An insatiable need burns inside him that can only be quenched by one thing... her. Augustus' people had spent years in talks with the humans, moving toward the day when the Seven, the preternatural races of beings on earth could "come of the darkness" and integrate with society. He had pulled himself away from the peace he'd found on Santuary, his ranch in Texas, to lend his efforts toward the goal. And despite his misgivings, they were mere weeks away from signing an agreement. Then he saw her. He had to have her, no matter the risk, no matter the cost. Nothing would stop him. Not even her. Layla felt like she was living a dream. Her paranormal romance about a woman being abducted by a Vampire and the love that developed between them had become a hit. She was being sought after by publishers, film producers and even interviewed on one of the biggest morning news shows in the country. Life is good. Well, until she passes out in the back seat of a limo after a book signing, and wakes up tied to a bed. Then things aren't so swell. Turns out life can mirror fiction. Just like the heroine in her book, she's been abducted. By a Vampire. And to make matters worse, he's pure sex in jeans. And he doesn't intend to let her go. He might not intend on her leaving, but she's dead set on it. It's a battle of wits and wants as passions flare. A contest to see who will emerge the victor and who will end up on their knees.

Review Elizabeth for Candid Book ReviewsThis is the second book in The Seven series and it was incredible. The story was jam packed with action, passion and enough twists and turns to keep you on the edge of your seat. I read the first of the series and was excited to see where this series would go. I was not disappointed. The characters are interesting and hold enough depth and fascination that you can't help but want to know more.Since I received this copy for an honest review I will admit there was a tiny blip that threw me for a moment. At the beginning of this story there is so much information and so many specifics about some characters and their relationship to others that I felt a little bogged down for several pages. BUT......but.....but......but..... I have to say that so that if you find yourself bogged down for a few minutes at the very beginning......hang on, because the book is absolutely worth the read. I thoroughly enjoyed it. I am still amazed at the author's talent to combine so my different factions of paranormal into her stories and make it so the reader can not put it down! Again I find my self tapping my foot in anticipation for more of this amazing world. So if you're in the market for a fantastic paranormal read then you're in the right place!

WHO skips sex scenes!!!? Like girl, not a hint, not a taste, not even a swear word? SAY WHAT????I'm left to believe in their love based on what? If you don't show it to me, how am I supposed to stay engaged? Sigh. Fail.

The ideal is a good one and could have been a total 10 for me but a lot of the story felt a little to rushed. I like to read about my couples love life and the sex scenes were skipped with no details or anything. I liked the romance between Layla and Augustus but felt like the story line needed to be built a little more than it was in the beginning. I do recommend that the author continue with the other characters in the book and hopefully will come out with a book for each of the 7 paranormal leaders.

Incredible View of the Paranormal By I Love To Read Let me start by saying this is the first book by this author that I've read.I love her view of the paranormal. It's always refreshing to read a differentinterpretation of the subject. This is a great, unconventional love story between a Vampire and a romance writer!Layla Storm has FINALLY gotten her book published and it's an overnight success. What was the book about? A human and vampire falling in love! Go figure. AugustusThurinus knew he had to have Layla the first time he met her. Due to politics in playacross the globe, he couldn't approach her in the conventional way, so he kidnapsher. This is where the story really took off. Full of action, suspense, and an awesomelove story, I was riveted to my seat and read the book cover to cover in a day. Inthe book Ms. Stone introduces six other paranormal beings, and I can't wait for thenext story in the series to be released!I was gifted a copy of this book for an honest review.

In his new book The Strange Case of the Rickety Cossack, human paleoanthropologist Ian Tattersall argues that a long tradition of "human exceptionalism" in paleoanthropology has distorted the picture of human evolution. Drawing partly on his own career―from young scientist in awe of his elders to crotchety elder statesman―Tattersall offers an idiosyncratic look at the competitive world of paleoanthropology, beginning with Charles Darwin 150 years ago, and continuing through the Leakey dynasty in Africa, and concluding with the latest astonishing findings in the Caucasus.

