‘The ultimate gated community is a human being with a closed mind.’ JG Ballard In Dubai there’s a new world of high-luxury resorts emerging for the super-rich—but at what price to everyone else? Lea, Roy and their 15 year-old daughter Cara live in a gated community reserved for foreign workers. Roy has been hired to deal with teething problems at Dream World, a futuristic beach complex. In the oppressive heat, the wives appear happy to follow behind their husbands, cooking and arranging tea parties, but Lea finds herself a virtual prisoner in a land where Western women are regarded with indifference and suspicion. At least there are a few friendly outsiders who don’t enjoy the conformity of the ex-pat community—until one night, when the most outspoken one dies in a suspicious accident. It’s the first in a string of terrible occurrences that divide the foreign workers. Lea’s neighbours start to blame migrants, locals and even each other. Lea is convinced that deliberate acts of cruelty are being committed—but is there a real threat to her life, or is she becoming paranoid? And what if what she fears most is really happening? What happens in a world where only the rich are important? Welcome to a future that’s five minutes away, where rebellion against conformity can lead to the unthinkable… ‘Fowler demonstrates that [supernatural stories] can both chill the blood and be a repository for truly elegant writing.’ The Independent on Nyctophobia ‘A deeply uneasy atmosphere, and assured, witty prose. ****’ SFX on Nyctophobia ‘A useful message, couched in thriller guise: only by empathizing with demons can we conquer them.’ Locus Magazine on Nyctophobia

Ballard novel that J.G. Ballard didn't write. It fits neatly with the latter run of the late author's work, echoing themes and settings present in Cocaine Nights, Super-Cannes, and Kingdom Come: the dissociation of the ex-patriot, the isolating irreality of the mega-rich enclaves, the futility of noncomformity in gated communities, it's all here. This is a knowing homage that incorporates Ballard's distinctive style, melding it with Fowler's own to keep from being pure pastiche. But Fowler is also--perhaps primarily--a horror author, and the horrific inevitably asserts itself in his work. As with his previous novel, the exceptional Nyctophobia, Fowler treads a line of ambiguity. There might be something deeper and more far-reaching than the wealthy hands guiding the construction of the Dream World resort in Dubai. The protagonist's observations are called into question, not only by people who might have ulterior motives but also by her own self-examination, and we are offered rational and realistic explanations for events. Fowler uses all of this material to touch on many contemporary concerns, from the problematic nature of cultural imperialism to the exploitation of working classes in projects driven by globalized economics. As with most Ballard novels, Fowler's book is a slow burn, and there are significant events that happen "off screen," which might frustrate some readers. The plotting is deliberate and the descriptions careful, all of which leads to a rewarding read in the end.

And it is funny because I've read a couple of novels recently that tackle the growing Middle East in terms of pushing a closed society into open excess and decadence. David Eggers wrote a similar type of setting; though a bit of a different book. There have also been a few others. And so far none have truly been able to juggle the mix of placing an outsider in a society trying to juggle becoming the playground for an open culture that wallows in wealthy consumption and a society that suddenly has that level of wealth but a culture that is deemed repressive and incredibly archaic. And this somehow just does not find the right plot and characters to utilize this setting. This type of juxtaposition that is just too large to just blend into the background. Instead there is an oddness to how the plot. the mystery, unfolds. Coincidence in the end seemed to be relied on too much for me, Draining the story of suspense and leaving me lacking any sense of true intrigue.

