I read alot, but I usually only read books that are about 300 pages maybe. When I got this book, I thought it would take me weeks to get through it since it is 733 pages, but I actually finished it in 3 days. The first thing that caught me was the Prolouge. It got my attention immediately and I was very happy to know that the rest of the story was just as captivating. I couldn't put it down! This story is about love and truth and being yourself. It is defintely something that will make you think about your life and everything around you. If you want to read something that will show you the truth, this is the book for you. Enjoy it!

The Innocence of Father Brown, by G. K. Chesterton

Review ''G. K. Chesterton's tales [are] of the unassuming Catholic priest who claims that his work at the confessional (where he has to do 'next to nothing but hear men's real sins') puts him in an excellent position to solve the bizarre crimes that come his way in pre-First World War England . . . The unassuming cleric, whose humble conviction that his God will eventually triumph over the souls of even the most evil of criminals, is the quiet but insistent heartbeat of these unusual exercises in detective fiction.'' --Sunday Times (London)

From the Publisher 8 1-hour cassettes

About the Author Gilbert Keith Chesterton was born in London, England, in 1874. He went on to study art at the Slade School, and literature at University College in London. Chesterton wrote a great deal of poetry, as well as works of social and literary criticism. Among his most notable books are "The Man Who Was Thursday", a metaphysical thriller, and "The Everlasting Man", a history of humankind's spiritual progress. After Chesterton converted to Catholicism in 1922, he wrote mainly on religious topics such as "Orthodoxy" and "Heretics". Chesterton is most known for creating the famous priest-detective character Father Brown, who first appeared in "The Innocence of Father Brown". Chesterton died in 1936 at the age of 62.

The Best Mystery Write EVER By Patricia Harrelson I read this on the recommendation of my 14 year old grandson who claims Chesterton is the best mystery writer EVER! My grandson just might be right. Clearly Chesterton is a highly intelligent story-crafter. This collection of short stories about Father Brown kept me awake and alert and ALWAYS surprised regarding the outcome. There was nothing formulaic or predictable in these stories. Father Brown is delightful in a Columbo fashion (perhaps the TV detective was modeled after him), and his sleuthing is remarkably unique. I loved Chesterton's use of language too. His sentences are long and luscious and his vocabulary makes reading a delicious experience. I must say, I'm quite happy to know that a 14 year old finds Chesterton so exceptional.

27 of 28 people found the following review helpful. Introducing Father Brown By Michele L. Worley The 12 stories herein can of course be found in THE COMPLETE FATHER BROWN, and THE ANNOTATED INNOCENCE OF FATHER BROWN. This is the first Brown collection, which introduces not only Father Brown himself but Flambeau, the daring thief. Father Brown worked on Flambeau during their early confrontations, and eventually persuaded him to give up his life of crime. He became Father Brown's friend and sometime sidekick, and appears in three-quarters of the stories herein, in one capacity or another."The Blue Cross" - The great detective Valentin knows that Flambeau the thief has selected a little English priest as his target, since the priest has been entrusted with a valuable cross set with sapphires. But when Valentin begins tracking the priest across the city, a very odd pattern of incidents begins to emerge."The Secret Garden" - Father Brown is a dinner guest in Valentin's home."The Queer Feet" - 'The Twelve True Fishermen', meeting for their annual fish dinner at a small, exclusive restaurant, saw the usual count of waiters - but one had died hours before! Father Brown (called in earlier for the waiter's dying confession and last rites) unravels a spectacular caper."The Flying Stars" - Flambeau's last crime (as noted in the 1st paragraph of the story), cited as an example of his love of artistically matching settings with crimes. His confrontation with Father Brown resonates nicely with the preceding story's metaphor of Brown having him on a line like a fish."The Invisible Man" - Locked-room mystery. The inventor was found murdered in his flat, but witnesses say that nobody could have gone past them without being seen."The Honour of Israel Gow" - This story actually takes place *after* "The Wrong Shape". The Earl of Glengyle was a hermit - and after finding some very odd circumstances in the Earl's home after his death, Flambeau and Father Brown begin to fear that Satanism is involved."The Wrong Shape" - The writer was a bad husband and an unpleasant man, and the beautifully penned suicide note seemed almost too good to be true."The Sins of Prince Saradine" - Flambeau takes Father Brown along to collect on the prince's invitation, sent to him during his criminal career, to visit if he were to become respectable, since he greatly admired Flambeau's stunt of once arranging for one policeman to arrest another, when both were looking for *him*."The Hammer of God" - The last two Bohuns are the curate, who pursues the beauty of his church, and the colonel, who chases women. But if he managed to catch the blacksmith's wife, it may well have been the death of him."The Eye of Apollo" - Locked-room mystery. Father Brown came to visit Flambeau, who has taken an office in a new building. Pauline Stacey, a rich idealist in a neighbouring office, fell down the empty elevator shaft that same day - when nobody else, apparently, was in the building."The Sign of the Broken Sword" - Why has Father Brown taken Flambeau to every monument to the memory of the great general, finally ending here at his grave? "Where does a wise man hide a leaf? In a forest." Someone, unfortunately, once took that saying to heart."The Three Tools of Death" - With three weapons visible on the scene, why did the victim die by a fall from a window?

