This volume presents extensive groups of works from nearly all of Cindy Sherman's creative phases. The principle theme in Sherman's oeuvre is the staging of female role models. The American artist relies on stereotypes inscribed on our collective visual memory in a world saturated with media. In this roleplay with costumes, masks and prostheses, during which her own identity almost completely disappears, Sherman (born 1954) walks a fine line between staging and parody in her scrutiny of clichés and fears. The artist became well known for her multipart photo series Untitled Film Stills (1977-80), in which she embodies female characters from fictitious movie scenes from the 1950s. Her artistic principle has essentially not changed much since. In her later series with large-format color photographs, Sherman takes up such themes as fashion photography, fairytale figures, horror scenes and high-society ladies.

Good Introduction to this Remarkable Artist By Amazon Customer This short book can serve as a wonderful non-technical introduction to the work of Cindy Sherman. The book is filled with reproductions of her work from various periods in her stylistic evolution. Wisely, the author does not seek to didactically interpret Sherman's work for the reader-- instead she presents the material while raising a number of issues for the reader to contemplate. For those unfamiliar with Sherman's work, one of the most striking aspects is her use of her own self as model in most of her works (especially those from earlier in her career). Her later works are a little more dangerous-- using dolls and other non-human subjects in often graphically subversive sexual contortions.Cindy Sherman is a true contemporary genius in that her works speak to a very large audience on various levels of meaning. My only reservation about the book is that it seems a little too brief in its discussion of Sherman's biography (although the inclusion of her early work is certainly revealing). One wonders about the "real" Cindy Sherman-- and how she differs from the "Cindy Sherman" that appears in the Untitled Film Stills that solidified her position as a great American artist.

I've read this title, Anyone unfamiliar with the model in question should get this and anyone familiar should read this as it is one of the greatest books on her. The only reason this does not get 5 stars is pieces of it I thought were wordy and a bit belaboring. Overall a great read however.

The Partition of British India and the subsequent creation of two antagonist countries is a phenomenon that we are still trying to comprehend. Millions displaced, thousands slaughtered, families divided and redefined, as home became alien land and the unknown became home. So much has been said about it but there is still no writer, storyteller or poet who has been able to explain the madness of Partition. Using the oral narratives of four generations of people - mainly Pakistanis but also some Indians - Anam Zakaria, a Pakistani researcher, attempts to understand how the perception of Partition and the 'other' has evolved over the years. Common sense dictates that the bitter memories of Partition would now be forgotten and new relationships would have been forged over the years, but that is not always the case. The memories of Partition have been repackaged through state narratives, and attitudes have only hardened over the years. Post-Partition events - wars, religious extremism, terrorism - have left new imprints on 1947. This book documents the journey of Partition itself - after Partition.

I did not know much about the partition and this book taught me both about the history and the significant events before and after as well as introduced me to the most human aspects of the political and geographic divide. The interviews are stunningly pulled together and Zakaria is incredible humble in her story telling. Definitely recommended reading and I look forward to her next book!

Review ...the photomontages do justice to the idea that our past always haunts us, with the best ones reminding the viewer of pentimento ― that wonderful layering that happens when an artist paints over an old canvas with new paint. (Peter Vanderwarker Architects.org, Winter 2015: Well (Volume 18 no. 4))

About the Author T. John Hughes has thirty years experience as a commercial architectural photographer and is a faculty member of the Art Institute of Colorado, in Denver, where he also specialized in photo history. In recent years, he has focused on fine art projects related to architecture; change over time; cinema; and abstraction. One of his best-known endeavors is the "Cityscape" Panorama Project." Begun in 1992 it is an ongoing every-five-year documentation of downtown Denver cityscapes and streetscapes taken from the same vantage points. He continues to teach one course at the University of Colorado Graduate School of Architecture.

Invoking the Shadows: "Apparitions" By Dudley via Northhampton I have always been interested in "then" and "now" photographs of urban areas, particularly of Boston and other Northeastern cities with which I am familiar. However, one must often rely on the text accompanying the photographs to connect the before and after, and even then, that connection is not easily established. This present volume, "Apparitions," is in another league entirely. Not only does it accurately and visually site the buildings and structures that have disappeared onto the present day cityscapes, but the manner in which the black-and-white images of the historic buildings are ghosted onto the full-color photographs from the present seems to me to convey a spiritual or perhaps a mystical dimension. (And the thoughtful comments by photographer Hughes, sometimes humorous, sometimes bittersweet, sometimes troubled and vexed over unthinking development, that accompany each phantom indicate that he may be moved as this reader was.) I recommend this book to anyone interested in classic urban architecture, and how the past has given way to the present.

