In 1968 Ngaio Marsh took her own Roman holiday (in part to research Italian police procedures) and the change seems to have done her good: Both her British and U.S. agents believed When in Rome to be the finest novel in her "Inspector Alleyn" series. As is so often (and so satisfyingly) the case, the tale concerns a murder within a closed group—in this case, a group of tourists visiting what Marsh calls the "Basilica di San Tommaso," who find themselves fumbling into a complex web of blackmail and drug-smuggling. Adding some irresistible color are depictions of both La Dolce Vita (of which Marsh took a jaundiced view) and the student radicals of the day, whom she seems to have found somewhat more persuasive. All in all, a brilliant example of classic Golden Age plotting melded with a decidedly Space Age cast.

By desertdunes I am a big fan of classic murder mysteries from the first half of the 20th century, probably because the quality of writing is so high. Ngaio Marsh is one of my favorites, because she writes prose with a painter's eye, and her scenes, situations and characters are vividly described. She does not fail in this book, the scenes set underground in the church crypt and excavation are so easy to imagine, all that history and suspense pressing down on each character in the dark. Lovely ending, too, quite suprising for this author.

I love all the familiar characters -- Brer Fox, Troy, etc. And they aren't in this. But Marsh did write a very good book. If it had been a different character, I may have given it 5 stars, but I just missed the regulars and the usual English setting. It is much more adventure/derring-do than the slower paced Marsh books. And as said before, very well written.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Metamorphosis By Midnight Attic Reader Gregor is a young traveling salesman, working hard to support not only himself, but his parents and younger sister, but he wakes up one morning to find he has been transformed into a large beetle of some sort. The thing I find most interesting about this story is the way Gregor seems to be in a state of denial about what this will mean for him. For the longest time, he’s thinking he’ll just get up and go to work anyway. Another thing that struck me was the reaction of his family to his “condition” and the way it resembled family having to care for someone close to them that had a serious infirmity (Alzheimers, Paralysis, Missing Limbs, etc.), starting out with the best intentions and even cheerfulness, but getting dragged down by the burden and even coming to resent the person. Very sad. This ebook edition is translated by Susan Bernofsky, includes a table of contents and biography of the author, and also includes a few illustrations (though they are nothing special). Nice cheap reading copy, and I found the translation very readable.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A beautiful classic By Chris I bought this just so I can finally say, "I've read Kafka's Metamorphosis". This isn't a tale for everyone, however, it is an intriguing depiction of the absurdity of life. Kafka's prose is marvelous. If you are looking for an out of the ordinary experience and you have 99 cents to spare, I highly recommend this novella.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. a classic By Irma Gurman This novella should be on everyone's reading list. Kafka has a style that appears straightforward but is filled with surrealism and symbolism and discomforting ideas. The book, to be fully appreciated, requires additional reading and discussion.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Entertaing and Relatable Read By clear_tranquil I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for a honest review. This is a short story containing a snapshot of Monty's night on the town and how they are desperately trying to figure out their place in the scheme of things. Monty identifies as someone who doesn't necessarily fit into the gender binary and they are perfectly fine with that. What Monty is searching for however, are genuine connections with others. I really enjoyed the stream of consciousness writing style and the story was very relatable