The book's title refers to the 1856 discovery of a clearly very old skull cap in Germany's Neander Valley. The possessor had a brain as large as a modern human, but a heavy low braincase with a prominent brow ridge. Scientists tried hard to explain away the inconvenient possibility that this was not actually our direct relative. One extreme interpretation suggested that the preserved leg bones were curved by both rickets, and by a life on horseback. The pain of the unfortunate individual's affliction had caused him to chronically furrow his brow in agony, leading to the excessive development of bone above the eye sockets.

The subsequent history of human evolutionary studies is full of similarly fanciful interpretations. With tact and humor, Tattersall concludes that we are not the perfected products of natural processes, but instead the result of substantial doses of random happenstance.

A survey with an agenda and a Good Read for paleoanthropology buffs By j a haverstick I’ve always had an interest in paleoanthropology and am old enough to have seen many of the breakthroughs of the last century and this. There are a finite number of books I’ll be reading before I go to sleep for good and so I try not to waste my time with the genre of science/biographies. But I heard Tattersall interviewed last Friday on the PBS program Science Friday and was interested enough to order this book, especially as he advertised himself as a bit of a rebel and was plugging the idea of Homo as a varied genus, sadly now represented by only one species, and not a natural progression to modern wo/man. It’s amazing how much of that medieval teleology still exists, maybe not in academic papers but in the general discourse, including that of science practitioners.Well, this is sure a book loaded with personal recollections and private thoughts and details, but it wasn’t two pages in that I was hooked. Tattersall has a great style and a sharp and laconic wit. We meet guntoting teeniebop revolutionaries, claptrap airplanes and running out of beer in a hot climate before we’re on page five! Continuing in that vein would have made a great book. But although this is a first person account of pale anthropology of the last 60 or so years, it doers not rely only on colorful episodes. Tattersall has been at the heart of this discipline and his account is an account of how personalities and default assumptions have colored the field. If you’re going to read this, you need a basic acquaintance with the recent (ca. 50 yrs.) players. I have that, but I was still hard put to put it all together into a coherent narrative: who said what in !972 and what another riposte was in 1999, etc. etc.Let’s cut to th4 chase. Tattersall is very interested in the internecine wars about whether Homo is a large category or whether there are many species denied by the Unifiers. He thinks paleontologists are naïve in the systematic of cladistics in general. If you don’t get what I’m saying, better think about buying this book twice. He works this book around this theme. It is only 200 pages long and I read in two days and so can you if you are interested in the subject. There is a positive side to taking a huge mass of data and reducing it to “this or that’, and I very much appreciated Tattersall’s reduction. It made a lot of sense of what to me was perhaps unsorted information from many sources in the last half century. On the negative side, though, there was so much history presented in a pretty scanty way that it often seemed like reading a list. That’s why I’m taking a star off the review. I think that perhaps Tattersall could have presented his belief that not making hard and serious differentiations among the species of Homo and other hominids leads to Exceptionalist think ing about human beings could have been more sharply presented. Why exceptionalist thinking? Because looking at evolution working on just Homo in general suggests that this outcome (us) was a refinement rather than one outcome among many other possibilities.I’m pretty much on the author’s side when it comes to the hard reality of species (in this context, anyhow). But even he admits at the end that species are “leaky”. When I was a boy I read that Plato thought that for every noun (Horse, Table, Neanderthal) there was an object. His friend Aristotle brought this down to earth opining that the world is arranged into Natural Kinds (horses, tables, Neanderthals) Couple of millenia later, William James suggested that our categories are something WE bring to our world to suit our purposes. I’m kind of with James here…if I had to choose. About Tattersall’s thinking that blurring the lines leads to exceptionalist, teleological mindset, I’d have to remark that this book is larded with references to the special and amazing character of human beings. Really? If ants could talk, they’d no doubt be talking about their own special and amazing qualities. But ants can’t talk , you say. No but humans can’t carry a hundred times their own weight and forming living bridges over rivers with their own bodies. Q.E.D.

