He is the author of numerous books on the history of folk music including The Pete Seeger Reader (OUP, 2014) and was the co-producer/writer of the 10-CD boxed set Songs for Political Action: Folk Music, Topical Songs and the American Left, 1926-1954 (1996).

By Catherine McCabe I was attending Barnard College in NYC from 1960 to 1965 and so lived the times the book describes. In fact I was sitting in Gerde's Folk City with the music critic from the NY Times when Bob Dylan sang. I explained to him why Dylan was so exceptional, he wrote a review and Dylan was signed to a record contract. We hung out at the Bitter End too while attending the private parties the various performers would give. The Clancy Brothers always gave the best ones! What a time it was to be alive and living in New York and thank heavens "Folk City" has captured it all so well.

Hess As an old fart who lived thru the folk revolution i appreciated the fine research that produced this volume.It tied together much of the "times they are changing" history that will never again be seen. As an Appalachianmusic buff this book has helped me better understand the times and people who made our folk music.

I plan on going to The Museum of the City of NY to see the exhibit first hand before it closes in late November. Highly recommended if you were swept away as I was by the folk music revival of the 1960s.