16 of 16 people found the following review helpful. A wonderful collection of stories By Axver G. K. Chesterton had a writing ability that is nothing short of extraordinary. He could craft landscapes, settings, and locations with vivid textures, and possessed a cunning knack that made the ordinary seem thoroughly outlandish and the peculiar rather tame. This collection of short mysteries aptly shows off his skill as a writer; whereas most authors would use an entire novel to build tension, cultivate atmosphere, and weave a complex mystery, Chesterton could do all that in a few brief pages - and at a much higher level of quality too! Reading this book is like reading twelve beautifully crafted novels in one, such is the quality.I won't spoil the stories for you; reading this book is a rewarding journey for the imagination, meeting many characters fantastic in their normalcy or surprisingly believable and realistic in their peculiarity, visiting locations stunningly brought to life with a writing skill that is second to none, and delving into mysterious events that are often confusing, complex, and entertaining for the brain. Don't pick this book up if you want some pedestrian tales; pick it up if you want first-class storytelling that will keep you both guessing and thinking.

This unique book records the experiences of Irish doctors who joined the British armed forces during World War I. It describes their journey from the relative calm of a pre-war medical career to the horrors of the battlefield. Over 240 Irish doctors lost their lives in the conflict, many with no known grave. The courageous and selfless actions of these doctors, while assisting their comrades under military fire, is explored in a comprehensive yet human account of the key battles and the medical care developed to deal with the aftermath of battle. Included in the book is the indispensable 'Directory of Irish Doctors,' which is compiled from available records and publications. Each profile contains the name, family details, and military record, including medals and honors awarded, where the information was available. This record, by its very nature and extent, is a fitting and lasting tribute to the Irish medical personnel who risked everything and sacrificed their lives. This book is well worth reading, it’s aimed at a wide general readership, not being full of military or medical jargon By waynefitz This beautifully illustrated book is in two parts, the first part is an account of the various posts of the first world war, including some of the less wellknown theatres of the middle east – Suez Canal, Palestine, Syria and Basra as well as the campaigns in Salonika and Serbia; all areas familiarto some An Cosantóir readers. There are chapters on the war at sea, French warfare, medical care and casualty evacuation.A chapter on Ireland includes a list of all the auxiliary military hospitals, including the Red Cross hospital in Dublin Castle, where many of the wounded were taken during the 1916 rebellion including James Connolly. Strangely, the major military hospitals, some of which are still used by todays Defence Forces only receive a passing mention. The second part of the book is a roll of honour of all the Irish doctors and students who served in the Great War.Amongst the famous was Sir Alfred Keogh from Dublin who was Director General of the Royal Army Medical Corps. He retired before the war but was recalled at the start of the war. Sir F. J. Morrin joined the RAMC in 1915, but left it after Easter 1916 and joined the French Army. He was decorated with the Legion of Honour. After his return to Ireland, he was surgeon in the Curragh Hospital at the height of the Civil War, then the Director General of the Army Medical Corps. He later became a distinguished surgeon in St. Vincent’s Hospital and died in 1968.This book is well worth reading, it’s aimed at a wide general readership, not being full of military or medical jargon. Nevertheless, it will interestmilitary and medical historians. As reviewed by Charles J Brown, in the September 2015 issue of An Cosantóir (The Defender) - the official magazine of the Irish Defence Forces - dfmagazine.ie