A MUST READ for those interested in human evolution By Nathan H Lents I had the pleasure of reviewing this book for the Human Evolution Blog and interviewing the author:http://thehumanevolutionblog.com/2015/06/23/a-conversation-with-ian-tattersall-about-his-new-book-the-strange-case-of-the-rickety-cossack-and-other-cautionary-tales-from-human-evolution/This book is a history of the discipline of paleoanthropology, a close-up look at how the scientists approached the difficult task of making sense of the human fossil record that emerged painfully slow from the earth. While that may sound dry, the book is actually filled with drama! There are enormous egos, bitter disputes, grand but baseless claims, and even a shouting match on live television. It's not always an easy read, but well worth the effort. This should be required reading of anthropology and paleontology students because of how it important it is to understand that roots and history of one's discipline, a point that Tattersall makes throughout the book. The take-home lesson for this for young scientists is, "Question everything," advice we could all do well to heed. Tattersall expressly rejects the tendency among scientists to exert authority in the face of dogmatic challenges and hide or minimize our own mistakes. Instead, the evidence should be carefully studied, cautiously interpreted, and, in the end, be allowed to speak for itself. There is also a strong call to remember that the evolutionary history of humans followed the same meandering path that other species have taken. Our history was not a steady march toward perfection and "we are the pinnacles of nothing," as he states in the final paragraph.

It was nice to get an updated version of what some paleoanthropologists agree on currently. Like the Brothers Karamazov this book started out a little slow. However unlike the Brothers K. it got better. I was interested to learn that when Potassium Argon dating was first used in 1950 the age of hominids went from an estimate of 600,000 years to 1.75 million years. Other interesting facts included that fire domestication was estimated at 1 million years ago and 2.5 million years ago stone tools marked a significant cognitive leap. Also around 1.8 million years ago the modern body form appeared and brain size began its remarkable increase. And the current form of homo sapiens appears to be about 190,000 years old. I was reminded of Roger Water's concept album where the aliens come to earth and piece together what happened to us, "We watched the tragedy unfold. We did as we were told we bought and sold. It was the greatest show on earth. But then it was over. We oohed and aahed We drove our racing cars. We ate our last few jars of caviar. And somewhere out there in the stars A keen-eyed look-out Spied a flickering light Our last hurrah And when they found our shadows Grouped 'round the TV sets They ran down every lead They repeated every test They checked out all the data in their lists And then the alien anthropologists Admitted they were still perplexed But on eliminating every other reason For our sad demise They logged the only explanation left This species has amused itself to death."

FINDING A TRUE HOME By Laurel-Rain Snow Jane March designs greeting cards for Cobblestone Cards, but when she is laid up with a broken arm, she returns home to Addison. Staying with her mom, Lillian, and trying to find her “jingle” again, she discovers unexpected friends and the possibility of romance.Snow Deer and Cocoa Cheer, like all books by this author, brings the reader right into the homey world of the characters. We are revisited by characters and places from other books, when we shop at Whole Latte Life and Snowflakes & Coffee Cakes. As Jane discovers a new plan for her next series of cards, with the help of a list her mother has offered, we are soon immersed in the New England Village settings she creates. I loved the covered bridge, the snow settling on the Victorian houses, and I especially fell in love with the carriage house next door to Jane’s mother’s farmhouse, with its loft that has views of the countryside. I know I wouldn’t be able to move away from that space. The village is a place I would love to spend Christmas.Wes Davis is an interesting character. Jilted by his almost-bride, he is struggling. He had given up his apartment and now lives with his father, Pete, in Addison. Wes is a mailman, like his father and grandfather before him. Meanwhile, in his spare time, Pete whittles creations that become the centerpiece for his new website, and Jane assists with the marketing. And when Wes and Jane want to communicate with each other, they leave up the red flag on her mailbox. Can love be on the horizon? Is it too soon for Wes to begin again? And what will happen next for Jane after her arm heals?A delightful read that makes this reader want to visit this New England village, eat comfort foods, and buy greeting cards from the series Jane creates. This book definitely earned five stars from me.