Excellent monograph on lost architecture that does not simply illustrate decay By Shutterbug I'll admit I have a very biased opinion since I was fortunate enough to teach alongside Mr. Hughes for several years at the Art Institute of Colorado. Having said that, I can say I do genuinely enjoy the book itself. Mr. Hughes manages to strike a balance between the fine art and consumer worlds in this body of work. The conceptual basis of the work, along with Mr. Hughes traditional approach to the photographs themselves (based on his years of experience as an architectural photographer) are wonderfully juxtaposed alongside often tragic, and sometimes humorous, historic stories. The beauty of this book, is that unlike the myriad of artists monographs that explore the decay of once great structures, in this monograph Mr. Hughes celebrates these buildings in their glory days; the tragic parts of these photographs are that the once great structures were most often replaced by parking lots.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Great book! By Stephanie K What a fabulous book. You get to see the "Ghosts"of the buildings of the past over the newer architecture. We are all interested in our past and many cities are included on this journey. Some of the new buildings are for the better and some not so much. There is a short history written about each picture. A perfect book for those interested in architecture and history.

When The Hunted Become The Hunter! © 2014 by Raymond Cook is a 206 page story about people living in and around the small mining town of Marble, Colorado. The town was formed in 1881 and by 1899 the town had grown to over 400 people half of whom worked at The Yule Quarry just outside of town. But with more and more covered wagons of families arriving to stake their claim to 125 acres of land there came risks. Freezing to death in the winter was just one risk they faced. There was also the risk of cholera, smallpox, attacks by scattered bands of Shoshone Indians who hated the white man deeply, murders by horse thieves or cattle rustlers as well as the unstoppable grizzly bear. Wolves howled under the light of the full moon and prowled ranches at night, hoping for a quick meal out of a goat or chicken. But neither put fear in the hearts of a husband or wife more than seeing a cougar track in the dirt near the outhouse. This seven foot long predator was quiet as a mouse and was rarely seen. Come nightfall everyone headed for the outhouse together under the protection of a Winchester rifle in one hand and an oil lamp in the other. As more and more ranchers built their cabins in the middle of cougar country sightings occurred more frequently. As hard as groups of men rode through the mountains and valleys looking for the large cat it was as elusive as a ghost. This book chronicles the life and times of families struggling to survive in the Colorado Territory facing untold dangers. After a cougar hurts its rear hip trying to bring down a deer it finds it can’t hunt prey anymore. It’s only chance to survive now is to hunt men, women and children. Take a trip back in time with me and relive the trials and challenges face early pioneers.

By Samuel mejorado When my family and I lived in butte, Montana in the early 1960's we five children had to walk a mile down a dirt road to meet the school bus at the black top road. I still remember as we watched a pair of young cougars on at least five occasions parallel follow us a good 150 yards away through the woods. All we could do at our age to defend ourselves was to through rocks and sticks if they chose to attack us. I love this book.

Internationally acclaimed designer and illustrator Dan Stiles offers a collection of over 200 concert posters for many of todays leading acts including Arctic Monkeys, Wilco, The XX, Sonic Youth, Girl Talk, Sigur Ros and hundreds more. From Indie Rock to Dance Punk, Americana, Hip-Hop and Garage Rock these lovingly screen printed posters provide a visual narrative of the music that shaped the last decade.     While music, like fashion, recycles itself, poster artwork consistently endears fans. From cheap momentos often ripped down from telephone poles to priceless framed souvenirs accompanied by concert tickets, true music fans can describe posters from their favorite shows. Proving once again that punk is not dead & that video did not kill the radio star, Stiles' posters evoke the thrill of small band discovery for die-hard fans & first-timers. Occasionally it is the artwork we treasure, more than even the band, following the artist's discernment rather than our own ears. How many times have we gone to a show because a friend dragged us? That can easily be said for having been led to a show because of Stiles' seductive posters. Reproduced as a collection for the first time this book is a must have for every music and art fan. With extensive writing in Stiles' own words, a forward by famed rock poster historian Paul Grushkin and an interview conducted by design broadcaster Mark Brickey this book goes beyond the images into the history, philosophy, and techniques used to create award winning posters as well as methods of building success in the ever shifting waters of professional art and design. Finding inspiration, business practices and design development are covered as the process of creating individual posters is broken down step by step. With topics ranging from color theory to building a screen printing studio in Stiles' basement.

