This book was given to me for an honest review. ***The Good:The character development. Every single one of Mr, Miller's characters are believable as real living, breathing people, and that's hard to do as an author - make them realistic enough so that they aren't two-dimensional, but not overdoing it and making them caricatures. For example, the POV character, Annella (or Ann), can be curious yet cautious, reckless but considerate, but she isn't overtly any of those things. Boys are attracted to her, but they aren't all fawning all over her, and the fact that there is no insta-love gets major bonus points with me.Ghosts, ghosts and more ghosts! The book is categorized as fantasy, but in my opinion it's far more paranormal, so fans of either genre will enjoy it. I love both genres equally! So mix together realistic characters, possessions, and the mysteries surrounding the Archaust and its owner, Vyshe (our antagonist), and you've got a truly haunting but entertaining story.Originality. I can honestly say I've never read a book like this in either the paranormal or the fantasy genres, and that gets points with me, as well!The writing. Mr. Miller's prose flows well and is an easy read. With some fantasy books the author tries to pack in too many descriptions (and hard-to-pronounce names and places) and makes it hard to trudge through. I like just enough to insert me into the story; I don't need to read three paragraphs dedicated to a single landscape. I'd just skim over it anyway.The author 'goes there.' Many times an author doesn't have the gall to kill off a character or have them suffer. Maybe just enough so that the story seems believable. But it takes an author with true grit to really put their characters through hell, and this author does - another reason this is an entertaining book. When you find yourself grimacing, gasping and needing to look away so you can gather yourself before continuing, you know you've found a good read! I will offer a word of caution, though, to those who don't like gore - there are a few scenes with blood and decaying bodies being controlled by the dead.The Bad:There really isn't anything bad to say about this book, other than I wish there would have been a tad bit more romance. But that's really just a personal preference. Maybe there will be more in the next books!The Ugly:Nothing to say in this category!In Short:This paranormal gem is well-written and wildly captivating. I'm eagerly awaiting book two!Favorite Quote:"What's it like?" Ann asked. "Being in the Archaust."He considered the question. "You feel bad emotions, and you go around and around, and nothing ever gets better. But the more you go around, the more you feel pieces of yourself breaking off.""Doesn't sound all that different from my life lately," Ann muttered.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Enjoyable read By Voracious Reader I saw this book recommended on Fire and Ice Book Promos and decided to read with my Kindle Unlimited membership. The thing I really enjoyed about The Vale of Ghosts was the blend of genres. This book is a horror, fantasy, and paranormal book all in one and fans of all three genres will enjoy it. Also, it's not a short book. The plot is fully explored throughout the pages, and the main characters have quite the adventure. I think it's really interesting how the author played out this plot. It's not your typical read.

By Jessica Adkins-Charles First introduced in Last To Know, both Sadie and Ezra have both appeared in the previous two books and now have got their own story to tell.When their best friends, Maddox and Emma, began dating these two were the spare wheels in that relationship. As they spent time with one another, they became close until eventually the two were best friends. When Sadie begins dating Braden and eventually becomes engaged to him, she chooses him over Ezra, only to be left running to Ezra when Braden doesn't turn out to be who she expected him to be.As Sadie moves on from her relationship with Braden, her and Ezra pick up right where they left off and decided to make their friendship a bit more and added the benefits to it. What can go wrong? A lot! And when it all comes to the boiling point, Ezra and Sadie have to decide if their friendship can be salvaged and where they go from here.As with Last To Know and Never Too Late, Micalea Smeltzer crafts a wonderful story of friendship, some angst, and love. What would the Willow Creek relationships be like without a little angst thrown in to the mix? These boys have to work for their girls! I've loved all the Willow Creek boys so far, Ezra included. I really like the relationship between Sadie and Ezra and think Smeltzer best described it with the line "Our relationship was intense, passionate, and full of fun." I love that they can laugh and have fun with one another and it's not all serious, all the time.Maddox and Mathias along with their girls Emma and Remy return for the fun. Maddox still holds a special place in my heart and I love this kid with his diet Pepsi obsession and his love for knitting, Emma, and his pet hedgehog. In the one scene where Hayes is demanding someone go get Maddox his knitting bag to settle him down and then as Maddox started knitting booties, I couldn't help but laugh. I loved the little moments between Mathias and Remy also and how Mathias is such a protective daddy to be. Previously introduced to Hayes, another member of the band, we get a closer look at him in order to prepare for the next book which is his story and includes a character we were just introduced to in In Your Heart - Arden. Arden is a single mom who works for Sadie. It sounds like she has a story just begging to be told. By the way, I loved Hayes' interaction with Arden's daughter Mia.Back to the couple at hand though - Sadie and Ezra had a connection that readers can tell from the start is going to lead to some good times between these two. They have a sweet but passionate relationship and I loved seeing all the fun times between them along with the sweet ones. I especially loved what Ezra does for Sadie towards the end - no spoilers though ;)I truly love this series and cannot wait for the next book. Thankfully it's not too long of a wait. I love the Willow Creek family!