A long time ago, religion hijacked God. It is a great shame. It was not without some value. Religion did and still does to a degree provide an ethical framework for society, whichever religion you adhere to. Unfortunately, like training wheels on a bike, there comes a time to go beyond the limitations of the religious God, to go beyond the nihilism of the atheist God, and appreciate both the irrelevance and wonder of a very different God, an inner divinity that has no need for worship, no need for anything, but merely enjoys the ride and the creative endeavour that you as a human get to observe, and which you call your life. It may seem strange to think of God as irrelevant, but that is the gift given to humans, to enjoy their lives in utter oblivion. No agenda, no must be, must do, must anything. It is called free will. Forget karma, forget destiny, forget sin, these are all attempts to either explain or control. The true divinity has no interest in such minor and irrelevant issues, and that is the gift of being human, to explore without constraint, without limit, or more accurately, to observe without constraint, without limit, the wonder of what your life could be, may be, already is. The atheist-religion debate is a nonsense, a distraction, with neither side owning reality, even though both lay claim to it. It is tempting to call it science vs religion, but that is lazy thinking. A true scientist is open minded and explores what is. Someone claiming to be a scientist and denying the awareness that is intrinsic to everything is not in fact a scientist beyond a profession, but becomes an atheist, and that is a very different creature. An open minded scientist has no problem with either the extraordinary accomplisments of science or the extraordinary nature of what is beyond science. I am a mathematician. Just a little one, a maths graduate from a long time ago, but I still cherish the distinction that a mind inclined towards pure maths offers as a mindset. It is an illusion that maths is about numbers. Maths is thought, in some ways the purest thought, the clearest and most rigorous. It is not that a mathematician thinks in terms of equations, any more than a novelist sees words and types them onto a page. A novelist sees characters, life, events, reality that they channel onto a page via the medium of words. That too is not something that I espouse as a remote and clinical observer, but something that I have experienced in writing the novels in the Essene Camelot series. They may not be big novels, they may have little impact, but the experience of writing them was fascinating, and from what I’ve read of other novelists, that experience is not unique. It is common. And therein lies the essence of true divinity, because when you understand the gift of the mathematician and the gift of the author, you understand a little of the gift of everything, of being human. It is an irony that the greatest scientists, the greatest authors, the greatest athletes, all tap into their divinity without, in many or most cases, any sense as to why or how or what it is they are doing. That does not matter, and that is the important thing, the gift of being human: that it doesn’t matter what you believe, only that you embrace it if it serves you, and consider an alternative if it doesn’t. Chocolate or vanilla? How much of a debate could we have as to which was better, which was right, which was real? Yet what on earth does it matter. And for some people it will be strawberry. It’s a taste, a preference. Atheists prefer to go through life seeing ‘reality’. Religious adherents prefer to go through life seeing ‘divinity’, but sadly I would have to challenge their perception of divinity. Too easily it becomes a perspective that is clouded and defensive. Divinity has no interest in whether or not you believe or someone else believes. Divinity is content to offer the opportunity to experience life. Embracing your divinity is th

Young Love and Lincoln Park By Marybeth Rua-Larsen Fans of Steve Manchester's novels will not be disappointed in this vignette of young love, summer fun and, for South Coast locals, a nostalgic portrait of Lincoln Park. A mini-prequel to Pressed Pennies, Manchester introduces the characters of Abby and Rick as childhood sweethearts enjoying a 70's style summer on Wilbur Avenue -- out of the house after breakfast and home when the street lights come on. Manchester captures all the joy and adventure of summer vacation while acknowledging the growing tensions of family and impending adulthood. The chapter dedicated to the kids' full day at Lincoln Park, described in all its hey-day glory, is worth the purchase price of this charmer.

Steven Manchester's WILBUR AVENUE reminds us of the preciousness of life By Cyrus Webb Leave it to Steven Manchester to tell a story that will not only entertain, inspire and give you hope for the future. In WILBUR AVENUE we are taken into the innocence of Abby and Rick's life: understanding that together they seem whole while apart Abby was living in a warzone known as her own. When his family decides on a move, who would have known the way things would affect not only them but Abby and her world too. Though we know that things do come full-circle, WILBUR AVENUE encourages us to enjoy the moment, knowing that the time we have right now may never come again.

I've been fortunate to read some of them prior to them being published, as he's been a friend for a very long time. I would recommend all of his stories, but I have to say "The Rocking Chair" has always been my favorite!Definitely read Steve's work. You will never be disappointed.