Nothing new By Amazon Customer Basically, the information in this book is correct, so I will give 3 stars - but the writing seems to be geared towards 10 year olds. There are no blatant typos or grammar errors, which is always a plus. The photos used as illustration don't look exactly professional - and the title is absolutely misleading. You don't become a pro in one week, not even in one month....especially not with the very basic information in this book. There's nothing here that hasn't been written a 100 times before, and all the information is freely available on-line.Not worth paying for, but as a free download, it might help young kids getting familiar with a dSLR.

By Canada user Amazon_com for me, using Manual mode never made sense until I was directed to the exposure and trying to work around balance there. This book of 10 pages does not mention exposure that I recall. I would suggest that other book with more details be used if you want to shoot photos like a pro. And yes, it takes more than a week. But you could take better pictures in a week if given the correct and complete information.

A Simple Explanation of the Golden Triangle By Daryl Lee Spiewak Written in a conversational style, the author provides a very simple explanation of shutter, aperture, and I SO. This is a starting point. Practice with your own camera and read other books (and your manual) to learn more details.

From a Caribbean island and the pursuit of a legendary boa constrictor, to the Belizean jungle and a fixation on the demise of the Maya civilization, to the Gulf of Honduras and a journey into ancestor worship, these tropical stories blend and explore history, religion, mythology, travel, mystery, illness, the nature of man, the nature of the beast, obsession, and the lure of discovery. In Dog-Head, a rejected man on an island holiday sets out to capture a large snake despite his lack of experience or the fear the legendary reptile inspires in the local people. In Remnants, a young couple on a Central American diving trip encounters a charismatic stranger whose intense obsession with the Maya civilization drives a wedge between them. In Moho Bight, an injured American fisherman in Belize, grappling with a new state of mind, becomes involved with a local woman whose mysterious illness leads him to a remote village and into the tribal rituals of the Garifuna culture. In each of these three fictions, travel and obsession mix into new forms that propel and endanger those susceptible to the lure of the exotic and the unknown, taking the reader with them into uncharted territory.

Dog-Head: Tales from the Neotropics, by Michael Jarvis

Review "Exotic adventures in myth and obsession in: Dog-Head: Tales from theNeotropics" - IndieReader 3/4/16This is an extraordinary collection of three novellas all centered on themesof obsession, myth, and exoticism. They are each mesmerizing, beautifully written, and wholly immersive, presenting the reader with intimate glimpses oflittle-seen worlds.Locations are left relatively vague, as the stories are more often told fromthe point of view of the white outsider; the author is aware of the ways atourist's expectations of savage jungles and down-to-earth natives can colorlived experiences, but his locals are just as aware of this exchange, whichleads to excellent tension. The stories build their worlds slowly and then snapthe reader out of reverie with quick plot changes and dramatic conclusions.IR Verdict: Dog-Head: Talesfrom the Neotropics is a striking and viscerally immersive exploration ofisland culture and white tourism, man's obsession with conquering nature, andthe power of mythology.

About the Author Michael Jarvis was born on an air force base and traveled regularly, living as a child in Guam, Georgia, and England. He graduated from FloridaInternational University with degrees in Fine Arts and English. Since the mid 80s and beginning with the television series Miami Vice, he has been scouting locations for various film projects. He is the author of the novel, Field of Vision, and the collection, Dog-Head: Tales from the Neotropics. His short story, American Kestrel, was published in The Secretof Salt: an Indigenous Journal (Key West, 2008) and will be included in a collection scheduled for release in 2017. He is at work on a novel set in Costa Rica. http://www.michaeljarvis.net

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. I highly recommend it to readers By Amazon Customer Dog Head is a collection of three short stories taking place in the tropics. The book is powerful and compelling, and it talks to our dreams and fears. The stories have some basic elements in common: a young american tourist (different in each story) is influenced by the different environment and nature, and he develops a new wilder streak that makes him follow some inner obsession. The description of the jungle and in general of the environment where the action takes place is very rich and compelling. The characters, mostly described through their actions, feel alive and real. I have been reading this book mostly at night after work, and every day I could not wait to go back to it and to its exotic environment. I highly recommend it to readers.