By aj The Willow Creek series has quickly grown to be one of my favorite series and just as I was for the last book, I was super excited for this one to come out, especially because of the little sneak peek in Never Too Late. And thanks to the incredible author behind this book, I was able to receive an ARC and read it early.Sadie and Ezra are an interesting couple to say the least. They are both very different characters unlike Maddox and Emma, who were both cheerful or Mathias and Remy, who were more broken. Ezra was a very enigmatic male lead in the best way possible. Sadie was a little more quirky and complex, but as usually Micalea Smeltzer made it work. Since these two weren't meeting for the first time, it was a little awkward at first because they were already really close and it felt like there was a huge gap that was missing. And because of this, a few times during the book, I didn't really see their connection and attraction. But when I did, the sparks flew out of the page. I don't think a lot of authors could have pulled off putting characters like Sadie and Ezra together, but in this book, it worked.The plot line, like the couple was also interesting. A lot of it was Sadie and Ezra going back and forth about their feelings for each other, which is very understandable and realistic. There were times though it felt a little bit repetitive and that made me slightly skim through the next few pages trying to get to something new. But since this is Micalea Smeltzer we're talking about, she found a way to add something to this book and the next one. And that something was Hayes. Hayes was such a awesome guy in the book and I'm glad that we got to know him a little. The little scenes with him, Arden and Mia were adorable, and it made me so excited for his story."Mathias left just as Hayes returned with the last bag. And by bag I meant cage. Maddox and Emma brought their pet hedgehogs. I wished I was joking,"Now aside from Sadie and Ezra, my favorite thing about this book was the humor. It literally made me laugh out loud and it brightened up my mood. From drunk Sadie to hedgehogs vacationing, I loved it all. Even if I had ended up hating the entire story, I would have given it the stars for the humor.So overall, I didn't enjoy this book as much as the others, but I still did like it and I do recommend reading it. Probably one of my favorite series, and now In Your Heart is my favorite book of the series.It starts off with Sadie catching her fiancé sleeping with another women in their bed two weeks before their wedding. Understandably she gets upset and leaves the cheating bastard. She ends up calling her best friend Ezra the bass player of Willow Creek to come to her rescue. She slowly tries to bring her life back together while also dealing with the inappropriate feelings she has for her best friend. Reading this story makes you wish you had a best friend like Ezra.This story is funny, sexy, memorable, and tugs at your heartstrings. I love that we got to see more of the Willow Creek band members and see where they are now. I can’t wait for the next book and find out more of the Willow Creek boys.