0 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Don't waste your time or money! By Thomas A cox iii Don't waste your time OR money on this. The author just goes back and tells the beginnings of the characters. While the author is great she needs to keep in mind that people enjoy this series and may be disappointed to find out they waited this long for the story to continue and it doesn't . I'm very disappointed that this was all there was to the book. I won't be preordering anymore of her books and most likely won't buy the next in the series if there is one. I pre ordered and counted down the days to find out what happens and all I got was back story?? REALLY?? The author thinks that's what we wanted? So disappointed!

Jessica Meigs definitely succeeds in doing that. I love her characters and enjoy the development of them. The story has just the right amount of suspense to keep you turning those pages. I favorably recommend this book for those of you who enjoy this genre.

Christmas morning. A blinding snowstorm. Three cars, two tractor trailers. Two lives linked by death then disconnected by life. CPR for one. An aspirin for the other. For both, the guilt of survival. The inability to cope. Then a heart-wrenching discovery and the search for a savior. The savior himself also searching, but only for final peace. Adam Connor thinks he is doing the right thing, pulling his car with his pregnant wife and two children off I-80 during a Christmas morning snowstorm. A car has crashed into the wooded thicket separating the east and west lanes, and he is overwhelmed with the need to help. Fifty feet into the woods he finds a car with the driver dead and the passenger dying. When the unconscious passenger’s breathing stops and no pulse can be found, Adam brings the young woman back to life with CPR just before the EMTs arrive. Emerging from a weeklong coma twenty-eight year-old Addie Harris is told she is now a widow. She is also told that she is alive only because of a Good Samaritan. As Addie recovers, her few attempts to locate the Samaritan go nowhere and she eventually returns to the life of meaningless sexual encounters she had been living before meeting her late husband. Several months later, Addie discovers the heart-wrenching headline of a newspaper article. And so begins the search for the man to whom she now owes more than her life. A search that eventually leads to Dublin and the coast of Ireland, and her savior, who possibly now needs someone to save him. From himself?

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Loved It! By Amazon Customer I have been waiting for another book from this author for FIVE YEARS. His first book Blink Once to Spread Snow is an absolute joy. If you’ve read it or heard about it, you know it fits neatly in the genre of historical fiction. Characters interacting with people and facts from the Great Depression and World War II make this my favorite kind of fiction. So when I read the tease on Amazon for this new book, my first reaction was disappointment. From I-80 to Glasgow is definitely not historical fiction. But I loved it. Both novels have main characters that are consumed by guilt. But unlike Cal Brenneman who mans up and lives his life the best he can, regardless of how he fails to protect members of his family, both Adam Connor and Addie Harris find themselves incapable of rising above much of anything. Especially Adam. But then again… well, it’s very difficult to offer much information about either Adam or Addie without spoiling three of the most heartfelt moments in the book. I can say, however, that despite the dark paths these two often find themselves on, you can’t help finding yourself emotionally caught up in their struggles. You like these people despite their flaws. And you hope that somehow they will finally meet again. The devastation on Christmas morning, the trial three months later, the stupid and dangerous things each of them do, all become steps along the way to an ending that is both satisfying and credible. As much as I liked the two main characters, however, my favorite character is Jeannie, the old woman Adam befriends on the plane to Dublin. An early Alzheimer’s sufferer she has made her getaway from a nursing home in the States so she can return to her native Ireland to die without forcing her children to watch her pathetic decline. She and Adam have two more encounters before the novel ends and each meeting not only makes her a more interesting character, but adds another layer to Adam and his understanding of himself. From I-80 to Galway Bay will grab you by your emotions and take you on an unforgettable trip from a Christmas morning tragedy in Pennsylvania to a nursing home beside Galway Bay seven months later. When you finish turning the last page, you’ll find this trip was well worth the taking.

About the Author Nessmuk was the pen name of George Washington Sears (December 2, 1821-May 1, 1890). He was a sportswriter for Forest and Stream magazine in the 1880s and an early conservationist. His stories popularized self-guided canoe camping tours of the Adirondack lakes in open, lightweight solo canoes and what is today called ultralight camping. He died on Mount Nessmuk, Pennsylvania.