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. "Monty" gets a pass for effort, but fails in everything else By Rod Raglin I want to thank Marcelle Liemant for his hard work and commitment to this worthwhile endeavor.Monty, Nadia and Art are heading out on the town, but first they watch a house burn down. Then they’re off,"The streets rush past as we leap through the yellow lights. We run too fast, we laugh too loudly. We are too young and too old and too much. This night is open for the taking and we are rushing for it."Monty apparently is emotionally damaged. Just what has happened isn’t clear. He wants to forget, to not inhabit his “self”, be filled with the presence of other people and events. They crash a party, they drink whiskey, Monty dances wildly by himself to very loud music and becomes so caught up in it he does a handstand.Another friend, Daria arrives at the party but they quickly have to leave. The four of them run through the streets (again). Nadia encourages Monty to go with Daria. She thinks Daria will help him recover from whatever is tormenting him.The reader eventually learns what has traumatized Monty and pushed him to the brink is nothing more than being dumped by his previous girlfriend, Cecilia. As the wild night progresses “the thread” eventually takes him back to Cecilia’s where he attempts to purge the past that’s plaguing him by setting fire to where she lives..Author Marcelle Liemant should be commended for his attempt at a progressive style of writing. His oblique dialogue, his somewhat unique phrasing and word pairings are interesting when they work, but most often they don’t. The vague references and ambiguity of the characters and their motivations quickly becomes frustrating.More often than not conversations between characters are little more than existential gobbledygook. After a while this fifties-era hipster jive talk style became annoyingly pretentious as well as unnatural. While Liemant may well have thought he was imbuing hidden meaning in the obscure imaginings and dialogue of his characters, to this reader it was just the opposite. What was likely meant to astound, instead confusedThere’s a book by author and teacher Les Edgerton, called "Finding your voice – how to put personality in your writing". In it Edgerton argues if you were allowed to just write “naturally”, not like how you were "told" to write and not like how you think a “writer”should write" (which he calls writing “writer-ly”), you’d have your original voice. In "Monty", I get the impression the author is trying to copy the style of a writer he admires and it’s coming off sounding “writer-ly”. Copying someone else’s style usually tends to sound unnatural because, well, it is unnatural, not only for the obvious reason, but also because you’re likely not of his time, his place, and most certainly not of his presence of mind.I believe if you have a good story the voice to tell it with will come to you. Sort of like the literary version of W. P. Kinsella’s famous line in "Field of Dreams".If you take away Monty’s angst, there’s no depth in his character whatsoever and neither is there in any of the other characters. By their actions and emotional responses I had the impression I was reading about adolescents, though their histories suggest they’re young adults. The plot is superficial and only once very briefly when Monty’s gender was questioned did I think there might be something more to it then post relationship antipathy and remorse. There wasn’t.I liked “Monty”, but only for what it attempted, not what it achieved.I downloaded this book from StoryCartel free in exchange for an honest review and as part of my ongoing commitment to review the work of self-published authors.

2 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Evocative and interesting By Kadlady I received a copy of Monty from the author Marcelle Liemont. It is an interesting story told in the first person of someone who is genderfluid and seems to be affected by depersonalization disorder. Monty returns to Melbourne after some time away in the desert. The reader eventually learns the reason for Monty’s departure, as it continues to cause problems in their life, to the point they decide to burn down their former home. Monty’s most responsible friend Nadia stops them in time to prevent arson and takes them to her place. There Monty seems to realize they need to follow a thread that reconnects them to something. This is an unconventional story about an unconventional person, but fascinating nonetheless.

The Yosemite by John Muir. John Muir (1838–1914) was a Scottish-born American naturalist, author, and early advocate of preservation of wilderness in the United States. John Muir was the first modern preservationist and founder of the Sierra Club. He helped save the Yosemite Valley and wilderness areas in the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Muir wrote essays and books whose relevance makes them still popular. Muir felt that the livestock in the Yosemite area was destroying the land and helped petition congress to make the area a national park. In Muir's writings the reader glimpses the pristine beauty of the high country. In his later life, Muir devoted most of his time to the preservation of the Western forests. He petitioned the U.S. Congress for the National Park bill that was passed in 1890, establishing Yosemite and Sequoia National Parks. The spiritual quality and enthusiasm toward nature inspired readers, including presidents and congressmen, to take action to help preserve large nature areas.

The Yosemite, by John Muir

From Publishers Weekly Sierra Club founder Muir, pioneering conservationist who a century ago fought to establish Yosemite National Park, wrote timelessly of his travels through this High Sierra wilderness. In a new edition of Muir's classic, Rowell ( Mountain Light ) offers a complementary vision in color photographs of the monumental region. Celebrating the purity of the landscape Muir loved, he unveils bare mountain peaks, snow- and mist-filled realms and the pristine particularity of nature on a smaller scale in green and scarlet dogwood foliage and a snug cache of primroses sprouting among massive rocks. An ideal accompaniment to Muir's verbal tour, the photographs, like the prose, verify that "everybody needs beauty as well as bread, places to play in and pray in, where Nature may heal and cheer and give strength to body and soul alike." Copyright 1989 Reed Business Information, Inc.

Review “Not only is [Muir] the author to whom all men turn when they think of the Sierras and Northern glaciers . . . but he was also . . . a man able to influence contemporary thought and action on the subjects to which he had devoted his life.” —Theodore Roosevelt

From the Inside Flap In the spring of 1869, John Muir was looking for means of support to fund his explorations of California's Central Valley region. A ranch owner offered him a job herding sheep in the Sierra Nevada. As he explored the region, he jotted down his keen observations of the scenic countryside, and he eventually became a guide for some of Yosemite's most famous visitors, including Ralph Waldo Emerson. Muir documented these experiences in The Yosemite, first published in 1912. It is at once a vivid, accurate description of the land and a passionate homage to nature. This Modern Library Paperback Classic is a facsimile of the 1912 edition and includes the original illustrations.