Living only thirty-six years, and plagued by frequent illness, Watteau nonetheless rose from an obscure provincial background to achieve fame in the French capital during the Regency of the duc d'Orléans. Watteau clearly had a genuine love of music. His drawings of those playing and listening offer uncanny portraits of the way it can heighten emotions. Equally, the play of light he orchestrates on fine fabrics, on children’s skin or on various elements of his landscapes, provides a startling anticipation of the Impressionists. He is the inventor of la fête galante, a genre that shows the bourgeoisie at play outdoors. It was an update of the classic format which portrayed mythical beings in pastoral settings. For, rather than selling to royals or aristocrats, Watteau’s art was purchased by rich bankers and tradesmen. His solution was to forge a style they could accept. He replaced traditional nymphs and shepherds with posh Parisians – shown at play not in some mythic Arcardia, but in their own contemporary parks and gardens. He personalized the scenes with figures from two ‘outside’ worlds, those of the theatre and of music. Many of the models for such protagonists were Watteau’s own friends: Parisian actors and musicians he often drew. His drawing ability remains spectacular. But even more startling is his modernity.

My now-deceased mom passed on a tattered edition of this story to me several years ago. One of her fond memories of her grandma was that of her reading J Cole to her and stopping to pause, wipe a tear, and lament, "Poor J. Cole!" Written around the turn of the twentieth century, it is the sad story of a young boy who wants to find work as a servant. Seemingly a dark tale for my mother who said she was 4 or 5 years old at the time, it is a classic of children's literature during that era.

The book aims to provide inspiration that would help a person to succeed in life.Each chapter starts with quotes from various famous people making a point relevant to the topic of the chapter. I really enjoyed the quotes. These quotes are probably the best part of this book.The book does not reveal any big secrets about how to succeed, rather it provides inspiration for being successful. It suggests not to lose your individuality, be able to stand up for your convictions, to find a way to improve on methods people use and finding that something special that is in demand will propel you to making a fortune.Some of the language in the book is rather sexist, for example here is a paragraph from "Seize Your Opportunity":"Of thousands of young women trying to get a living at typewriting, many are so ignorant, so deficient in the common rudiments even, that they spell badly, use bad grammar, and know scarcely anything of punctuation. In fact, they murder the English language. They can copy, "parrot like," and that is about all."When you read old books you notice how the society changed. One day shooting Breathless on the Champs-Élysées, so many onlookers gathered that Cauchetier couldn’t get close. He asked Belmondo and Seberg to come for a quick walk down a quieter stretch of the avenue away from the crowds, getting his famous shot of them ambling along chatting. “You can see the happiness in it,” he says. The same was true of his classic picture of Seberg kissing Belmondo on the cheek. “That day, to avoid the crowds, Godard shot from up high on the fifth-floor of a building. You could just make out this minuscule couple parting with a chaste kiss in front of a newspaper stand. SUPERB PHOTOGRAPHY OF THE FRENCH NEW WAVE ERA By Anthony McGill A stunning collection of the sublime black and white photography of Raymond Cauchetier taken during the French New Wave of cinema.Beautifully presented on high quality paper with photos faultlessly reproduced in mainly full-page shots, this collection at last fully credits one of the most significant photo journalists of the time.Cauchetier was the set photographer on 23 New Wave films from 1956-1968 working with the key figures of cinema. His classic work in this book are dominated by three of the most famous French films of the period. There is extensive coverage of Jean-Luc Godard's "A Bout de Souffle" ("Breathless") with the immortal shots of one of the most iconic duos in film history: Jean-Paul Belmondo and Jean Seberg. (To me, these photos of Belmondo, Seberg and the Paris streets are alone worth the price of the book!). Also given lavish coverage are two Francois Truffaut gems: "Jules et Jim" and "Baiser Voles" ("Stolen Kisses") with an awesome collection of photos depicting Truffaut at work with stars Jeanne Moreau, Oskar Werner, Henri Serre and Jean-Pierre Leaud. About the Author After devoting thirty years to surgery, all of them at universities, I needed a rest and a change. Practicing medicine was gratifying, but it deprived me of life experiences outside hospitals and clinics and operating rooms. Write, my children said, because you’re a great story maker-upper. So I made up stories and published them. The first six were medical fiction, in the thriller or mystery or suspense genre with emphasis on surgeons whose characters are shaped by their profession.The next two, which are yet to be published, are of the literary fiction genre, stories in which I drew on my experiences as not only a surgeon, but as a person from Iran who lived away from home most of his life and who as a youngster suffered the barbs of prejudice.

