Beginning with a childhood lived without a father, lost to war, she describes the effects of his loss on her mother, her sister, and herself. The book is in many ways a love story, portraying the love of Gladdie for her husband, her children, her work, her friends, and her life. Through happy times and terrible tragedies, this love is reflected through the writing. The story deals with Alzheimer's and its devastating effects, on her grandmother, her friend, and herself. As we see Gladdie lose all that makes her the woman she has been, we feel the emptiness and heartbreak the victims and their families must deal with. This is a sensitive, beautifully written book by an author who takes us within the lives of each of her characters.
