That’s me—Tingly Simmons—athlete, foreign-language major, professor lover, obsessed idiot girl. Definitely not a frat rat or sorority slut. I’ve never even played beer pong. I ditched the vapid, soulless high-society life of Los Angeles for the promise of something more meaningful in rural Ohio. Accepting a track scholarship for college, I tried running my way to happiness, but instead I ended up sleeping with my French professor and falling head over heels for him. When that relationship fell apart, so did I. Barely hanging on by a thread and using the most absurd coping skills, I was determined to hide behind my past indiscretions. That was, until I met Tiberius Jones. Never in my wildest dreams did I think I’d learn the truth about love from a six-foot-five basketball player.

No tall truths are self-evident By Vox Libris 3.5 starsThere is no way to begin this review without addressing the name of the main character.Tingly.What parent names a kid TINGLY? Apparently this girl's, and those parents are, as the book indicates, wretched individuals, the naming of their only child notwithstanding.Given that Mr. and Mrs. Simmons are the creations of novelist Rachel Blaufeld, the next question you may have is why a writer would name a character Tingly, a character we are meant to empathize with, like, and believe.Tingly.The definition of tingly is "causing or experiencing a slight prickling or stinging sensation." So perhaps the naming of our heroine is symbolic. For Tingly Simmons, you see, experiences - and causes - considerable prickling and stinging. When you meet her, Tingly is preparing for her junior year of college. She's a distance runner on the track team, having red-shirted her sophomore year after she was found in a state of naked post-coital bliss with her French professor. Voulez vous coucher avec moi, indeed.Disgraced and dumped, Tingly finds herself deeply depressed as well. It was a dark year, and now, after a year of therapy and healing, she's ready for a fresh start. Or as fresh a start as you can have, given that most of the campus thinks of her as the tart who nailed her professor. As Tingly tries to avoid most personal interactions, save that with her roommate, she does not respond well to Tiberius when the two first meet. He's tall, dark, and dangerously handsome, and she can't deny her attraction to him. But sex has long been a weapon for Tingly, something she tends to use as a means of power, and she's desperate to feel a sense of strength. Initially, she inflicts on Tiberius those sensations of slight prickling or stinging. What she's slow to realize, however, that he's inflicting them on her as well. For this relationship to work, Tingly has to make peace with the person she was and the person she has become. It's a slow process, one borne of fits and starts. Every time Tiberius gets too close, Tingly pulls away. This happens a LOT, to the point where you wonder if Tiberius might be something of a masochist. Tingly is intelligent and interesting and all, but she's also prickly and stinging. (GET IT?)What works well in this book is the realistic presentation of Tingly and Tiberius's romance. They not only have to make things work with each other, there is the issue of their friends. Tingly, or, as Tiberius calls her, Rex (it begins as T-Rex and then he shortens it, which, honestly, sounds much better than freaking Tingly), needs to break through the biases held against her by his teammates. She has to prove herself and earn their trust, much like Tiberius needs to earn hers.Verité means truth in French, which is somewhat ironic considering the lies surrounding Tingly's affair with the professor. Then there are the lies within her relationship with her parents, and, most damaging of all, the lies she lets herself believe. More than a romance, this book is about a woman's search for truth - her need for it. Tingly grew up in a toxic home and allowed - pursued, even - toxic things to happen to her. And then she meets Tiberius, whose honesty and transparency is too much for her. She believes herself unworthy, and she will never feel happiness or fulfillment until she accepts the truth - that she is, in fact, quite worthy. This is a new adult romance, which means it has some nicely detailed sexy times. It may take a while for Tiberius and Tingly to rock the headboard, but when they do, Blaufeld makes it worth the wait. For all of Tingly's flaws, there is something about her that attracts Tiberius. And given that he's a pretty good guy, you have to trust his judgment.Review copy provided by the publisher in exchange for an honest review.Published on VoxLibris.net@VoxLibris

Rachel Blaufeld has outdone herself in verite and it quickly became one of favorite reads in 2015. This story swallowed me up and transported me to a college town that I’m pretty sure I was a part of. Rachel has a way with words, and this book being different than her others, pulled at my heart and made me feel for these characters like I hadn’t in a long time. The details and emotions were so real that I forgot about the world around me and just let this story take over in my mind. Not only do we meet challenges with stereotypes, but we are faced with internal battles and ways of coping with the past that are just so true and raw. I love the honesty in this book.Tingly {I want to be friends with her} is facing the consequences of her actions from the year before and trying to restart college where she left off, both with her track team and peers. Speaking of peers, I loved the role the secondary characters played and it all flowed so perfectly.Tiberius is just perfect. He’s the sweet baller with intimidating size and heart of gold. He hasn’t had it easy in life either but his outlook in life is admirable. I want his positivity! Tiberius’ patience, persistence and understanding for Tingly tugged at my heart.I don’t want to give anything away, so I will say that the way these two come together as friends first is wonderful to read. I loved to watch them bloom and the twists and turns Rachel puts us through are fabulous (in a seriously?! kind of way). So perfect.I’m not sure my review can do it justice. I just loved everything about this book. I found myself sighing, smiling, highlighting sentences and making sure this story stayed somewhere deep in my heart for a long time. Amazing book, Rachel. Congrats!

I enjoyed the first, but this was so much better for me. I really connected with the characters and loved the direction the story took. It’s a wonderful NA coming of age book and one that will stay with me.Tingly is coming off a rough year. She’s made some poor decisions in the past, but she’s determined to turn it around. To focus on school and track (she’s an athlete on scholarship). While doing some mandatory study sessions, she meets Tiberius Jones. A new guy on the basketball team. Ty likes Tingly right away. There is something about this girl that makes him want to reach out and be friends with her. Tingly doesn’t make that easy for him.Ty befriends Tingly and gives her the nickname T Rex (which sounds a bit silly but I absolutely loved). He brings her into his fold with the basketball team and even though it’s a bit rocky at first, he gives her a place to belong. A new normal. A group of friends that are like family.I love stories about falling in love. Ones that aren’t rushed and where you can actually see and feel it happening. Once Ty talks Rex into becoming friends with him, it’s not long before she’s falling. Even though she tries really hard not to. Ty is a persistent guy. He’s genuinely a good person. He was raised the right way and it shows. I adored his character. Tingly did things that irked me, but in the end she always came around. This is not your every day sports romance. It’s not just a book about an interracial couple. It’s so much more than that. I loved the writing style, the flow of the book and the characters. Even the ones that took me longer to like, I ended up loving in the end. These characters aren’t perfect (well… except maybe Ty) but they’re real. I know this is a stand-alone but I’m hoping down the line Blaufeld will give us some spin offs- a Jamel, Trey or Lamar book ;)If you like sports romances, coming of age stories and/or new adult reads, this is one I would highly recommend!
