Not Your Typical 'Man Meets God' Sci-Fi Novel By Dawn Dolly Webb It's rare that I read a sci-fi book with a political undertone and walk away thinking "Holy smokes- that was a good book." The CERN Revelation is a book based on the idea that man has created technology capable of unleashing supernatural powers- including a God-like spiritual being far from our typical realm of existence.This concept has been done before, but all other books I've read in this basic genre were done one of two ways.1) They were done in a way that was corny. They weren't thought out well. They had very half-thought concepts that were confusing to follow or were too focused on the 'faith' undertone of the book.or2) They were more fantasy-oriented than sci-fi. Creating a storyline that was more focused on the supernatural than the human characters, to where you were no longer in a realistic world, but rather a more 'fairytale-esque' one.This book did neither of those things. It was written in a way that follows human characters. Paul Decker and his accomplice Lizbeth. They're the main focus of the story and much of the supernatural is done in a very realistic way. A way that Twilight-esque feel rather than a fantasy-ridden read. This book also tries to veer away from the faith-based undertone. The goal isn't to make you question or believe in religion, but rather to simply think about it. It's a book with a political undertone- asking you how far should we as a society let technology go? And what would happen if we could confirm or without a doubt deny the existence of a God?It's just a very thought-provoking read that really makes you think. The storyline is good, a nice pace, and keeps you moving with a few interesting twists and turns. But the true glory of this book comes from how vividly it forces you to evaluate things and to think through 'what if' scenarios. I loved it, and I recommended it to my book club. Discussing it with others will be such a blast- because there is SO much to discuss in this book.

Not even fear of the antichrist. He links up with Natasha, an intelligent Russian who is studying anti-matter, black holes, and she can hold her own in discussions with the most talented scientists working at CERN. She and Paul must prevent the large Hadron Collider from operating at it's maximum energy level, so the antichrist stays a phantom. Or do they? A great novel. Full of tension, action, and a surprise ending.

The CERN Revelations is the fourth in the series. In this book Paul Decker teams up with Lizbeth to fight a supernatural adversary.It not the usual enemy you see in a political thriller and adds a nice twist to the tale.

Michael wants his biological son in his life despite 3 years earlier given up all parental rights. Stan is committed to not letting that happen because David is his son; but Erica is not making it easy. Stan is a wimp in love. Erica is growing cruel. I liked how Stan and his father developed a relationship and the support his father provided. I enjoyed how the story developed that Stan and Erica both had something on the other that each wanted kept hidden. Erica desperation was a shocker; and it brought sense to the entire storyline between the two books. I especially loved the ending that included Serena. There are some grammatical errors. I read this book in one day. It is a very good read. Kudos RM Johnson!!

I wish I had known that this was a sequel before reading it, but I didn't feel lost and was able to keep up with the story. Although I was able to predict a few things that was going to happen, which I'm able to do 95% of the time, I was still enthralled in the story and it's fast pace. RM has always been a great storyteller and that hasn't changed in this novel. My only issue with this novel is that there were quite a few typos and errors which I would not expect from RM. What happened to editors and proofreaders? Both are needed ALWAYS I don't care how many books you write. Lots of errors, especially silly ones, can really detract from the story. All in all good read.

I loved it because some books are so predictable but not the work of RM Johnson. He always come with something fresh and exciting. He has become one of my favorite author's. If you have not read anything by RM Johnson then you are missing out on a very talented writer. I have read every last one of his books and I must say he gets better and better with each and every book he puts out. By Cathy Northup Such an awesome series from this author !Book 3: Lightening brings Alex and his group of friends together trying to find a cure for someone in their small group, but in doing so.. they learn new and more dangerous aspects of the zombie type virus that has taken so much from them. But with a close encounter from Patient Zero, Alex and friends continue to fight back and are able to secure a possible cure for those that are still human.I love how Shaun keeps the pace of this book, as well as Rain and Storm at a steady pace of reading and it doesn't stop! He brings in new characters and blends them in so that they are all working for the same thing.. their lives. Alex, who is the main character in all of the books in this series goes from no confidence at all, to becoming a very good leader. One that you would want to follow.As with Rain and Storm the editing in Lightening is very good.. I have yet to see or read any. Also there is some language .. but not much.Thank you Shaun Harbinger for such an awesome series, and I am waiting patiently waiting for book 4: Wildfire.