By Richard Sutton Author Sarfeh has turned his formidable storytelling skills and many of his own experiences loose upon a riveting story of change, adaptation and eventual redemption. I will always find a special, enduring place in my memory for many of the memorable scenes in this novel. A young Iranian boy is torn from the secure home he knows into America, a place "Where everyone isn't angry all the time." His fight to adapt and thrive in a society he often finds hard to understand, is touching and educational, too. Often at odds with his father's military career mindset, the young man struggles to find his own way in a new world that will allow him to strive but also allow him to fail. The novel also explores the personal side of how the revolution in Iran dealt a heavy, cruel hand to an ancient, hospitable culture -- a culture that survives despite impossible conditions. Persian roots run very deep and very strong.Sohrab is the ultimate outsider: turned away from his homeland, alienated from his own family, and not always at home in his new life. The author's use of shifting character points of view in alternating chapters, between the young man and from an observer following Sohrab's father's own turmoil and hidden demons, made it easy to absorb the feelings and motivations of both characters. The two are paired with ancient Persian stories of their namesakes. As the young man grows to adulthood and finds his calling, so does the battle-hardened soldier, in a uniquely Sarfeh-styled twist. In some ways, the characters in this book are tossed, incompletely prepared, into a maelstrom of conflicts that they all manage to muddle through. Fate is either kind, or it has a sense of humor. I found a close, personal connection with a young man, determined to prove nothing to no one, who finds that the pathway of mediocrity is not suitable for him. Just like his father always said. Loyalty can take many forms. Read this engaging story yourself and see if you don't end up cheering for everyone.

It is a story of a young boy's journey to manhood, and his triumph over the enormous duplicities of living in America with his Iranian heritage. It is the fascinating story of the boy's father, a powerful general, who was forced to flee Iran during the revolution, but who returns to confront his past. Set within the political reality of modern Iranian history, Sarfeh's novel transcends the bitterness of that history by telling of people who are principled and brave. It is a wonderful story and a compelling read. I was fascinated by the exotics settings, by the intricate plot, by the unfolding mysteries, and by the compelling characters. A truly great read!

Captivating By william a scovill The author writes with enormous insight about the culture and value systems of the Iranian people before and after the fall of the Shah. He tells a compelling story of a prominent Iranian family that migrated to the US at the time of the revolution and how their interrelationships evolved. A very captivating book that will bring the reader to search for more books by this inspiring author.

About the Author Stephen Petrus is an Andrew W. Mellon Research Fellow at the New-York Historical Society, where he is working on his second book, a political and cultural history of Greenwich Village in the 1950s and 60s. At the Museum of the City of New York, he curated the exhibition Folk City, on view until January 10th, 2016, and was co-author of the show's accompanying book, with historian Ronald D. Cohen. Petrus has published essays on twentieth-century U.S. urban and cultural history. He received his Ph.D. in history from the City University Graduate Center and taught at Lehman College in the Bronx. He currently lives in Brooklyn.Ronald D. Cohen is Emeritus Professor of History at Indiana University Northwest in Gary, Indiana. He is the author of numerous books on the history of folk music including The Pete Seeger Reader (OUP, 2014) and was the co-producer/writer of the 10-CD boxed set Songs for Political Action: Folk Music, Topical Songs and the American Left, 1926-1954 (1996).

By Catherine McCabe I was attending Barnard College in NYC from 1960 to 1965 and so lived the times the book describes. In fact I was sitting in Gerde's Folk City with the music critic from the NY Times when Bob Dylan sang. I explained to him why Dylan was so exceptional, he wrote a review and Dylan was signed to a record contract. We hung out at the Bitter End too while attending the private parties the various performers would give. The Clancy Brothers always gave the best ones! What a time it was to be alive and living in New York and thank heavens "Folk City" has captured it all so well.

