Review ...the photomontages do justice to the idea that our past always haunts us, with the best ones reminding the viewer of pentimento ― that wonderful layering that happens when an artist paints over an old canvas with new paint. (Peter Vanderwarker Architects.org, Winter 2015: Well (Volume 18 no. 4))

About the Author T. John Hughes has thirty years experience as a commercial architectural photographer and is a faculty member of the Art Institute of Colorado, in Denver, where he also specialized in photo history. In recent years, he has focused on fine art projects related to architecture; change over time; cinema; and abstraction. One of his best-known endeavors is the "Cityscape" Panorama Project." Begun in 1992 it is an ongoing every-five-year documentation of downtown Denver cityscapes and streetscapes taken from the same vantage points. He continues to teach one course at the University of Colorado Graduate School of Architecture.

Invoking the Shadows: "Apparitions" By Dudley via Northhampton I have always been interested in "then" and "now" photographs of urban areas, particularly of Boston and other Northeastern cities with which I am familiar. However, one must often rely on the text accompanying the photographs to connect the before and after, and even then, that connection is not easily established. This present volume, "Apparitions," is in another league entirely. Not only does it accurately and visually site the buildings and structures that have disappeared onto the present day cityscapes, but the manner in which the black-and-white images of the historic buildings are ghosted onto the full-color photographs from the present seems to me to convey a spiritual or perhaps a mystical dimension. (And the thoughtful comments by photographer Hughes, sometimes humorous, sometimes bittersweet, sometimes troubled and vexed over unthinking development, that accompany each phantom indicate that he may be moved as this reader was.) I recommend this book to anyone interested in classic urban architecture, and how the past has given way to the present.

Excellent monograph on lost architecture that does not simply illustrate decay By Shutterbug I'll admit I have a very biased opinion since I was fortunate enough to teach alongside Mr. Hughes for several years at the Art Institute of Colorado. Having said that, I can say I do genuinely enjoy the book itself. Mr. Hughes manages to strike a balance between the fine art and consumer worlds in this body of work. The conceptual basis of the work, along with Mr. Hughes traditional approach to the photographs themselves (based on his years of experience as an architectural photographer) are wonderfully juxtaposed alongside often tragic, and sometimes humorous, historic stories. The beauty of this book, is that unlike the myriad of artists monographs that explore the decay of once great structures, in this monograph Mr. Hughes celebrates these buildings in their glory days; the tragic parts of these photographs are that the once great structures were most often replaced by parking lots.

We are all interested in our past and many cities are included on this journey. Some of the new buildings are for the better and some not so much. There is a short history written about each picture. A perfect book for those interested in architecture and history.