Wolf Jarvis befuddles us with his brilliant navigation of the tropics and it's extended geography not to mention philosophies of the regions. Readers in our household range from young 20's up to the later 80's. Something for everyone in his work. He is a silent storyteller who's thoughts are only revealed on the page and pages to follow. Having read Field of Vision, we had to embark on this new tale. You won't be disappointed. Open your mind to a visual treat!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A literary gem By Willa Wharton Michael Jarvis' writing is characterized by poetic language and an emotional power that kept me mesmerized from start to finish. The stories are so provocative and disturbing and rich in detail that I felt I was at ground level at all times, right along with the characters. It's not often that a compulsive reader like myself--always hungry for good literary fiction--has the pleasure of discovering such a uniquely gifted writer.

Leopold Classic Library is delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive collection. As part of our on-going commitment to delivering value to the reader, we have also provided you with a link to a website, where you may download a digital version of this work for free. Many of the books in our collection have been out of print for decades, and therefore have not been accessible to the general public. Whilst the books in this collection have not been hand curated, an aim of our publishing program is to facilitate rapid access to this vast reservoir of literature. As a result of this book being first published many decades ago, it may have occasional imperfections. These imperfections may include poor picture quality, blurred or missing text. While some of these imperfections may have appeared in the original work, others may have resulted from the scanning process that has been applied. However, our view is that this is a significant literary work, which deserves to be brought back into print after many decades. While some publishers have applied optical character recognition (OCR), this approach has its own drawbacks, which include formatting errors, misspelt words, or the presence of inappropriate characters. Our philosophy has been guided by a desire to provide the reader with an experience that is as close as possible to ownership of the original work. We hope that you will enjoy this wonderful classic book, and that the occasional imperfection that it might contain will not detract from the experience.

You see them, or a photograph of them, and no matter where you are at that moment, you say: “Missoula.” The big block-letter “M” on Mount Sentinel. The Stoverud’s clock, downtown on Higgins Avenue. The four big metal X’s at Circle Square, a nod of the cap to Missoula’s many eccentricities – and its railroading past. Main Hall and the Missoula County Courthouse and the Florence Building, our built environment. Mounts Sentinel and Jumbo, Lolo Peak, the Clark Fork River – our natural habitat. Missoula’s icons are a rich and fanciful collection that tell the story of our people and their purposes in this relatively remote corner of the planet. They are what make us uniquely, and proudly, “Missoula.” During the summer of 2014, the Missoulian celebrated 100 Missoula icons as part of our coverage of several important junctures in our city and state’s history. 2014 was the 150th anniversary of the designation of Montana Territory by the U.S. Congress. In 2015, Missoula is celebrating its 150th. In this book, we feature Missoula’s 100 icons in words and photographs. Join us for the ride as we celebrate all things Missoula. We begin on the slopes of Mount Sentinel, feet planted on concrete.

Nineteen-year-old Star Collins never intended to return to her hometown, Avenue. That part of her life ended when she was nine years old, and child services took her away from her hoarder mother. Her mother chose her stuff over her daughter. That part of her life was supposed to be in the past. But her mother has just passed away and Star finds herself giving up her summer to quietly clean out her old home. She just wants to sell it and move on with her life. However, things aren't going the way she planned. With her dyed-black hair and tattoos, she's attracting almost as much attention from the small town residents as Ash Winthrope, the guy who was just released from prison. All Ash wants is a chance to start over. He screwed up and he knows it, he's going to have to live with the guilt for the rest of his life. But he's stuck in Avenue until his parole ends, and no one, not even his own parents, wants anything to do with him. Nearly out of money and completely out of options, Ash takes the only job he can, helping Star haul stuff out of her mother's house. Neither of them expects anything to happen between them, or for their lives to change. But sometimes meeting the right person is all it takes.