I plan on going to The Museum of the City of NY to see the exhibit first hand before it closes in late November. You ever read a book so fast because you couldn't wait to see what happened next.... but never wanted it to end? That's this book! Warren I feel like Lukens started with a very interesting premise and plot, but that ultimately the lack of description and character development left the whole book feeling incomplete or rushed. There were some missed opportunities in these areas which, if taken, could have made this a stellar read. If you are looking for an interesting, quick read, I recommend this novel. But, if you are looking for something with more depth, atmosphere, and development, you may end up feeling underwhelmed.

The story line was captivating and kept me fascinated throughout. I highly recommend this author to anyone with an interest in the horror occult or demonology.

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. "Orcas live a dream of man" - Beautiful, readable account of Killer Whales By Joshua N. Wiley Of Orcas and Men is a beautiful, very readable account of the Killer Whale, Orcinus orca, its natural history and ecology, and its human history and interaction.Neiwert is a journalist and writes this full book as a labor of love. He is an amateur, in the best sense, not a professional scientist. He tends to quote the key researchers at length from personal interviews after summarizing their work. There are no close references, although there are some notes. (My biggest lead is to read Lori Marino's papers.) Some reviewers have noted that the book is somewhat repetitive, which is true. Some of the factual underpinnings of the account are scattered and hard to find for reference. Chapter subheadings would have been helpful, IMHO, although they would break up the flow a little.What I probably learned most from Neiwert's book is that Killer Whales limit the range of their abilities and instinctive responses by social intelligence and "ethnic" culture. The males don't fight--at least not to the degree seen in other dolphins (or Sperm Whales). Everyone shares food. Everyone eats a particular kind of food, according to the specialization of the ecotype. Orcas don't eat human beings, at all--although they certainly could. (Bears, sharks, and crocs all do. Lions do.)Neiwert is clearly on the path to show that Orcas are exceptional vis-a-vis other dolphins and all whales. This contrasts with the account given in the more scientific but nonetheless complementary text of the past year, _The Cultural Lives of Whales and Dolphins_ (Whitehead and Rendell, 2014). Whitehead and Rendell focussed on some smaller dolphins as especially matrilineal odontocetes—Orcas, Sperm Whales, and Pilot Whales—as possessing culture and being dependent on culture. They started getting their ideas about whale culture from their Sperm Whale research, although they seem to recognize that Killer Whales possess the most clear-cut, developed, and distinctive cultures of all whales. In that sense, they align with Neiwert in his passionate case for "Orca exceptionalism." Orcas are superlative of other dolphins in the roughly the same way as humans are superlative of other primates, both in terms of their physical biology and in terms of their social culture. Killer Whales have the second-biggest brain on the planet, and the most folded, intricately branched brain structure of any being we know.

