A stirring last year of childhood endures... Brushed by the tailwind of a passing bicycle, a 44-year old woman drifts into a stream of memories from the tumultuous twelfth year of her life. Eleven-year old Edie, who loves her bike and dreams of flying on the space shuttle, moves to Vermont in 1981. She and her older sister, Jess, her Japanese-American mother and her attentive father settle in a quaint village along the Cold River at Nobody House, a sturdy old farmhouse. As Edie explores her captivating new surroundings, questions swirl about a haunted barn, a girl's shocking, unexplained death from long ago, and a twice stolen gravestone. Edie learns remarkable secrets from her mother's past while grappling with her sister's turmoil and solitary river walks, including a confrontation with a village foe. The Cold River’s allure and danger present Edie with tests of courage and determination. Key events of her life-changing year converge in a disastrous storm and ripple far into Edie’s adult life. This lyrical coming-of-age novel will draw readers to their own recollections of childhood adventure and family bonds, as it reveals the compelling memories and losses that shape one woman's life.

Family secrets and a flowing river bring adolescence to light By Elie Axelroth "And I Became a River" is a story about eleven year old Edie Woodworth, the year her family moves from California to the small Vermont town of Waitstill. Her father, a college professor and her mother, a Japanese-American nurse buy an old abandoned house nicknamed "Nobody House, " purported to be haunted. In the course of Edie's exploration of the town, she comes across a stolen headstone. The girl, Lucy Munson, had mysteriously died at a young age and Edie pursues her curiosity to find out what happened. While Edie makes the transition to her new home with ease, her older sister, Jess becomes moody and distant, bringing to light not only Jess's struggles, but well-kept family secrets. The novel is written as a first-person account in Edie's voice. Initially, I found the narrative slow, but soon Edie's voice took over. The descriptions of Edie coasting on her bicycle, the flow of the river, and a flood of Biblical force, all work together to capture the boundary between childhood and adolescence and Edie's acceptance that life is not always easy or what we expect. Schultz interweaves the parallels of these two stories—the mystery of Lucy Munson's death, the cemetery, a haunted house—with the present-day Woodworth family crisis. Themes of death, transition, reconciliation with the past, and the role of memory in our lives makes this novel sing. "And I Became a River" will appeal to older adolescent and adult readers as well.

A fun and interesting read with great themes and thought provoking twists and turns By jobie brigham I so enjoyed the beautiful lay out and development of this story. "And I Became River " is a fluid and beautifully written coming of age story that interweaves many interesting and complex thoughts and questions regarding life, death, love and the after life. The author did a beautiful job of describing the setting and the scenery. I completely fell in love with so many of the story's references like the town of Waitsill, the covered bridge, the old barn and the cemetery. The plot unfolded in fun and interesting ways. The author was creative and expansive in how he constructed and deconstructed ideas about death, life and the ghosts we wrestle from our pasts and within our own selves. This book triggered my interest to learn more about Manzanar and helped spur on my curiosity and learning in other areas. I highly recommend this book as a fun and interesting read with valuable and interesting themes.

By Ronald C Koeppel My neighbor suggested I read this, the story of an eleven-year-old who moves with her family from California to Vermont, and it's a gem. The "previous" inhabitants of the old farmhouse they move into, a troubled older sister, a broken headstone in the local cemetery, women who fly, a Japanese-American internment camp, diving horses, an Irene-like deluge, and the Windsor-Cornish covered bridge all figure prominently. Reminiscent of Willa Cather, which is a very good thing in MY book. Filled with lots of wisdom, and a very good read for parents as well as young adults with serious questions about this world.