14 of 15 people found the following review helpful. A must read, however... By Donald Dwoske I have not had the pleasure of visiting Yosemite, not yet. Muir wrote this book when he was 73 years old and recollects his experiences over may years in the valley. I found the most interesting sections to be descriptions of personal events - riding an avalanche, passing behind Yosemite Falls, the people he knew during those years. I simply wish more of the book had a similar content, I feel we have only been exposed to the tip of the iceberg, and there is so much more he could have offered. I have several of his other books, yet to read, so perhaps they will expand on his personal adventures. There are lengthy sections on the landscape, flowers, trees and other physical characteristics of the valley. It is these latter sections that drop me to a four star rating. I have a version without any pictures, and I believe that photographs would have done many sections of this book more justice than words. Some information on the trees may be unique and interesting, but I found myself skimming over several sections due to a lingering over latin names and taxonomy. This book should simply not be missed by those with a love for the outdoors, but keep in mind there may be some sections lacking the personal touch I was expecting for the whole book.

Should be required reading for all Yosemite Tourists By topchef To fully experience the magic that is The Yosemite they should give this out in the park. Understanding the history of what you see will bring the park to life in an entirely new way.I highly recommend reading this, and then joining the Sierra Club.

Bridled by God, Muir shows that his effort to discover was to be matched only by his drive to preserve Yosemite's existence forever. Muir's determination lead him on walks of over a thousand miles...... most of the time without uttering a word to anyone unless it was absolutely necessary. Truly a soul experienced only once in a millennium. Great read. Very inspiring!!

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Probing psychological thriller By Michael Lindgren The prolific and talented J. Boyett has done it again -- this time producing a slim novella that quite packs a punch in its multifaceted dissection of violence, sex, intimacy, money, and power. Boyett's fiction, drama, and films have often pivoted on the hinge between obsession and violence, and "Stewart and Jean" is no different. The book is redolent of, as one character perceives it, "the surreal irreality of reality itself, the privileged sphere of reality." Another installment in what is turning out to be a fascinating multi-media career.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. I don't even know whose side I'm on anymore By Andrew Bellware You do not know where this book is going. There is both a dread and a kind of brilliance in the narrative which is somehow both completely grounded in its characters and yet blasts forward in plot. Honestly I have no idea how it happens but there are a thousand little moments in this book which are so tangible that I feel like I actually remembered them happening to me, while the plot is a non-stop party of interesting and veiled motivations.

Trail to Her Heart, by Alysia S Knight

About the Author I grew up in a small town in Wyoming loving the outdoors, sports, art, and reading Hardy Boys books. After reading them all at least a half dozen times, I started writing my own stories. Thirty years ago I married a wonderful, honorable man. I’m mother of five children and grandmother of six boys. I love traveling. Through my husband’s work and vacations, I have visited much of the United States, all over Eastern Europe, Canada, Mexico, China, Thailand, Cambodia and Australia, giving me many intriguing locations and experiences for my stories. I am a storyteller. I write the classic hero story because I think there’s a need for more heroes, love, and adventure in our lives. I’m not out to change the world with my writing; I’m just hoping to make your day a little better. Hope you enjoy. Alysia S. Knight

I took the photo of a grey angelfish against the purple coral in the Bahamas aboard the Aqua Cat. That's when I got the idea for an ABC  book with A is for Angelfish. For over ten years I have dove in the Florida Keys, the Caribbean, off the coasts of Mexico, Central America   and South America, as well as in the cold waters of Canada and Alaska to get all the pictures for this book.  The special feature of my book is that I give you a hint as to what the creature will be before you turn the page. For example, for the letter "F" there is a photo of a frog; when the page is turned, you see a photo of a frog fish.  See if you can guess all the fish from the hints. Enjoy!