What grabbed when reading a review of Oracas and Men, was the author's argument for empathy being an "evolutionary advantage" for orcas, "perhaps making them more than human." WOW. You will not be disappointed.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. This is an informative, passionately written account of orcas in the Pacific Northwest and BC. Sadly, development may doom them. By lyndonbrecht This is a compelling book, written with passion and understanding. It is partly written in first-person, as Neiwert is a kind of participant observer, living in the same area where the orca pods he describes live. This is primarily about several groups of orcas in the Puget Sound up through British Columbia coastal and island waters. These orcas bore the brunt of a decade or so of capture of orcas for aquariums such as Sea World--they suffered a sizable chunk of their populations lost to these captures, and have not yet recovered. Part of the point to the book is an exploration of whether and how these animals can live in such close proximity to several million people.One thing for readers to note is the small populations, something like 300 orcas in this sizable area. Also important to note is that the population is comprised of "residents" who eat salmon and other groups that travel widely, and eat sea mammals; these are essentially subspecies that do not interbreed. The latest studies indicate that there are perhaps ten subspecies in the killer whale complex, with different prey, that do not interbreed and socialize with their own kind. This book focuses mostly on the resident population, which has been closely studied for several decades now; interviews with the people who do the studies is an important part of the book, studies of behaviors, diet, vocalizations. The book does have a short section detailing the differing orca subpopulations.Niewert's book combines natural history, biology and most particularly, relationships with humans, which range from a New Age sensibility through hard science, politics and environmentalism, environmental ethics and a growingly popular whale watching industry that clogs the seaways. His point of view is very strongly environmentalist influenced by solid science (which includes assumptions of evolutionary process and global warming). He discusses SeaWorld and other such businesses, and is uniformly harsh about them, accusing at least one of outright lies to the public (Orcas, with one rare exception, live much shorter lives in aquariums than in the wild). One fascinating chapter is titled "Free Willies," discussing that particular whale as well as several others, concluding that release of whales born in captivity is probably not good, but the wild-caught ones probably should be released). The intricate politics of the whale "rescued" is bizarre, and SeaWorld comes out as the baddie.Near then end an environmental issue intrudes. The huge deposits of energy in Canada's tar sands represent a huge opportunity for exports, and the industry wants to set up a huge terminal near Port Vancouver to export the oil, which would bring large numbers of large tankers through the areas inhabited by the resident whales. Aside from the quite dangerous nature of the oil in the event of a spill, ships make a lot of noise that can interfere with Orca communications and their hunting. The issue has not been resolved yet, but given the very, very large sums of money that would be earned, it looks like tar sands oil 1, Orcas 0. The very strong environmentalist movement in BC may yet stop it.

A revolution is an insurrection, an act of violence by which one class overthrows another.” – Mao Zedong It’s a sure sign of fame when a man is known simply by his first name, and Mao Zedong, often referred to simply as Mao or Chairman Mao, was one of the most influential men of the 20th century. He was also arguably the most controversial; as the founder of the People’s Republic of China, Mao rose from being a communist revolutionary to successfully overthrowing a regime and transforming China into a communist powerhouse in Asia. The ramifications of Mao’s life and legacy are still very much felt today, as China continues to transition into a superpower that may soon lay claim to the world’s largest economy. Mao’s communist revolution is still controversial, but it was his reign over China that has made him notorious, and in the West he is often considered one of history’s biggest tyrants. Mao’s revolution and his subsequent policies have been accused of causing millions of deaths, possibly more than the likes of Hitler and Stalin. It has been roughly estimated that Mao was responsible for the deaths of anywhere from 40-70 million, but he has plenty of defenders as well, who cite Mao’s military and political leadership for inspiring similar revolutions across the world.

Minnick I read this in high school in the late 1980s and asked myself, "Why wasn't this mandatory reading at West Point in the late 1950s and 1960s?"This book, in conjunction with Ho Chi Min's writings on the use of guerrilla warfare, is the absolute basic understanding of the Viet Nam War from back BEFORE the French Foreign Legion were fighting for their colony. EVERYTHING, and I do mean EVERYTHING, in this book is used in the fight against the French right up to Dien Bien Phue, and continued up until the fall of Saigon in 1975. EVERYTHING. Why did America lose the Viet Nam War? Read this. How could America have been so wrong to back Ho Chi Min, Chaing Chi Chek, and Kim Il Song, in the Second World War? Read this.You will say, "Wow" many times throughout the book, and in the end you will ask, "When was this first printed? How the bleep could we have been so wrong?"

