About the Author Jonathan Master is professor of theology and dean of the School of Divinity at Cairn University. He also directs Cairn's Center for University Studies. Master earned his PhD at the University of Aberdeen, where the focus of his work was on the seventeenth-century pastor and theologian Anthony Burgess.

Schnittjer I bought and I read this book cover to cover with much enjoyment, being challenged in several ways, and having many thoughts stirred up. The book is well written, with a clear style, readable and academic. A Question of Consensus provides substantial quotations of the primary sources to help non-specialists track with the discussion. The framing of the book’s central argument is a significant achievement. Moving from Calvin and Beza up to the Westminster Confession, then juxtaposing different tendencies within the “Westminster family” of ministers provides a great vehicle or framework to consider the theological issues associated with the problem of the doctrine of assurance.The book’s focus on useful aspects of the theological issues is of great value. Many authors are not able to pull this off. There are countless well-researched books which never get read all the way through because of excess details. A Question of Consensus demonstrates strong scholarship, yet manages to provide streamlined context to stay focused on the function of the theological issues. The historical value of the book rests in large part on bringing to life several leading personalities of the Westminster tradition both lesser known and well known ministers (Owen, Burgess, and others). This book’s theme reveals that difficulties over the nature of conversion and saving grace were not invented by later revivalist sensations. Master’s argument demonstrates this is a much older problem at the heart of the evangelical Reformed tradition.The most important benefits of A Question of Consensus come from the focus on Burgess’ ordinary means of gaining/sustaining assurance. Burgess’ straightforward approach offers much promise when compared with alternatives, like the celebrated yet complicated views of Owen or Edwards. This book has helped me personally and professionally.