. . . My dear child, the bromide of sodium (if that's what you call it) proved perfectly useless. I don't mean that it did me no good, but that I never had occasion to take the bottle out of my bag. It might have done wonders for me if I had needed it; but I didn't, simply because I have been a wonder myself. Will you believe that I have spent the whole voyage on deck, in the most animated conversation and exercise? Twelve times round the deck make a mile, I believe; and by this measurement I have been walking twenty miles a day. And down to every meal, if you please, where I have displayed the appetite of a fish-wife. Of course the weather has been lovely; so there's no great merit. The wicked old Atlantic has been as blue as the sapphire in my only ring (a rather good one), and as smooth as the slippery floor of Madame Galopin's dining-room. We have been for the last three hours in sight of land, and we are soon to enter the Bay of New York, which is said to be exquisitely beautiful. But of course you recall it, though they say that everything changes so fast over here. I find I don't remember anything, for my recollections of our voyage to Europe, so many years ago, are exceedingly dim; I only have a painful impression that mamma shut me up for an hour every day in the state-room, and made me learn by heart some religious poem. I was only five years old, and I believe that as a child I was extremely timid; on the other hand, mamma, as you know, was dreadfully severe.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. An Adorable Romance By Lanise Brown Honestly, I thought this book was going to be a total bore. However, I was delightfully mistaken. What's the old adage? Don't judge a book by its cover. Well, that's one of the themes of The Point of View.Written by Elinor Glyn and published in 1913, The Point of View is entertaining even though the lovemaking in the book is considered mild by today's standards. Actually, I'm pretty sure that making love back in the early 1900's meant to court or woo someone. So, yeah, there's no sex in these pages, folks. The story opens in the Grand Hotel in Rome with a young woman named Stella. While Stella's at dinner with her aunt and uncle and they're discussing matters that, well, aren't particularly interesting, a peculiar man named Sasha Roumovski enters the room. Suddenly, everyone's eyes are on him and it's not because Sasha is attractive. It's quite the opposite. The story's premise is that Stella's hedged in by her domineering aunt, uncle, their maid, and her soon to be fiance, a priest by the name of Rev. Eustace Medlicott. Stella can't stand her betrothed and during her stay at the hotel, she's entranced by Sasha Roumovski, a man unlike anyone she's ever seen before. Her relatives call him ugly and distasteful. But Stella sees differently. Through her various meetings with Sasha, she changes her point of view about life and love.Stella is so naive and innocent that I couldn't help but laugh. Her rebellious streak is one reason I enjoyed this book. Stella eventually takes control of her life and refuses to be shoved around by others any longer. With the help of Sasha, she unleashes a side of herself that she never knew existed. There are a few down sides to the book, however. The reoccurring use of exclamations points throughout the book got on my nerves! Also, Gyln had a few instances of narrator intrusion at the start of the story that she seemed to avoid through the rest of the book, thankfully. Numerous adverbs on the dialogue tags bugged me constantly as well, but that's just my personal preference. In the end, I laughed and loved the last line of dialogue in the book. This story is too adorable. I wouldn't let its imperfections scare you away. If you want a great message and the possibility of taking a closer look at your own life, you'll probably enjoy the Point of View.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. interesting but drawn out at times By Silber This is a book that discusses how your surroundings influence your relationships. I wouldn't say this is Glyn's best work or worst work. It had some good lines in it though and a nice ending.

I've followed his work on social media and was delighted to learn that there was a book in the works on fall color in California. As a fellow photographer, I first appreciate the size of the book which easily fits into my photo backpack. It is full of specific advice about places to find fall color but stays true to Mr. Mitchell's philosophy that photography is about finding your own unique statement or angle when you find yourself out there looking for compositions. The book is a great addition to any photographer's library for the tips and tricks it offers. And when the fall color fades and disappears, Mr. Mitchell's great photography of the fall color will be right there in your library to enjoy while you wait for the fall color season once again.

G Dan Mitchell's book provided excellent recommendations on how and where to find and photograph magnificent fall color. Read the book and mapped out the areas we wanted to explore. Can't wait to edit my numerous photos. I've already shared a few images and am receiving great reviews from friends. This book is a must have if you are planning a trip to the Sierra's in search of the best fall color. And, if you can't get to the Sierra's, enjoy the book for it's spectacular photos.

Wolf Enjoyable read. He describes different musicians and their contributions to songs that he really liked. Not all were solos but parts he thought were important to the song. He also had several interviews with the specific musician. I especially like the one with Rick Vito a guitarist who has played with a number of bands and artists (John Mayall, Bonnie Raitt, Fleetwood Mac).

Disentangling the facts from the hype, this 'Domesday book' of the British and Irish countryside offers a definitive and up-to-date survey of the state of our wildlife today. Norman Maclean, editor of the bestselling Silent Summer, examines the latest findings of Britain and Ireland's top wildlife experts and interprets them for a wider audience. Each chapter provides reliable estimates of animal populations, showing which species are thriving and which are in decline. The book also considers the effects of climate change on our wildlife and how human population growth is influencing its development. Beautifully illustrated with colour plates and wood engravings throughout, this accessible and timely study reveals just how rapidly our countryside and its wildlife are changing, why we should be concerned, and what we can do about it.