Learn from the master By Bibliophile I think Mao intended this essay to be another one of his theoretical Marxist works (Mao thought of himself as a first-class Marxist theoretician). But without question it also served as an instruction manual for his ragtag Red Army while fighting among the tortuous terrain in northwestern China, in part against Japan, in part against Chiang. Considering his success as a practitioner of guerrilla warfare, one would have to be insane to ignore this work.I'm struck how short that chapter is on guerrilla wars in history. Mao was widely read in Chinese and world history and it would have been his style to display this knowledge in a work like this had he chosen to do so.Perhaps Americans should not think of themselves as only at the receiving end of guerrillas. Washington learned this kind of fighting during the French and Indian Wars, and he put some of this experience to good use against a British army better armed, better trained, and greater in numbers than the Continentals. He exploited geography, made surprise raids, used mobility and patience to wear out the red coats - all hallmarks of guerrillas. The all-important Battle of Trenton was such kind of unconventional warfare: an Indian raid, essentially. But it sure got results. Regular or conventional battles like Yorktown only came later, when British impatience was at the breaking point. As Franklin had predicted, the British could and did occupy all the towns - including Philadelphia, New York, and Charleston - up and down the eastern coast but they could not hold onto them. (The comparison with Iraq is irresistible. The redcoats never numbered more than 30,000 or so men, fighting among 2.5 million American civilians. Now America has 5 times as many troops in Iraq (about 150,000) as there were redcoats in the 13 colonies. But Iraq's population is 25 million! And that's not counting foreign fighters from Iraq's neighbors. American guerrillas probably had better geography than Iraqi insurgents but the Iraqis seem more eager to commit suicide missions.)Mao really could have done better than just cite Russian resistance to Napoleon as an example. (Never mind his other Chinese examples. for the moment.) Apart from Washington, the Spaniards also tore the Grand Armee to pieces with guerrillas - in fact, Spain's where the word came from. Lawrence of Arabia sabotaged Turkish railways in northwestern Arabia (rather like insurgents blowing up Iraq's pipelines) - to great effect. Of course, another great example of guerrilla warfare was the block-by-block, street-to-street fighting at Stalingrad. But always, to my mind, the Teutoberg forest was where guerrillas first made their greatest name in Western history. (I know little Greek history to comment further.) Octavian lost three Roman legions thanks to the German barbarians, and Rome hadn't suffered a panic quite like this since Spartacus.Believe it or not, Mao got his inspiration not from Lenin (though he paid much lip service to him), not even from Sun Tsu (whom he read only when his military career was over), but from the classic historical novels of ancient China, especially The Water Margins and Three Kingdoms. That he didn't cite these is understandable enough: he always insisted on learning truths from facts, and novels don't provide facts though they do generate interest in the motivated reader. And Mao was nothing if not motivated.Griffith's extraordinary credentials are not worth repeating here. His intro is excellent. He is dead right that guerrillas thrive anywhere: from the dense jungle of Vietnam to the flat deserts of Iraq. Where there are clear political objectives (knowing the difference between long- and short-term goals), men willing to fight (and die), a will to win, and lots of patience, all it takes is a little hard thinking to make the worst-equipped great guerrilla warriors. Let us learn from the master, not by regurgitating his rules, which he would never have done himself, but by thinking critically and philosophically through his logic.

44 of 50 people found the following review helpful. On the many facets of guerrilla activity By Michael J. Mazza "On Guerrilla Warfare," by Mao Tse-Tung, has been translated into English by Samuel B. Griffith II. Griffith also provides a substantial introduction to the text. The book is written in the context of China's guerrilla war against Japanese occupiers; this conflict is mentioned often by Mao. In this book Mao discusses the differences between guerrilla and "orthodox" military forces, as well as how such forces can work together for a common goal. Other topics covered include propaganda and political concerns, the formation of guerrilla units, the qualities of a good guerrilla officer, discipline in a guerrilla army, and guerrilla bases.Mao stresses the importance of speed, surprise, and initiative in guerrilla war. Among the most interesting sections of the book is a code of conduct for guerrilla fighters. Most of the book is fairly dry and matter-of-fact, but there are welcome flashes of passion, poetic imagery, and global vision that make this more than just a textbook. Translator Griffith notes that Mao's text was first published in 1937. Despite the passage of time, I believe that this is still a relevant text, and I recommend it in particular to all professional military personnel.