Just, wow. I’m going to begin by introducing y’all to the cast of characters or we’ll all be hopelessly but happily (maybe deliriously) lost.Pål – single father, social worker, all-around good guy, internet gambling addict, aspiring to normality, scary and/or crazy factor: 3Malene – teenage daughter of Pål, gymnast, all-around good girl, aspiring caretaker, scary and/or crazy factor: 0Tiril – teenage daughter of Pål, younger sister to Malene, singing Goth idealist, aspiring avenging angel, scary and/or crazy factor: 4Sandra – classmate of Malene, co-worker of Tiril, in love with Daniel, aspiring martyr, scary and/or crazy factor: 5Daniel – foster kid, deeply disturbed control freak, sometime high school student, aspiring Clyde Barrow and/or Ted Bundy, scary and/or crazy factor: 11Veronika – foster sister to and in love (lust?) with Daniel, aspiring Bonnie to Daniel’s Clyde, scary and/or crazy factor: 8Jan Inge – criminal mastermind, lonely philosopher, horror film aficionado, aspiring writer, scary and/or crazy factor: 7Rudi – best friend and loyal right-hand-man of Jan Inge, boyfriend of Cecilie, career criminal with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, aspiring Luddite, scary and/or crazy factor: 8Cecilie – sister of Jan Inge, girlfriend of Rudi, former teenage hooker, inferiority complex, aspiring person, scary and/or crazy factor: 6Tong – Korean cartoon character, inmate, aspiring ascetic, scary and/or crazy factor: 12Setting: 3 fateful autumn days in Stavanger, NorwayGot that? Okay. See You Tomorrow by Tore Renberg is a brilliant accomplishment. It is a crime novel about, perhaps counter intuitively, love and philosophy. Also damaged people attracting each other like magnets and steel. Pål loves his daughters and his dog. Malene loves her father and her sister. Tiril loves the planet. Sandra loves Daniel and Jesus. Daniel loves Sandra AND Veronika. Veronika loves no one. Jan Inge loves everyone. Rudi loves Cecilie and Jan Inge and is willing to give everyone the benefit of the doubt. Cecilie loves Rudi and Jan Inge. Tong loves himself. This is a long book – 551 pages – but it is a page-turner; it begins with intrigue on page one and the pace never lags. The sense of foreboding is palpable – you just know these wack-jobs are all going to end up in the same scene together sooner or later. Everybody has a secret and as Renberg torques the tension the question becomes: Which secret is the Jenga secret? At what point does everything come tumbling down? One of the pervasive and most intriguing themes in this story is change and the stress it causes. Even good changes cause stress: marriage, childbirth, job promotions, graduations. Stress over bad changes can flatten you: divorce, death, losing a job. Criminals are people, too: Technology, the internet and the disappearance of cassette tapes scares the hell out of Rudi. Cecilie is melancholy over gentrification in their down-at-the-heels neighborhood and, feeling out of place, wonders if maybe she should gentrify herself as well. Jan Inge is terrified that Rudi and Cecilie will move out of the house they share in favor of their own place and then everything will change.See You Tomorrow is often very funny in an off-kilter way that manages to point out the absurdities and contradictions in the lives of its characters, usually, somehow, in a rather gentle manner. For example, Jan