Helm, who was a survivor of the Fort Dearborn Massacre. Helm wrote the manuscript two years after the end of the War of 1812. He didn't publish it because he was advised that his description in the book of being disrespectful to his commanding officer might end in his court-marital. The manuscript was found many years later and was originally published in 1912. This book is a faithful re-print of that publishing. The book itself is absorbing and very interesting. The fate of the residents of Fort Dearborn was horrific and is described in great detail as is the story of the survivors. The story is told in the first person which draws the reader even further into the action. I highly recommend this book to all early American history buffs and anyone who is interested in the history of the War of 1812. I also highly recommend this book to anyone who likes a good story because you will find one in this book. Buy it, read it, enjoy it.

A song of the English. Illustrated, by Rudyard Kipling

About the Author Nobel prize-winning writer Rudyard Kipling was born in Bombay, India, but returned with his parents to England at the age of five. Influenced by experiences in both India and England, Kipling s stories celebrate British imperialism and the experience of the British soldier in India. Amongst Kipling s best-known works are The Jungle Book, Just So Stories, and the poems Mandalay and Gunga Din. Kipling was the first English-language writer to receive the Nobel prize for literature (1907) and was amongst the youngest to receive the award. Kipling died in 1936 and is interred in Poets Corner in Westminster Abbey.W. Heath Robinson (1872 1944) was a British cartoonist. Trained in painting at the Royal Academy of Arts, he eventually became so well-known for the madcap contraptions that were the subject of cartoons in popular weeklies that a codebreaking device was named after him during WWII.

Chose this as a glimpse of what lovers of Kipling were talking about and thought this was not a great choice, but really haven't read it all.

This award-winning amply illustrated volume of informative essays and vibrant prints by the current members of the California Society of Printmakers was published to commemorate its 2013 centennial year. Readers interested in knowing more about how a small group of prominent artist-etchers in Northern California formulated an aspirational society near the turn of the 20th century and transformed itself over the course of one hundred years—welcoming artists, working in all printmaking media, into its company from around the United States and abroad—will find the ideal source in this lush book. California Society of Printmakers: One Hundred Years, 1913-2013 offers a comprehensive set of knowledgeable viewpoints and personal anecdotes about its rich history by four diverse artists, a respected curator, a dealer in fine prints, and a noted visual resources artist/librarian. What makes this book so luminous and up-to-date are the 250+ reproductions of woodcuts, lithographs, etchings, screenprints, monoprints, monotypes, solarplates, and mixed digital and photo-based hybrid prints by the talented membership of this international society of both young and established artists. To celebrate its publication, the Library of Congress welcomed many original prints illustrated in this volume into its collection. The book contains member artists’ bios, extensive notes, detailed appendices, a glossary, and bibliography, and is a valuable resource for artists, collectors, curators, historians, and anyone who appreciates fine art prints and printmaking.  In 2014 ARLIS (Art Libraries Society of North America) conferred its Worldwide Books Publication of the Year Award on this book.

I wish Becca would realize that Sara is out to cause problems and to believe in Chance. I also hope Chance doesn't sit back and take what Sara has dished out along with his Dad. In the end, I can only hope true love finds it's way into their hearts! I definitely recommend this series and Ellie Danes, once again, hasn't disappointed me!

Between the Sack of Rome by the Gauls in 390 BC and the middle of the second century BC, a part-time army of Roman peasants, under the leadership of the ruling oligarchy, conquered first Italy and then the whole of the Mediterranean.

The loyalty of these marauding heroes, and of the Roman population as a whole, to their leaders was assured by a share in the rewards of victory, rewards which became steadily less accessible as the empire expanded – promoting a decline in loyalty of cataclysmic proportions. Wars, rural impoverishments, civil discord and slavery are a few of the subjects covered in this study.

The Roman Republic (Fontana History of the Ancient World), by Michael Crawford

Review During the centuries of its history the republic burst its city-state shell... Wars, rural impoverishment, the concentration of wealth in the hands of a few families, civil discord, the increase in number of slaves and robbery of overseas provinces caused irreversible changes... This is the material of Crawford's study. He handles its complexities with acuteness and balance. He is sophisticated about political motives and economic causes... Crawford's readable book is a fine contribution to the understanding of this important period. (Times Higher Education Supplement)Well-informed, lively.. The work conveys a remarkable quantity of information... Students will benefit greatly from Crawford's obvious enthusiasm for historical research and for finding explanations of complex phenomena. (Journal of Roman Studies)

About the Author MICHAEL CRAWFORD, a staff artist at The New Yorker, has been contributing cartoons and illustrations since 1983. He also swears he has a better ERA for the company softball team than "Beanball Bob Mankoff."

