"Looking for the Good" By Susan Whitcomb Winnetka 60093 is a well-written and refreshing window into the people, history and traditions that characterize this small Illinois village. Every town has unsung heroes -- humanitarians, innovators, artists, athletes and public servants, but we don’t usually get to learn their stories. What inspires them? Why do they do what they do? My favorite stories in the book are about people who use their skills and experience to help others: the energetic director of a youth organization, the inspiring music teacher, the doctor who gives his time to help babies with deformities. Ms. Marihugh’s thoughtful portraits of Winnetkans are inspiring and so is her preface to the book where she explains her motivation for compiling these stories in a blog – a deliberate decision to spend a year “looking for the good.” What if each of us spent a year looking for the good in our communities? I think we would create a world with less conflict, more compromise and infinitely more hope for the future.

I was very enticed in reading a wonderfully uplifting perspective of my home stomping grounds By Ingrid Harrison Growing up in this suburb myself, I was very enticed in reading a wonderfully uplifting perspective of my home stomping grounds. I was delightfully surprised at all the new things I learned. The stories were inspirational about the goodness of human nature. Lessons of following ones passions. Histories touching on Civil Rights issues. Refreshing accounts of people going above and beyond of what is expected of them in their line of work. A collection of heartfelt messages for pondering.

Everyone succumbed to its devastating effects–violence, loss of reason, intermittent sleep, and finally death. Inevitably, everyone fell asleep, except Art Sand, a doctor specializing in Alzheimer's Disease. Art Sand finds that an experimental drug can stave off the Death Sleep. Once fully awake, Art is horrified to discover a world ending as though Armageddon has arrived. As the chaos yields to quietude, Art discovers another survivor, a young girl named Maya who doesn’t need the drug to live. As Art and Maya search for answers, they encounter unexpected dangers. And they discover many more survivors. But are they a hostile, new race of human beings? A lyrical literary novel, A M M powerfully captures the stark landscape of a post–apocalyptic world, and the hope and nightmare of a survivor.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. A thrilling, chilling fictional SciFi ride that is as intense as it is thought-provoking By Meg A M M by Nick Totem reminded me quite a bit of I Am Legend by Richard Matheson, one of my all-time favorite books. Right out of the gate, the plot for A M M, as well as being in Art's head, is absolutely stressful, terrifying, and intriguing all at once. I didn't even realize I was gripping the book so tightly in anticipation until after I finished Chapter 3 (that was intense!). I was immediately invested in this clever and inventive book. I needed to know what was going on, what had already happened, and how Art and Maya were going to navigate through this world, now vastly different if every way. That is, navigate until there is no longer a life of which to drive through such a place. Mr. Totem writes in such an intellectual manner and he is remarkably talented in painting a picture of the scenes and making the characters very tangible; something I value a lot when reading a fictional piece in this genre. A M M also displayed shades of an intelligent and adept twist on The Walking Dead television plot in some places. Without revealing any spoilers, I have to say that I got chills when the meaning of the book's title is revealed, and Maya's story is just as compelling as the mystery of the Death Sleep. Despite a few typos, I cannot stress how much I thoroughly enjoyed A M M. Books that challenge the reader, leave room for interpretation and don't dumb down the premise or vernacular are worth having, and A M M by Nick Totem is undoubtedly a novel that owns this description. The final chapter was very fitting; not forced or sudden. The book had the perfect amount of closure and wonder. I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoyed the other works I've mentioned, as well as readers who appreciate great works of scientific fiction. Mr. Totem is a very gifted author and I expect to see more of his work on shelves. I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