Inge and the gang have decided upon “a time-honored classic” insurance scam to get the money Pål needs to square his gambling debts. Here’s Jan Inge explaining the motivations of the hypothetical criminals [them] that are going to break into Pål’s home, rough him up and steal his stuff:“It’s the same as when a gang of youths kick the wing mirrors off parked cars. They’re generally acting out after a painful upbringing. They’ve experienced maltreatment and abuse. We’re talking about failure of care a lot of the time. These people have something inside that has to come out. A need for destruction. The crooks that were at your place tonight suffer from something like that. Do you understand, Pål?”He is, of course, absolutely correct and has unwittingly described himself and his cohorts. Here they are discussing how much damage to inflict on Pål, specifically whether they should break his nose, and Rudi feels that he’s being ignored in favor of a just-sprung Tong:Pål stamps on the floor. Jan Inge turns to him. “Yes, Pål? Did you want to say something?”“What are … what … are … you talking … about?”Jan Inge shrugs. “Well,” he explains, “it’s just that we have had a mishap with a nose before.”“Mishap? Whatkindamishap?”“It’s not really something we ought to be discussing with you, Pål. That just wouldn’t be right. Now we’re going to break it, it will hurt, but Tong knows what he’s doing. Put it this way, the mishap wasn’t his fault –”“Yeah, rub it in!” Rudi shouts.“Rudi, don’t be touchy. Remember what we talked about. Little good comes from taking affront. … ”“Rubitinbaby! … One mistake and it haunts you for the rest of your life! I’m here too y’know, I do exist! What is it you’re always saying? That we’re a team? You’ll never walk alone? Well then. Mr. Bull**** Writer. Mr. Horror, what do you think it’s like not to be noticed? Just because that little Korean is back again? Have you forgotten your chocolate chip cookies, Manchurian Candidate? I WON’T STAND FOR THIS! ONE MISTAKE AND YOU’RE HAUN –”Jan Inge fixes his gaze on a point picked in the air at random. He inhales and exhales, feeling like an adult in a nursery.Teenagers drive a lot of the action in See You Tomorrow. Everyone knows that teenagers are dramatic and, due to inexperience, have a faulty sense of perspective. “Over and over again they repeated their own short history, and they thought it was the most important story of all.” Y’all remember that feeling? I remember. We do teens a disservice when we tell them that what they’re feeling isn’t really love. Then we get into the argument over perception v. objective reality. Is there such a thing as objective reality? Or is there only perception? No matter which side of that argument you come down on it is inarguable that perceptions lead to actions and those actions have consequences. What if the best you can do is wake up every morning and try to do better? In the end I agree with Jan Inge: the most terrifying thing is the fact that there is such a thing as too late. We’ve just lived, Pål thinks, from one day to the next, we’ve tried to do as well as we could. Often, when he hears people discussing their lives, it seems like they’re talking about a series of choices they’ve made. It doesn’t feel like that to Pål. It feels, for the most part, as though life were a river and he’s been a boat.Don’t be a boat, people. Be a current.

