Boyett has done it again -- this time producing a slim novella that quite packs a punch in its multifaceted dissection of violence, sex, intimacy, money, and power. Boyett's fiction, drama, and films have often pivoted on the hinge between obsession and violence, and "Stewart and Jean" is no different. The book is redolent of, as one character perceives it, "the surreal irreality of reality itself, the privileged sphere of reality." Another installment in what is turning out to be a fascinating multi-media career.

There is both a dread and a kind of brilliance in the narrative which is somehow both completely grounded in its characters and yet blasts forward in plot. Honestly I have no idea how it happens but there are a thousand little moments in this book which are so tangible that I feel like I actually remembered them happening to me, while the plot is a non-stop party of interesting and veiled motivations.