By DOTRAZN Nick Totem's novel, AMM is a brilliant piece of work that layers a popular genre of a post-apocalyptic world with beautiful word play and sentence structures. I can't recall the last time I read something that made me simultaneously want to rush through the pages to find out what happens next and also reread each descriptive narrative slowly, devouring every word at the same time. The characters were believable, with depth and moral decorum. The author's impressive knowledge of Alzheimer's medication adds to the legitimacy of the disease, Death Sleep which I found to be a refreshing approach to such a common and stigmatized disease today. This book deserves at least a second read. While I did read it at a brisk pace, this novel is best enjoyed savoring the woven themes of social decency, moral behavior, and existential survival. It would be an injustice to merely categorize this novel as a Walking Dead, Mad Max, wasteland fantasy story. What we have really is a mirror to our own morality as we go along with our characters as they search to find meaning in a chaotic world. What is found at the end of the journey is a satisfying conclusion to a great story.I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Thrilling realistic post apocalyptic novel! By Carleen Markivich This has been one of the best post apocalyptic novels that I have read to date! Everyone loves a good zombie thriller nowadays, but this novel is so much more thrilling! It is more thrilling because it is much more realistic than a zombie apocalypse. Yes, there are no zombies in this book. If you are looking for a zombie novel, this may not be the book for you; however, if you are a fan of the era of the zombies, you may want to give this novel a try. The author is incredibly talented in the way that he writes. The reader is engaged the entire time and you will want to devour this book quickly. It is a page turner and hard to put down. The main idea of this post apocalyptic book is due to the Death Sleep. The way in which the author describes this Death Sleep is miraculous. As a nurse, this is something that I could realistically see and visualize happening. This makes this book all the more thrilling and a page turner for myself. Art is the main character of this novel and he is quite intriguing. He is a neurologist which makes the connection to the Death Sleep all the more enticing to the reader. His adventure through this world after the Death Sleep struck is amazing. There are many answers along the way throughout the novel. This author is very educated in medicine, human anatomy/physiology, and pathophysiology. Do not worry though, as the reader, you do not need to be well versed in these topics. The author explains everything in great detail. I would recommend this book to anyone looking for a good thriller that is more realistic than not. I expect to see more amazing works from this author! I received a free copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

It is the dreamland of most children in Europe and the Americas, and the mysterious home of the mythical Santa Claus, his devoted wife Mrs. Claus, the reindeer, and the many elves who make Christmas toys each year. In many ways, the North Pole is the first geographical location many kids learn, if only because children over the age of three can manage to tell any interested adult that Santa Claus lives there. In reality, of course, the North Pole proved to be as elusive for many brave explorers as jolly old Santa has been for children who wait up at night by the chimney.

The biggest problem, of course, is the North Pole's unforgiving location, far from sunshine or any sort of natural warmth. Another problem, one that would only became obvious in the 20th Century, was that it is located not on any piece of stable land but in the middle of the Arctic Ocean, usually covered by ever shifting ice floes. Finally, without modern technological advances, it was nearly impossible to tell when one has actually reached the planet's northernmost spot.

This has led to more than one argument about who actually made it and who did not; as historian E. Myles Standish put it, "Anyone who is acquainted with the facts and has any amount of logical reasoning can not avoid the conclusion that neither Cook, nor Peary, nor Byrd reached the North Pole; and they all knew it." Those sentiments were echoed by Canadian explorer Richard Weber, who asserted, "We came to the conclusion that Peary never got anywhere near the Pole. On the ice, everything looks the same. I'm afraid we'd have been lost without a global positioning system."

By Don Kidwell Definitely a hard target to hit given it isn't located on any stable piece of land but is constantly covered by ever shifting ice floes. Maybe it's not too surprising then that the effort to reach the North Pole that began in 1827 took at least a century to accomplish and even then Frederick Cook's claim back in 1908 is still "hotly" contested (haha). A very interesting book and I think I will leave it to the readers to discover who was the first team to actually fly over the mark, the next group to actually set foot on the actual point 22 years later, and then read all about the harrowing "Sputnik-style" race to be the first to actually sail beneath the geographic North Pole. One of the better Charles River Editor historical books with pictures that I've come across!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. super By Richard Its a mad world out there. you see madness everywhere you go. Sometimes its very obvious in your face, but sometimes its hidden. and if you look closer, so close that you would hit you nose on the thing you see it in all his glory. The madness of all the people who are seriously trying to bring something good in the world off music. You hear their dreams of being famous through melodies and rhythms that they try to produce. Its a good thing that one blog brings all of this madness to light. In a gentle and kind way Alex Spalding, Kai and the other authors of the website YIKIS points out whats great about these hidden treasures. The style of writing brings a smile to my face. You feel the love for the poor or the less talented, as they are one off there own children. I am still reading this thick book with writing in the wildest fantasies you can Imagen. Something to rough for my taste but I like it anyway. thank you and keep on writing to make the world a less serious and more nicer place.

When the beliefs of your parents are thrust upon you, where exists the line between self-discovery and betrayal? What does it mean to have faith? And is faith ever worth abandoning? In this novella from the author of Brand-Changing Day and Particles, young Kristy Kelly is forced to confront these questions. But like all answers, the ones Kristy finds come with consequences. And while watching the events of Kristy’s life unfold, a young man in her community wonders if asking questions just isn’t worth it after all.