Not my new favorite book, but it was addictive & good for long train (constant interruption & randomly staring off into space) By b2m0k This book is interesting enough. There are a lot of characters to keep track of and the plot seems extremely familiar. However, I had picked this up when I was overseas in the English section and it kept me entertained on the train. I wouldn't recommend this as a book that you buy right out and read for the intention of reading. But it was a really good pick for a train station stop and the story is easy enough to follow along that you can read it in 20 or 30 minutes bursts and keep track. Like some of the reviewers said, the characters are very one dimensional. They like to think of themselves as being more interesting than they are, but they really are flat people. I don't hate this book, but I don't love it. It is what it is, easy to read and maybe it seems so flat because it was originally in Norwegian and some of the more subtle nuances got lost in translation. I picked it up because it so that it had won the English pen award, whatever the heck that is.I did think they did a good job of capturing Rudi, who is a guy with the ADHD and has aggravated his mind by drugs and the author details the attention and thought patterns that make him a little crazy. He is the only character that I would consider more developed, because his mental state and his reaction to drugs was very real to me. I can only assume that the author has some of these experiences or know someone who does because that was spot on. All that said, I still found him kind of flat, but it was definitely a step in a new direction.

By Liz Barnsley An absolutely fabulous book that really shouldnt work but does, manages to gently roll along whilst at the same time being fast paced and highly addictive, and to top it all off it is at times hilariously funny. Sometimes in that way where you know you SHOULDN’T be laughing but you will anyway. Sometimes because it is just simply ironically humerous in that way that touches you on a human level. It was described as 600 pages of pure energy and that really about covers it.At its basic level it is simply a story of people. Lives that clash unexpectedly and suddenly over the course of a few days, changing those lives forever. A more eclectic and strange yet wonderful group of characters you will be hard put to find anywhere else, but they are all intriguing, full of depth and substance and will become as real to you as anyone in your life over the course of that few days you live with them. I read about half of the book in one huge gulp then forced myself to slow down, not wanting it to end, not wanting to leave them behind me but to keep following on with them. One of those novels that won’t let you go even when you put it down, here is yet another strong contender for my top 10 of the year. There are many themes interwoven into the narrative – addiction, violence, love, loss, the things we will do for those we care about, the lengths we will go to in order to protect our self image and self worth. It is often brutal, occasionally heart wrenching, a real window into the soul of humanity in all its forms. Intelligently done and beautifully written with some stunning prose, chapter after chapter you will fall more and more under the spell of the world the author has created here. Authentic, genuinely fascinating and with great psychological depth, it is a truly amazing reading experience.I won’t give anything away. To do so would absolutely spoil the joy of this. But in summary, some quirky and original characters, an intense and realistic storyline and some absolutely incredible writing make this without doubt one of the top reads of 2014. Don’t worry what your comfort zone is – this book at some point will hit all reading comfort zones. Just let yourself go and enjoy.**Source: Publisher Review Copy UK**

Land This is an important book on how we have socially constructed childhood from the fifteenth to the eighteen century in visual culture (paintings, drawings, sculpture). A worthy addition (vol. 18) to Routledge's The Body, Gender and Culture series, the scholarly essays are not only perceptive and informative, they are well-written.

Wright on: The star pieces of Americas greatest architect   A building by Frank Lloyd Wright (1867-1959) is at once unmistakably individual, and evocative of an entire era. Notable for their exceptional understanding of an organic environment, as well as for their use of steel and glass to revolutionize the interface of indoor and outdoor, Wright’s designs helped announce the age of modernity, as much as they secured his own name in the annals of architectural genius. This meticulous compilation from TASCHEN’s previous three-volume monograph assembles the most important works from Wright’s extensive, paradigm-shifting oeuvre into one authoritative and accessibly priced overview of America's most famous architect. Based on unlimited access to the Frank Lloyd Wright Archives in Taliesin, Arizona, the collection spans the length and breadth of Wright’s projects, both realized and unrealized, from his early Prairie Houses, through the Usonian concept home, epitomized by Fallingwater, the Tokyo years, his progressive “living architecture” buildings, right through to later schemes like the Guggenheim Museum, New York, and fantastic visions for a better tomorrow in the “living city.” Author Bruce Brooks Pfeiffer, who served as Wright’s apprentice during the 1950s, discusses recent research on Wright and gives his own insights on these game-changing buildings.   Text in English, French, and German

Beginners Guide Book for Mastering Graphic Design) By sallyann cole This book is as good of a summary of the necessary skills and practices that are essential to contemporary communication design as I have ever seen. I was educated in graphic design in my undergrad by the legacy of modern design and Bauhaus pedagogy, even in the wake of the sweeping technological change that was occurring all around us. This book finally catches up on a curriculum and approach that would make sense for today. After working professionally as a graphic designer for 5 years, I'm currently enrolled in a graduate program for media design. This book tells that graphic design is just the beginning, but a very necessary foundation for all kinds of design practices that our dynamic world requires. This book represent a fairly off the shelf curriculum that would serve any designer(beginner to advanced) well to follow. All that would be left is years to practice... Very Nice!

While some of these imperfections may have appeared in the original work, others may have resulted from the scanning process that has been applied. However, our view is that this is a significant literary work, which deserves to be brought back into print after many decades. While some publishers have applied optical character recognition (OCR), this approach has its own drawbacks, which include formatting errors, misspelt words, or the presence of inappropriate characters. Our philosophy has been guided by a desire to provide the reader with an experience that is as close as possible to ownership of the original work. We hope that you will enjoy this wonderful classic book, and that the occasional imperfection that it might contain will not detract from the experience.