45 of 48 people found the following review helpful. Too spartan for a novice, irrelevant for an expert By A Customer I was extremely disappointed with this book. It might just be useful as a supplemental college text, in a class in which multiple primary materials are read along with additional secondary material and which has a fine professor. Otherwise, its gaps, disjointed organization, and assumptions can be quite irritating for the reader. Don't even bother if you are not acquainted with ancient history. If you are, this book is more likely to leave you frustrated than informed. The author makes an implicit assumption that the reader is familiar with Latin (I am, but he didn't know that), and organizes the material neither chronologically nor thematically but a hybrid of each in which thematic chapters alternate with chronological ones. This would work except that the themes refer partly to the chapter before and partly to the chapter following which I found cumbersome. Major events such as the Punic Wars are handled in a cursory fashion, and little to no attention is paid to the acquisition and government of the provinces. Rome is repeatedly refered to as an oligarchy without once examining what that means. Lastly, the author covers much of the omissions with flat statements about the unreliability of existing sources (e.g. Plutarch) without discussing why, or to what extent. Instead, the reader is treated to the author's unexplained theories, and much rectitude concerning their superiority over others. Avoid this book unless you have literally read eveything else on the subject and still haven't had enough.

21 of 22 people found the following review helpful. Res Publica By Michael Taylor Michael Crawford's book is not for the novice. Those unfamiliar with the chronology of the Roman Republic will find his analysis confusing, as Crawford assumes his reader has considerable background in Republican Roman history and culture. For those with a decent hold on the events of the Republic, Crawford's keen analytical text to highly worthwhile. He examines the relationship between members of the Roman oligarchy, discusses the successful consolidation of Italy, examines the conquest of the provinces and its effect on Roman politics, and finally deals with the political destabilization that led to the rise of warlords such as Marius, Pompey, and Caesar. His book is part of an essential bibliography for any Classics major or Roman history buff.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. For post-doctoral specialists in the classics only. By Federal Farmer At 200 short pages I thought this would be a nice introduction to the history of the Roman Republic. An introduction it was not. I am sure it is well-written for its audience, but the author assumes his reader already possesses an extensive knowledge of the republic, which makes me wonder why you would then want to read it. It is too subtle even for the thoroughly educated literati (did I use that word correctly?). Anyway, I bought the book, so by gosh, I read it! More seriously, the title and notes on the back are terribly misleading. Somewhere the notes need to convey that the book is intended only for specialists.A new title is in order: "Scholarly Reflections on the Roman Republic," perhaps?

The Pleasure of Your Company, by S. D. Turner

Review "An art historian tries to make sense of her family's secrets while caring for an ailing parent in Turner's debut novella set in the late 1990s.Katie has one goal in mind when she returns home to upstate New York: secure care--in-home or otherwise--for her 82-year-old father. In the two years since his wife died, retired attorney Edward Broadbent has been "shrinking" away, rapidly losing weight and his vision as he battles a congestive heart condition and macular degeneration. Katie initially plans a quick visit, but nagging issues from the past and a desire to finally connect lead to an extended stay. There "are some things I need to know before my father dies," Katie tells her husband, Henry, who remains in Los Angeles with their two children. Over the course of her visit, she attempts to coax more information from her father about his Iowa upbringing ("I look at Dad, thinking for the umpteenth time how little I know of his boyhood. Born in Fort Dodge, a small city I've never been to"). And she tries to discuss her mother's debilitating mental illness--a topic seldom examined, or even acknowledged, in their previous talks. As the roles of parent and child begin to blur, Katie must answer some tough questions while struggling to determine what her father really needs in his final years. Using events from the family's past and present, Turner explores the complexity of familial bonds in this highly relatable work of literary fiction. Early in this satisfying book, she notes: "Someone, Proust I think, said that we only truly see someone we love after an absence, and then only if we see them first before they see us." Turner's protagonist experiences similar clarity. When Edward greets his daughter at the airport, the once-powerful lawyer uses a cane and wears a smile of "frozen amicability"--a conversational countermeasure he's adopted now that his poor eyesight prevents him from reading facial cues. The shift in power frightens Katie and removes both characters from their established roles. Yet as both gain their footing in this new reality, there are also moments of unexpected joy. Sincere and captivating, a revelatory look at the freeing properties of forgiveness and acceptance." -- Kirkus Reviews

About the Author S. D. Turner, a lawyer and graduate of Sotheby's American Arts Course, received her M.F.A. in fiction writing from Vermont College. This is her first book. She has previously published feature articles in Art & Auction Magazine.

