A wonderful collection of stories and novellas By Ethan Fresh off the heels of his well received novel Above All Men, author Eric Shonkwiler presents a collection of short stories titled Moon Up, Past Full. I was made aware of Shonkwiler by Lori at The Next Best Book Club on GoodReads. The club hosts a monthly author/reader discussion in which several copies of a work are provided to readers and the author joins in the dialogue about that book. It has been a great source of discovery for new books, a great place for intelligent discussion, and an overall melting pot of diverse ideas. As soon as I read the description of Shonkwiler's collection, I knew I wanted to be a part of this discussion.My favorite story from the collection, Rural Tendencies, chronicles one man's descent into a drug-filled life of crime and lust. I was completely drawn to the tragic way that the main character's one night of snorting lines at a party evolved into cooking meth in his basement and having an affair with a drug dealer's girlfriend. Shonkwiler's unflinching honesty and crisp words gave a depth and reality to this story and really captured the harsh lifestyle of a drug dealer.Beyond that selection, Moon Up, Past Full contains other unique stories and novellas that are all connected by the Midwest setting that Shonkwiler depicts through his powerful prose. His writing has been compared to that of Cormac McCarthy, a comparison that both speaks to his undeniable skill with the written word and one that gives you an idea of the kind of stories that he excels at. Like McCarthy, Shonkwiler eschews the use of quotation marks and keeps his text clear and easy to read. More importantly, he writes stories about everyday people dealing with their own personal crisis. Whether it is a young lady dealing with noises in her head or the more pressing end of times, Shonkwiler masterfully writes stories that jump from the page and are an absolute joy to read.

Leaves you wanting more By Shawn A book of novellas and short stories doesn't fit well with Amazon's cookie-cutter approach to rating books, so allow me to elaborate a little here: This book, the second by the author, reads like a collection of well-curated excerpts from longer works by an accomplished author. Some leave the reader with the sense that he knows the story to its end, but some - most, maybe - leave the reader wishing for more.The opening story, "Gripping the Heel," is a short tale from the perspective of a ne'er-do-well son who lives in the shadow of a tragic childhood event. In ten pages or so, the author deftly makes the reader feel as if he has insider knowledge of the family history and to deeply identify with the characters. The story ends as the central character tries to escape the shadow once and for all, but the reader is left with the dreaded knowledge that he never will. A terrific and classically executed short story.My favorite story was "Nettle Creek Cemetery." This story, less than one page long, stuck with me for several days. Evocative of Cormac McCarthy's "No Country for Old Men," the depth of the story defies its length exponentially. If I type one more sentence in this review, it threatens to be nearly as long as the story, and yet I found myself exploring its theme in my head for hours. I can't wait for the movie.The title for the book comes from the story "GO21" which is one of its longer stories. Obviously influenced by the zombie craze of American pop culture, this story is more about a micro-society's reaction to the unknown. A good, solid story with perhaps one or two too many characters for my taste."Last Snow" seems like it could be a vignetted prequel to the author's first novel "Above All Men." Set 20 minutes into the future, it is a good study on how an enormous problem like climate change might play out in the mundane lives of average people. The story begins by giving the reader a glimpse of both the current situation of its main character and proceeds to unveil a little about the situation of the planet. I was reminded again of Cormac McCarthy when I read this story, particularly of the scene in "The Road" where the father gives his son a can of Coke so he can taste it for the first and last time.These are just my thoughts about a few of the 14 very different stories contained in the book. If you enjoy dark stories about dysfunctional people, families and societies, or if you just enjoy reading well crafted prose, this book will not disappoint you.

By Amazon Customer I've always considered myself a writer, and have written over a thousand published works in books, magazines, comics books, and online...but never a song. It's an area I wouldn't mind reaching into, so I thought I'd consult an expert.As a life coach and a specialist in rapid skill acquisition one of the first steps I recommend to my clients when learning something new is to find a written work by an expert. So, I followed my own advice. As to the expert, the author Rake Nelson has the chops. From what I can find on him, he's been writing and creating music since he was a wee lad.I enjoyed the way the book was laid out. I'm used to writing non-fiction and you don't just sit and crank out songs the same way I rattle off facts and figures, so the author started out with finding inspiration.This is a great basic book to get you started if songwriting is something you want to try. I'd recommend you give it a try and see where it takes you.