She grew up in foster care after that. When she is at college, she gets a call that her mother passed away so she has to return to her childhood home to de-hoard it and sell it over summer break.Ash made an awful mistake 5 years ago that had tragic consequences. He spend 5 years in jail paying for what he did and when he is released he learns that people in his small town and even his own family aren't very forgiving. Ash needs a job and Star needs help cleaning out her moms house.I really loved this book. Both Star and Ash were fantastic characters and I loved the chemistry and friendship between them. This was a slow-build romance. There were some really serious parts of this story but there were also some funny moments as well. I like that this was told in dual pov because both Star and Ash were such interesting characters. I really enjoyed this book and can't wait to read more by this author!

I was excited about reading All It Takes because I love a broken character. I enjoy seeing how the author will have them overcome whatever it is that is going on in their life. I like seeing that progression and transformation. That is what I was looking for with this one because really, these characters seemed screwed up. Really screwed up. And they were ... somewhat ...Gosh, I just really don't know where to start ... I have so many things to cover. I'll just start at the beginning of the book and then work through my list from there. Whew. I think that the first thing that really bothered me with this one was how Star and Ash just kept talking about how hot or sexy the other one was. Yeah, this sounds like no biggie, right? I'm all for appreciating someone's appearance. I'm even for saying it repeatedly but this was just completely excessive. It was ALL THE TIME. The "he's so hot" and "she's so hot" shallow nonsense became old very quickly. It made the story seem as shallow as the characters were.Another thing... I cuss. More than any lady should. Hell, more than any person should. This Houston traffic has brought on a potty mouth for me like I never imagined. But Ash's character cussed all the time. ALL THE TIME. It was every other word at times and mostly at times when it was just unnecessary. Do people really talk like this? Of course, I'm sure there are but they sound like idiots. A few well-placed f-bombs are great. It doesn't need to happen this much though. And if I (someone who curses all the damn time) has a problem with it, I know that people who hardly ever cuss are going to have a serious problem with it. Again, it just took away from the story and made it seem shallow. The town that the story takes place in is just ... weird. It's like it takes place in The Twilight Zone or Wayward Pines. It was sooo weird. Yeah, this story is in a small town. Is everyone nosy in a small town? Does everyone know what everyone else is doing in a small town? Sure. But there was this one part that was just weird as s*** and out of left field. It felt like it didn't even belong in the story. I have an advance copy of the novel and that's why I can't say what the scene was ... it may end up getting taken out of the final copy and I really hope that it does because it detracts from the story. All in all, this was an okay book ... the characters didn't seem very authentic and almost confused because their personalities didn't match up with how they were described. I didn't feel one iota of connection to anyone within these pages. It's sad. I can't stand not liking a book and I really, really hate having to say less than flattering things about something that someone has worked so hard on but ... it is what it is.* I received this novel in exchange for an honest review *

She's definitely not your average wishy washy weak female (my hated 3 W's)And Ash, our hero, just got out of prison. Love that this is not your typical safe love story.I love that it's not insta-love. For me, insta-love is soo overdone and not very believable. Here we've got attraction, maybe some lusting going on, but that's it so far.All kinds of feels..And omigod Ash's reaction to Roth! Hysterical! Creeper!Woop woop! The sex is hot hot hot! This book was a solid read for me. The writing was superb, the storyline was great, the characters totally believable and wonderfully flawed. The ending was perfect, no cliffy but does leave us wanting more with a nice window for that more. All in all, 2 thumbs way up for this debut novel.

By Renee My book club, Kismet, read Schemers in January and we were fortunate enough that Victor's schedule allowed him to join our meeting. Before reading Schemers, I didn't realize how much I longed for a GOOD book. As always, Victor did a great job developing the characters and making them so believable. I was a bit disappointed when I finished the book as I wasn't ready for it to end. If you select this book you won't be disappointed.

It captured me from the beginning until the end. Each character was strategically introduced and developed as so I had no problem following their story. I actually pictured faces of people I thought could deliver stellar performances on the big screen as I read the book.SCHEMERS delivered a caliber read in the same likes of The Coldest Winter Ever by Sistah Soulja.

Victor sends you on an emotional rollercoaster that captivates you and leaves one incapable of bookmarking the page for later. Victor is a genius at bringing his characters alive and attaching them to your very soul.