With sharp intellectual insight and heart warming empathy, Katie interacts with her very accomplished father as he faces that slow decline in capabilities that the end of life brings. This story validates both the joy and sorrow inherent in every parent –child relationship. It is a short, beautifully detailed , almost poetic tale about the competing pulls of love and life.

By Amazon Customer This is a beautifully written, sensitive account of the inevitable reversal in the parent-child relationship with an aging parent. We all go through this in some way. Here, the adult child is longing for that closeness with her father that she felt she was denied due to family circumstances. She also longs for answers to certain family issues long avoided. If you have already experienced this in your own family, you know the answers but may wish to relive them here. If you have not yet experienced the trauma of feeling responsible for an elderly parent who has not relinquished his self-determining role,, read this perceptive and revealing account before you unwittingly make the same mistakes. A beautifully written story of father daughter relationships By wayne r cardillo A beautifully written story of father daughter relationships, skeletons in the closet, and swapping roles of parent and child. The history we construct as children and take with us to adulthood weaves a poignant story of love, loyalty, demons and sweetness. S.D. Turner tells a story you can touch, feel, and visualize on every page, every sentence. I can smell the furniture in the den, see the photographs on the wall and understand the gentle love of unspoken words. If you have a family, you have a story and this is one that is raw and tender throughout.

In presenting Ben, the Luggage Boy, to the public, as the fifth of the Ragged Dick Series, the author desires to say that it is in all essential points a true history; the particulars of the story having been communicated to him, by Ben himself, nearly two years since. In particular, the circumstances attending the boy's running away from home, and adopting the life of a street boy, are in strict accordance with Ben's own statement. While some of the street incidents are borrowed from the writer's own observation, those who are really familiar with the different phases which street life assumes in New York, will readily recognize their fidelity. The chapter entitled "The Room under the Wharf" will recall to many readers of the daily journals a paragraph which made its appearance within two years. The writer cannot close without expressing anew his thanks for the large share of favor which has been accorded to the volumes of the present series, and takes this opportunity of saying that, in their preparation, invention has played but a subordinate part. For his delineations of character and choice of incidents, he has been mainly indebted to his own observation, aided by valuable communications and suggestions from those who have been brought into familiar acquaintance with the class whose mode of life he has sought to describe. NEW YORK, APRIL 5, 1876.

I have just finished reading this and I have a mighty big lump in my throat. From the beginning in reading of Ben's temper and rash decision to run away to the sweet end of turning his life around and coming back home. Alger had me completely captivated.....again....lolI do wish that Richard Hunter (ragged Dick) had been in the story but it's still awesome. I can not wait to read the next story. (Rufus and Rose I believe) :)

The story of Sequential Circuits, the leading synthesizer manufacturer of the 1980s. One of the great American synthesizer companies, founded and led by San Francisco electronics and computer graduate, Dave Smith, Sequential Circuits Inc. paved the way for music of the future. Smith brought easy, affordable and powerful polyphonic synthesis to all levels of music production in the form of the ground-breaking Prophet-5 synthesizer. Released in 1978, the Prophet led the new wave movement into the next decade, creating a sonically exciting soundtrack to eighties culture. It expanded the palette of all music genres and was embraced by professionals and amateurs alike. Sequential Circuits went on to create further innovative concepts and products such as programmable effects, MIDI, multitimbrality, high-quality sampling, workstation and MPC systems and many more. Today the Prophet-5 is very much sought-after as one of those truly iconic classic musical instruments. The book features many exclusive and highly entertaining and informative stories from ex-Sequential staff, music industry moguls, and famous keyboard players. Includes over 240 photos and illustrations (paperback)

The Prophet from Silicon Valley: The Complete Story of Sequential Circuits, by David Abernethy, A Morris AM Publishing New Zealand