Just Because You're Paranoid Doesn't Mean They Aren't After You By Sam Sattler Having lived the ex-pat life in a Muslim country or two (although only in the poorer, more politically chaotic ones), I was immediately drawn to the premise for Christopher Fowler’s The Sand Men. Fowler’s novel happens to be set in Dubai, one of the richest of the Arab countries - but what even the richest Muslim nations have in common with the poorest ones is a huge divide between the rich and the poor. It is almost as if the two groups live on different planets, and ex-pats thrown into the mix do not always handle themselves properly when exposed to such a glaring contrast.Lea and Roy Brook are in the financial struggle of their lives in London when Roy receives a job offer from a company building several luxury hotels in Dubai. Roy is out of work and the young family is simply hanging on for dear life, so Roy’s acceptance of the job offer is really a no-brainer. But after she has moved into the huge company-housing compound with Roy and their fifteen-year-old daughter, Lea begins to wonder about their decision. The ex-pat compound has developed a subculture of its own, one that is only remotely similar to anything that Lea has previously experienced. The ex-pat wives, although they are not forced to give up any of their rights, are almost eager to spend their days in mindless cooking classes, ladies groups, and puttering around the house while their husbands do the important work. These women may not be quite of the Stepford Wife variety, but they are most definitely the next best thing. Lea, a magazine writer in her old life, is not content to live that way for the two-year term of her husband’s work contract, and almost immediately, her attitude brings her to the attention of a handful of likeminded spirits – and a few sinister people who want to keep her from stirring up trouble. The Sand Men is one of those thrillers in which the good guys find it almost impossible to tell the difference between ally and enemy – and as players come and go, Fowler makes certain that his readers face the same dilemma. When a long series of very strange accidents begins to claim the lives of those Lea feels closest to, she senses that time is running out for her. She either has to figure out what is happening and stop it, or she has to run for her life. But whom can she trust? As Joseph Heller put it in Catch-22, “Just because you’re paranoid doesn’t mean they aren’t after you.”The Sand Men provides quite a thriller ride for those able to reach the proper level of suspended disbelief. If you’re willing to go there, this one might be for you.

Written and illustrated as a personal homage from one artist to another. 'When you have a Goffstein Book' is also a tribute to children's literature and a love of books. Originally written in 1996 it is being published for the first time in 2015. The simple pen and ink drawings and prose deceptively underscore more complex reflections about creativity and life. Enjoyable for both children and adults.

By waynefitz The 10th Irish Division was formed in Ireland on the 21st August 1914 as part of Kitchener's New Army. It was the first Irish Division in the British Army comprising of regiments that included, the Connaught Rangers, The Royal Dublin Fusiliers, the Inniskilling Fusiliers, the Leinster Regiment, the Royal Munster Fusiliers, the 5th Royal Irish Regiment and the 6th Royal Irish Rifles. After a year of training, the Division received orders to prepare for active service overseas, their destination: the Gallipoli peninsula. The men of the 10th Irish Division were to find themselves embroiled in one of the bloodiest campaigns of the Great War. The Division were ordered to capture the peninsula, open the Dardanelles Straits and relieve pressure on the British and Anzac troops that were pinned down on the beach head. The book covers the Divisions deployment in Gallipoli, Salonika-Macedonia and Palestine with the author mentioning various actions such as the landings by the Royal Dublin Fusiliers on “V” beach where they suffered 70% casualties. They received 6 Victoria crosses for this valiant action.Author Phil Tomkins has written a detailed, yet condensed account of the history of the 10th Division during the Great War that acts as an excellent introduction to the subject. As reviewed by Paul O’Brien, in the October 2015 issue of An Cosantóir (The Defender) - the official magazine of the Irish Defence Forces - dfmagazine.ie

The must-read prequel to the “strange and unexpected” (Audrey Niffenegger) and “highly original” (Seattle Times) zombie love story Warm Bodies—the New York Times bestseller and inspiration for the hit film—from the critically acclaimed author whose clever debut turned the classic horror story on its head. The end of the world didn’t happen overnight. After years of societal breakdowns, wars and quakes and rising tides, humanity was already near the edge. Then came a final blow no one could have expected: all the world’s corpses rising up to make more. Born into this bleak and bloody landscape, twelve-year-old Julie struggles to hold on to hope as she and her parents drive across the wastelands of America, a nightmarish road trip in search of a new home. Hungry, lost, and scared, sixteen-year-old Nora finds herself her brother’s sole guardian after her parents abandon them in the not-quite-empty ruins of Seattle. And in the darkness of a forest, a dead man opens his eyes. Who is he? What is he? With no clues beyond a red tie and the letter “R,” he must unravel the grim mystery of his existence—right after he learns how to think, how to walk, and how to satisfy the monster howling in his belly. The New Hunger is a glimpse of the past and a path to an astonishing future…