Review "I hope that you will read, consider, mull and mould all [the book's] ideas in your minds and then feel empowered and motivated to help move wildlife conservation in the UK into a new era ... before it is too late." Chris Packham, naturalist, wildlife photographer and TV presenter, from the Foreword"Providing an audit of the British Isles' wildlife, the author explains both the status and reasons for species' declines and increases clearly and authoritatively." Derek Niemann, BBC Wildlife Magazine"In this important book about an assumed once-pleasant land, biologist Norman Maclean runs his expert eye over the state of Britain's nature." Times Higher Education"... illuminating ... very readable... should be on the shelves of anyone who cares about wildlife, especially policymakers who hold its future in their hands." Brett Westwood, BBC Countryfile Magazine"A Less Green and Pleasant Land covers an impressively broad sweep of topics, not only documenting the biological wealth of Britain and Ireland, but also the full range of what human actions past, present and future could mean for this heritage ... Rich with personal experiences and anecdotes, the core of the book is a plea to everyone who cares about the world they live in to take note and take action." Mark Wilson, BTO News"Norman Maclean was editor of the mammoth, highly successful Silent Summer and this book aims to present the contents of Silent Summer in a more concise and accessible format. And it does just that, enabling a much wider audience to be reached ... Maclean sets the scene well in each chapter, presenting the context to support his points and predictions. The reader is presented with digestible nuggets of information about many different issues ... Readers can learn a terrific amount from this book, as case studies and summaries of a multitude of issues are presented. And, perhaps most importantly, they may be inspired to help make a difference ... This book deserves a place on the shelves of all of those who really care about the countryside and are concerned for its future. But equally, and perhaps more importantly, on the shelves of those who want to learn more about our countryside and how it works." Ajay Tegala, British Birds

About the Author Norman Maclean is Emeritus Professor of Biology at the University of Southampton and a lifelong wildlife enthusiast. He has visited and studied wildlife in more than 50 countries around the world and has given numerous radio and TV interviews on the subject. He is the editor of Silent Summer (Cambridge University Press, 2010).

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Eloquent prose; profound scholarship By John B. Rogers This book is a compendium of the status of wildlife in Britain and Ireland. So, why would an American read it? Easy to answer for me: it is perhaps the best book I've read that connects the threads of nature and man's affect on it. Norman Maclean writes clean, eloquent prose that would be a pleasure to read on any subject, and this book is just plain fascinating.

While in previous works Dr. Junichi Saga has summoned up the voices of his elderly patients to bring back to life a now vanished, "pre-globalized" Japan, here the internationally acclaimed author turns his attention both closer to home, to his own father, Susumu, and further afield, to a family drama that spans 3000 miles, from a rustic hamlet on the shores of Lake Kasumigaura (Japan's second largest) to Irkutsk, on the shores of Lake Baikal in Siberia. The appearance of a long-lost photograph, helps get father and son talking, and 77-year old Susumu's memories flowing - scenes of early 20th century Japanese village life, the once thriving lake-port town of Tsuchiura, cosmopolitan Harbin in Manchuria, the border town of Manzhouli, Irkutsk in the dead of a Siberian winter during the Russian Civil War (1919-1922), and the long train rides between. Susumu recalls what had happened 70 years earlier so vividly and in such detail that his son can hardly believe what he hears. However, visits to the National Archives and some rigorous (pre-Internet Age) research, turn up material that confirms much of what the old man says - and provides a much fuller picture of what was going on in the world that Susumu had lived in - but could hardly make sense of: at the age of eight.... a complex world filled with Radicals (Bolsheviks), anti-Radicals ("Whites"), Chinese warlords, Czechoslovak legionaries, freed Austrian and German POWs, Japanese soldiers and settlers, drifters, bandits and spies. "Susumu's Saga" is a story of memory, family, friendship, the clash of great historical forces - and survival, told in a unique way, with a distinctive "Japanese" sensibility. Many of its scenes, whether of the rapturous crowds cheering the arrival of Japanese troops in Harbin, or two kids tasting some jam on the sly in a neighbor's basement, are likely to stick in your mind for as long as they did in Susumu's - and just as clearly.

But I had a need to research Siberia, and this book has been a pleasant surprise. it's surprisingly good for what it is, a trifle stilted (which actually works as it feels archaic) but very readable and a fascinating, little-known segment of history. I've really liked the way the author alternates between telling the story of his father as a child and his own research into historical events that back up his father's memories.