After a stove pipe fire erupts downstairs everyone must escape out a small cabin window onto a roof and jump down. Shannon suffers burns to the side of her head, cheek, neck and right arm. Christopher dies in the fire and she watches in despair as their cabin and barn burn to the ground clutching her daughter. Emma is devastated over the loss of her father. Shannon must find someone to take her and her daughter in as winter approaches. She and her Emma are taken in by their good friend Cheryl Liley. It takes months for Shannon to heal from her burns however, accepting the loss of the man she loved and the father of Emma will take longer. She feels that no man will ever want to marry her now and that she’ll have to raise her daughter alone. When spring arrives, Shannon remembers that her husband has an older brother, Lance in Garnet, Montana. He agrees to take her and her child in. With the help of the towns Parson, Thomas O’Malley, townsfolk’s raise the funds needed to help get Shannon and Emma to Montana. But the last leg of her journey won’t be easy, to say the least. Indians, grizzly bear, wolves, highwaymen and a rancher who betrays her will whittle away at the last bit of hope Shannon has for them to reach Garnet alive. But to her dismay when she finally reaches the town, she learns her husband’s brother, Lance died in a mine cave-in. Now they’re broke and camped at the edge of town and believe there’s no hope left. But the town’s Reverend talks to Kenneth Buchanan, a farmer who agrees to take her and her Emma into his home. But the women of Garnet don’t like the fact they’re living together and they attack her. So to keep the peace, the reverend marries the couple, ‘out of convenience.’ Can Kenneth and Shannon live under the same roof married but just friends or will he see beyond her scars and see the love she has to give him? At last count he has twenty-two titles notched on his belt—all Western Romances, most of them located in Colorado in the area roughly between Crested Butte and Carbondale that boomed briefly in the 1890s. A number of Cook's locales in Colorado and Montana are now ghost towns and the people whom Cook writes about are ghosts of a sort, the heroes and villains that stride the Old West myths of John Wayne movies.Cook has an interesting twist, however: in the main, his heroes are heroines. In “I Miss My Pa the Most!” Shannon O'Shea has reached Colorado with her husband and daughter, Emma, as part of a wagon train of settlers who are either stopping at Denver or going on to places farther west. The O'Sheas hope to settle on a ranch in Marble, and though most folks are friendly and generous, trouble always seems to be just around the corner from a nearby tavern. And then there is the added danger of wolves getting into the chicken pen and bears in the blueberry patch. Fortunately, Shannon can handle a Winchester rifle or a Colt 45 Peacemaker when the occasion calls for it, which happens quite frequently.The author writes with authority about that part of the country and for the reader who becomes an avid follower of Cook's novels, there is the added pleasure of running into some of the same people met in other books. Unfortunately, the other thing that the reader will meet up with again, is Cook's total disregard for English grammar. How the author can have so little respectt for his story and the struggling reader is hard to imagine. No one can really edit his own writing as this reviewer knows only too well. We all make mistakes, but Cook seems to have no regard for either the story he is writing or the reader who is bravely trying to figure out what he means.Raymond Cook has an excellent website. I have bought several of this authors books and chose this book as the next one to read for several reasons. First, because of the title, then the summary, the book cover and lastly because of the length of the book, nearly 400 pages. I did read the comments made on this book and wasn't disappointed with the books I have read so far so I bought this one too.I'm happy to say in no way was I disappointed. This story is about love, tragedy, empathy, courage, conflict, betrayal, and of course a happy ending. All the elements that make a great read, right? I'm not a perfectionist. I don't expect a book to be flawlessly written, free of a typo or grammar mistake here and there. I've read books I have bought in bookstores that had both. Its the story, the plot and the characters and how they find their way into my heart that make me feel a book was good or just so-so.When I finished this story I was smiling, believing that with all this mother and child had to endure after the loss of her husband and father that they found happiness after they reached Montana journey.For those of you who read, not to nit pick at the occasional misspelled word or use of punctuation in the wrong place that doesn't hurt the stories meaning, you will not be disappointed in this book.