Review “Readers will immediately fall victim to this fascinating world of the walking corpse. Marion’s ability to develop characters with real meat on their bones leaves a lasting impression. In sum, this is Night of the Living Dead good.” (Electric Review)

Warm Bodies became a #5 New York Times bestseller and inspired a major Hollywood film adaptation. It has been translated into twenty-five languages worldwide. Isaac lives in Seattle with his cat and a beloved cactus, writing fiction and music, and taking pictures of everything. Visit www.IsaacMarion.com for more on these endeavors.

Excerpt. © Reprinted by permission. All rights reserved. The New Hunger THIS IS NOT the beginning. The beginning is darkness and fire, microbes and worms—the very first of us, killing by the billions on their way up the ladder. There is little to learn from the beginning. We prefer the middle, where things are getting interesting. Who are we? We are everyone. We are every thought and action. Time is just a filing system for the vastness of our Library, but we linger in the present with the unfinished books, watching them write themselves. The world is changing. The globe is bulging and straining, erupting and blazing with miracles, and we don’t know what shape it will take when it cools. Even with all of history inside us, we don’t know, and this is a little scary. So we narrow our focus. We zoom in on a country, then a city, then the white rooftop of a stadium, where three young people are sitting on a blanket. The sky is dark. They are the only ones awake for miles around. It’s hard to catch a sunrise in the middle of summer—the sun barely sets before bouncing back up—but today the need to see beauty was urgent. They have seen too much ugliness. Their lives are smeared with it like blood and shit, so thick they can barely breathe, so today they’re on the roof in the cold morning air, waiting for the sun to wash them. Who are these people? Why do they interest us? They are not special—no one is—but there is something in them that draws our gaze. A short, pale girl full of strange dreams. A tall, dark girl with a promise carved on her heart. And a half-alive man whose head buzzes with voices, who talks to us and listens without knowing we exist. We want them to know we exist. We want them to read our Library and share it with the world, because there is nothing sweeter than being known. But first we have to know them. We are books that read our readers, not a story but a conversation, and we open it with a question: Who are you? We circle around them, peering in the windows of their souls. What’s in there? Where did it come from? Show us and we’ll show you. Up and down the Library, from its bright ceiling to its black basement, pages begin to flutter.

Julie is a 12-year-old girl taking a trip with her parents. The world has changed and she has seen her nightmares come alive. Her parents are trying to find a safe place for them to settle.Nora is only sixteen. She and her brother Addis have one purpose in life: to stay alive. Finding food and refuge is a priority. Nothing else matters. And of course we get some R. He has just become one of them. He's trying to understand this new world he has woken up to. He knows he's different. He can feel it but he can also feel the hunger calling.Great way to introduce these characters. I liked how their lives intertwined years before. The horror of the new world is there but also the hope. Hope like a lingering spark...If I had to pick a favorite character in this novella it has to be Nora. She was a survivor but she was just a teen, doing the best she could to keep the only family she has alive. Her love for her brother was deep. She would do anything for him. She also recognized that not all zombies were the same and just maybe not everything was lost. Did she make a mistake? As a side note, I'm super excited for the sequel!4.5/5 Fangs