Review  Mark Vail, Music journalist, author, teacher, musician:  "The story of Sequential Circuits includes thrilling successes and unfortunate demise. Thanks to Dave Smith's contributions to electronic music, we in the industry owe him dearly. Through thorough research and by reaching out to many artists who benefited from Sequential Circuits' instruments and Dave Smith's work, David Abernethy delivers the essence of the story in this beautifully written and detailed book."Dominic Milano, Keyboard magazine writer/reviewer, editor: "David Abernethy has left no stone unturned in researching this incredibly detailed account of how Dave Smith and Sequential Circuits unseated Moog and ARP to become the leading synthesizer manufacturer of the 1980s. The Prophet from Silicon Valley is a must-read for synth junkies and students of musical instrument design."Stanley Jungleib, Sequential's Publications Manager, Seer Systems founder: "Sequential was the dominant US synthesizer think-tank for a decade. David Abernethy fairly and carefully accounts for the diverse contributions of the talented lot that made it work. Anyone interested in making their career in this business should study its lessons, as many of Sequential's graduates remain influential in the field to this day."

About the Author David Abernethy is a musician, writer and electrical engineer from Auckland, New Zealand.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Extensively researched and illustrated. Many great synth and synthesist stories--indispensable if you're into analog. By P. Gleeson David Abernathy has done a really amazing job. This, needless to say, will be the definitive book on Dave Smith, Sequential Circuits and the Prophet. Painstakingly researched and beautifully illustrated with many color photos. I'd spring for the paperback edition rather than the Kindle because, as the only person who hasn't given this 5 stars so far has written, the Kindle edition lacks some of the photos.I'm going to say a little more because, as it happens, I'm a small part of the story that Abernathy tells and know many of the other musicians he mentions, owned a couple of those rare single-manual Prophet 10s (and was even crazy and ill-advised enough to do a performance with one of these amazingly unreliable early 10s with a symphony orchestra) and have known Dave Smith since he was this kid who showed up at my studio one evening with his unlikely sequencer design (the tempo range took it up into a range where it behaved like a digital oscillator!).This book wasn't written to make money or for any other reason than just to do something --in this case tell the story of one synthesizer and everyone involved with it -- as well as it can possibly be done. That, to me, is the highest kind of action--doing something as well as it can possibly be done without any particular regard for the rewards. If you're interested in analog synths in the 70s, this is a great read. This book and Mark Vail's are the two essential histories.

So this book sounded very interesting -- and it is. It's very well written and has tons of pictures of the various Sequential Circuits product as well as advertisements and the like. Even though I'm a guitar player and can barely play keyboards, I've had a number of synths over the years just to play around with, and the book has me lusting for a Dave Smith Instruments Prophet 6. This might end up being the most expensive book I've ever bought ;^) .

Khan I've never been much of a player but have always had a technical interest in synthesizers, especially vintage analog/digital hybrid polysynths. The story of Dave Smith and Sequential is very well told here and contains enough technical detail to appeal to someone with a casual interest in synthesizer technology. The author does a great job of linking Sequential's rise and fall with the changing technology and marketplace of the time as well as its own morphing corporate culture. If you're interested in the culture, technology and business of synthesizers, this book should be very appealing.

This comprehensive eBook explores theories about colour psychology as well as colour therapy practices.  Evidence-based information can be hard to find, and this eBook disentangles the intermingling of connotative colour meanings and colour symbolism, and examines the links with Traditional and New Age beliefs. The interface between colour and human response remains a complex interface, open to the influence of many different factors. Despite this, colour psychology and colour therapy theories abound in mainstream media, and the domain is peppered with its share of fakes and fraudsters, some of whom have done jail time.A new model of colour psychology is provided that focusses on personal colour meanings and provides a framework for application in practice. A key benefit of this eBook is that it is updated as new information comes to light. Research in this field is conducted on an ongoing basis and new findings add greater depth and new perspectives.

By Mary Jane Found this to be an incredibly intriguing read on the comparison of colors with our emotions, and how they can affect things like our mood for example. I also thoroughly enjoyed author Zena O'Connor's in depth information on the topic of Color Therapy which up to this point I had no idea even existed! This is definitely a very interesting book and I highly recommend it!

The book is very easy to read its not just loaded up with clinical data like a lot of these kinds of books are. I have learned so much from reading this book, who knew that colours could cause such different reactions in people. I have always been a very colour oriented person and certain colours make me happy but I never really thought about it until now. Lately I have been feeling down and I have been wearing a lot of dark colours, mostly black and I never put the 2 together until now. Read this book you will be amazed at what you learn.