By Terri King I waited patiently for this one to come out and I was well rewarded for my patience.Before I go on, I want to apologize to the author as I have just discovered that reviews posted directly from my Kindle do not appear to be posting at all.This book continues the fantastic level of storytelling that I have come to expect from Mr. Harbinger. I can honestly say it is a refreshing take on how the hero of a story should be. The character has progressed as one would expect in real life, not a sudden superhero but one who developed as what can only be explained as how a 'normal' person would. I have only read a few others that presented human behaviour as accurately as this book does. The depth and breadth of the other characters ensures that the reader will stay entertained from the first page to the last. Excellent book and I highly recommend it.

Alex, the narrator of the series, is still searching for his brother Joe and their parents, but he finds himself on a mission to raid a government research lab for a vaccine that can reverse the hybrid mutation.The author, Shaun Harbinger, has improved his style since the second book. It's no longer a zombie story...there are mutations galore, and a people-versus-government mentality. Harbinger taps into the classic horror theme, while terrorizing readers with one nightmare after another.Looking forward to the fourth book, coming out November 2015.

Massey When we think of Andersonville, we tend to think of the suffering of long ago, and the rows and rows of grave markers. Only opened a year and a half before the war ended, over forty five thousand prisoners were held here at some point. Of this number, over thirteen thousand died in their horrid existence.One hundred and fifty years removed from the suffering and pain, we tend to gloss over the events of yesteryear. While Andersonville is a national cemetery, and a national park, it contains many monuments and sculptures. These reflect the sentiment of the Union supporters that began the effort in the 1890’s to make sure the nation never forgot. The beauty of the monuments and the story they tell is phenomenal.Today’s society is more inclined to appreciate the art, than the story. This book does a wonderful job weaving it all together as a “story for the ages” unfolds. It tells how the monuments, which are now absolutely considered works of art, came to exist. The veterans and women’s relief corps of the north worked tirelessly to see Andersonville brought to the forefront in the effort to save the memory of the struggle.The U.S. Army and Clara Barton identified the graves of those who had perished in Andersonville prison. As the promotions for the books says “the former prisoners expressed in granite their sorrow and gratitude for those who died or survived the prison camp.” States were asked to dedicate memorials honoring their sacrifice to the war. Many held contests offering up the design of that states monument. Artist’s and granite companies across the country participated.Southerners strongly resisted making Andersonville a park because they felt unfairly blamed for what happened there. They were right in their feelings, and the book looks at this side of the story. It gives us a glimpse that all prisoner of war camps during the Civil War were bad places no matter the side.The book brings forth the beautiful side of an ugly story. It takes the reader through the evolution from a land of suffering, and brings us to the modern pristine park. It has photographs throughout with descriptions and details of that photo. It gives great insight into the design of these monuments. There are accountings from the veterans who survived the events to tell their story.Stacy Reaves does a wonderful job telling the story of immortalizing Andersonville. This book belongs in your collection.