Carman I received this Complimentary copy through a Goodreads Giveaway. *Galley Giveaway* - A special THANK YOU to Atria Books! This was my first book that I have read by Isaac Marion and my first zombie book ever. This is a prequel to the Warm Bodies book. I think Isaac Marion is a very well writer and has created an amazing novella. Although, I have yet to still read Warm Bodies, I have not seen the movie either. I went into this book blindly not really knowing much about it. I loved this book. I would rate it 4.5/5 stars. I like how Isaac Marion has put in multiple peoples perspectives in this book. You get so much more to the story that way. The characters that were created in this book is so lovable. This book focuses on three main groups of people. First you have Nora & Addis; Julie, John & Audrey and then "The Tall Man"- later known as R, nearing the end of the book. This book focuses on the beginning. Everyone is just trying to figure things out, find food, stay safe and figure out what they should go next. I was a little surprised with some of the language used, but it wasn't too bad. I think that the only one thing that this book could of used was finding out how R died. It kept me wondering through the whole thing. But all in all it was still an amazing read. So good, but a little sad. This novella sucked me in from the start and I could not put it down. The end left me for wanting to read more. I cannot wait to read more amazing writes by Isaac Marion.Nora & Addis- Brother and sister. Nora 16, Addis 7. Alone together, fending for themselves after being abandoned by their parents. Trying to stay safe and find food. Traveling by foot, but no real destination in mind.Julie, John & Audrey- Family. Julie 12 years old. Traveling to Seattle to find some good people. Wants a safe place that they can call home."The Tall Man" *R- Newly born zombie. He knows there is something inside him that needs to be satisfied. He knows that something is different about him but can't seem to figure it out.

Not Quite Up To Expectations By Zaltair Of course I haven't read the sequel to Warm Bodies yet, but just from going from the prequel, I'm not sure how needed this piece is to the story of R and Julie. The beginning and the end is confusing because I have no idea who is talking (which I do hope and expect to be explained in the sequel to come) but it served to only frustrate me rather than intrigue. Everything else was expected and I already could guess had happened. I was hoping to see Julie enter the compound and be with R as he found his airport and began his collections. Though I love the writing style of Isaac Marion, he always has his funny moments, and I love Warm Bodies, I was disappointed by this book as a whole.

This story is about the author’s great-great uncle, his experiences and the people he may have encountered during the first two years of the Civil War (which was also the last two years of his life)- while serving as a private in the Confederate army. The story is historically correct – at least as to some of the names and the chronology of the events described, and the best of my ability – but pure fiction as to the narrative.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Garmon is good--very good! By Zend Lakdavala Ken Burns would have included some of this book's stories in his PBS Civil War series. This is a real story of a real person who spent the final two years of his life as a Confederate soldier. It personalizes the war. It gives the reader close, intimate involvement with a young man who finds himself in a war that he didn't choose. Civil War historians and those who are interested in stories about the Civil War will find some good things to read about in this book. I wish the book had been longer and had gone into even more detail, but what is included is interesting and sometimes emotional. I like the use of personal letters and journal entries to carry the story. The unstated, unemotional nature of the entire story makes it more moving. I think any reader -- not just someone who is interested in the Civil War -- would like this as a true story that has good insights into human nature, and how it must have been for a young man to experience the horrors of war just as he was becoming an adult. He is a character who will be remembered. The author does a good job of sticking with a true narrative, although he embellishes some of the action to give the reader a feeling of having been there. I hope to see more books by this author. This is a big hit for me, and it is well worth the price.

I appreciated how he handled the spiritual part and tied the book in with its Scriptural title. "Sister Teresa" was precious and was so effective in drawing people to God's Word, the Bible, and thus to our Savior. He did some wise explaining of some hard Scriptures to understand in a brief way. The bad guy role was handled perfectly - obsessed to the very end with getting rid of George; to the cost of his own life. His idea/opinion regarding the Civil War, to me, were right on and stated concisely. We knew from the beginning that George had a short life, but couldn't imagine how the author would depict the end of his life. I will be so glad to recommend this book to all my reader friends and family. I consider it a 5 star book!!

The development of the Characters was superb, making you feel that you actually knew them. It also appeared that the book is historically correct which in itself must have taken days to research. This was one of those books which you don't want to put down or to end. I am anxiously awaiting the author's next work, it will be difficult task to surpass this effort. I am sorry that it appears that this book will not lead into a series.

