Reed Haflinger and his aloof wife take an impromptu trip to Mexico's Riviera Maya, but it's not the reconnection Reed was hoping for. When she departs early for home, he stays at the resort, lost in what remains of a vacation he feels he deserves. But when a brief interaction with a beautiful female traveler offers a clue as to how to meet her again, Reed must decide whether to venture out of his comfort zone in search of her, or accept that he will always let life pass him by. In this mesmerizing debut novel, travel writer Ray Bartlett brings us a dark, complex love story as lush, beautiful, and unflinching as the landscape of Tulum itself, a place that you – just like Bartlett's unforgettable characters – will not want to leave.

He captures your attention from the first chapter, in which news cameraman Reed Heflinger barely survives a near helicopter crash while filming in Boston, all the way to the surprising end. Reed walks away with minor scratches but with a determination to change his life, taking his wife Laurel to Yucatán, Mexico (a stunning character in itself) to repair their shaky marriage. He finds more than he bargained for and ends up re-evaluating who he is and what life means when he meets a lively woman many years his junior. Sparks fly, sex and adventure abound and Mr. Bartlett, a master of description (as one might expect from an accomplished travel writer) escorts you right into place and mind. The characters in this book are nuanced and real. The plot twists are unexpected.I have only one criticism. The sex scenes (and there are plenty) are described in a detail but too clinically to be erotic. Nonetheless, they deepen our understanding of the humanness of the lovers. I can’t wait to read his next book.

Sunsets of Tulum represents so much of how men in their 30's and 40's are struggling with acceptance of change and how a new generation seems care-free and enlightening. But that is not always the case, and Ray Bartlett exemplifies it in such pristine detail that anyone can relate to the main characters Reed or Clione. Reed to me was sort of an anti-hero, which was very refreshing since usually the main character of novels is the good guy. It is not to say he is not a good guy, but he has flaws and those flaws contribute to so much of the story. Clione is so detailed in every way that she seems to be a true person and wouldn't be surprised if she were to sit next to me on a park bench. The book was riveting from beginning to end with so many twists and turns that I couldn't put the book down. I recommend this to anyone wanting to read adventure and romance.

I began reading it again the following morning as I sipped my coffee ... and hours later, still in my pajamas and after shirking household responsibilities and canceling plans, I finished it with that combination of satisfaction and sadness you have when you close the cover on a world into which you've escaped. This book has romantic elements, but it is not a romance. It also has adventurous elements, but it is not an adventure. It is complex and smart and sexy and ... I only hate that I've already read it! I can't wait to read this author's next novel.