More than 10,000 Australians served with Bomber Command, a highly trained band of elite flyers who undertook some of the most dangerous operations of World War II. They flew raid after raid over France and Germany knowing that the odds were against them. Stretched to breaking point, nearly 3500 died in the air. Their bravery in extreme circumstances has barely been recognized. Peter Rees traces the extraordinary achievements of these young aviators. He tells their hair-raising stories of battle action and life on the ground. And he recounts how, when they returned to Australia, they were greeted as Jap dodgers and accused of "hiding in England while we were doing it tough." Exciting, compelling, and full of life, Lancaster Men is a powerful tribute to these forgotten Australian heroes of World War II.

There was so much to read of the lives of these brave young men, many little more than boys.I was a child on the English south coast during this era, in close proximity to airfields, and remember clearly counting the aircraft going out and then again on return, nearly always a lesser number. There was additional interest in learning about the part played by the Australians, both the hierarchy and the air and ground crews. This book is one to be read by young and old. It serves as a reminder of what was owed to so many who lost their lives before they had hardly begun and to those who survived to tell their tales.I highly recommend this as a book one cannot put down, and I for one, will be reading it again.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Understanding the past By John Davies (Dr) This book touched a personal nerve as my father had some involvement. He never spoke of the experience except when we saw a TV programme on the bombing of Dresden. Through a veil of tears, he just muttered "We didn't know."Rees's very readable book helped fill in many gaps.Highly recommended.

How wrong I was - it is EXTREMELY interesting! The author paints a terrific picture of the lives of the Aussies who crewed on Lancasters during WWII. It is not just a picture of their missions but a very much wider view of their lives as well. The bravery, the tragedy, the near misses, the hits, their fears, their lives away from their aircraft, their desire to return home safely are all told easily and fluently. This is not just a book for those already interested in WWII it will please many other readers as well. Peter has obviously covered a great deal of territory in his research, interviewing the participants who still survive, working with relatives of those who are no longer with us and researching many volumes devoted to the topic to build almost a novel rather than a reference. The reader becomes involved with the participants, feeling their pain, rejoicing in their safety and grieving over their demise.I thoroughly commend this book to all readers.

An in-depth look at the challenging lives of Australia's gutsy rural vets—smart, spirited men and women who care for animals, big and small, in remote communities all over the country. The stakes are high for the vets charged with caring for Australia's rural livestock, wildlife, and beloved family pets. Those who call the outback home often depend on animals for their wellbeing—and, in many cases, their livelihood. In far southwest Queensland, Rachel Wilson and Will Nason vet all the horses at the famous Birdsville Races; in the Victorian High Country, Dave Hall's own life-threatening car accident fired his ambition to make a difference; and in her mixed practice in northwest New South Wales, lone vet Mary-Jane Stutsel has had seven days off-call in 20 years. Among others, we also meet Jan Allen, who works with camp dogs in remote Indigenous communities in the Top End, and adventurous Rick Fenny in the vast Pilbara, who cared for the region's beloved nomad kelpie, Red Dog.Outback Vets is a walk on Australia's wild side, from the glistening coast to the dusty desert. Get to know these hard-working animal lovers as they ride, drive, and fly across some of the most remote regions of Australia, rescuing and treating creatures great and small.

Mina’s Revolution, a historical saga set in Iran and the US. The story covers the life of an Iranian-American woman, before, during, and after the 1979 Islamic Revolution in Iran through to the morning of Sept. 11, 2001. Mina Sha’abani, born a year before the 1953 CIA-backed coup d’état in Iran and raised during the Shah’s White Revolution, gets involved in the Islamic Revolution in her early 20s. While pregnant with the illegitimate child of a political leader, she escapes to the US, in the hopes of a better life for herself and her child. In Los Angeles, in the midst of the hostage crisis, she faces the Americans’ animosity against her and her daughter Shirin. When she finds and meets one of her political mentors from Iran, Zary, her life begins to go through yet another series of changes and she has to make some more hard choices. Mina's Revolution is about growing up, making choices under pressure, struggling with morality issues, and finding grace against a backdrop of rebellion and revolution. It is the story of a life roiled by political and personal upheavals, the story of a woman who keeps trying to achieve inner peace while living in turbulent times.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A tour de force worthy of film adaptation! By Sichelgaita If ever a book deserved a screenwriter's attention, this is it. Mina's world might be set in Iran and California, but the book's themes are universal: the innocence of children, the ideals of youth and the disillusionment that all too often follows. The maxim that politics makes strange bedfellows could hardly have a better example than in the depicted untenable union of communists and conservatives in a struggle to remove the last Shah of Iran. Mina flees her country for more than one reason. Her sense of isolation, anger and desperation are particularly palpable through the author's utilization of internal dialogue. The images presented to the reader as Mina struggles to understand a new way of life are powerful and occasionally haunting: a happy family outing that turns into embarrassment for Mina's parents for a reason unimaginable today; Mina sitting in JFK Airport for hours after missing her connecting flight, incapable of understanding the announcements; her response to the heartbreaking letter she receives from her sister advising her that returning home is no longer an option; the conclusion she reaches about herself and her daughter when she feels no alternatives remain; and a life-changing chance encounter. Before one can find happiness, one needs to define it which Mina eventually does. To say whether or not she attains it would give too much away. Those with an editor's eye might pick up a rare error here and there and New Yorkers will spot a geographical slip, but rather than being a distraction they convey the sense that Mina is a real person, capable of error, but equally capable of redemption.