A plug nickel causes lame boy to flee to the country By Janice aboard Seaweed I downloaded this book because the author was listed (and recommended) in the back of a Horatio Alger book. On checking I see he wrote Toby Tyler (Circus book) and then went through other offerings to see what looked interesting. This one, with a woman in the title seemed like it might be okayIt's more than okay. The premise is a young boy of 11, with a lame leg (handicapped) is a newsboy in New York. One of his fellow newsies spots an advertisement looking for Seth with directions to appear in a lawyer's office. Seth cannot imagine why he's wanted. Then he looks through his pocket of change and realizes a lead nickel is gone.Spoilers follow:He's passed bad money and now the cops are after him!! That's the why, so he undertakes to leave the city. Friends help him get on a ferry to leave and advise him to find a spot in the country.Seth flees, with a small white puppy he loves above all else.Disappointment follows -- folks in the country call him a tramp! Finally he finds a home and spot with Aunt Hannah and her niece Gladys. Snip (the white dog) loves the country, chasing butterflies and more. Seth however is out of place and scared of a big cow. He's troubled by his conscience. Should he tell about being wanted by the lawyers for passing that bad nickel and be thrown out of the nicest home he's ever had or not? Aunt Hannah says prayers before every meal. The cow with long horns provides milk. (I'm not country but that seemed wrong!)There is danger (fire!) and Seth saves the day. Finally a newspaper article sets in motion the end of the book.I'm glad I read it and look forward to reading other James Otis books.

I've enjoyed several of Otis's books, and this is no exception. It is a lot shorter than a lot of his books. It's not quite a short story, but it's a quick read. I think that most children about ages 9 or 10 would enjoy it, but it's a nice book for adults, too.

“The water is murky. Sand and grit stir it up, making it difficult for the giant predator with the 6-foot-tall sail on his back to see. He lowers his mouth into the water, his high nostrils allowing him to breathe easily while the pits on his snout feel for pressure and sense for fish swimming nearby. Nothing moves, or at least nothing worth attempting to catch. The large theropod—Spinosaurus—wades into the water. Tired from balancing his long head and neck with his short back legs, Spinosaurus relaxes as he submerges like a crocodile, flexing his flat, webbed feet in the water.” In the golden age of dinosaur discoveries, paleontologists are frequently learning about new dinosaurs and new facts about already known species. Since the beginning of time, an unknown life-form has been trapped inside every single human cell. Nature blocked it, denied its growth, denied its life. Now, in a small lab, two scientists have stumbled upon this odd anomaly. One scientist believes this is what human life should have evolved into; and normal human life was a mistake. The scientist's colleague, greedy, set on self gain, allows the oddity to be cut loose. This sets off a string of events allowing the living infestation to ravage life as we know it, taking revenge on human kind for being locked inside a cell for eons. Set in current day Orlando, Florida, before the long Fourth of July weekend, the Evolution of the Dead begins.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Made Me Sick...In A Good Way By Ursula K. Raphael I love the initial concept of this novel: something locked away in our DNA is set free by a couple of scientists who think the anomaly is what should have been our natural evolution. The initial outbreak occurs in Orlando, Florida, just in time for the July 4th weekend, and the infection is spread by a mere touch. In other words, everyone is totally screwed.Carmen has the ability to sense something bad about to happen, and when she gets one of her feelings, she can only watch as the domino effect takes the life of her boyfriend. Scott and Kim are the only two to escape a parking garage that has become a death trap for everyone else. Janet jumps in Nick's car, and the two barely break away from a hellish traffic jam. Eventually, the survivors converge on the same truck rental location for sanctuary, but the infection has already beaten them there. The details of the infection are so graphic, I was gagging through most of the story. As soon as I saw the word "worms," it was all over for me. Especially when the virus evolves to become more potent. The likelihood of becoming one of the dead is so high, I had little to no hope for the characters, especially when Carmen because severely injured, and the group turns on one another. If you read this novel, abandon all hope.R.M. Smith gets points for setting up such a bleak and grotesque outbreak scenario, but he loses points for the lack of depth in his characters. Without proper character development, the story is a little flat, even with all the action. I would have liked to see Smith do more with Carmen's sixth sense and I think her hobbling around with broken bones isn't realistic (I had a broken foot and there is no bloody way I could jump, climb, etc. the way Carmen does). Nick is a mystery; he talks about his pregnant girlfriend, while being a complete pig to the female survivors, not to mention the other horrible things that he does throughout the story...I would have liked to know why his personality is so dualistic. Janet didn't have much personality at all, and Scott and Kim are, well, Scott and Kim.Considering how long the novel is, I think Smith had plenty of space to do more with his main characters. He also could have skipped the side stories with the supporting characters, and just focused on the core group. All things considered, I was entertained, and that's all I really ask for with my undead. Beware if you have a weak stomach, but enjoy otherwise.