Van Gogh and Nature at the Clark By Kenneth Hughes It is surprising to realize that among all the great countryside painters of Impressionist and Post-Impressionist France, Vincent van Gogh was the only real country boy. Monet was a Parisian and Pissarro was from Charlotte Amelie, and even if one goes back a generation or two in the landscape tradition to Daubigny or Corot (also Paris natives), or canvasses the birth places of the major Barbizon painters, one finds mainly urban addresses, again mostly in Paris but also in Nantes, Sèvres, Bordeaux, Valenciennes, etc. Among the principal figures, only Courbet and Millet share van Gogh’s rural credentials, and they were of course among his favorite painters. Vincent himself was born and grew up in the overwhelmingly agricultural province of Brabant in the southern Netherlands, spent all his formative years surrounded by the natural settings of the countryside and did not encounter a city until he was sixteen years old. Those rural roots stayed with him all his life, and although you could take the man out of the marshes and pine woods of his childhood and youth, you could not take them out of the man; his dedication—perhaps even “devotion” is not too strong a word—to nature was probably the primary characteristic of his life and art, and his sensitivity to nature was so extreme that it amounted to something like an identification with it. He himself thought that this sensitivity was the cause of his mental deterioration; toward the end of his life, while in voluntary commitment in the mental asylum at Saint-Rémy, he wrote in answer to an inquiry, “The emotions that take hold of me when I am confronted by nature can sometimes lead me to a state of total collapse, resulting in a period of several weeks in which I am incapable of doing any work.” The connection between nature, painting and Vincent’s mental state—which seems undeniable—is in fact the subject of the most recent foray into his biography, Edwin Mullins’s “Van Gogh: The Asylum Year” (2015—see the review on this website), in which that statement of Vincent’s is heavily weighted (148). The extent to which we can take such a self-diagnosis at face value is open to question, especially since at that point the artist was desperately trying to find an explanation for his faltering sanity. However, there is no question at all about the extraordinary importance of nature in his life and art.So it is high time for an exhibition such as this one at the Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute in Williamstown, Massachusetts (from June to September 2015). It is apparently the first major exhibition to concentrate specifically on this theme, and it is in every respect a significant event, gathering fifty works from over thirty private and institutional collections. Richard Kendall, a curator at large at the Clark, is the exhibition’s chief curator and the principal contributor to this catalogue that accompanies it. He said recently in an interview that the idea for the exhibition came to him as he was re-reading Vincent’s letters in the six-volume illustrated and annotated edition and was struck by how “rather obsessively” van Gogh uses the word “nature” there ("The Boston Globe," May 17, 2015). Dr. Kendall recruited Chris Stolwijk and Sjraar van Heugten, both former heads of collections at the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam and two of the most widely respected van Gogh scholars, to co-curate with him and write essays for the volume. There are altogether five essays, and they are generally chronologically arranged. “How Nature Speaks” is Dr. Stolwijk’s examination of the years 1881-1885, in which he points to the religious bases of Vincent’s appreciation of nature in the “Groningen theology” of his father’s ministry and to the boy’s surprisingly wide acquaintance with botany, entomology and ornithology as evidenced in the details of his early drawings and in the sometimes quite lengthy descriptions in his letters. In “Nature and the South,” the longest of the texts, Dr. van Heugten analyzes the Arles and Saint-Rémy years (1888-90) closely following Vincent’s appreciation of the Provençal light, the new types of botanical subjects that became available to him, and the rapturous pantheistic feelings that he wrote of in his letters. There is very close attention to the new subjects here, the sunflowers, cypresses, olive trees, wheat fields, etc. The author demonstrates how each of the new subjects undergoes an evolution toward the more highly stylized as the series progresses, and this very close attention to the details of the works enables him to suggest some new sequences and reorder some probable dates in their creation. Dr. Kendall himself contributes three essays. “Nature and the City” looks at the two years Vincent spent in Paris and the kinds of nature paintings he made there: flowers, the private gardens and allotments on Montmartre, the parks and public gardens. This sticking to nature in the heart of a modern bustling city, he indicates, is evidence of the depth and breadth of his commitment: nature is for van Gogh part religion, poetry and philosophy on the one hand, and part natural science and practical reality on the other. In “The Last Months” (Auvers, 1890), he finds the artist pushing himself ever farther into natural themes, with hardly a canvas lacking flowers, trees, or farmland—these include the great “double-square” canvases with their heightened palette of bright greens and yellows and their extreme stylization. Perhaps the most unusual material is in Dr. Kendall’s more general essay on “Van Gogh, Nature, and Science,” in which he continues his study of the effects of Darwinism and natural history on visual culture in the nineteenth century, which has previously resulted in interesting perspectives on Monet and others. Here he emphasizes Vincent’s reception of the tendency of his time and place to embrace the hitherto specialized science of natural history as popular culture and the emergence of “amateur” scientists and of books and visual aids tailored to their education. As a youth, van Gogh was fascinated by such material, and the writer indicates a number of sources that he eagerly turned to for enlightenment on such subjects.I found these essays to be interesting, informative, and very well written. They are accompanied by excellent illustrations, of which there are a total of 192, including the catalogue reproductions. The photographs are arranged throughout the volume in order of the discussion, which relieves the reader of much page-flipping. The great majority of non-catalogue reproductions are also by van Gogh, although there are appropriate reproductions of works by Gauguin, Bernard, Monet, Monticelli, and others. This is a copiously illustrated catalogue; there is hardly a page without some reproduction or other, and some of the paintings are only rarely reproduced. The letters are all cited from the six-volume edition, and the art is referenced to both the Faille and Hulsker catalogues raisonnés. There is no bibliography, but the notes to the texts provide abundant references for further reading, and take into consideration more than the usual amount of Dutch-language material. This is a very satisfying traversal of a central concern of van Gogh’s—perhaps of _the_ central concern. The exhibition’s sole venue is the Clark; it's a pity that it will not travel, but those who will not be able to see it in person can be thankful that it has been captured in this excellent and beautifully illustrated catalogue. Of course there is no end to the books on van Gogh, but this one is quite special and a “must-have” for his aficionados.