The author writes with sincere passion and authority about the West.Christopher O’Shea, his wife Shannon and eight year old daughter Emma manage to survive all the perils on a covered wagon trip from Nauvoo, Illinois west and set up ranching in the outskirts of Marble, Colorado. This tight knit little family has faced “cholera, smallpox, Indian attacks, drownings, injuries, dust storms, wildfires, tornadoes, rattlesnake bites and mountain avalanches”.There are many beautiful descriptive written scenes that are set off by breathtaking photography. Here are three of my favorites, but you will have to read the book to see the photos."As they walked through knee high wet grass the sound of rushing water got louder and louder. When they walked as far as they could go, they stopped and stared at the large creek that made a slight bend to their left. The sky was still mostly blue with patches of white clouds drifting south. It was a wide, deep and winding creek, sure to be filled with Rainbow, Brown or German trout Christopher thought.""Brush and young saplings lined the edge of the slow moving creek. Leonard followed a deer trail along the creek making his way down to the lake. When the lake came into sight, everyone was startled as a large bald eagle swooped right passed them and grabbed a fat trout just below the surface.""As it flew off with its meal Emma excitedly pointed and said, “I wanna catch a trout that size pa!” Suddenly everyone laughed. Now and then the family saw trout jumping out of the water though none were big fish. Finally Leonard called out and said, “Well let’s make our way back up to the cabin folks."The O’Shea family homestead on small piece of land containing old cabin and barn where they set out to make this country their home. Like all new settlers they have to live off the land and defend their property from both wild and human dangers. They are settling into their new life, enjoying the new friends, local community, a church and Emma even goes to school.Little did they know that their worst nightmare would be a fire. Christopher gives his life to let his wife and daughter escape the fire engulfing their cabin. Grief stricken Shannon sets out with her daughter for Montana where Christopher’s brother will take them in. The journey is rugged and dangerous and it is up to this strong woman to protect her daughter.Amidst the struggles comes so many heartwarming and beautiful moments between a father and his daughter, husband and wife and mother and daughter. There are new friends and a new beginnings. The characters, dialog and story are realistic to the time. There are nineteen breath taking photos throughout the story which show the beauty of the land and the abundance that is harvested from hard work.This is book 19 out of 24 Western Family Saga’s that you can enjoy through Kindle. Revisit the Wild West in its beauty and tragedy as Americans forge their way to a new life.Let me address a side issue. As a published author myself, I always read the reviews before I purchase a book. It is not unusual for readers who have never written a book to be over judgmental. I found the grammar and voice in this book to be consistent with the region of the country and time period. There are a couple of line spacing issues that in no way affect the story. If you like family stories of the Wild West, you will enjoy this book.Raymond Cook’s bio clearly states that he is a “62 year old disabled veteran”. Taking the Noli me tangere and Doubting Thomas episodes as a focal point, this study examines how visual representations of two of the most compelling and related Christian stories engaged with changing devotional and cultural ideals in Renaissance and Baroque Italy. This book reconsiders depictions of the ambiguous encounter of Mary Magdalene and Christ in the garden (John 20:11-19, known as the Noli me tangere) and that of Christ’s post-Resurrection appearance to Thomas (John 20:24-29, the Doubting Thomas) as manifestations of complex theological and art theoretical milieus. By focusing on key artistic monuments of the Italian Renaissance and Baroque periods, the authors demonstrate a relationship between the rise of skeptical philosophy and empirical science, and the efficacy of the senses in the construction of belief. Further, the authors elucidate the differing representational strategies employed by artists to depict touch, and the ways in which these strategies were shaped by gender, social class, and educational level. Indeed, over time St. Thomas became an increasingly public--and therefore masculine--symbol of devotional verification, juridical inquiry, and empirical investigation, while St. Mary Magdalene provided a more private model for pious women, celebrating, mostly behind closed doors, the privileged and active participation of women in the faith. The authors rely on primary source material--paintings, sculptures, religious tracts, hagiography, popular sermons, and new documentary evidence. By reuniting their visual examples with important, often little-known textual sources, the authors reveal a complex relationship between visual imagery, the senses, contemporary attitudes toward gender, and the shaping of belief. Further, they add greater nuance to our understanding of the relationship between popular piety and the visual culture of the period.