Lost for Words is Rufus Skeens’ first volume of poetry. His poetry has been widely published in regional poetry journals, including the Sow’s Ear Review, A! Magazine for the Arts, Red River Review, Now & Then, and Appalachian Heritage, to name a few. Skeens is a retired coal miner who bases his poetry from a working man’s perspective. In his writings, Skeens attempts to cover moments in intense analysis, rather than attempting to write about disparate incidents spanning days, weeks, or years. Thus, Skeens’ viewpoint often radically diverges from the common poet’s rambling attempts to describe time and place with clarity. Skeens believes he can competently describe the intensity inherent in a moment, creating a mood that’s ultimately sensitive, yet vivid in detail. As a backdrop for Skeens’ poetry, he makes use of his life experiences growing up, and working in the coalfields of Southern Appalachia. Poverty, sweat, sorrow---Skeens has lived it, and rather than allow the region’s constraints to limit his imagination, he has used his hard-earned experience to give birth to poetry. His poetry. Skeens has won numerous awards for his writing skills, but takes far more pride in watching someone read and enjoy his poems than focus on who has won this or won that. Mr. Skeens currently resides in Bristol, Virginia. He came of age in the vast mountains of Grundy, Virginia, where coal is the king who has been dethroned.

Lost for Words: Selected Poems, by Rufus Skeens, James Ward Kirk

Review "Lost For Words is not a description I would have tagged Rufus A Skeens with. Reading his collection of poetry you find yourself traveling, seeing the small, sometimes surprising beauty's of nature and of the Appalachias. But then...so much more; life, death, Black Lung, a collection of moments and places. Some whimsical, some poignant but all seized and held up for us to see in a different light, a different angle. Skeens poetry resists being rubber stamped or wrestled into a certain "form". A perfect example is the first few lines in the title poem;"Slugs trace odd glyphs on the concrete wallGrandma had to sprinkle table salt on her porch to discourage any messages from the other side....."Yes...it really IS that good. Allow yourself the pleasure of reading this; Lost For Words by Rufus A. Skeens" -- Jaye Tomas - author of Carnevale & Nocturnes  "Skeens' poetry is penned with a deft eloquence, painting bucolic snapshots of Appalachian life and lore. Hounds, guns, coal, faith, and mortality, all brought forth through an idyllic and contemplative scope that soothes as much as it stimulates. Lost for Words is a virtuoso debut. - Benjamin Blake, author of Southpaw Nights."

From the Inside Flap "Lost for words is a magnificent collection and Rufus Skeen's poetry is like a beautiful river, both strong and delicate, changing with the seasons - sometimes welcoming, sometimes dangerous, but always fascinating. A must read."   Seb Doubinsky "These are the poems I seek. These are the poems that resonate with me; that speak to me. I demand highly literate, technically adept, and intelligent verse when I read poetry and this is exactly what I got upon reading Rufus Skeen's debut collection, 'Lost For Words.' Shades of Merwin, Sandburg, Frost, Gunn . . . these poems are that good I compare them with the greats. I feel privileged to have read this special and powerful collection. If you love good poetry, that is equal parts sensitive and cerebral, philosophical and celebratory, hopeful and ruminative - look no further. A wonderful collection. --  William Cook, author of Corpus Delicti, and Gaze into the Abyss: The Poetry of Jim Morrison.

A special collection of poetry By Wookie I had the privilege of being one of the first to read this stunning debut collection of poetry from Rufus Skeens. As soon as I read this work I knew it was special. There are many poets but few who can write poetry with an eloquence imbued with a humanitarian essence. Such is 'Lost For Words. Here is what I voluntarily wrote as a 'blurb' for this fine collection, I hope you will be encouraged to purchase a copy and that you might agree with me that my sentiments are proved accurate: "These are the poems I seek. Lost for Words is an excellent read for an authentic view of life in Appalachia By Amazon Customer Lost for Words is a unique collection of poems that eloquently capture the many facets of life in Appalachia. Rufus Skeens has an amazing ability to paint a picture with words in such a way the reader can clearly visualize the experience. His work shows the many complex layers of life in an area which is all too often quickly dismissed as simple. Skeens work speaks to me because it's not just well written, it's authentic from someone who has truly lived the Appalachian life. I highly recommend giving it a read whether you're a fan of poetry or if you just want a greater appreciation of what it's like to live in Appalachia.