Much in this book was new to me: the drawing that was a study for the peacock moth in the painting on the front cover, the Arles picture with falling rain painted with a nearly-dry brush, most of the info. in the chapter about science, & many paintings from the Kroller-Muller Museum & private collections.

I enjoyed reading the extracts from Van Gogh's letters and seeing the color reproductions of the paintings he was discussing. Very enjoyable read. I only wish I could have seen the exhibition.

Zane Grey became one of the first millionaire authors. With veracity and emotional intensity, he connected with his millions of readers worldwide, during peacetime and war, and inspired many Western writers who followed him. Zane Grey was a major force in shaping the myths of the Old West and he helped transition the written Western into other media. He was the author of over 90 books, some published posthumously and/or based on serials originally published in magazines. His total book sales exceed 40-million.

He not only wrote Westerns, but he also authored two hunting books, six children-s books, two baseball books, and eight fishing books. Many of them became bestsellers.- From 1917-1926, Grey was in the top ten best-seller list nine times, which required sales of over 100,000 copies each time.-Even after his death, Harper had a stockpile of manuscripts and continued to publish a new title each year until 1963. During the 1940-s and afterwards, paperback sales of Grey-s books exploded.

Johnson First let me say I am am avid western book reader and author myself. I regard Zane Grey's Call of the Canyon as one of the most powerful romance books ever written. I know many people who regard this and Rider's of the Purple Sage, to be Zane Grey's best books, and amoung the best adventure fiction books ever. Each year visitors by the thousands do their best to retrace the footsteps of these eastern lovers who had Gone West. It is a tale that never seems to go out of fashion, and indeed seems to fulfill some great need in each reader lucky enough to hear the Call of the Canyon.

16 of 17 people found the following review helpful. Pleasantly Surprised By rakel I wasn't sure what to expect from Call of the Canyon. I've download a lot of free titles to my Kindle, assuming that most are going to be terrible. This was a pleasant surprise! Not knowing much about the author or the period in which this book was written, I eventually determined that it was likely to be written around the same time period of the story. The biggest give-away to me was the at-times lengthy social commentary, which I could have done with less of. Not that I agree nor disagree with the sentiments shared by the author, the way it was handled felt a little out of place.I will also add that I found myself skimming the lengthy descriptions of Arizona, mostly because I've never been and some of the imagery was a little hard for me to visualize. They say a picture is worth a thousand words, and I definitely feel like that applies here.Overall, it was a great love story (which I admit I am a sucker for) that was hard for me to put down, and at the end, I wished it would continue. Because of that, I've already downloaded a handful of other works by Zane Grey to read.

I was surprised that such a "vintage" book would be so relevant to current day. It is full of beautiful description and passion for the West and its scenery. I enjoyed the well written story and was surprised by the woman's journey into a life with purpose. Will read more of this series of books.