I am an American woman married to an Iranian man and he has shared with me many things about his culture over the years. This book, however, gives the reader an insight into the true culture and thought process of women during and after the Iranian Revolution. Mehrnoosh Mazarei has so masterfully told the story of Mina's dreams, desires and struggles - all of which define her power to impact and keep the reader engaged. I truly believe if and when Mina's Revolution hits the big screen, it will command the praise of many from vast gender, social and political segments within our society. Until then, I will hope for a sequel.

As someone who is familiar with the community, I found it an accurate account of an Iranian woman migrating to the US after the 1979 revolution, told in an authentic language. The reading glides through. The plot keeps your interest. I gave it five star because I would definitely recommend it to anyone who is interested to know more about the Iranian-American community and to have a more personal account of the Iranian revolution.

The Sampson-Matthews print program was the largest public art project in Canadian history. Launched at the start of the Second World War, it lasted 22 years and cost tens of millions of dollars. The exquisite, oversize silkscreens were based on designs by a who’s who of Canada’s greatest artists, including David Milne, Emily Carr, B.C. Binning, Lawren Harris and A.Y. Jackson, Tom Thomson, J.W. Morrice and Clarence Gagnon. The idea that launched the project was simple. Get Canada’s best painters to contribute to the war effort by creating new works, guided by the National Gallery. Toronto printer Sampson-Matthews would turn these into high-quality silkscreens, which would then be sent to every military unit and government office from Britain to Ceylon. At the same time, target the home front: schools, libraries, banks, insurance companies. By 1943, the prints were hanging in Eaton’s store windows from coast to coast. The images were so popular that the program went into overdrive after the war. Dozens more artworks were commissioned and tens of thousands more printed. Sets toured the USA, Soviet Russia, war-torn Europe; the Bank of Montreal put them in every branch. The grand landscapes became familiar backdrops for two generations of Canadians. The program was a grandiose exercise in art education, a coming together of culture, commerce and patriotism that only a world war could ever create. Watch the film Argo and you’ll see two prints in the Tehran embassy scenes, benevolent totems assuring the plotters that everything will be alright; this is Canada, relax. Art for War and Peace tells the story of the Sampson-Matthews prints, with full-colour reproductions of 112 silkscreens and contributions from several art writers, including Douglas Coupland.

Art for War and Peace: How a Great Public Art Project Helped Canada Discover Itself, by Ian Sigvaldason, Scott Steedman

Review "Ian Sigvaldason and Scott Steedman’s Art for War and Peace: How A Great Art Project Helped Canada Discover Itself uncovers an important chapter in the adolescent years of Canadian identity, detailing how these landscapes ― mostly of the Canadian Shield and painted mainly by Toronto urbanites ― came to be imprinted on our national DNA. In gorgeous, full-colour reproduction and stuffed with supplementary material such as sales catalogues, pages about framing options, and decals with care instructions (“Should the surface become soiled it may readily be cleaned by sponging with soap and water”), the book is an expertly collected document of the early efforts made by a young, spirited country desperate to define itself." ~Toronto Star, Chris Hampton"This is a gorgeous book." ~Stephen Quinn, Host of CBC Radio's On the Coast

About the Author Ian Sigvaldason is the owner of the Pegasus Gallery of Canadian Art on Salt Spring Island, British Columbia; he has been mesmerized by the Sampson-Matthews prints for many years, and curates the website sampsonmatthewsprints.com. Scott Steedman is an editor, writer and publishing consultant, and an Adjunct Professor at Simon Fraser University, Vancouver. He co-edited Visions of British Columbia, winner of the 2010 City of Vancouver Book Award.