Unfortunately, the ebook available in the kindle store is the image-free version. The book, including images, is available from the Project Gutenberg Web site. This book is a fantastic book. Much of the information is dated, but it's still pertinent to camping today. Technology has changed, but the wood haven't changed THAT much.

4 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Woodcraft is camping, great narrative voice, images missing By AnnC I picked up this book hoping Woodcraft might have to do with carpentry or somehow building stuff from wood. It doesn't. Woodcraft means camping, which is also fun. I've only skimmed through the book, but I find the authors tone very conversational and compelling.Unfortunately, it seems the original book had plenty of illustrations that are not included in the Kindle free edition. The text discusses the missing illustrations a good deal. From my scan of this book, I think it would be inspirational before a camping vacation. It also seems to offer very reasonable advice regarding what items might be helpful and which are better left at home (or at the store). For those interested in camping or camping history, this is probably an interesting book. I really like the writing. Certainly some of the content will be dated.

The piano accordion experienced a roller coaster ride of popularity--rise to fame on the airwaves, stage and silver screen, then a deathly decline, followed by a pop culture resurgence. Squeeze This! rolls out a history of the squeezebox with the first book-length study of its fascinating role in twentieth-century American music and culture.   Focusing on key moments of transition, ethnomusicologist and accordion enthusiast Marion Jacobson shows how the instrument came to be celebrated by ethnic musical communities and mainstream fans alike. She also explores the accordion's rebirth in contemporary music, from the parodies of "Weird Al" Yankovic to geek rock legends They Might Be Giants to accordion-wielding superstars like Bruce Springsteen and Sheryl Crow.   Loaded with images of gorgeous instruments, virtuoso performers, and rabid fans, Squeeze This! presents the untold story of America's rich accordion culture.

Review

"A serious work of musical and cultural history."--Shelf Awareness

"Using meticulous research, Jacobson not only touches on how topics as diverse as immigration, movies, war, and feminism have influenced the accordion's popularity, but she also finds time to drop in countless little known pop culture nuggets about great accordionists."--Publishers Weekly

"A fascinating cultural history of the most underestimated of instruments."--Booklist

"Wunnerful, wunnerful. . . . A delightful and illuminating surprise."--The Wall Street Journal

"An illuminating and occasionally whimsical account, in keeping with the instrument itself."--Library Journal

"Ethnographically rich, compellingly written, and resting on a solid theoretical and methodological foundation, Marion Jacobson's cultural history of the accordion is a welcome addition to the extant literature on popular music, free-reed instruments, and cultural and diaspora studies."--Italian American Review

About the Author Marion Jacobson holds a Ph.D. in music and ethnomusicology from New York University. An accordionist herself, she has performed with klezmer bands and accordion bands, and in old-timey jam sessions, but her favorite spot for gigs is the New York City subway.

13 of 14 people found the following review helpful. "Accordion Industrial Complex" By K. Morrow I owe it to the author for sharing that hilarious phrase because, speaking as someone who grew up in the Fifties--in the middle of the accordion boom--it really seemed like almost every other household had a child taking accordion lessons. My own husband talks about being dragged off of his chair as a seven year old by the rapidly falling bellows. Actually, I have only recently become infatuated with this darn instrument, and the comprehensive nature of this book has filled me in on about as much accordion history and context as I can handle. It's well written and colorfully illustrated, and overall its content is more survey than encyclopedia, to address another reviewer's complaint. The attention devoted to modern incarnations of accordion bands and festivals is helpful real-time because, hey, I might just want to check out those events in Texas or Sonoma County, California.

11 of 12 people found the following review helpful. an overview of the (mostly) piano accordion By Zighi While I am v. pleased to see a new book on the accordion, I was a little disappointed in its contemporary emphasis on what I would categorize as the amateur world of squeezing. I realize that the author is an ethnomusiciologist but it seemed that the s/heroic musicians who forged the accordion's existence were relegated to little more than lists of names; whereas, some of the more 'in your face' performers and 'novelty acts' may have been given an inordinate emphasis. Still, she managed to include virtually everyone! Some references seemed inaccurate; Misspellings and incorrect information appeared throughout including typos (probably needed a better copy editor). Still, the accordion world should welcome this addition; it will serve to fill in the gaps in its history. I appreciate the tribute to some of the major players (some glaring omissions!) who did raise awareness, demonstrated the accordion's special qualities, and greatly contributed to the accordion's presence in world music. It is an enjoyable (not too technical) read, but even some of the mechanical (interior) changes were addressed to show how its evolution ultimately resulted in a superior instrument. Thank you, Sheri

