This book tells the story of one American immigrant family: the Puyau family of New Orleans. Like so many millions of other American families, their ancestors left Europe to find a better life in the United States. The book begins with the arrival of Pierre Puyau at the port of New Orleans in 1854. Before going forward, however, the story goes backward to see how Pierre’s peasant ancestors lived their lives in the tiny village of Labastide in southwest France during the 18th and 19th centuries. Why did Pierre like so many of his time choose to make the dangerous crossing of the Atlantic Ocean to come to America? The book tries to give an answer. Once in New Orleans the story follows Pierre’s life and that of his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren ending with the birth of the author in 1941, the last member of the 4th generation of the family. The Puyaus were ordinary people. None won high political office, led a large corporation or made a major scientific discovery. But they lived the American experience. They felt joy and lived through tragedy in the context of the nation’s history and the history and culture of New Orleans and the Barracks neighborhood (lower 9th Ward) where they resided. Their lives tell us much about the life of America.

Beginning in a small village in southwestern France, the book recounts the story of a young man, Pierre Puyau, as he travels to the United States and then negotiates life as an immigrant in mid-19th century New Orleans. The author Rouyer is meticulous in his research and creates but does not fictionalize the worlds in which Pierre and his family lived. The story also benefits greatly from the fascinating unpublished “memory book” of the author’s aunt Blanche whose thoughts allow the reader to enter the hearts and minds of the Puyau descendants in the early 20th century. Those looking to understand the unique culture and history of one of the nation’s most fascinating cities, New Orleans, can find in this book a ground level perspective seen through the eyes of an extended French immigrant family. Reminiscences from the mid-19th century conjure images made famous in other books such as Streetcar Named Desire, The Moviegoer, and A Confederacy of Dunces. All in all, this is a very good read!
