than a decade later, some of its philosophizing comes off as a touch sophomoric, but I still find it deeply satisfying. It's written with wit, charm, and extreme self-assurance, and the plot is beautifully paced, with many hilarious digressions along the way, weaving together to form a wonderful picture of life in small-town Maryland. Barth also had a nose for hot-button issues (his second Book, the End of the Road, took on abortion in the late '50s), and the ending of the Opera features an offhand suicide-bombing attempt that raises the hair on one's neck far more today than it would've a decade ago.