10 of 11 people found the following review helpful. Hippest Instrument in Musical History By GintGotham A friend recently sent me a public-radio interview in which Professor Marion Jacobson discusses her fascinating book "Squeeze This! A Cultural History of the Accordion in America." After hearing the broadcast, in which audio samples portray the "scrappy squeezebox" as "most ridiculed" and "kitschy," I asked myself: "Why have I been pumping this infernal `stomach Steinway' (or `navel Novachord') three hours a day for almost sixty-five years?" To answer that question, I ordered the book from Amazon.Growing up Polish in Chicago during the 1940s, when a salesman from Wilkins School of Music visited us on April 25, 1949, I already knew what an accordion was. With my approval, my dad bought into the concept, and my first lesson was on May 9, 1949. The rest is history--jamming with the likes of the Duke and Gerry; working for Gatemouth, and Fred Wesley. But after reading Ms. Jacobson's scholarly prose, I'm still not sure I can come up with an answer. Her academic style impresses me, along with the numerous anecdotes and endnotes, colorfully illustrated photographs, humor, and information and links about the history and marketing of the accordion (except for "old-timey jam sessions," she defines concepts I've wondered about for years). However, as well-researched as the story appears to be, Ms. Jacobson relates only a tiny piece of a much larger picture. What I found disappointing was her lack of sensitivity toward my axe, comparing it to the guitar, and perpetuating myths that serious accordionists have been trying to bury for years. She allots inordinate space to talented entertainers like Contino, Welk, and the two Yankovics, while those who made the accordion one of the hippest instruments in musical history are innocently ignored. I can understand the author's fascination with "the amateur world of squeezing" (as one reviewer puts it); the accordion is very difficult to master. But she leaves out the accordionists who motivate us to become what Joshua Camp calls those "serious-chops" guys (or gals).Fortunately, most of the following artists--living and dead--who are conspicuously absent from this treatise can be heard with a click of the mouse: Nick Ariondo, Wolmer Beltrami, Joe Burke, Lanny Di Jay, Milton DeLugg, Ernie Felice, Gordie Fleming, Richard Galliano, Julie Gardner, Tommy Gumina, Alice Hall, Pete Jolly, Kato Kanako, Gorni Kramer, Mat Mathews, Johnny Meijer, Russ Messina, Mie Miki, Eddie Monteiro (his comments appear on the frontispiece), Joe Natoli, Cory Pesaturo, Leon Sash, George Shearing, Cornell Smelser, Reno Tondelli, Joe Vito, and others too numerous to mention; but they are part of the answer as to why one plays an accordion. To slight these people would be like writing a history of the Republican Party, and omitting Medill, Greeley or Lincoln. For those who know nothing about the accordion, oversights of this kind create a disservice. I feel this book is frightfully lopsided and demonstrates a shortcoming inherent in a lot of academic writing by those with scholarly credentials: it can appear credible to neophytes. There's more to the accordion than "Lady of Spain" or "Who Stole the Keeshka?"Hopefully, when the sequel to "Squeeze This!" is published, Marion Jacobson will fill us in on the rest of the narrative, because she writes well; but the accordion is more than just "Wunnerful, wunnerful." It's spectacular to us serious-chops guys!Squeeze This!: A Cultural History of the Accordion in America (Folklore Studies in Multicultural World)

In "Silent Killer" Dr. Hansler is warning everyone of the deadly dangers that exist in using ordinary, everyday, light bulbs. Doubling the risk for breast cancer and prostate cancer is just the beginning. Using ordinary light bulbs before bedtime is making it hard to fall asleep and stay asleep. Increased risk for obesity, diabetes, heart disease and Alzheimer's disease are other dangers. Fortunately, we don't have to give up using light. We only need to get rid of the blue rays. Light bulbs that don't make blue light and orange eyeglasses that block it are available at www.lowbluelights.com

