From the Author Apart from casting a wry glance at the role of patriarchy in a family, Finding Penelope is essentially a love story marking a growth in self-realisation in the protagonist Penelope Eames. It delves into the drugs culture and its associated criminality in Spain (where a lot of Celtic Tiger money wound up laundered), Ireland and the UK. The prompt for the novel was from Cervantes and a motif may be interpreted as a sort of modern day parallel of Don Quixote's attack on the proliferation of romance novels of that time. As seventy per cent of fiction readers are now female, I wanted to understand more of the female mindset. So I picked the brains of women of my acquaintance, including two adult daughters and I researched contemporary women writers and books like Everywoman and I reread with new female (or at least androgynous) eyes, my well-thumbed de Beauvoir, Anna Karenina and Portrait of a Lady. Simultaneously, I was studying the crime culture on the Costa. The result was the character Penelope Eames

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Finding Penelope is a powerful piece of fiction By Andrea Smith I saw of bit of Penelope Eames within myself. She has the self awareness. She understands her motivations and what drives her. James Lawless portrays her a real sensitive woman. I don't think it came across such a story. Like Penelope I had an uncaring father. A father who never showed love but never failed to mention how I was an embarrassment and failure. I have made my closure with this. She manages to keep her wits and leaves Ireland for Spain.She is wiling away her hours writing another romance novel and going to the beach. I tasted the wine, the tapas, soaked up the culture and rooted for her and Ramon. I knew a pinch was coming her way when her brother Dermot shows up. He is addicted to drugs and manages to emotionally blackmail her. The use of cocaine in the story was not sensationalized. I was not offended and the writer handled the subject with flair. I was surprised her friend Gwen indulged. She mentioned an issue about how we do things in adolescence to deal with our insecurities. Once again it struck a chord. If you were wondering if some drama took place, there were carefully placed moments of action. I believe the overall message of the book is finding oneself despite all the demons of the past. She was a force, not overwhelming but you took notice that her thoughts were candid and raw. My perception of it is was that damaged women with daddy issues test limits. The new romance, The person sees you as this magnificent being and because the father did not instill this confidence we recoil. This foreign sentiment may cause some to leash out or attempt to push the man away. I may be delving too deep. Excuse me readers it is my interpreation. Read this story you should. You may discover things about yourself.

Feast or Family: ‘What are the obstacles to happiness?’ By Grady Harp Read a few page of this novel and it becomes quite apparent that the author, James Lawless, an Irish novelist, is moving his mind into the world of what is commonly called ‘chick lit’. This is his fourth novel, originally published in 2012, and the quality is nearly as fine as his original novel PEELING ORANGES, this reader’s introduction to the author’s talent. Lawless was born in the Liberties of Dublin, is an arts graduate of University College Dublin and has an MA in Communications from Dublin City University. Lawless divides his time now between County Kildare and West Cork.’FINDING PENELOPE continues Lawless’ unique perspective in setting a story that reflects the tenor of place - of Spain and Ireland. Very briefly, Penelope Eames, a curvaceous 33-year-old fluff novelist, relocates to Felicidad, Spain, both for solitude to write another book but also to escape the dysfunction of her oppressive father and her drug-addled brother, Dermot, in Dublin. At the playa she meets the hunky Ramón, a young Spanish schoolteacher to whom she is immediately attracted and stirs the longing for the happiness that has eluded her. She receives a disturbing call from Dermot saying he is at the mercy of one Charlie Eliot, a pimp and drug dealer on the Costa. Ramón, whose mother was killed by a drug addict, tells her to have nothing to do with Charlie Eliot. By lroger Having read James Lawless’ first book, Peeling Oranges, and very aware of his fluid writing style, I was excited to pick up this book, Finding Penelope. Again, Lawless continued his poetic narrative and managed to get completely inside the head of his protagonist, novelist Penelope Eames. I always find it so interesting to read novels where the main character is also a writer, as I like to think it gives some insight into the own author’s writing system and process.The novel starts with a series of eclectic characters with unique characteristics that I found so funny and amusing. Penelope is so observant of her surroundings and has such whimsical musings that makes it a pleasure to read. This is a true testament to Lawless’ writing style, as it was so engrossing the minute I started this book.But be warned, Lawless is a wordy writer, so he really gets really descriptive over the scenery and background characters. I love this in an author, as it makes me see the entire picture, almost as if I am watching a movie. However, this type of style isn’t for everyone, so I thought it would be good to point out for those who don’t necessarily like that style.However, even though Lawless is a descriptive writer, the book is far from “fluff.” It is filled with action-packed scenes, romance, drama, witty humor, and a very lovable main character. Because these are all qualities that I find in a good book, it truly deserves the high rating. Another fantastic novel by James Lawless!