I am a big fan of zombies and all zombie related ideas, stories, theories, shows and movies; but this writer comes at you with an entirely different angle. This book is like nothing I have ever before enjoyed I read it's entirety in one sitting, although I was on the edge of my seat for the whole experience. I read through the other reviews of Evolution and a few are terrible, I mean why would you write something that discredits an author if you do not even read the book? Not just because I am a huge fan, but that goes for anything. I mean you don't write a review on a restaurant you only ate one bite from. With that said if you like zombies or even a fresh new read, Evolution is a well written unexpected journey with some in depth characters. I highly recommend this author and his adventure in learning our Evolution.

"Sam's Chance" is a sequel to the "Young Outlaw," and is designed to illustrate the gradual steps by which that young man was induced to give up his bad habits, and deserve that prosperity which he finally attains. The writer confesses to have experienced some embarrassment in writing this story. The story writer always has at command expedients by which the frowns of fortune may be turned into sunshine, and this without violating probability, or, at any rate, possibility; for the careers of many of our most eminent and successful men attest that truth is often-times stranger than fiction. But to cure a boy of radical faults is almost as difficult in fiction as in real life. Whether the influences which led to Sam's reformation were adequate to that result, must be decided by the critical reader. The author may, at any rate, venture to congratulate Sam's friends that he is now more worthy of their interest and regard than in the years when he was known as the "Young Outlaw."

He starts out bad. Truly not a good young man... he has opportunities and when given them, either pawns the ring (not his) and then lies, attempts to steal from his roommate, etc. Sam has some rough times, all of which he earns by virtue of having none! What I liked is how when finally he reaches the decision to have a fresh start he truly does turn over a new leaf. He meets new friends, gains employment and most important of all, the opportunity to have an education. Finally he decides to learn and by golly, he does so.The ending is satisfactory and I'm glad I read Sam's Chance. It shows that you can "pull yourself up by your bootstraps" provided you study hard and are industrious, don't smoke, gamble, or drink. Sam initially made bad choices but he did change. It's a good story.

0 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Story of Two Different Paths By A Customer Alger writes another fairly predictable rags to riches story about a fifteen-year-old orphan who lives on the streets of New York. Sam, the protagonist, is a wily young man who takes life as it comes. He never saves and spends all of his earnings before payday.Sam starts the story in the employ of a successful businessman. Sam receives $5 a week, but cannot make ends meet. His roommate, who studies at night and saves money, is more than capable of saving money. In this story, Sam learns that gambling does not pay, that idleness and lack of responsibility at the work place can get one into trouble, and the value of saving money. Alger provides for Sam's about face recovery upon meeting a young woman on the way to Boston -- where Sam plans to relocate for bigger and better things.Alger shows the wrongs and the rights for young man growing up. He advocates avoiding billiards, gambling, and tobacco. He also encourages his readers to study. Sam's roommate, who's behavior and habits are the opposite of Sam's, succeeds, while Sam continues to struggle. This was a fun book to read and light-hearted.