Leopold Classic Library is delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive collection. As part of our on-going commitment to delivering value to the reader, we have also provided you with a link to a website, where you may download a digital version of this work for free. Many of the books in our collection have been out of print for decades, and therefore have not been accessible to the general public. Whilst the books in this collection have not been hand curated, an aim of our publishing program is to facilitate rapid access to this vast reservoir of literature. As a result of this book being first published many decades ago, it may have occasional imperfections. These imperfections may include poor picture quality, blurred or missing text. While some of these imperfections may have appeared in the original work, others may have resulted from the scanning process that has been applied. However, our view is that this is a significant literary work, which deserves to be brought back into print after many decades. While some publishers have applied optical character recognition (OCR), this approach has its own drawbacks, which include formatting errors, misspelt words, or the presence of inappropriate characters. Our philosophy has been guided by a desire to provide the reader with an experience that is as close as possible to ownership of the original work. We hope that you will enjoy this wonderful classic book, and that the occasional imperfection that it might contain will not detract from the experience.

By ChristineDux I never knew the size and shape of my problem until I read this book.If I get a headache, I think my life is over; all is lost, no halfway measures, it's a terminal diagnosis. That's the way this guy spends his whole life! This book made me see the absurdity of my compulsion. I'm not rid of it, but now I know it's a common affliction.Read it and laugh at yourself.

Good story *some spoilers* By Trish This was a good story, but the whole thing was ruined for me with him sleeping with those two girls, in his room, where he knew she would see. I know they weren't technically together, but they kind of were. That was so totally unnecessary that it left a bad taste in my mouth for the whole rest of the story. A guy is so over the moon for a girl that to prove that she means nothing to him he sleeps with not one but two girls? Thinking about it, but not doing it is one thing, but to bring them home where he knows she's coming home after work and walking into that is unforgivable. And then when it went back to his point of view, you never know what he thought about it. Why did he do that? Did he feel guilty? He had to have seen the look on her face. He seemed so into her, then accepts an invite from two sluts right in front of her. But then, it's never mentioned again from him. I would have liked to have heard some guilt from him, maybe that would have made me hate it less. This probably would have gotten five stars from me, but like I said, that one part ruined the whole thing.

I've read a lot of them. I consider her one of my go to authors. I've never read anything by Anna Hart.So... When this book popped up. I couldn't wait to read it!I pretty much knew early on that this book was different.I have to admit. I wasn't really feeling this book. I liked how the book started. Strong and shocking and it was in your face. I thought as I was reading it.Yes! I'm in for a good read!But...Once the the Stone brothers were introduced. It pretty much went down hill for me.The contest they had going on.... Felt childish. And kind of took away from the story for me. The brothers thought of girls as numbers!I mean... Really "sticky fingers".Grown men acting like pigs! That whole contest was just gross. My opinion of them was not good!And... That kind of set the whole tone of this book for me.Colt and Jade started off so strong. I felt their connection. Colt felt it too.But once colt went off with Jen & Tina. I just couldn't stand him. And Jade never asked Colt about it. Which irritated me. A girl just willing to accept what was in front of her.... No explanations.And... Colt would let some of these girls sit on his lap or rub up against him. In front of Jade! But Jade could not talk to anyone. I HATE those kind of situation in books.I wasn't really feeling the way Hunter was treating Amy aka street either. Why would she just allow herself to be second best. Just aggravated me. Hunters can be with as many women as he wants. But EVERYBODY knows not to talk to or ask Amy out. And even when Amy does go out. She doesn't give the guy a chance.Now... That gets to me.After Colt and Jade got together the story pretty much was ok. But how the brothers were. I just couldn't get into it.

It guaranteed that I'll never ever read these authors again that's for sure. It doesn't't matter how gritty a book is it's not ok to have your characters be complete trash not worth the thought process it took to make him. Jade is just a too stupid to live female that has no spine! If I'd seen some shot like that he'd have been looking forever for what was left of his balls! Piece of crap there's the words for his ass! This story incensed me as an avid reader because that is not technically the way abused peeps act! Maybe what these authors should do is get our facts right and write an awe inspiring book & make survivors instead of trash. I feel short changed.
